If you haven’t checked out the Airbnb Play Category, this is your sign. For fun-loving families, the Play Category makes drilling down to find the perfect vacation rental a breeze! These rentals are properties that include on-site fun beyond the regular amenities. Mini golf. Epic pools. Basketball courts. Arcades. When they say “Play”, they mean play. That also means that these properties are usually super family-friendly. These are the Airbnb experiences you’ve been looking for.

Sure, it makes total sense to go on a family vacation and use your rental house as home base for showers and sleeping, but these are some of the best Airbnb Play category rentals that you can have just as much fun at without even leaving! They’re the kind of places that are the destination themselves. A lot of times, that can even mean you’re saving some money on attractions if the real attraction is right where you’re staying. If you love life-sized dinosaurs, giant backyard chess, or Ms. Pac-man, keep reading. These are some of the best Airbnb experiences and vacation rentals, so get ready to make some family memories.

Read on for our six of the best all-inclusive resort for kids across Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica that provide everything you need for your dream vacation.

Additional day and night activities include themed parties, Bohemia art and music experiences, and themed parties, and dancing fiestas.
  • Family-friendly amenities: The little ones deserve to play and relax in the sunshine, too. The Hyatt Ziva’s kids club offers supervised activities for children ages 4 to 12, including arts and crafts, games, swimming, and nature activities. There’s also a children’s splash pool and seasonal turtle program.
  • Special dining options: With ten on-site bars, restaurants, and lounges, Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta caters to all tastes and dietary needs. And yes, that includes your kids’ crazy special requests; just make sure to let their staff know so they can best accommodate your family.
  • Parent tip: Head to the resort’s beloved Ratatouille dinner with a movie night. Not only can you screen this gastronomic film, but you and your kiddos will be served dishes from the movie at the same time they appear on screen!

  • Stand-out feature: Parents, get ready for a dinner with just you and your S.O. Wyndham Alltra Cancun offers babysitting services.

  • Why families love it: Parents and independent kiddos can enjoy the day at their pace at Hilton Rose Hall. Kids can find their version of fun (with staff supervision, of course!) at the Sugar Mill Falls Water Park and the kid’s or teen’s club, as mom and dad wind down at the spa. Plus, there’s even a daycare if you have little ones in tow.
  • Stand-out feature: In search of some much-needed R&R. Take advantage of the resort’s kid’s and teen’s clubs and supervised activities that’ll give you time to relax while your children have fun in a safe environment.
  • Family-friendly amenities: For thrill and excitement, children and teens can head to the kids’ clubs for swimming, volleyball, basketball, and daily activities.
  • Special dining options: Six dining options cater to all dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences at Hilton Rose Hall. Both Moonstone and Mangoes (a.k.a. the resort’s breathtaking, beach-front restaurants) serve up pizzas, sandwiches, and street food for any picky eaters in your group.
  • Parent tip: Take time to explore the local area outside of the resort for a more immersive experience. Whether it’s a cultural excursion, a nature hike, or a visit to any nearby attractions, these one-on-one bonding moments will add depth to your family vacation experience.

For the savvy sojourns: Jewel Palm Beach

  • Parent tip: Plan your trip with ample time to enjoy excursions outside the resort. The area is brimming with city tours, sailing adventures, fishing trips, and shopping, with pick-ups and drop-offs organized by the concierge.

For the splash clan: Hilton La Romana Family

Escape to a world of bliss and aquatic adventure at Hilton La Romana Family in the Dominican Republic. This all-inclusive resort is designed with water-loving families in mind, thanks to its range of water activities and motorized water sports. Back on land, there are pool games, Spanish and merengue lessons (essentially, the Latin two-step!), beach volleyball, ping pong, and a variety of board games.

  • Why families love it: Set on an eco-friendly beach and surrounded by a tropical jungle, Hilton La Romana Family offers sea seekers windsurfing, catamarans, kayaks, snorkeling, and even a diving clinic. For those seeking a little more exhilaration, the resort also offers open water diving, boating, fishing excursions, and motorized water sports for an additional fee.
  • Family-friendly amenities: What truly sets Hilton La Romana Family apart is their commitment to personalized service and tailor-made experiences, ensuring that every moment of your stay is filled with luxury, relaxation, and excitement for you and your children.
  • Special dining options: Whether your family has a favorite cuisine or looking to try something new, the resort’s six dining options offer options, from Italian to South American food. We recommend the buffet for even your most particular diners, with over five stations catering to different tastes.
  • Parent tip: Dads, we’ve got some news you might want to know. Some of the Dominican Republic’s best golf courses are within 20 minutes of the resorts, such as La Estancia, Dye Forem, and Teeth of the Dog.

For the luxe jet-setters: Jewel Grande

Experience the pinnacle of luxury at Jewel Grande in Montego Bay, Jamaica, which is a postcard that’s come to life. The serene setting oozes with self-indulgence, welcoming little ones to arcade games and table games at the kids’ clubs, and parents to rejuvenation at their award-winning spa. Dive into our splash pads for a family-friendly adventure or unwind by the pool with a refreshing drink.

