Grammy-nominated performer Elle King is pregnant! The singer and fiance Dan Tooker recently revealed their baby news on Instagram and in a PEOPLE exclusive.

The road to the couple’s soon-to-be baby joy hasn’t been easy. King, who has polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), struggled with infertility and pregnancy loss.

King opened up about her fertility issues and subsequent pregnancy losses in PEOPLE saying, “It’s such a major thing that so many people go through, but it’s so secretive—like you have to go through it alone.” The singer added, “Nobody talks about it. It’s like you’re supposed to feel shame; like you’re not supposed to tell people before 12 weeks, because if you lose it, it’s going to be embarrassing for you and you don’t want other people to get their hopes up.”

The couple found out about King’s pregnancy on Christmas, but only recently announced the news publicly. King started her IG announcement with, “Well, we did something! Me and @tattooker made a little human!”

She went on to add, “We are very excited to share the news that we are pregnant. This news comes with a great deal of fear, and I hope that all mothers-to-be, in whatever sense that may be, know that I am trying to be very sensitive. You see, this miracle baby comes after two very big losses. It’s a terrifying and extremely painful experience for everyone. But the sun always rises, and I never really let go to let the universe decide when I was ready. I remember every pregnancy announcement felt like a dagger to me. So I want to be very delicate and say to YOU! That soon to be mom, who’s maybe had a loss, or has been struggling with fertility, I’m telling you, our babies come. And I love you.”

King continued with a shout out to other women who have gone through similar struggles, “What women go through on this journey make us nothing less than WARRIORS. So thank you for your prayers and love for our high risk pregnancy!”

Congrats go out to King and Tooker on their beautiful baby news!

Bette Midler isn’t just an actress, she’s an author, too. The renowned performer is getting ready to drop a brand new children’s book––and she’s reading the audio version!

The Tale of the Mandarin Duck goes on sale Feb. 16 and features an afterword by photographer Michiko Kakutani. Midler was inspired to write the modern fable based on inspiration from a mandarin duck that appeared in Central Park in 2018, and it celebrates the connections people make with each other.

Midler is a conservationist, founder of the New York Restoration Project and participates in Two-Thirds for the Birds, a project that helps revive bird populations. She shares that “Reading the book out loud was a challenge for me, because I’m used to being loud in big spaces, and this is a relatively intimate story. I didn’t want to scare the kids by yelling at them. At the same time, it’s a New York Story, and New York is LOUD….!”

You can shop the new book on Amazon starting Feb. 16 for $18.99.

The Broadway League announced that Broadway performances in New York City will be suspended through the remainder of 2020 due to COVID-19. They released updated information regarding performance cancellations and ticketing. Broadway theaters are now offering refunds and exchanges for tickets purchased for all performances through Jan. 3, 2021.

Broadway

While continuing to work with city and state officials along with leaders in science, technology and medicine The Broadway league is trying to formulate the best plan to restart the industry. Some of the logistics being reviewed include screening and testing, cleaning and sanitizing, wayfinding in theaters, backstage protocol and much more.

Returning productions are currently projected to resume performances over a series of rolling dates in early 2021. Tickets for performances for next winter and spring are expected to go on sale in the coming weeks. For regular updates on ticket sales, individual show announcements, performance dates, and more, please check Broadway.org for information as it becomes available.

“The Broadway experience can be deeply personal but it is also, crucially, communal,” said Chairman of the Board of The Broadway League Thomas Schumacher.  “The alchemy of 1000 strangers bonding into a single audience fueling each performer on stage and behind the scenes will be possible again when Broadway theatres can safely host full houses.  Every single member of our community is eager to get back to work sharing stories that inspire our audience through the transformative power of a shared live experience.  The safety of our cast, crew, orchestra and audience is our highest priority and we look forward to returning to our stages only when it’s safe to do so. One thing is for sure, when we return we will be stronger and more needed than ever.”

“Our membership is working closely with the theatrical unions and in concert with key experts and some of the greatest minds inside and outside of the industry to explore protocols for all aspects of reopening. We are focused on identifying and implementing necessary measures that will enable us to resume performances safely for Broadway audiences and employees,” said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League. “We are determined to bring back the people who rely on this industry for their livelihood, and to welcome back all those who love this vital part of New York City, as soon as it is safe to do so.  As so many of us in the Broadway community have been saying during this time – We’ll be back, and we have so many more stories to tell.”

Those holding tickets for performances through Jan. 3, 2021 will receive an e-mail from their point of purchase with detailed information regarding refund and exchange options. Any customers holding tickets through Jan. 3, 2021 that have not received an e-mail by Jul. 13 are advised to contact their point of purchase for assistance after this date.

