Fun Kids’ Nail Polish Brands That Leave Out the Bad Stuff

Kids get into stuff like nail polish much sooner than you think. Before you know it, your kiddo might be wanting to tag along with you for your monthly mani/pedi or pointing out colors in the nail polish aisle at the store. And as fun as that is (because it most definitely is!), nail polishes in general can be filled with a ton of chemicals we’ve never even heard of. The good news? Our fingernails and toenails are made of keratin, which is hard and mostly impenetrable. Once nail polish dries, your nails won’t be absorbing the ingredients. That might be a relief for us adults, but when it comes to kids nail polish, it’s a little different.

Since little ones have incredibly sensitive skin, not to mention their tendency to put everything (hands and fingers included) into their mouths, sticking to kids nail polish formulations is a really good idea. Non-toxic nail polishes typically range from ‘3-free’ to ‘all-free’, meaning they don’t contain X-amount of the chemical hard-hitters. We also like opting for plant-based, cruelty-free, vegan, and/or water-based formulas. Even better news? 6 Epic Backyard Hacks to Use This Summer

The warm weather is finally here, and you know what that means: It’s time to pull out all your backyard hacks because the kids can go outside to play! Think of all the raisins and Cheerios that won’t be all over your carpeting—the spills, the scuffs, and the accidents which won’t be on your couch.

Packing up and going to the park is fun for the kids, but not always practical for you. Depending on the ages and interest levels of your children, going to the park can require an unlikely consensus, as well as a lot of gear you will likely only need if you don’t pack it.

It would be ideal if you could just send them outside in your backyard and let them have at it while you work on preparing dinner, cleaning up after the last meal, or getting some work done.

It doesn’t take a lot of space to make your backyard fun—just some planning and implementation. You can’t do it all, but you can do quite a bit with some simple changes. Work with what you have and try to make your backyard the best place for your kids to play this summer.

Organize a Treasure Hunt

Use some of the toys you have been stepping on inside your house as hidden treasures in a backyard scavenger hunt. Make this event big or small, depending on how many children you have or how many neighbor kids you have hanging around your house.

Hide the toys in places that are easy or challenging to find, depending on how busy or frustrated you want your children to be. Everyone can be a winner. Award them with a healthy snack or treat them to cookies and milk. Discuss the hunt and come up with new backyard games you can play.

Create an Obstacle Course

For older children who have some athletic ability, set up an obstacle course and have them compete to see who can complete it the fastest. Have them jump through hula hoops, duck under rope barriers and crawl through empty boxes. Use what you have around the house or in the garage. Just make sure the items are clean and nontoxic.

Prepare for arguments about who won the event, who cheated, and what was and was not fair about the obstacle course. It’s all part of the fun.

Set Up a Playset

Who needs the park when you can build your mini-park in your backyard? Playsets provide many activities in one connected structure. You can have a swing set, slides, climbing walls, forts, rope swings, or any number of attachments.

Pick out which activities suit your children’s desires and abilities, but make sure to account for the future. They grow up fast and will outgrow a playset designed only for toddlers. You don’t want to have to buy another playset in only a few years.

Get bucket swings for babies and toddlers, but use regular swings for school-aged children. Attach a tunnel the kids can run through and hide in. It’s up to you, but realize you can always add on and remove pieces as your children grow older.

Add a Sandbox

A sandbox is so much fun for kids, whether it is a standalone structure or a part of a playset. You can construct them from simple wooden boards or purchase specially designed sandboxes that look like colorful animals, cars, or spaceships.

Most home improvement stores sell sand designated for play, which is inexpensive and clean. Add a set of beach buckets and shovels, toy trucks, and any household containers, and your children will stay busy for hours.

Give Them a Chalkboard

If you have some wall space, even if it’s on a fence, give your kids a chalkboard to write on. Chalk is cheap, and kids love coloring with it. Pus, giving them a chalkboard means less chalk on your house or garage.

