No matter how careful you are, parenting means it’s impossible to avoid the occasional worrisome scenario. While most parents tote a basic first aid kit, doctors recommend carrying these 12 items to treat wounds and stop bleeding if you find yourself too far from a medical professional, as well as preventative items such as sunscreen and hand sanitizer.
Hand Sanitizer
Zoey Naturals
Unless you're hiding under a rock, you can't go a day without hearing another Coronavirus aka Covid-19 update. You've also probably heard the best way to prevent the spread of any illness is frequen, thorough handwashing (for at least 20 seconds) and healthy dose of hand sanitizer. If you're concerned about the chemicals in some sanitizer, we recommend Zoey Naturals, which is baby-safe and paraben, sulfate and phthalate free, while still killing 99% of germs. Hello Bello also makes a hand-sanitizing spray (not recommend for babies but great for kids). We also like Clean & Well's disinfecting wipes for surfaces.
(Editor's note:, at the time of this writing all products were in stock).
It may seem like the only time to keep sunscreen within hands reach is during the summer, but it actually comes in handy in the case of an emergency, too. If you find yourself injured on a trail or even stranded on the side of the road from car issues, slathering on the protective cream will prevent an undue sunburn and one less thing to worry about.
While it may seem scary to have a survival knife in your back pocket, it definitely can come in handy. Cut gauze or bandages, fashion a walking stick in a pinch, or cut away brush. A knife is no laughing matter, but it can save your life in an emergency. Be sure to keep it far away from small hands and fingers. This one's for grown-ups only.
You never know when you'll incur a scratch, bite or cut while out hiking or camping, and that's why keeping a stash of gauze is a great idea. Use it to clean wounds, staunch bleeding or to cover from the elements. Gauze is a clean and breathable material you can't afford not to have when heading out for an adventure.
Apply pressure to wounds and keep them clean and bandaged with elastic wrap bandages. They are a small in size, but can take care of a multitude of injuries, from sprained ankles to keeping gauze in place. Take it one step further and purchase self-adhering bandages like these from Amazon and you can rest easy until you can find a doctor for treatment.
Serious injuries never happen when we expect them, but preparation can save lives. Keeping a tourniquet on hand can do just that––not only save a loved ones life from a serious bleeding injury but also give you piece of mind. You don't need to worry about tearing a strip of fabric or tying it tight enough––purchase a simple medical tourniquet and let it do all the work for you!
Getting separated from your tour group or being hindered by the elements can mean an unexpected longer time in the wilderness. Protect your family against hunger-related issues by packing simple protein food pouches that can be eaten on the run. They are quick to prepare and contain wholesome ingredients to keep you fueled and ready to press on towards home.
Finding drinkable water in the natural elements can be difficult, and that's why keeping a bottle of water purification tablets is a must. The iodine tablets purify contaminated water in 30 minutes, killing off bacteria. Staying hydrated while in the great outdoors and injured is key––this product is a no-brainer! Check out these leak-proof water bottles for you next excursion.
In case you end up staying out longer than expected, always keep a flashlight with fresh batteries on hand. Whether you're handling an injured family member or are just exhausted from a long day out with the kids and its getting dark, you can never go wrong with a flashlight in your day back or car trunk. (Also handy for playing flashlight games f you're bored).
Keep loved ones who are injured and in shock warm when you keep foil blankets on hand. They are tiny––only the size of a credit card when folded up—and can be easily carried in purses, diaper bags or backpacks without any added weight. They are great for disaster kits and perfect for keeping in your car if you encounter a car accident or other scenario when someone needs a blanket to stay warm.
Lower fevers, relieve bug bites and treat swollen limbs with an instant cold pack. Carry in your backpack and snap to start the chemical reaction that makes these ice packs cold. No need to freeze in advance, and no melting bags of ice!
Between the picky eaters, mess makers and kids who can’t sit still, mealtime can be a struggle for some families. But like most things in life, having the right tools can help. Take the headache out of mealtime at your house with these products that prevent spills, encourage choosy kids and reduce prep time. Now if only someone would invent a tool that makes broccoli more appealing…
Big-ups to this placemat (with a suction feature) that can be used at mealtime as easily as it can during playtime. Fill the outside cups with fresh-cut veggies and make hummus the centerpiece, or surround a nut butter with sweet and savory dippables, like apple slices, pretzels and celery. Use it as a self-serve yogurt bar during breakfast or a snack tray during family movie night. And when all is said and done, wash the 100% silicone placemat in the dishwasher and fill it with paints or beads for craft time.
