Who doesn’t love a doughnut? There’s nothing quite like starting a day that is sure to be filled with play, with a tasty morning treat. Whether you call them doughnuts or donuts, prefer them round or bar-shaped, chocolate or plain, cake or classic—there’s no wrong way to enjoy these treats for breakfast. And Portland offers a treasure trove of yummy goodness for every taste bud (including vegan ones!). Read on for our top picks!

Blue Star Donuts

Gorgeous treats in trendy flavors like Blueberry Bourbon Basil, or Passion Fruit Cocoa Nib, these large brioche-style treats ousted Voodoo from it’s top popularity spot a few years ago. Now stretching into the PDX Airport and even Southern California, the seven Portland locations are still a great place to take visiting family. Kiddos will demand their own (huge) donut, so get them in less envelope-pushing flavors like Chocolate Crunch, Cinnamon Sugar, or even good ol’ Original Glaze.

Secret tip: while it’s not as photo-worthy as the others, try the apple cider fritter—it’s a delicious apple-studded taste bomb with a satisfying fried crunch!

Annie's Donuts

If you’re unimpressed by a flashy glaze or wild new flavor, hurry to Annie’s where the iconic sign is waiting with a promise of Old Portland. Inside, you won’t find a lot of space, but you will find maple bars, crullers, and glazed or cream-filled fried doughnuts that are simple and delicious. It’s what you expect from a place that’s been in the neighborhood forever, satisfying those who just want a darn good doughnut.

Voodoo Doughnuts

Though competition in the Rose City is rising, Portland’s classic titillating doughnut shop still slings their wild treats every day. Kids will love the cereal-covered raised ones, with Fruit Loops, Captain Crunch, or Cocoa Puffs. Or maybe the Memphis Mafia, a banana fritter dripping in chocolate sauce and peanut butter.

Flavors include cinnamon sugar, honey, bacon, and everyone’s favorite: gooey nutella. They’re perfect for little mouths—the small size makes it easy to treat everyone without committing to an overload of sugar. And for parents, the house-made chai blends are a delicious touch. The line at their Fremont storefront may stretch outside, but it moves fast, and tables clear out regularly. Peek down the hall near the counter for some storybooks and activities to keep the little ones busy while you wait.

Joe's Donut Shop

Native Portlanders have been going here since 1974, swinging by the red and white checkered hut to load up on maple bars, fritters, and old-fashioneds before a day on the mountain. Nothing beats those bear claws and a cup of hot coffee in the morning! All made fresh, they’re best eaten that same day (though that won’t be a problem).

Nothing sounds better in the summer than a cold scoop (or two, or three) of ice cream! With National Ice Cream Day coming up on July 18, Instacart decided to research the most popular flavors in the nation. Although vanilla is a perennial favorite, Americans had quite the range of flavor preferences!

Using purchase data, Instacart determined a top flavor for each state. The results? Moose Tracks, which features fudge, peanut butter cups and vanilla ice cream, took home the most popular flavor, coming out on top in 12 states. In a tight race for second place, Rocky Road, Green Tea, Coffee and Birthday Cake finished in a four-way tie.

The four corners of the country all had their distinctive loyalties. In the Pacific Northwest, Green Tea reigned supreme. In the Southwest, Rocky Road was the overwhelming favorite. In the Northeast, Coffee dominated and in the Southeast, Rum Raisin was the winner.

The Midwest overwhelmingly preferred Moose Tracks and a few states had unique favorites. Delaware preferred Cherry, Pennsylvania screamed for Mint Chip and New Mexico bought pints on pints of Chocolate Chocolate Chip.

No matter what flavor you prefer, you’re in good company. The average American consumes more than 22 pounds of ice cream and frozen desserts each year and July 18 is the perfect excuse for a chilly treat! If you want to try your hand making it at home to celebrate the upcoming holiday, we’re here to help.

Fred Rogers Lives on in New PBS “Donkey Hodie” Series

You spent years away from the work-outside-the-home employment market—but that doesn’t mean you lazed on a chaise and ate cookies all day. Instead, you became the CEO of your household, organizing schedules, orchestrating all-day adventures and so, so, so, so much more.

Now, LinkedIn is acknowledging all the major skills you amped up while at home. The online networking platform just added new job titles—and now you can include stay-at-home mom in your online resume.

Photo: Julia M Cameron via Pexels

In the new job title upgrade last week, the professional social networking site added caretaker titles that include homemaker, stay-at-home mom, stay-at-home dad and stay-at-home parent. The changes will hopefully de-stigmatize time spent at home for a variety of reasons as parents seek to re-enter the workforce.

While the caretaker job title addition is a major upgrade to note, it isn’t the change LinkedIn recently made. The site also introduced an optional field at the top of user profile page to add your own preferred gender pronouns. Along with the new titles, LinkedIn also ditched the requirement to link all resume job titles to employers.

Is your baby bilingual? Whether they learn one language or two, new research shows babies prefer infant-direct speech (a.k.a. baby talk) over mature adult communications.

