Dive into these must-read books perfect for vacation or anytime

Spring is here, the weather is getting warmer, and the dream of long beach days is on the horizon. Even if long beach days aren’t on your horizon, there is still the possibility of some long, wistful days spent with… a book. We’ve all heard the term “beach read,” and although its origin has never been pinpointed, there is a by-name association that beach read books are light, fluffy, and vacation-themed. We’d like to think they’re moving beyond that; to anything you can dive into and get lost in.

If your to-be-read list isn’t growing as quickly as usual, we’re here to help. Here are a bunch of books to dive into—from social commentaries that manage to be fun to good, old-fashioned love stories.

Self Care: A Novel by Leigh Stein

$11 BUY NOW

If you've ever scrolled through Instagram and wondered if wellness influencers really exist the way they do on screen in real life, Self Care by Leigh Stein is for you—because let's face it; we all know they don't. It's about two female cofounders of a wellness start-up. Maren Gelb is on a forced digital detox, thanks to a viral tweet that is not being very well received. Her partner, Devin Avery, is the outward projection of insufferable perfection, but inwardly—a mess. It's a quick, readable romp about reckoning with yourself when your "brand" is all about... self care.

Romantic Comedy is one of the best beach reads of 2023
Random House

Romantic Comedy: A Novel by Curtis Sittenfeld

$12 BUY NOW

Sally Milz is a sketch comedy writer for a show that airs every Saturday night. Sally's happy with her career and totally satisfied with the occasional random hook-up—let's just say she's kinda given up on her search for love. When one of her co-writers starts dating a glamorous actress who guest hosts the show, Sally wonders why random, totally mediocre men are constantly landing incredibly hot women way out of their league—and why the same doesn't seem to hold true for women. That is, until super-hot popstar Noah Brewster is the musical guest one week, and he and Sally immediately hit it off. Romantic Comedy is as much a relevant social commentary as it is a blast to read—and that's hard to pull off.

An opportunity brought to her by Cal Kirby, the "friend" that derailed her entire life. This manages to be a relatable story about being human, the choices we make, and the feelings we can't deny. Book the tickets and call the babysitter

Nothing says date night like dinner and a movie. And since you’ve seen every child-friendly release since your kids were born, here’s a list of movies for adults; to be seen in all their big-screen glory without a cartoon character in sight. And if you’re lucky, they’ll be shown at one of those theaters with the giant reclining chairs and a bar. Okay, maybe the chairs are a bad idea for exhausted parents, but may you find these showing in a theater you love, kick back with your favorite adult, and enjoy them without a kid telling you they need to go to the bathroom—again.

John Wick Chapter 4

Everyone loves Keanu, and there’s something so satisfying about watching him play a ruthless, vengeful hitman. Fans of the franchise have been waiting for Chapter 4—put on a two-year hiatus thanks to COVID. There are also rumors the last installment of the franchise won’t deliver a happy ending for its beloved main character.  March 24

Air

Air is a good date night movie.
Amazon Studios

The movie about how the iconic Air Jordan sneaker came to be is directed by Ben Affleck and is stacked with a star-studded cast, including Viola Davis, who Michael Jordan apparently insisted play his mother. Also starring Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Chris Tucker, and Affleck himself. April 5

Paint

Paint is a good date night movie.
IFC Films

This is sadly not a Bob Ross biopic, but Owen Wilson channels everyone’s favorite public television painter for his role in Paint. It’s a fictional comedy about Carl Nagle, a painter with a public television show who is worried when a younger, cooler painter starts to steal his spotlight. The movie is not based on any of Ross’ real-life experiences, but it’s clearly inspired by him, and because of that, we’re all in.  April 7

Sweetwater

Sweetwater is the story of Hall of Famer Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, who made history as the first Black basketball player to sign an NBA contract. He was the star player for the Harlem Globetrotters at the time. It stars Everett Osborne as Clifton, Jeremy Piven, Cary Elwes, and Richard Dreyfuss.  April 14

Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny

Who didn’t grow up with Indiana Jones? And who doesn’t want to see Harrison Ford revising his role as Jones for the first time since 2008? This is the first installment of the franchise not directed by Steven Spielberg and also stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Shaunette Renée Wilson, and Antonio Banderas.  June 30

