This list has something for everyone from toddlers to big kids, and the best part is none of them will leave littles with nightmares. If you have older kids who might be ready for more chills, check out our list of scary movies for kids. If you make a night out of it, consider making a Halloween-themed dinner too!

Barney Halloween Party

Everyone's favorite plum-colored T-Rex recruits his pals B.J. and Baby Bop for a night of tricks and treats. Released in 1949, this two-story classic remains a sight to behold nearly a century later, its vibrant animation both impressive and nostalgic. Now, this part is an adaptation of Sleepy Hollow, but rest assured it's about as spine-tingling as a tickling feather.

Casper Meets Wendy

Hilary Duff makes her video debut with a silly spook-fest that costars the world's friendliest ghost. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein

The comedy duo extraordinaire put their slapstick brilliance into action with a story that sees the Wolf Man warning the bumbling pair that Dr. Frankenstein wants their brains for his creation. Older kids, tweens, parents, and everyone will delight in this horror-screwball classic Halloween movie.

Hotel Transylvania

Not only a wonderful gateway film for kids into the family-friendly horror movie genre, Hotel Transylvania is a first-class father-daughter comedy that tugs at all the right strings. About a Count who runs a resort for monsters only, the film is a mash-up of signature Adam Sandler comedy and wonderful animated misadventures that will keep the kids howling.

Girl vs. Monster

For some, learning how their parents lived through the '60s is the most shocking revelation they'll hear. For Skylar Lewis, it's learning that her parents are monster hunters. Ghosts in the Graveyard Dessert Shooters. Don't worry, these alcohol-free treats from Sugarspun Run are for everyone! Think OREO dirt cup with a marshmallow ghost that is fun and easy to make.

Frightfully Easy Halloween Cupcake Treats

Easy to make RIP cupcakes with chocolate wafers, pumpkin shaped candy corn, vanilla wafers and chocolate frosting.

Ghoulish Graveyard. What you'll need: crumbled chocolate wafers, pumpkin-shaped candy corn, vanilla wafers, and chocolate frosting. What to do: After covering the chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting, crush chocolate wafers and sprinkle them over the frosting as "dirt." Set a pumpkin-shaped candy corn on top and write "RIP" on the vanilla wafer before planting it in the "graveyard."

Wicked Witch. What you'll need: green icing, one straw cut in half, and gum drops. What to do: Frost your cupcake in plenty of bright green frosting. Snip your straw in half, and slice a red gum drop down the center, so you have two identical halves (and a pair of ruby slippers). Stick one to each end of the straws and lay the "legs" on your serving platter. Now lay your cupcake house upside down on top of the legs. We can almost hear Dorothy trotting away in glee. 

Not-So-Scary Mummy. What you'll need: Mini M&Ms and white frosting. What to do: Using a piping bag (either store-bought or DIY), place lines across your cupcake to form your mummy's bandages and then two affix candy eyes.

Caught in a Spiderweb. What you'll need: White frosting and black gel icing. What to do: After frosting the cupcake in white, use your gel icing to make three concentric circles on top. Take a toothpick and, starting in the center, drag the toothpick through the icing to the edge (imagine slicing a pizza) to create the spooky spiderweb effect.

Slightly older trick-or-treaters can enjoy the steeper streets of the neighborhood close to Forest Park along the Wildwood Trail. Park near NW Thurman Ave. and 28th Ave. and walk over the bridge into the neighborhood. In Southwest Portland, the Hillsdale neighborhood is a good one to walk around. Park near Rieke Elementary or Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School and enjoy a short, but spirited, walk between Vermont and Chestnut streets.

Sellwood Community House
The Sellwood Community House knows how to throw a fall festival. Start the day off by joining the Monster March parade and stay afterwards for their carnival. Enjoy outdoor games, music, food, a photo booth, face painting, candy, and other Halloween delights. Wear your costumes, and be sure to register in advance for tickets. The Spooktacular Carnival is recommended for children ages 5-12 years old, and has a fee of $15 per child.

Alberta Street is planning on holding their annual Trick-or-Treat Alberta Street event but details are yet to come. Traditionally held from early afternoon until sunset, it’s designed for younger children and families, with businesses handing out candy to costumed kids.

Halloween Themed 5k Beer Run at Level Beer
Parents will appreciate this event that begins and ends at Level Beer. Costumes are strongly encouraged at this annual Halloween event where participants can run, walk, or jog the untimed course. Dogs and strollers are welcome, and adults can enjoy a free craft beer and will receive a collector’s pint glass at the finish line. Plus, the entire fam has access to event activities including games, goodies, and a costume contest. Registration is limited, so sign up ASAP.

It’s spooky season at CMA and they're celebrating with fang-tastic hands-on fun in Jane’s Innovation Station, and at the Science Bar, Art Studio, and CMA Stage. On-stage programs include a special storytime, Halloween dance parties, and spooky science, while drop-in activities will include vanishing ghosts, haunted houses, pumpkin bowling, skeleton puzzles, and more, depending on when you visit. 

Good to Know: Beyond these daily activities, families can bring the kids to the annual trick-or-treat event on Oct. 29 for some extra special fun.

Pumpkins in the Park
One of our favorite Boston Halloween events, families can enjoy Halloween-themed games and activities, a costume parade, spooky music by Nate the DJ, and more. Then hit the pumpkin-lit Animal Nocturnal Trail, a short walk through the woods dotted with fun facts about the nocturnal animals found at Bird Park. Along the trail, four “nocturnal animals” hand out candy to tick-or-treaters, so remember to wear your costume and bring a trick-or-treat bag and flashlight. Oct. 22, 2022. Event details.

Zoo Howl
Animals and Halloween adventures await families at Franklin Park Zoo's Zoo Howl, where kids are invited to trick-or-treat among the animals. Expect mystery animal encounters, costume contests and education stations where kids can meet with Zoo educators to learn about creepy crawly critters. Hillside Halloween

It’s almost Halloween! The perfect time to bring the kids to ICA to get inspired and enjoy free admission for families.
