When you don’t want to hit the beach, these splash pads and water parks in Los Angeles provide the ultimate cool-down for kiddos

Sure, when of the perks of southern California is access to some of the nation’s best beaches to visit with kids, but when things heat up in and around LA, it can feel like a lot to rally the troops—and gather up all the necessities, like the towels and chairs and toys—and hit the beach. Thankfully, there are plenty of other places to cool down around town during a Los Angeles summer. So, when you don’t want to head to the sand (or take shoe-fulls home with you!), here’s our list of the best splash pads—splash parks with built-in water play features—and water playgrounds as well as tricked-out inflatable water parks and pools. Get ready for the most refreshing summer ever thanks to these water-friendly spots around LA.

The Best Splash Pads & Pools in Los Angeles

In Santa Monica, there are three splash pads to choose from: Virginia Avenue Park, Tongva Park, and the Annenberg Beach House. All splash pads are open from the first weekend in May to the end of October.

Tongva Park: Escape the chaos of the nearby Santa Monica Pier for this urban oasis. Inside the park, head to Discovery Hill, which features a children’s play area (with a sloped climbing wall and slides), shaded picnic area, and splash pad. The water area is built on a soft surface making it safe for little ones. The park is open daily 6 a.m. – 11 p.m., but splash pad hours vary due to efforts to reduce water usage during drought.

Online: tongvapark.smgov.net

Virginia Ave. Park: This 9.5-acre park in the heart of Santa Monica is a beauty and a great place to bring a group of friends to spend the day. The park boasts two modern playgrounds, basketball courts, ample parking, a “patio” for picnicking and, of course, the splash pad.

Splashing is paramount here with water shooting from the walls and ground at alternating intervals accompanied by several water “cannons” that will be sure to keep everyone nice and wet. The park is also adjacent to the Pico Branch Library with a Whole Foods across the street (perfect place to pick up some picnic items) and hosts a weekly Farmer’s Market on Saturdays. The splash pad operates from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. but subject to close in the event of drought restrictions.

2200 Virginia Ave.

Annenberg Beach House: This oceanside facility in Santa Monica is open to the public, and here’s where you get the best of everything this summer: A sandy play area plus a fantastic splash pad with lots of tables and chairs, all with a relaxing ocean view without worrying about undertow or riptides. Sounds pretty fantastic, amiright?

If you’re craving a pool experience, you can buy day passes for the historical beach house pool (half off on Mon.) but if you don’t feel like the extra work, just lay low at the pad. They are both currently open daily from 9 a.m.-7 p.m.

Beverly Hills: More stream than splash pad, this adorable grassy area in Beverly Hills has a gentle man-made creek for the littles to splash around in making it a popular hot spot for cooling off. Don’t mistake this place for the Coldwater Canyon Park up Mulholland—this one is right across from the fire station where Beverly Dr. and Coldwater Canyon meet.

The playground portion of this must-see spot offers tons of shade for those hot, sunny days and lots of lovely benches for parents to kick back and relax while their littles romp around. Open daily from sunrise to sunset.

East LA: Located east of DTLA, the City Terrace Park is clean, offers a super spacious splash pad area and tons of shade which is essential when those toasty temps begin to skyrocket. Open May 1 through Sept. 30, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., daily.

Whittier: Cool off at Amelia Mayberry Park, a 14-acre park in Whittier whose splash pads open May 1 through Sept. 30 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., 7 days a week.

DTLA: Grand Park is a downtown oasis but during the summer, the splash park in front of the fountain is a parent’s dream. Various water spouts shoot water into the air while the water is only a couple of inches deep making it fun for everyone from crawlers to big kids. The atmosphere is usually festive with music and food trucks on site—not to mention a Starbucks is right there.

Culver City: Between the Culver Hotel and The Steps in Culver City is a public work of art, called the Lion’s Fountain, a splash pad surrounding a dancing lion statue—a nod to the area’s contribution to . A Cold Stone Creamery is located just a few steps away, so you can cool off inside and out.

Hacienda Heights: This small, local park, called Los Robles Park, is located in the quiet San Gabriel Valley neighborhood of Hacienda Heights. The splash pad is open May 1 through Sept. 30 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., 7 days a week.