Being a toddler parent means navigating the world of spills, especially in the sippy cup realm. Or does it? This appropriately named Munchkin cup really is a miracle. Toddlers can take a sip from anywhere along the rim when thirst strikes, and no matter how or where they tip this cup, whatever’s inside stays put. Its three, dishwasher-safe pieces come apart for easy cleaning, and the absence of straws and other crannies means no place for bacteria and other yuckies to hide.
Whether you’re two or 92, food is always more appealing when it’s plated with panache. We’re not saying it has to be Pinterest perfect, but with this 20-piece cutting set, parents can invite their toddlers to sit down to whimsical sandwiches and fancy fruit in no time. After all, who can resist a good-ol’ PB&J when it’s shaped like a dinosaur?
We love tools that cut prep time for busy parents. And this OXO chopper tops our list. It takes a delish choking hazard and cuts it into fourths with a quick push of the plunger, so you’ve got toddler-safe grapes for your kiddo in a flash. No cutting board or paring knife necessary—and that means fewer dishes, too.
Forget the traditional fork, spoon and knife set-up when it comes to toddler eating. Go with a fork, spoon and pusher instead to help kids develop fine motor skills and learn to use utensils in a snap. We love this dinosaur-themed set that comes with a sectioned plate so food stays put while kids fork it up or use the pusher to get it onto the spoon. It’s BPA- and phthalate-free and will capture your kiddo’s imagination the minute you set it on the table, with or without food. It also comes in construction and garden fairy designs.
Maybe it’s because these baking cups remind kids of cupcakes. Or maybe it’s that they give off that party vibe. Whatever the case, there’s something about these colorful liners that make them ultra appealing to toddlers. We love using them to set out colorful arrangements of finger foods at snack time. Fill each one with fresh fruit, veggies or crackers that match by color. They also make playdates that much easier. Let kiddos fill them with their choice of snacks, chunked cheeses or sandwich bites for an easy lunch break.
When our kiddos are just learning how to eat, sometimes their greatest obstacle is getting plates and bowls to stay put. That’s why we're fans of this set of stay-put suction bowls that come in three different sizes and colors. Kids can spoon cereal, yogurt, ice cream and more out of each without having it slide across the table and inevitably end up on the floor. Now if only our kiddos would stay put as easily during mealtime.
There’s nothing quite like a fresh bowl of cherries in August. But prepping them so your toddler can eat them safely… who has the time? With this OXO cherry pitter, everyone does. Pull off the stem, load in the cherry and watch the pit fly out the chute after you press it out, hole-punch-style. It’s super practical and incredibly entertaining for your tots too. At some point, they’ll be able to use it without help. Hooray for independence!
Your kid needs a mask. Whether it’s a run to the grocery store, a bike ride, or thoughts about returning to school, it’s time to stock up on face masks for your kids and family.
The CDC agrees that cloth face masks are one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your family safe by slowing the spread of COVID-19. As we’ve learned, coronavirus is spread through droplets, so wearing a mask reduces your family’s risk.
What should you look for when shopping for kids masks?
Mosts parents agree a comfortable mask, with a breathable fabric, goes a long way in staying on your child’s face. The mask should be kid-sized, i.e smaller than an adult mask.
For additional guidelines, the CDC suggests kids’ masks that have multiple layers, fit snugly around the face, are secured with ties or ear loops, and are machine washable.
Tip: Order both the ear loop and a mask with ties. For long periods of time i.e. all-day wear, kids are more comfortable with the ties than the ear loop.

Once you start offering your baby water at the 6-month mark, you can use a sippy cup, 360 cup or straw cup instead of a bottle. While sippy spouts (especially soft ones) are often easier for transitioning away from a bottle, many doctors also recommend straw cups as they help with speech and oral development. You’ll probably end up trying a few to find a favorite, but with our help, maybe you’ll nail it on the first try.
Kid can drink from any part of this 360-edge drinking cup, topped in soft silicone. New drinkers grip the two handles and guide the cup to their mouths. Detach the handles when your child has the hang of grasping the tumbler instead. With only two parts and a transparent cup and rim, it's easy to clean. Pop on the hygienic cover to keep it clean when not in use.