  • Why families love it: Families can’t get enough of the spacious accommodations that are spread across three distinct buildings that can suit all needs. The resort provides roomy ocean-view junior suites, ideal for smaller families seeking a cozy retreat, whereas larger families or groups can book the one and two-bedroom suites. For those seeking the ultimate luxury experience, Jewel Grande offers luxurious two-bedroom penthouses and fabulous three-bedroom villas with upscale amenities and stunning views.
  • Stand-out feature: With a focus on luxury and comfort for families, Jewel Grande promises a balance of exclusive experiences and family-friendly offerings. So much so, the spa even offers specialized teen treatments and massages. Talk about the best of both worlds for bigger kids alike!
  • Family-friendly amenities: Jewel Grande offers a range of family-friendly amenities, with the kid’s club and teen lounge being popular choices for young guests. The kid’s club doesn’t skimp on entertainment with its fun-size soccer field, table tennis, pool tables, a beachfront play area, splash pad, and jungle gym.

One thing I’ve learned as a parent is that getting through all the tantrums, the endless chauffeuring, and the rejected dinners is so much easier with a trip on the horizon to look forward to—even if it’s months down the road. If you’re thinking about your next adventure (spring break is just around the corner), might we put Puerto Vallarta on your radar, if it isn’t already? I recently flew down to Mexico’s Pacific coast for the first time and, from the beautiful beaches and lush mountains to adventure sports and incredible food, it’s fair to say that I’m hooked. The only issue is that I can’t decide whether to go back with my kids or just my husband (we’re long overdue for some alone time). So I’m going to give you the rundown on both options because there are so many things to do in Puerto Vallarta and there’s definitely something for everyone.

Puerto Vallarta for the littles

No family vacation is drama-free, from sibling brawls to stomach bugs, but hopefully your kids can pick up some of the beach town’s chilled vibes. I’ve spent a few trips with my two littles at all-inclusives in other parts of Mexico where we didn’t leave the resort at all, and even though we had a great time, by the end of the trip you start to feel the monotony of it all. So I loved having a safe and vibrant town to explore when you need to switch things up, and I know my kindergartener and first-grader would too.

What to do with kids

Visiting the Malecon is one of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta
The Malecon in Puerto Vallarta

Wander the Malecon: Kiddies can live their best lives in PV, starting on the Malecon—an esplanade that runs along the beach in the heart of town where you’ll spot a cluster of giant rocking horses inviting tourists big and small to go for a ride. There’s plenty of colorful art and bronze sculpture to discover along the mile-long boardwalk, not to mention tub after tub of silky Mexican ice cream. You’ll find plenty of beaches, restaurants, and shops to explore and you can catch a free show at the open-air amphitheater, Los Arcos.

Get turnt at the TiLT Museum: You’ll love this mind-bending spot as much as your kids—just make sure your phone is fully charged because you’ll be taking a lot of pics as you wander through the different interactive 3D murals. Pose as if you’re painting a portrait of Frida Khalo, hop onto some scaffolding to pretend to make graffiti, and hang ten on a surfboard with dolphins diving overhead. Artist Tracy Lee Stum (whose other museum happens to be in New Jersey) will turn your world upside down.

Lush greenery and flowers at the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens
Vallarta Botanical Gardens

Head to the gardens: Your kids are going to want to look out for Ping Pong, the cutest little dog who belongs to one of the guides (and has a hilarious tendency to growl at the gardeners). But you’ll be too distracted by the gorgeous growth on these 180 hectares of carefully conserved land at Vallarta Botanical Gardens (VBG), from the most spectacular orchids to vanilla bean plantations (the process to grow them is wild). I’d recommend having a guide take you through to better understand the plants and wildlife, take age-appropriate hikes, and have a cooling dip in the Los Horcones River. Oh, and don’t miss the pet cemetery where lots of locals have buried their beloved dogs, cats, and birds. When everyone starts getting hangry, grab some fish tacos and chips with guac on the premises at Hacienda de Oro (and reward yourself for being awesome parents with a Vanilla Bean Mojito).

Go for a snorkel: Call up Captain Dave of Ol’ Salty’s Ranch to charter a boat for the afternoon and head to Los Arcos de Mismaloya, a striking natural rock formation that gives Amalfi vibes and has some amazing snorkeling for all ages. Our in-water guide was Tatiana from Mexico Real Tours and she was so informative and so. much. fun. Lounge about on the boat snacking on seasonal fruit (with an optional sprinkle of Tajin) and stop by Playa Colomitos, Mexico’s teeny tiniest beach. Banderas Bay is also the spot for whale-watching (Humpbacks, in particular). Look into this if you happen to be in PV at the right time of year, from December to March and note that some tours only take kids ages 6 and up.

