Nothing sounds better in the summer than a cold scoop (or two, or three) of ice cream! With National Ice Cream Day coming up on July 18, Instacart decided to research the most popular flavors in the nation. Although vanilla is a perennial favorite, Americans had quite the range of flavor preferences!

Using purchase data, Instacart determined a top flavor for each state. The results? Moose Tracks, which features fudge, peanut butter cups and vanilla ice cream, took home the most popular flavor, coming out on top in 12 states. In a tight race for second place, Rocky Road, Green Tea, Coffee and Birthday Cake finished in a four-way tie.

The four corners of the country all had their distinctive loyalties. In the Pacific Northwest, Green Tea reigned supreme. In the Southwest, Rocky Road was the overwhelming favorite. In the Northeast, Coffee dominated and in the Southeast, Rum Raisin was the winner.

The Midwest overwhelmingly preferred Moose Tracks and a few states had unique favorites. Delaware preferred Cherry, Pennsylvania screamed for Mint Chip and New Mexico bought pints on pints of Chocolate Chocolate Chip.

No matter what flavor you prefer, you’re in good company. The average American consumes more than 22 pounds of ice cream and frozen desserts each year and July 18 is the perfect excuse for a chilly treat! (And other facts that will make your life a whole lot easier).

It occurred to me the other day that I am super wise.

It also occurred to me that by not sharing my savvy, I was depriving the people of Earth.

You may at this point ask yourself, “What about Mars, Irene? Don’t you care about the folks on other planets? So selfish.”

It’s complicated.

Although I have a level of concern about those populations, my worry is mostly centered around them coming to Earth and melting, eating, or unpleasantly probing my orifices.

So I will limit my advice to humans.

1. Every surface you touch is covered with poop.

Every couple of years or so news organizations across the country do us all a huge favor and show us, through searing exposés, the filth in hotel rooms.

According to one study, approximately 81-percent of surfaces swabbed in a hotel room had at least “some” fecal bacteria. But the most egregious surface was that of the TV remote control. Light switches weren’t much better.

This news is supposed to alarm and horrify us.  It does neither to me.  I’ll tell you why.

I accepted long ago that all surfaces on the planet are covered with poop. That’s right, ALL surfaces. Although, for some odd reason, headboards in hotel rooms are pretty clean.  This makes NO SENSE TO ME AT ALL. Come on. Think about it. That’s right…that’s what I’m thinking.

Apparently, if you liked to remain clean on vacation leap onto the headboard upon entering your hotel room.

Poop is everywhere.

And don’t even, “But Irene what about…” me. Yes, there is poop on your fine china. Yes, there is poop on your family portrait hanging above the fireplace.  And yes, there is poop in your casserole.

EWWWW!  GROSS!

Not really.

It’s just a fact. I don’t know how and why it travels everywhere and touches everything in spite of our handwashing and Clorox whipping, but it does. Most don’t wash their hands well and then they touch a package of Oreos at the store.

They don’t buy the Oreos…but you do.

You take the package home and eat a couple or thirteen.

Then you notice the family portrait is off-kilter.

You adjust the picture.

BAM! POOP ON THE PIC.

It’s no biggie. By all means, keep things clean but just know in your heart that it’s futile. It’s unbelievably freeing.

2. You are not special.

We are told so many lies as children:

  • Santa ate the cookies!
  • Amusement parks are closed on the weekends.
  • You are special.

The last one is the worst, although to this day I still think, “It’s Saturday so everything fun is closed. Sigh.”

You are not special. None of us are.

We all do the same stupid stuff like eating the last of the peanut butter but sticking the jar back in the cupboard because ‘I’m sure someone would like a smear of PB on their raisin. I’ll just leave it.’

We all think the same stupid thoughts like, ‘I’m glad I don’t have tons of money and fame. That would be such a hassle!”

We all feel bad that we’re not deeply grateful for having legs. “I can’t believe I’m complaining about going upstairs. People without legs WISH they could climb a flight of stairs to grab the eczema cream!”

We’re all the same. I mean, you’re unique, but not special. There has never been anyone born that was just like you. This is true. But understanding that we are all basically the same on a human level makes it much easier to accept each other. Good or bad we aren’t that different.