Simi Valley: LA can get hot, but places like Simi Valley really sizzle, so it’s not surprising that one of the area’s best splash pads is located there. Affectionately known by locals as “Lemon Park,” this exceptionally well-maintained (read: clean!) spot also offers a playground, sports courts (they have bocce ball!), fitness equipment and 1/2 mile of trails for little hikers. After you’ve sampled all the park’s amenities, take your brood under the giant mushroom sprinkler to cool down. Beating the heat has never been more peaceful. The splash pad will be open until Tues., Sept. 5. The hours of operation are from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., but will be closed for maintenance every day from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

West LA: If your older fish want more out of a cool-down experience than just a few misters, Stoner Park has a pool with a splash pad attached so there’s a little something for everyone. The splash pad has fountains, sprays and water walls that line the front edge of the gradual entry pool providing non-stop fun. Once the more adventurous of the bunch have acclimated to the cooler water temperatures (ideal for a hot day), they can shift to the pool (or the twisty water slide for ages 7 & up), which is 4 1/2 feet deep and allows for safe swimming.

Insider Tip: Because of the pool, this splash pad has an admission fee of $4 for adults and $1 for kids. There’s a 1-1 ratio of adults to kids in the pool for kids under 7 and everyone must have a bathing suit to enter. Pool and water slide hours vary, so be sure to check the daily operations website for updates before you go.

Glendale: Pacific Park Community Center is what summer memories are made of! Take the littles to Pacific Park’s water play area for splash-pad shenanigans that will keep the whole family cool as a cucumber. Once everyone is sufficiently water-logged, dry off and head over to the Pacific Park library for some air-conditioned book browsing. Pacific Pool, the wading pools, and the splash pads are all open, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Lawndale: Alondra Community Regional Park has 53 acres, and is located halfway between Hawthorne and Torrance in Lawndale, this park features a duck pond, scooter paths, a playground, the occasional visit from an ice cream man, and a splash pad that is full of entertainment for the entire family. If you have a big kid in tow, they may even enjoy the skate park or the full-size swimming pool that opens Jun. 15-Aug. 22). But if parents are simply looking for easy (and free!) enjoyment, stick to the splash pad—it’s hours of soaking wet fun and is open through Sept. 30, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., 7 days a week.

From Maypole ceremonies and sheep shearing to outdoor carnivals and music fests, you’ll want to clear your calendars for these events

As flowers are starting to poke out of the newly thawed ground, so do a bunch of spring festivals. On this year’s list, we’ve got a baker’s dozen of favorite festivals, some of which have not been in-person since before the pandemic. From tulips to cherry blossoms and sheep to shenanigans, there is something on our list that will appeal to not only the little guys but moms and dads too. Most of these events are free to boot!

Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival

Seattle Center

The Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival is Seattle Center's oldest in the Festál series. The festival was inspired by a gift of 1,000 cherry trees sent to the city from Japan's former Prime Minister, Takeo Miki, commemorating America's bicentennial and the lifelong friendship between Japan and Washington State. Since then, the festival has been dedicated to increasing the understanding and friendship between the people of Japan and the Pacific Northwest. It features ikebana, martial arts demonstrations, tea ceremonies, kimono dress-up, children's activities, koto music, taiko drumming, and more.

Baby Animals & Blooms Days

Allison Sutcliffe

Baby animals and blooming tulip fields are the headliners of this festival. But we're sure if you asked your kids, they'd say the farm amenities are what make this event worth the drive for Seattle families. They've got enough to keep your kids playing all day long (no joke) and it all starts with the Kids Courtyard Play Area. If you've got toddlers in tow, this is a great spot to be. But if big kids are in your crew, start in the back field where you'll find the wagon ride, cow train ride, "mega" slide, jump pillow, low ropes course, ziplines, wall mazes, human foosball, trike track, tube slides and a variety of unique and fun-sounding activities like Barnyard Ball Zone, Conk the Crow, Roller Bowler, and Gaga Ball. They'll be tired after a day on this gorgeous farm. When you need to refuel, stop by one of the many food booths to grab a bite.

Warm days are on the way, and there is an easy way to make sure the kids get enough fresh air and sunshine. Classic backyard games take almost no props or planning, many of them are well suited to siblings, and some even encourage parents to get in on the fun! These games were made for outside play, and they’re a perfect addition to your neighborhood gathering or summer birthday party.

1. Ice Pool Challenge
Chill out with this easy-to-play, simple-to-stage backyard game that kids of (almost) any age can play. To set it up, fill your kiddie pool with water and dump it in a bag of party ice. Yep, it’s that easy. Then divide the Littles into two teams, each with a bucket. Their goal is to fill the bucket with as many of the submerged ice cubes as they can, using only their feet to move those little rascals from one place to the next. Brrr-ing it!

