Looking for kid-friendly eats in Boston? You’ve come to the right place
Nothing sounds better to a tired parent than taking the kids out for lunch or dinner. And Boston certainly has some amazing family restaurants you’ll want to try. From great burger joints and pizza places to savory seafood and classic Italian dishes, Boston’s foodie scene is a montage of family restaurants serving up good eats from Boston Harbor to Jamaica Plain (and beyond). The next time you need a break from kitchen duty (hint: local meal services are another way to win here), head to one of these eateries that truly cater to families. You won’t be disappointed.
Is your family full of seafood fanatics who like to dine with a great view? The Boston Sail Loft will become your next favorite spot for sure. Their clam chowder has been named Best of Boston in recent years and is served in an overflowing mug, topped with oyster crackers. Order with a lobster roll and you’ll have one of the best meals in New England. Don’t worry, they have a great kids’ menu too. With classics like mac-and-cheese and chicken tenders, they’ll have a great time watching the boats they’ll eat every bite. The staff is also known to be super friendly and there is ample space in the restaurant if you have a stroller.
Another Boston favorite for seafood loving families is Joe’s Waterfront. Overlooking Boston Harbor, your dinner comes with a great view. In the summer months, the restaurant offers outdoor dining for some fresh sea air. Opt for the Captain’s Platter for a little bit of everything, or just go for your favorite seafood dish. The kid’s menu will also keep any picky eater from pushing their plate away. It’s also right across from Christopher Columbus Park so you can let the kids run wild either before or after their meal.
All day brunch with a nostalgic diner atmosphere? Yes, please! The Friendly Toast may look a little small from the outside, but it's pretty spacious once you’re inside and quite colorful too. They serve all your classic brunch favorites like chicken and waffles and breakfast sandwiches, but they also have some “monster” plates of giant pancakes or french toast. The “tiny menu” for kids has some fun choices in smaller portions like tiny avocado toast or Mini French Toast Monster and gluten free pancakes too. Plus, the price point is just right. This spot in Boston is definitely a winner.
We can’t think of a better family night out than enjoying some great pizza and watching the kids engage in friendly sports. Luckily, American Flatbread combines the fun of bowling and delicious pizza that is made from organic and local ingredients. With a variety of topping choices, and the option of gluten-free crusts, the kids won’t even notice the wait time while playing a few rounds of candlepin bowling.
Insider Tip: This also makes a great spot for birthday parties.
Teaching the kids to eat healthy is no easy task, but definitely not impossible. Life Alive is a growing chain based out of the North Shore of Boston and has become a popular vegetarian/vegan spot that aims to promote health and wellness. Pastel colors and vibrant dishes like the açaí bowls and fresh fruit juices create a pleasant atmosphere that will have the little ones smiling and asking for seconds. If you choose the Cambridge location, head over to the Harvard Arts Museum afterwards for an afternoon of educational fun.

Got gamers in the family? Then the trip to the Bit Bar Salem will be worth the drive. This arcade restaurant is every gamer’s paradise—both young and old. Serving up comfort food classics like burgers, buffalo chicken mac-and-cheese, and chicken fingers, your kids won’t know what to do first—eat or play? They’ll want to stay for hours playing games like Dance Dance Revolution and Donkey Kong. Just make sure to bring the family home before 8 p.m. when the restaurant becomes strictly 21+. Good thing, that’s bedtime anyway.
Craving some southern BBQ for the family? You should check out Sweet Cheeks Q near Fenway in Boston. A great, kid-friendly restaurant that offers all your favorite southern dishes like brisket and pulled pork. Most of the dishes are generously sized so you will be sure to have some leftovers for later. Make sure to order extra biscuits—it's kind of their thing. Another perk of this restaurant? They have an egg-laying chicken game with prizes to keep the kids occupied while the food is being prepared.
What kid doesn’t love pancakes and waffles for lunch? Theo’s Cozy Corner in Boston has all your breakfast favorites to make an easy meal for those days when you just need something to keep you all full and cozy. Their lunch menu is pretty extensive too, combining Italian and Brazilian dishes, so the kids will actually want to try something new each time. Keep in mind, this restaurant closes every day at 3 p.m. and accepts cash only, but the meals are pretty inexpensive and quite tasty too.
