Where to see the practice sessions, the best parks for viewing the action, and how to get there by public transit

Held at Genesee Park, Seafair has been a Seattle tradition since 1951, and for many families, it’s one of the “can’t-miss” events of the summer. While adults are impressed with what the high-flying acrobats can do in the sky, kids are flat-out amazed. But the event isn’t just about what’s happening in the sky. It’s a special time when hydroplanes and classic cars are celebrated too. Of course, the show’s biggest stars are the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. They have performed at Seafair for over 40 years! Want to get in on this Top Gun action? Below you’ll find the general scoop on the three-day weekend in addition to information on the best places to watch the Blue Angels at Seafair this year.

Going to the Races

What to Bring
Be sure to lather on the sunscreen and bring lots of water and some extra cash as many of the beaches will have tasty treats to purchase. Your wingmen will enjoy the show best if you gear them up with some ear protection, especially if they can sport some cool earmuffs like the ones the pilots wear.

The Best Way to Get There

However, getting there by car is no picnic, and finding parking will be that much harder. Instead, we suggest you take advantage of buses and link light rail for your transportation needs. In any case, here are your options:

Sound Transit Link Light Rail
Get free round-trip shuttle service from Columbia Center Station from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sound Transit schedules and rates can be found online.

Sound Transit Buses
Check the Sound Transit Trip Planner for the most direct route from your home.

Metro Transit Buses
Metro Bus Route 50 will be operating a standard schedule with stops at Genesee Park & Columbia City Station. This route will operate every 15 minutes from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Seafair Saturday and Sunday. Military members and their families will receive free rides by showing military ID.

ADA Parking
Limited paid ADA event parking will be available on-site on a first-come, first-served basis. A state-issued, accessible placard is required for access.

Seafair

When it comes to summer festivals in Seattle it goes without saying that Seafair is the best. Celebrating its 72nd year, it is one of Seattle’s biggest and most beloved festivals, attended by almost two million residents each summer. Fortunately, they aren’t attending at the same time. Instead, Seafair is a series of events held around the greater Seattle area over a two month span in the summer. The events consists of races, parades and localized festivals all leading up to the big Seafair Weekend Festival (August 5-7) with its amazing air shows and thrilling hydroplane races.

With so much happening, it’s best to scope out your favorites from the official Seafair summer schedule. But some of our top picks for families include the Seafair Pirates’ Landing, happening this weekend (June 25) on Alki; Amazon Seafair Summer Fourth (July 4), making its triumphant return to Gas Works Park after a three-year Covid hiatus; the Alaska Airlines Seafair Torchlight Parade (July 30); and the Seafair Weekend Festival (August 5-7) to round out the summer.

Plus, this year marks the 90th annual Twilight Grand Parade which boasts over 100 floats, marching bands, bagpipers, drill teams, clowns and more.

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to start planning out your days. Whether you have bike riding, playground playing, hiking, popsicle eating or soaking up some rays at the beach on your agenda, your summer-lovin’ little ones will need the appropriate footwear. Make sure you have them covered (literally) by shopping at one of these fantastic shoe stores. Your kiddo is sure to have the coolest kicks on the playground.

Sole Food
It’s no secret we love local shops, so of course Sole Food in University Village made our shoe list. They offer brands and unique styles not found in other stores. Best part?  If you see something online that strikes your fancy, you can have it shipped right to the store and they’ll email you when it arrives.

Hennie McPennie
Another locally owned business on Mercer Island is Hennie McPennie. Not sure what size your wee one is (who can keep track these days with all the growing)? No problem! The nice folks at Hennie McPennie will measure for you using a brannock device which not only measures the length, but also the width and arch. Even if a shoe is uber-cute on, you gotta make sure the fit is precise. In addition to shoes, they also sell toys, so feel free to browse after you’ve scored the perfect pair of shoes.

Hands down one of the best shoe departments in the Seattle area is at the Bellevue Square Nordstrom. Not only do they carry every style and brand imaginable, but the employees are great with kids, even those extra squirmy ones who have no interest in shoe shopping! And free balloons and interactive drawing boards (to keep kiddos busy during the shoe buying process) makes the trip across the bridge totally worth it.

Another awesome option is shopping local at one of the fab consignment stores Seattle and the Eastside have to offer. You won’t have to drop a wad of cash to get some stylish summer shoes, which means you won’t feel bad when your tots outgrow them in what feels like a couple weeks’ time.

Where do you like to summer shoe shop for your kids? Let us know in the Comments below.

Like any specialized group, parents have a lingo all their own. When parents talk about a “blow out” they don’t mean an epic party, or even a real big sale (wink, wink). And Seattle parents are no exception. We have our own language, specific to our favorite haunts and hangouts in the Emerald City. So whether you’re new to parenting, new to Seattle or new to both, this dictionary will help you parent like a pro in “R Town.”
