This SNL Macy’s Ad parody should be required yearly holiday viewing

You’re not the only parent dreading holiday outfit season—and Saturday Night Live is here to prove it. In this classic short, which should be required viewing by moms and dads every year, SNL parodies a Macy’s Christmas clothing sale commercial, revealing what everyone really thinks about those not-so-comfy kids’ clothes—and maybe about their spouses, too. This one’s NSFK (Not Safe for Kids) so watch it when you’ve got 2 minutes to yourself. LOL.

While you’re at it, keep the SNL hits coming with viewings of “I Got a Robe,” the forever mom holiday anthem, and the “Best Christmas Ever” skit, in which Matt Damon and Cecily Strong flashback to the hot mess that was their supposedly “perfect” and “magical” day.

After opening with men’s blazers and women’s cashmere sweaters, the faux ad kicks up the comedy as the voiceover says, “And for your little ones, Macy’s has the best of fashions that will have them saying…” Here’s where the cute kiddos go full-on into pure Christmas-time tantrums. One little girl stomps up and down, shouting, “It’s too hot!” A boy snarks, “It itches,” and a baby—well, the half-dressed tot just cries (how we feel this in our bones).

The mock-mercial previews just about every rewarding experience that awaits you, including, “wrestling your wiggly little monster into winter clothes” and “Merino sweaters that won’t fit over his head.” The parody goes on to advertise “hard, shiny shoes that hurt,” “all holiday rompers she’ll never get off in time,” “kids’ jackets so big and thick, they won’t fit in their car seats anymore,” “snow boots that are so hard to put on it will strain your marriage,” and, of course, “shirts with the wrong Frozen princess.”

If you’re in the heat of the holiday hustle, we suggest that you take a break and watch this so you can laugh-cry about the fun, festive tradition.

Did you know that Mickey Mouse wasn’t Walt Disney’s first cartoon?

Ever wanted to know some wild facts about the happiest place on Earth? Whether you’re a lifelong Disney lover or not, we think you’ll find these Disney facts pretty compelling. Plus, trivia for kids is always a fun way to entertain! These fascinating facts about Disney are sure to wow your young Mouseketeers and maybe even inspire a Disney trivia for kids-themed game night.

1. Mickey might be the most famous mouse in the world, but Walt Disney’s first cartoon character was actually a rabbit named Oswald.

2. Covering 25,000 acres or 43 square miles, the Walt Disney World Resort is about the same size as San Francisco, so make sure you pack your walking shoes!

3. The iconic spaghetti scene in Lady and the Tramp almost didn’t make it into the movie because Walt didn’t think it would work. Luckily he changed his mind after seeing a ruff cut.

4. Cats roam around Disneyland at night. The helpful felines keep the mice (other than Mickey and Minnie) at bay.

5. The Buy-N-Large or BNL logo from the mega-corporation made famous in Wall-E appears in several other Pixar films. For example, Buzz Lightyear’s batteries are BNL brand.

6. If you’re walking down Main Street and you suddenly crave popcorn, blame the scent machines. The Disney Smellitizer (a machine patented by Disney Imagineering) emits different scents throughout the theme parks.

7. Mickey and Minnie are married in real life! Wayne Anthony Allwine, who voiced Mickey for over three decades, married Russi Taylor, who played Minnie.

8. Though it was only utilized in a handful of scenes, The Little Mermaid was the first Disney film to incorporate Pixar’s computer animation process. (BONUS: Walt had the idea for this film as far back as the late 1930s)

9. Sleeping Beauty Castle was not designed with Princess Aurora in mind. It went through several themes, including a Medieval castle, Robin Hood’s castle, and even Snow White’s castle. It was finally named for the slumbering royal to promote the release of the upcoming film.

10. Lilo and Stitch features more original Elvis Presley songs than any of the King’s own films.

19. Hidden Mickeys are sprinkled throughout the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World, see if you can spot them!

22. The sorcerer in Fantasia is named ‘Yen Sid,’ see if you can decipher where that came from (Hint: Read it backward!).

The original voice of the video game Mario and Luigi will have a cameo in the new film!

Get your coin-collecting, cart-racing selves ready because Illumination has just dropped the final Super Mario Bros. movie trailer. The animated film, which hits theaters on Apr. 5th, looks to be a ride through a thrilling new universe based on the classic ’80s Nintendo game that had kids guiding two Italian plumbers through the toadstool world of Princess Peach and Bowser.

