Toddlers are in that special (mostly exciting) stage between babyhood and preschool that can leave parents wondering… what in the world is happening here?! How did we go from zero to 60 over the state of a banana? They’re called the terrible twos for a reason, right? Sometimes they lose it over the color of a sippy cup or because the dog looked at them funny. Whatever the reason your kid is about to pass the point of no return, you’ve got precious moments to spare. But there’s hope on the horizon—simple calming phrases that have the power to avert tantrums and bring kids back to center.

The next time you see it coming, take one of these phrases out for a spin. There are even a few great tips from Dr. Candice Jones, a board-certified pediatrician practicing in Orlando, Florida, to help you put your best parent-foot forward.

1. “You have a choice.”

When it comes to calming phrases, this is a gimme for any toddler parent. Once children have some vocabulary down, you can start giving them options. This doesn’t mean your home becomes a toddler free-for-all. Instead, offer your kiddo reasonable choices that empower them and encourage problem-solving skills to head off predictable tantrums looming on the horizon.

For example, when you’re rushed to get out the door in the morning, ask your toddler if they’d like to wear their tennis shoes or rain boots. When it’s time to get ready for bed, let them choose between the car pajamas and the star pajamas. Limiting their choices, while still giving them control, “satisfies the need for some independence,” according to Dr. Jones. She also suggests following it up with an affirmation such as, “Rain boots? Smart choice, because today, it’s raining!”

2. “Please stop, because…”

If your toddler is making a poor choice (which, yep, is going to happen a lot), of course, you want to stop the behavior, especially if it’s dangerous to themselves or someone else. However, it’s ok to offer a short explanation of why. You’re treating your child as the human they are, not a robot who should obey your every command without understanding your reasoning, especially as they get older. For example, “Please don’t hit your brother. Hitting hurts.” Use short phrases and specific, toddler-understandable language. Dr. Jones shares that giving your child a reason to stop a behavior can help them make better choices in the future.

3. “I understand you feel…”

When your child makes a poor choice, remember that it’s more than likely a typical toddler behavior. Tantrums, physical responses (throwing, hitting, etc.), and big emotions that result in zero-to-60 emotional reactions are very normal. Offer empathy for their feelings, first and foremost, even if your child was in the wrong. Empathy goes a long way in building a connection with your child so that they’re best able to then receive whatever correction is necessary. Your child will likely not develop empathy until they are closer to four, but you can model it now. Plus, correction is more effective when you offer it with “a spoonful of connection,” Dr. Jones shares.

4. “I’m listening…”

There’s something to be said about the Dr. Frasier Crane approach to parenting. Offering an empathetic ear to your toddler is an effective way to connect and give them space to work through those big feelings before they escalate. It’s especially effective when you get down on their level, name their feeling (as suggested above), and prompt them to tell you about it. It may take a minute, but it’s crazy cool to see the way anger transforms into sadness with this simple phrase.

5. “Let’s play together.”

It’s one thing to tell kids of any age any sort of directions, but it’s another to practice it. Role-play with your toddler to help them figure out frustrating or confusing situations that can cause meltdowns. Use dolls, action figures, or even family members to act out a familiar scenario—and then act out the wrong way (with sad faces) and then the right way (happy faces, high-fives, etc.). When you’re done, tell your child, “We worked together to solve a problem! Yay!”

Always do this when your child is regulated; don’t try to teach a lesson in the heat of the moment. If you missed that before-the-storm window, you can always tack this one on at the end when your kiddo has reached the other side.

6. “Can I give you a hug?”

When we see our little one getting ready to erupt, it’s only natural to want to run the other way. But sometimes when you lean in and offer comfort rather than a disappointed look, it’s just what kids need to regulate those overwhelming emotions and calm down. Just remember, it’s important to model consent, even when diffusing your ticking time bomb. And don’t be surprised if you get turned down; not all kids want comfort when they’re working through things. But the moment you get the green light, go for it.

7. “I’m here when you need me.”

