New York City has enough hot spots to keep you busy for weeks—now there’s one more destination to add to the list for your family trip. The LEGO Group has launched a ‘retailtainment’ NYC store and at 7,175 square feet and two stories, you might want to make an afternoon of it!

The whole family will love the immersive world inside the new store, which blends digital and physical experiences. Head to the Brick Lab where you can build with physical sets and enter a virtual world that brings the walls, floors and ceilings to life with light, sound and music. Scan your build and watch it come to life!

Make sure to stop by the Tree of Discovery for a fantastic photo opp. It’s made of over 880,000 LEGO bricks and took 1,900 hours to construct. The builders want it to symbolize LEGO Group’s commitment to positively impacting the planet. Look closely at the rainbow trunk for hidden details like mini scenes, kaleidoscopes and picture viewers!

Ready for more? Visit the Personalization Studio for fun, unique builds, the Mosaic Maker to create your own personalized mosaic LEGO portrait, or the LEGO Minifigure Factory to create an awesome souvenir for you or a family member. You’ll also find larger-than-life 3D LEGO models throughout the store, including Thor, Spiderman, the Statue of Liberty and Ghostbusters characters.

The new store officially opened on Friday, June 25 at 636 Fifth Avenue in New York City. You can book your in-store experiences now to make your trip extra memorable. And if you can’t make it to the Big Apple, the LEGO Group plans to introduce the immersive concept at more than 100 stores around the world during the next year.

Amazon is going into the grocery store business—and we aren’t talking about Whole Foods. Last spring reports surfaced citing the soon-to-be opening of Amazon grocers. Now, according to CNET, the first of the brick and mortar retailers is about to open—in California!

Reportedly the retailer confirmed, to CNET, the 2020 launch of an Amazon grocery store in Woodland Hills, California. Even though Amazon is already hiring for the Los Angeles area store, the company hasn’t said if it will continue the expansion with more non-Whole Foods markets.

An Amazon spokesperson told CNET, “When it comes to grocery shopping, we know customers love choice, and this new store offers another grocery option that’s distinct from Whole Foods Market, which continues to grow and remain the leader in quality natural and organic food.”

While Amazon’s existing grocery retailers, the cashier-less Amazon Go stores, don’t expect to see a checkout-free model here. Instead, the yet-to-be-named store will have the same type of cashier-staffed checkouts you’re used to.

When it comes to Target, it doesn’t take much to get moms excited. When we aren’t dreaming of meandering the aisles alone with our Starbucks, we’re making some major drive-up orders on our mobile devices. As if our shopping experience couldn’t get any better, Target’s new store design aims to make your next trip to the retailer even better. By taking each store’s neighborhood and needs into consideration, each and every remodel is unique.

Here’s what we love about the Target’s new look.

Boutique-Style Beauty

As busy parents, we don't always have the time, budget or patience to take our kids to the mall and shop high-end beauty counters or stores. Target's redesigned beauty aisles seek to remedy that craving and at a much better price point. Continue to shop your fave drug store and signature Target brands, but in a boutique-feel setup.

Head-To-Toe Outfit Displays & More Mannequins

Stuck trying to find the perfect outfit for a special occasion? Target is seeking to make your clothes shopping experience even better by offering more style suggestions for men, women and kids. Outfit pieces found on mannequins are directly adjacent to the display so you can get the look you see in a cinch

Modern & Open Displays

No more trying to bypass other shoppers in dark, tight aisles! Target's newer, inviting displays are brightly lit and contain smaller subsections of products so you don't have to stand looking at 12 shelves of products, trying to find that one bottle of shampoo.

Reimagined Spaces for Tons of Departments

Target has abandoned traditional departments they've held fast to over the years, for center aisle popouts and corner niches. New LED lighting open shelving is making huge changes in kitchen, home, baby and toys that are just as enticing as they are functional.

Whether you love your kindle, your nook or just skimming stories on your smartphone, there’s nothing like a good old fashioned book. And while many bookstores have shuttered in the last several years, there’s one that’s going strong, and even expanding. And better yet, it’s just for kids. Read on for details on the new uptown location of Books of Wonder. You and your littles will be headed there faster than you can download an e-book.

photo: Kim Sunshine

First, a little history…
The downtown location has been open since 1980. It has since moved and expanded from its original location, and still has ties to “The Wizard of Oz” books, since reissuing L. Frank Baum’s classics when it began a publishing division years ago. Peter Glassman, the owner, comments on the importance of these books, “Since The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the first true American fairy tale, the book and its many sequels have always had a special place hear at Books of Wonder. We not only carry all of the original 14 Baum titles, but also most of the titles by Baum’s authorized successors as well as many modern writers take on this fantastic world.”

Many of these books can be found at the new uptown location, as well as all of the classics and modern titles your kids love.

