Now there are plenty of kid-friendly Portland restaurants with outdoor seating that includes heat. 1. Produce Row Cafe

Solidifying their reputation for satisfying national and international craft brews, diverse whiskeys and an enticing atmosphere since 1978 The Row is home to one of the best open-air heated patios in Portland. You’ll find more than wooden picnic tables for your little diners to prop up at, and a decorative maple tree planter and a concrete-paver patio covered with a clear vinyl dome. Heaters are strategically placed and will keep little bodies warm. The Row’s fresh, American-style lunch and dinner fare is seasonal, with options that will delight all ages.

2. Stormbreaker Brewing

Their two locations, one in St Johns and one on Mississippi, were both approved to take over their local streets, so you’ll be able to enjoy plenty of tables at either spot. You’ll find a traditional taproom menu of great burgers, sandwiches, fish’n’chips, and chicken tenders. Award-winning beer included.

3. La Buca

This sweet neighborhood cafe on 28th and Burnside serves up great Italian food with a friendly staff. 4. Oaks Bottom Cafe

Located in the heart of Sellwood, this neighborhood public house is not only grown-up friendly but kid-friendly too. They serve a full kids menu from a hearty grilled cheese to chicken tenders that if somehow the kids don't finish you will. Seating is heated and outdoor. Bring your kids (and pups) to their heated sidewalk cafe for one of the coolest heated outdoor dining experiences Portland has to offer. Be sure to return when you have a sitter because their back patio, beer list and dinner menu is amazing. With their awesome location, great service, and accommodating space adding them to your family-friendly dining destination was an easy one.

5. Mississippi Pizza Pub

7. McMenamins on the Columbia

6. Teote MezcalerÍa

From the street (or even inside the main entrance) you’d never guess that this festive, eclectic restaurant with its bright blue exterior and metal artwork décor is home to a spacious, covered patio in the back. After ordering your meal at the counter—the fare is Latin American street food and includes its signature arepas and, a deep fried Venezuelan-style corn cake—head up the stairs to access the patio. There’s ample seating and large fire pit in the center that will keep little tykes toasty warm.

9. Pizza Roma

Heated outdoor dining in SE Portland offers local families and yummy Pizza experience. From wildflowers to sunflowers, zinnias, peonies and more, here are our favorite farms near NYC for flower picking.

For a Wide Variety: Brittany Hollow Farm

Head to Brittany Hollow Farm in the Hudson Valley for one of the best selections of pick-your-own flowers near NYC. Flower varieties include zinnias, cosmos, black-eyed susans, strawflowers, snapdragons, celosia, sunflowers, butterfly weed, statice, and more, and the farm is open July through early October. Flowers are $20 per bucket, and you take the bucket home with you—bring it back for $15 buckets all season long. The fields are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.

For "Gazillions" of Flowers, Veggies & A Winery: Terhune Orchards

A major player in the "you pick" scene, Terhune Orchards offers the chance to pick something throughout the growing season.  They offer a great selection of flowers here, available from late June to October. Planters and culinary herbs are also available on site, as are numerous other fruits and veggies—both in the fields for picking and the farm store for purchase. Terhune also operates its own winery. FYI: Leave your pets with a friend—they aren’t allowed on the farm.

For Gorgeous Blooms for the First Time: Spring Wind Farm

The stunning blooms are grown sustainably, and flowers for picking include sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, celosia, gomphrena and more. Pick for a mason jar or a three-gallon bucket; prices start at $16.

For Super Sunflowers & Farm Fun: Johnson's Corner Farm

Johnson's Corner Farm loves its sunflowers. (The farm even holds Sunflower Celebrations.) In addition to lots of barnyard fun and picking produce, you can pick sunflowers for $1 a stem here, and zinnias for 25 cents each. Entrance to the field is $5/person on weekdays, and $6/person on weekends; buy tickets online to guarantee admission.

For Lavender Lovers: Lavender By the Bay

To be fair, you can't pick the lavender at Lavender By the Bay, but it's a must for fans of this soothing herb, and peak bloom for French lavender is happening now, and more to come late summer! Plus: you can load up on sachets and sprigs in the gift shop. This farm has two locations on Long Island, growing more than 80,000 plants in hues of purple, lilac, white and beyond. (FYI: The Calverton spot is across the street from water park Splish Splash.) It's $12 to enter the field and stroll in the fragrant fields. Tickets must be purchased beforehand.

For a Butterfly Moment: Melick's Town Farm

You can pick apples and peaches at Melick’s, but from July through September its stunning gardens are open for picking as well. You'll find flowers such as zinnias, sunflowers and snapdragons here, and no appointment is necessary, but they do ask that you bring your own clippers. (They advise calling ahead to find out what is blooming before you head over.) The farm charges per stem and also has pre-picked bouquets and arrangements if you need to grab a bouquet on the go. Melick's Town Farm is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6.pm., and on a nice day, butterflies flock to the gardens, making for nice Instagram fodder.