What could be more reassuring to your overwhelmed toddler than this simple phrase? Letting them know you’re here for them is an easy way to support them and model that their feelings are not only valid, but they’re also pretty typical. Plus, there are variations of this one you can pull out depending on the situation. “How can I help?” and “Can I show you another way?” both fall into this category.

8. “Let’s take a deep breath.”

Of all the calming phrases on our list, this one comes with its own song, thanks to Daniel Tiger. Sure, they’ve heard this one a time or two, but kids can always count on deep breathing to turn a not-so-great situation around. Trust us, it’s science. Taking a deep breath activates the parasympathetic nervous system, increases oxygen in your bloodstream, and stimulates relaxation. In short, it helps kids find equilibrium. The next time your toddler’s train is about the derail, help them “take a deep breath and count to four.” You can also encourage them to blow out a candle (where your finger is the candle) if they need something to focus on.

All of these phrases that help toddlers calm down show your kiddo that you love them and that you’re here for them, no matter what they’re feeling (remember, tantrums are a typical and important stage of their development). A present, responsive parent is a loving parent. By showing up, you’re establishing an expectation that you’ll always be there for them, through thick and thin.

Let’s be honest, almost everyone yells at their kids sometimes. Just picture your average busy morning trying to get everyone out the door: One of them starts whining or picks a fight with their sibling and you’re about to be late, again. You feel your frustration beginning to bubble up and before you know it, you’re shouting at everyone because you just need to GET OUT THE DAMN DOOR! Someone (maybe you) starts to cry and then everyone starts their day feeling terrible.

While it’s totally normal to blow your top occasionally, studies show that it’s not a very effective parenting strategy, it doesn’t help your kids behave any better, and it can lead to loads of negative outcomes in the future (behavioral and emotional, among others). But even if you know that yelling is bad, how do you break the habit?

“There are very few people who do not yell,” says Dr. Michele Locke, a registered clinical psychologist specializing in child, adolescent, and parenting psychology in Toronto. “Most people do.” But that doesn’t mean you can’t improve your relationship with your littles. Here are some simple steps to help you stop yelling at your kids and get a handle on your behavior.

1. Consider How You Were Raised

How you behave has a lot to do with how you were treated as a kid yourself. “One of the main reasons that we yell is that we were raised in that kind of environment,” says Dajana Yoakley, a peaceful parenting coach in Little Rock, Arkansas.

If you come from a family of yellers, it can feel ingrained in you to react that same way, explains Locke. For example, when you were a child and had a big emotion, like anger, if the adults responsible for you yelled at you during your outburst, you learned that your big emotions led to a negative outcome in someone that you loved.

“When you become a parent and your kids have those same emotions that you had as a kid, your reaction is habitual, because you’re actually trying to shut down the emotion almost like you’re reacting to your own little self,” says Locke. Hence the yelling.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t change. Understanding why you react that way is half the battle, and the other half is practice. If you can’t get there through parenting books, podcasts, or practice, which can be a tall order for a busy parent, therapy is another great option.

2. Know Your Triggers

“Parents yell because they are burnt out, exhausted, or triggered,” says Locke. Parents are most likely to yell before bedtime, when they’re rushed or overstimulated, or when their child activates a feeling in them that they can’t regulate, she explains.

Notice how your body feels in the moment right before you yell, during the yell, or right after, recommends Yoakley. Maybe your heart is racing, or you start to sweat. “You have to really tune into your body as an instrument to tell you the clues of what you’re feeling. If you don’t know what you’re feeling, then you can’t change what you’re feeling,” says Yoakley.

Once you start to recognize the feeling that you’re about to blow up, you can start to get a handle on it. There are also a few other things you can do to dial down your rage in the moment. If possible, remove the immediate stressor. Late for dinner? Takeout (or cereal) it is. Your kid doesn’t want to wear rain boots? Throw them in their backpack instead. If everyone’s hungry and tired, throw some snacks at the situation, which can regulate everyone’s blood sugar and take things down a notch.

