With St. Patrick’s Day comes plenty of green, but what if you’d rather have gold? You’ll need to set a few leprechaun traps to find out where the elusive pot o’ gold is hiding (hint: it’s not at the end of the rainbow). We’ve got the best tutorial on how to make a leprechaun trap, so give it your luckiest shot!

What You Need to Make a Leprechaun Trap

A cardboard box or shoebox
A stick (or pencil in a pinch)
A pillowcase
Food (see below)
Optional: some sparkle

Leprechaun Trap Step One: Make the Bait

Rainbow rice krispies are fun for a leprechaun trap
The Gracious Wife

Leprechauns, despite the rumors, do not subsist on pints of Guinness and shamrock-shaped cookies alone. They like a variety of foods, but most of all they appreciate a rainbow of flavors like the ones found in these rainbow recipes. Bonus: you get to keep the leftovers. This can be the most time-consuming step. If you are in a hurry, just grab a pack of Skittles and move on to step two.

Step Two: Make the Leprechaun Trap

little boy who made a leprechaun trap
Amber Guetebier

The leprechaun is usually just under a foot high, although the size varies depending on age (they shrink as they get older) and origin.* So the best method here is a simple box trap.

Get a smallish box, like a shoebox. A plain box works fine but if you want to increase your odds of getting a leprechaun,  paint the box green, a color most pleasing to them. Decorate it with anything that gives it that special glitz: glitter, coins, gemstones, or just an artistic use of the brush.

Find a stick or pencil to prop the box up. You can even use a piece of cardboard, cleverly disguised as a friendly sign.

Step Three: Add Bait to Your Leprechaun Trap

Place the “bait” on a plate underneath the lid. No string is needed. Once the leprechaun takes his first bite of your delicious food, he’ll dance with joy. This dance almost always leads to kicking the stick over. Voila. He is trapped. If you’ve got preschoolers, how cute is this printable bait template from Mama Cheaps for leprechaun traps?

Hint: Don’t bother waiting up for the leprechaun. They never show under a watchful eye.

Step Four: Get the Gold

Wait at least three hours before checking your leprechaun trap, but if you can, wait a full night. (Parents, you can leave a small note or coin in place of the treat from the escaped wee man). If your trap is empty, better luck next year. If, however, you caught your leprechaun, you’ll need to transfer it from the trap into your home. Use a soft pillowcase, and scoop up the entire box including (hopefully) the leprechaun. Remember, your goal here is to get him to reveal the location of his gold, not bring harm to him. Be firm but kind, and be persistent.

More Tips for Your Leprechaun Traps

Once you have him inside, lock your doors and close your windows. Leprechauns are master escape artists.

Be ready to barter. They are very clever and can trick you out of just about anything, but you will need to offer something in exchange for the gold (i.e., his freedom). Do not believe him when he tells you it’s “at the end of the rainbow.” They like silky fabrics, velvet, and shiny things.

Be sure you have enough food: they can eat an incredible amount of food, so be ready to lay out a feast or at the very least, a decent tea party.

If you can get them to tell you where the gold is, you truly have the luck of the Irish!

*While it was once true that a leprechaun could only be found in Ireland, there are generations of leprechauns that have naturalized in the woods, parks, and gardens across America. Rumors of how leprechauns came to the U.S. include stowing away in luggage, sliding across rainbows (totally unfounded), and the most plausible: paid passage. They are, after all, in possession of copious amounts of gold.

Editor’s note: No leprechauns were harmed in the making of this article.

We all know it goes: that shiny and new backpack becomes a little worse for wear after a few months of riding on the bus, being dragged along the halls and getting chucked on the playground. If it’s still in decent shape, but covered with mystery stains, we have good news. You can totally clean your kid’s backpack. And prevent it from getting too darn gross, too. Here’s how to clean, disinfect and refresh that backpack!

How to Machine Wash Your Backpack

iStock

Yes, most likely you can wash it in the washing machine (unless it’s leather or has leather or suede trim/bottom, in which case you'll want to use a hand-washing method). Use a gentle cycle and and use your regular laundry detergent, but don't use very much detergent. Here's the real trick, though: place the backpack inside a pillowcase or washable laundry bag. Make sure the pillowcase is tied at the top. Be sure and spot clean (see below) any tough mystery stains before machine-washing.

Let it air dry. Be sure and open all pockets and compartments to let it dry out thoroughly.

Don’t put it in the dryer. Strange things will happen.

Tip: Make sure you empty the backpack of all notes, chewed up pens, half-eaten apples, fidget spinners, tiny erasers shaped like food or any other items.

