While fall may (technically) be the best season for a trip to wine country, families can (and should!) enjoy a kid-friendly trip to Sonoma and Napa any time of the year. With a world-class crop of family-friendly wineries in both spots (making the choice between Sonoma or Napa for kids even harder), we can guarantee that these wineries offer lots of kid-friendly activities, games to keep the little ones entertained, and loads of fun things to do nearby. You can feel good making any of these destinations a fantastic wine-centric family vacation.
This "green" kid-friendly winery welcomes children and four-legged furry friends alike (note: on a leash, please! The dogs, that is). After your tasting, you can stroll through their bountiful fruit and vegetable garden (no sampling, please!).
V. Sattui knows that there's nothing that pairs better with a great wine than some delicious meats and cheeses. Their artisan deli offers something for everyone—over 200 cheeses, desserts including creme brulee and gelato, and on the weekends you can dig in to some barbecued ribs and wood-fired pizza. Kids will enjoy romping through the over two acres of picnic grounds making this Napa Valley with kids spot a no-brainer.
With bocce ball, ladder ball, and corn hole games to keep them busy, this Oakville spot is a natural choice for families. Live music and plenty of picnic tables will make you sit and stay a while, making this one of the best family-friendly wine tastings around.
Nothing screams kid-friendly wineries in Calistoga more than an Italian castle replica from the Middle Ages. Book a guided tour that features everything from knight armor to a dungeon and a chance to meet the winery cats, dogs, and farm animals. Little royals can sip grape juice and enjoy coloring in the grand Knights Hall tasting room. Note: strollers are not allowed inside the winery.
This family-friendly St. Helena winery offers the coloring book, "Exploring the Napa Valley with Traveler Teddies," a kid-friendly guide to the Napa Valley, presented with a box of crayons to the youngest visitors. Dogs on leashes are also welcomed.

For a leisurely-paced tasting in a gorgeous setting, this is your spot. Drive down the long driveway and opt for an outdoor table. Kids and dogs are welcome and they usually have snacks and coloring books to keep the little ones occupied.
The benefit of visiting this spot is that there is literally something for every taste available. Burgers, cupcakes, oysters, and more—grab your fave, pick a table and dig in.
This ultra-kid-friendly spot should definitely be on your list when you visit wine country. They have an expansive outdoor eating area as well as an indoor dining area with a fun view of the open kitchen that the kids will enjoy. The menu of shareable items has something that everyone will enjoy. You'll love the property's retro vibe and the kids can play in the hammocks and sit by the fire pit while you savor your after-dinner drink.
The world-famous Boon Fly donuts are not to be missed on your next trip to Napa. A bucket of these babies for the kids and spicy bacon Bloody Marys for the grown-ups are the perfect way to start your day. Give the breakfast flatbreads a try. They won't disappoint!