For Flowers, Berries & a Side of Fresh Ice Cream: Patty’s Berries and Bunches

If you’re looking to ditch the scissors, but pick up some berries, this is the place to go. Patty's "bunches" are flowers, which are sold pre-picked and include blossoms such as sunflowers, dahlias, peonies, and zinnias. You can also pay $8 to walk through the flower fields for the perfect photo op!  The farm features an "Ice Cream Patch,” where visitors can buy scoops of seasonal flavors which are made with fresh ingredients grown on-site. This 40-acre Long Island farm is one of our favorites for U-pick berries. Open daily, 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

For Evergreen & Sunflower Mazes & Lots of Produce to Pick: Alstede Farms

Alstede is a popular place for picking many, many things. Not only can you pick your own flowers at Alstede Farms, they've also added a cute evergreen maze, which is included with admission. Picking season runs mid-July through September, and flowers go for $1 a stem. The farm is packed with beautiful sunflowers ready for picking, and the farm’s annual sunflower maze is also open for navigation. This farm is also one of our favorites for “U-pick” fruits & veggies as well. Sweet Corn, vegetables (peppers, eggplant, tomatoes), peaches, cantaloupe, nectarines, honeydew and canary melon are all in season during the “cut your own flower” season, so you can pick up some "Jersey Fresh" produce while you're at it. Get the Dirt on Veggie & Berry Picking in Chicago

Make summer a little sweeter by picking your way through Chicago’s best spots for homegrown berries and other fruits and veggies. The U-pick berry season kicks off with strawberries in June and continues through early August, with veggies cropping up now through fall. Be sure to research your farm’s produce availability through their Facebook page and website before dusting off the wagons. Scroll down for u-picks that will help make this a summer to remember!

Tom's Farm Market

What was once a small farmstand over 40 years ago is now an expansive farm 50 miles northwest of Chicago, which includes 13 greenhouses where you can find anything from plant seedlings to hanging baskets and a bakery that features freshly baked seasonal fruit pies and cakes, cookies, scones and homemade breads. During strawberry picking season, pickers are treated to four acres with four different varieties and can recharge with made-to-order shakes and sundaes. Pickers will only find strawberries in the U-Pick fields, but the fresh market offers a selection of homegrown produce, including corn, summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. Baskets are supplied for U-Pick and pickers pay by the pound.

In the neighborhood: Nearby Union is home to the Illinois Railway Museum, which houses over 375 pieces of equipment, including electric and steam locomotives and street, passenger and baggage cars. If you catch berry fever in July, coordinate a play date with Thomas and Percy at the Day Out with Thomas event planned for Jul. 9, 10, 16 & 17.

Heider's Berry Farm

Five generations of family have been running this farm that had a typical Midwestern start of raising hogs, sheep and chicken and producing dairy, oats and hay. Today their focus is on quality fruit, good customer service and offering families memorable, wholesome fun. Red raspberries and strawberries make up the bulk of their U-Pick business, but they also have rhubarbs, black raspberries, cherries, gold raspberries and homemade jams. There is no admission and parking is free.

In the neighborhood: Woodstock, was the location for many of the outdoor scenes shot for the Groundhog Day movie starring Bill Murray, so superfans can still take a peek at the most memorable shoot locations on a walking tour. If you’re in the area May-October on a Tuesday or Saturday morning, stop by the Farmers Market in downtown Woodstock’s historic square with vendors selling produce, knitted items, soaps, honey products, baked goods, cheese and more.

Olive Berry Acres

The growing season begins in May with traditional green and exotic purple asparagus at this seven-acre farm 70 miles southwest of Chicago. Fresh, sweet strawberries make up their U-Pick business, and they will hopefully be reintroducing their raspberries in the future. There is no entrance fee for picking and supplies are provided.

In the neighborhood: Grab a pastry to compliment your berries at Morris Bakery, browse the quaint shops in downtown Morris or hit up 3 French Hens Market held the second Saturday, May through October at Grundy County Fair Grounds. If you find yourself in the area for lunch, Letty Mae's Tea Room offers a made-from-scratch menu with decor reminiscent of an English Tearoom. Enjoy your meal on vintage mismatched china surrounded by kitschy decor or have it wrapped up for a picnic on the farm.

Stade's Farm Market

Stade’s is famous for its popular Fall Festival, a fall blitz featuring live music, hayrides, a petting zoo and more. Leading up to the festival, you can visit this countryside paradise for U-Pick strawberries beginning in mid-June, raspberries in July, tomatoes and a variety of summer veggies in starting in July and pumpkins in September and October. Also available at the onsite market is homegrown asparagus, rhubarb, spinach, radishes and lettuce, as well as their privately harvested local honey. 

In the neighborhood: McHenry, Illinois is known for having a bustle of activity along the Fox River, so check out Stratton Lock & Dam and Fort McHenry Playground for picturesque outdoor fun. Authentic steam engines from the golden age of railroad are on display at the Illinois Railway Museum (if you go picking in July, double the fun with a Day Out with Thomas).