How to Hand-Wash Your Backpack

Unsplash

Fill a tub or sink with lukewarm water and use a mild soap or detergent directly in the water. Before you submerge your backpack, make sure you’ve cleaned it out entirely and spot treated any tough spots.

If you have a Jansport backpack with a suede bottom or leather bottom use this method minus the detergent.

Submerge the bag in the water and “agitate” slightly to get it clean. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the zippers, mesh areas and embroidered threads.

Once you’ve washed it, drain the soapy water and refill with clean water to rinse.

Soak in clean water and then squeeze out as much water as you can.

Air dry.

Tip: Keep the backpack tidier by tossing in snacks that won’t spill out of their packaging and rub into the bottom or inner lining. It also helps to provide snacks you know they will actually devour like these Jif® Power Ups our editors (and their kids) love.

How to Spot Clean & Disinfect

little boy going to school with a backpack
iStock

Use a tiny bit of detergent in water and spot clean with a clean sponge.

Use an old toothbrush to scrub the zippers, mesh areas and embroidered threads.

For really tough spots, try a spot-cleaning stick or stain remover.

Don’t let the mixture of detergent or stain remover dry out before rinsing it off with clean water or washing the bag using one of the methods above.

Tip: If your kiddo’s pack has been exposed to something like Athlete’s foot or another fungus, or you can just tell it is extra funktastic (your PE shorts have been in there how long??) use a spot cleaning method as above but sub in a disinfectant like Pine-Sol (never use bleach).

12 Games to Play with Grandparents

Things to Do When Grandparents Visit

How Much Time Should Kids Spend with Grandparents?

Allie Vasquez

I am a former high school Spanish and Mandarin Chinese teacher

I know that there is a high level of suffering going on in the world, but I also know that being the only curly haired person in a family of straight haired people is the pits. My mother decided that the only way to control my curls was to put my hair in a ponytail and separate it into 2 braids, which quickly got me dubbed as “The Helicopter” on the playground, where the boys would ask me to spin my head around like a propeller. Once I hit middle school, the kids in school told me I was gross because I didn’t brush my hair. I acquiesced to peer pressure, started brushing after gym class, and was then deemed “The Bush” by the boys in my science class, who would see how many pencils they could get lodged in it. Between dry brushing, chemical straighteners, and general triangle head from the ages of 8-15, I grew up hating my hair.

After I figured out the benefits of conditioning, washing my hair as little as possible, and embracing the beautiful imperfections that curly hair offers, I vowed to make life easier for my curly headed kids! While my personal curly hair routine requires more products, I have a very simple wash and go routine that I use when on vacation that more closely mimics what I do for my kids’ hair. First and foremost: we rarely ever shampoo. Curly hair is very naturally dry, and dryness creates frizz. I deep condition my own hair twice a week, and if you have kids who can sit through 20 minutes of it I would highly recommend it! My boys do not fit into that category. That’s why a leave-in conditioner is so important! I simply do not ever leave the house without it in my hair. Once I went to Rhode Island and as I got out of the shower I realized that I had left mine at home, so I ran across the street to the CVS in hotel slippers and a towel, sprayed some into my hair, and ran back to finish getting ready. It’s that important!

Finally, the key to curly hair is embracing the fact that it will never look the same two days in a row, and that’s okay! People with straight hair love curly hair because of how perfectly imperfect it is, and you should too.

Witchy Curl Magic In a Bottle

$24

Totally natural, made from spring water and essential oils, and perfect as a leave-in, refresher, or just to spray on your face and body when you need a mood boost! Perfect for kids who won't let you put anything in their hair - just mist them as they get out of the bath.

2

Denman Brush

Yes you can brush curly hair - but only when it's wet!

$19.95

I love the Denman brush because it helps with tangles, even product application, and feels amazing on your scalp. Since we don't brush our hair when it's dry, your hair needs a good brushing to stimulate circulation at the scalp to promote hair growth and to get out all the hairs that have fallen in between washes. Plus, this brush is very easy to clean.

3

Satin pillowcases

Give your curls a break while you sleep

$8.99

Cotton has tiny looped fibers that grab, pull, and split your hair follicles. And if you're like us and don't wet your hair everyday, sleeping on a normal cotton pillowcase adds to frizz and doesn't allow you to go as many days between washes. If you have kids who are wild sleepers, or just wild in general and don't let you do anything to control their tangles, this is a good passive option for keeping those curls frizz free!

Shea Moisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Leave-In Treatment

Leave in conditioner will be your best friend! Don't leave home without it!

$12.99

Shea Moisture products are my go-to for curly hair. They are all natural, and they work fabulously for all different types of curls. This leave-in treatment is easiest for me and my kids because I can spray it while they try and wriggle away from me, and it really moisturizes their hair.

