This may be true every year, but this time, we mean it: 2024 is THE year of the sequel. It appears nearly every film-favorite character—from Michael Keaton’s nostalgic bio-exorcist to Jack Black’s kung fu-fighting panda, to Disney’s Kings of the Pride Lands—is furthering their storyline on the big screen. No bother to us, though—we are here for it!

Ahead, we break down the new family movies in 2024 that you and your littles can enjoy together. They start early next year and continue through the ball drop, so no matter when the kids utter those dreaded two words, “We’re bored,” there’s a family-friendly title just waiting to whisk them away to another time and place. Plus, we all know there’s nothing a bucket of buttered popcorn and a great story can’t resolve.

"Kung Fu Panda 4"

Everyone's favorite kung fu master panda, Po, returns to the screen after nearly a decade for another adventure—this time with a clever corsac fox as his sidekick. On the cusp of becoming the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, Po must train someone to take his place as the Dragon Warrior, priming the two floofs for a knockout action comedy the whole family will love.

"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire"

It's summertime, but a massive cold spell is threatening another Ice Age. So, who they gonna call? You got it.

One day, when he spots a rhino that was killed for its horn, he gets his wish. A beautiful way to introduce little ones to heavy issues including animal rights and poaching, Thabo is a thoughtful and fun new kids' movie the whole family will love.

Of course, you don't have to be a cat person to enjoy this animated addition—just a fan of whimsical charm and hilarious hijinks.

"Robot Dreams"

Spanish director Pablo Berger's Robot Dreams was a surprise nominee at this year's Oscars. It lost the best-animated film award to The Boy and the Heron, but that doesn't make it any less magical. About a city pup who orders a companion robot to stave off loneliness, the '80s-set musical has little dialogue but oodles of charm. It's one of those viewing experiences that will entertain all the eyeballs in the room, but go a step further with the adults and have them crying buckets.

"Inside Out 2"

Pixar rarely misses, and the studio's original Inside Out managed to leave all the uppity Cannes Film Festival buffs in fits of tears. Now that's an accomplishment! With the second iteration, protag Riley has entered teen-dom, and Joy, the bright-eyed leader of her inner spectrum of feels, faces a new era, as a demolition team makes room in their headquarters for new, more complex emotions—like the dreaded anxiety. Oh, and Riley is barreling toward puberty.

"Despicable Me 4"

Gru and his adorable family are back for another vibrant animated escapade on the big screen. Though the fourth film's premise remains locked behind tight lips at the moment, you can almost definitely expect the introduction of a new super-villain, plenty of Minions mockery, and a world-saving toon-venture that only Gru and his kiddos can take care of.

"Harold and the Purple Crayon"

The children's picture book, on which this new family movie coming to theaters in 2024 is based, was published in 1955. Written and illustrated by Crockett Johnson, it's a wonderfully magical story about a little boy who goes on a nightlong odyssey through the woods, over the sea, and past dragons—all imagined with his singular purple coloring stick. Here's hoping the newest adaptation is just as imaginative.

"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice"

After years of rewrites and delays caused by the pandemic and writers' strikes, the sequel to Tim Burton's 1989 hit afterlife comedy is just months away from possessing the big screen. And a lot has changed: Beetlejuice is now married, Lydia has a daughter, and there's a new detective in the Netherworld—one who might be able to tell us more about how the freelance bio-exorcist bit the big one.

"The Wild Robot"

A comment on the intersection of nature, technology, and acceptance, this is just the first tale in a series of three. So we may expect sequels in the future.

Always rife with adventure, the Paddington movies are as charming as they are fun to look at, and this Brown family addition is no different, as the P-bear and his humans head to his native Peru to visit his Aunt Lucy, unaware of the mystery that awaits them.

"The Best Christmas Pageant Ever"

An adaptation of the 1972 best-selling family book by Barbara Robinson, this humorous holiday film is sure to bring the necessary cheer and laughter this next season. It's about the Herdman siblings, a group of misbehaving misfits who take over their church's annual pageant and, to everyone's surprise, deliver a show about the true meaning of Christmas. This is one kids' movie coming out that we're especially excited to see.

(Extremely Large and Formidable) operative and an expert tracker. Their goal: to find Santa and rescue him from the clutches of a villain with no holiday spirit. According to Dwayne Johnson, who stars as the E.L.F. op, you can expect an action comedy that's a mix of Jumanji, Miracle on 34th Street, and It's a Wonderful Life.

When news that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were starring as Elphaba and Glinda in the movie version of the award-winning Broadway play Wicked, mics dropped the world over. Thankfully, we don't have long to wait to see what these tonsil powerhouses can do with the musical that spills the details about how two friends became adversaries in the Land of Oz. The tale will be stretched over two parts, with the first movie coming to theaters in late 2024.