Part living history museum and part culinary experience, the Napa Valley Wine train takes families on an idyllic journey up and down Napa all without the traffic. Train and food lovers alike will delight in this indulgent trip—this is one of our absolute favorite things to do in Napa.
Take a walk through this ancient forest where a volcano eruption turned trees into stone. You can explore on your own or take the docent-led 1.5-hour walk to learn about the area's history.
Spend a few hours exploring the property and watching the geyser erupt. Grab a picnic table or enjoy a game of bocce ball. The kids will be amazed to see the property's animals which include llamas, four-horned sheep, and the famous fainting goats!
If you are looking for an epicurean experience to share with the whole family, book a Sunday family cooking class at the CIA at Copia in downtown Napa. Here you'll get an interactive demonstration experience making dim sum, eclairs, mac and cheese, and more. Each class has a different theme and you just might get to sample your creations at the end!
Family fun and wine country are perfectly paired at this family-friendly hotel. Poolside cabanas invite families to long, lazy days by the pool while a bowling alley will challenge little bowlers to get their strikes on. We loved the Village green with its food trucks and lawn games while the adults wine tasted at one of the four tasting rooms. Acres of a working vineyard on site lets kids roam freely and is absolutely gorgeous at dusk. A short hike up to the famous "Crusher" statue will reward you with sweeping views of Napa Valley at your feet.
With cottages, suites, and residences, Carneros Resort and Spa is your go-to spot for a luxurious family getaway. During the summer months, parents can enjoy a night out while kids enjoy a delicious dinner, an array of fun and exciting games, and a kid-friendly movie. If you find you need a moment to yourself, take a dip in the adult-only pool while your partner takes the kids to the family pool.
350 acres means something for everyone at this family go-to. And while the grounds don’t look like much driving in, once you’re behind the wall kiddos get treated to a breadth of pretty lawns, ponds, paths, and fountains, and the California Mission Museum with its historic display of all 21 missions built to scale in 1939. They’ll love the turtles, fish, and exotic birds while you’ll love the wine tasting in a charming 1850s farmhouse.
Bartholomew Estate Winery sits within the 375-acre Bartholomew Park. Guests with children and leashed fur babies can purchase bottles at the winery and enjoy a picnic at the many gardens, lawns, and picnic areas. You can also purchase picnic blankets and to-go wine cups on-site. The park also offers over three miles of hiking trails to explore.
You'll love this stop as it has many kid-friendly favorites: fried chicken, biscuits, sandwiches, deviled eggs, pimento cheese, collard greens, and baked beans. Desserts include fried pies, milkshakes, and soft serve. Choose a spot on the patio where the kids can dig with the restaurant-provided dump trucks.
Right in the middle of Sonoma's central square, you will find the simple, delicious food of Sunflower Caffe. Open for breakfast and lunch, the lines can get long, but it's worth the wait to grab some farm-fresh eggs or the ever-popular grilled cheese sandwich. Their expansive back patio is full of water fountains and tons of spots to explore or sit for a bit.
One of Sonoma County's most popular family-friendly wineries, this spot has two pools, bocce ball courts, a movie gallery showcasing Coppola film props such as Don Corleone's desk from The Godfather and the original automobile from Tucker: The Man and His Dream. The dreamiest part: there's a poolside restaurant where wine and food can be delivered to parents while the littles splash around. You can even rent a cabana for the day for your own private changing area and shower.
The Dry Creek Valley is home to this scenic gem that offers creekside Adirondack chairs and picnic tables where you can enjoy a glass of their Salmon Run Zinfandel and, if you are lucky, spot one of the namesake fish as they spawn in the creek. Ask the winery staff for their special glasses that make spotting the salmon even easier. Kids will also love the goats, chickens, and organic gardens on the property.
Plan your visit to this Santa Rosa gem when the lavender is in bloom. The calming scent takes over the property and you will want to spend the day sipping sauvignon blanc as the kids play cornhole under the massive oak trees. Swing by the lavender market if you want to bring home some lavender-scented bath products or even a bunch of lavender grill sticks for your next barbecue.
While Mom and Dad taste wines at Belden Barns Farmstead & Winery in central Sonoma County, the kids can borrow the winery’s scavenger-hunt-style “adventure” backpacks and wander the 55-acre property in search of flora, fauna, and random or whimsical items—making this spot one of the best kid friendly wineries Santa Rosa has to offer. The backpacks are filled with field guides to local birds or insects, magnifying glasses, sketchpads, crayons, and a checklist of things to find. There are also plenty of games for kids to play. Wine tasting is by appointment only.
Kids are welcomed to this Healdsburg winery with LEGO bricks, crayons, and cornhole to keep them entertained while parents taste. Children may also explore the vineyards adjacent to the tasting room, join parents on a guided vineyard walk, and taste grapes during harvest. Reservations required.
Hop aboard the complimentary Horse Drawn Carriage Tour. Led by third-generation Sonoma Valley farmer Pat Prather, this tour dives into estate viticulture practices, winemaking techniques, and Sonoma wine history. You can also take a tour of their beautiful building built in 1905.
This Russian River Valley spot welcomes your two-legged and four-legged children to join you for a day of bocce ball and picnicking at their Sebastopol winery. Known for its laidback vibe and outstanding pinots, Furthermore is definitely a spot to spend the day.
As the name implies, this winery is also home to animals like sheep, hens, and occasionally pigs. Kids will love the many cats that roam the property (but leave Fido at home for this visit). Grab one of Preston's famed Rhône varietal wines and enjoy it with a picnic lunch on the grass. Grab some pastured eggs and ground lamb in the shop to take home with you (along with your vino, of course).
Kids can join in winery and cave tours with their parents, visit the vineyards, and enjoy the winery’s picnic area. They'll also get a chance to meet the winery dogs.
This 12-acre outdoor market district features delicious food, wine crafts, and so much more from over 30 local merchants. Stroll the dog-friendly campus, that was once an applesauce cannery, sip some local wines while the kids enjoy some organic ice cream and romp around on the lawn.
Husband and wife restaurateurs Chef Roberth and Andrea Sundell know what it's like to dine out with kids. Parents to four kids themselves, they opened Stockhome in their Petaluma hometown with a keen eye on what would be convenient for families. Kids will especially love the massive-but-delicate Swedish pancakes with fresh berries and vanilla cream and the pita pizza. Bonus: you can be sure they'll behave during the meal as you can bribe them with some of the restaurant's authentic Swedish candies as an end-of-meal treat.
Of course, a trip to wine country with kids doesn’t mean all wine, all the time. From train rides to trampoline parks, these amazing, kid-friendly destinations in Sonoma County will have your kids begging to return.
Generations of parents have made a pit stop at TrainTown, located just a mile down the road from Sonoma's main plaza. Take the 20-minute train ride around the park and then check out the other old-school rides—a carousel, Ferris wheel, dragon coaster, and more. Visit the miniature town and petting zoo before you head out.
This state-of-the-art fun and fitness center features a trampoline park, an arcade, a bowling alley, an indoor soccer field, laser tag, dining, and more. Put this on your list in case you encounter a rainy day on your wine-country weekend.
Kids of all ages will enjoy learning about long-time Santa Rosa resident and Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz at this museum with interactive exhibits, animated Peanuts specials, original comic strips, and more. Then head next door to the ice rink that Schulz had built in 1969 for some family skate time and snacks at the Warm Puppy Cafe.
For a real adventure, spend the day in the Sonoma Serengeti at Safari West. This accredited zoo offers guests who are four and older a tour of the 400-acre property in a safari Jeep. Younger guests will enjoy a walking tour where you can meet a flamboyance of flamingos and a tower of giraffes. Extend your stay in one of the property's tent bungalows and wake up to the sounds of wildlife.
You are going to love this spot right on the Russian River! Safari tents with actual beds are available for families with communal BBQs on site. Walk a few steps down to the river and spend the whole day tubing, catching fish, and enjoying the sun.
If you are looking for the ultimate luxury accommodations, this is the spot. Located in the quiet town of Calistoga, Solage has everything your family will need for their wine country stay. Cottage-style suites provide privacy for your family including outdoor patios to enjoy morning espresso or an afternoon glass of wine. Head to the pool to enjoy Picobar with poolside service. Bikes are available to borrow throughout the property and spa services are available on-site.
Camping in wine country! You can set up your tent, rent a cabin, or reserve one of the yurts that sleep up to six people at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. The park has a spring-fed pool that's great for cooling off when the days get hot. Explore the park's pioneer cemetery, hike to the Bale Grist Mill to learn about the milling process, and enjoy the trails and creeks. Old Faithful Geyser is just up the road.
Right off of 101, The Sandman's Santa Rosa location is super convenient for families visiting wine country. The welcoming staff and chill mid-century modern decor will make you feel relaxed the minute you arrive. Families will especially love the family suite—with plenty of room for everyone to spread out. Spend your days lounging by the heated pool where you can purchase snacks, ice cream, and their homemade Frozé (for the parents) at the Pool House & Bar. Summers at The Sandman bring their food truck nights and live music by the pool.
This family-friendly hotel is the mid-century modern resort of your dreams from the minute you walk into the gorgeous lobby. Families will love the deluxe family room that has a king bed for parents and a bunk bed in a separate room (with a door that closes! Hooray!). A mini fridge will keep your beverages chilled and the room's electric kettle is perfect for morning tea or hot cocoa. Spa facilities are available onsite so definitely book your massage to take full advantage. You can also check out the yoga classes and other wellness programs offered at the health club.