3. Anchor Yourself

If you’re getting overwhelmed, and feel a yell building, try and remove yourself from the situation, or take a pause before you react. If you can safely leave your children for a moment, Locke recommends heading to the bathroom and putting an ice pack on your skin, or taking a few deep breaths to remind your body that it’s not an emergency. Breathing techniques, like the five-finger breathing technique, can help bring some calm, plus you can teach it to and model it for your kids. This mindfulness technique can help you find that mind-body connection, with no props required.

The key is really to stop yourself before you fall into the same pattern of overreaction. Let your kids misbehave for a few minutes longer so you can be ready to approach them calmly and lead by example. “Do whatever you have to do to anchor yourself in the moment and ask yourself, how do I move into this situation and be a sturdy leader?” says Locke.

4. Recognize the Vicious Cycle

“Shouting can work in the moment, but what happens long term is your child begins to shout too, and the relationship becomes more disconnected and ruptured,” says Yoakley.

The reason it might feel like yelling works to stop the bad behavior is because it’s scary and activates your kids’ fear response, says Locke. “It doesn’t teach them anything about what to do next time,” she says. “You just have to increase the intensity and frequency of your yelling.”

Related: 8 Phrases to Bring a Toddler Back From the Brink

Plus, your child learns that shouting is the only way that someone will listen to them. “You’re trying to get them to stop yelling by doing the same thing,” says Locke. Yelling is bad for kids for a variety of reasons. It’s associated with depressive symptoms and can put them at risk of developing lasting mental health problems. Harsh parenting practices can even change your child’s brain structure. Yikes!

But not yelling doesn’t mean you can’t help your children manage their behavior. “A sturdy tone is different than a yell,” says Locke.

5. Practice Self-Compassion

After you yell, notice how you talk to yourself. Instead of saying “I’m such a horrible parent and my kids are the worst,” or “I’m sure other people never have this problem,” try and offer the same kindness you would to a friend, says Yoakley. Tell yourself, “This is so hard right now,” and validate how you feel. When you validate your own anger or shame, it takes away some of its intensity, says Yoakley.

6. Repair, Repair, Repair

“Everyone’s going to yell at their kids sometimes,” says Locke. “The most important thing is what you do after the fact.” Repair is critical after a yelling match. What does repair mean? It’s more than just an apology, says Yoakley. Once everyone is feeling calm, have a conversation with your kids and take responsibility for how you behaved.

Locke provides a sample script of how to talk to your kids after a big shoutfest. “I got overwhelmed. My frustration came out as yelling and here I am, trying to have kids who don’t yell so I’m really working on that. And I’m sorry that it came out that way.”

Explain to your kids, even if they’re really small, that it’s something you’re working on and that it’s a “you” problem, not a “them” problem, says Locke.

“It’s important to tell your kids that it’s never okay for you to yell at them. Even if you were angry,” says Yoakley. Ask them how the fight made them feel. Did it make them feel sad, or scared? Let them express their feelings and wrap up the repair with a hug.

This viral Ted Talk by Dr. Becky Kennedy has more details on how to repair with your kids.

7. Quit Yelling About The Small Stuff

It’s pretty easy to get into a shouting routine and use it to get your kids to listen. Many parents yell at their kids when they’re not paying attention, when they spill their water (again!), or when they just won’t do the thing you’ve asked. While it’s one thing to occasionally yell when your kids misbehave, it’s another behavior altogether when you use it consistently. Your kids are more likely to tune you out, and you’re more likely to feel even worse about yourself.

Related: 9 ‘Harmless’ Phrases That Hurt Kids More Than You Think

If you know you’re going to blow on occasion, like when your kids decide it’s WrestleMania time, try and dial back your regular, everyday shouting. Instead of yelling up the stairs that “Dinner is on the table NOW,” calmly walk closer to them and announce that it’s time to eat. Or if you sense a shouting match coming with a kid who doesn’t want to clean up their toys, try completely flipping the script and using the “whisper technique.”

