Odds are, you’re a little out of practice in planning vacations. You may have even added an extra person to your family since your last getaway! Don’t stress. Planning your dream summer trip is as simple as asking yourself a few questions:

With over 30 unique brands of hotels across the country, Marriott Bonvoy has something for every family getaway. Find your home away from home now!

Who?

The first part of planning is deciding who is coming with on this vacay. If you're planning a family trip you'll be bringing your kids, but are you going to invite grandparents or other extended family members? Depending on the ages of your children, you may even consider planning a trip with another family that has kids the same age.

What?

Next, you'll want to figure out what type of vacation you're planning. Are you wanting to disconnect from tech and spend time outdoors? Are you hoping you and your kids will learn something on this trip? Is relaxation a must or a maybe? Narrowing down the type of trip you want to take will make it easier to plan out the small details.

Where?

You know the type of vacation you want, now it's time to pick a locale! Do you want to fly or do you need somewhere within driving distance? Are you wanting to hit up a popular destination or go off the beaten path? We've teamed up with Marriott to help you pick your next getaway and fall in love with family travel. Make planning your dream vacay a little easier with our "Where Should You Vacation Next" quiz!

When?

You’ll need to work around your school, work and life schedules, of course, but you’ll also want to take into account if there are certain dates that are best for the location you’re headed to. Is there a peak season the area is known for? Are there festivals you want to be sure to see—or sure to avoid? Before you book, do a quick search for the dates you are planning on to get the lay of the land.

Why?

Planning a family vacation can be stressful. When you’re on the sixth page of family-friendly restaurant recommendations or just found out the tickets you wanted are sold out, remember why you planned this in the first place: to make lasting memories with your family.

Marriott’s family-friendly amenities make it easy to plan your next family adventure. Find your dream getaway today!

Desperate for some “me time” with the kids being home more often than usual? You’re not alone.

In an effort to find out which activities keep kiddos entertained the longest so parents can get their hands on a little alone time, experts at DIYs.com performed a quick study. The company sent 1,635 parents of children ages six to 10 years old a variety of craft activities and asked them to record the time and noise level of their kids while crafting.

photo: Sigmund via Unsplash

In addition to the variety of 27 common crafts sent to parents, DIYs.com also sent them a timer and a sound level meter so they could track the noise level and how far it reached. Once it reached 60 decibels, the level of an average conversation, they were asked to stop the timer, as the noise indicated the child was likely no longer engrossed in the activity.

Good news parents: there are a plethora of activities that will keep the kiddos entertained and quiet for at least half an hour! The results show that paper weaving, slime, origami and jewelry making all equaled 30+ minutes of quiet time.

data from DIYs.com

The study also shed light on the activities that sound good in theory, but really don’t equal a ton of alone time. Crafts like printing shapes, finger painting and lanyards are great for a quick activity, but not if you’re looking for an extended amount of quiet.

While not all activities are equal when it comes to keeping your kiddo’s attention span active, there are many benefits to crafting regardless. Stefan Gheorghe at DIYS.com shares that the activity enhances children’s decision-making skills, improves self-esteem and provides a source of relaxation––something we can all use now and then.

Cue up the Jimmy Buffet as it’s time for an island getaway (without leaving the states). Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs has tons to offer families looking for a little relaxation time and it is the perfect home base for all your Palm Springs and Joshua Tree adventures. We checked it out and have all the intel on everything we loved about it.

Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs

1. The resort's retro design and upscale amenities are the perfect combo for families.
As soon as we arrived at Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs, we could feel the relaxing island vibe taking over (and we needed it after hours in the car with the kids). The mid-century building encircles an inner pool area that was soon to become our home base for the weekend. Families can enjoy snacks and a game of cards at the many sitting areas in the expansive lobby. Even pets are welcome!

2. Dining options are convenient (and kid-friendly).
The resort really takes into consideration the fact that families are likely to be on the go when visiting and they offer both sit-down and grab-and-go dining options. The on-site restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner service that you can enjoy in the restaurant, on the adjoining patio or in your room. The kid meals were large enough to satisfy the teens in our crew and the chicken sandwich was a family favorite.

We particularly appreciated Joe Merchant's Coffee and Provisions for quick breakfast eats, to-go sandwiches, coffees and pizzas. They also had snacks and alcoholic beverages available. Swing by for your coffee and egg sandwich, and grab a sandwich to bring with you for your Joshua Tree visit.