Whether you‘re a longtime resident or just visiting for a few days, these free things to do in LA will make sure you don‘t miss out on the best the city has to offer. The California African American Museum (CAAM) is the premier museum dedicated to African American art, history, and culture. Located in the heart of Los Angeles, CAAM has been a leader in the exhibition and interpretation of African American art, history and culture for over 30 years. Through its permanent collection and dynamic special exhibitions, CAAM provides visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the rich and diverse contributions made by African Americans to the culture, history and art of California and the United States. The museum also serves as a platform for emerging and established African American artists to showcase their work. CAAM is a vital resource for students, scholars and the general public seeking to understand African American history and culture.
This always-free-to-enter aquarium, located on the Manhattan Beach Pier, is home to over 100 different species of marine life (most of whom call Santa Monica Bay home), has four galleries where kids can explore and learn about sea life and home to our favorite animal encounters in LA where kids can get up close and personal with moray eels, rays, and octopi—not to mention get hands-on experience with starfish in the touch pools. The Roundhouse also offers summer beach camps and on-site classes for budding marine biologists (or any kid that just loves the water and all the animals that live in the sea).
Giant teacups, massive balloon animals, Alice in Wonderland-esque splashes of color and the Infinity Room will convince any kiddo that contemporary art is where it’s at. The museum "For Families" guide offers a "scavenger hunt" and fun art-themed activities. For older kids, they can also download and listen to a free audio tour which includes family-friendly information about the art. Tickets are released on the last Wed. of each month at 10 a.m. PT for admission the following month.
In addition to offering free admission, this UCLA art museum regularly hosts pop-up art studios for little ones, family-friendly movie screenings and guided tours-plus-games for kids ages 7 and up. A visit to the relatively small yet impressive (and manageable!) museum will expose kids to a range of artwork, from 17th century Rembrandts to the more contemporary work of Kara Walker.
Right in our home town is a world class museum that wants you to bring your kids so much that they created a fabulous program: LACMA NexGen membership where kids get in free along with one adult. It's a pretty amazing deal, especially when you realize that at LACMA, there are art exhibits that appeal to kids like rad modern art sculptures, a giant suspended rock and of course, every kid (and grown-up kids’) favorite, Metropolis II. There is also a painting studio in the Boone Gallery where your inspired little artists can create watercolor masterpieces and listen to story time. Tickets must be reserved in advance.
Where else can you see a space shuttle and a shark tank, not to mention play in one of three kids-only Discovery Rooms, explore rotating science exhibits and watch as baby chicks hatch? And all for free? Rainy days, hot days, vacation days, or just “I’m bored” days, the California Science Center is here for you. And, if you have a few extra bucks, you can round the day off with a spectacular 3D IMAX show.
Start your Aquarium visit with the sea stars in the simulated “tide pool touch tank” then spend your time winding through the thirty-eight aquaria. Don’t miss out on the favorite aquatic babies exhibit and let the little ones learn a little something at the research station. Be sure to look up and meet the giant whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling.
The museum is free for all but they do suggest a donation to help keep this wonderful community resource going. Parking is free and easy on the street or you can pay $1 per hour to park it right out front. The aquarium hosts loads of kid friendly activities and events, including the fabulous spring time grunion runs—a SoCal tradition.

