How to Stay Sane as a Stay-at-Home Parent

Being a stay-at-home parent can be a lot of fun, and sometimes I almost feel guilty when I’m out playing with the kids at a park or building a blanket fort instead of working at an office. But, as rewarding as it can be, it’s often challenging. Sometimes it’s tough to take care of yourself with little ones demanding your constant attention, and sometimes you might just miss the structure of your old life and interaction with other adults. Lucky for you, after a few years of staying home full-time, I’ve got a few simple tricks up my sleeve that might help you keep your sanity.

1. Get Dressed & Ready for the Day. It took me awhile to figure this one out. Even though it’s tempting to sit around in your pajamas for the first half of the day—especially if you spent half the night rocking and/or nursing a restless infant—it really does make you feel more human to put on some real pants and brush your teeth first thing in the morning. If you’re like me you might need a few moments alone with your coffee first, and that’s fine. But if you get ready bright and early, you might just feel more energized to take on the day. Better yet, if you have the time to put on a little makeup and even do your hair, you will feel like a rockstar (Pro Tip: a little sea salt spray + wet hair = beach waves). Of course, sometimes that’s easier said than done, but brushed teeth and pants are a must.

2. Don’t Stay Home…at Least Not All Day. Just because you are a stay-at-home parent, doesn’t mean you should literally be home all day. Day after day, your home might just start to feel like a prison. Instead, try to plan at least one outing a day. Whether it’s taking your kiddos out for a walk at the park, storytime at the library, or even a trip to the grocery store, the change of scenery will work wonders for your mental health. Your kids will appreciate it too! Sometimes a fussy toddler or grumpy big kid just needs some fresh air and a little adventure in their day, just like us grown-ups.

3. Take Advantage of Nap & Quiet Times. Now, when I say this, I don’t mean take advantage of nap time by cleaning the whole house or scrubbing grout with a toothbrush. If it makes you feel better, spend a little time picking up or loading the dishwasher, but then spend a little time on yourself too. You probably took breaks when you worked in an office, and you need and deserve a break now that you are home too. After all, you are human. Have a cup of tea, do some yoga, or watch YouTube videos for 20 minutes—whatever helps you turn off your parent brain for a bit. Maybe you can even get back to that hobby you never seem to have time for anymore. And if your kids are too big for naps (or think they are, at least), make sure to have them do a little quiet time on their own so you both can recharge.

4. Stick to a Schedule. I’m not a very organized person, nor would anyone describe me as Type-A or anything along those lines. However, after doing this mom thing for a few years now, I have learned that we need to have some form of a daily schedule, especially during breaks from school when everyone is home all day. For us, we tend to do our outing in the morning since the 2-year-old naps in the afternoon. This makes our very basic schedule look something like this: breakfast, playtime, snack, outing, lunch, nap time, playtime, and finally TV time while mom makes dinner. It may sound simple, but I think we all like knowing what to expect at different times of the day. It makes it a lot easier to move on to the next activity if your little ones tend to drag their feet for certain things, like nap time.

5. Embrace the Fact That a Little Screen Time Is Okay. This is something you can use your own judgment on, but I personally don’t know how I would get any housework done or make dinner every night if my kids didn’t watch any TV. As I’m sure your doctor has told you by now, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time under age 2 and two hours or less a day for older children. So, you should do what you think is best for your family. But I would be lying if I said my kids didn’t get any screen time before age 2. When I start feeling a little mom-guilt over this, I try to remind myself that my parents didn’t limit my screen time at all, and I turned out pretty okay. For your older kids who are allowed to get a little screen time, try not to think of it as a negative thing. There are some awesome kids shows that are actually educational and teach kids about things like sharing and kindness. This is all my way of saying that if you need 20 minutes to clean the kitchen, don’t feel too guilty about allowing a little screen time to get it done.

6. Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself. Like any job, some days are great while others leave you on the couch with a pint of ice cream by the end of the night. Just remember that you are doing your best, and try not to compare yourself too much to other parents. When you feel good about what you are doing, your kids will too.

The Case of the Missing Breast Pump

I was four months postpartum. I was struggling with nursing my son, but we had a wedding we had already committed to going to. I was so nervous because I was worried I’d lose my breastmilk supply for not nursing for so long. I spent the entire day packing myself a little bag full of my supplies. My breast pump, bottles, an icepack inside an insulated cooler for my milk, my nipple cream, etc…I was packed and ready.

I needed to run to the bathroom real quick and figured “Hey, why not rely on my sweet reliable awesome husband to put my bags in the car?” You know, I trusted him so much I didn’t even think to check all the bags made it into the trunk. 

About 25 minutes into our drive, I told my husband I’d probably have to pump upon arriving and once again before the reception starts. His response, “Well, did you bring your pump?” I looked at him and said, “Well duh, you packed the bags in the car, right?” Nope. He only grabbed one bag. My purse. Which, thanks hunny, I did need that. But I really needed the pump more.