Margaritaville Resort Palm Springs

3. The resort's spa is a must-visit.
Be sure your visit includes some time at the St. Somewhere Spa. This expansive space will (almost) make you forget you've brought your kids along with you as you fully immerse yourself in its relaxing ambiance. Book a Swedish massage or mani/pedi and be sure to bring your swimsuit with you so that you can enjoy the hot tub and sauna afterward.

Kate Loweth

4. You'll want to spend all day (and night) by the pool.
Be sure your schedule allows for sufficient pool time because it's where the kids will want to hang, we know it. Lounge chairs, a fire pit, cornhole games and an outdoor bar surround the pool that's in the center of the property. You can order food to eat poolside and enjoy views of the San Jacinto Mountains while the kids enjoy the water. There's even a hot tub for post-hike relaxation.

5. Family-sized rooms with a view.
The property offers tons of room options for families of all sizes from the luxurious, two-level Jimmy Buffet suite to traditional hotel rooms. Request a room that faces the pool and you'll get a balcony or patio with outdoor space to enjoy your morning coffee. We enjoyed the Hemisphere suite with a separate dining area, mini-fridge, microwave and coffee maker that made breakfast time easy, even when some wanted to sleep in.

Kate Loweth

6. Nearby adventures are plentiful.
The resort's prime location on the main drag in Palm Springs makes for a great location when you want to check out all that Palm Springs has to offer. Our robust guide to visiting Palm Springs with kids has tons of ideas for what to do in the area like hopping aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, going on a windmill tour and stopping by the Cabazon Dinosaur Museum.

We spent a full day visiting Joshua Tree National Park and would definitely recommend it to families. About an hour's drive from the resort, Joshua Tree gives you a glimpse of another world full of weirdly shaped plants and massive rock formations. You'll want to make sure you have gassed up your car before you go as gas stations are few and far between near the park entrance. Bring food, water and sunscreen with you and do yourself a favor and pay your entrance fee online before you head over. You'll save yourself a major headache and avoid the line at the park entrance.

We entered the park at the south entrance near Cottonwood Springs and exited at the west entrance. This route led us to many of the park's top destinations like the Cholla Cactus Garden and Skull Rock. We particularly liked stopping at the White Tank Campground and hiking to Arch Rock. It was a super easy hike and there were tons of boulders for climbing.

Kate Loweth

The Living Desert is also about an hour from the resort and we had a great time visiting the animals, hiking the trails and even feeding the giraffes. Pro tip: save the giraffes for the end of your visit (they are located near the entrance) if you need a way to motivate your kids through the day. Little ones will love the carousel and you'll definitely want to make note of any animal encounters they have scheduled as they provide a great way to meet some of the animals up close. The brand-new Rhino Safari is located right near the giraffes and a great way to see these majestic creatures in action.

The Best National Parks to Visit with Kids (& the Airbnbs to Book When You Do)

As rewarding as parenting is, a certain amount of stress comes with the territory (kids, job, home management!). The good news is that recent studies show that the benefits of meditation are abundant, and when practiced regularly, it can significantly reduce anxiety. If you would like more harmonious home life but aren’t sure where to begin, read on for a quick and easy guide on everything you need to know about how to meditate.

The Basics

Benjamin Child via Unsplash

What is meditation?
You can hardly walk down the street without catching a snippet of conversation or pass by a yoga studio with signage touting the wonders of meditation. As widely publicized as the practice is, meditation remains a mystery to many.

Simply put, meditation is a mind and body practice that involves focusing your attention on a single point of reference and away from distracting thoughts and external stimuli that cause anxiety. Parents are, by necessity, multitaskers. Moms and dads spend most of their time considering what happened earlier in the day and what has to be done tomorrow, all while cleaning the house and making work calls simultaneously. Meditation practice gives practitioners five, 10, 30 or more minutes a day of simply living in the present.

The Benefits of Meditation
Meditation is particularly effective at helping parents to manage stress levels, but studies show it offers other benefits. Along with addressing anxiety, it helps reduce and manage feelings of anger and hostility, as well as psychological distress. Regular meditation practice has also been shown to be good for heart health, as it lowers blood pressure—particularly for people at risk for high blood pressure. Additional benefits include relief from symptoms of IBS and colitis, help with insomnia and pain management.