Next door to LACMA are the famous La Brea Tar Pits. While the Page Museum at the center will cost you an entrance fee (unless you visit on the first Tues. of the month when admission is free), there is plenty to explore around the tar pits and gardens that surround the museum.
Check out Ice Age plant life in the Pleistocene Garden, roll down the grassy hills and learn all about being a paleontologist with a peek inside Pit 91 and Project 23, which are still actively being excavated. No visit would be complete without snapping a selfie with those perpetually stuck elephants in the bubbling tar pit. Advance timed tickets are required.
Spend a day at the Griffith Observatory, poking through the exhibits, figuring out your weight on Jupiter, looking through the telescopes, having lunch in the cafeteria and gazing out from the terrace, where you can see the whole city below. Free public star parties are held monthly, where kids can meet professional and amateur astronomers. And don’t forget about the Planetarium! There are currently two live shows scheduled every 60-90 minutes daily, for just $3-$7 (it’s the only thing at the Observatory with a fee, and kids under 5 can only attend the first show of the day).
If the kiddos need a break, there are beautiful hiking trails behind the Observatory with breathtaking views of the Hollywood sign.
If you want to avoid the parking lot, which fills up fast on weekends, hike one of our favorite trails, Ferndell. Then when you hike back, reward yourself with coffee and pie.
Every mini engineer and trainspotter will have a blast exploring this outdoor transportation museum dedicated to all things trains. You can climb around on real steam locomotives, check out wagons and other antique vehicles in the barn and even go for a ride on a mini train that circles the park for just $3.
Pack some snacks and grab a seat on the lawn where you can wave at the train as it drives past.

If you have a budding bookworm at home then a visit to your local library is always treat and LA is full of some really special kids collections. Come for the books and stay for the free story time at dozens of Los Angeles Public Library branches, but the coolest by far is the Central Library downtown which houses a massive children’s literature department and hosts story times, puppet shows, and music.
Our other favorite spots are the Santa Monica Main Library and Beverly Hills Library, both of which have awesome collections and kids activities.