Those are about the only plot details we have so far, but don't worry, November will be here before we know it and we'll all be bopping along to tunes sung by Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, both of whom are reprising their roles as Moana and the demigod Maui, respectively.

"The Untitled Karate Kid Movie"

In 2010, producers resurrected the beloved, butt-kicking '80s franchise with a modern retelling of a fish out of water who embraces the teachings of a kung fu master. Fourteen years later, the dōjō is again open for big-screen business. Fans of the martial arts franchise are probably familiar with Netflix's Cobra Kai, which has continued the Karate Kid-verse with aplomb, so it will be interesting to see how the new movie ties into those events—if at all.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3"

Word is conflict will come in the form of Shadow the Hedgehog, who appeared in the last movie's mid-credits stinger.

Mufasa is a new family movie 2024 from Walt Disney Studios — Walt Disney Studios via Instagram

The story of Mufasa picks up after the events of the original, with Simba parenting a cub of his own. It also serves as a prequel, as it looks back on the legend of Mufasa, the original king of the Pride Lands. Another of Disney's live-action films, this one will also be styled with photorealistic, computer-generated animals, like the 2019 version starring the voice of Beyoncé. Fingers crossed Queen Bey is on the marquee for this soon-to-be hit, too.

There are a lot of versions of this story out there, but how many of them feature Michael Caine as Scrooge and the big-hearted Kermit as Bob Cratchit? Fair warning: his job is to scare Scrooge, so the Ghost of Christmas Future is pretty scary.

Little Puffer Miniature Steam Train

Located inside the San Francisco Zoo, a ride on the Little Puffer is the perfect way to take a walking break, and still observe a variety of animals from the cars. Within this fully functional farm is a short railway operated by Ardenwood’s Railroad Museum, that takes you from one end of the property to the other. On board, you'll find staff and docents dressed in period costumes taking you back to when railroads connected the East Bay’s farms to towns and cities. Western Railway Museum

Who wouldn’t want to play dodgeball, soccer, and capture the flag over mid-winter break? We guarantee the kids will have more fun at Arena Sports than they will if they're stuck at home. Many Arena Sports locations will be running mid-winter break camps, and they fill up fast, so be sure to plan ahead, parents. We love that campers can come for full- or half-days and for a single session or stay the whole week. Flexibility is key these days, isn't it? Camps run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. for full day and in the afternoon from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. for half day. Dates vary based on local school districts' mid-winter break schedules.

Can you dig it? The Tilth Alliance will have kids Gardening for Pizza over mid-winter break. Hosted at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands, this hands-on camp is a full culinary experience—from garden to table. Kids ages 5 and up will spend the week learning what it takes to make pizza—wait for it—from scratch. Starting in the garden and working all the way through kneading the dough and putting on the toppings, kids will develop the skills and knowledge to make and bake their own at home. The fact it ends with a celebratory pizza party on the last day is a total win.

Kong Academy

Kick cabin fever to the curb when you sign up the kids (ages 6-9) for this combo outdoor-indoor parkour camp with Kong Academy. They'll get a chance to learn new skills and practice what they already know as they make their way over, around, and sometimes under obstacles at this week-long, half-day camp. It all starts with an engaging warm-up and games before the guided lesson begins. Then it's off to try what you've learned and play a bit too before heading home. Turns out, kids don't need to run away to join the circus over mid-winter break. They can attend camp at SANCA instead. And since no previous classes are necessary to attend camp, it's a great place to start, if you have a kiddo who is interested in learning circus arts. There are two camps to choose from this session. Younger wannabe performers (ages 6-8) can check out Circus Odyssey where they will develop body awareness through tumbling, balancing, ring passing, and partner acrobatics. Older kiddos (ages 9-12) will become Ringmasters, linking individual skills into sequences and practicing choreography.

Made Sewing Studio

Great things are happening at this Greenwood sewing studio over mid-winter break, where families will have two camps to choose from. If a longer camp is what you're after, try the Animal Onesie Pajama camp (Feb. 22-24). Unicorn horns, kitty ears, and fuzzy tummies are all in the mix. Or stick to a quick two-day P.J. Party camp (Feb. 20-21) where kids will learn sewing basics, make PJ pants and a gum drop floor pillow. Whatever your kiddo's whimsy, they'll get a chance to explore it and make it here. No previous experience is required to sign up. Remember to bring a snack and a mask and dress for outdoor play—it's all part of the day. The more things change, the more one thing stays the same: Blake Lively cracking us up whenever she posts something on social media. The 35-year-old actress is currently very pregnant with her fourth child with husband Ryan Reynolds, and on Instagram, she offered a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse of her ever-growing baby bump—and some of the struggles she’s facing during this pregnancy.

