If you think googling ‘snow near me’ in Southern California is an oxymoron—think again! You don’t have to leave Southern California to play in real snow with these nearby winter wonderlands the whole family will enjoy

While planning your winter bucket list of activities in Los Angeles, you might be thinking about your favorite local holiday celebrations or which spot you should go to pick out your perfect Christmas tree. And while playing in Southern California snow doesn’t typically rank high on the list in this sunny region, thanks to some pre-winter storms, California mountains are covered in snow—making for some early openings for our local mountain resorts. Whether you’re a new or avid skier, a thrill-seeking snowboarder, into sledding or just want to make some snowballs making and throw them, this is the season to go have fun with the frozen stuff—even in SoCal.

1. Snow Play at Big Bear Mountain Resort

Just two hours away from DTLA (well, sans traffic), you'll find Big Bear Mountain Resort (BBMR) which is now open and has Los Angeles skiing down to a science thanks to loads of snowmaking taking place over the past few weeks. There you'll find a magic carpet ride that takes you to the top and you can choose one of three 300-foot tubing lanes. Make sure to reserve your spot in advance.

With the price of flights at an all-time high, it seems like taking a road trip is much better bet—budget-wise (at least slightly right?!). Thankfully SoCal has plenty of epic vacation destinations that are just a drive away and while you might be familiar with these popular destinations, have you heard about the must-see quirky stops to take along the way? From downright wacky to pretty darn cool, these roadside attractions turn a pit-stop into a wild good time.

EddieWorld

If you're heading out on the I-15 from SoCal towards the Las Vegas area, then a stop at EddieWorld is well worth it. Touted as California's largest gas station, you can fuel up and recharge with the lowest gas prices and 18 Tesla supercharging stations. There are also three fast-casual restaurants serving up fare ranging from gourmet burgers and unique fries to salads and sushi. Also don't miss, homemade ice cream and Peet's coffee for the parents and bags of candy for purchase.

Insider Tip: There are plenty of fresh, tasty vegan options available—and their bathrooms are notoriously clean!

Sunny Jim Cave

Located just 22 miles north of San Diego, here you can enter a bootlegger's tunnel through the historic Cave Store and follow it down through the sandstone cliffs and into a sea cave. Randy's Donuts

While Randy's plans worldwide doughnut domination, nothing beats stopping at the orginal. So the next time you're road-tripping through Los Angeles plan a pitstop off the 405 for a box of the now-iconic sweets.

Good to Know: The famed big donut that graces their roof is a California icon featured in plenty of TV shows and movies, like Arrested Development, Californication, and Iron Man 2. Their flagship location in Inglewood has been there for nearly 60 years and is home to the original giant 32-foot donut.

Drive-Thru Trees

If you find yourself driving to the California Redwoods for vacation, this is a must-do road trip adventure! There are three opportunities in the area where driving through a tree is actually encouraged! The drive-thru trees are giant redwoods with holes big enough for motorists to drive through. Shrine Tree in Myers Flat, Chandelier Tree in Leggett, and Klamath Tree in Klamath all offer the opportunity to take your car where it’s never been before (just remember to fold in your side-view mirrors).

Bubblegum Alley

It's true—this roadside attraction is in fact, an alley, about 70 feet long and 15 feet high, covered in thousands (maybe millions) of wads of chewed gum. The alley's history is debated, but it's been around since at least the early '70s and is usually full of people taking selfies or contributing their own piece of gum. The bubblegum graffiti is located in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo and can be described as one of the city's most popular, unofficial landmarks. So, feel free to extend your stop and pop into one of the many local shops or restaurants. There's even a classic sweet shop, SLO sweets, that sells, you guessed it, gumballs!

Pirate House, Newport Beach

When you’re driving down Marcus St. in Newport Beach, you really can’t miss this quirky gem on the corner of 35th and Marcus. Pizza Night Is Our Favorite Night. Here Are All the Best Pizza Spots in LA

Cue up the Jimmy Buffet as it’s time for an island getaway (without leaving the states). Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs has tons to offer families looking for a little relaxation time and it is the perfect home base for all your Palm Springs and Joshua Tree adventures. We checked it out and have all the intel on everything we loved about it.

Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs

1. The resort's retro design and upscale amenities are the perfect combo for families.
As soon as we arrived at Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs, we could feel the relaxing island vibe taking over (and we needed it after hours in the car with the kids). The mid-century building encircles an inner pool area that was soon to become our home base for the weekend. Families can enjoy snacks and a game of cards at the many sitting areas in the expansive lobby. Even pets are welcome!

2. Dining options are convenient (and kid-friendly).
The resort really takes into consideration the fact that families are likely to be on the go when visiting and they offer both sit-down and grab-and-go dining options. The on-site restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner service that you can enjoy in the restaurant, on the adjoining patio or in your room. The kid meals were large enough to satisfy the teens in our crew and the chicken sandwich was a family favorite.

We particularly appreciated Joe Merchant's Coffee and Provisions for quick breakfast eats, to-go sandwiches, coffees and pizzas. They also had snacks and alcoholic beverages available. Swing by for your coffee and egg sandwich, and grab a sandwich to bring with you for your Joshua Tree visit.

Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs

3. The resort's spa is a must-visit.
Be sure your visit includes some time at the St. Somewhere Spa. This expansive space will (almost) make you forget you've brought your kids along with you as you fully immerse yourself in its relaxing ambiance. Book a Swedish massage or mani/pedi and be sure to bring your swimsuit with you so that you can enjoy the hot tub and sauna afterward.

Kate Loweth

4. You'll want to spend all day (and night) by the pool.
Be sure your schedule allows for sufficient pool time because it's where the kids will want to hang, we know it. Lounge chairs, a fire pit, cornhole games and an outdoor bar surround the pool that's in the center of the property. You can order food to eat poolside and enjoy views of the San Jacinto Mountains while the kids enjoy the water. There's even a hot tub for post-hike relaxation.

5. Family-sized rooms with a view.
The property offers tons of room options for families of all sizes from the luxurious, two-level Jimmy Buffet suite to traditional hotel rooms. Request a room that faces the pool and you'll get a balcony or patio with outdoor space to enjoy your morning coffee. We enjoyed the Hemisphere suite with a separate dining area, mini-fridge, microwave and coffee maker that made breakfast time easy, even when some wanted to sleep in.

Kate Loweth

6. Nearby adventures are plentiful.
The resort's prime location on the main drag in Palm Springs makes for a great location when you want to check out all that Palm Springs has to offer. Our robust guide to visiting Palm Springs with kids has tons of ideas for what to do in the area like hopping aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, going on a windmill tour and stopping by the Cabazon Dinosaur Museum.

We spent a full day visiting Joshua Tree National Park and would definitely recommend it to families. About an hour's drive from the resort, Joshua Tree gives you a glimpse of another world full of weirdly shaped plants and massive rock formations. You'll want to make sure you have gassed up your car before you go as gas stations are few and far between near the park entrance. Bring food, water and sunscreen with you and do yourself a favor and pay your entrance fee online before you head over. You'll save yourself a major headache and avoid the line at the park entrance.

We entered the park at the south entrance near Cottonwood Springs and exited at the west entrance. This route led us to many of the park's top destinations like the Cholla Cactus Garden and Skull Rock. We particularly liked stopping at the White Tank Campground and hiking to Arch Rock. It was a super easy hike and there were tons of boulders for climbing.

Kate Loweth

The Living Desert is also about an hour from the resort and we had a great time visiting the animals, hiking the trails and even feeding the giraffes. Pro tip: save the giraffes for the end of your visit (they are located near the entrance) if you need a way to motivate your kids through the day. Little ones will love the carousel and you'll definitely want to make note of any animal encounters they have scheduled as they provide a great way to meet some of the animals up close. The brand-new Rhino Safari is located right near the giraffes and a great way to see these majestic creatures in action.