Types of Meditation

Madison Lavern via Unsplash

Confusion over the practice of meditation often comes from the variations that exist. Here we break down the most common types of meditation that are practiced.

Mindfulness Meditation
By far one of the most popular approaches, the mindfulness practice is easy to start on your own. Practitioners find a quiet spot where they can sit comfortably and then, without judgment, take note of how their mind wanders. The idea is to quietly observe your thoughts without experiencing them as pleasant or unpleasant. This practice helps develop inner peace and emotional balance.

Breath Awareness Meditation
A variation on the Mindfulness Meditation, this version calls for the practitioner to find a quiet place to sit where they can remain undisturbed and focus their attention on the breath. This practice can include counting breaths or focusing on the sensations it creates in the body. When thoughts enter the mind or distract from the breath, practitioners are encouraged to gently and without judgment take note and shift their focus back to breathing. This practice improves concentration and reduces anxiety.

Mantra Meditation
Much like other forms of meditation, this practice involves finding a quiet place to focus attention on a mantra, phrase or word. The mantra can be chanted out loud or thought without being spoken. It is repeated for a set period, and when the mind wanders, it is brought back to the message. The most common mantra is the chanting of the word Om, which is commonly practiced in yoga classes. Words and phrases that are often favored for this meditation are "peace," "I am at peace," "let go" or "relax." This practice reduces stress, invokes the state of mind suggested by the mantra and helps the practitioner feel grounded.

Loving Kindness Meditation
Aptly named, this meditation is perfect for the burnt-out parent who doesn’t think they can make it through one more toddler fit or night without sleep. After a short time of focusing on breathing, the practitioner opens himself or herself to receiving love and sends messages of love and kindness to specific individuals and the global community. This practice helps reduce tension and cultivate feelings of acceptance, support and love.

Body Scan Meditation
This meditation is extremely effective at reducing stress. It is done either sitting or laying down and involves slowly scanning the body for hidden tension or stress. When you find a tensed muscle or unintended tightening in an area of your body, you concentrate on releasing it. One approach to this practice includes progressively tensing and relaxing the muscles as you move from head to toe.

Guided Meditation
During this practice, you receive guidance from a trained professional. This can be done in a class setting, with a counselor or while listening to a recorded audio file. The meditation may include music and will ask that you visualize or focus on cues given to you by your instructor. There are an array of guided meditations available depending on the result you are seeking. There are guided experiences designed to evoke relaxation and feelings of well-being or to help you achieve desired goals.

Getting Started
Time tends to be the biggest obstacle most parents fear will keep them from maintaining a regular meditation routine. But, research suggests that even 10 minutes a day makes a big difference in your stress level and your outlook on life. Follow these simple steps to starting your home meditation practice.

Step 1: The first step to starting your home practice is finding just 10 minutes of alone time a day (preferably at the same time each day). Some time opportunities to consider are first thing in the morning before the kids get up or while you are waiting for your coffee to brew. If you have a partner, have them give you a short break each day.

Step 2: Find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed for the duration of your practice. The bedroom or a reading nook works perfectly. Make sure you have pillows, cushions or a chair to ensure optimal relaxation.

Step 3: To remove concerns about time, set a timer that will let you know when you’ve reached your meditation goal. This will allow you to let go of that common distraction.

Step 4: Begin your practice. If you have chosen a breathing meditation, let your focus turn inward. If you have a guided meditation, begin your listening experience.

When your practice is over, slowly bring the focus back to your surroundings. Gently open your eyes and take your time getting up and moving around. Let the effects of the practice take hold.

Helpful Tips

Engin Akyurt via Unsplash

Life with kids is unpredictable; there are plenty of things that can get in the way of maintaining a regular meditation practice. The following tips will help you navigate the unexpected and commit to doing this very important exercise that is just for you.

1. While finding a quiet spot to sit or lie down for your practice is optimal, meditation can be done anywhere. Consider a five-minute meditation while waiting in the car to pick up the kids from school. Practicing while walking is another wonderful option. Put your fussy toddler in a stroller and go for a walk. Turn your attention to your breaths or the rhythms of your steps for a focal point.

2. If you feel you need some guidance, try one of these popular meditation apps. We especially like Headspace and Calm because they offer a variety of practices.