Set sail with some pirates: Are you the best parent ever? Now you arrrr! Take your crew on a six-hour adventure on the high seas aboard a real wooden pirate ship. You’ll get breakfast and lunch, plus a full-on pirate show with acrobatics, song, and dance. And don’t worry, you won’t have to deal with any cabin fever thanks to a stop at Majahuitas Island, a natural reserve where families can kayak, snorkel, play beach volleyball, and go on a treasure hunt.

A teen rappelling down a mountain, one of the coolest things to do in Puerto Vallarta
Visit Puerto Vallarta

Find some adventure: If you’ve got older kids who love being active there are so many outdoor activities to tackle, and a great tour operator is Canopy River. You can try a ziplining circuit through the mountains or ride a raft down river rapids, and there’s also rapelling, hiking, parasailing, and more.

Where to stay: Velas Vallarta

The lush grounds at Velas Vallarta, a great family friendly all-inclusive in puerto vallarta
Velas Vallarta

For an all-inclusive experience just 20 minutes from the center of town and a few minutes from the marina, head to Velas Vallarta. The family-friendly resort is big and bustling but with 345 suites it’s not overwhelming. Large rooms easily adapt to the size of your family thanks to connecting doors that add additional bedrooms when needed, and two-bedroom family suites include a kitchen (hello, early morning cereal), dining area, living room, and balcony. There are several pools to cool off and a kid’s club for ages 4-12 that runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day (programming includes sports like tennis and soccer, board games, crafts, sand castle competitions, treasure hunts, and movie nights). Two restaurants, one of which is practically on the beach, serve up international fare, and snack stations with Mexican goodies and ice cream help keep between-meal mood swings at bay.

Puerto Vallarta for the bigs

Richard Burton fell for Puerto Vallarta after spending time there filming The Night of the Iguana. After buying his own casita, he surprised his then-lover Elizabeth Taylor with the house across the street, called Casa Kimberly (now a gorgeous boutique hotel). The pair built a bridge between the two homes, which the hot-headed couple probably used as much for storming out of each others’ houses as they did for secret rendezvous free from paparazzi. Let the spirit of Richard and Elizabeth’s steamy romance(s) reignite your passion on a parents-only trip to PV.  After a decade of marriage and two kids, my husband and I are due to get away and remember that despite the uncapped toothpaste and nagging and overall exhaustion, we really do love each other.

What to do with your partner

Explore the Cuale River Island: In the heart of downtown Puerto Vallarta is a narrow strip of land dividing the Centro and Zona Romantica districts and running alongside the Cuale River, perpendicular to the ocean. If you walk the Malecon you’ll find an entrance to the small island, where you’ll be greeted by the River Cafe (which I hear has riotous New Year’s Eve parties). Beyond the cafe is a treasure trove of art galleries, shops, restaurants, and market stalls with so many lovely ceramics, silver jewelry, straw hats, paintings, and all kinds of souvenirs for your kids. Be ready to snap some pics around the rubber trees, with their signature exposed roots, and possibly some iguanas hanging around.

restaurant staff serving tacos al pastor from a spit as part of a street taco tour, which is one of the yummiest things to do in puerto vallarta
Tacos el pastor

Take a street taco tour: When’s the last time you had four blissful hours to wander around eating tacos and churros and drinking beer? Prioritize this! The six-ish tacos we tried at various stalls, stands and small family-owned eateries were better than any I’ve ever tasted, from the smoky marlin with chipotle sauce and beef cheek to the crispiest fish tacos and al pastor cooked shawarma-style with a hunk of pineapple dripping down from the top of the spit. Mid-tour we watched a couple make from-scratch churros on the street (unreal) and capped off the night in a super-cool raicilla bar (the local distilled spirit).

Spend the night at the theatre: Consider this date night 3.0. Grab tickets to ALMA, by Rhythms of the Night, a dinner show only accessible by water. After a sunset cruise (with an open bar, if that floats your boat), you and your boo have a candlelit dinner before heading to the open-air amphitheater for a musical telling of the story of Alma. It’s all about the Mexican people’s connection to animals, nature, and the spiritual world told with some serious acrobatics and special effects.

luxury catamaran sailing is one of the best things to do in puerto vallarta

Sail through the bay: Hop aboard a large catamaran or sailboat for some quiet luxury with your other half. I swear the views will make you forget you even own a phone. You’ll anchor up at a secret cove for some snorkeling, paddleboarding, and swimming, then have lunch and a few drinks before heading back to the marina.