In this new, animated version, Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi are working on a water main when they’re transported to a magical world via a mysterious pipe. When the two are separated, Mario sets off on a quest to find his brother. He’ll team up with well-known characters in the battle against Bowser and his Koopa Troop. The star-studded cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Seth Rogen (who’s been all over the animated world as of late) as Donkey Kong.

The first Super Mario Bros. movie trailer had everyone talking about how different it was from the ’90s live-action version

While the video game is one of the most popular of all time, unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the disastrous 1993 film that is easily one of the worst movies ever made—and that’s according to the film’s director! Things are about to turn around for Mario and Luigi, however, as their story has landed in the magical hands of Illumination.

“I like that this was not done well the first time,” producer Chris Meledandri told Variety. “I think that’s more exciting or more worthy than simply making another version of a film that was done incredibly well, to begin with.”

Melendandri also explained that he planned to work closely with the game’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, on developing the film. The 1993 version did not involve Miyamoto at all, and Melendandri believes that was a huge mistake. The new Super Mario Bros. Movie is a true collaboration, as Miyamoto is listed as a co-producer of the film and worked with Melendandri for over six years on the project. If the trailer is any indication, it’s clear that this one won’t miss the mark.

These fun and festive menorahs from Amazon are adding some extra twinkle to your Hanukkah celebrations this year

Hanukkah 2022 starts a little bit later—December 18th to be exact—but it’ll be here before we know it. And no Festival of Lights is complete without a menorah. We’ve found some fantastic menorahs—where else?—on Amazon to light up your celebration.

Quick brush up on your Hanukkah history:

How well do you know your Hanukkah history? Let’s get a little refresher out of the way.

Firstly, the word menorah means “lamp” in Hebrew. The ancient menorah had seven branches, and was an “everlasting light”, an oil lamp meant to never go out in the temple in the area that was known as Judea. At the time—167 B.C.E.—the small area of then-Judea was caught in conflict. The Egyption Empire and the Greek-Assyrian Empire clashed and Greek king Antiochus outlawed all Jewish practices. The observance of the Sabbath, keeping kosher were eliminated and the temple where the menorah burned was desecrated.

A small group of Jewish rebels, known as the Maccabees, were able to take back the temple over the course of several years. The menorah was relit. As the story goes, despite having only a single day’s worth of oil, the menorah miraculously lasted for eight days. Accordingly, the modern-day menorah has nine candles: one for each of those eight days and one to light the rest. Hanukkah marks the rededication of the desecrated temple of Judea when it was taken back by the Maccabees

So, now that you know why the menorah is such an important element of Hanukkah, we can get to the roundup of some of our favorite ones. These menorahs are not only unique, fun, pretty, and festive, but can be found on Amazon because we love convenience. They’re a great option for keeping with tradition while at the same time, creating a holiday aesthetic that’s perfect for your own vibes. So get ready for eight nights of celebration with our menorahs from Amazon roundup!

Visit the Arizona Boardwalk

Home to Butterfly Wonderland and OdySea Aquarium, plus a dinosaur exhibit, a selfie museum, indoor playgrounds and even a mirror maze, it’s easy to spend a whole day here.

Pro tip: buy your OdySea Aquarium and Butterfly Wonderland tickets together to save a few bucks. You can exit and reenter throughout the day if you need to leave to grab a bite to eat.

Butterfly Wonderland

One of the biggest butterfly conservatories in North America, you’ll be welcomed by birds, collections of unique butterflies and walls filled with artwork. Walk into the emergence room, where you’ll observe live chrysalis turning into butterflies. Once you enter the butterfly habitat, watch over 70 species fly amongst the trees, flowers and Koi pond. Wander around as the butterflies move through the warm sun and see if you can spot the two chickens who call the space home. On the way out, wander through the other exhibits—you’ll observe rainforest reptiles, see a honey bee extravaganza and a horn shark tank.

OdySea Aquarium

You’ll enter Arizona’s biggest aquarium via The Rivers of the World, which displays the flora and fauna that thrive in freshwater rivers all over the world. You’ll also be able to see American Alligators, the Macaws, Toucans and a two-toed sloth. Kids can stroke a stingray at Stingray Shore, explore a tide pool and watch penguins play at Penguin Point. For your tiniest ocean explorers, there’s a water table near the cafe with doors and panels used to re-direct water over and over again.

