If you’re heading out on a road trip soon and want to ensure that the trip will be spent making memories with the kids (screen-free fun in the car is possible!), then we’ve got a list of car games just for you. To make your journey as enjoyable as possible, you’ll want to print out this list of easy games to play in the car. They don’t require any special gear, there are no pieces to lose, and they’re actually fun for parents and kids alike. 1. The Alphabet Game: Find all the letters of the alphabet on things you pass along the highway. Variation: limit your finds to license plates or road signs to make it harder.
2. I Spy: This road trip classic has players starting with a vague clue like, “I spy something that moves” and the other players guessing from there. Only yes or no questions are allowed. Tip: put a limit to the number of questions so the rounds don’t go on for eternity.
4. Fortunately/Unfortunately: This story-creation car game for kids starts with a sentence like, “Mom came home with a chocolate cake.” The next person has to continue the story with fortunately like, “Fortunately, it had sprinkles on it.” Turn passes to the next person who uses unfortunately like, “Unfortunately, they were made of wax.” Hilarity ensues.
5. Story Volley: A similar game is story volley where you take turns creating a story back and forth between two (or more) players. This one can go on forever!
6. Open-ended Questions: Learn a little more about your car companions with this game where you can ask any question you like. Good ones to start with: What’s your favorite animal? What superpower do you wish you had? What TV character are you most like?
7. Alphabet Game (Version 2): The flow of this game is to use this phrase, “My name is ______ and I’m married to _______. We live in ______ and are shopping for ________.” All words have to start with the letter you are on like, “My name is Amy and I’m married to Al. We live in Arkansas and are shopping for apples.” Then you move on to B.
8. Letter, Word, or Sentence Guessing Game: For back seat players only, you have one kid draw a letter, word, or sentence (depending on age) on the other player’s back. Try to guess what was drawn.
9. License Plate Bingo: Using a little notebook to keep track, try and find all the state license plates. This game can carry over from road trip to road trip as who has ever seen a Hawaii plate outside of Hawaii? Parents should be ready to verify any rare sightings (to prevent cheating).
10. 20 Questions: This game has you thinking of an item while your opponent has to guess what it is. Limit your questions to 20 so you don’t go totally insane. This game knows how it is to travel with kids, clearly. For little kids, you can limit it even further to a category like animals.
11. The Name Game: Good for teens and tweens, this game has you name a celebrity like Oprah Winfrey and the next person has to take the first letter of that celebrity’s last name to start their turn and name another celebrity like Will Smith.
12. Hot Sauce or Chocolate: A variation on this or that, this game has you choose which item between two that you’d rather give up. Start with hot sauce or chocolate, choose one (clearly chocolate is the one to keep) and the next person has to add another to the pair like peanut butter so now you’re choosing between chocolate and peanut butter.
13. The Vacation Memory Game: This is a fun car game for kids! The first person starts with, “I’m going on a vacation and I’m going to bring . . . ” and then they choose an item like sunscreen. The second person starts, “I’m going on a vacation and I’m going to bring sunscreen and . . .” and chooses a second item like beach towels. The game continues until someone messes up the order and forgets an item. You can make it trickier by going in alphabetical order.
14. Count the Item: Choose an item like an American flag, tractor, or Starbucks sign and see how many your crew can find while on your journey.
15. Yes-No-Black-White: In this car game for kids, one player is the questioner and one the answerer. The questioner asks a question, trying to get the answerer to say the words “yes, no, black or white.” The answerer needs to answer verbally and truthfully, without using the forbidden words.
16. The Animal Name Game: The first player picks an animal like a squirrel. The second player has to pick an animal that starts with the last letter of the prior animal, like “lion.” And on and on!
17. Skittles: In this game, you are looking for the holy grail: the yellow vehicle. See one and yell, “Skittles!” and get one point. You may have to set your own rules about whether yellow farm equipment and buses count or should be excluded (as a fleet of school buses could cause an early end to your gameplay).
18. Cheers to the Governor (the kid version): This is a collaborative memory game you can play in the car to get to a certain number. So, if your goal is to get to 21, you start by counting one by one in order. You start with one rule, usually that 7 and 11 are switched (instead of saying 7 the person who is supposed to say 7 will say 11, and the person who should say 11 will say 7). If you make it through all the numbers, someone makes up a new rule (clap twice instead of saying three, make an animal noise instead of 15), and start counting back at 1 with the new rule. If someone misses a rule, you start back at one. The goal is to get to the point where all of the numbers are replaced with rules.
19. State Capitals: Good for all you geography fans, get the kids to list the state capitals. You can do it in alphabetical order or quiz style.
20. Cows and Graveyards: You get a point for every cow you spot on your side of the car. Spot a graveyard and lose all points.
21. Name That Tune: Play a snippet of a song from the radio and try and guess the song and artist.
22. Restaurant Race: Each player gets a restaurant like McDonalds, Taco Bell, or Burger King and players count how many of their restaurants they can find along the way.
23. Rock-Paper-Scissors: This is a classic hand game that’s a perfect game to play in the car. Two players shoot rock (fist), paper (flat hand), or scissors (the peace sign) on the count of 1,2,3… shoot! Paper beats rock, rock beats scissors, and scissors beats paper. Try the best of three, or just keep playing down the road.