8. Set Yourself Up for Success

If you find you just can’t get on top of things, it’s time to get proactive. Is the morning rush always a huge trigger? What can you do the night before to make it easier and prevent a situation where you end up yelling? Set expectations for your kids and yourself. Ask them to pick out their clothes the night before. If breakfast is always a disaster, simplify what you offer. If you can, Locke recommends getting up earlier than your kids so that you have a few moments to yourself before the chaos begins. You can use a reward chart with before-school tasks if the morning is really dragging, but kids should get the hang of things if you have clear and consistent expectations and you don’t ask them to do too many things at once. Whatever event usually causes the most issues, ask yourself what you can do to get through those stressful moments more smoothly.

9. Keep Working On It

Two things can be true, says Yoakley. You can yell and be a good parent. The more you practice remaining calm and controlling the shouting, over time you’ll likely yell less, and your kids will cooperate more.

“As long as you keep trying, that’s more important than never yelling,” says Locke. “I think when we shame parents, it actually makes them less able to change.”

From scavenger hunts to Follow the Leader, these fun activities take your toddler walks to the next level

One of the best things about parenting a toddler is that they can find wonder in the simplest of things. Take a neighborhood walk, for example. Kids are thrilled by the possibilities—what will they find? Who will they see? Where will they go? The next time you need an easy toddler activity that takes little-to-no planning, spice up your walk with one of these ideas.

1. Treasure walk

No matter where you walk with your little one, you can count on them to pick up the oddest treasures. In fact, we’re willing to bet your tot comes home from each family outing with at least three of the following stuffed into a pocket: feather, coin, dropped hair tie, wrapper, rock, flower.

Our suggestion? Lean in. Rather than quickly reaching for the hand sanitizer in your back pocket as you remind them to “leave it, please,” give them a small bag or box to keep their special finds safe on your walk. Call it a treasure walk and you’ve got a wonderful new way to explore.

2. License plate game

Car trips call for the license plate game. Isn’t it only fair that neighborhood walks should have something similar? Keep your wee one motivated to move when you play the alphabet game (numbers work, too!). See if your kiddo can find all the letters—from A to Z—on street signs, on cars, and even on houses.

3. Jump in puddles

While it’s usually easy to get kids outside on a sunny day, it’s harder when the rain is falling. Count on a simple walk around the block to lift everyone’s spirits on a gray day. And you can encourage your kids to get a little wet with a promise of puddle-jumping good times. All it takes is rain boots and a sense of adventure to find just the right ones for splashing. Fair warning: You may have to add extra blocks to your typical route for this one. Puddles never get old! (We’ve also got you covered with plenty of other rainy day activities for toddlers.)

4. Scavenger hunt

Neighborhood scavenger hunts were all the rage in the early months of the pandemic for a reason. Not only are they easy to plan, but with so many ideas out there, you can do a different one every day and never seem to run out of options. Find all the colors of the rainbow, different textures, nature sounds, vehicles, trees… let your imagination run wild. They’ll love the hunt; you’ll love the simplicity.

5. Nature art

Turn your walk into an art project precursor when you go out in search of leaves, flowers, pine cones, and other natural elements. You can’t go wrong, because no matter what your kiddo finds, it can be used to make magical sun paper prints that develop in the sunlight. You’ll need special paper for this one, and a bit of patience as your kiddo both seeks out nature’s treasures and then puts them together. Too much work? Stick with the nature theme and stuff paper and a few crayons into your diaper bag to make bark rubbings. You’ll come home with fridge-ready art.

6. Clean up the streets

Turn your walk into a beautiful day in the neighborhood when you and the kids pick up trash. All you need is a bag, gloves, and some hand sanitizer, and you’re ready to leave the world a little better than you found it.

7. Follow the Leader

Challenge your tot to a game of Follow the Leader. Can your mini-me walk like a duck? Walk backward? Do a silly dance? Remember to take turns leading—is there anything toddlers love more than being in charge? And have fun coming up with actions to follow. It’s a great one to pull out when your kiddo needs a little extra motivation to make it home because it’s simply irresistible.

