We love a good backyard upgrade. But there’s no outdoor glow-up without the best outdoor furniture. Sure, you might be playing games or mingling with friends, too, but one of the best parts of the season is relaxing, cold drink in hand (optional, but encouraged). The thing about yard furniture is that it’s not always practical, durable, cute, and comfortable. Blending those 4 things can be tricky, but we found pieces that absolutely check all the boxes!

From lounge chairs, dining sets, hammocks, and daybeds, this is the furniture that’ll take your backyard from “oh nice” to “oh wow!”. And of course we know that kids consider anything they can climb on a jungle gym, so we kept it all ready-for-anything. Easy to clean, care for, and store if needed, our picks for the best outdoor furniture will be the icing on your warm weather cake (cake icing in warm weather actually sounds terrible, but we know you get it). Grab your favorite beverage and check it all out below.

SUNFLOW The Shore Thing Chair

pink SUNFLOW beach chair
SUNFLOW

If there's anything we know for sure, it's that portable outdoor furniture is never comfortable. SUNFLOW proved us wrong, though. Sure, their thing is ultra-comfortable, lightweight, portable beach chairs. And we love a good beach.

But 'outdoor' doesn't just cover beach days. The backyard, the soccer field, company BBQs...there's nowhere you won't want to hang out in this chair (and it's so easy to take with you!). It reclines to 3 different positions and comes in fun, vibrant colors, so you'll want to grab more than one. So you don't have to share, of course.

It’s officially sweater weather, ya’ll. This means it’s the perfect time to plan a bonfire party with friends

A bonfire party is a perfect way to welcome fall. Create a fun, festive air that makes the most of cool nights with flickering flames, cozy conversation, and fall crafts. Think of it as camping without leaving the comfort of your own home! Whether you have outdoor space or not, you can easily host a bonfire party. Combine the best fireside desserts with not-too-spooky stories, the warm glow of a fire, and fall decorations, and you’ll be ready for an easy, fun family night.

Start by setting the scene

iStock

Part one? The bonfire!  You don’t need a big outdoor fire pit. Use an indoor gas or wood-burning fireplace and keep things cozy in your living room. Or, add ambiance with a tiny portable fire or a cluster of battery-operated candles. We love this mini portable bonfire that can be used indoors or out. You can toast marshmallows over even the smallest flames. If you don't have a fire pit in your outdoor space, consider getting a smokeless fire pit from Solo. Available in all different sizes, they're an easy and safe way to have a backyard fire. Add a few camp chairs around the portable stove and you’ll be set. If you've got really tiny kiddos, opt for a few safe, bonfire-themed toys, like a toddler-friendly felt bonfire.

Decide on your menu

Good food is a key ingredient for a bonfire party. Snack on s’mores-inspired treats like oven-made s’mores.  Or, set up a big spread with all the s’mores ingredients, and swap out chocolate for a peanut butter cup or peppermint patty to give your s’mores a memorable twist. Pick up a few extendable kid-friendly roasting sticks. To drink, add festive crock pot apple cider. If your party is at dinnertime, treat your guests to fondue or a decadent charcuterie board.

Plan activities perfect for a bonfire party

Games

If you have a bigger outdoor space or a yard to use, bring out oversized lawn games, and when it gets dark, turn out the lights and play fun flashlight games. For small or indoor spaces, plan on classic card games like Uno, your favorite board games, or easy tic tac toe.  Put together an epic mix to encourage dancing around the fire. Add fire-themed songs like Great Balls of Fire, Firework, or This Girl is on Fire.

Crafts

If you’ve got more of an arts-and-crafts crowd in your house, plan a bonfire-themed craft like making food coloring or glitter fireworks in a jar or creating a tissue paper fire. For the easiest project ever, put marshmallows on the end of sticks to use as paintbrushes—a fun tactile craft that’s super easy to put together. Stamping with marshmallows makes interesting dot patterns.