Eat your heart out: I couldn’t get enough of the food in PV, and I’m not just saying that because I generally subsist on leftover French toast and Xtreme Cheddar Goldfish. Looking out on the Cuale River, my 10-course tasting menu at Tintoque was easily one of the best meals of my life (the 36-hour tomato stuffed with goat cheese was a revelation). It showcased the best of Mexico in the most uniquely creative and sumptuous way. I also had an amazing meal at Makal Gastronomica, where my cocktail came in a test tube and combined raicilla, coffee (because mom), and a cocoa drink called chilate.

a street with brightly lit bars in the Zona Romantica, one of the fun things to do in Puerto Vallarta
Zona Romantica

Live it up in the Zona Romántica: The nightlife is popping in the romantic zone, also known as Old Vallarta, which is one of the top LGBTQ+ destinations in Mexico. You’ll find everything from drag shows to mezcal bars and loads of world-class restaurants so you can live it up like you did before your schedule filled up with soccer practices and toddler gymnastics.

a couple giving the thumbs up while driving an atv over jorullo bridge, one of the most fun things to do in puerto vallarta
ATV Tour on Jorullo Bridge

Go for a wild ride: If you’re looking for some couple’s adventure, join an ATV tour over what is said to be the world’s longest vehicular suspension bridge. Jorullo Bridge crosses the Cuale River at almost 500 feet, so it’s sure to get your adrenaline pumping. You can rip through the Sierra Madre Occidental on your own ATVs or cozy up on one and take turns driving. Tours often include a trip to the El Salto waterfall (bring bathers!) and a tequila tasting.

Where to stay: Casa Velas

The beautiful pool and Spanish facade at Casa Velas all-inclusive in Puerto Vallarta
Casa Velas

A sister resort to Velas Vallarta but without the little ones, Casa Velas is a luxe adults-only all-inclusive that’s a lot more intimate—and a whole lot quieter. From the moment you arrive and settle into a plush couch for the most relaxing check-in experience of your life (fruity tequila popsicles included), you can feel your entire body relax. Each of the boutique resort’s 80 suites is beautiful and spacious (mine had a personal plunge pool on the terrace) and I loved the overall Spanish Hacienda vibe. With just one main pool and one restaurant, it’s a slower lifestyle than your typical all-inclusive, perfect to unwind and reconnect. For a change of scenery, hop on the resort’s shuttle and it’s just a few minutes to Táu Beach Club with private ocean access and seaside eats, or book a round of golf at the Marina Vallarta golf course (you’ll save 25%). I’m more of a massage girl, and ABJA spa does not disappoint (be sure to take advantage of their hydrotherapy tub, sauna, and steam rooms).

Live vicariously through these crafty parents (and get a little inspiration if you are one!)

Before the days when your kid breaks your brain with three last-minute Halloween costume changes, parents enjoy a simpler time—one where you can dress your baby in any costume you want. And oh the cuteness! Some parents take these looks to the next level by building elaborate stroller costumes that turn their little’s rides into everything from bulldozers to rocket ships, which is particularly convenient if you have a big sibling with more stamina going door to door. While we don’t all have the energy to partake, they’re super fun to look at, so we’ve gathered the best Halloween stroller costumes for your viewing pleasure.

Shopkin

She may be too young to play with her big sis’s Shopkins, but this babe sure looks adorable dressed as one! Her expression may say SOS, but her stroller is pure Halloween genius.

Top Gun

This pilot feels the need…the need for speed! His parents went all out to give their little Maverick a couple of wings to fly.

Skid Steer

How cute (and well-constructed) is this stroller skid steer? We’re floored. And you know this toddler is definitely feeling themself sitting pretty next to a real-life bulldozer.

Buzz Lightyear

To infinity and beyond…or at least around the block. Either way, little Buzz and his glowing rocketship are sure to light up the neighborhood.

Astronaut

Make some space on the sidewalk for NASA’s newest member, Squeal Armstrong. He’s clearly over the moon to be riding in a sweet stroller rocketship.

The Claw

This is a legendary Halloween stroller costume and we are obsessed! Extra points to the sleepy little bebe who took a nap while riding in The Claw.

Bubble Bath

Splish splash! A double stroller transformed into a very bubbly bath thanks to lots of balls, a precious little rubber duckie, and a fluffy purple loofah. The best part? No water all over your bathroom floor.

Paramedic

Is there a doctor in the house? With this mini MD patrolling the ‘hood you’re sure to have a smooth Halloween eve. Her beaming smile is a salve for whatever ails ya.

Jungle Cruise

This family nailed their Jungle Cruise costume. We bet they’re cruising the streets looking for an ancient candy that can heal the world.

Dragon

This little dragon master seems blissfully unaware that he’s quite literally in the belly of the beast. We love how this costume transformed a simple umbrella stroller into something vibrant and exciting.

Ladybug

Another simple yet sweet option for a hot climate, we love this wee ladybug!

Pirate Ship

Arrrrr you coming trick-or-treating? This pirate ship blew our minds! Hope no one has to walk the plank on Halloween night.

There’s no better place to spend the summer than at a Seattle splash zone—from parks with water play and splash pads to family-friendly beaches

Looking for a family-friendly summer staple in Seattle? Just find a spot to splash! On a hot summer day, when kids want to play in the water, these city spots are perfect for afternoons out or quick, post-playground cool-off sessions. There’s truly no better place to splash and play than at a Seattle spray park, splash pad, wading pool, or beach. Here’s what you need to know about Seattle’s free water play areas, including what’s open and when, so you can plan your best summer ever.