2. Ninja Attack
In this game, ninjas-in-training test their skills by quietly sneaking up on a ninja master. Intrigued? Start by setting up a ninja course (think: paintball course) using oversized moving boxes, play tunnels, and other objects kids can quickly duck behind (or into). This is where the little ninjas will try to hide as the ninja master scans the yard for tiny foes. Then, have the master stand at one end of the yard opposite their attackers. When you say go, the ninja master turns their back on her opponents while they stealthily walk toward them. When you say stop, little ninjas duck behind whatever’s closest so the master ninja won’t spot them. If they do, the little ninja is out. But if you’ve got the skill and can reach the ninja master first, you become the master!

3. Balloon Relay
A perfect game for outside play. Fill up a few water balloons and line up the kids Madeline-style (that’s two straight lines). Hand each line leader a balloon and have them place it securely between their knees. Then it’s time to start the game! Players pass the balloon, knees-to-knees, down the row until it reaches the finish. It doesn’t get easier than that!

4. Bandana Tag
Transform the typical game of tag into a free-for-all (this one works best with older kiddos). The twist? They’re all “it.” To play, hand out bandanas to your crew to tuck in along their waistline, and let the great chase begin! Players tag each other by snagging bandanas, while simultaneously guarding their own until one player is left standing. It’s a wild romp they’ll want to play over and over again.

5. Bucket Toss
You can’t go wrong with carnival games, and the bucket toss is an all-time favorite. Line up the prize-filled buckets in a row. Each kid who power-slings a ball into a bucket is the proud owner of the goodie waiting to be plucked up. Opt for three turns each, otherwise, there could be a lot of standing (or wiggling) happening!

6. Squirt Gun Soccer
You should probably start stockpiling super soakers for this one. Little athletes will have a blast with this no-kick version of soccer that trades feet for squirt guns and traditional soccer balls for a lighter-than-air beach ball. To start this backyard game, break the party group into two teams, and arm each player with a fully loaded squirt gun. They’ll use the stream to move the ball around the field as they try to score (or block) a goal. Set up sports cones at either end of the field so they know where to aim, and then it’s time to play. Go, team!

7. Statue & Tourist
Perfect for when the light is fading (or in a dark room). One player is the “tourist” who is viewing the amazing statue garden. They get a flashlight.  All the other players must stay as still as a statue: they are allowed to move when the light is off, but as soon as the tourist turns the flashlight on they must stay still. When the flashlight is on the statue, the tourist tries to make the statue giggle or wiggle. If they do, they join the tourist’s team and go tour for the next statue.

8. Run Through the Sprinkler
Turn your pool noodle into the best kiddie pool accessory in town, by converting it into an overhead sprinkler. Mommy’s Block Party can walk you through the process. It’s like a trip to the splash pad, without leaving the house. That sounds like the perfect summer pace to us! Check out these other amazing things you can do with a pool noodle (that don't involve a pool).

9. Play with Hula-Hoops
Who says you have to have moves like Jagger to have fun with a hula hoop? Check out Learn Play Imagine's awesome hula hoop games—you'll be amazed at the different and new ways you can play with one of the oldest toys imaginable.

10. Water Balloon Piñata
Bye-bye piñata loaded with sugary sweets and playful trinkets; hello suspended deluge! String up an array of colorful water balloons in the yard (over a tree, from the swing set) to serve as the party piñata. Line up the Littles, bursting with excitement to try this creative alternative, and let each one take a swing in turn, with a plastic bat, or even a wrapping paper tube, in the hopes of hitting the delicate target, and letting loose the wild waterfall. Blindfolded or not, this is one guaranteed way to get wet!

11. Monkey Around.
Building on the “tag, you’re it!” theme, Monkey Tails is a silly variation that gets the whole crew involved in the chase. Simply tuck tails (socks or even dad’s ties make great ones) into the monkeys’ waistbands, then send everyone off, ducking, dodging and running wild, to keep their tails from being nabbed by another player. The last player with a tail wins.

12. Superhero Showdown
Organize a meeting of the superheroes and watch the afternoon fly by. You might be ducking to avoid Batman’s (imaginary) gadgets and Spidey’s web all afternoon but the non-stop giggle-fest will be worth the effort.

13. 21 Questions, or "Who Am I?"
One person comes up with a person or thing; the other person has to ask "Yes" or "No" questions to try to figure out what or who it is. For younger kids, nix the Yes or No and just let any question do.

14. iSpy
This one's another standby that's great for nice afternoons outside. You can play it by "spying" something that is a certain color ("I spy something purple") or by spying something that starts with a specific letter ("I spy something that starts with the letter B"). You can also up the game with binoculars and try to spot things at a certain distance away.