At this point, the panic started to set in. This was our first long outing without my son. It was about 50 miles away from home. And already late at night. Once I calmed down, I figured I could just run to a local Target or Walmart and pick up a little cheap hand pump. Well get this, we get to Target, run in, and they were sold out of hand pumps. The next best thing was a $100 electric pump.

At this rate, I was thinking I could just grab some bottles, a little cooler and manually express myself. We were now running about 15 minutes late to this wedding we had already driven so far to get to and decided that would be the plan. During the first “manual” pump, I sat in the car all by myself with my husband’s shirts hanging on the windows for some privacy. I was trying so hard to express anything but just kept getting a drop, drop, drop. I never even had a letdown, yet my breasts felt so full and engorged by this rate.

I sat in the car and shed a few tears, I mean come on, can ya blame a girl with breasts full of milk who is pumpless and it’s the first long outing away from her baby? Talk about the worst-case scenario. I tried going back inside and running some paper towels under warm water to try and warm compress, but that didn’t work either.

Looking back I think I was so stressed it definitely played into my ability to have a letdown. Also looking back, I will never let my husband pack my pump again, well I probably will, but that trust is hard to regain. I mean, lesson truly learned. By the time we got home that night (and yes, we ended up leaving early), I was able to nurse my son and relieve all the pain and pressure from the milk.

So new mama, my tip to you? Take a moment to double-check that you’ve packed your breast pump and that it’s also in the car.

Should You Tip the Babysitter?

I know from my own experience as a parent with young children that the costs of a night out plus paying the sitter can sometimes make even the briefest outing… out of financial reach. So I’m not surprised when parents ask questions relating to compensation for the occasional babysitter. What is the going hourly rate? Should one tip? What about providing meals and snacks? Should you provide access to Netflix, etc…?

As it turns out, I was just in the position of hiring a babysitter for my granddaughter, so I had recently pondered some of these same queries myself.

It appears that compensation varies from community to community, and you can get a good idea about the going hourly rate by asking around. The best practice is to inquire directly with the sitter about rates before booking. Rounding up to the nearest hour seems to be a common practice, whereas tipping is not. In our case, we knew that the sitter had traveled at least 45 minutes on the NYC subway in each direction, so we factored her nearly two hours of travel time into her compensation.

Of course, if your sitter pitches in to do a major clean-up or takes on some other household tasks, or if they are called upon to stay much longer than initially planned, they deserve additional compensation beyond their hourly wage.

I can’t stand the idea of not sharing food—when it seems that I always have way more than I need—so I usually encourage sitters to help themselves. However, that is an individual thing and may depend on the hours that the sitter is in your home. For example, a caregiver who is there from four until ten should be provided with dinner.

As someone who started babysitting as soon as I hit the double digits, age-wise, I have a great appreciation for the profession.

Both Sonic and Tom have different skills, but put together, their skills complement each other.

3. Parents will love the message of teamwork. Sonic can’t avoid the evil Dr. Robotnik without Tom’s help. Sonic and Tom make a great team because they work together to accomplish their goals. Dr. Robotnik, however, will not listen to the people who are there to help him, including his assistant. And while we can’t give away the ending, you can probably guess who the winning team is in Sonic the Hedgehog.

This Video of a T. Rex Race Is Prehistoric Perfection

Forget about the running of the bulls. At Emerald Downs racetrack its’s all about the dinos!

The racetrack recently gave the thoroughbreds that typically grace the races a break and held a costume-clad event—filled with T. Rexes.

In its third year, the T. Rex race is a sight to behold. The Jurassic beasts (a.k.a. people in costumes) line up at the starting gate and…they’re off and running. So how did this magical race happen?

According to NPR, the race started several years ago during the TriGuard Pest Control (of Renton, Washington) annual company outing. TriGuard sales manager, Cody Bennett, told NPR, “The first year, we attended the race in Hawaiian themed clothing.” The following year the company tried togas and in 2017 they switched to dino costumes.

While nothing beats a crowd of T. Rex’s weaving their way around a racetrack, this isn’t the only fun run Emerald Downs hosts. The track is also home to the dachshund-packed Wiener Dog Sunday and a corgi race!

Luna’s super-sweet day included mom, dad and a little lie. Legend chronicled Luna’s recent birthday outing, captioning one of the pics, “Luna had a Disneyland birthday today! )As far as she knows, her birthday is today. Don’t tell her it’s Sunday, please. Daddy has to work on Sunday. Thank you.”

Along with plenty of Disney play, the family met Princess Tiana and Aurora at the Disney Princess Breakfast Adventure. Even when you have two celeb parents, meeting the Disney princesses still takes the cake—whether it’s your actual bday or not!