Research from UCLA’s Language Acquisition Lab and 16 other global speech labs looked at infants’ interest levels when they were exposed to two different languages. The study, published in the journal Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science, took place across four continents and included 333 bilingual and 384 monolingual babies ages six to nine months and 12 to 15 months.

photo: Filipe Leme via Pexels

Megha Sundara, a UCLA linguistics professor and director of the Language Acquisition Lab said, “Crucially for parents, we found that development of learning and attention is similar in infants, whether they’re learning one or two languages.” Sundara added, “And, of course, learning a language earlier helps you learn it better, so bilingualism is a win-win.”

The researchers asked the parent participants to hold their babies as infant-direct speech (baby talk) or adult-directed speech was played from speakers coming from either the right or left direction. To assess interest, the researchers measured the length of time the infant looked toward the direction of the sound. As it turns out, both bilingual and monolingual babies prefer baby talk to parent-speech.

Victoria Mateu, a UCLA assistant professor of Spanish and Portuguese, said of the results, “The longer they looked, the stronger their preference.” Mateu continued, “Babies tend to pay more attention to the exaggerated sounds of infant-directed speech.”

If you’re wondering why both bilingual and monolingual infants might prefer baby talk, Mateu said, “Baby talk has a slower rate of speech across all languages, with more variable pitch, and it’s more animated and happy.”

8 Eggcellent Science Experiments You Can Do This Spring

Miscarriage is quite common, yet regardless of that simple truth, it remains a challenging and emotionally complex experience for women to navigate. It is often something women deal with privately with their partner, but fortunately some women in the public spotlight have begun to share their experiences more openly.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, recently opened up about her miscarriage last summer, paving the way for women everywhere to connect and feel less alone. She and Prince Harry also announced that they are expecting another child (a baby girl)—a great reminder that pregnancy is very possible after miscarriage.

Whether you are dealing with loss due to a miscarriage yourself, acting as a support person to someone who has experienced this loss, or simply wanting to educate yourself about this all-too-common occurrence, here is a Q&A to help you through this process.

Miscarriage: 7 Questions and Answers

1. What is a miscarriage? Miscarriage is defined as a pregnancy loss prior to 20 weeks. If the pregnancy lasts beyond 20 weeks but is unsuccessful, it is termed stillbirth.

2. Am I to blame for my baby’s death? Miscarriage is traumatic for all pregnant women and their partners. If you have had, are having, or will have a miscarriage, remember this: Miscarriage is NOT your fault.

Inherent in miscarriage is the experience of death, and often feelings of failure as well. This death is very real, and it is normal for women and partners to experience the five stages of grieving and guilt (described in Elizabeth Keebler Ross’s landmark research in “On Death and Dying”):

  • Denial (It didn’t happen.)
  • Anger (Why is this happening to me?)
  • Bargaining (Oh, please God, I’ll do anything to have a successful pregnancy.)
  • Depression (I must have done something wrong.)
  • Acceptance (I have to get on with life one way or another.)

Allowing yourself and your partner to go through this grieving process is the most important part of a miscarriage.

3. How soon can I get pregnant again after a miscarriage? I always suggest waiting for at least one regular period before getting pregnant again. It can then be determined with more accuracy when you are due. In addition, having a normal period signals your body is done with the miscarriage process.

4. Who is likely to miscarry? Anyone can miscarry. The most often quoted numbers say 10-to-20 percent of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. When the miscarriage rate includes those fetuses lost before the missing of a period, the high-end rate increases up to 40 percent.

5. How do I tell a period from a miscarriage? There is cramping with miscarriage, often like a period, but sometimes more severe. Most of the time, bleeding will be heavier than a period, but seldom requiring a blood transfusion.

6. What if my doctor can’t hear a heartbeat? With a Doppler, I can hear a heartbeat at about 11 or 12 weeks. It is easier to see the heartbeat with an ultrasound at seven to eight weeks. If I can’t see the heartbeat at seven or eight weeks, out of reverence and concern for the fetus, I recheck in one week. If I can’t hear a heartbeat, most women prefer to wait for a spontaneous miscarriage which usually follows after one or two weeks. If one or two weeks go by without a miscarriage, I recommended misoprostol (Cytotec) by mouth.

While it is possible to use misoprostol without waiting the two weeks for a spontaneous miscarriage, it would not be my first choice because aggressive treatment can interfere with the grieving process. I prefer to allow a wide margin around guilt, blame, and shame.

7. What happens when someone has repeated miscarriages? Miscarriage, before there is a beating heart, is common, and is usually a chromosomal mutation. These are not preventable. However, once the heart is beating, several conditions can lead to a miscarriage. Many of these repeated miscarriages are preventable. If you have had more than two miscarriages, it’s time to look at the list of treatable conditions that are known to contribute to miscarriage in some women (i.e., Strep B or methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase—MTFHR).

The keys here are remembering that you are not alone in experiencing miscarriage, and that is normal and healthy to grieve your loss. In cases where repeated miscarriage occurs, your doctor may be able to help you isolate the condition that is causing it so you can go on to have a healthy pregnancy.
