This MLK Day, explore King’s impact and legacy with the kids

On January 16 we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Not only is it a day to remember one of our nation’s most revered individuals, but it’s also a time to reflect on how we can all lead our lives with love, respect, and kindness for our fellow humans. It’s also a prime opportunity for parents to explore Black history in Portland. If you’re looking for a way to make this day off from school a day on, Portland has a variety of events scheduled throughout the month to commemorate Dr. King and his legacy. It’s a wonderful time for families to engage, learn, and give back to their community.

Please remember to bring water bottles and wear rain gear and clothes that won't mind a little mud. Gloves, tools, and light refreshments will be provided. All ages are welcome.

“Traveling with kids is so easy,” said no one ever. If you’ve ever boarded an airplane with a baby, you know that the amount of stuff a small person needs is in inverse proportion to their size. Diapers, wipes, a change of clothes for all parties, snacks, a breast pump, and more and more and more—they all need to fit into your carry-on bag. And you want everything to be easily accessible.

That’s where No Reception Club comes in to save the day.

Co-founders Gemma Gaisano Ng and Daniel Ng are parents themselves and they know the struggle it is to travel with little ones—the constant digging through your diaper bag to find the paci clip or favorite toy. No Reception Club just released its first two products, the Getaway Bag and the Sidekick, and you’re going to want to get in on the kickstarter pronto!

The sleek Getaway Bag speaks to Gemma’s fashion background as it is totally functional with design features you don’t see in other family travel bags. The narrow shape makes it easy for any parent to carry and the stylish black exterior makes it more of an everything bag than a diaper bag. Gemma and Daniel worked with a bag designer with 20+ years of experience and you can definitely tell when you see the bag in person (which we did!).

Here’s what you’ll love about the Getaway Bag:

  • Instant Side Access into the bag’s two largest compartments, making it easier and faster to retrieve what you need.
  • Flexible Organization System with 2 “shelves” that velcro securely into the main compartment. Create 1, 2 or 3 sections. based on your needs.
  • Odor-Resistant Emergency Compartment at the base to isolate and contain any “accidents” along the way. It’s waterproof too.
  • An Essentials Compartment for the quickest side-access to critical items including diaper changing essentials—it also perfectly fits Sidekick!
  • Parent Pockets in the hood, front, and back panels to store everything you personally need like a laptop, passports, money, snacks and more.

The Sidekick is awesome for so many reasons:

  • It’s a totally discreet waist or shoulder pack that fits all the diaper-changing essentials.
  • The magnetic back flap gives you one-handed access to your wipes pouch inside. This totally brilliant feature makes it so you can use one arm to muscle your squirmy toddler on the changing table while accessing wipes with the other hand.
  • There’s an included changing pad.

How to Get Your Getaway Bag and Sidekick
Get in on the Kickstarter that launches on July 13, 2021. It wraps up August 15, 202`1 with products shipping out in time for the holidays.

22 Amazing Packing & Travel Hacks to Try on Your Next Trip

14 Airports That Make Traveling with Kids Easier

Photo: Karissa Whitman

I was four months postpartum. I was struggling with nursing my son, but we had a wedding we had already committed to going to. I was so nervous because I was worried I’d lose my breastmilk supply for not nursing for so long. I spent the entire day packing myself a little bag full of my supplies. My breast pump, bottles, an icepack inside an insulated cooler for my milk, my nipple cream, etc…I was packed and ready.

I needed to run to the bathroom real quick and figured “Hey, why not rely on my sweet reliable awesome husband to put my bags in the car?” You know, I trusted him so much I didn’t even think to check all the bags made it into the trunk.

About 25 minutes into our drive, I told my husband I’d probably have to pump upon arriving and once again before the reception starts. His response, “Well, did you bring your pump?” I looked at him and said, “Well duh, you packed the bags in the car, right?” Nope. He only grabbed one bag. My purse. Which, thanks hunny, I did need that. But I really needed the pump more.

At this point, the panic started to set in. This was our first long outing without my son. It was about 50 miles away from home. And already late at night. Once I calmed down, I figured I could just run to a local Target or Walmart and pick up a little cheap hand pump. Well get this, we get to Target, run in, and they were sold out of hand pumps. The next best thing was a $100 electric pump.

At this rate, I was thinking I could just grab some bottles, a little cooler and manually express myself. We were now running about 15 minutes late to this wedding we had already driven so far to get to and decided that would be the plan. During the first “manual” pump, I sat in the car all by myself with my husband’s shirts hanging on the windows for some privacy. I was trying so hard to express anything but just kept getting a drop, drop, drop. I never even had a letdown, yet my breasts felt so full and engorged by this rate.