Cozy Activities

When the stars are bright and the flames are flickering, snuggle up under blankets and share some not-too-spooky ghost stories. Or, have a cozy conversation around the fireplace with clever conversation starters sure to get everyone giggling like “If you had to eat a worm, how would you cook it?” Finally, you can choose a movie the whole family will enjoy, like one of these Pixar movies ranked for parental enjoyment, kids’ movies parents love too, or one from our ultimate list of movies for kids.

Things to Consider When Hosting a Bonfire Party

family at a bonfire party
iStock

To keep everyone safe around the fire, make sure your kids know about fire safety: never, ever play with matches, don’t touch the fire itself, and keep a safe distance. Outdoor fire pits should be at least three feet away from anything that can catch on fire.

Be sure to douse all the flames at the end of the night, and check local guidelines before lighting an outdoor fire pit. Air quality restrictions or fire warnings might mean outdoor fires aren’t an option in your area.

If your kids aren’t quite ready for a real fire, substitute a cluster of battery-operated candles for flickering flames. You get all the glow and zero worries about burns.

We’ve got great ideas to help you make your hometown even better. Mr. Rogers would approve

There’s no time like the present to shower your neighborhood with a little extra love. You’ll teach your kids what it means to be a part of a real community and maybe even get to know a few new friends. From neighborhood scavenger hunts to Little Free Libraries, scroll down for community improvement ideas that can make your hometown just a little bit (or a lot!) more awesome.

1. Create an Instagram page for your community. Start documenting what makes your 'hood special, ala Bill Cunningham, whether it's the trees, the architecture, the people, or maybe, all of the above. This is something you can do while on small walks around your hometown and is a great way to share the messages of hope and inspiration out there.

2. Make seed bombs. This is a simple project, and it doesn't require a green thumb. Use this easy tutorial from Practically Functional, and then toss your supply in the dirt along roads and freeways. We suggest you use native wildflower seeds to curb any invasive species.

3. Redesign a crosswalk. Cities all over the nation are setting up community crosswalk programs, which allow artists to add an extra flair to the pedestrian's right of way. Keep in mind, things might be slower to happen because of staff considerations, but you can get the inspiration and apply now.

4. Plan to create a pocket park. Bringing more green space to urban landscapes takes time and planning, so now is a good time to start. The National Recreation and Park Association has a great guide on how to get one started.

Amber Guetebier

5. Dedicate a bench. Arrange for extra seats to be added to an outdoor space in honor of a loved one or just a spot to stop and sit for a spell.

6. Shop local. When you buy from a local business, you keep dollars where they belong—in the community. In this time of small-business closures, this is more important than ever. Many cities have started Facebook groups that promote local businesses and restaurants, and innovative businesses and restaurants are offering delivery and curbside pickup. Businesses that are closed, like your favorite hair salon, can be supported by buying a gift certificate now to use later.

7. Perk up your local park. See a broken swing or slide? Want to get new equipment added? Call your Parks & Rec department and share your thoughts. When things open back up, everything will be ready for kids to play, play, play.

8. Have a sidewalk chalk challenge. Sidewalk chalk is making a comeback, and it's always fun to spend time in the front yard, getting to know your community.

9. Volunteer or donate to a local food bank. Even if you aren't able to physically donate your time to a food bank, consider making a donation, as food insecurity is currently at an all-time high.

Gabby Cullen

10. Create a free little library. It'll be the best thing to happen to your neighborhood since Mr. Rogers. Check out our tips on how to create one here.

11. Support local schools. While there might not be spirit nights right now, your local schools might be running online fundraisers for students or teachers. Check your local school district website to find out more information.

12. Help out an older neighbor.  Reach out to see if you can pick up their groceries, prescriptions or dinner one night. Check out a few other ways to be a good neighbor here

13. Bike around town. Using your bike more often helps create the demand for more trails and lanes—and that means less car traffic.

iStock

14. Perk up your front porch. A statement door, a fun welcome mat, and flower pots are all easy ways to brighten up your home and your neighborhood.

15. Organize a neighborhood scavenger hunt. Whether it's animals, hearts, states or inspiring messages, organizing a community-wide search is a great way to get outside and to get to "know" your neighbors. You can share your list of finds with other families online and encourage everyone to see the beauty of their town...while still respecting social distancing.