8. Plant seed bombs

Ideas that take a little prep ahead of time and give you an at-home activity first are always a hit. If you’ve got some extra flower seeds from your spring planting, turn them into seed bombs that you can “plant” at a local public park or walkway. This one’s a twofer because you can take your tot out to find the flowers on a walk later in the year.

9. I Spy

This one’s a toddler favorite for a reason. It blends just the right amount of mystery with all the colors of the rainbow. If your kiddo needs a distraction during the walk, trot out this favorite and make it happen. I Spy something blue… green …brown; you know how to play. Set your sights on the fun.

10. Bird watching (and listening!)

While binoculars might be a bit much for toddlers, listening for different birds is right up their alley. See if you can spot any of the winged pals you hear as you make your way down the street. Follow it up with a book that identifies local species, and your kiddo will want to take a walk every day to figure out which feathered friends are around.

Amazon Prime Day is like Christmas in July

We’ve been waiting all year for this. Amazon Prime Day 2023 is July 11-12. It’s a big deal. Actually, lots of big deals. There are ridiculously good savings to be had when you shop, and even the days leading up to it include major sales drops courtesy of the Big A. Amazon is not playing around this year, either. And we get it—you’re being bombarded with emails and posts and splash pages. Overwhelming, to say the least. We know how hard it is to keep up with it all. We’re here to make it all much easier to get what you want, when you want it (and when it’s available).

This is a mega guide to Amazon Prime Day. We’ve made sure to divide it up by category, and our shopping editor will be updating this post as new deals drop. Make sure to bookmark this one, folks. These Prime Day deals start early and run though the 12th, so you’re sure to find something (or several somethings) that you’ve had on your list. If you’ve been waiting until “the right time”, here’s your sign. This is it.

Family pics, family party, family movie night. These Valentine’s Day outfit ideas for the whole family are ready for the 14th!

Can you feel it? Love is in the air. Candy is on the shelves. Valentine’s Day crafts are trending on Pinterest. It’s Cupid’s time to shine! And what’s the Season of Love without dressing the part? Fall and early winter can feel a little dark, a little grey. The time between January and Spring Break is all about bringing some color back into our lives (and into our wardrobes!). Of course, we believe you can wear whatever you want, any time of the year. The rules are totally outdated, but there’s definitely a trend happening after we ring in the New Year—more color, more print, and bolder statements are popping up everywhere. So there’s no better time to embrace all of those trends than Valentine’s Day (and beyond.). And there’s no better time to start looking into Valentine’s Day outfit ideas for the whole family!

As long as we’re leaning into more color, more print, and bolder statements, we’re naturally going to lean on Boden! We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Boden knows how to do color. It’s a signature British style move to take classic silhouettes and wear them in deeply saturated hues. Those classic styles make everything Boden creates so easy to wear. Their absolutely adorable kiddo’s line, Mini Boden (can you even handle how cute that is?), takes precious prints and daily essentials and adds a twist! On the other hand, their pieces for mom and dad are just as much fun and great for mixing and matching. So when it comes to Valentine’s Day outfit ideas for the whole family, Boden is the first place we turned.

There’s no better time to shop Boden, too, thanks to the major sales happening now!

Channel Oprah energy with a few of Oprah’s Favorite Things 2022

Coming in hot: Oprah’s Favorite Things 2022. This is the ultimate list of gifts, goodies, and gotta-haves from the powerhouse that is Oprah. Every year we look forward to this list, and for 2022, everything is available on Amazon and includes small businesses, BIPOC-owned, and women-owned brands! We love Amazon for oh-so-many reasons (have you checked out the Holiday Beauty Haul Event yet??), so getting to combine our Amazon fandom with our Oprah adoration is a huge win (not to mention getting to use our Prime perks).