For a storied vacation full of history, charm and more pools you can shake a stick at, La Quinta Resort & Club is a must-visit for your next Palm Springs getaway. Set against the rugged Santa Rosa Mountains on 45-acres of lush landscape, we have the intel on all there is to do and eat at this desert spot just 120 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

Resort Overview

Andie Huber

Located in La Quinta (the town was named after the resort), La Quinta Resort & Club, was originally built and designed as desert hideaway in 1926 and offered Hollywood celebrities more privacy than adjacent Palm Springs.

And as you turn down the long driveway, you'll immediately see why. It feels as though you are transported to another era thanks to the blooming flowerbeds, layered against the Spanish Colonial Revival buildings and the looming mountains.

The lobby, thanks to a recent renovation, highlights the architecturally stunning dark wood beams and Mexican-tiled floors, lending a historical gravitas to this fun-filled vacation spot. And while the resort is vast, each area feels intimate and private—like your very own desert oasis.

Good to Know: The resort is pet-friendly too! No need to leave four-legged family members back in LA if you don't want.

La Quinta Resort & Club

The resort has 41 temperature-controlled pools on the property—yes, you read that right! There are 41 pools! Included in that number is a large, main pool that has lunch and drink service.

There is a dedicated pool in each courtyard, surrounded by a set of accommodations that is perfect for last-minute dips, evening swims, or if you don't feel like walking more than twenty feet to get your family swim game going.

On-Site Activities

Andie Huber

In addition to swimming, there are 23 tennis courts, six golf courses, and a fitness center for everyone in the family to work up a sweat. Or just go for a walk or jog on the spectacular grounds. If you do go for a walk, keep an eye out for plaques on the property that detail famous guests, like Frank Capra, who spent the winters at La Quinta and wrote the script for "It's a Wonderful Life" at the resort.

Make sure to swing by the spa and make an appointment for a mommy-to-be-massage ($170 for 50-minutes) or one of their signature massages like the Sacred Stone Massage ($235 for 80-minutes) that uses warm basalt stone combined with a Swedish massage.

Insider Tip: Plan to spend some extra time before and after your massage at the spa. The waiting rooms are so relaxing you might find yourself taking a nap before the massage even starts. There are also some gorgeous outdoor spots to hang, post-massage. And even better? You can order lunch, drinks, and snacks here too.

The Rooms

Andie Huber

The resort is made up of casitas, suites and villas which gives families flexibility for their stay—crucial if you plan to spend more than a couple days out in the desert. The suites are generously-sized and can easily accommodate a family of four. The sofa pulls out into a bed and is roomy enough for two kids to sleep there while you and your partner can claim the bed to yourselves.

All the rooms come with a fireplace in the room, but if you can, request a room with a patio that has an outdoor fireplace. That way you can hang outside while the kids sleep inside, and enjoy those desert, star-filled nights by a cozy fire.

Where to Eat

Andie Huber

There are lots of dining options, in addition to room service, at the resort.

For breakfast or a casual American-bistro style dinner, Twenty6 has plenty to offer everyone in the family. Both offer extensive kid's menus and are amenable to special requests for picky eaters. At breakfast you can choose buffet or you can order off the menu.

The main pool has a bar and lunch menu—perfect for eating poolside and keeping the kids properly fueled.

For dinner, make a reservation at Adobe Grill for the freshest, Mexican food that gives LA dining hot-spots a run for their money. And definitely splurge on the dulce de leche for dessert. We promise, you won't regret it.

Entertainment

Andie Huber

There is usually live music on the weekends and it's definitely a must-attend. The atmosphere is relaxing and festive and gives everyone an extra reason to lounge and linger on the lawn after dinner. It's exactly the type of event you want on a vacation—picture kids having fun, running around while the parents can relax and enjoy themselves. It truly was the cherry on top for this family-friendly getaway.

In the past, the resort has transformed itself into Bedford Falls in honor of the Frank Capra's famous script, "It's a Wonderful Life." Add to that fireside movies, cooking classes and more, the resort offers loads of entertainment options throughout the year. Make sure to check out their calendar when planning your next getaway.

