If you have a dinosaur obsessed kid, then you need to keep reading. National Geographic today reports that Paleontologist and National Geographic Explorer, Dr. Nizar Ibrahim, has discovered unique swimming adaptations in a dinosaur. This is the first conclusive evidence that any dinosaur lived mostly in an aquatic habitat.

Spinosaurus

An international team of researchers, supported by the National Geographic Society, has reported the discovery of evidence that the Spinosaurus, the longest predatory dinosaur known, was aquatic, and used tail-propelled swimming locomotion to hunt for prey in a massive river system.

A kid-friendly version of this breaking news alert is available on National Geographic’s free digital hub to support families and educators during COVID-19.

You can find the new content, along with additional stories National Geographic Kids has put together for kids who love exploration and may be fascinated by dinosaurs here:

Target’s Adorable Dinosaur Planters Will Have You Roaring for Joy

If your little one is a budding paleontologist, you probably have a bunch of toy dinosaurs hanging around in your playroom. One dad from the UK took his son’s love of dinos to the next level. When purchasing a dinosaur sculpture for his 4-year-old, Andre Bisson found out his gift was larger than life.

Bisson’s son, Theo, really loves dinosaurs, especially Carnotaurs. When Bisson saw a local amusement park was getting rid of their dinosaur sculptures, he decided to surprise Theo with his very own pet dino.

Dino Dad

Bisson shares that his son had a rough start in life. “24 hours after he was born Theo was rushed to hospital, if that had been 36 hours, he wouldn’t have made it. After three years, he is better, so I went to the extreme and bought him a pet dino.”

When the shipping company tried to load the dinosaur, now known as Chaz, onto the truck, Bisson realized it was twice the size originally expected.

Dinosaur Sculpture

When Chaz finally arrived at the house, he had to be lowered into the garden using a crane. He just fits in the garden measuring 20 feet long and 7’9” high.

When Theo saw his new friend, he ran over to him and pulled on his chain. He immediately wanted to feed him and make sure that he felt at home.

We all know that kids who are obsessed with dinosaurs can get kind of intense when it comes to all things paleo (the subject, not the diet). Even though this intense interest may seem like a distraction, it’s actually beneficial for your child’s development. Here’s what science has to say about it.

Preschoolers and paleontology practically go hand-in-hand. Your kiddo might not remember where they put their left shoe, but they certainly know the names of every dino that has ever walked the Earth, like, ever. While children have all kinds of intense interests, dinosaurs are one of the most popular among the pre-K set—with it comes developmental bonuses.

photo: Eddie Kopp via Unsplash

In an interview with CNN, paleontologist Kenneth Lacovara talked about young children and their intense interest for all things dino: “I think for many of these children, that’s their first taste of mastery, of being an expert in something and having command of something their parent or coach or doctor doesn’t know.” Lacovara added, “It makes them feel powerful. Their parent may be able to name three or four dinosaurs and the kid can name 20, and the kid seems like a real authority.”

What does this mean for your pint-sized paleontologist? To start with, the seemingly outlandish obsession with dinosaurs isn’t a bad thing. It’s actually beneficial! So go ahead and encourage paleo play. And don’t worry too much if your kiddo’s dino crush starts wavering over time. It happens.

Whether your child has an “intense interest” in dinosaurs or is just a part-time fan, it’s all in good STEM fun. From building academic basics to encouraging exploration, STEM play can help your preschooler right now and for years to come.