Tack up a chalkboard or buy chalkboard tiles sold in home improvement stores. Provide a bucket or other container for the chalk, so you don’t end up mowing over chalk chunks every week. Your kids can use chalk to make hopscotch boards, tic-tac-toe games, or for artistic endeavors. When they’re finished playing, you can easily wipe or sweep the chalk off, or you can wait for the rain to clear the boards and force your children to start over.

Build a Tree Fort

If you have trees, you can make your kids a tree fort. It can be simple — a few boards designating an area, or an elaborate dwelling built high above. It all depends on your budget, your intentions, and your abilities.

Take your children’s age into consideration before constructing a tree fort. Also, if you are concerned about their safety, start with a fort near a tree, not in a tree. They will enjoy this just as much, and you won’t have to worry about falls.

Attach a Tire Swing

Instead of a fort, you can use your tree’s limbs to attach a tire swing. Your kids won’t ever tire of a tire swing, although you may get sick of constantly pushing them. You can repurpose tires from areas where they litter a neighborhood or use your old car tires after you’ve purchased new ones for your vehicle.

Use sturdy nylon rope to attach the tire to your tree. Make sure the arc of the swing does not allow your children to smash into the house, other trees, and structures, or your neighbors’ property.

Whatever kind of backyard you have, make it the most fun backyard for your kids to play in. Use some of these ideas or come up with new ones of your own. Ask your children to help brainstorm. They won’t disappoint you with how creative they can be, even if their ideas may be unrealistic. You may not be able to dig an underground tunnel to their friend’s house, but you will find ways to make their backyard the best place to play this summer. Slather them in sunscreen and turn them outside for summertime fun they’ll never forget!

Jenna Dewan Gives a Sneak Peek Inside Her Baby’s Nursery

When preparing your new baby’s room, there is much to consider. Parents look to incorporate comfort, safety and style. Jenna Dewan and her fiancé, Steve Kazee, achieved all three when they partnered with Pottery Barn Kids to design their baby’s nursery.

The minimalistic black and white color palette is paired with organic and sustainable materials. Pottery Barn Kids’ GREENGUARD certified products helped Dewan create an enchanted forest-like atmosphere.

“We wanted a calm, neutral, chic and peaceful feeling to the nursery,” Dewan told PEOPLE. “Loved the white, gray and black palette with touches of whimsical gold and playful animal icons.”

GREENGUARD-certified nontoxic products are screened for thousands of chemicals to help create a less-polluted environment for newborns. Dewan selected many products from this line, including ike the West Elm x Pottery Barn Kids Modernist Convertible Crib ($799 to $1,098) and Bedford Swivel Glide ($629 to $749). It’s happened to many of us—our friend, our siste, or neighbor have their first (or second) baby and after waiting a few days or weeks until we are welcomed to visit the little baby, we wonder what we can bring that is appropriate for a new mom and/or baby.

First of all, let’s put all the focus on mom. Baby is obviously super important, but that goes without saying. Honestly, baby doesn’t know which way is up, what is light or dark, really anything other than knowing whether or not a nipple is in her mouth at this point, so baby will be ok if your focus at your visit is mostly on Mom.

Mom may be doing just hunky dory or she may be falling apart. She may want to talk about this, she may not. She may look like a hot mess when she opens the door (and that’s ok!) and the house may be a disaster zone. Either way, focus on mom. Take off your shoes, wash your hands, and ideally bring something that will make her smile. Flowers are nice, and a casserole will be appreciated, but let’s raise the bar a little.

And don’t overstay your welcome. Depending on how close you are to said mom, you can offer to hold the baby while she showers or naps, or offer to cook a meal or do the dishes, and this is different for every situation.