16. Slow down. There are plenty of reasons why driving slower in a neighborhood makes sense—there have even been studies that prove it's a safer option for everyone involved.

17. Practice guerrilla gardening. Claim a plot of unused dirt for yourself and start planting. Click here for ideasor to find other guerrilla gardeners nearby.

18. Join the local open space alliance. This is the group that will fight to create a walking trail/wildlife refuge instead of another subdivision.

19. Jumpstart the Kindness Rocks movement all over again. Little pieces of art scattered around town? It's the perfect way to spread joy without being in a group. Find out how to get started here

Food carts, patios, sidewalk cafes, and more

From casual to extravagant, restaurants across the city embraced outdoor patio dining options—and families are here for it. Where else can you enjoy a meal in the fresh air, with space for your kids to explore and get the wiggles out? And with the summer weather holding strong, now is the perfect time to enjoy dining al fresco around town. Here’s our list of Portland restaurants with patios that are not only family-friendly but offer excellent bites to boot!

Mississippi Pizza Pub

This pizza bastion of kid-friendliness on Mississippi expanded during the pandemic to include outdoor seating both in the back (borrowing from their neighbors) and in front (using the parking plazas). There are regular shows and events held here, including family-friendly music performances, trivia nights, and special events for kids. Plus, the pizzeria has vegan and gluten-free pie options.

3552 N. Mississippi Ave.
Online: mississippipizza.com

Cadillac Cafe

A favorite for breakfast in Portland since 1989, this first-come, first-serve American-style diner offers outside dining on its backyard patio. You might miss out on seeing the still-drivable 1961 pink Cadillac convertible on display inside, but you won’t even miss it with the lush patio and yummy food. And while you can get lunch and dinner, too, we’re really here for the all-day breakfast, especially the French Custard Toast and the Smoked Salmon Benedict.

1801 NE Broadway St.
Online: cadillaccafepdx.com

Level Beer

The founders of this brewery, situated on an impressive 2-acre property, are parents themselves, and their family-friendly outdoor seating area proves it. Grab a burger, tacos, or falafel from the food carts, and then (for the adults) choose from a selection of beer brewed onsite. While there is a tasting room inside, we were truly impressed by the greenhouse beer garden that boasts plenty of outdoor space, games, and even a hop field and a dog run. There’s a rotating menu of food trucks—check the website to see what’s there on which days.

5211 NE 148th Ave.
Online: levelbeer.com

Tamale Boy Dekum

The Northeast branch of this food truck-turned-restaurant boasts a reasonably priced kids’ menu and delicious authentic food from Oaxaca and Northern Mexico. Bonus? They have an awesome outdoor patio. Go for brunch on the weekend and enjoy breakfast burritos and chilaquiles—although the tamales are really where it’s at.

1764 NE Dekum St.
Online: tamaleboy.com

¿Por Qué No? Taqueria

Who doesn’t love tacos? One of our favorite spots for the best tacos in town is this cool restaurant with two locations on Hawthorn and Mississippi that both offer patio dining. The Hawthorn location offers both covered (clutch for impromptu rain) and uncovered seating options. The kids will love the tacos and parents can indulge in incredible ceviche and spectacular margaritas. Keep an eye out on their Instagram page for the various fundraisers they often host!

3524 North Mississippi Ave.

4635 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Online: porquenotacos.square.site

Stormbreaker Brewing

Two locations, one in St. Johns and one on Mississippi, have patio dining options that include covered and heated seating, complete with cozy fire pits, so even on the colder evenings your crew will stay comfortable. You’ll find a traditional tap room menu of great burgers, sandwiches, fish ’n chips, and chicken tenders. Not to mention, their award-winning beer. If you book ahead, you can also try your hand at axe throwing. Sessions are for ages 9 and up, but the under-9s can spectate.

832 N. Beech St. and 8409 N Lombard St.
Online: stormbreakerbrewing.com

La Buca

This sweet neighborhood cafe serves up great Italian food with a friendly staff. Along with excellent service, you can expect outdoor heated seating set apart from the street with wide planter boxes. Kids will enjoy their own menu with pasta and veggie choices, and parents will enjoy the affordability—and the wine!