15. Look for Pictures in the Clouds
After all of these fun activities, the last, and best one on your bucket list is to lay back in the grass and hunt for pictures floating by in the clouds. See who can be the first to spot an animal, an imaginary being, a building, a car, and whatever other fun shapes you can think of.

16. Rock, Paper, Scissors
Get your game hands on and "shoot!" Want to know how to be a Rock Paper Scissors star? Watch this fun video from Buzzfeed on "How to Win at Rock Paper Scissors." Or try the Japanese version, called Janken. Start by saying “saisho wa guu.” Then “janken pon” as you pump, before throwing on “pon.” The winning combos are still the same in this timeless, quick backyard game you can play at home or on the go.

17. Simon Says
Simon says to try this backyard game with your kids instead of handing them your phone the next time you're waiting for anything (i.e. at the doctor's office, outside the classroom, etc.). If you didn't grow up on Planet Earth and don't know how to play, here are the rules.

18. Make and Play Giant Pick-Up Sticks
Instead of playing pick-up sticks with the chopstick-sized sticks of our youth, why not spray paint the sticks in your yard and play with those, instead? Bonus: Guess who helps you gather the sticks out of your yard? And they say they’re too young for yard work. You can thank I Heart Naptime for the great idea.

19. Let’s Race!
On your mark, get set, GO! Whether you’re staging a relay race or a full-tilt foot race, all you need for a memorable obstacle course is whatever you’ve got in your garage (think big wheels, basketballs, and jump ropes) and a little creativity. Want to up the ante? Add a stopwatch, and you’ll have them competing against their own PRs all afternoon long. Nothing gets the giggles going more than an obstacle that involves improv dancing!

20. Play Blind Man’s Bluff
This classic game is like thinking-man’s tag. All you need is a blindfold and a few players to start. Put the blindfold on the Seeker; then spin them around a few times while the other players scatter. Now it’s time to seek. Using their keen other senses, the Skeeker tries to tag the scattered players who are rooted in place. Sure, players can duck and dodge their outstretched arms, but they can’t move their feet. It’s a giggle-worthy backyard game everyone can play!

21. Food Truck
From the brilliant mind behind Tinker Lab comes another great way to pretend play outdoors. If you’ve got a big cardboard box, then you’ve got a restaurant, a vehicle, and a store! Yup, it’s a pretend food truck and it’s rolling right into your living room. They’ll be serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert— all in one afternoon.

22. Green Light, Go!
We love Red Light/Green Light because it’s a simple and quick backyard game to play. Plus, it gives parents the option to take it easy as the caller or join in the game (hello daily workout!). Stop and go until they’re tuckered out from all that running.

23. Marco Polo (with a twist)
Modify a classic pool game with a few tweaks, and you’ve got a backyard game that'll tire out your kids. Play a few rounds of Marco Polo outside—all that ducking, dodging and blind searching is more tiring than you’d expect, which makes it a great way to wear out wee ones pre-bedtime.

24. Have a Sponge Ball War
Better than a water balloon fight (sayonara, plastic balloons all over the yard!), DIY sponge balls (find them at It's Overflowing) are reusable, versatile, and a total blast.

25. Give Up the Charade
Have your little monkey stay in character when you play a quick game of animal charades. No prep is necessary for this easy guessing game. Just pick your favorite animal and go for it! With each successful guess, trade places and start again. Ee-i-ee-i-o!

We all want our little Einsteins to tinker and experiment—but we don’t always want them to do it near nice furniture. So how about taking all that drippy genius outside? Whether you want to play with paint-laden pendulums or watch epic (but safe!) explosions, making a mess is half the fun. These easy outdoor science experiments for kids allow you to set up for science in the backyard, but if you’re looking for indoor ideas, check out our ultimate list of science experiments for kids.

Make a Sundial

It’s not often you’ll find a store on the top of a tourist destination list, but by all accounts, the Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid is a must-see in Memphis. It's home to three very unique restaurants, an interactive wetlands educational museum, a bowling alley, an aquarium with a daily fish feeding show, a hotel, and a 28-story freestanding elevator, and glass observation deck.

Take a stroll down Beale Street in the daytime or early evening and enjoy street performers like the Beale Street Flippers, shop at A. Schwab for anything but the kitchen sink (although, you might find one of those, too) or step into Silly O'Sullivans where it's St. Patrick's every day for live music and a kid's menu.

A short walk across the skybridge from downtown will take you to Mud Island. Run around, have a picnic, visit the Mississippi River Museum or catch a show at the amphitheater, all while admiring the perfect view of the city skyline.