I sat in the car and shed a few tears, I mean come on, can ya blame a girl with breasts full of milk who is pumpless and it’s the first long outing away from her baby? Talk about the worst-case scenario. I tried going back inside and running some paper towels under warm water to try and warm compress, but that didn’t work either.

Looking back I think I was so stressed it definitely played into my ability to have a letdown. Also looking back, I will never let my husband pack my pump again, well I probably will, but that trust is hard to regain. I mean, lesson truly learned. By the time we got home that night (and yes, we ended up leaving early), I was able to nurse my son and relieve all the pain and pressure from the milk.

So new mama, my tip to you? Take a moment to double-check that you’ve packed your breast pump and that it’s also in the car.

It’s time to dust off the driving gloves and say sayonara to the city because a just-opened drive-through adventure is calling. It’s a close encounter of the animal kind, where you and the kids, tucked safely in your car, get up close and personal with bison, moose and caribou who are roaming free. Start your engines!

Buckle Up

courtesy Northwest Trek

Northwest Trek’s Wild Drive is probably the most fun your fam will have in the car this year. The new program gives families a chance to be part of a car caravan that travels through the park’s 435-acre Free-Roaming Area. Each guided tour is led by an experienced naturalist, who shares entertaining tidbits and facts via an app you download to your phone. That’s right, you’ll have all the educational entertainment your kids need piped right to your car. Plan to spend about an hour on this all-car-all-the-time tour you won’t soon forget.

Shift into Gear

courtesy Northwest Trek

As you make your way through the grassy meadows and forested hillsides, the kids should be on the lookout for the eight Pacific Northwest native animals that call the park home. We’re talking Roosevelt elk, mountain goats, caribou, big horn sheep and elusive moose that take a keen eye to spot. Don’t forget the bison, who always seem to steal the show. They love to sit close to the road and pose for pictures. Who knows, with the springtime baby boom, you might even spy a bison calf close to mom along the way. The cars will move slowly through the grounds so you’ll have plenty of time to see the animals that are out and about. Clearly the hardest part of this trip is deciding which parent has to drive and keep their eyes on the road.

Safety First

Sean O-Neill via flickr creative commons

Be reassured this adventure puts health and safety first, as every aspect can be no-contact, if you choose. Tickets are purchased in advance online, and are shown to an attendant through your car window. Staff will wear masks (you can too!), and stay socially distanced from cars. And other than a possible pit stop, there’s no need to get out of the car or come in contact with anyone other than your car mates.

What to Bring

courtesy Northwest Trek

Unlike a typical visit to Northwest Trek, this adventure is all about car time, and that means being prepared. Put food and drink at the top of your list, as eating while you make your way through the park is totally fine (just don’t feed the animals). Hand sanitizer, masks and any other safety items you would normally pack during this time come next. Finally, plan some silly road trip games and activities to keep the kids busy on the way down and back.

Pit Stop

courtesy Northwest Trek

If your crew needs a break from car time, consider packing a picnic or getting out for an easy hike. For a picnic, try Spanaway Park, just off of Highway 7, outside Tacoma. It sits along a lake, so you can eat with a view, and there’s plenty of room to stretch your legs. Remember restrooms and playground equipment are closed here. Families can also check out Nisqually State Park, a little beyond Northwest Trek. It’s a smaller, little-known state park, so socially distancing along the riverside trails should be a cinch. Remember to pack your Discover Pass for this one.

Good to know:
1. Cell reception can be spotty at the park, so download mobile tickets and the audio app you need for the tour to your device before you head out.

2. Plan to arrive 15-20 minutes before your tour starts. There’s no joining the group once they’ve departed.

3. Families will have limited access to restrooms at the park before and after the tour.

4. Car capacity maxes out at eight people for this experience.

5. Some time slots are already sold out, so if you want in, get your tickets soon.

For many parents, all they want for Christmas is the gift of health. Or to put it another way, parents are trying to find ways to prevent their family from getting the cold or flu over the holidays. That really would make it ‘the most wonderful time of the year, wouldn’t it?

After all, who wants to spend the holidays in a doctor’s office? For example, did you know that the clipboard pen at a doctor’s office has 46,000 more germs than the inside of a toilet bowl? Not only that, but according to a 2017 survey by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, waiting room surfaces aren’t cleaned 94.2 percent of the time. Do you really want to take a 6.8 percent chance with your health?

If you’re a parent and you want to protect your family from the cold and flu, going to a doctor’s office is the last place you want to go. Even though it might sound counter-intuitive, you run the risk of exposing your children and those with compromised immune systems to more germs and making mild cold symptoms go from from bad to worse.