Seattle Sprayparks & Splash Pads

With longer hours than wading pools and the perk of being open rain or shine (sprayparks only close in the case of thunder and lightning), sprayparks are a summer must. This year, Seattle sprayparks are open through Labor Day (read on for details). Bring the kids any time between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. to get their splash on. You can find a map and updates on Seattle’s spraypark and wading pools online.

Insider Tip: Some spayparks are activated by a push button.

International Fountain at Seattle Center
Perhaps the most well known, and certainly the largest fountain in Seattle, the International Fountain in the heart of Seattle Center is an undeniable showstopper. Built in 1961 for the World’s Fair, the fountain has choreographed musical numbers and new LED lighting with jumping jets of water that surprise even the most nimble of water lovers. Maybe this will be the summer when your kiddos (and you?) finally touch the silver dome in the center of the fountain without getting a face-full of water? For a quieter fountain experience nearby, also try out the Fountain of Creation just northeast of the International Fountain in Seattle Center or the Center Steps Plaza splash pad.

Tukwila Spray Park
Located just a few miles outside of the city at the Tukwila Community Center, the Tukwila Spray Park is a popular place for many West Seattle and South Seattle families. Little ones will love the water dome and gentle sprayers and big kids will love the water cannons and bucket that dumps water on splashers below. The park has plenty of grassy space to throw down a blanket and enjoy a picnic and the nearby playground is an added perk.

Beacon Mountain in Jefferson Park
If you need a park with a view and plenty of other things to do, hit up the splash park at Jefferson Park. This jewel of Beacon Hill is perfect for smaller tots and has lots of space for parents to soak up some rays and catch vistas of downtown and the Olympic Mountains. Plus, there's two zippy tube slides next to the spray park for even added fun.

Highland Park Playground
After closing its wading pool in 2008, this little gem in West Seattle reopened in 2013 with a new and vastly improved spray park in lieu of its old wading pool and received another face lift in 2017. If your kids stop hopping through the water spouts long enough, and can keep clear of the big bucket water dumps, they might want to take a break at the new and improved playground before heading home.

South Lake Union Park
Right on the water in the heart of South Lake Union is a downtown splash pad that is the perfect refresher after a stroll around SLU or lunch at one of the many new restaurants in this revitalized part of town. You can also cruise the nearby Museum of History and Industry, rent a free Peapod boat (Wednesdays through Sundays, year-round) at The Center for Wooden Boats or board the Queen Anne Revenge pirate ship parked at the dock next to MOHAI. Or, just splash around, enjoy the fountains, the views of the Space Needle and the sea planes flying over head.

Georgetown Playfield
As one of Seattle's newer splash pads, this is an oasis of fun in the middle of South Seattle. The fountain-filled water area is located near the intriguing airplane-themed playground at the north end of the park, so if your kids get tired of splashing, they can always hit the swings for a change of pace.

750 S. Homer St.

Northacres Park
If you’re looking for a full day of summer fun, try out the North Acres Park between I-5 and Haller Lake. The playground was fully renovated in 2012 and the wooded area has gentle walking paths (perhaps the perfect spot for a game of water balloon tag?). And if Fido needs some exercise as well, bring him along; there’s an off-leash dog park. The spray park is a labyrinth, which adds new meaning to getting lost in the lazy days of summer.

Yesler Terrace Park
Another splash pad option that offers an outstanding playground is Yesler Terrace Park. Recently renovated, families will find fantastic views alongside plenty of play spots here. It's pretty much a spend the day kind of place when the sun is out.

Even More Sprayparks: You can also take the kids to splash and play at Judkins Park, Miller Community Center, John C. Little Park, Pratt Playground Sparypark and Ballard Commons in 2023.

Seattle Wading Pools

Once the mercury hits 70 degrees, the floodgates open and the city’s wading pools are filled. If you want to see your kids wallow around like lazy hippos (or more likely … hyperactive hippos), check out our favorite wading pools around the Emerald City.

Insider Tip: Seattle wading pools will stay open until anywhere between mid-August 16 and Labor Day, depending on the location, with various hours when the conditions are right (no rain in the forecast and a prediction of 70 degree temps or higher). If the weather is questionable, call the Wading Pool Hotline (206-684-7796). It’s updated at 9:30 a.m. daily with open and closure information. You can also check the city’s wading pool Facebook page. To find the wading pool closest to you, check the Seattle Parks and Recreation website.

Green Lake Park Wading Pool
Located on the north side of Green Lake, this is the largest of Seattle’s "Big Three" wading pools, and probably the most popular. Cool your heels here after a spin around the lake and you’ll be an instant part of the very large fan club for this summer time hot spot. Psst! After you splash, hit the Ben & Jerry's scoop shop across the street.

Hours: Daily, noon-7 p.m.