When you’re ready to go below the water’s surface, take an escalator down into the depths of the ocean and watch sea turtles, leopard sharks and other deep-sea fish swim in an immense saltwater habitat. When you hit the ocean floor, explore the Bizzare & Beautiful exhibit, where you’ll find a crab and kelp forest, a lobster tank and other unique species.

The Reef Jewels exhibit (home of the Great Barrier Reef tunnel)  has the most colorful residents, and our favorite gallery is the OdySea Voyager. You'll board the “OdySea” submarine and be transported through a series of tanks while learning about the sea turtles, stingrays, sharks and the California Sea Lions that live in the aquarium.

There are over 50,000 desert plants in this botanical garden. After you’ve admired the famous Saguaro cacti and walked the wildflower trail loop (be on the lookout for three different types of hummingbirds) head for the Habitats of the Sonoran Desert. Follow the trail through five unique desert environments, which include models of Apache and Akimel O’odham households, Mesquite corrals, a Chaparral habitat and more. For families with kids ages 12 and under, the jewel of the garden is the Cactus Clubhouse, where visitors can enjoy the 8,000 square foot outdoor space filled with unstructured play materials like wood blocks, mud kitchens, balance beams and more.

A highlight of the park is the model train building, where kids of all ages will be wowed by the incredible miniature train layouts. There’s plenty to do in Old Town! Ride the trolley for free, look for the outdoor art installations, admire the Old West historic buildings, shop in Old Town Candy & Toys and grab a bite at Hula’s Modern Tiki. You can walk to the restaurant from anywhere in Old Town, it’s casual, and the menu is impressive. Kids will love the crispy fish bites and mac and cheese, and you’ll enjoy the Hawaiian ceviche and shrimp tacos. If you’re in the mood for a cocktail, order the Hula’s Mai Tai. For dessert, a stop at The Sugar Bowl is a must. Open since 1958, if there’s a more classic diner still serving up American fare like tuna melts, grilled cheese, hamburgers, and turkey sandwiches, we haven’t found it. Get a sundae at the authentic soda fountain and play games in the arcade room.

Go Hiking in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve

There are over 30,000 acres to explore in this preserve, so it’s hard to know which trail is best for families. We recommend the Gateway Trail Loop for families with older kids; it’s a 4.5-mile loop with moderate elevation and plenty of wildlife. For younger kids, try the Kovach Family Nature Trail, located off the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead. There are signs to help little ones engage with parents in nature, and it’s ADA accessible, making it ideal for wheelchairs and strollers.

Eat

Gabby Cullen

There are over 800 restaurants in Scottsdale, so whatever you’re craving, you’ll probably be able to find it. Offering an open floor plan, community tables and great food, Campo Italian Bistro & Bar is one of our favorites. The pickled veggies and roasted beet salad are wonderful starters. The Spaghetti Cacio de Pepe is perfection, and the kids will love the wood-fired pizza, house-made pickles and Stracchino cheese. If you’re able to sneak away for an adults-only dinner or if you have older kids, don’t leave Scottsdale without eating at The Mission. Located in Old Town, chef Matt Carter has been pleasing diners with his modern Latin cuisine since 2008. The grilled street corn appetizer is delicious, as is the white bean puree. Vegetarians will be thrilled with the butternut squash tacos, and don’t miss the opportunity to have one of their famous margaritas. Mowry & Cotton is also a wonderful dining experience. Located at the Phoenician, you can eat here even if you aren’t staying at the resort. There is indoor and outdoor dining, and the menu is family friendly, with both upscale menu items like butternut squash soup and miso-glazed halibut and kid-approved fare like cheese flatbread, grilled chicken and chicken and waffles.

Stay

The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess

There's a reason that families flock to the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. This hotel has huge rooms, pools and restaurants around every corner and loads of activities to keep the kids busy and the parents relaxed. You can make s’mores, pan for gold, play dodgeball and take nature walks around the property.

Perhaps the best kid feature at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is their Trailblazers Recreation Center. They offer a drop-off kids club daily from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for kids from 5-12. It is free until 11:30 a.m. for hotel guests, and kids who stay until 1 p.m. receive lunch for a $15 fee.

Head here in the afternoon to ride on the virtual reality game (ages seven and up), play a game of ping pong or meet the resident bearded dragon named Skittles. Trailblazers is also a great spot to grab pool floaties and goggles. Join in special events like catch-and-release fishing derbies for an additional fee.

