Nothing quite says winter like sipping on a cup of creamy hot chocolate, Portland parents

While Portland may not boast the snowy winters of the midwest, we can still get our winter sports on with the kids, whether we’re tubing on Mt. Hood, ice skating at Lloyd Center, or just finding a peaceful forested trail in the city to stretch our legs. And you know what pairs well with a day of winter adventuring? A rich and creamy cup of hot cocoa, of course. So if you’re wondering where to score the best cup in town, we’ve got options (including vegan hot cocoa). So get out there and make the most of winter’s cooler days. We’ve got your warm up right here.

Just like the Golden Gate Bridge and cable cars, there are desserts that make San Francisco uniquely special and memorable. It’s not surprising that such a food-loving city would have beloved local favorites; many of these sweet treats can only be found by making a visit to the city. Some of the desserts on our list have been part of San Francisco tradition for years, while others are recent newcomers eagerly embraced by foodies. Read on for the most iconic desserts of San Francisco.

Ghirardelli's Hot Fudge Sundae

Ghirardelli Hot Fudge by Lorraine P
Lorraine P via Yelp

When you imagine a classic ice cream sundae, you’re probably envisioning Ghirardelli’s famous sundae: vanilla ice cream, handmade hot fudge, tons of whipped cream and a cherry on top. Although there are several Ghirardelli stores around the city now, go to Ghirardelli Square for the full experience of eating an ice cream sundae in an old-fashioned ice cream parlor with gorgeous bay views just steps away.

Mr. Holmes Bakehouse Cruffin

Holmes Cruffin
Anita Chu

CLOSED as of 8/2021

The two main goals when going to Mr. Holmes Bakehouse are 1) get there early enough to snag a cruffin before they sell out and 2) take a victory photo holding the cruffin in front of their “I got baked in San Francisco” sign. Their cruffin, a croissant baked in the form of muffin, is a flaky, sugary sweet delight. They start selling them at 9a.m. so your best bet is to arrive a little before then.

Tartine Bakery's Banana Cream Tart

Tartine Banana Cream Tart
Anita Chu

Pretty much anything at one of San Francisco’s most famous bakeries is guaranteed to be delicious. But the banana cream tart has a devoted fanbase for good reason: it’s a fancy take on classic banana cream pie with banana pastry cream over a chocolate and caramel filled tart shell. Try it once and you’ll be back again.

B. Patisserie's Kouign Amann

B patisserie kouign

It’s a testament to chef Belinda Leong’s talents that she took a relatively unknown pastry called kouign amann and turned it into the hottest sweet in town. This supercharged cousin of the croissant is buttery, sugary addictiveness. B. Patisserie offers kouign amann every day and in special seasonal flavors throughout the year.

20th Century Cafe's Russian Honey Cake

Russian Honey Cake by Julia Y
Julia Y via Yelp

The charming 20th Century Café gives you a taste of Eastern European café culture, with an array of Austro-Hungarian classics like linzertorte, sachertorte, knishes and pirogies. What you’ll see most customers eating, though, is their signature Russian Honey Cake, a towering confection of delicate cake layers sandwiched with honey cream. It’s richer than it looks and utterly scrumptious.

Standing in the ever-present line at Bi-Rite Creamery and then triumphantly walking with your ice cream cone to nearby Dolores Park is a time-honored San Francisco ritual. Dandelion Chocolate's S'more

Dandelion Smore by Lisa I
Lisa I via Yelp

Dandelion Chocolate’s beautiful, modern pastries are a perfect showcase for their bean-to-bar chocolate. It’s an ideal accompaniment for their hot chocolate or coffee.

Golden Gate Bakery's Egg Custard Tarts

Egg Custard Tarts by Ann S
Ann S via Yelp

Temporarily closed as of 8/2021

Be warned: lines regularly form outside Golden Gate Bakery when a fresh batch of egg custard tarts is about to come out of the ovens. They are worth the wait. Golden Gate Bakery has perfected this traditional Hong Kong pastry of creamy, eggy, golden yellow custard in a flaky pastry shell. Check before going as they sometimes close unexpectedly for the day or for vacation.

Zanze's Cheesecake

Zanzes Cheesecake by Liv A
Liv A via Yelp

Sam Zanze only sells one item in his shop and he’s been selling it for almost 40 years, which tells you all you need to know about how good his cheesecake is. Its very soft, almost soufflé like texture is its claim to fame. Your best bet is to call ahead to make sure they are open and to reserve a cheesecake for pickup—they’re that popular. Once you’ve tried it though, you’ll hope he never closes shop.

Bob's Donuts Giant Donut

A girl bites into a giant chocolate sprinkle donut
Ciara Lene G via Yelp

Donuts may be practically a dime a dozen in SF, but a donut bigger than your hand is a true rarity. A giant (almost 10″ across) donut covered in glaze and sprinkles may be your kid’s wildest sugar-filled dreams come true. Although Bob’s Donuts has a standing challenge to finish a giant donut in three minutes for immortalization in their Hall of Fame, it’s probably a more reasonable strategy to take the donut home and let the kids enjoy it slowly over the week.