Who Knew Going Up(town), Means Going Down (in demographics)…

Well, owner Peter Glassman did. “I’ve always felt that the Upper West Side is the most family friendly neighborhood in the city and given the large number of kids, parents, and schools up here, I thought it was an ideal place for a second Books of Wonder store.” says Glassman. The booksellers at the uptown location have noticed that their demographic age is younger than their downtown location, because in Chelsea, often their customers are parents who work in the area. With so many families on the Upper Westside, more and more kids and families are loving what they see, from board books, to “first stories” (picture books with more words than board books but not as many as traditional picture books) to loads and loads of easy readers, non-fiction books, and chapter books for the older set.

“We love recommending books directly to the kids, because we can immediately see their reaction, and know if we’ve peaked their interest, or need to suggest something else,” says Kellie, a Books of Wonder bookseller.

Another way the Uptown location differs from the original is their larger non-fiction section, which includes science, cooking and a diversity section with ever-changing titles. Glassman notes, “The new store is in a state of transition as we learn more and more about what the parents and kids in the neighborhood want.  One section we knew we wanted to increase at 84th Street is our non-fiction and science sections since we’re such close neighbors with the American Museum of Natural History, the Hayden Planetarium, the Rose Center for Earth and Space, New York Historical Society, and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan.”

How Books of Wonder Differs from the Rest
For those of you who say I’ll just stick to my neighborhood bookstore, here are a few things to keep in mind as to why Books of Wonder is a destination, and has been for generations:

First, they separate books by age and not genre. This can help when looking for that perfect birthday gift for the kid whose passions you aren’t so familiar with. They also expose you to a variety of books you might not otherwise see or know about.

Second, Books of Wonder devotes equal amounts of space to classics as they do modern titles. Not sure how to differentiate? For kids, we’re not talking classics like Shakespeare, but titles most parents know like Dr. Seuss and Babar. These “classics” deserve equal love to the popular titles of today like “Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site” and “Little Elliott” that take up most of the shelf space at other bookstores.

Third, as the aforementioned history notes, Books of Wonder publishes all of the Oz stories, and you can get them here.

Lastly, did we mention “first stories”? Many stores don’t have as many of these all-important books when your child has graduated from board books but isn’t quite ready for a long picture book. You want to keep them interested in reading, and there are plenty of these to choose from at Books of Wonder, where they want kids to love reading at all ages.

Story times, Author Signings, and Spending Benefits
Yes, the Uptown location has story times and author signings like the downtown location, and they even have activities that go beyond the standard reading. For example, pop-up book author Kelly Anderson was scheduled to do a demo and craft with kids on how to make a pop-up book, rather than just a reading. Often authors that live in the neighborhood come in to sign copies of their books, and you never know who’ll be in, but check their website for details on planned signings and events.

Since 2010, resale and consignment shop LuLu’s Then & Now has served as a go-to spot for Brownstone Brooklyn parents in search of cute and chic (but affordable) duds for their kids. (Its sister store, Cuts & Toys, helps keep unruly tresses somewhat in check.) A staple on the borough’s 5th Avenue, the store recently closed. But fear not; in fact, celebrate! LuLu’s Then & Now merely relocated to a bigger and better space on nearby 4th Avenue. The new LuLu’s features even more gently-used clothes, tons of new toys, a dressing room and a souped-up drop-in play space. Change is good! Read on to get the scoop on the new and improved store.

More space, more merch

It’s not a new story: a rent hike at the old 5th Avenue shop made LuLu’s owner Brigitte Prat decide to close the location, and she wasn’t even sure if the clothes and toys arm of her LuLu mini empire (which, in addition to Cuts & Toys includes LuLu’s for Baby) would continue. However, when a realtor connection showed her a sprawling space on 4th Avenue (more than double the size of the old store) Prat felt it was the perfect place for LuLu’s 2.0.

The 1,800-square-foot store still sells (and buys) gently-used clothes for kids ages newborn to 12 —  just lots more of it — as well as maternity clothes on consignment. (The store is currently buying for summer; you can read sellers’ rules and guidelines here if you’re interested in getting some cash for your primo castoffs.)  In addition, Lulu’s is now selling new clothes and shoes from brands such as All Good Loving Kids, Native and Salt Water and select overstock from boutique labels (read: Bergdorf goods at discount prices).

Toy Story

The new expanded space also allows for a huge inventory of new toys from eco-friendly and educational companies like Tegu, Plan, Green Toys and Begin Again and urban parent favorites such as micro mini scooters and all things NYC MTA. You’ll also find decor items that will look right at home in any stylish tot’s nursery or bedroom, i.e. plush animal heads from the U.K. ready for wall-mounting.

Stop, Drop and Play!

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the new store is a 350-square-foot play space tricked out with a play house, tent, chalkboard and magnetic walls, Duplo blocks, puzzles, costumes for dress up and much more.

The play space will operate on a drop-in basis daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the rate of $12 per session for one child and $6 for additional children; 10 packs are also available for $105. (Caregivers must remain with children in the play space at all times.) Read the complete list of guidelines for the play space here.