Insider Tip: Loads of kids had scooters with them and zoomed their way around the various pathways on the resort. If you have room in the car, definitely pack yours.

Nearby Attractions

Andie Huber

If you haven't been to this side of town before, there are a ton of family-friendly activities close-by (and some that are even closer to La Quinta than Palm Springs).

First thing in the morning, head to The Living Desert (just 15 minutes away), or go visit the old town of La Quinta (2 minutes away), that is, if you can convince the kids to leave the pools. For more fun things to do with the kids, check out our comprehensive list of what to do in Palm Springs.

Insider Tip: On the property, is one of the best gift shops that we've ever seen. Between the clever books and cactus-inspired collectibles, make sure to stop here for unique, one-of-a-kind gifts and souvenirs. And don't forget to stop at Lollipops for their sweet treats.

Room rates start at $159 per night.

Does the thought of a trip to the snow with your munchkins send shivers up your spine? Our SoCal beach babes are often not equipped for a day in the white stuff.  Does anyone in your family really know how to put chains on the car? Not to mention that tiny tummies, windy roads, and long car trips are often a recipe for disaster.  But…if you have ever wished you could step outside into a winter wonderland for an hour or two of snow ball fights and then wiggle your nose like Samantha and find yourself back in 75 degree Southern California sunshine, your wish has been answered.  Almost. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway offers a fun and convenient way to take your little ones to see the snow.  Stay for minutes or the whole day: mom and dad will enjoy the stunning panorama views, while the kiddos will marvel at scaling the mountainside at a good clip, passing from desert to frozen tundra over the course of ten minutes.

To the Tundra
A two-hour drive on the 10 will take you to the tramway. Once at the top, you enter Southern California’s version of an Alpine Lodge.  The walk down to the snowy San Jacitinto park is a windy concrete pathway that can get icy.  Wear good shoes and take it slow.  A jogging stroller with rugged wheels might be a good choice if your tiny tot is still a little unsteady on his feet.  Once you make it down the path you will find yourself in a little slice of winter paradise.  Visitors are encouraged to bring sleds, discs, and snow shoes to take full advantage of the park.  You can get up to the minute weather info and buy advance tickets on the website: www.pstramway.com.

The Early Bird Gets the Empty Tram
The sooner you arrive, the easier it is to park.  As the lots close to the departure station fill up, cars are parked lower down the mountain and passengers are bussed up to the station.  Being on the first tram is ideal.  As it gets later in the day the lines for tickets and the tram get longer and longer.  Plus, an early morning tram may only have a few passengers on it making for a much more comfortable ride to the top. Trams depart every fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on crowds, beginning at 8:00am on weekends and 10:00am on weekdays.

Baby, It’s Cold!
Bundle up! It may be warm and sunny at the bottom, but the change in temperature at the top can be a drop of up to 40 degrees.  Ask other parents at school if they have snow gloves and gear you can borrow, or check local consignment shops.  Here’s a link for some of the best kid’s resale and consignment in the area: Growing Kids: 5 Great LA Resale Stores. Most of the cold weather gear is hardly used.  Remember, being in the snow with a cold, wet and cranky kiddo means nobody is having fun.

Mom, I’m Hungry
In the lodge there is a small café, The Pines, with snacks and pre-made sandwiches.  They sell hot cocoa (made from packet) that, after a few hours in the cold, tastes heavenly in spite of its origins.  There is also a more formal restaurant, The Peaks, in the lodge that even has a children’s menu.

Mini-Vacation Anyone?
You might want to make a weekend of it.  Who wouldn’t want to tell their friends at school on Monday how they lounged at the pool on Saturday and built a snowman on Sunday? There are tons of family-friendly places to stay in the area along with a bunch of neat things to do.  For more info on where to stay and what to do, check out, Kid Friendly Palm Springs. Make sure you go visit the giant Marilyn Monroe and give her toes a little tickle.  On the way home, a quick stop at Hadley’s for their famous date shake and a little shopping at the Desert Hills Premium Outlets makes a Palm Springs weekend a win for everybody.