“BoCoCa” — AKA, the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens — has long attracted a French-speaking and French-loving population, likely influenced by (among other things) the dual language program at area school P.S. 58. In the past year, a host of new French services and businesses have joined the BoCoCa pioneers, making this Brooklyn spot feel like a far-flung arrondissement of Paris. Click through to see how resident and visiting families can sample its joie de vivre!

For Patisserie, un Café et Petit Dèjuner (And Perhaps the Best Baguette in the City): Maison Kayser

Famed Parisian baker Eric Kayser has crossed the river and opened an outpost of his authentic artisanal boulangerie in the heart of downtown Brooklyn on Court Street, mere steps from Borough Hall. (Fun fact: a  boulangerie is an establishment where the bread and other baked goods are mixed and baked on-site all day long, which is, in fact, the case here.) There are lots of ways to enjoy this new addition to the area: sample the French pastries displayed in cases at the front of the restaurant, eat traditional French savory fare while watching bakers do their thing on the other side of a glass wall, or grab a baguette to go. (There's also a barista who can whip up a cafe au lait and more for you and grab and go options, too.)

Stollen … at Dinkel’s
The only change that’s been made to the stollen at Dinkel’s, which has been a bestseller since the bakery first opened in the 1920s, is swapping lard for butter in the recipe. This holiday season they will be baking 600 pounds of the German cake each day. Kids will love getting their hands messy and white as snow from the powdered sugar that coats the outside of this fruity and nutty dough kept moist with buttercream.

Pfeffernusse Cookies … at Weber’s Bakery
This traditional holiday cookie is popular with families in Germany, Denmark and The Netherlands and is part of the St. Nicholas Day (Dec. 6) celebration. While “nusse” means “nuts” in German, the cookies don’t usually have nuts but are spice cookies (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg) dusted with powdered sugar and we have yet to meet a kid who doesn’t love powdered sugar!

Try the sweet and spicy gingersnap cookies and buttery shortbread cookies rolled in festive red or green sugar or dipped in chocolate. Don’t forget the Sno-ball pecan cookies rolled in powdered sugar, which will melt in your mouth. Leaving these cookies out for Santa will be sure to put him in a giving spirit.

Bûche de Noël … at Toni Patisserie
Little ones will be delighted to discover that this Yule log or bûche de Noël tastes not of wood, but rich, creamy chocolate. A chocolate-covered vanilla roll is filled with chocolate mousse and the bark is, you guessed it, more chocolate ganache. Meringue mushrooms are a fitting garnish for this cake, and if you chop off the end, the swirl of the sweet roulade inside will resemble a chopped off tree branch.

Pie – Any Pie … at Hoosier Mama
There is not one bad pie on the Hoosier Mama menu. Want to go traditional with a twist this holiday season? Try the Pear Apple Cranberry with Pecan Crumble (like autumn in your mouth). Have a chocoholic in your family? Head straight for the chocolate chess pie that is like a brownie and pie mash up. For the holidays, Hoosier Mama only bakes what they can store so once their order slots are full, that’s it – and the number of chocolate chess pies is limited!

Gianduja Tart … at Patisserie Coralie
Anyone who likes Nutella will go nuts (pun intended) over Pastry Chef Manuel Bouillet’s gianduja tart. The young Frenchman makes his own hazelnut and milk chocolate ganache and almond cream for filling the tart, then tops it with light milk chocolate cream and milk chocolate sheets. He makes smaller individual tarts at the shop each day, but for the holidays, you’ll want to share with your whole family.

Trifle … at Pleasant House Bakery
For a taste of traditional British holidays, head south to Bridgeport to Pleasant House Bakery and introduce your kids to a British favorite with trifle. Pleasant House’s seasonal trifle combines custard, fruit, sponge cake and every kid’s favorite – whipped cream. Make a meal of it with one of Pleasant House’s famous meat pies and wash it all down with a house made soda (the ginger ale should not be missed) or a spot of tea.

Pecan Pie … at Labriola
Pecan pies are perhaps the sweetest of them all, and this Southern classic is sure to be a hit at your holiday party. European butter makes for a super flakey crust and bourbon vanilla bean paste holds the crunchy pecans together. Warm it in the oven and top it with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, because all pie is better à la mode.

Florentines … at Tag’s Bakery
For almost 50 years, Tag’s Bakery has tried to keep up with the demand for their delicious Florentines. While many people think of Florentines are traditionally an Italian treat, Tag’s recipe comes from Vienna. No matter where it originated, Tag’s has definitely perfected this holiday cookie. This treat combines honey, butter, sugar and almonds and then coats the bottom of that deliciousness with chocolate to turn it into holiday cookie awesomeness.

Here at Red Tricycle NY, we’re always excited to spread the word about new kid-friendly cafés and restaurants. That’s why we were especially jazzed when we heard of a new cozy outpost from the brains behind Ditmas Park area parent favorite (and Red Tricycle Totally Awesome Award winner) Lark. Just steps from Prospect Park, ELK is serving up food and drink fireside and is home to an outdoor space just waiting for the spring thaw.