There’s a massive array of different products and finds, so you’ll be able to knock out a lot of holiday shopping in one pass, too. From housewares to momwears, we’ve downright gleeful over these picks! Make sure to grab what you can ASAP; they risk selling out fast! These are some of our favorite things from Oprah’s Favorite Things, but really, we could add them all to our carts. Not that we would…

Coravin Timeless Three Plus Wine by the Glass System

For the wine aficionado in your life, the Coravin system allows you to enjoy a glass of wine without removing the cork! That means you can pour a glass and save the rest for days, months, or even years. The coated wine needle inserts into the cork, letting you pour smoothly and preserve the remaining bottle!

Amazon Review: "My only regret about this product is that I didn't buy it sooner. Easy to use, and, while the argon gas isn't inexpensive, I can get 7 or 8 bottles of usage out of each argon canister, or a buck a bottle, by using the canister for the 1st 2 6-oz glasses out of each bottle, then popping the cork for the 2nd half of the bottle. I no longer hesitate about drinking a more expensive bottle of wine, since I won't need to drink the whole bottle over 1-2 days or toss the remainder." —David

When unused stuff is piling up…

It’s amazing how much gear kids require. From their first bucket carseat through their last pair of soccer cleats, there’s a constant flow of outgrown and no-longer-used stuff cycling through our homes. Who has the time to sort through the piles and pass them along, donate them or try to sell them online? That’s what inspired one Pacific Northwest dad to create Sella. An online service that pairs busy families with expert sellers so you can “turn your clutter into cash.” The process is pretty simple. Gather up all that unused Kindle, the baby carrier your kiddo has outgrown, or the baby monitor you don’t need anymore, because baby (finally!) sleeps through the night. Then ship it all out to Sella. They take it from there, snapping pics, listing it on different sites, and writing the listing. All that’s left is for you to approve the listing and wait for it to sell. What will you do with all that free time and space?

Insider Tip: Sella has plans to launch locally in Seattle so parents can drop-off items in person soon, but for now mail-in is how to get things done.

When your bookshelf needs a boost…

How lucky are we that Seattle is home to so many amazing indie bookstores? Some love to leave new books in Free Little Libraries around town. Some host storytimes and author meet and greets for kids. Others help parents keep their kid’s bookshelf fresh with a monthly subscription box. We’re big fans of Phinney Books’ Phinney By Post Kids program that delivers a new picture book to your doorstep monthly or every other month. What could be easier? The books are aimed at kids ages birth through five, and are hand-selected by the discerning staff at Phinney Books. While they have a lot things they take into consideration when selecting the books, the one that matters most to parents is that your kids will want to read it over and over and over again.

Insider Tip: If you’re short on time, but aren’t quite sold on a new book a month, call your local bookstore to get recommendations. Trust us, they know their stuff and have spot-on picks for every kid.

When your kiddo needs something new to do…

If you’ve got a toddler you know how quickly they move from one toy to the next. They’re a physical embodiment of the “ohh! squirrel!” phenomenon. And while we know how much you’d love to spend all day playing dress-up, reading stories, or heading out on the next pretend Paw Patrol rescue with them, there’s only so much time in a day to play. Enter Sensa Play Rentals, a parent-owned, Seattle company that makes gorgeous sensory play kits for kids, delivers them to your door, and even picks them up one week later. It’s what every kid wants (and every parent needs).

When you need to get dinner on the table….

This Tukwila-based company has been helping Seattle families get dinner on the table since 1998. For those nights when sports, or theater, or working late leave you pressed for time, you can grab an Innovasian frozen protein, choose a family-friendly recipe, and have dinner ready in around 30 minutes. Inventive dinner ideas, like Asian Chicken & Waffles or Simple and Easy Spam Musubi are kid crowd-pleasers that fill them up just in time to shuttle them out the door (or maybe off to bed?) again.

Insider Tip: Follow them on Instagram for creative ways to use Innovasian’s entrees, sides, and apps.

When you missed your trip to the Farmer’s Market…

Although you had high hopes for your pandemic garden, it’s a little overgrown at this point. And strolling the Farmer’s Market just isn’t in the cards this week. Let local Seattle farmers help get fresh produce from their fields to your fridge when you sign up for a fall or winter CSA share.
