Trust us. Oregon’s Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival is as family-friendly as it gets

If you are thrilled that spring is here, then you’ll want to celebrate with Portland’s epic Annual Wooden Shoe Tulip festival! This month-and-a-half-long family-friendly event kicks off on March 17, and offers tons of exciting activities like hot air balloon and cow train rides as well as special events and activities for families to attend. Read on for your guide to this beloved spring event.

What is the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival?

The Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm puts on the Wooden Shoe Tulip Fest in Woodburn, Oregon. This Oregon farm is home to 40 acres filled with various tulips that come in stunning colors. The fields get rearranged into new patterns each year, so the annual celebration never fails to stun attendees—a big reason they return again and again. But the tulips aren’t the only thing your crew has to look forward to at this spring event. There are incredible views of mountains, nearby vineyards, and onsite food, drinks, and fun for the whole family to enjoy. Kids in particular love the play area, and there are hay rides and special weekend events you should start planning for now.

When is the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival?

The Festival is held annually in Woodburn, Oregon. This year you can get tickets to the festival from March 17 to April 30, 2023. Advance tickets are a must and online ticket sales start March 1, 2023. As you consider dates that work well for your family, remember that Mother Nature is in charge of when the tulips bloom. So if you’re heading out to get pictures to send to the grandparents, it’s best to avoid the first week (or so) of the blooming season.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival with Kids?

We’ll let you in on a little secret—crowds are smaller during the work week, so this is an ideal time to come if you have busy little ones or don’t like negotiating space with others. The gardens are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, so you’ve got plenty of time to make it down from the city, explore, and still be home in time to make dinner.

What to Expect During a Weekday Visit

The festival is open daily throughout the week. During the weekdays you can wander through the tulip fields, and check out the four-acre garden bursting with over 100 varieties of tulips. Take the kids on a tulip train ride, a leisurely, cushioned ride around the tulips with plenty photo stops—better make room on your phone. The train runs from noon to 5 p.m. during weekdays and is an extra cost. Or just let them run in the children’s play area on a lovely spring day. The play area includes play structures kids of all ages will love, the famous duck races, and even old-fashioned tire swings to catch air on.

Weekend Activities at the Festival

The weekends bring extras to the fest that make it worth navigating the eager crowds. Plus weekend hours are a little longer (8 a.m.-7 p.m.) so you’ve got more Your kids can watch wooden shoe-making or steam tractor demonstrations, or you can wander through the crafter marketplace and peruse the offerings from various vendors. Up the excitement with a balloon animal or let your little athletes get their energy out in the jump tents or the rock wall. For adrenaline addicts, there are even carnival rides. It’s easy to spend a whole weekend playing and relaxing on the farm.

But if you ask us, the got air balloon rides (available only on the weekends) are the big draw. If you are interested in seeing the tulip fields from above, there are a number of balloonists you can call directly and book flights with. Please remember, the rides are weather dependent.

Where to Eat at the Festival

One of the things that makes this festival family-friendly is that families can pack their own picnics and eat onsite with the kids. It's a great way to save money. But if you'd prefer to head out the door without a ton of prep time, there are plenty of tasty options available at the festival. Alotta Wood Fire Pizza will sell you a slice, Real Mexican Food will be available, and who doesn't want something from Gimme Some Sugar? You will also find coffee and smoothies and so much more.

Wine Tasting & Tours

Whether you're looking for a date idea or you've got grandparents or a friend who wants to come along and watch the kids, you don't want to miss the Tulip Fest's wine tasting and tour opportunities. Enjoy a glass of one of the estate-grown wines or a glass of local beer or cider at the vineyard, or go on a wine farm tour at the scheduled ticket time. There are three different tours you can go on: The Estate Wine Tour, the Light Wine Tour, and the Red Wine Tour. All are worth it.

Other Things to do in the Area

Extend your fun beyond the fest by joining one of the festival-related events. Check out the Wooden Shoe Vineyards for some wine-tasting fun. There are also a number of fun runs to check out including the Tulip Trail Run.

What to Bring & Wear

Make sure you get the most out of your Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival experience by showing up prepared. Spring is wet in Oregon so bring boots and a raincoat in case you get caught in a downpour. It’s also wise to bring a dry change of clothes for the kids or at least dry socks if you want to keep your diaper bag uncluttered. Snacks are a must. If you have little ones, pack the stroller. It’s bound to come in handy. Don’t forget your camera! You will get some incredible shots no matter what the weather does.