3. You won’t get 90-percent of the stuff you want in life.

As a human being, you are going to try to get a bunch of stuff.

Some of this stuff will be worth pursuing: High school bad-boys, becoming a partner in your law firm, the perfect potato chip.

Some will not be worth your time: High school bad-boys, a flat tummy, a pleasant personality.

I’ve tried for so much stuff in my lifetime and most of the stuff I don’t get. (Don’t even get me started on Hello Dolly-1986. Robbed! )

Here’s what I didn’t understand about the Hello Dolly fiasco that I know now. That is life.

Buckle up, Irene! It gets way worse. You won’t get most stuff. But it’s ok…you’ll get some! And some is pretty sweet when you’ve lost a bunch.

You are not entitled to anything. I don’t care who you are. You gotta take it in the gut like the rest of us. Once you understand this, it’s not as shocking when Brandon Keaffaber makes-out with you at one party, and then blows you off at the next.

That’s just life.

Now go forth and enjoy a more carefree existence.

I'm a mom of teenagers.  I cry.  A lot.  I also laugh when I'm too tired to cry.  So basically, I'm always either crying or laughing.  I can find the humor in most everything...except (fill in with whatever you find upsetting).  Just want to make you laugh.

So what ice cream awesomeness did consumers dig (or rather, scoop) in 2019? According to Häagen-Dazs’ stats, the number one flavor of the year was Cookies and Cream.

The other top five winners (in Häagen-Dazs Shops) were Vanilla, Dulce de Leche, Belgian Chocolate and Chocolate. Not only did Dulce de Leche land in the top five for 2019, but it’s also part of a growing caramel craze. Along with Caramel cone, the two sweet selections jumped in popularity this past year.

When it comes to most searched for flavors, the top five winners for 2019 were:

  1. Coffee
  2. Chocolate Peanut Butter
  3. Rum Raisin
  4. Green Tea
  5. Strawberry

As if these frozen treats aren’t enough, Häagen-Dazs also introduced a boozy selection of spirits-inspired flavors. From Amaretto Black Cherry Almond to Bourbon Vanilla Bean Truffle, these playful picks may just turn up on next year’s top five lists!

If you’re wondering which RXBAR flavors have been recalled, we’ve got answers. The bars, which were sold at Trader Joe’s and other retailers across the United States and Canada, were voluntarily recalled in December 2019. But after an investigation, the makers of RXBAR expanded the recall to include several additional varieties. Representatives from RXBAR did not immediately return Red Tricycle’s request for comment.

This recall was issued after finding the potential for some bars to contain undeclared peanut allergens. If you or your kiddo has a peanut allergy, you absolutely need to know about this.

Recall Description: Select RXBAR & RXBAR Kids Flavors

The initial recall in December included the Chocolate Sea Salt and Coconut Chocolate varieties. The expanded recall expands this list to include the following flavors.

  • Chocolate Sea Salt

Why the RXBARS Were Recalled

Again, this is not a bacterial or other microorganism contamination issue. The affected bars may have undeclared peanut-containing ingredients in them, making them potentially dangerous for anyone with a peanut allergy.

Consumer complaints about allergic reactions, following the December recall, led to a deeper investigation. This revealed the potential for peanut products in a specific ingredient supplied by a third party. As of the current recall, RXBAR has changed suppliers.

How to Tell If Your RXBARS Are Affected

If you have one of the RXBAR or RXBAR Kids flavors listed above, check the “Best By” date. The recalled bars all have “Best By” dates from Jan. 14, 2019 to Oct. 19, 2019.

Along with the flavor and “Best By” date, check the UPC code. Vie a complete list of the affected bars’ UPC codes on the FDA’s website here.

What Can Parents Do

If you, your child, a family member or anyone else who will eat one of the bars you have has a peanut allergy, throw the RXBAR away. Anyone with a peanut allergy should not eat the recalled bars. Contact the retailer where you bought the bar for a refund or replacement.

A brand new fast casual sandwich bar flaunts the most famed of all nut butters, in varieties and variations only a peanut butter zealot would dream up. Spread PB has just opened featuring a build your own sandwich bar—and your little picky eater is about to go nuts.