So as a doctor treating thousands of patients during cold and flu season: what’s my advice? Don’t fret—there is a solution to the threat of the waiting room.

Avoid the waiting room (if you can).

Given all the germs lurking in the furniture, toys and doorknobs of the doctor’s waiting room, the best option for germ prevention this cold and flu season is to avoid the waiting room. Instead, opt for a virtual care visit with a telemedicine provider. Within five minutes, you and your children can be seen by a board-certified physician without even having to leave the comfort of your own home.

Wash your hands and sanitize often.

When it comes to washing your hands, you can never have too much of a good thing. Whether it’s in a waiting room, or at any time when you or your child are sick, it’s a best practice to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after sneezing, touching your face, or after touching surfaces in communal areas like playgrounds. Parents should also be sure to sanitize their hands after holding their child to prevent the spread of germs from skin on skin contact.

What to do if you STILL get sick?

So let’s say that even after you take all of the proper precautions to keep your kids and your family healthy, you still get sick. What can you do to prevent your family from getting even sicker?

Wear a mask.

It might sound like overkill, but wearing a surgical mask can help prevent the spread of germs, especially when you’re surrounded by other patients who are contagious. If you have to visit a doctor’s office, I recommend bringing your own mask or asking for a mask at the reception desk to help cover your mouth and nose. Without it, it’s easy to inhale the germ droplets around you from other people’s coughs and sneezes.

Keep your kids off the floor.

Even with regular vacuuming and spot cleaning, commercial carpeting in healthcare settings can easily trap allergens, dust, and even germs from the staff, patients, and visitors. If your medical reception area contains carpeting, rugs, or floor mats, be sure that your children are waiting on the chairs or in their stroller versus sitting on the floor with their toys to avoid the germs trapped in the carpet.

Bring your own reading material and toys.

Hard surfaces like tables and chairs in the waiting room are usually wiped down on a regular basis but the magazines, books and toys on those tables tend to be lifted up and not wiped down in the cleaning process. To avoid the dog-eared magazine pages and used toys, we suggest bringing your own reading material and toys for your children to help make the wait go by faster.

This year, the healthcare industry has seen 36,000 people die and more than 200,000 people hospitalized because of the flu. But preventing the cold and flu is totally manageable. Remember that it’s best to avoid waiting rooms, sanitize your hands and surfaces you come into contact with regularly, wear a mask if you can, and avoid touching surfaces and items in communal areas. Thankfully with the advent of health technology and the ability to see your family from home through a virtual care visit, you don’t have to risk picking up germs in the waiting room, and you’re empowered to take your health in your hands.

My name is Dr. Tony Yuan and I am a physician at Doctor On Demand, the nation’s leading virtual care provider. Over the course of my career, I've treated tens of thousands of patients as an emergency physician and have been practicing emergency medicine in California for over 17 years.

So what do Dunkin Donuts and the Royal Wedding have to do with one another? Well if you’re thinking that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be serving the frosting-covered doughy rounds of goodness at their reception, you’d be wrong. But you can have a dozen or so of your very own love-themed donuts at your royal wedding watch party!

Yep, Dunkin’ Donuts is releasing a special limited-edition donut in honor of the royal nuptials. The “Royal Love Donut” is a heart-shaped donut that comes with a jelly filling. As if that’s not enough donut love, it’s frosted with chocolate icing and topped with a strawberry drizzle. Yum!

Oh, but the royal wedding celebration doesn’t stop at a heart-shaped donut. Dunkin’ Donuts is going all out for this super-special occasion. Select guests will have the opportunity to take a Dunkin’ Donut-colored (pink and orange) horse-drawn carriage trip through NYC’s Central Park. (And they’ll get to enjoy “Royal Love Donuts” on their ride too.)

Continuing with donut retailer’s royal theme, IRL princess (and Real Housewife of New York) Carole Radziwill will kick off the event by taking the ceremonial first carriage ride.

If you’re wondering why Dunkin’ Donuts is serving up a royal donut on this side of the Atlantic, Dunkin’ Brands Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Nigel Travis, said in a press release, “As the U.S. donut leader, we love helping our guests make special occasions both big and small even sweeter with fun donut designs and flavors. The Royal Wedding represents optimism, happiness and joy, thus is a perfect opportunity for our brand to celebrate. We hope all donut lovers, royalty or not, will enjoy the new Royal Love Donut next week.”

The “Royal Love Donut” will be available at Dunkin’ Donuts stores from May 14 through May 20.