The Phoenician

As you approach this AAA Five Diamond hotel, you’ll feel the power of Camelback Mountain. Nestled at the base of the mountain, and surrounded by the Sonoran Desert, the hotel is luxurious without feeling fussy, and families feel at home here. Several pools span different tiers, and there’s one area just for kids, complete with a splash pad, playground and even a 197 ft. twisting waterslide. The rooms are generous, with beautiful views of the pools, and there’s an impressive game room with arcade games, pool tables and shuffleboard. If that’s not enough entertainment, be sure to check out the dozens of activities that take place throughout the year, like family candy bingo, donut decorating, outdoor games and crafts.

While it’s not open at this time, when it does re-open, you can check your kids into the Funician club. For kids ages 5-12, there’s a fish tank, board games, a bearded dragon, a full-sized LEGO wall and hours of activities for all-day fun.

Outdoor Birthday Party Ideas for NYC Kids

It’s time to book that Disney trip to California: the nighttime spectaculars are back! Returning this spring, the “Main Street Electrical Parade,” “Disneyland Forever” fireworks spectacular, “World of Color” and “Fantasmic!” are all making a comeback to the Disneyland Resort, and we can’t wait.

Not only is Disney lighting up the sky and Main Street with the classic shows we know and love, a few surprises await as well. In particular, when the “Main Street Electrical Parade” returns on Apr. 22, 2022 for it’s 50th anniversary it will have a brand new grand finale.

Disney

Now as the parade comes to a conclusion, guests will be treated to more than a dozen Disney Animation and Pixar stories, which includes Encanto (and hopefully Bruno). Other faves include The Jungle Book, Raya and the Last Dragon, Aladdin, Coco, Mulan, Brave, The Princess and the Frog and more. And as always, each will be represented  “In thousand of sparkling lights and electro-synthe-magnetic musical sounds.”

With the new floats, the parade is now one of the longest and most gorgeous in the 50-year history, where you’ll get an extra seven segments and 118 feet of non-stop gorgeousness.

Disney

“Main Street Electrical Parade” and “Disneyland Forever” return to Disneyland on Apr. 22, 2022 for for a limited time at Disneyland Park. “Disneyland Forever” fireworks spectacular will only run Friday through Sunday, while “Mickey’s Mix Magic” will run Monday through Thursday until late spring. Come summer, you can catch “Disneyland Forever” nightly in the summer.

“World of Color” opens at Disney California Adventure on Apr. 22, 2022 and will run on its normal schedule, alongside “Fantasmic!” when it returns to Disneyland on May 28, 2022.

So much magic, so little time!

Disneyland’s Toontown Is Getting an Upgrade: Here’s the First Look

Teaching young children how to handle their finances pays huge dividends (pun 100% intended) both now and in the future. Not sure how to craft age-appropriate lessons for your squad? We interviewed four financial professionals and came up with a list of 10 money skills that deliver the biggest bang for your buck. Read on for all the details.

1. Use Everyday Moments to Talk about Money

Photo by Gustavo Fring from Pexels

"It's important to have regular conversations about money management while your child is still young to push them towards positive financial outcomes in early adulthood," advises Jennifer Seitz, Educational Content Lead at Greenlight and Certified Financial Education Instructor (CFEI).

Make it make 'cents': Seitz suggests parents "Look for practical daily examples of spending and budgeting and share them with your child; for example, when you take your child grocery shopping, you can pull out your card for the cashier and then ask your child, "Do you know what type of card this is? Is it a credit card or a debit card?"

This creates a learning opportunity to explain how debit cards take money directly from your bank account, while credit cards have a balance that must be paid each month. It's not free money or magic money—help your child understand how it works!"

2. Talk about Wants vs. Needs

mom daughter computer online school virtual elearning
Photo by August de Richelieu from Pexels

We need air, food, water, shelter and clothing. While your crew might beg to differ, we don't need toy cars or princess crowns. Needs are the things we buy before we buy the things we want.

Make it make 'cents': Together with the kiddo, grab a bunch of old magazines and coupon mailers, cut out different pictures, and glue them on a sheet of paper so that you have a collage of wants and a collage of needs.

3. Pay Kids for Unusual Tasks

Photo by Amina Filkins from Pexels

How nice would it be to get paid for making your bed, folding clothes or cutting your grass? Alas, it's not the case, so why do we lead kids on with chore-driven allowance? Consider giving them cash for extra work that they don't usually do (i.e., helping cook dinner or washing the family pet).