There are many reasons to visit the downtown Brooklyn mall of City Point (the Alamo Drafthouse movie theater, Trader Joe’s, McNally Jackson bookstore, etc.). Yet another is DeKalb Market Hall, a food hall featuring vendors selling bites and beverages of all kinds. There is also a photo booth here, found right at the foot of the escalators. It’s $5 for a strip, and you can share to your social accounts right from the booth if you want.
The folks at Kiehl’s want you to capture how radiant their products make your skin look right in store. Head to the brand’s Meatpacking District location to capture your picture-perfect complexions.

4. UNIQLO Fifth Ave.
Shopping and taking pictures sounds like a match made in heaven, especially when you have the kids with you. (It’s a good way to keep them from getting bored.) We guess that’s what UNIQLO had in mind when it installed a photo booth inside its massive 89,000-square-foot flagship store on Fifth Ave. Take note!: It’s free for a strip of four pictures. (You will no doubt “pay” for the snaps with the purchase of some of the brand’s duds.) Also good to know: there’s a Starbucks inside the store and cell phone charging stations, so you could stay a while…
This spot goes by three names: “The Horseshoe Bar”, “Vazac’s”, and “7B”. On the outside it looks like a classic Lower East Side dive bar, because, well, it is. But it’s got more than that going for it on the inside. With a bar that’s actually shaped like a horseshoe, major LES cred and grittiness, this place has also made cameos in major films like the TheGodfather II, Crocodile Dundee, and The Verdict. Its latest star turn? In the incredible, dimension-bending Netflix series, Russian Doll.
Getting your kids ready to enjoy brunch at The Smith is as easy as “1, 2, cheese!” the restaurant’s Midtown, East Village, Lincoln Square, and NoMad locations all have photo booths for you to enjoy, with some located in the basement by the restrooms, and some, like in NoMad, actually in the restroom.
Is your face photo-ready thanks to kale and beet smoothies? If so, stop by Joe & The Juice to grab some healthy grub and snap a few photos in its photo booth (near the back of the shop). This is one of the more spacious juice/café spots in NYC, so feel free to bring the kids and stay a while.

8. M&M World New York Store
The M&M store is the ideal spot for kids to explore the magical world of chocolate and document it all with a photo booth keepsake. The three floors of M&M themed candy and gifts is sure to keep both adults and children occupied, but after you’ve got your chocolate fix be sure to head to the photo booth on the 2nd floor and take home some snaps to remember the outing!
Breakfast, lunch, dinner and pies! Oh my! More than two decades ago Bubby’s started off by baking pies, and now it’s a full-fledged restaurant with a couple of locations around the city. (Note: they serve some of the best pancakes in the city.) But head to the one on Hudson Street for a little bit of top model action to take some pics.
If you think that Pasta Carbonara is a dish you can only have in restaurants, you’ll be shocked to see how simple making it really is. Here to break down the steps for any home cook are Gayle Pirie and John Clark, Chefs and Co-owners of Foreign Cinema in San Francisco. Read on for the full recipe.
Ingredients for Pasta Carbonara:
1 pound (or just under) long noodles (spaghettini, fettucini, or linguine)
6 thick slices of smoky bacon
2 Tablespoons pure olive oil
4 eggs
Salt to taste
A chunk of Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Method:
1. Bring lightly salted water to a boil in a large pot. Cook the noodles until tender but firm.
2. While the noodles cook, dice the bacon and cook it in the olive oil until just lightly crisped in a medium sauté pan. Pour off the excess fat, reserving 4 tablespoons in the pan.
3. In a bowl, beat the eggs and season with a little salt.
4. Drain the noodles, saving about 2 tablespoons of water for later. If the pan has cooled down, warm it up again right before adding the noodles.
5. Add the noodles to the warm bacon in the pan; thoroughly toss with the oil and bacon, and season with salt. Work fast and pour the beaten eggs onto the warm noodles and mix well to coat the noodles.
6. Add the reserved pasta water if the noodles look dry. The heat of the noodles and the pan will thicken and set the eggs. If there is not enough heat, turn the burner on very low, just to warm the noodles, then turn it off. Too much heat can scramble the eggs.
7. Once the noodles, egg, and bacon are well mixed, add freshly grated Parmesan cheese, and stir. Freshly ground black pepper is an essential addition. Serve in warm pasta bowls.