There's always something fun happening here! Home to one of our favorite fountains and splashpads (when it's open for waterplay), playgrounds and outdoor art exhibits makes Grand Park a fun and easy destination for everyone in the family to spend the day.
LA is about as diverse as you can get and there's no better place to explore all the different museums, street art, playgrounds, (and ice cream shops!) than in a neighborhood near you.
Leave Runyon to the tourists. Instead, take your little trekkers to one of these lesser known trails where the views are still Instagrammable, but the crowds won’t overwhelm you. So your two-wheelings tots have maxed out on riding around the block? Fortunately, LA’s beach bike paths—along with a few other car-free paths and trails—are open. Finally, kids can feel the wind in their hair, practice their pedaling and enjoy a change of scenery. This awesome summer concert series and major fundraiser for Woodland Park Zoo returns this summer with an impressive lineup of Grammy winners and ZooTunes mainstays. Concerts at the Locks – Ballard
Most Saturday and Sunday afternoons (June through September), you can catch free summer concerts at the Ballard Locks. This summer’s lineup includes everything from “Big Bands” to a band that we’re really intrigued about: Tutti Flutti. Other bands worth mentioning include the Elliott Bay Pipe Band (playing on Father’s Day alongside the Mustangs Northwest Classic Car Show), a special 4th of July concert with music by the Seattle Civic Band and the Seattle Youth Symphony Chamber playing on July 24. Most concerts begin at 2 p.m., but be sure to check the online calendar for schedule changes before you head out. All concerts are free.

Sammamish Concerts in the Park
This Thursday evening summer concert series will return to Pine Lake Park starting July 7. In addition to great family-friendly tunes, you can give your kitchen the night off. Visit one of the local food truck vendors on site and find tasty ice cream treats from the Sammamish Kiwanis. This free concert series is the perfect venue for the kiddies to get their crazies out before bed.
Kids Summerstage and Summer Sounds – Auburn
Auburn’s Les Gove Park will be hopping with summer concerts for young and old-er. First, Kids Summerstage is an exciting entertainment series that promises to be fun for the kiddos as well as the caregivers who bring them. Make a playdate, pack up a picnic lunch and meet up at on Wednesdays at noon sharp. Concerts and demonstrations will be presented next to the Discovery Playground. Then on Thursday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m., Summer Sounds will present family-friendly tunes by local tribute bands, flamenco music, symphony orchestras and even a “rock and roll hypnotist” (we kid you not). Music at the Marina – Everett The Everett Events Foundation presents Music at the Marina at Port Gardner Landing with free summer concerts on Thursday nights. In addition to the toe-tapping tunes, food trucks, a beer garden and the Everett Makers Market will be in full swing too. The event opens at 5 p.m. with all-ages outdoor concerts beginning at 6:30 p.m. Don’t forget to bring $5 for parking!
Kenmore Summer Concert Series
Enjoy four weeks of free, diverse outdoor concerts on Thursday nights starting July 7. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and dinner and enjoy these outdoor concerts in beautiful Saint Edward State Park with free admission and free parking (Discovery Pass not required after 4:30 p.m. for concert go-ers). Lake Tapps is where your family is going to want to hang out this summer with two nights of free summer concerts every week starting on July 6. On Wednesday evenings, enjoy the Outdoor Market at 5 p.m. and then stay to listen to great live music by groups like Wally and the Beaves, The Beatniks, Victims of Love and more. Monday nights are Kids Club with concerts by Ella-Bella Bee and the Pollinators, Capt’n Arrr, the Not-Its! and more. All concerts begin at 6:30 p.m.

Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery Concerts – Woodinville
The outdoor concerts at Ste. Michelle are geared for adults, but kids are welcome (a ticket is required for children age 2 & over, but they can still attend for free). Marymoor Concerts – Redmond
Marymoor Park in Redmond is one of the largest outdoor venues locally with a capacity to hold 5,000 people with some big names (and ticket prices) to match. You can pack up your own picnic (no glass or metal containers, or beverages other than reusable water bottles), or you can purchase food and drinks at the park. Concert bands include Ween, The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, The Head and the Heart and Phoebe Bridgers, among others. Everyone over the age of three will require a ticket, and kids under age 6 are asked to stay out of the reserved section as it’s pretty loud for little ears.

Visit the Goats in Riverside Park The goats are back to help control the invasive weeds in the park. The "Running of the Goats" (when they enter the park) happens on June 29 at 11 a.m. at Riverside Park and 120th Street. But you can stop by and say "hello! all summer long!