3. If you can’t fit 10 minutes in, then try for five. Consistency is key, and all efforts pay off.

It may feel selfish to take time just for you when you have little ones to look after, but remember, the healthier and happier you are, the healthier and happier your whole family will be—and that's just one of the reasons you should meditate. If finding time seems truly impossible, get your kids involved in their practice. You can let them learn along with you or check out some of the apps, games or meditation videos that are available for kids—like those on Hulu. Meditation is something everyone in your crew can do, and the result will keep your whole household feeling connected

I don’t know about you, but, since the start of COVID-19, my family has been in this strange twilight zone between all the rest we ever wanted and not enough rest at all. How is this limbo possible? It is true that the frenetic pace of our life has slowed substantially, but our new life patterns have allowed for later bedtimes, less specific downtime, “I’m bored” time, and a level of emotional fatigue that none of us has ever experienced.

Enter Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith and her amazing TED ideas post about the seven different kinds of rest you need. As I read through her post, not only did it immediately resonate with my own lived experience, I also started thinking about our kids and what rest means for them. So, here are my thoughts on how creativity and art can bring more rest to your family.

1. Physical Rest
The first kind of rest that Dr. Dalton-Smith talks about in her article. This is that typical, lying in bed for 8-10 hours per night type of rest. For kids, right now, the level of anxiety that is just in the air all around us can make sleep harder than normal. An arts strategy that can help bring a restful night of sleep is relaxation. In my house, after we read books, we do a 2-3 minute relaxation that starts with taking three deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. Then I tell a calming story about being in a beautiful place in nature, and we just visualize and imagine using all of our senses. If we are in a meadow, we might hear the birds chirping, smell the flowers around us and feel the sensation of the grass on the back of our legs. For more information on how to do relaxation, check out this blog.

2. Mental Rest
For adults, Dr. Dalton-Smith recommends scheduling a break in your workday every two hours or keeping a notepad nearby at bedtime to write down anything that is spinning in your mind. For kids, we can use mini art engagements throughout the day, to shift their minds from their school work to a relaxed mental state. Try keeping modeling clay near their work station if they are homeschooling. They can create an entire zoo of 2-inch animals over the course of a month!

3. Sensory Rest
This is all about a break from the onslaught of electronic inputs that have invaded our lives. For kids, getting them outside and away from screens is a critical step to finding sensory rest. Games are a big part of play and creativity, so try a backyard or neighborhood scavenger hunt where you assign six things they need to find in under 10 minutes—a rock that is a weird shape, a tree that is taller than a swing set, a leaf that is not green, etc.

4. Creative Rest
This is about allowing our brains to be inspired by beauty and art that already exists in the world instead of being in create mode. For our kids who are innovating and making all day and all night (even if it is on Minecraft) the opportunity to be inspired by beauty is important right now, even if it’s not in person. Maybe try a virtual museum tour?  Or watch some breathtaking dance?

5. Emotional Rest
Challenge yourself and your kids to express your emotions instead of hiding behind the mask of “I’m fine.”  For kids, using the arts is a perfect way for them to express their emotional reality. Dancing their anger, painting their frustration, writing their sadness are all creative strategies for bringing their experience to light in a safe and honest way.

6. Social Rest
This is permission to differentiate between the relationships that are giving you energy and those that are draining it. For kids, right now, this can be very challenging, because they have very few options (if any) for finding other kids to hang out with. For kids, I think social rest might look like taking a moment to engage in imaginative play as if we were their friends on the playground. Ask, “If we were with your friends right now, what would you be doing?” And then make that happen! Yup, you might have to pretend to be a five-year-old…I promise it will be worth it!

7. Spiritual Rest
The last type of rest that Dr. Dalton-Smith describes, is connecting to something greater than yourself. For some adults, that might look like prayer, meditation, or volunteering in the broader community. For kids, the art connection to Spiritual Rest could be creating posters to put up in the window with pictures that might brighten the day of anyone walking by. Or you could put on music and prompt your child to visualize an impressive place in nature that they have been (the beach, a forest, the Grand Canyon) and let the music and the image inspire them to paint a picture that represents the beauty of the world around us.

I hope these seven elements of rest are as helpful to you as they have been to me. I think we could all use some inner peace right now.