Susie's Garden Patch

Asparagus launches the six-month u-pick season and pumpkins and fall squash close it down, with deliciously sweet strawberries, onions, spinach, rhubarb, lettuce, kale, radishes, garlic, peas and green beans available at different times in between. Have your own box or bag for picking weighed at the farm stand before you get started because you pay for produce by the pound.

In the neighborhood: Take in the collection of pre-World War II planes and automobiles and early 20th-century airplane hangars and automobile garages that have been salvaged and relocated to the Poplar Grove Vintage Wings and Wheels Museum.

Where to Pick the Best Strawberries near LA

Strawberry-picking season has officially begun in Los Angeles (the season usually runs from Mar. through Jun.) so it’s time to don your sun hat and make delicious plans for all the juicy fruit you and the kids will be hauling home. Read below to find the best places in LA to pick strawberries near LA, or if you aren’t into doing the picking yourself and just want to pick-up the freshest berries, we’ve got you covered too.

Underwood Family Farms

Underwood Family Farms is the place to go if you are looking for more than strawberry-picking fun. Wagon rides, an animal center, a retail shop filled with goodies like honey and fresh cut flowers, seasonal events, plus the ability to pick some seasonal vegetables along with the sweet stuff makes this destination a fun, full-day outing for most families. Pull wagons (first come, first served) are available to transport your haul from the fields. 

Pro Tip: Check their Instagram page for strawberry picking updates (the opening of the fields were slightly delayed due to cooler temperatures and to allow more fruit to ripen). 

Hours: Open daily from 9 a.m.—6 p.m.
Cost: Weekdays, $7 per person; Weekends, $10; Special pricing on certain weekends. Kids under 2 are free.

Tanaka Farms

Since 1940, Tanaka Farms has been a real working farm and has produced some of the sweetest strawberries in SoCal. This year, they are offering strawberry picking as part of their u-pick wagon rides that includes: a ride around the farm, family fun in the designated play area, the chance to pick strawberries plus one veggie or, if strawberries aren’t available at the time of your arrival, they’ll substitute for three vegetables depending on crop availability, plus a walk through their education exhibition. If your heart is set on strawberries, know that you can always pick up some pre-harvested strawberries (along with other yummy treats like jams and nuts) from the fresh market stand that is open daily.

Pro Tip: Reservations for strawberry picking tours are required. If strawberries are plentiful this season, they will open up berry picking without requiring a tour. Check their Instagram page for the latest updates on crop availability.

If you’re up for a drive, Carlsbad has the perfect climate for growing some of the juiciest strawberries around. The Carlsbad Strawberry Company’s u-pick fields are now open and offer a fun way to get out of the house with your family for the day. In addition to picking your own, they also have a sunflower maze, free games, and hay pyramids. 

Hours: Fields and strawberry stands are open daily from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Cost: $5 general admission. $12 for a bucket admits 1 person. Kids under 5 are free.

Terry Berries: Everyone can agree that just-off-the-vine strawberries taste the best but if you can’t pick them yourself, swing by these locations for harvested-for-you berries. Terry’s Berries, an offshoot of Terry’s Farm, is located in Ventura, CA has been doling out strawberries since 2003. To stay up-to-date with availability, join their newsletter and follow their Instagram page.

Your favorite wimpy kid is coming to the animated screen! Disney+ has announced a brand new feature film that will stream this holiday season.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been a favorite among young readers but it’s never been brought to life through animation. Now a new generation can follow Greg Heffley, his best friend Rowley and the rest of the gang as they navigate middle school. The trailer just dropped and we’re definitely tuning in on December 3!

The film is guaranteed to please OG wimp fans––it’s written and produced by Jeff Kinney himself. Fans can expect to see all of Greg’s shenanigans as told through his imaginative diary writing, with some important life lessons learned, too.

Of the film, Kinney shares “This film feels like the book come to life, and it’s exciting to see Greg Heffley and his family and friends in their fully-animated glory. It is the Wimpy World in a way no one has seen before. Working on this movie, I feel like we have been sitting on a wonderful secret. I can’t wait to finally share it with the world!”

Recall Alert: Chicken Tortilla Soup Recalled Due to Foreign Matter

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced a recall by Blount Fine Foods of approximately 6,384 pounds of chicken tortilla soup by Panera. The fully cooked, read to eat chicken soup may contain extraneous material in the form of pieces of gray nitrile glove.

Several customers have complained of finding the foreign matter in their product to Blount Foods, but no adverse affect have been reported. Keep reading to see all the recall details.

The recall affects 16 oz. plastic containers of Panera BREAD at HOME Chicken Tortilla Soup and was produced on Jul. 1, 2021. Soups will have a lot code 070121-1V, “Use By 09/09/2021” and establishment number “P-13130” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Affected soups were sent to retail locations in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, and Texas. Consumers should check if they have any of the recalled products in their refrigerator and immediately throw away or return to the place of purchase.

Consumers can also contact Blount Fine Foods Customer Care Team at (866) 674-4519 Monday – Friday from 9 AM to 9 PM Eastern Standard Time with any additional questions.