Visit Coney Island. Coney Island is open, with the famous Cyclone celebrating 95 years, and the planned debut of a new family-friendly rollercoaster, log flume and ropes course at Luna Park. Deno's Wonder Wheel's new family thrill coaster, The Phoenix is now open. The world-famous Mermaid Day Parade, celebrating 40 years, is June 18. They’re back! And the Washington State Fair is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to family-friendly fall festivals. Harvest Festival at Nelson Farm

Whether you've got a Suncadia stay planned for the fam (lucky you!) or you're just heading up for the day to enjoy the mountains, the Harvest Festival at Nelson Farm puts all things fall at your fingertips. If you haven't picked out your pumpkin yet, stroll through the Nelson Farm patch to find the perfect one. Stay to enjoy a wagon rides as a family, live music and a vendor market. Your kids will love wandering through the hay maze, climbing the hay pyramid, getting their faces painted and meeting animals at the petting zoo. Plus, everyone can take aim at the archery range. You've got two weekends to make it happen!
Families in Washington have been "doing the Puyallup” for over 100 years, and after last year's hiatus everyone is excited it's back. This year's state fair opened Labor Day weekend and will be open daily (with the exception of Tuesdays and Wed., Sep. 8) through September 26. If you want to see and do it all, you’d better plan on waking the kids up early. In addition to returning favorites that families love, like The Farm at SillyVille and Outpost 47 (the family-friendly, free concert stage), you and your crew will want to catch the Budweiser Clydesdales at the Western Rodeo Cattle Drive & Parade or in the Pierce County Arena during draft shows (Sep. 10-16) and the new Hall of Heroes exhibit that immerses visitors in the world of crime fighters, superheroes and spies. Plus enjoy the amusement park rides and games, fair food (Hello, fair scones!), 4-H animals, arts and crafts and hundreds of vendors.

Music that's good for your soul. That's the vibe of this good-time street festival that features brass bands of all shapes and sizes, plus African and Brazilian drum and dance, too. Sixteen bands will make music throughout the day at this outdoor festival, and the whole shebang ends with a community jam at 7 p.m. Get ready to tap your feet and cheer on these phenomenal musicians. And don't forget those ear plugs for the kids!

Celebrate ChuSeok, the Korean Harvest Moon Festival, in the South Sound in 2021. The Asia Pacific Cultural Center is making it easy for families to get in on the celebration by hosting two events (one in Gig Harbor and one in Tacoma the following weekend) guaranteed to double the fun. We know your kids will love watching the Mun Dance Team and UW student-led K-POP group, The Kompany. Then wander the grounds in search of your favorite Korean eats, cultural presentations, Tae Kwon Do demos and a thrilling drum performance by Thunder and Wind.

Fiestas Patrias is an expression of Latino culture including music, dance, food, folklore and more. The annual two-day event will be celebrated virtually and in-person this year. Families can enjoy a livestream presentation on September 18, starting at noon, in partnership with Seattle Festál. Then on September 19, there will be an in-person health fair (including a vaccine event) at the Sea Mar Community Center in the South Park neighborhood.
Take the whole fam to Remlinger Farms for a super-fun fall outing. In addition to a hay maze, corn maze and pony rides ($5), there will be plenty of mini-carnival rides—25 to be exact—including a roller coaster and Ferris wheel, electric cars, flying pumpkins and a horse carousel. If that’s not enough excitement, head over to the barn to visit with the farm animals, pick the perfect jack-o-lantern at the U-pick pumpkin patch (included with your ticket price) and enjoy plenty of yummy food and apple treats (think pies, turnovers and caramel apples) at the farm market.
Good to know: If your little wrangler has their heart set on a pony ride, be sure to reserve your spot in advance.