Insider Tip: This is a dog-friendly event. Your pooch must be leashed, but is bound to love the event as much as you do.

Dates: Mar. 17-Apr. 23, 2023
Cost:
$10-$40/weekday pass; $15-$55/weekend pass; $60/season pass; all tickets include parking

Oh, the weather outside is frightful…luckily, these toddler coats make getting them ready a little less scary

First things first: the best toddler coat is the one they’ll put on and keep on. Toddlers are squirmy little creatures. They’re movers and shakers and they can’t stand being restricted. Winter gear typically makes having a full range of movement hard (think Randy in A Christmas Story), so we have to switch tactics and find toddler coats they won’t mind wearing, even if it means not being able to contort themselves into a pretzel as much as they’d like.

From rough-and-tumble to soft and sweet, these toddler coats are super cute and durable. We have layers for the dinosaur dedicated, we have outer space outerwear, and options for the chilly frilly lovers. And hey, there’s a good chance they’ll make getting your little ones ready to face the elements easier!

7 Mind-Blowing Uses for Umbrellas You Haven’t Tried Yet

10 Ways to Encourage Your Kids’ Imagination

Long-Term Play Projects to Keep Them Busy All Winter

I can see you reading the title: “The Secret to Getting Kids Dressed & Out the Door in 10 Minutes or Less.”

Yeah, right. You must  think this is a joke, right? I must be kidding you. How in the world can any parent get multiple children dressed and out the door in under 10 minutes? In truth, I’ve never been able to do it. But—I am going give you my suggestions anyway (which may absolutely work or not at all) and at minimum, I am going to make you laugh, okay?

So, here you go: The Great Big Secret to Getting Your Kids Dressed and Out of the Door in Under 10 Minutes. (Drum roll, please…)

Make them dress themselves. Tell them you are leaving in 10 minutes, and if they are not ready in time you will leave without them. Then, you actually have to leave without them.

Crap. Scratch that. If your kiddos are young you will get in trouble for leaving them in the house alone. Okay, maybe simply walk out the door at the 10-minute mark, hide around the side of the house and spook them when they frantically come out to see if you truly left without them.

You’re telling me that’s mean? Okay. Fine. Don’t do that either.

Okay, I’ve got some new (better) suggestions, and ones that are more realistic and kind. (Thank goodness.)

  1. Layout clothes ahead of time. Whether you pick out their clothes or they do, lay out all outfits for the next day the night before. This simply eliminates the frantic search for your child’s favorite pair of leggings.
  2. DON’T FORGET THE SOCKS. I don’t know why and I don’t know how but each and every time I lay out my kids’ clothes, I forget to lay out socks and then I can never find matching ones.
  3. Nothing needs to match. Be fine and even encourage your child to wear mismatched items when a match cannot be found (which is every day in my house).
  4. Time checks. Give your children time countdowns and embellish about how close they are to the deadline. Yes, it is totally fine to lie to your children when you are trying to get them out of the house on time.
  5. Don’t leave your house. Okay, that’s not really doable, but try to leave it less if you can. If you leave your house less, my thinking is that you and your children will likely both be bored and more inclined to put a little pep in your step when it is time to go somewhere.
  6. Don’t dress them. If you leave the house naked, things will move forward a lot faster, right? Oh, that’s not allowed? Okay, how about don’t stress how they get dressed. Your princess wants to be Elsa today? Great. Let it the freak go and let her do her. Your son doesn’t want to wear his rain coat? Let him get wet and learn for himself. The point is for each and every battle in which you choose not to fight, you are one step closer to the front door and leaving your home in a timely manner.
  7. Forget the freakin’ deadline. Because no matter how many of my suggestions (or suggestions from a real expert) you follow, you will rarely meet it. Drop the anxiety and the guilt.

Well, that’s all the advice I’ve got for you. Hope it helps, but it probably won’t. I’ll see you at the next event to which we are both invited. I’ll be there late and so will you and we can commiserate—or better yet, celebrate together in the fact that we are winning at parenting by not giving a hoot about ever trying to get out of the house in under 10 minutes.