Laura Benanti Helps Theater Kids After Musicals Were Canceled Due to Coronavirus

Music is everywhere! It affects all of us, of all ages, in so many different ways. We all experience music every day in our lives. From the music on the television in cartoons, commercials, series to movies, and much more, we all hear music countless times daily, including the car, our computers, on our phones, in stores, malls, restaurants, etc. We all engage in music in different ways.

The association with music is never-ending, ageless and timeless. There are endless music styles and songs for different countries, races, cultures, holidays, ages, organizations, sports, companies, religions, etc. Simply stated, people cannot get enough music that creates and expresses a myriad of emotions.

Harnessing the Power of Music

The benefits of music are astounding and far-reaching. Music can also help build and sustain an important relationship between parents and children. It has been proven to offer therapeutic benefits and even aid in brain function and language development as well. It is a big part of human emotional expression and is beneficial throughout our entire lives!

While listening to music offers countless benefits, singing is perhaps even more powerful. Countless online surveys show the following

  • Singing strengthens the immune system.
  • Singing is a workout.
  • Singing improves your posture.
  • Singing helps with sleep.
  • Singing is a natural anti-depressant.
  • Singing lowers stress levels.
  • Singing improves mental alertness.
  • Singing can widen your circle of friends.

Music makes everything more fun no matter what your age is. It lightens the heart. It creates a sense of togetherness. It doesn’t matter how you engage with music. It’s a part of who we all are.

Back to Basics

I have loved music my entire life. I can remember singing harmony with my teacher in third grade. I played piano and guitar in church throughout grade school. I have been lucky enough to have traveled the world because of music and have been fine-tuning my writing skills and am proud to say I have finished my album (April & the Velvet Room—I am) with some of the best musicians in the business. I also just recorded my first Christmas song that has been an interesting journey with music—and because I love it I keep I will eternally be working on my singing skills, writing skills. I even have a beautiful cello that I hope to play well someday!

How do YOU harness your POWER through music?

There are so many different types of philanthropic efforts children can and should participate in, and with Thanksgiving right around the corner, now is the perfect time to let your kids know about the importance of giving. It’s a good practice for the mind, body, and soul! Philanthropic efforts aid children in developing their social and emotional skills such as inclusivity, compassion, gratitude, empathy, and acceptance.

A child’s world is naturally very small. They’re most familiar and comfortable with what they know, which is usually reflected in their own immediate families. Broadening their understanding of the world is crucial to creating, what we call at The Little Gym, Citizen Kids. Citizen Kids are well-rounded children who can appreciate the differences they see in others and learn to contribute to the world in a positive way.

Developing a philanthropic mindset and instilling a service heart in children begins at home, with their parents and loved ones. Children are influenced not only by the words of their loved ones but even more so, their actions. Volunteering as a family is a fun way to spend quality time together and to show them how far kindness and compassion can reach. And kindness is contagious!

Here are some ideas to get you and your family started!

For Children 3 Years or Older

1. Build homeless packs and have them in your car. In a large Ziploc baggie include small personal hygiene products, feminine products, socks, granola bars, fruit snacks, and a bandana. As a family, you can make it a monthly activity to put these together and have them on hand to pass out to the homeless in your community when the opportunity arises. It showcases thoughtfulness and kindness to your child. Simply roll down your window and hand them out, no need to get out of the car.

2. Set-up a lemonade or popsicle stand to raise donations for a children’s charity or not-for-profit that you and your children can connect with. There are many local organizations right in your backyard that need your support, as well as, more widespread organizations across the country.

3. Get moving with your children for a good cause! There are awareness walks all around the United States that you and your family can get involved in. Choose one, raise the money and walk as a family in support of a local or regional non-for-profit. Whichever walk you choose, be sure to educate your children on the “why” this is so important. You can even make the walk a “family tradition” of sorts!

4. Organize a “Travel Bag Drive” in your driveway! Encourage your friends and neighbors to donate new or gently used backpacks, duffle bags, etc. to a box on your front porch and donate them to your local CASA organization. Court Appointed Special Advocates is a national association in the United States that supports and promotes court-appointed advocates for abused or neglected children in order to provide children with a safe and healthy environment in permanent homes. These children are often only given a black trash bags to carry the few personal items they have. By collecting these bags and donating them, you are providing a child with a sense of identity in a time of difficulty. Allow your children to write notes or draw pictures and place them in the bags as an additional act of kindness.