Tour
While Elvis may have left the building, Graceland is still quite the sight to see. Take a self-guided tour with the assistance of a provided iPad and headphones.  See the famous Jungle Room, a tuxedo of gold (among numerous costumes worn by The King), his cars, and jets.

Though heavy and a bit somber, the history and lessons to be learned at the National Civil Rights Museum are too important to skip.  However, the museum recognizes the sensitive nature of some of the exhibits and offers a Family Guide to help guide parents with younger children away from some exhibits that might be too upsetting. They also offer ways in which to engage older children in an open dialogue about the challenges we continue to face as a nation.

Eat
From boils to sushi, Saltwater Crab will satisfy your seafood cravings.

Though Moms may be wary of their slogan, “So good y’ull slap yo’ mama”, Commissary BBQ is the place to go for Memphis-style BBQ.  It's world-famous, having served dozens of celebrities.

Nothing washes down BBQ better than snow cones. Head to Jerry's Snow Cones for a refreshing fix.

Locals and visitors alike will swear by Brother Junipers for the best breakfast in town. With a large menu filled with delicious breakfast omelets, burritos, gyros, and seven different potato dishes, everyone is sure to find something that hits the spot.

Stay
One of the most iconic Memphis institutions, The Peabody is both historical and elegant.  Probably known best for its five resident ducks that miraculously march into the lobby fountain twice a day like clockwork, the hotel also boasts the most luxurious accommodations.

Make like an Egyptian and stay in The Pyramid at the Big Cypress Lodge. In addition to all the onsite entertainment like the aquarium and museum, your stay includes a complimentary hotel shuttle to anywhere within a 5-mile radius, internet access, a 24-hour business center, a 24-hour fitness center, complimentary express Sky High ride tickets, and complimentary snack basket.

If you're looking for something a little simpler in a great location with an indoor pool, consider the Hilton Garden Inn. Onsite dining and dog-friendly rooms are available.

Port Aransas & Mustang Island - TX

Courtesy Port Aransas/Mustang Island Tourism Bureau & Chamber of Commerce

Voted as one of Vacation Critic’s 2019 Best Beaches for Families, Port Aransas (known as Port A to locals) has made a full recovery since being battered by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Located on 18 miles of beachfront on Mustang Island, there’s no end to the fun for families. You can go birding at one of six sites along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, take the ferry to San Jose Island, a former ranch that is now an uninhabited wildlife preserve that’s perfect for a day trip, play with the kids on Port A beaches like Mustang Island State Park and Padre Island National Seashore. If you vacation in Port A in July, be sure to catch the Gulf Coast’s oldest fishing tournament the Annual Deep Sea Roundup. As far as food goes, this fishing mecca has 11 different restaurants that’ll cook up what you catch that very day.

From hotels to vacation rentals, lodging abounds. A few best-bet spots are the re-invented Palmilla Beach Resort & Golf Club—not only is there a restaurant and pool on the property, but the resort offers one of the nicest beaches on the island—the Sunflower Beach Resort & Residences, which is nestled among 50 acres of protected dunes along Mustang Island and offers amenities like a beach club, bike rentals and restaurants, and Cinnamon Shore, which offers a ton of family activities like Movie Night at Town Center, S'mores night, surfing lessons and shrimp boils on the beach.

Puerto Morelos, Mexico

Gabby Cullen

Nestled between the world’s second-largest barrier reef and an expansive nature preserve lies the tiny fishing village of Puerto Morelos. Home to just 1,200 year-round residents, you’ll find fresh seafood restaurants along the beach and people browsing through colorful shops, enjoying live music on the weekends and admiring the nearly century-old leaning lighthouse. It's the ideal location for a family trip or parents-only vacay.

What to do: It might be hard to choose between swimming in one of the nearby cenotes, snorkeling on the barrier reef (we loved the Lighthouse Tours two-hour tour), or visiting ancient Mayan Ruins. A highlight for families is Crococun, a local wildlife center filled with crocodiles, parrots, turtles, iguanas, spider monkeys and more. Each tour is guided by a biologist; kids will be able to hold a baby crocodile, feed deer and turtles, plus there’s a picnic/playground area that’s perfect for fueling up after seeing all the animals.

Where to stay: The ideal spot to stay during your visit is Grand Residences Riviera Cancun, a five-star resort that feels more like a home than a hotel. One of the things we loved about the Grand Residences Rivera Cancun is that it’s made up of all suite-style rooms, which means you have choices: You can book anything from a one-to three-bedroom suite that comes equipped with everything from a small kitchenette to a full kitchen/laundry with extra murphy beds in the living room. There’s a mix of oceanfront views and resort views, and all of the suites are pristine, with decor inspired by the local culture.

