You don’t need an extreme home makeover, or even the help of a design pro to give your home an easy upgrade. From fresh flowers to perfectly placed candles to an expert stack of books, we bring you six ideas that you can execute today, probably with things you already have in your home.

Fresh Flowers on the Table

Constantin Panagopoulos

This is a classic, for a good reason. A vase full of flowers is sure to brighten up any space, and the dining room table is always a winner. But not all arrangements are created equal. For a dining table where people will want to look at one another, low and wide arrangements work best. A safe rule is to cut down bouquets from their original length. It will keep your blooms fresher, plus low arrangements are more modern than the "long-stemmed roses" of days past.

Rearrange the Furniture & Decor

iStock

If your space is feeling a little stale, consider rearranging your furniture, swapping area rugs or moving some of the home decor you already own. You'll be amazing at what a difference it makes.

Candles in the Bath

Maddi Bazzocco via Unsplash

Dirty tub? Grime disappears in the dark! Whether it's bath time or you are expecting dinner guests any moment, flip off the lights and fill the bathroom with enough candles that no one will ever need to reach for the switch. The combo of candles, glossy tile and mirrors will turn this humble room into a glittering little getaway in no time. Bonus: scented candles will fill the small space with sweet smells.

Stack Your Coolest Books on the Coffee Table

Hayrullah Gozcu via Unsplash

Even the most well-designed house can suffer from a cluttered coffee table. But a quick and easy clean up can make your living room party ready in minutes. First, get rid of all of the "real life" stuff like remotes, tattered magazines and drinking glasses. Once you have a clean slate, handpick three to five of your prettiest hardcover books (take a peek under the dust jackets to see if anything special is hidden underneath), and make a stack. Add a pretty bowl filled with olives, a selection of your best coasters, and you are guest-ready.

Show Off Your Produce in the Kitchen

Jen Siska

The most eye-popping colors and design comes from nature, and we are betting your fridge or pantry is filled to the brim with pretty stuff. Same as the coffee table makeover, clean the counters of all clutter, then set out a few pretty bowls. Lemons, eggplants, apples, pears, avocados—all make for the perfect decoration when displayed thoughtfully. But remember, these styling props are for eating, so never deny a hungry visitor to spare your lovely setup!

Toss a Tapestry in the Bedroom

Spacejoy via Unsplash

Duvets are pricey, and picking one to commit to can lead most to a mellow neutral. But to easily spice things up in the bedroom, collect a few tapestries or oversized patterned blankets. Hang them over sofa arms, on the backs of chairs or spread them out over the bed for a quick and dramatic change. If you're feeling crafty, hang on from the ceiling above the bed or on the wall for a temporary headboard.

Use a Patterned Wicker Basket Instead of a Plastic Laundry Basket

Even though Starbucks’ Mocha Swirl Cold Cup Tumbler isn’t exactly a new addition to the coffee giant’s line of reusable products, it’s going viral in a major way. With plenty of Instagram action, this tortoiseshell patterned pick is sold out just about everywhere!

As if the color-changing and spiky black matte tumblers weren’t enough, the glossy torti color is a must-have for the fall. With golden browns and orange-ish hues, this option is pure autumn awesomeness.

Sadly, as of now Amazon is listing the 16-ounce cup as currently unavailable. While Amazon doesn’t have the 24-ounce size in stock, you can still purchase it from a third-party seller.

The acrylic cold cup double wall tumbler won’t hold your hot PSL, but if you’re into the new Pumpkin Cold Brew, this pick will more than just do!

In yet another standout collab, Vans is introducing a new Harry Potter-themed line. While there’s no word on the release date, fans of both the iconic footwear brand and the “wizarding world” are getting ready to rejoice.

This isn’t exactly the first time the fashionable footwear brand has created or collaborated on a themed line. Following in the footsteps (yes, pun totally intended) of collections that feature fave Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse and Winnie Pooh and music legend David Bowie, the new line is a sure hit.

So what do we know about this majorly magical new collab? As of now, not much. Vans recently tweeted, “Something magical is coming,” along with a brief patterned video clip in Potter-themed colors. But that was it. No pics of the shoes or additional info.

The brand also recently added a Harry Potter Vans section to its website, featuring the four Hogwarts houses (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff—for the muggles out there). The specific mention of each house may mean the brand has plans to release four separate sneaker styles, one for each. But without a debut date, we’ll all just have to wait for what the website says is a, “magical collection of footwear, apparel and accessories for witches, wizards and muggles alike.”