If you are super close to the new mom, here are a few ideas for what to bring:

Champagne, or her favorite wine. Yes, everyone has an opinion for whether or not moms “should” have a drink while breastfeeding. If you need some stats on that, you can visit Kelly Mom for some great advice. If you know that your friend would smile when you walk in the door holding her favorite bottle of bubbly, then do it. Let her decide what is best for her. Bring the orange juice too.
Soothies Gel Pads for nursing moms. This is more of a mom (who’s been there) to mom type of gift. It would be really cute in a gift bag with a tried and true nursing bra or lactation tea. These little gel pads were a life-saver for me and I didn’t even know I needed them until someone special sent them to me.
A nursing pillow or something snuggly. You know your friend. Might she need a nursing pillow? A soft robe? Slippers? Something cuddly means comfort. And we want to comfort a new mom.
A funny movie or book you are confident she will enjoy. Something you two have talked about, a old movie from when you were kids, or an enjoyable parenting book that you cherished as a new mom. Try to avoid anything TOO tearjerky, she can do that on her own right now.
Something to babywear. This is best if you are a lover of babywearing and have a recommendation for her. This concept can seem foreign to new moms, but will actually SAVE their lives if they know how to do it properly (I did NOT know about the benefits of a wrap as a new mom until someone recommended one to me, a wrap with a new baby is different than a carrier you would use out and about with a bigger infant or toddler). You being able to show her how to you use it is going to make all the difference. And when she gets through the 4:00-7:00pm hour with 50% less cries that night, she will thank you.

If you’re maybe not THAT close to mom but still, want to bring something special…

A healthy meal. In the spring and summer, bring a fresh salad with a lot of vegetables to nourish mom as she heals and makes milk for baby. In the fall and winter, a warming, vegetable based soup. Bonus for homemade. Try not to focus on anything overloaded in dairy, onions, garlic, broccoli, or any super spicy foods. Baby will not appreciate it.
Rosewater mist. Keeping in mind that food should be healthy, and anything mom and baby are exposed to should be NONTOXIC. Something with a lot of fragrance or chemicals is a big no no for nursing moms and babies. This will be so cooling and refreshing for her (when she doesn’t get to shower as often as she wants and is more exhausted than ever).
Body butter, body lotion, or a scrub that she can enjoy that is just for her, not for baby. Time alone and time reminding her that she is still a woman with her own body is going to be a little harder now, and this will give her something to treat herself to when she does get that opportunity (to shower). Remember, less fragrance and chemicals is key, check out Beautycounter for safe products for both mom and baby.
Something for baby. A thoughtful outfit or toy that shows you are welcoming baby into the world. Although this is mostly about what to bring mom, something for baby is sweet too. Pretty bibs, burpy cloths, soft blankets and onesies are lovely for newborns (and you can’t really have enough).
A journal. A mom’s mind is on overload of gratitude, panic, love, emotions and fear. Remembering these early days (that will quickly become a blur) will someday be cherished and journaling is a wonderful way for her to document this time. Writing out her thoughts and feelings can also help with any baby blues or emotions she is struggling with.

Personally, I went through a very mature “I can do it all by myself” phase shortly before crumbling into an “I can’t do anything” phase as a new mom, so you never know what you are going to get. That being said, be prepared for Mom to reschedule or cancel at the last minute and LET IT BE. She still loves you, and you can see her again soon. She wins this one, no matter what it is.

Sit Still Kids
This spa and salon was created by a Portland mom who understands kids. The fun environment will capture your kids’ attention and they offer a full suite of salon services for littles including several manicure and pedicure options.

Sit Still’s mini-manis cost $15 and their mini-pedicures cost $20. Both include soaking, filing and polish. While Sit Still is open to kids of all ages, they advise that parents should only treat their little ones to these services if they can “sit still” long enough for the nail polish to dry! That said, they recommend mani/pedis for kids age 3 and up. The nail technicians are all patient, and gentle and they use safe and sanitary equipment and tools.

In addition to manis and pedis, Sit Still Kids offers hair cuts and ear piercings as well.