These 9-ounce insulated tumblers keep drinks cool and limit messes thanks to a spill-proof valve. The soft spout is easy for toddlers to drink from and gentle on teething gums. They're dishwasher-safe and free of BPA, BPS and phthalates. And the bright colors guarantee they won't get lost in the bottom of your diaper bag.
So many smart features turn this cup into a training system, helping your child learn to use a straw and drink from an open cup. The kid-size cup is made from no-slip silicone and angled on the inside for a more even flow of liquid. It has a weighted base with bumps to keep the cup from falling over. The straw also features small bumps to decrease tongue suckling and promote rounding the lips, and the curve in the straw promotes lip and jaw closure. Flip the straw upside down for more advanced sipping, and then move on to the open cup.
This compact cup is perfect for baby’s first attempts at sipping like a big kid. They’ll love the soft spout that reminds them of a bottle's nipple and handles they can easily grip. You'll love that leaking is minimal and it comes with a flip top to keep it clean when you toss it in the diaper bag or stroller.
If you prefer a hard spout style, this 7-ounce cup is a good choice. The mouthpiece is specifically designed to help protect gums and the palate while babies are teething. It's insulated so it keeps beverages colder longer. And you can even freeze liquids in the cup, which is perfect for extended trips.
Little ones can drink three different ways with the adaptable 1-2-3 Sip! from Miniware. Start your baby out with the silicone straw insert, then level up to the non-drip spouted lid (just the right size for tots), and, finally, graduate to the open cup. The easy-on-the-eyes cup is made out of plant-based bamboo fiber and vegetable starch material and has major minimalist appeal.
Once your baby has some practice drinking from a smaller cup, we love this stainless steel option that’s completely free of plastic. The 11-ounce bottle keeps beverages cool, and an outer sleeve (available in 6 colors) means little hands won't freeze while holding it. Another awesome feature: Many standard nipples and sippy spouts also fit on the cup, so you can ease the transition and offer milk as well.
Once your baby has mastered a soft-spout, it’s on to straw cups! The flexible, weighted straw on this 9-ounce cup means that babes can sip from any angle. The attached lid is super convenient when you’re on-the-go, and the cup even comes with its own brush to keep things clean.
The Lollacup can make the learning-to-drink process easier thanks to a weighted straw that helps draw water, or even a smoothie, up and into the tube no matter which way the cup is tilted. The materials are all BPA-free, BPS-free, and phthalate-free for super-safe sipping. And the cup "chick" wins major points for being so adorable and coming in seven cool colors.
Here's another plastic-free cup with tons of drinking options. It's made out of glass and has an outer plastic shield with handles and a non-slip, shock-absorbing base to prevent breakage. The cup comes with a silicone straw, but you can purchase additional tops with soft and hard spouts for versatile sipping.
This clever set helps babies transition from the bottle and then to drinking from a cup without a top. First, introduce the sippy with the hard top and handles. Later, ditch the handles and switch the lid to one that functions pretty much like a regular cup. A special insert with perforated edges will control the flow of water, to everyone's relief! Once your child has the hang of that, remove the insert and your big kid can drink from a grown-up cup.
Here's a great option for learning to drink from a spout- and straw-free cup. This trainer cup allows kids to tip and drink from any side (as they would from a regular cup), and it magically seals when they stop drinking. Another plus: You don't have to clean small straws and valve parts. What’s more, Munchkin has made a new line of “Wild Love” cups featuring threatened species like the polar bar and African elephant to support animal welfare efforts.
As the first company to offer a BPA-free baby bottle, Thinkbaby knows how important safe sipping is for families with young children. The offerings now include the ultra-safe Thinkster of Steel, which can transform a stainless cup from a baby bottle to a sippy to a straw cup with the simple twist of a cap. We love the straw option with a cross-cut design that means no messy spills. And, even better, a portion of the purchase price can go toward a charity such as Save the Whales.
Fill your child’s Easiflow 360 with something to sip on, and you’ll be thrilled to see them drinking out of a “big kid” cup. The spout-free design is great for learning how to drink out of a cup and is good for oral development. The single-piece valve is simple to clean and the cup comes in 7-ounce (with handles) and 8-ounce (without handles) options and in single cups or packs of two.
Ready to quit cleaning up spilled milk? Thought so! Here’s a cup that simply won’t dump over, even when toys and elbows knock into it left and right. The base sticks to any smooth surface, but the cup easily lifts when pulled upward for drinking.