Ocean City, MD

If you’re looking for ocean waves, the scent of funnel cake and saltwater taffy, all while trying to find the very best tourist t-shirt, let us be your guide. Seeped in classic American culture, Ocean City, Maryland is the perfect spot for a quintessential beach boardwalk experience. Full of family fun (even in the shoulder season), history and sunshine.

What to do: During the summer months (which sees 300,000 people on an average weekend), visitors can enjoy the 26th Street Movies on the Beach series, concerts, surfing contests, family beach Olympics and festivals galore. If you want to skip the crowds, the fall and the holiday season offer plenty of fun too, like the Sunfest—an art festival with music, food and vendors, the Great Pumpkin Race, Halloween Beach Maze, Light-Up Downtown Winter Festival, and, of course, fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

Where to stay: Hyatt Place is a great pick for families. It opened its doors in the fall of 2018; there are 105 rooms (56 of them are oceanfront), an indoor and outdoor pool, a buffet breakfast serving cage-free eggs, all-natural bacon, steel-cut oats, fruit, pastries and other kid-friendly food. In the summer and shoulder seasons, you'll find make-your-own sundaes on Fridays, and in the summer there's face painting, children’s entertainers and Mermaid Mondays.

The Islands of Tahiti

Kate Loweth

If something a little more exotic is on your radar for your next family vacation, Tahiti should be at the top of your list! With low-cost, direct flights on French Bee available from SFO, it’s an easy getaway to another world. You won’t have the crowds of other island destinations and the kids will love learning some Tahitian and French phrases while you are on your tropical family vacation.

What to do: Tahiti is full of gorgeous beaches that are practically deserted, a totally different experience from other island spots like Hawaii. In addition, you can learn about the history and culture of this island community with island tours and food tasting experiences.

Where to stay: If you plan to stay on the island of Tahiti for the duration of your visit, you'll want to head to the Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort to enjoy the black sand of Matavai Bay. Located just a 15-minute drive from downtown Papeete, you'll love the relaxed tranquility that this hotel offers. Rooms include outdoor lanai balconies with water views and there are suites for families who need more room.

If you are up for a bit more adventure, book some time at Le Taha'a Resort and Spa. To get there, fly from Tahiti to the island of Raiatea where the resort will pick you up in a boat to take you to your island paradise. In addition to traditional overwater suites (which can sleep a couple plus one child), Le Taha'a offers massive beach villas to accommodate families. These villas are right on the beach and have a private plunge pool, air conditioning, outdoor shower and tub, free WiFi and a huge bathroom.

If you are looking for a totally relaxed island vibe, definitely put Punta Cana on your beach vacation list. Because Punta Cana is in the Caribbean, the weather is beautiful all year round. If you’re looking to chill in this hotspot during a quieter, less crowded time, consider traveling March-May when the highs average in the low 80s. Hurricane season is June-November, but your chance of getting gorgeous weather is better than average. The warmest months on the island are June-September.

What to do: Ocean Adventures’ 3-hour Caribbean Pirates adventure will have you snorkeling with sharks and interacting with stingrays at Shark Island, exploring coral reefs and following treasure maps. Just don’t get too comfortable—you never know when rival pirates will attack. Included in the price is unlimited beverages, hotel pickup and drop-off, fruits and light snacks. As a bonus, kids come along for free.

Where to stay: The circle is the universal symbol of wholeness and perfection and all-inclusive The Grand Reserve at Paradisus by Melia Hotels in Punta Cana—with its circular design, classy but approachable vibe and an overall aura that magically expels stress—crushes that perfection goal. The Grand Reserve wants you to have a think-free vacation, so the experience is all-inclusive. And, keep in mind, Melia Hotels is hyper-focused on shattering the perception that runs rampant about all-inclusive vacations by offering guests an unparalleled luxurious experience.

Located on the Gulf of Mexico side (just a short ride away from the heart of St. Petersburg), the kids can scoop and splash all day, you can chill in a cabana (bring along that novel! We packed two!) or go paddle boarding and parasailing, all without having to so much as hop in the car. There’s truly something for everyone.