This classic American tavern feels like a fine dining experience but with all the features of a family-friendly restaurant. Stockyard offers high quality steak and seafood dinners, but does not leave out favorites like burgers and pasta. Though this restaurant is a little more on the pricey side, the kid’s menu has selections in the $8-10 range. A bigger plus, the menus have fun facts to keep your kids entertained and all kids’ dinners come with an ice cream for dessert.
Finding an authentic Mexican restaurant in New England is tough. El Pelon Taqueria is the exception and a great kid-friendly restaurant in Boston. Hailed for their affordable prices and genuine Mexican dishes like enchiladas and tortas, this taqueria is a treat for any Boston family. The colorful Mexican décor on the walls are also fun for the kids to look at.
Parents everywhere probably give themselves a pat on the back when they come across kid-friendly restaurants with healthy options their kids will actually eat. The Red Lentil Vegetarian & Vegan Restaurant has so many nutritious choices you’ll definitely need to try, like the Oyster Mushroom “Calamari” or vegan waffles or french toast. They also serve vegan smoothies and organic kombucha. Tust us, your kids will be begging to come back.
The Blue Nile Restaurant serves some of the best Ethiopian cuisine around the city. The fact that it has a selection of vegan and vegetarian plates your kids will like is a total bonus. Plus, this kid-friendly restaurant gives you a great opportunity to introduce your little ones to classic Ethiopian dishes like Tibs and Azifa, if you haven't already. It'll leave them wanting more.
With the new school year starting, your family’s schedule is likely to be in flux the next few weeks, which means getting ready for bed is an even bigger deal. Establishing a consistent bedtime routine will help your kiddos start their days (and nights) off in the right direction. While kids are never thrilled about going to sleep, we have a few ideas (from experts and parents like you!) to make bedtime a fun routine and not a nightly battle.
1. Start bedtime 20 minutes to one hour earlier.
While there may be no standard bedtime for every kiddo, research suggests that going to bed early is the best strategy for all kids. One way to guarantee earlier bedtimes is allowing plenty of time for little ones to get ready for bed. For example, if you want your little angel to be asleep at 8 p.m., make sure she starts the bedtime routine 20 minutes to one hour before.
2. Power down and turn up.
Unplug all visual electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime (including parents’ devices). Not only is it distracting, but screen time before bed has been linked with less sleep and higher BMIs in kids. Make this special family time, and encourage kids to listen to music or play bedtime games. There's nothing like a dance party to get the last bit of wiggles out!
3. Read before bed.
iStock
Reading and bedtime stories are a great way to transition from a busy day to sleepy time. Let your kiddo choose a few books they want to read and make story time part of the bedtime routine. Another reason why reading before bed is great is it actually helps kids learn. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents start reading to kids as early as birth to help them learn more words, which helps with brain development.
Did you know signing to your little ones can actually give them more educational and emotional success as they grow? Sally Goddard-Blythe, director of the UK’s Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology, recommends that parents start working on their singing abilities and belting out those bedtime songs to ensure healthier kids.
Just like adults, kids' brains can't go from being stimulated to suddenly sleeping. Jennifer Shu, MD, a pediatrician with Children's Medical Group in Atlanta, suggests you plan for some wind-down time before your little one hits the pillow. This is when kids can read a book or you can start dimming the lights in their bedroom. Keep things calm and on the low-key side (that means no tickle fights during the wind-down time).
6. Disarm fear of the dark
iStock
According to Mary Dobbins, MD, a pediatrician and child psychologist, it's normal for kids to be afraid of the dark. If your little one is scared of the nighttime darkness and potential monsters under the bed, make a fun game of quietly checking the room with a flashlight for any "monsters" in the closet or under the bed.
7. Keep fear of FOMO at bay.
Shelley Massey
Is your little one avoiding bedtime because he has a fear of missing out (FOMO)? This fear may not be darkness-based, but it's just as common. A helpful tip is to explain that when you leave the room, you’re going to start your own wind-down process and get ready for bed soon. If that elicits an eye roll, remind them of something they're looking forward to tomorrow like a visiting relative, a trip to the playground or a special outing. This gentle reminder will enforce that the sooner they go to sleep, the sooner tomorrow will come!