Be a part of this floating festival that bring light, hope and a sense of connection to families across the country. The Water Lantern Festival will be back at Green Lake this year for another launch. Families can enjoy food, games, activities, vendors and music as they work to create and then decorate their own floating lanterns. Then as the sun begins to set, everyone gathers to launch their message of hope, peace, health and happiness along the shores as participants Light the Water. Take time to enjoy the glow!
This annual festival, produced by Northwest Folklife, is returning in its virtual format again this year! Last year's event featured a virtual smorgasbord of kid-favorite activities including music, dance, stories, educational programming and more, paired with a virtual passport. Although details are still being worked out for this year's festival, families can expect the same thoughtful programming that brings fun and a sense of community home.
Fox Hollow is bringing the fun to fall this year with two different festivals families can attend. During the day Fall Fun event, families can meander through the adventurous trail that leads them through a hay maze, along the Issaquah Creek, ending at a pumpkin patch, full of gord-geous pumpkins waiting to go home with you. The trail takes about 35-45 minutes to complete and you'll need to purchase tickets (for a two hour window) online before heading over. If you've got older kids, give the Haunted Hollow trail a try on Saturday nights. Thousands of twinkling lights, bonfires and torches will light the way along the path and there will be s'mores waiting for you at the end. Tickets are also needed for this event.
Good to know: Fall Fun runs Fridays through Sundays until Oct. 3 when it moves to Wednesdays through Sundays. Haunted Hollow is Saturdays, starting September 25.
Insider tip: Put Fox Hollow’s Halloween Carnival on your calendar for Oct. 30. It’s a chance for kids to don their costumes and treat bag and make their way around the farm gathering candy goodies.

Since 1988, Festa Italiana has been a labor of love from a community of Italian American volunteers providing this free event of Italian food, arts and culture at the Seattle Center. And this year, the event coordinators are thrilled to announce it's the first in-person event at Seattle Center in nearly two years. Highlights of the two-day fest include cooking demos by celebrity chefs, a bocce tournament, a grape stomping competition, kids' activities and the hugely popular group pizza toss.
Your family has been invited by the Lord of Camlann to go back in time and attend his Michelmasse Festival with demonstrations of fresh cider pressing, puppetry and music by Jacob Priestly’s Troop Man in the Moon. Leavenworth's beloved annual Oktoberfest will have a significantly different vibe this year, but there's still every reason to visit this themed mountain village this fall. Families will love the "street fair" vibe and casual feel of this year's festival that focuses more on local shops and makers than it does on beer. Lining the streets of downtown Leavenworth, you'll find 100 vendors, crafters and artists showcasing their wares. But families can still expect the special Kinderplatz area with activities kids will love. The upside of the changes? There's no cost to attend the event.
Issaquah’s Salmon Days is a celebration of the return of salmon to their "birth-waters” as well as the city’s history, culture and diversity. Each year, the festival attracts hundreds of artists and crafts people and presents live music and entertainment, plus sporting events, a carnival, a huge food court. Much of this year's festival is still in the planning stages, but families can rest assured that the salmon will be welcomed in style this year too.
Celebrate fall (and everything it brings with it) at Kelsey Creek Farm again this year. That's right, one of the Eastside's best fests is back for 2021! It features a variety of old-time activities and plenty of farm fun. Look forward to animal encounters, a petting zoo, 4-H animal demonstrations, interactive children’s activities and food, plus heritage demonstrations and activities by the Eastside Heritage Center, tractor-pulled wagon rides and more!
Good to know: As there is limited parking, there is usually a shuttle that runs from Wilburton Park & Ride and Banner Park.
Who says LEGOs are just for kids? BrickCon is an annual convention put on by adult LEGO hobbyists that runs every year (except for 2020) during the first week of October. During the last two days of the convention, the public is invited to see what these creators of colorful bricks have come up with at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. And this is no ordinary LEGO store display. Here, you will see hundreds of builders with their models that feature tens of thousands of pieces. Some will even be on hand to share their love of brick building with you and will give out a few pointers as well. Plus, you can find cool sets, parts and minifigs at the Brick Bazaar.
Good to know: No strollers are allowed.

Whether you’re gliding across snow-capped fields or gliding down the rails of downtown Chicago, there are holiday train and sleigh rides you shouldn’t miss. Relive the magic of the holiday classic The Polar Express with a one-hour train ride to meet Santa, set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack. Passengers will climb aboard The Polar Express and work their way through the car to punch their golden ticket before indulging in hot chocolate and a cookie served by dancing chefs. Bring your books, if you have them, for a read-along of the book written by Chris Van Allsburg. Santa and his elves will make an appearance to greet passengers with the first gift of Christmas and characters on each car will lead riders in an immersive onboard experience—just like in the film! Each person will take home a keepsake sleigh bell and golden ticket to remember the cherished evening.
Take a breather after a long morning of Black Friday shopping and kick off the holidays the right way—with fun on the farm. Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm hosts Cottonwood Christmas with activities, food and fun for the entire family. Activities include sleigh rides, Santa meet-and-greets, petting zoo, train rides, giant mountain slide, play areas, candy cannon and more.
Santa and his merry band of elves will make an appearance on every El line this holiday season. In fact, the big guy in red comes jingling his way through in grand style, pulled in a sled by faux reindeer. A gift from the Chicago Transit Authority, the festive El — decked out in colored lights, garland, bows and tinsel — arrives with pomp and glee, leaving you and your little ones smiling ear to ear long after your stop. You might even get a candy cane handout if you're onboard.