Mission: Impossible, Dead Reckoning

Paramount Pictures

Tom Cruise has been playing Ethan Hunt, a member of a fictional spy agency called Mission Force, since 1996. 1996! His role kicked off a franchise lasting almost three decades, and 2023 sees the seventh installment of the franchise hitting the screen, with Hunt no doubt jumping off cliffs while keeping the world safe. There is reportedly a stunt in the upcoming film that involves riding a motorcycle off a cliff in Switzerland, then turning into a base jump. The footage above proves it.  July 14

Oppenheimer

Cillian Murphy stars as Robert J. Oppenheimer in this biopic about the physicist and “father of the atomic bomb.” The star-packed cast includes Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, and Josh Hartnett. Directed by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception, Memento).  July 21

Barbie

Barbie is a good date night movie.
Warner Bros.

This trailer looks like a pink fever dream, and we are so here for it. Margot Robbie plays Barbie and Ryan Gosling is cast as her beau, Ken. The film’s supporting cast includes more exciting actors, including Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, and everyone’s favorite Marvel superhero, Simu Liu, in yet-to-be-revealed roles.  July 21

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

The plot has been largely under wraps, but Deadline reported that Greece is the setting for Toula and Ian’s (John Corbett) daughter Paris’ wedding. The third film is dedicated to Michael Constantine (Toula’s father, Gus), who died in August 2021. It won’t be the same without Gus running around with his bottle of beloved Windex, but we can’t wait to see the sparks between Vardalos and Corbett again.  September 8

The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

The fourth installment of the franchise focuses on a young Coriolanus Snow (originally played by Donald Sutherland). It follows Snow’s involvement in the games and is set 64 years before the events in the original series—which means Jennifer Lawrence won’t be reprising her role as Katniss Everdeen.  November 17

Wonka

Warner Bros.

It’s about time we got an origin story for the most famously devious chocolatier of all time. Timothée Chalamet will play a young Willy Wonka, and we’ll reportedly see how he crossed paths with the Ooompa Loompas and ended up with his impressively creepy factory. Also starring Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, and Keegan-Michael Key.  December 15

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Apparently, during the filming of the first Aquaman, Jason Momoa developed a story pitch for a sequel, and thanks to the huge success of the movie, it was greenlighted. Momoa is set to return to the big screen on the biggest movie day of the year, with Amber Heard as Mera and Ben Affleck reprising his role as Batman. “When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.” Hopefully, the sequel will be just as jam-packed with slow-motion scenes of Aquaman emerging from the sea.  December 25

Legally Blonde 3

Reese Witherspoon will reprise her role as Elle Woods, and thank goodness, because who else could do this? The 2001 release brought us our favorite horoscope-obsessed, vegetarian law student who refused to let tired stereotypes and a remarkable jerk of an ex-boyfriend stand in her way of becoming a power lawyer. There’s no official release date yet, but the MGM site still says, “coming in 2023.”  TBD

Get ready to add Christmas With You to your holiday rom-com rotation so you can see Freddie Prinze Jr. in the role he was born to play: hot dad

There’s certainly no shortage of cheesy holiday movies to choose from. In fact, now that streaming giants like Netflix have joined Hallmark and Lifetime to produce as many holiday-themed rom-coms as possible during the winter months, there are almost too many—how can one cheesy romance lover possibly watch them all? (Here’s a good place to start!) So when you’re making your watch list for this year, make sure Netflix’s newest offering makes the cut. Christmas With You stars Freddie Prinze Jr. as a hot single dad, and that’s something you aren’t going to want to miss.

Prinze, who starred as a teenage heartthrob in just about every movie millennials grew up on, has never played a dad before. This Netflix movie, which has him starring as a single, music-loving dad who falls in love with his daughter’s favorite pop star, seems like the perfect way for Prinze to try out a new type of role. Plus, as a real-life dad, he has plenty of experience to draw on.

“When my daughter was born, I walked away from the business and became a full-time dad,” he explained. “That was my main priority.”

That meant that, even though he got plenty of offers over the years, Prinze turned down roles in rom-coms—until now.