Between your kids tumbling from couch to couch and juggling after school schedules, parenting can sometimes feel like a circus. Take the night off from your own acrobatic feats and head to Cirque du Soleil’s newest touring show, Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities. Playing under the iconic blue-and-yellow Big Top at Marymoor Park through March 22, this kid-friendly show will ignite your imagination inside a mechanical world where curios come to life, contortionists twist and turn on a mechanical hand and dinner parties literally get turned upside down.

photo: Martin Girard/shootstudio.ca

The Show
Kurios serves up everything you know and love about Cirque du Soleil performances from high flying acts that make you gasp in wonder to dazzling sets with the most intricate of details. But, what makes this imaginative show so thrilling for kids is the combination between stunning acrobatics you’ve come to expect from Cirque and more subtle, humorous acts that showcase shadow puppetry and yo-yo masters.

 photo: Martin Girard/Cirque du Soleil

From act to act, your kids will be transported into a magical world of curiosity as they marvel at “siamese twins” hanging in the air by straps soaring above the stage, an acrobat who is suspended in mid-air as she rides her bike upside down and an artist who tells a story with just his fingers as his shadow is projected onto a hot air balloon screen. The entire show is set to music (the musicians are located behind the stage) and an Industrial Revolution-inspired set that includes a mechanical hand, a train and a raised walkway.

While your kids may not totally grasp what each character represents or the intricacies of the show’s storyline, there’s no doubt their curiosity will be awakened by the thrilling acrobatics and amazing stunts.

photo: Martin Girard/shootstudio.ca

Good to Know:

• The show runs 2 hours and 10 minutes including a 25-minute intermission and strollers are not allowed in the arena.

• While a couple of toddlers were spotted in the audience, Kurios is best suited for kids ages six and older.

• The rows of seats are very narrow meaning if kiddo needs a bathroom break in the middle of an act or you need to step outside, you’ll need to climb over everyone in your row to exit. We suggest scoring a seat at the aisle or the very first row in sections 200-204 where you won’t have anyone sitting in front of you.

• Restrooms are located outside the tent so bring along a rain coat or umbrella if the skies are unforgiving. During intermission the restroom lines can get long, so plan accordingly.

• Parking costs $15 (cash) per car.

• Refreshments and snacks are available when you enter the Big Top and are allowed at your seat. No outside food or drink is allowed.

• No photography (of any kind) is allowed inside the Big Top, so leave your fancy camera behind. If you want to grab a keepsake photo, bring your iPhone and grab a pic in front of the Big Top or inside the entrance tent.

• If you really want to impress your kids, purchase VIP tickets. Not only will you have awesome seats, but you will get to enjoy delish food one-hour before the show and at intermission and will get to take home a show program and souvenir photo.

If there’s one thing we hate most about the rain is donning our totally unflattering rain coat with an umbrella in-hand that always seems to get turned inside out from the wind, while trying to carry groceries to the car. Yes, we’re that mom who you drive by and think, I’m glad I’m not her right now. We may look like a hot mess (errrr…wet mess) but our kids on the other hand not only love the rain, but they make their rainy day gear look downright stylish. We love the rainy day styles out there from the bright polka dots to the too-cute umbrellas. Now, if only these sweet looks came in adult sizes.

Kelly, age 2.5 years, wearing a raincoat from Old Navy (last season), pants from Kohl’s, and her favorite yellow crocs. Kelly’s moms says, “It doesn’t rain here often enough – she only wore this coat twice before outgrowing it.” Sounds familiar.

Blake, age 4.5, is the superhero son of Red Tricycle Seattle Editor, Kristina. Kristina tells us, “Blake insisted on a Batman raincoat at Nordstrom today! We went in for new school shoes and came out with school shoes, a Batman cape coat and matching Batman boots! The coat has a full cape on the back and the batman emblem lights up when he moves!” Love the look? Click here to buy the coat and boots.

Sure, it doesn’t rain much in L.A. but that doesn’t stop the twin brother sister duo of our Los Angeles Editor, Meghan from modeling their rainy day gear. Jacob, age 4, is modeling his new Wippette umbrella and boots here, and Molly, age 4, is re-inacting Singin’ in the Rain with her Wippette umbrella here.

Steven, age 4, is enjoying the puddles with his Stephen Joseph raincoat, rain boots, and umbrella.