Where & What

Located in Brooklyn neighborhood Windsor Terrace on Prospect Park Southwest (in the former home of bike shop/café Juice Pedelar), ELK offers a small but tasty menu of sandwiches and snacks that caters to the palates of both kids and adults. Owner Kari Browne has recruited beloved local gourmet food shop Brancaccio’s to create a sandwich selection exclusive to ELK (ham and fontina, smoked salmon with onion and capers, and roasted eggplant among them), while other Brooklyn faves supply sweets and baked goods.

Sweets & Sips

You’ll find pies from Gowanus’ Four & Twenty Blackbirds; pastry from Colson Patisserie in Park Slope; Ovenly of Greenpoint’s gluten-free baked goods and Megpie’s artisan tarts. Wash it all down with Stumptown coffee, a hot chocolate or one of the café’s smoothies. (Plans to offer beer and wine are in the works, too.)

For the Kids

Like its cousin Lark, ELK hosts kid-friendly happenings. Currently, Lucy Kalantari hosts a ukulele singalong on Thursdays ($5 suggested donation), but space inside the café is limited, so programming for younger patrons won’t kick into high gear until warm weather returns. Come April, a large outdoor space will be outfitted with umbrella tables and more, and ELK’s seating area will quadruple in size.

In addition to providing some outside crawling space for little ones, Browne plans to convert the property’s former bike shed (located at the far end of the lot) into a playhouse. Outdoor activities for kids ages two and up will range from story times to singalongs to kiddie science classes.

When we dropped by on a snowy weekend day, a cup of hot chocolate by the fire did the trick before we headed back out into the cold. Come spring and summer, Browne hopes to fuel park-bound visitors with food and drink, whether they choose to stay and relax a bit or grab and go.

If your kids wish you were one of the 30 percent of NYC households that owns at least one cat (statistic courtesy of the American Veterinary Medical Association), they now have an easy way to enjoy kitty time: Meow Parlour, the new “cuddle a kitty” cat cafe that just opened on the Lower East Side.

The Cat Cafe Concept

Modeled on cat cafes popular in Japan (where small apartments and a pet-averse culture make it difficult to own a feline), South Korea and Taiwan, this is an animal lover’s dreamland – perfect for kids who want a kitty but can’t have one. Whether you’re a cat free household due to allergy, your apartment building’s “no pet” rule, or a simple lack of interest on your part, Meow Parlour should cure your kid’s cat wish, at least for a little while.

What You’ll Find Inside

The Meow Parlour boasts 12 free-roaming cats, from kitten to mature adult. Some are outgoing, some just-friendly-enough, others timid. To spend time with all of them, you rent access to the space, dropping by a 30-minute visit or staying for up to 5 hours. Prices start at $4 per person per half-hour. The number of guests is limited to 10 at a time. Not into cats yourself? Let your kid do the cuddling while you take advantage of complimentary Wi-Fi and a moment to use your laptop without your kid asking for attention.

Because of health department regulations, no food is made or sold within the cat café, though you can bring in food that you’ve purchased at the Meow Parlour Patisserie (owned by the Meow Parlour owners), just a few steps away. Macarons, doughnuts, pastries, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and other pastry house treats are available. Everything on the Patisserie menu is seriously amazing: The owners are pastry chefs who met in culinary school; they first opened a pastry shop together before branching into the world of pet parlours.

How Can You Get Cat Cuddle Time?

Visitations must be booked ahead of time and we hear the slots for older kids and adults are filled through February. Jump onto the online scheduling page to reserve your day and time for the future now. The Meow Parlour has extensive rules about who can visit the Parlour, how many people can come as a group, hand sanitation, how to behave around sleeping cats, which animals are to be left alone and even visitor behavior within the space. Be sure to read the rules online before submitting your booking. And whatever you do, do not bring in a person who you haven’t registered beforehand: The Meow Parlour is very strict about such things and one unregistered person is enough to get the entire group turned away.

Meow Parlour’s main hours are for guests ages 10 through adult. Younger visitors are allowed only during specially-designated times on Mon., Tues. and Thurs., from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Note: Meow Parlour is very strict about this, so don’t try to sneak an underage sibling in with your older children during main hours. Further, be prepared to sign a release on all kids you bring into Meow Parlour.

All of that being said, don’t let the fussy rules scare you away. The staff is friendly and well meaning and wonderful at showing the kids how to treat cats with respect and love. Meow Parlour is a fun, easy way to introduce your kids to cats if you don’t have pets at home. Gift certificates are available, if you want to share the love with other cat-crazy kids or adults.

What Happens if You Fall in Love?

Should all this time in the Meow Parlour lead you to want a fabulous feline of your own, you’re in luck: All animals are up for adoption through KittyKind, an all-volunteer rescue group; visiting over several days lets you and your family get to know a particular animal before committing. As Meow Parlour mascots leave for forever homes of their own, KittyKind provides new cats for Meow Parlour guests to spend time with.