Where to stay: St. Pete Beach has no shortage of beach-front or just-off-the-beach properties, from budget motels to grandiose palaces. Where you stay can make or break a family vaycay, but don’t get overwhelmed: just book a room at the Sirata Beach Resort. Not only is it affordable (rooms start at just $159 a night) it’s right on the beach and extremely family-friendly. They just completed a renovation in January of 2019 and parents will find the rooms spacious and comfy, many with kitchenettes and awesome views of the Gulf of Mexico.

Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

Mimi O'Connor

If you’re in search of a low-key, relaxed-but-elegant retreat for the family (that’s also conveniently located in paradise) Turks & Caicos’ Providenciales is calling.

What to do: One of the main things to do here, is nothing, in the very best way. Relax on the stunning white sand beaches while the kids splash in the breathtaking and mild turquoise waters. When you’re ready for some action, dive in with some snorkeling at the third-largest barrier reef in the world. (We like Caicos Dream Tours for a day trip to a good spot: you’ll love the staff, the kids will love shooting down the slide off the side of the boat.) You can also explore the island’s mangrove forests, gliding by baby turtles, colorful fish, lemon sharks and other friendly sea creatures, and take in myriad tropical birds; we recommend the mom and pop business WaterPlay TCI, who knows what kids like because they have one.

Where to stay: For understated elegance and stunning natural beauty, head to luxury resort The Shore Club, the first resort on pristine Long Bay Beach. The Shore Club is refined, but not at all stuffy, making it a fantastic retreat for families wanting to spend some quality time together. Choose from one of the four pools on the property, where you can graze on fare like sushi and fish tacos and relax in a cabana, as kids splash around and play with inflatables. The beach is a short stroll away, with waters shallow, calm, and perfect for testing out the kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and more.

Nassau, Bahamas

Tadeu Brunelli

If you’re looking to find a happy medium between a sophisticated oceanside retreat and a kid friendly, beachy resort, Nassau's Baha Mar, located on stunning Cable Beach, is the spot. You can all have fun and relax here, with a mix of curated restaurants offering top-notch cuisine (all with kids’ menus), a truly engaging Explorer’s Club for kids, and the Caribbean’s largest casino, which—shocker—has windows with some very nice views. (Have you ever been in a casino with windows? Probably not.)

What to do: Kids love pools, and there are a whopping 11 pools on site. Each has its own vibe, with some that cater to adults for either partying or enjoying a child-free zone, but more than a few are primo spots for playing the day away. Kids (and parents) will love “Dean’s Blue Hole”, where they can leap from two “cliffs” into the pool, and then swim over to The Grotto to get an underwater view of schools of fish, sea turtles, nurse sharks and stingrays through an aquarium-style wall of glass. Steps away is the beach, where guests can enjoy complimentary use of kayaks, snorkeling gear, floating lounges, and water hammocks. For fun on dry land, head to The BEACH Sanctuary (where those sea turtles, nurse sharks, and stingrays live) to observe the daily feedings of the animals at no cost, or book an interactive experience to get up close. And don’t miss the birds: Baha Mar’s The Aviary is the place to meet and feed beautiful tropical feathered friends, and the free, daily Flamingo Parade showcases the resort’s stunning pink flock.

Where to stay: Baha Mar is home to three hotels: The Grand Hyatt, luxury property Rosewood, and the contemporary and comfortable SLS—all of which have access to the resort’s amenities. We stayed at SLS, and loved its combination of chic surroundings, thoughtful design (charging ports next to the bed FTW), and superior yet warm and welcoming service. Stylish residence suites make staying as a family a delight, with a spacious living room, equipped kitchens, a washer/dryer, and dreamy beds.

The Keys, FL

Amber Guetebier

Bump the Florida Keys to the top of your beach list for its sandy beaches, turquoise waters and a rich array of activities, food and culture—all without a passport.

What to do: A sleepier Keys town, Key Largo has plenty of amenities along Hwy 1. Hit Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen for a super kid-friendly environment, great food and your perfect first Florida Keys vaycay photo opp. If you have a few hours to spare, it’s well worth a stop to go swimming or even snorkeling excursion at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Snorkeling tours are about 2.5 hours long, as are the glass-bottom boat tours. You can book everything at the park or in advance online if you want to guarantee your window.

Where to stay: Make Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Key your home base, and venture to nearby Marathon Key and Key West for day trips. There are 5 pools + hot tubs and a salt-water swimming lagoon. The resort has a ton of daily, exciting activities for kids (like diving for jewels with the Pirate Queen Priscilla or swimming with the resident Mermaid, Coral). There’s an entire, well-stocked, craftacular Camp Hawk area that’s just a 30-second dash to a Pirate Ship splash pad (and another pool). There’s also a soccer field, playground and an 18-hole Putt-Putt course.