5. Create “self-appointed” Park Protector badges! When you take your kids to the park, have them wear their badge and spend the first 10 minutes combing the park for trash. Simply make it part of your park routine! This really showcases how “we all play a part” in protecting our planet and hopefully developing a life-long respect for mother nature!

For 5 Years Old or Older

1. Got a young performer on your hands who is looking for an audience?! Why not reach out to a local nursing home or assisted living center to see if they’d be interested in “showcasing” your child’s talents. What a beautiful way to spread positivity and joy to others. If you don’t have, or aren’t a performer yourself, you could simply volunteer to stop in and play board games or simply listen to their stories. This is a great way to expose your younger children to the older population and showcasing that each person, no matter age, can develop positive and respectful relationships. This is an important service opportunity that can bring light and joy to the residents of these communities.

2. Create a “Family Service Calendar”  where you choose one service opportunity per month for you and your family. Don’t overwhelm yourself with feeling like you have to do grandiose projects each and every month. Try picking 4 months out of the year for the bigger ideas and then sprinkle the smaller ones into the remaining months.

Remember, no act of service is ever too small and it will only further develop your bond with your children and their social and emotional intelligence, leading to a well-rounded “Citizen Kid.”

There’s a new Fairy Godmother in town! Actor Billy Porter recently announced that he’ll play the role in Sony’s soon-to-be live-action remake of Cinderella.

Over the weekend Porter confirmed the report during a panel at the 20th New Yorker Festival. The Emmy award winner will star in the film alongside performer Camilla Cabello.

Porter told writer Rachel Syme during the New Yorker Festival, “I’m going to be playing the Fairy Godmother in the new Cinderella.” As for his other projects, the actor added, “I just signed a book deal, I’m working on my memoir.” Porter continued, “I have a new movie coming out with Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne, and Salma Hayek, in January, called Like a Boss.”

Introduce your budding little theatergoes and music aficionados into the creative process of entertainment at the Kennedy Center’s newest addition, The REACH. There are nearly 500 reasons to visit this month (that’s the number of free events that will take place in the short span of 16 days!), but we kept it simple and highlighted the best five. Read on for what to see and do at The REACH’s opening festival Sept. 7-22nd.

Free Performances

Take part in the festival with free timed passes, and choose from an unprecedented range of events representative of The Reach’s mission to bring artists and audience together. Get your dancin’ boots on for an opening day appearance by homegrown go-go performer Bootsy Collins or just put Sept. 15th (Family Day) on your calendar when author Mo Willems will emcee MO-a-PALOOZA LIVE!, a one-of-a-kind concert featuring songs from his stage adaptations, along with performances by local kids’ performer and GRAMMY winning 1-2-3 Andrés!, a Kennedy Center co-commissioned piece by Squonk Opera where gargantuan puppet hands tell the story, and a show called Infinite Monster by an Australian troupe where the audience is creator. Don’t be discouraged if passes are sold out online. The Kennedy Center encourages everyone to take part in the festival and will admit stand-by visitors as space permits.

A Picnic-Perfect Green Roof

You don’t need a ticket to take in the sights and sounds of The REACH on the North Plaza. Have you ever picnicked on a roof before? This outdoor space is the largest green roof in the city, measuring over 69,000 square feet. This month it plays hosts to a number of outdoor performances and movies, but once the crowds disperse it’s the ideal gathering place for an informal meal with family and friends (if you forget the nosh, there is a casual café and coffee bar on the grounds). After lunch, let the littles chase the birds near the two reflecting ponds.

Outdoor Movies

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Muppet Movie, an interactive screening will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 15th. Bubbles, confetti pops and surprise character appearances are all a part of the sing-along (and dance-along) experience!  A screening of Jim Henson’s early work, including Sam and Friends, will take place earlier in the day. For more flicks al fresco, check The REACH site for events beyond September.

A Kid-Friendly Maker Space

The Moonshot Studio is a maker space for the performing arts where drop-in hands-on activities come in three levels—quick and easy, intermediate, and advanced—and are designed for everyone from little ones to adults. There are dance and drawing activities (Shh!!!! Don’t tell, but Elephant and Piggie may be involved here!) as well as an interactive project on courage.

Access to Hiking Trails

The seamless design by Stephen Holl incorporates the original Kennedy Center and surrounding neighborhood with a river walkway. For those wishing to picnic on the grounds or just want to pass through while hiking or biking, there is a pedestrian bridge connecting the Kennedy Center campus to the Rock Creek Park Trail, as well as bike and pedestrian access from the Roosevelt Bridge / I-66 W ramp.