7201 E. Greenlake Dr. N.
Online: seattle.gov

Lincoln Park Wading Pool
Although it’s the smallest of the “Big Three” wading pools, the prime location of Lincoln Park along the lovely beaches of West Seattle make it a one of the most beautiful spots around for a quick dip. If you’re looking for a late afternoon or evening wade, this is your wading pool, as it catches lots of late afternoon sunshine. And if you need total immersion, Colman Pool is right down the hill. Note: the wading pool is located next to the north play area.

Hours: Daily, noon-7 p.m.

8011 Fauntleroy Way S.W.
Online: seattle.gov

Magnuson Park Wading Pool
Technically not one of the “Big Three” wading pools, it is one of the wading pools that will be open daily throughout the summer. Magnuson is in the second largest park in Seattle and therefore boasts tons of other stuff to do (beaches, playground, butterfly garden, off-leash dog park) in addition to having a super-sweet wading pool.

Hours: Daily, 12:15-6:30 p.m.

7400 Sand Point Way N.E.
Online: seattle.gov/parks/find/parks/magnuson-park

Volunteer Park Wading Pool
This historic grassy park in Capital Hill is a bastion of green space in the city. In fact, if it weren’t for the amazing views of downtown and the Space Needle, this pastoral spot might have you forgetting you were in the city at all. Bring a picnic and plan on staying a while, even after you’ve had your fill with splashing through the nice big wading pool. And yes, this wading pool is one of the city's "Big Three."

Hours: Daily, noon-7 p.m.

1247 15th Ave. E.
Online: seattle.gov

Bitter Lake Wading Pool
Located on the north end of the city, this wading pool doesn't disappoint, and neither do the park amenities that come along with it. In addition to a spot for kids to play hippo or Jaws, you'll find a playground and lighted tennis courts (sounds like a great after swim activity to us!) all right next to the large community center. Picnic, swim and play is the trifecta play at Bitter Lake.

Hours: Wed.-Fri., noon-7 p.m.

13035 Linden Ave. N.
Online: seattle.gov

Wallingford Playfield Wading Pool
Super centrally located (just blocks from Molly Moon's ice cream and Fainting Goat Gelato if you need a sweet summer treat), Wallingford’s wading pool is that “just right” size for a mid-week romp in the water. The pool is right next to the playground which has both a sandbox and “easy” slide area for tiny tots and a great climbing area and bigger slides for more advanced adventurers.

Hours: Thu.-Sat., noon-7 p.m.

Dahl Playfield Wading Pool
Located between the Ravenna and Wedgewood neighborhoods you'll find this picturesque park and wading pool. We love the funky rock sculptures that are as intriguing to kids as they are as parents, as much as we love the park's clean playground. Our suggestion? Grab your favorite donut from nearby Top Pot for an after-swim treat the kids will thank you for.

Hours: Tue.-Thu., noon-7 p.m.

7700 25th Ave. N.E.
Online: seattle.gov

Delridge Wading Pool
With so many ways to play at Delridge, the shady wading pool might be a second thought. The park's highlight has got to be the skatepark that boasts both easy runs for beginners and huge bowls for seasoned skaters and hard core BMX bikers. Watch them land sweet tricks from your grassy spot by the "watering hole." There's also a playground for after swim activity and a grassy field that practically screams "kite!" on a sunny summer day.

Hours: Wed.-Fri., noon-5:30 p.m.

These are just a few of our favorites, but families can also wade in at a nearby Seattle wading pool in your neighborhood.

Seattle Beaches

One of the best parts of living in Seattle is that there is no shortage of family-friendly beaches. Some are great for sand castles, while others have interesting critters awaiting you under every rock. Our advice? When you play at a beach this summer, remember to bring your buckets!

The City of Seattle is posting lifeguards at a selection of Seattle beaches. Lifeguards will be on duty from noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on the weekends at these beaches. In addition to those on our list of favorites, lifeguards will also be at Magnuson Beach, Pritchard Beach and West Green Lake Beach. There are three beaches that will be closed for the summer in 2023: Matthews Beach, Seward Park and East Green Lake Beach.

The city encourages families to swim only when and where lifeguards are present so everyone can have a safe summer.

Golden Gardens Park
On a sunny day in Seattle, everyone seems to have the same idea: Get to Golden Gardens immediately! This park has a fabulous updated kids play area behind the community building, but even more alluring is the sandy beach with gently lapping waves and fire pits for epic beach fires. Get here early to reserve a picnic spot. It's truly packed on sunny days and for good reason.

No lifeguard on duty.

Discovery Park
Being the largest park in the city means you'll have to hoof it to get to the beach if you park at the Visitor’s Center or other lots up on the bluff (you can get a beach parking permit at the Environmental Learning Center if you have kids under 8 or seniors in your crew), but the wooded walk (not for strollers) is lovely and drops you off in a whole new world of beach-y wonder. The beach is jam-packed with lots of driftwood for fort-making and the perfect spot for kite flying and beach combing. Psst! Don't forget to plan a stop at the playground near the Visitor's Center.

No lifeguard on duty.