Some Enchanted Mealtime
Here’s a lesson in never pooh-pooh your kid’s culinary day dreams, no matter how outlandish. They may be the germ of a future dynasty.  For Katie Kerr and Dustin Alpert, destiny was sealed in sixth grade. Across from the lunch table they sat, each clutching their very own version of peanut buttery bliss. Fourteen short years later, these two would honor their protein of choice by dedicating a restaurant to its glory, in all the possible permutations and combinations.

Lunch Gone Nuts
Graham crackers, coconut, granola, Nutella. You name it, they’ve nutted it. Spread PB favorites range from the classics (one base, one spread, one jelly—we’ll get there) to the downright well, nutty (think, banana sushi).   But the premise is simple and the outcome is delicious. They’ve made their peanut butter favorites. And they’ve invited you discover yours.

Here’s How It Works
A line-up of their sandwich spreads and fillers are listed and ready for selecting. The Worlds Greatest Wrapper (tortilla filled with a spread, sliced apples, raisins and granola, honey drizzle) might have to wait till the next visit, because the Berry Berry Nuts and Bananas (blueberry bread, a spread, layered with strawberries, blueberries, and bananas) might take top honors on your first trip. No surprise, your monkeys will also go bananas for Give Me S’more (a base, a spread, graham cracker crumbles and marshmallows – can you blame them?). The Elvis goes off the rails with a base, a spread, honey, bananas, and, hold your applause, bacon.  Diet Starts Monday is just decadent with dark chocolate, peanut butter, nutella, and chocolate chips. And that’s to name just a few: the list is impressively all-inclusive, pickles to potato chips.

DIY Decadence.
Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Pick your base.
Breads (try the blueberry, or the cinnamon raisin) to bagels, tortillas to celery sticks. They are not the main event, rather the best supporting layer.

Step 2: Pick your spread.
Now you’re in for some fun. Selections range from the Plain PB to Coconut PB, Maple Bacon PB, Dark Chocolate PB, to Cinnamon Raisin PB. Maple Almond Butter. Banana Chunky PB.  There are many more where those came from, but they might necessitate a spoiler alert. (Hello, White Chocolate Blueberry Peanut Butter?!? Awe nuts. Spoiled it.)

Step 3: Choose two toppings.
Alright, this is where the true sandwich greats show themselves. Will your wunderkind pick pickles? (They might.) Pretzels? (Probably.) Blueberries? Apples? Marshmallow fluff? Welcome to after school snacking Nirvana.

Im-pressed.
Whatever your sandwich picks, try it panini’d. It’ll get everything a bit more smushy and gooey. Translation, kid irresistible. Kerry and Dustin will likely be there (look for the smiles beneath the trademark trucker caps) and they’re full of fabulous recommendations. Remember, this peanut butter playground is their brainchild. If you’ve dreamed it, they can probably peanut and panini it.

You Can Snack If You Want To
Not feeling full throttle sandwich? Have a snack. The Spread Sampler comes with your choice of three nut butters and two snack bases (pretty much the snack you’d make everyday if you had the patience). Or maybe Smiles is more what you’re in the mood for. Featuring apple slices layered with a spread and marshmallows in between, it is literally the (bread-free) snack that smiles back.

Drink Your Protein Too
Peanut Butter was born to smoothie. Based on kid reactions to the sipable stuff here, we’re predicting a large expansion in the future of this portion of the menu, but the few that currently showcase are a fun way to sip and sate. Start with the Peanut Butter and Jealous, which largely mimics the PB&J classic combo, only through a straw. The Black and Tan and CocoNutty do additionally delicious things to peanut butter and bananas.

Peanut Butter Birthday Party
Yep. They’re ready when you are. They’ll come with their cart and sandwich to your hearts content. Watch how toddlers can form a line to the left when supplied with ample motivation.

Picnic tables, Peet’s adjacent, (because for tired parents, the only thing that goes better with PB&J than milk is coffee), cozy Adirondacks and a completely kid welcoming vibe. Katie and Dustin are dynamite hosts, and have clearly done their protein passion proud. Once just jelly’s jam, it’s fun to sandwich in the land where peanut butter reigns supreme. Grab the kids and go get a little gooey.