Back in our day, trick-or-treating meant hunting for full-sized candy bars with an empty pillowcase, an orange UNICEF box, and a coveted Ben Cooper plastic costume. Sure those masks had no ventilation and the coats our moms made us wear ruined the effect, but man, those were the (spooky) days. Here’s a look back at some of the best ensembles from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. Which one did you have?

We didn’t even know She-Hulk was a thing.

Jem from Jem and the Holograms.

“Show’s over, Synergy!”

Road Runner

Beep, beep! Can’t catch me!

A Popple

Remember these little guys? Did we ever figure out if they were teddy bears with tails?

Barbie Cowgirl

“I’m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world.”

Wonder Woman

Even the Lasso of Truth won’t be able to save you from this trainwreck of a mask.

Princess Leia

The force was strong with this costume, but good luck fitting a cinnamon bun hairdo under that mask.

Pound Puppy

Who could resist those (pound) puppy dog eyes?

Cabbage Patch Kid

So that’s where cabbage patch kids came from!

He-Man

By the power of Greyskull! Now that we’re older, we have a deeper appreciation for built-in abs.

Glo Worm

Unfortunately, the costume didn’t come with that special inner glow.

Lisa Simpson

This was the costume if you had a pesky big brother and constantly felt like the smartest person in your family.

Chuck Norris

There was no tougher costume than the Karate Kommando himself.

Strawberry Shortcake

It was flame retardant, so that’s a relief.

Smurfs

Isn’t this costume smurfy?

Luke Skywalker

Luke, you sound just like your father.

The Real Ghostbusters

Animated TV series, not the Billy Murray film

Max Headroom

This is MMMMMMMMaaaaaxxxxx.

Six Million Dollar Man

We can rebuild him.

Planet of the Apes

Cornelius or Zira? Who knows, we could never tell them apart …

The Fonz

Frequently mistaken for Richard Nixon or Ronald Reagan by those answering the door.

Scooby-Doo

The irony was, you couldn’t fit ANY sandwiches in your mouth through that mask.

Morticia Addams

Were you Team Munsters or Team Addams Family?

The Hulk

Based on the Marvel comic, not to be confused with the Lou Ferrigno/Bill Bixby TV series.

If this post makes you feel all warm and fuzzy and nostalgic, we’re happy to report there is a cult following for vintage Ben Cooper costumes on eBay, so have at it. When your kid complains about how “itchy” their $90 Plush Minions costume is, you can break into a righteous “When I was a kid …” speech with the goods to back it up.

Make Your Fall Dreams Come True with This Pumpkin-Shaped Waffle Maker

Faster than a speeding bullet! Craftier than Martha Stewart! Blast into fun and creativity by taking a page from your kiddo’s favorite comic book, and everyone can be a superhero for the day. With a few extra items added to your next supply run, you can make a no-sew cape in as much time as it takes to save the world— at least, one they’ve created—a single afternoon. Scroll down for the easy how-to, and your littles will be flying high in no time.

You Will Need

1. 1 pillowcase

2. 1 sheet of Kuni sticky-back felt (any color) for superhero logo

3. 1 sheet of Kuni felt (any color) for superhero logo

4. Superhero Logo Template

5. Ribbon

6. Scissors

7. Hot glue gun (parental supervision required)

7. Glue sticks

9. Sharpie Marker

10. Jewels (optional)

Creating the Cape

1. Cut the pillowcase in half. We used a new jersey pillowcase because the fabric is so soft, but even an old one will do the trick. Look for the folded end, because, once cut, this will be a perfect place to insert ribbon. Tip: If you are going to use new material, iron out all the folds in the fabric before starting.

2. Roll out and measure the ribbon so there’s enough to thread through and hang from your superhero’s shoulders.

Design the Superhero Emblem

1. Print out a lightning bolt, or any other fun superhero template for tracing. (We love the simple ones from A Beautiful Mess and Vanilla Joy).

2. Trace the lightening bolt with your marker, then cut out the shape. Any yellow felt will do, but we used Kuni brand with sticky backing for extra thickness.

3. Cut out a circle from another sheet of felt (different color).

4. Hot glue the circle in the middle of the back of the cape. Pick a spot and stick with it, hot glue sets in a flash!

5. Place and secure the logo in the middle of the circle with hot glue.

3. Roll out and measure a length of ribbon for the seam along bottom of the cape and then hot glue the ribbon to the edge— this will help to keep the cape in action during play time.

6. Bonus Step: If your superhero loves a little sparkle, now is the time to add jewels!

Finish the Cape

1. Take the length of ribbon and thread it through the hole created in the folded top of the pillowcase. It should be long enough to drape around your little superhero’s shoulders.

2. Go outside and save the day!