“It wasn’t until my daughter took an interest in performing that my wife and I decided to take a more active role in our careers and show her what we think is important to succeed in this business,” said Prinze, who shares his two children with actress Sarah Michelle Gellar. “To do a romantic comedy, there has to be something different. Otherwise, it would be very hard for me to get excited. Otherwise, I just want to make a horror movie, because that’s kind of my favorite type of film. But Miguel was a father, and this was [the] first opportunity I had to be a father in a movie.”

Prinze also explained how acting—especially in a role where he plays a dad—has changed as his kids have gotten old enough to watch his films.

“My daughter’s 13 and old enough to get all the messages,” he said. “That scene with myself and Deja Monique Cruz [who plays Cristina] was special. Miguel’s letting Cristina know how proud he is of her, and how her mother would’ve been proud of her. That was a big scene for me. I remember being nervous about it. It was the only time I’ve been nervous since I Know What You Did Last Summer. I would prep that scene over and over. I wanted it to be perfect.”

Christmas With You is currently streaming on Netflix, so look no further for a movie to watch ASAP to help you get in the holiday rom-com spirit.

Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, and Po are back!

If you are a fan of Teletubbies and have been hoping for its eventual return, your wait is almost over. Netflix announced the show in its fall lineup of children’s programming, promising a “21st-century refresh,” which will be airing soon. This week they released the first trailer for the series reboot, and let’s just say it’s still weird as heck.

Teletubbies, which started on BBC in the late 1990s and aired on PBS Kids in the U.S in its original form until 2001, followed Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, and Po, four alien-like children who danced their way around grassy meadows and into our living rooms. Each has TV screens for bellies and nightmare-inducing antennas that protrude from the tops of their heads, but they seem to capture kid’s hearts with their constant, incoherent blabbering. If that gives parents a few moments of peace to make coffee and stare out the window, we consider this new revival a win.

According to the press release, each of the 12 new episodes will include a new and original “Tummy Tales” song “that will have the entire family dancing along,” so you have that to look forward to each morning.

The show did have a brief revival in the U.S. 2014 on Nick Jr. in November 2015, but it went off-air again in 2018, so it’s the first time a new generation of kids will be introduced to the colorful group. If parents want to get a taste of the new Teletubbies, look no further than their Twitter account, a wild trip where they stan every pop star with reckless abandon.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Tituss Burgess is on board to be the show’s new narrator. With five Primetime Emmy Award nominations for that show, he’s bound to inject something special into this one. If that’s not enough good news, there will also be a new Sun Baby to look forward to—you’re welcome.

Netflix

The Teletubbies performers will be Rachelle Beinart, Rebecca Hyland, Nick Chee Ping Kellington, and Jeremiah Krage. Tummy Tales will be hosted by Julia Pulo.

Mark your calendars for November 14, when the first show will become available on the streaming service.

While the pandemic is slowly starting to wane, everyone is still recovering from two years worth of quite the emotional toll. Luckily, access to mental health services has become much more available, and Justin Bieber wants to help.

The pop star has just announced he is partnering with BetterHelp, an online therapy site seeking to provide accessible therapy services to everyone. Bieber, who is starting the first wave of his Justice tour for his sixth album, realizes the impact the pandemic has made on everyone, especially the touring industry. The partnership started out as a way to offer his 250+ person crew access to mental health services, but it didn’t stop there.

Now, Bieber is giving access to his fans to the same services, for up to one month. He tells Billboard, “The one thing I’ve learned over the years is that we all go through our ups and downs, and we all need help sometimes. Being able to offer access to free therapy to my fans and tour family is a real blessing, and I’m humbled to be able to do it.”

The services from BetterHelp can be used for Bieber’s fans or they can share with friends or family. To cover the initiative, the counseling website has committed $3M for services.

Collaborating with the online therapy site was an easy decision for Bieber, who is open about his own mental health as he navigates being in the spotlight since he was a child. In an interview with Billboard from 2021 he remembers some of the difficult times and shares, “I also have done the work to know why I was making those decisions. I know where that pain was coming from, that caused me to act the way I was acting.”

To access the free month, head to betterhelp.com/justinbieber and click the “get started” button. The offer is only good for fans who’ve never used BetterHelp before, and you will be prompted to enter your credit card info to “prevent misuse.” The site also notes it may take up to a week to be matched with a therapist.