40 NE 28th Ave.
Online: labucaitaliancafe.com

Jam on Hawthorne

Get your breakfast fix at Jam, where the portions are huge and hearty. The kids’ menu features some very reasonable prices and fun options like scrambled eggs, lemon ricotta pancakes, and even vegan and gluten-free options for the kiddos. If you’re choosing from the adult menu, you’ll have staple breakfast fare like eggs and pancakes as well, plus wraps, comfort food, and tons of vegetarian and vegan options—and some stellar cocktail options. Enjoy your meal at the picnic tables covered in cute sun umbrellas, but make sure you step inside as well, as the restaurant is proud to be the largest non-gallery art space in the city. Art from local artists hangs on display, and it’s all available for purchase (100% of the price goes directly to the artist!).

2239 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Online: jamonhawthorne.com

Slappy Cakes

This one might be cheating—the seating is technically indoors but the entire wall opens up, so you’re safe from the elements but still breathing fresh outside air. We just had to include it for the fun build-your-own pancake experience! Slappy Cakes encourages visitors to play with their food, and is a must-visit if you have kids, or if you just want to feel like a kid for a bit. Take a seat, make your order… then have fun making your own pancakes right on your table’s built-in griddle. Plus, every bit of their all-day breakfast fare is made from scratch with fresh, unprocessed ingredients. While you’re here, check out the handcrafted cocktails and kid-friendly drinks. Come by at different times of the year to enjoy each season’s special flavors!

4246 SE Belmont St.
Online: slappycakes.com

Pioneer Courthouse Square

This urban park is sometimes called the city’s “living room,” providing a gathering space for Portland’s residents, and a beautiful place to hang out for a lunch out. The park is jam-packed with beautiful art and flowering plants (often merging the two in beautiful ways) and provides plenty of space to explore or sit and relax. Food trucks line the park, offering up a mix of Mexican food, veggie rice bowls, sushi burrito, and more. Plus, there are accessible bathrooms and internet access at the square, and lively events are frequently held here. Bring the whole fam and have a cozy day out!

715 SW Morrison St.
Online: thesquarepdx.org

Tin Shed Garden Cafe

Both kid- and pet-friendly, this charming garden cafe is the perfect place to enjoy an al-fresco meal with the whole family—fur-children, included. The cafe boasts an impressive kids’ menu, including fun options that the littles won’t get anywhere else, like tofu and grits, and a Babycino, a cup of steamed milk served with a shot of vanilla, almond, or hazelnut syrup so they can feel just like the grownups. The full menu is a treat, too, with locally sourced ingredients and only sustainably farmed and humanely raised meats on the menu—and the staff are able to accommodate dietary restrictions (nearly every menu item can be made for you gluten-free). Enjoy your meal on the picnic benches in the covered setup out front!

1438 NE Alberta St.
Online: tinshedgardencafe.com

Cully Central

This sweet eatery serves up authentic Lao cuisine, which means everything might be spicy to the uninitiated. But if you and the kids are no strangers to a bit of spice, it’s a must-visit on a warm day. Make sure to snag a picnic table outside and don’t miss the gorgeous photo-op of the vibrant wings mural. The Nam Khao rice plate—a crispy pork rice and lettuce wrap—comes highly recommended by visitors!

You don’t have to pack loads of toys or hundreds of diapers

Traveling with a small child can seem daunting, more work than staying home, and generally…not worth it. You have to cart this often-cranky person and their gear around while your plans of spending an afternoon relaxing on the beach take a back seat to naptimes and tantrums.

I get it. My husband and I spent over a year and a half traveling full-time to 20 countries with our toddler son and actually came to enjoy it after we adjusted our expectations a bit and slowed everything down. Here are some of our top tips for how to actually enjoy traveling with a toddler.

Manage your expectations

While we’re firm believers that you can successfully travel as a family without exclusively visiting theme parks and children’s museums for the next 18 years, you will need to manage your expectations. Pick a reasonable amount of activities per day (we like a morning and afternoon activity with time for nap/quiet time in between) and consider the rest a bonus. Visiting a museum in the morning? Opt for a more casual stroll around a neighborhood + a visit to a local playground in the afternoon. And you know this already, but life with a kid means things take approximately 50% more time than you estimate that they will, so if Google Maps tells you it will take 20 minutes to get somewhere, allow 30.