Namely, working out. In the post, Lively shared some side-by-side pics of her hitting the gym, looking incredible as usual in a pair of leggings and a sports bra, with her trainer, Don Saladino. She’s not pregnant in the photo on the left, but the photo on the right was clearly taken recently, because that belly is poppin’.

“Been doing @donsaladino ‘s workout program for months now,” Lively wrote in the caption for the side-by-side shots. “Something’s not working.”

Oh, and in case that didn’t already make you snort into your morning coffee, she also tagged Reynolds right in the middle of her bump, because of course she did.

Lively and Reynolds continue to be absolute couple goals and some of our favorite celeb parents. They constantly keep things real on their social media, where they share snapshots and stories of raising their kids, and relentlessly and hilariously troll one another. Just recently, they took a family outing to the Polar Express, where Reynolds posted about his lifelong dream of meeting Mrs. Claus.

“She was everything I’d always dreamed since I was a kid. She smelled like cinnamon buns and sangria,” he wrote. There was just one problem, which Reynolds revealed later on his Instagram stories.

“I cropped my wife’s shoes out in the photo I posted,” he wrote. “It’s inexcusable and I’m sorry to anyone I’ve hurt with this callous lack of fortitude. Heading to the hospital to have my brain weighed.”

Ten years of marriage and these two are still showing us how it’s done. Here’s hoping they continue to never change.

As much as we love Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively and want to obsessively follow every moment their adorable family experiences, they’re a notoriously private couple. In fact, it’s rare that we see them at all outside of public appearances to promote their work—and when it comes to their family, well, the couple has been known for not making public pregnancy or birth announcements, keeping names under wraps, and keeping their kids off social media almost entirely. And power to them! They deserve their privacy—for themselves and for their kids.

But that’s why it’s such a joy when they do give us an inside peek at their lives together, like Ryan Reynolds just did on Instagram. He shared the sweetest photo of himself, Santa, Mrs. Claus, and a very pregnant Lively decked out in some adorable Christmas jammies.

Even though the photo is objectively perfect, Reynolds obviously couldn’t resist trolling his wife, just a little bit.

“We met Jessica Claus and her husband on the Polar Express,” he wrote. “She was everything I’d always dreamed since I was a kid. She smelled like cinnamon buns and sangria.”

Funny, that’s what we imagine Lively is like.

While they weren’t included in the public photo, we imagine that Reynolds and Lively visited the Polar Express with their three daughters—seven-year-old James, six-year-old Inez, and three-year-old Betty—in tow. Lively is currently expecting baby number four for the couple, and Reynolds has opened up previously about how they don’t know if they’re expecting their first boy, or another daughter.

Holidays at Beverly Center

Now – Dec. 31: Beverly Center is doing it up this holiday season with lots of festive events for the family to enjoy. There will be a larger-than-life holiday display featuring a 35ft. tall tree, mirrored gifts boxes and light-up installations in the Grand Court area. Per usual, Santa will be on hand to take pics with the kiddos (and pets), along with live entertainment from holiday carolers, hip-hop Nutcracker dancers, a lead ballerina and a drag queen sugar cane fairy—obviously. Every Sun., a live DJ spins holiday tunes; on Dec. 8, there's holiday drag queen bingo; and on Dec. 19, there’s a fantastic Hanukkah celebration with music, arts and crafts, and traditional treats.

The Immersive Nutcracker: A Winter Miracle

Now – Dec. 31: From the producers of Immersive Van Gogh, comes a reimagined holiday tale that’s a feast for the senses this season. Bob Baker’s Nutcracker

Nov. 26 – Jan. 8: Is there any better childhood tradition in LA than Bob Baker’s marionette production of The Nutcracker? We think not! Holidays at Terranea Resort

Dec. 1 – Dec. 31: Whether you’re craving a cozy holiday getaway overlooking the Pacific or an easy day trip to one of the most stunning spots in SoCal, Terrenea is the ultimate holiday destination. Dec. 3: The Holiday Sing-Along at Walt Disney Concert Hall has long been a beloved tradition of Angelenos. Las Posadas on Olvera St.

Dec. 16 – Dec. 24: As one of LA’s oldest Christmas events, Las Posadas is an extra special experience. Seasonal entertainment commences nightly starting at 5 p.m. and includes a lovely candlelight procession starting at Avila Adobe at 7 p.m. The leaders of the march (who are usually little ones) dress as shepherds, angels, Mary and Joseph, and are followed by dozens of other worshippers. The procession strolls up and down Olvera Street singing songs in English and Spanish. They make stops at stores along the way requesting shelter but will be denied until they are eventually admitted and receive complimentary champurrado, pan dulce, and pinatas bursting in celebration.