Sometimes a small bite to eat before bedtime can actually help kids fall (and stay) asleep. In fact, when a little one (especially a toddler) has a full tummy, they are more likely to sleep through the night instead of waking up hungry. Alissa Palliano of Mommybites suggests simple snacks like yogurt and cheese (great for added calcium), whole grain, fruit or nut butter to keep tummies in line and kids ready for bed.
Many kids dislike bedtime because they feel they're not able to make decisions about going to bed. Instead of making bedtime an argument-filled zone, help kids maintain a sense of control by offering them different choices as part of their routine. Jennifer Waldburger, the co-founder of Sleepy Planet child sleep consultation firm, suggests the following: "Do you want to skip or walk to the bath?" Or "Do you want to wear green pajamas or blue ones?" Or ask them if they want two stories or three.
10. Maintain a relaxing ritual like a bath or massage.
Parents aren't the only ones who benefit from a relaxing massage. Studies show that kids also reap the rewards of this relaxing ritual. According to Maria Hernandez-Reif, a researcher at the Touch Research Institute, massage reduces stress hormone levels and blood glucose levels. These lower stress hormones help reduce anxiety and can give your kiddo a healthier immune system as she grows. A relaxing bath before bedtime is also a great way to transition to the relaxation of bedtime.
One of the reasons little ones don't like bedtime is because it's a big part of the day that they're alone. To help them feel more at ease, make sure your kiddo has a security object that she selects and brings to bed with her. This could be a blanket, stuffed animal or even a shirt that has mom or dad's scent. Those little objects can help bring some safety to the bedtime routine.
12. Don't forget a potty stop.
iStock
Make sure your kiddo makes one last bathroom stop before bedtime. According to Vincent Iannelli, MD, this is especially important for kids who are prone to wetting the bed. Using the restroom before bed also helps kids avoid the tendency to get back out of bed to go to the bathroom once you've already said goodnight.
Most kids who ask for one more bite of food or sip of water aren’t famished or parched, they’re simply stalling. Set boundaries and be diligent about enforcing them. Whenever appropriate, leave a glass of water bedside to ward off thirst. Getting back into the swing of things is tough for kids, but if you remain patient and firm, a peaceful bedtime routine will come together in no time.
Above all else, be consistent! To ensure the routine is consistent, do it at the same time and in the same order every night. And choose a bedtime a bit earlier than you might think. Studies show that earlier bedtimespromote health, good sleep hygiene, and cognitive skills.

With the goal of expanding access to pregnancy and postpartum resources for Black women who experience deep disparities in maternal health outcomes, she created this online destination to support pregnancy and postpartum health, providing symptom tracking and curated, culturally specific education and lifestyle resources for Mae mamas. Olsher partnered with parenting educator Danielle Bettmann, and together they designed a 12-month "Kids Mental Health Skills at Home" program. Based on scientific research and backed by an impressive advisory board, the program is designed to create a positive foundation for kids' mental health. With a combination of a physical product delivered to your home every month and easy-to-follow parent support, Mighty + Bright has once again made it easy for families to build the necessary skills for handling life's toughest stuff.
It didn’t sit right with her when Melissa Bowley’s doctor told her that her postpartum bladder leakage just “came with the territory” of being a mom of two. Her doctor did not offer her wellness services or introduce her to pelvic floor therapy. And so, the Flourish Fund was born, the first-ever experiential baby registry where parents can register for support services and wellness items, from pregnancy to parenthood. New and expecting parents can register for services through a vetted network that includes lactation consultants, sleep consultants, pelvic floor therapy, and prenatal and postpartum yoga. There are also products that support wellness for baby and mama, including sleep machines, developmental toys, and more.