14 Stylish Easter Dresses for Girls

When it comes to D-I-Y projects with your kidlet, you’re more like D-I-not-so-much. But with these super cute, teeny tiny crafts, you can build fabu furniture with the best of them. Whether you use these pieces to celebrate fancy mouse day, mix them in with your already existing dollhouse furniture, or use them to furnish Emmet’s swanky LEGO apartment, you and your crew will have a blast making each one. Read on to find out how.

photo: Little Irish House’s Facebook

1. Fabricate a posh bed using an empty Altoid tin and felt or fabric scraps to make it cozy. Simply glue a comfy lining to the bottom of the box to keep your critters warm to start. Then stuff a sweet hand-sewn pillow with cotton balls or batting. Finish it off with a fabric scrap turned blanket perfect for tucking in your tiny friend. The best part? Your mini me can close it up and take it anywhere his little heart desires for instant playtime.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

2. Build a dresser that really stacks up. A package of matchboxes, a glue gun and your favorite patterned scrapbooking paper is all you need to make this pint-sized staple. Empty the boxes before gluing three on top of each other. When they’ve dried cover the whole shebang with stylish paper. Your sidekick will totally dig the working drawers that can be filled with petit treasures.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

3. Light up the room with this for-decoration only standing lamp. We turned the mini-est cupcake liners you can find upside down, and then balanced them on a toothpick, using a dab of play dough to hold everything in place. Fashion the bottom out of an egg carton or even mold a round base using clay. It’s almost too easy!

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

4. Make a seat for your fancy friend using three supplies you’re sure to have on hand: craft sticks, an egg carton and a bottle cap. Start by painting the egg carton and craft sticks to match your mouse’s house décor. Then glue them together once they’ve dried. Finish it off with a bottle cap turned cushion, so tiny friends know just where to make themselves at home.

Crafting and outdoor exploration come together with this project—learn how to build a boat that floats and sails. The best part? You’ll only need to buy a couple of supplies because the main part of this barge is made from sticks that you find outside. Read on for the step-by-step instructions and you’ll soon have a ship to sail the high seas (or slow streams).

What You’ll Need

1 piece of paper (patterned scrapbook paper is nice, but plain construction paper also works)

2 craft sticks

string or twine

scissors

hot glue gun

glue stick

14 sticks in similar sizes (5-6 inches long works well)

How to Make the Boat

1. Start by wrapping 12 the sticks together with your twine. We used Kid Made Modern Craft Twine (target.com, $9.99) to add a pop of color, but white string would also work just fine. Tie one end of the twine to the end of one stick and wrap the string around a few more times, then move on to the next stick. Wrap the twine around that stick a few times and then use the same piece of twine to wrap the third stick and so on and so on until 12 of your sticks are connected. (You’ll use two elsewhere.) Don’t worry too much about how many times you loop around or how perfect your wrapping is. Knot off the twine on the last stick. Then, do the same thing on the opposite side of your sticks.

2. Wrap two sticks onto the bottom. Now add two more sticks, one on each end of your boat, to the bottom of your group of sticks. Again, tie a knot on one end of the stick then weave your twine in and out of the connected sticks, looping the twine around each stick and then around the stick on the bottom. Repeat for the second stick.

3. Cut 2 triangles out of your paper. Ours measured 5-inches along the side and bottom, but you may want to adjust based on the length of your sticks. We used Kid Made Modern Print Palooza patterned paper (target.com, $7.99 for 150 sheets). However, if you have plain construction paper, ask your child to decorate it with stickers, crayons, markers, or any other way you like.

4. Add the craft sticks as your mast. Line up the craft sticks along the edge of the triangle to create your mast. Use a hot glue to secure the craft sticks.

5. Glue the triangles together. Ask your child to cover the two triangles with glue, using the glue stick. Then, press them together to complete your sail.

6. Connect the sail to the raft. Slip the craft stick in between two of the sticks in the middle of your boat. Use a piece of twine to wrap around the craft stick and around the two middle sticks until it feels fairly secure. To give it extra support, add hot glue all around the area where the craft stick and twigs come together.

7. Sail your boat. Once the glue has cooled and dried, your craft is ready for its first voyage. Fill a baby pool or other vessel (even the bath tub!) with water and watch your homemade schooner float.

8. Create some wind. Want to get your boat moving faster? Use a straw to blow it across the water.

9. Take it to the park. For further experimentation, we took our model to the park so it could sail in a real stream. Even after several sails and a few capsizes, our sailboat has held up.

Happy sailing!

Project inspired by Minieco’s handmade boats.

Even though school is winding down, these cool new backpacks from LEGO are too awesome to not spread the word. Not only are they highly functional, they are eco-friendly, too! So if you’ve got a serious brick-o-phile in your household, read on about the latest gear you won’t want to miss.

What It Is

For more than ten years LEGO Bags have partnered with Carry Gear Solutions to make safe, practical bags for kids. Chances are you already have one of their cool storage solutions. New this year, the LEGO Eco backpacks and soft-sided lunch boxes take the love of LEGO and being green to a whole new level. Not only will you find amazing designs (like packs that look like giant bricks) every bag is made from recycled plastic water bottles. Eight for a backpack and four for a lunchbox, and each bag comes with a tag that illustrates the point.

Styles & Styles

There’s one for all tastes: because LEGO lovers come in wide range of ages, there are plenty of styles to chose from. You’ll find NINJAGO and NEXO Knights; clever brick-patterned fabric styles; and—our favorite—the giant LEGO brick pack that has two outside pockets, and plenty of room for all the gear kids tote around all day, along with the coordinating lunch box.

Bells & Whistles

All the bags are well-thought out with kiddos in mind. They feature places to write your kiddo’s name, stash pockets, reflective fabric strips on the padded shoulder straps, and the lining even has its own brick pattern. The bags are big enough to hold everything without being too big for the kids. Backpacks range from $25-$50 and lunch boxes $16-$25.