Madrona Park Beach
If your tots like to dig in the sand while splashing, head down to Madrona Beach, just south of Leschi, where kids can turn on a spigot to fill a tile-lined river bed running through the beach into Lake Washington. Build dams, reservoirs or a moat for your sand castle and then take a dip in the lake.

853 Lake Washington Blvd.
Online: seattle.gov

Madison Park Beach
This smaller beach is all about location, location, location. And while you're not buying a house here, you can set down roots, at least for the day. The beach can be crowded on the sunniest of days, but don't let that stop you from taking up real estate on the sandy shores. When the kids are waterlogged, head to the park just up the hill. Don't forget to stop by the Madison Park Bakery for a cookie or at Scoop Du Jour for a drippy waffle cone before heading home. Nothing tastes better on a hot day.

4201 E. Madison St.
Online: seattle.gov

Alki Beach Park
Head to Alki if you’re looking for a beach walk that just keeps going and going and going. (Hint: If a certain small someone needs to take a stroller nap and you’d like your walk to last more than 10 minutes, head to Alki.) With 2.5 miles of paved sidewalks right along the beach, you’re all set. And, if you’re up for some beach volleyball, you can usually find that too! Psst...if you don't want to pack a lunch, there are plenty of kid-friendly eateries along Alki Avenue.

No lifeguard on duty.

Mount Baker Park Beach
Although small in comparison to some of the other parks and beaches listed here, this spot in South Seattle is perfect for your little beach bums. There’s a diving board for those who just have to cannon ball and calmer waters for ones who want to wade. All this, and easy parking right next to the beach as well as a playground for more serious running around.

Insider Tips:
1. Sprayparks are chemically treated and filtered much like a swimming pool (water is re-circulated, which makes them a “greener” choice than wading pools) and will automatically shut off and rebalance themselves back to public health standards. Seattle Parks and Recreation would like to remind us all, "not to wear our street clothes in the spraypark, and please do not use it as a shower.” ‘Nuf said!

2. Wading pools are filled and drained daily. They are chemically treated but not filtered throughout the day. They are hand-checked hourly to make sure the water meets health code, but there’s a whole lotta bodies in those pools, so best not to drink the water there either.

3. Remember to call the wading pool hotline at 206-684-7796 to find out what's open and what's not throughout the summer.

4. Please follow all state and local health and safety guidelines when visiting these sprayparks and wading pools so everyone can play safely this summer.

Planning a vacation to Southwest Florida? We’ve broken down fun activities to do with kids in and around Fort Myers, no matter their ages.

Florida and summer vacations with children practically go hand-in-hand. There are activities almost everywhere you turn, family-friendly resorts and hotels (with some options for waterfront access, might we add), incredible eco tourism, white-sand beaches, and, of course, year-round sunshine.

As you begin your search for the perfect destination in the Sunshine State, we’re here to narrow down your results with one special location that delivers excitement and family bonding: Fort Myers and its surrounding areas.

Located in the southwest region of Florida and along the Gulf of Mexico, the greater Fort Myers area is a go-to for families looking for a wholesome vacation. The destination’s secluded islands, beloved beaches and welcoming neighborhoods offer relaxation, outdoor recreation, and most importantly, kid-approved adventures for every age. So whether you have infants, threenagers, tweens or teens, Fort Myers has exactly the activity to keep them (and you!) all smiles.

Check out our guide below to discover things to do with your tribe in the Fort Myers area.

For Infants: Ages 0 – 2

Roam Unique Gardens & Take a Train Ride at Lakes Park

Lakes Park has a garden haven that’s perfect for little learners to explore and play. Head to the children’s garden for hands-on activities and musical play stations that are whimsically designed in shapes of flowers, lily pads and trees, as well as the fragrance garden for a picturesque succulent collection that provides photo opps everywhere. Stop by the Railroad Museum of Southwest Florida, located right at the park, for sights of historic locomotives, railroad tracks and artifacts. Our favorite activity is the mile-long, miniature train ride that takes you through the woods, lakes and a tiny village depicting the area during the 1950s.

See Manatees at Manatee Park

As the name touts, you can catch a glimpse of manatees at this stroller-friendly destination during cooler Florida months, from late December through February. Though if you’re planning to go during the summer, the Manatee Park also has a breathtaking butterfly garden that’s certain to wow tiny eyes and on-site playgrounds for a nice baby buggy break. Did we mention parking is only $5 and the restrooms are clean and spacious? That’s a win-win in our book!

Spend a Day by the Pool with a Resort Pass

In Fort Myers and its surrounding areas, being close to a pool or beach is convenient for combatting long days in the sun—especially with an infant in tow. While resorts in the area offer these amenities, some vacation rentals and Airbnbs in non-coastal communities may not. To get all the perks of a resort, from splash pads and lazy rivers to poolside bars, without having to stay there, purchase a day pass for a one-day indulgence. Depending on where you book, prices can range from $25 up to $115 per adult, with most offering free entry for infants.