Guardian Lane sources counselors and therapists from around the world who take in-person therapeutic activities and turn them into self-guided videos so for families, children, and even school counselors, have access to coping mechanisms designed with children in mind. After leaving her first tech startup which she and her husband built, Guardian Lane founder Kristina Jones found herself reflecting on her childhood grief: Kristina was just seven years old when her father died, and she never received professional help to help her process this trauma. Kristina wrote a book, My Forever Guardian, about a group of young friends who help one another after the death of a loved one or a pet. While researching the book, she discovered that the kind of mental health services available for grieving families still involved in-person visits. She created Guardian Lane as a way to bring grief counseling and help directly into a child’s home. Guardian Lane started with grief counseling from the death of a loved one, but the platform will soon help children through other life experiences such as divorce, bullying, and the mental-health effects and stress of COVID in our children’s lives.

When Stephanie Boone's beloved dog, Luna, began suffering from devastating side-effects caused by pesticide poisoning caused by commonly prescribed monthly flea-and-tick medication and quarterly pest control services, Luna's vet recommended putting her down. In Stephanie's own words, "That was just not an option." In addition, Girlpalooza products are vegan, come with empowering scents and messaging and a portion of each sale go towards charities that support young girls.
Two years ago, when mom of four and health coach Melissa Evans’ daughter came down with a sore throat, Melissa wished there was something she could provide to soothe her kiddo. That’s when she noticed there were no options that she felt comfortable with. Cough drops and lozenges posed a risk for choking and, for the most part, contained chemicals like artificial colors, flavors and ingredients. She then came up with the idea for a worry-free, healthier, effective and fun alternative for kids. Lolleez are available at Target, CVS, Stop & Shop, Kroger and on Amazon! Lolleez come in packs of 15 pops: Watermelon, Strawberry, Orange Mango and a Variety Pack for a suggested retail price of $6.99.
Jennifer Holland had her “aha!” moment at the doctor’s office with her young son. It led her to create Throat Scope—the world's first illuminated tongue depressor that lights up the entire throat and mouth. Her invention is not only popular, in 2017 it won silver at the Edison Awards in New York for her innovation. This mama always dreamed of inventing something that would make the world a better place and she’s achieved that goal: she’s on a mission to educate families on how to recognize the signs of oral cancer or detect a sore throat, strep throat, thrush, inflamed gums and tooth pain. The stay-at-home mom’s innovative product is now available in 140 countries.
Kat Schneider wanted to do the right thing for her health and her baby, so when she found out she was pregnant she started taking prenatal vitamins. That’s when she noticed that many supplements had questionable ingredients, and worse, the ones she was taking didn’t even list the ingredients. So she decided to found Ritual: subscription-based supplements delivered directly to your door, each month. They are all non-GMO, vegan, gluten and soy-free and all are designed exclusively for women, with clear ingredients lists so you always know what you are putting in your body.

We are all learning to navigate the new normal during the time of coronavirus, but luckily, Gru and his minions are here to help. In collaboration with the World Health Organization and the United Nations Foundation, Illumination has launched a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to help demonstrate safe and healthy practices.
Voicing his famous character, Steve Carell brings Gru to life to share how being kind to others, practicing social distancing and remaining active can save lives. The PSA is set to tons of scenes from the Despicable Me franchise, including plenty of minions!
The PSA will be translated into Spanish, French, Portuguese and Arabic as well as others. The company behind Despicable Me, Illumination, is the first Hollywood Studio to partner with WHO, the UN Foundation and the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund as they work to promote health and protection efforts during the pandemic
President & CEO of the United Nations Foundation, Elizabeth Cousens says of the partnership, “As the world continues tograpple with the challenges of COVID-19, one of our most powerfulweaponsis kindness. We are delighted that the Despicable Mecharacters are letting their love show and showingways tokeep themselves and their communities safe during this unprecedented time.”
In the heart of Beverly Hills even the parks get a little nip & tuck. Between Spalding and Roxbury on Olympic Blvd, for decades Roxbury Park has been the slightly staid go-to for local playdates. But with tired sand and exhausted equipment, it was time for a little work. Renovation finally complete, the Roxbury Park reveal is ready for it’s close up, and once you get there, you won’t want to leave.