Be prepared, but not over-prepared

Most everything that’s truly a necessity can be purchased anywhere in the world. Pack enough that you’re not stressed, but not so much that you’re carting around anything more than the essentials. For us, that means tossing a few diapers into a tote, along with a water bottle, and a couple of toy cars. It can be fun finding other things that you need while on the go, for instance, trying a new local snack, or letting your kid pick out a small toy at a local toy shop.

Determine what’s important to you and focus on those details

Everyone has different travel styles and when you add kids to the mix, that expands exponentially.

Establish what matters most to you and plan that, and remain flexible on the rest. If space to decompress is important, book an Airbnb with a large living room or an outdoor space. If convenience is your number one, sacrifice space for location. If you hate having to make game-time decisions, pre-book a few museum slots. Spending time establishing and communicating your priorities (and potential stressors) will free up time to enjoy the trip when it comes around.

Don’t stress about the small stuff

Easier said than done, but if there’s one constant to traveling with children it is that things will go wrong. Stuff that happens at home will happen on the road. Tantrums, picky eating, bad moods—these will happen. Focus on the things that go smoothly and the memories you’re creating as a family. Attitude is everything.

Lean into the little things

It’s easy to get lost in planning all of the activities and museums, but don’t forget the extremely likely scenario that your child might be more interested in the gravel path outside the museum than the dinosaur fossils inside it. As frustrating as this may be, it can be helpful to view each component of your day as an opportunity for your child to find something they love. The public bus or metro ride to a destination could be as exciting as the destination itself, and that’s ok.

Don’t make too many sacrifices

This might seem counterintuitive, but if you’re thinking about traveling with a child, travel is probably something you enjoyed before you became a parent or caregiver. Sure…you have to travel differently now, but it’s possible to still do the things you enjoyed before your little one was even a twinkle in your eye. We like to strike a balance between catering to our son and inserting him into our plans. Contemporary art museums? Full of flashy exhibits that kids will love! Long train rides? Perfect for on-the-go naps and much-needed downtime. Need an adult beverage? Breweries are super-kid friendly and many have outside spaces for your little one to burn off some energy. Balancing some dedicated children’s activities with things you enjoy too is totally fine and will help you enjoy your time together.

Parents deserve to relax and unwind, and what better way to do it without a babysitter fee than by visiting family-friendly wineries in the DC area that welcome kids.

Hot summer days are made for creek stomping, exploring waterfalls and getting soaked at a splash park. What goes well with a long day of adventure? A glass of crisp wine! Because let’s be honest: What grownup doesn’t want to sip on a dry red or a smooth rose at the end of a solid day of parenting? However, when looking for family-friendly wineries, it’ll quickly become clear that not all vineyards welcome little guests. Meanwhile, others offer board games, crayons and coloring paper, and kid menus—and some offer goodies to fur babies as well! Scroll down for the best kid-friendly wineries to, well, un-wined after an action-packed day with the whole family.

The Winery at Bull Run

This winery is just a quick trip out of town, but once you set foot on the grounds you'll feel a world away from city life. Grab a glass or two and head inside the family-designated tent for a toasty toast! Take a walk as a family and explore the old homestead before your wine tasting; the pastoral setting has plenty of space for kiddos to roam.

Barrel Oak Winery

Long-cited as DC’s top family-friendly winery, Barrel Oak unfolds against the backdrop of the beautiful Virginia Piedmont countryside, just a hop and a skip (one hour) from the District. Owners Brian and Sharon work hard to create a community atmosphere by welcoming parents with kids, hikers, bikers, and travelers from the other side of the globe. And their love of dogs is evident throughout the place, from the paw prints on the menus, to their resident staff member, Birch. Children love the all-inclusive, pet-friendly atmosphere, while adults love the expansive patio views and whimsical décor. And then there’s the award-winning wines—24,000 gallons right on the property.