Make it make 'cents': Charge your mini-money makers with organizing a bake sale to earn extra money. They'll have a blast setting up shop and get a taste of what it's like to have a job.

4. Demonstrate the Wonder of Compound Interest

Photo by Ben White on Unsplash

Tom Byrum, Sr. Director, Head of Global Sales Compensation at a Fortune 500 company, uses a hands-on approach to get his child excited about saving money. "I'm paying my 10-year-old daughter an exorbitant monthly interest rate on her savings to illustrate the time value of money. She had fun calculating how much her $37 would grow at 10 percent interest per day for 30 days (no, that's not what I'm paying). She kept guessing how much she thought it would be and passed her guess two cycles later."

Make it make 'cents': Even the smallest fry can learn this lesson if you make it visual. Arm yourself with a roll of pennies and a Mason jar so your preschooler can see how quickly the change builds up.

5. Explain the Different Types of Money

Sharon McCutcheon via Unsplash

There are coins, paper bills, paper checks, debit and credit cards–and you use them all at different times for purchases. The idea of monetary variety is a hard one to grasp for the under 10 set, especially when you can buy things with "invisible money" (aka credit cards). And let's not even get started on the difference between a checking and a savings account.

Rod Griffin, Senior Director of Public Education and Advocacy at Experian, advises parents to "...help their children develop good financial habits by teaching them the difference between a checking and savings account and how banks store funds. Take a trip to the bank as a teaching experience and deposit or cash a check."

Make it make 'cents': Make "invisible" money visible. Set one person up as the bank and have your kid "pay" for items around the house with a debit card. The bank person should then take the money out of the bank and give it to you.

6. Talk about Credit Cards

Frankie Cordoba via Unsplash

"Without the proper knowledge of best practices, credit cards can lead to a lot of trouble for adults, both young and old," says Griffin. "Parents should teach children what credit cards are and how to use them wisely. Going through a credit card statement can go a long way in helping children understand the cause and effect of using credit cards, the importance of making on-time payments and how it can impact their credit score."

Make it make 'cents': Role play the difference between making a purchase with good credit vs. bad credit. Kids with good credit can buy a popsicle for $2, while those with low scores get charged $6. If you have more than one child, we suggest giving everyone the same credit score, so you don't start a mutiny.

7. Teach Kids to Budget and Plan for Their Needs

iStock

Ashraf Jaffer, Adjunct Accounting Professor at the University of North Carolina, has been doing this since her son was five years old. "He has a budget from birthday and holiday money. When he was younger, we would give him the prices of things he wanted. He would come up with a combination of things that would fit within his budget (which is a great way to incorporate math lessons). Now that he is older, we ask him to research prices and come up with a proposal and justification. The final decision is with us, but he feels he is more in control and participates in the decision process."

Make it make 'cents': Print out a calendar and pencil in planned family trips, holidays and special occasions. Ask your child to set aside spending money for each event before budgeting for immediate wants.

8. Don't Fudge the Budget

Photo by RODNAE Productions from Pexels

"Stick to the budget and do not exceed it even if your kid's argument for spending more is great," advises Jaffer. "They will learn to prioritize spending needs and patience if you don't give in and increase the budget."

We know, we know—easier said than done. But the sooner kids understand that they can't buy things if they don't have enough money, the better.

Make it make 'cents': Create and label four money jars: "spend," "save," "share," and "invest." It's up to your kiddo to decide where the money goes. Another fun way to practice budgeting? Play Monopoly!

9. Model Charitable Giving

iStock

Kids have great examples of $$$-stingy characters—think Scrooge, who no matter how much money he has, hoards it all to himself. Giving (even the smallest amount) to those who have less is a fundamental money lesson that naturally empathetic kids can enjoy.

Make it make 'cents': Together, research and choose one charity to donate money to each month.

10. Reinforce Positive Money Choices

A teacher high fives a student in class
iStock

“Talk about their successes and reward them,” says Seitz. “Did they decide against buying something they didn’t really need? Smart move! Explain that now they can use the money for something else, which is that core money principal: opportunity cost. Did they choose to save their birthday money for an important big-ticket item? Tell them how proud you are! And why learning to save is so important as they grow up and become financially independent.”

Make it make 'cents': Be as specific as possible in your praise to really solidify the lesson. The more your little one feels warm and fuzzy about their financially responsible decisions, the better.