Not Just A Pretty Face
Yes, the place looks fabulous: the high tech towers and twirls and slides and spinning wheels are beautiful and irresistible, but beyond looking cool, much thought went into their creation. These monkey bars and intermittent rock walls were researched and built to create not just a safe and easily accessible means of creative climbing, turn taking and kid collaboration, but to promote health and well-being through challenges that encourage making their mini-muscles work to conquer that wall or wiggle their way to the top. It’s a playground for mind & body, and building the ability to use both together.
The Future’s So Bright…
…they put up shades! In addition to Mother Nature contributing her part (the canopy of trees are ever so strategic, the purple blossoms ever so pretty), now there’s a host of shade sails to supplement it. Sunblock, hats, always a smart move. But in that rare instance that mom forgets (not you, but some other kid’s mom), the park has you covered. Literally.
Some Sand In, Some Sand Out
If you hate that moment of coming home from the park and recreating the sandbox in the entryway as soon as they take off their shoes, this new climbing area is for you. The once sand foundation has been upgraded with a rubberized surface, making it not just a cleaner place to play, but one that promises cleaner homecomings.
Until they find the new sand and water table. Complete with sand digger. Ah, well. Maybe a clean entryway is overrated.
We Can See You From Right Here
Lots more seating has been provided around the perimeter. For those moments when they’re safely exploring their upward mobility and parents can actually take a load off, the bench is waiting. Coming with coffee isn’t a terrible idea.
To Everything Turn, Turn, Turn
Add this to the list of why it’s great to be a kid. Between the new tippy twirl tire for a whole gang, those little tulip seats for one, and the triangular wheels where they can stand and spin round and round and round again, kids can go for hours. But with all that spinning, you may need a Dramamine just to watch.
Climb, Slide, Swing, and Spin
The Roxbury revamp has gone fairly futuristic. Twisty jungle gyms. Slinky slides. Much more in the monkey bar department. And swings that match the new millennium; 16 in total, with12 big kid kinds and 4 little buckets. That keeps kids of all ages happy, and they never have to wait in line for a turn.
Plenty of Parking
This park boasts possibly the most (and inexpensive) parking in Beverly Hills. There is plenty of parking around the park perimeter (take the alley that runs along the west side of the park), with 20 min for $0.25 meters available as far as the eye can see. There’s also metered parking available on Roxbury south of Olympic, and in a small lot behind the community center. Still can’t find a spot? Try Olympic Boulevard, but mind those parking signs.
So What’d They Do With all The Old Stuff?
It all got donated to Kids Around the World, where the old equipment got re-purposed to parks in the Philippines and Ecuador. This upgrade comes with multiple upsides.
Roxbury Park kept all the other assets fully in tact: the 11 sprawling acres (in the city!) of rolling green grass, four tennis courts and a hitting wall, lawn bowling, croquet, putting greens, a baseball diamond and a soccer field, a basketball court and sand volleyball, too. But now with up and coming shaded picnic pavilion, infinite climbing courses, twirls, whirls, and enough swings for the whole gang to hang…prepare to plant yourself and leave only when the kids make you. Maybe pack lunch. Heck, pack dinner while you’re at it.

Take the winners of this year’s “We Shield Moms Contest” hosted by Blue Shield of California, for example. After we scoured California for inspiring moms who make it their mission to promote health and wellness, it came down to two mamas who left a truly lasting impression.
Runner Up Winner Jane Gould
Nominated by Gianna Frazee
My friend Jane Gould is one of the most inspiring moms I know. She is personally battling MS but continues to be a source of positive energy and wellness for her community. She started out by teaching Yogabugs when her kids were in preschool and kindergarten. She helped start a revolution of wellness for young kids by teaching them yoga and meditation. She impacted young kids and their parents across the community in Marin. Kids flocked to her classes to learn how to stretch their bodies and quiet their minds.
She now teaches yoga to adults at Yogaworks, and in particular tries to teach people who are battling MS. She has been an inspiration because she shows that by staying strong with yoga, she can fight the disease both mentally and physically.
She focuses on good nutrition, a string body and the positive calm mental energy necessary. She is a positive role model for her kids and the moms in her community. Everything she does is with a smile and warm and loving energy. She is truly an inspiration to all of those who know her!