Lake Michigan, MI

For a change-of-scenery experience, hit Michigan’s beach towns in Harbor Country and further north. These beach communities have tons of secrets to discover, the greatest of which are mild temperatures, freshwater and a nostalgic vibe.

Where to go: In western Michigan, New Buffalo's blueberry picking can't be beaten July, and a trip to the Warren Dunes State Park before it gets too hot to conquer the massive dunes is definitely in order. Just up the road, the Silver Beach Center is a kiddie haven with a hand-painted giant carousel, Michigan's tallest kaleidoscope, and the Curious Kids' Museum, which is colorful and engaging enough to give Chicago museums a run for their money. For a different, tasty type of adventure, go a bit farther afield to Coloma and pick ripe cherries and peaches at Fruit Acres Farm Market.

Where to stay: In Holland, the Lake Ranch Resort is the only spot where you can stay on the water. It’s a 10-minute drive from downtown Holland and rooms range from two people up to 10. You can also check out the Holiday Inn and Conference Center that has cots and cribs, a game room, and babysitting services available... not to mention a Michigan-shaped heated pool.

Clearwater Beach, FL

Kristina Moy

Located on the west central coast of Florida, Clearwater Beach offers miles of white sugar sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters and a laid-back resort town vibe. The coastal gem, which has been named number one beach in America many times over, is reminiscent of a tropical island destination because of its subtropical climate, warm gentle waters and year-round sun.

What to do: Visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and meet rescued dolphins, Winter and Hope, and Herald the sea turtle (aka Mavis) from the Dolphin Tale movies and learn about the aquarium's dedication to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing sick and injured marine animals back into the wild, public education, conservation and research. Take a sunset cruise and learn interesting facts about the natural wonders of the Gulf Coast and hit the Dolphin Trail. In the midst of Clearwater Beach is where you find Pier 60, an iconic 1,080-foot fishing pier and recreational park. If you’ve got a crew of little anglers, stop into the pier bait house and pick up everything you’ll need to reel in mangrove snapper, Spanish mackerel, flounder or other fish (depending on the time of year). The pier’s nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 festival offers a carnival-like atmosphere with street performers, artisans, musicians and local artists two hours before sunset and two hours after sunset, and is the perfect way to cap off a day at Clearwater Beach!

Where to stay: Centrally located in the heart of Clearwater Beach is where you will find the Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach. This gorgeous resort, which opened its doors in 2017, boasts 343 luxuriously appointed guest rooms with spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway. For Dolphin Tale fans, the resort offers a unique feature: Winter the Dolphin-themed bunk rooms which include bunk beds for the kids and a king bed for mom and dad. Book this room and a portion of the cost will be donated back to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to support the care of Winter and other rescued marine animals. Other amenities include a spacious pool overlooking the beach, a full-service spa (which welcomes kids ages 13 & up), a 24-hour fitness center, multiple dining options, easy access to Beach Walk and Pier 60 and complimentary use of the clamshell cabanas and lounge chairs on the beach in front of the resort.

Jekyll Island, GA

S. Massey

With miles of wide, flat beaches, bike trails through Spanish-moss-covered live oaks, and wildlife interactions at world-class facilities, Jekyll Island is a family vacation jackpot only four-and-a-half hours from Atlanta. One of Georgia's barrier islands, it was once a privately owned island by industrial era millionaires who used it as a sporting club. It is now one of Georgia's most untouched barrier islands—thanks to a stipulation that it should remain no more than 30% developed when it was sold to the State of Georgia in 1947 and established as a State Park. Stay at the Jekyll Island Club Resort the recently revitalized historic resort, for an experience that is as family-friendly as it is charming.

What to do: For the beach lovers, Jekyll Island offers wide, flat beaches that are particularly appealing to kiddos for their endless supply of castle-ready sand that doesn't seem to invade swimsuits and swim diapers as much as the fluffy white dunes found at the Gulf. And while many of the beaches on Jekyll Island are sure to please, don't pass up a chance to take the littles to Driftwood Beach.

Where to eat: While the island's developed space is limited, there are still plenty of dining options for families. Playground-side pizza at Red Bug Motors Pizza is served up hot and al fresco, Zachary's River House overlooks the Jekyll River, and Tortuga Jacks dishes solid Mexican food and live music nightly. Additional options can be found at the newly developed Beach Village (The Jekyll Market—complete with a deli, bbq and ice cream options—Fuse Frozen Yogurt, and the Jekyll Island Seafood Company, to name a few) and in the historic district.