And what to your wondering eyes should appear? A decorated miniature open-air train that runs continuously through Aurora's living-history museum. Catch the Holiday Express train around Lake Gregory amidst thousands of twinkling lights. It's part of the farm's annual Victorian Christmas celebration, Holiday Express, which includes music, storytelling in a historic schoolhouse, a visit from Santa, craft stations and a Reindeer Food Bar.

Navy Pier Winter WonderFest Arctic Express Train

Hop aboard this family-friendly trackless train, which travels nearly 300 feet around a holiday village display during Navy Pier’s annual Winter WonderFest. Zig-zagging and weaving through lighted houses and scenes, you’ll meet favorite holiday characters and see lots of twinkling sights. The fun doesn’t end with the train; the festival also includes dozens of rides for all ages, including a climbing wall, ice skating rink, 50-foot-tall indoor Ferris wheel and more.

Get whisked away on a sleigh through beautiful hardwoods, many of which are over 100 years old. That's the scene at Apple Holler, just across the Wisconsin border. Halflinger horses take you and your family or friends on a special orchard tour, which winds down with S'mores and a cup of hot chocolate or tasty warm apple cider. While you're there, cut down your own Christmas tree. . . a festive activity that will surely become a family tradition.

The annual Homewood Holiday Lightscelebration in Homewood offers all the holiday traditions in one evening. The Martin Avenue Outdoor Market begins at 5 p.m. with food vendors, a live reindeer petting zoo, music by the Southwest Community Brass Ensemble, an ice sculpting demonstration and free rides on the Polar Express electric trackless train. An antique car show precedes the 7 p.m. tree lighting ceremony at Irwin Park, when Santa and his friends arrive on a fire engine to flip the switch for the grand tree lighting.
Gather in Homewood for Miracle on Martinto enjoy a bonfire with s'mores and beverages that will take the chill away. Santa will be at the Homewood Science Center, where you'll find a sensory-friendly holiday scene that sets the perfect backdrop for a quiet visit with the big guy himself. Horse-drawn carriage rides are available through the downtown area from 3 to 6 p.m. Holiday characters stroll Martin Ave along with holiday carolers. There is also a special “I Spy” community event with maps of the windows and lists of items to seek. Kids of all ages can fill out an “I Spy” treasure hunt brochure and receive a holiday treat.

Chicago’s big-daddy farmers market draws large crowds year-round. For the colder months, the market moves indoors to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, just a stone’s throw from its usual stomping ground in Lincoln Park. The market takes place every other Saturday through Apr. 28, when the outdoor market returns for spring. It’s a regular who’s-who of Midwestern vendors that come from near and far, so expect produce purveyors, cheese slingers, bakeries, pasta-makers, meat mavens, a honey co-op and lots more.
Kid Tip: Check out the Club Sprouts events, at which little connoisseurs are encouraged to take part in tastings and learn more about their local food.

This South Side community keystone is a hit in the warmer months, and now it’s bringing its heartwarming flavor to the frosty season. Located inside the Experimental Station, it takes place monthly through April, at which point it returns to its 61st Street roots. All the hearty, wintry essentials are present and accounted for, from sturdy greens to freshly baked breads. You’ll also scoop up fresh flowers and made-to-order crêpes.
Kid Tip: Ice cream from Yoberri Gourmet is a hit with the tot crowd.

One of the biggest and most family-friendly farmers markets in the city, this event is held indoors every Sunday through March 31 at the Emporium Arcade Bar Logan Square. It’s a food heaven featuring fruits, meats and veggies, plus sweets like cream puffs, chocolate truffles and baked goods.
Kid Tip: Make a meal of it. Try a freshly made breakfast sandwich from Mint Creek Farm or soup from Karl’s Craft Soup.

Evanston’s monthly indoor farmers market gives the North Shore its fill of farm-to-tote sauces, pastries, veggies, meats and other delectables. Frozen blueberries and luscious fruit preserves are a nice, tasty preview of warmer months to come. You’ll find hot prepared foods such as crêpes and tamales, keeping customers warm on the coldest of days.
Kid Tip: The market is held on the grounds of the Ladd Arboretum, which just so happens to rent snowshoes. Go ahead and try a new winter sport with the family.