For Toddlers: Ages 3 – 5

Set Sail on Salty Sam’s Pirate Cruise

Mini pirates will rejoice on this Gulf of Mexico sailing adventure where kiddos can board a 65-foot pirate ship for 90 minutes worth of pirate-themed fun: face painting, games, sword fighting and treasure hunting. Salty Sam’s Pirate Cruise is available at both 11 a.m., leaving you with the rest of the day to explore Fort Myers, and 7:30 p.m. for a golden hour, sunset cruise. Upgrade your toddler’s package (boarding pass included!) for special souvenir items that’ll get them into character, like an eye patch, pirate hat, toy cutlass, and, of course, a bag full of buried booty. Moms and dads, help yourself to a “parent only” drink at the galley.

Let ‘Em Play at Coconut Point Mall

Although some can argue that malls and tots don’t go hand in hand, we’re here to tell you that this outdoor mall has just what you need to keep cries at bay. With an interactive children’s play area, your tots can play in the 14-foot-tall walk-in castle (that’s guarded by a moat and two giant alligators!), crawl through a dragon cave and run across a family of turtles. Although the play area is technically outdoors, it’s completely covered, so your kids can run around in the shade on extremely warm or rainy days. There’s even ample seating that’ll give you a moment to rest as you watch your little ones make friends. Coconut Point Mall also has a Build-A-Bear Workshop, Five Below, a toy store and countless restaurants for an in-between-shopping meal.

Enjoy a Day of Outdoor Fun at The Shell Factory & Nature Park

A Fort Myers staple, The Shell Factory & Nature Park is brimming with outdoor activities that’ll take up your entire day (now that’s what we call easy planning). Your children can ride the carousel for only $1, toss water balloons at the “water wars” station and go gem mining with their very own sifter and sandbag loaded with treasures. The park also features paddle boats and bumper boats for on-the-water fun.

For Big Kids: Ages 6 – 10

Spot Wildlife on a Hike Through J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge’s Trails

Need to burn off some of your kid’s never-ending energy? J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is the perfect place to get them moving and also introduce them to native Floridian wildlife. The 7,600-acre wildlife refuge is home to 51 types of reptiles and amphibians, 32 mammal species and more than 245 species of birds. Walk or bike the 4-mile, round-trip Indigo trail to spot alligators, night herons or white ibises, or sign up with Tarpon Bay Explorers to take a guided 90-minute tram tour.

Collect Seashells at Gasparilla Island State Park

About an hour-and-a-half-drive from Fort Myers, Gasparilla Island is a must-visit. You’ll be able to enjoy the experience of southwest Florida’s beaches without all the crowds. Swim, snorkel or fish the gorgeous blue-green water then wander the shoreline that offers unmatched seashell collecting. Before the sun sets, though, head to the nearby Port Boca Grande Lighthouse. Originally built in 1890, this beautifully-preserved lighthouse now houses a family-friendly museum filled with “please touch” exhibits (local bones, fossils and shells).

Take on Epic Water slides at Sunsplash Family Water Park

Time to unleash your inner child. As the largest waterpark in Cape Coral (a quick 20-minute drive from Fort Myers), Sunsplash Family Water Park boasts over 14 acres of water-filled fun, from slides and tube rides to pools, a lazy river and a play area (including toddler-sized slides) for younger swimmers. Thrill seekers in your clan won’t be able to get enough of the park’s 30-foot-high slide tunnels and the 457-foot single or double rider tube rides, which is one of the longest slides in Florida. The minimum height requirement for most single rides is 48 inches tall, whereas double riders who are accompanied by an adult must be a minimum of 36 inches.

For Tweens & Teens: Ages 11+

Grip it and Rip it at Popstroke

Older kids will appreciate this family-friendly golf and outdoor dining concept that provides a contemporary take on your traditional mini golf outings. Featuring two 18-hole putting courses that were designed by Tiger Woods himself, Popstroke has a full-service menu with appetizers, entrees, dessert and cocktails (yes, please!). There’s even an ice cream parlor with 24 different flavors of cold, creamy goodness to keep you cool in the heat. If you have little ones in the group, there’s also a children’s playground to keep them happy, too.

Try Your Hand at Stand-Up Paddleboarding with Gulf Coast Kayak

A trip to Fort Myers isn’t complete without an aquatic adventure. Gulf Coast Kayak provides guided tours for both first-time and experienced stand-up paddleboarders. Book their two-and-a-half nature tour to sharpen your skills and explore the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve. You’ll have the chance to learn about the Calusas who paddled the same waters, while keeping an eye out for dolphins, manatees and stingrays.

Experience All the Thrills at Gator Mike’s Family Fun Park

Gator Mike’s Family Fun Park packs in a ton of activities that’ll take more than one day to experience. If time permits, you could head to this outdoor adventure park over the span of your vacation to explore all there is. We’re talking go-karts, rock climbing, aerial ropes, ziplining, mini-golf, an ax-throwing range and a paintball course. Gamers will also appreciate the indoor arcade, where prizes are up for grabs. There’s truly something for everyone here!