Black and white photos of celebrities line the walls of this iconic Burbank steakhouse, which you may recognize from any number of TV shows and films—it was recently featured in La La Land. Since 1992, the Mission Inn has decked out its interior and exterior spaces with thousands of twinkling lights during its annual Festival of Lights. At Lillie’s Victorian Establishment in Times Square, you’ll feel like you walked onto the Love, Actually set. It’s so festive in this Victorian-inspired restaurant tucked right in the same block as two Broadway theaters, you won’t want to leave. The place is decorated to the max with thousands of sparkling garlands, tinsel-bright baubles, life-sized Nutcracker soldiers, and bedecked Christmas trees. Your kids will love the chicken fingers (they’re some of the tastiest in the city) or try the buttermilk pancakes if brunch is more your scene. We love Lillie's year-round—it's one of our favorite places for brunch with kids.
The reigning champion of NYC restaurant Christmas decorations, Rolf’s Bar & Restaurant features such awe-inspiring Christmas décor that this German eatery has achieved bucket-list status for most New Yorkers. Order up some potato pancakes with applesauce (hamburgers and meatloaf are other family-friendly faves) and spend the rest of the meal marveling at the 150,000 antique glass ornaments hanging from the ceiling, and the ancient-looking dolls in between.
For the quintessential Christmas in New York, head to this Central Park landmark. Tavern on The Green brings the Yuletide cheer with glistening décor including its very own 20-foot Christmas tree with over 2,000 ornaments and 10,000 lights. The bar room is full of greenery, a Christmas tree, and lights, and boughs and lights adorn the exterior of the restaurant as well. Adding to the scene is the frequent live jazz, and you and the kids can warm up after a jaunt in the park with spiced cider or hot chocolate.
For holiday decor with a Parisian flair and a side of pommes frites, head to the elegant La Grande Boucherie. Celebrated for its authentic French cuisine, the restaurant is decorated in an Art Nouveau style and features slim, twinkling trees and a large evergreen decked out for the holidays. It's big—designed to accommodate as many as 400 guests. (Heated floors in this area keep things toasty.) If you're going to MoMa or Radio City, this is a good place to land nearby.
It's true, many people come here to taste the legendary Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, and Serendipity3 is a spirited place to dine any time of year. But for the holidays, the restaurant adds a little extra oomph with colorful garlands made of ornaments for an especially festive interior. Stop by for a meal or to sample of one its over-the-top sundaes.
Serra by Birreria, which takes over Eataly’s entire 14th-floor enclosed rooftop, is a “Winter Greenhouse” dining space that changes with the seasons. Previous years featured the winter wonderland look pictured above, with the restaurant’s ceiling covered with sparkling lights, and a decorated trellis surrounded by snow-covered Christmas trees that would make the best holiday card backdrop. Meanwhile, the menu, featuring the cuisine of the Italian Alps region, offers some tried-and-true kid-approved faves. Desserts are worth saving room for, too.

9. Tom's Restaurant
To be fair, it's kind of always Christmas (and 4th of July) at this Prospect Heights, Brooklyn institution, which has been serving up breakfast all day since 1936. (Many of the decorations, from twinkling lights and tinsel to American flags stay up year-round.) Still, Tom's busts out some extra decorations for the holidays, and the perpetual good cheer and goodwill of the joint gets turned up to 11.
Established in 1864, this Gramercy Park bar and restaurant holds a lot of history. Whether you’re looking to kick dinner up a notch with a fine dining experience or you want a simple and casual spread, these DC-area restaurants dish up Thanksgiving dinners even the kids will love (and if they don’t, a few offer regular items, too!). Read on for some of Washington, DC’s best restaurants open on Thanksgiving—plus to-go options for those that want to eat at home, because not having to cook the biggest meal of the year is something to be thankful for!
Lincoln Restaurant Dine in: We're giving thanks for the endless sides this restaurant serves up as part of their Thanksgiving feast. Mac and cheese, brioche stuffing, maple brown sugar sweet potatoes, charred Brussel sprouts and cheese grits are just some of the side stars. In addition to endless sides, enjoy endless meats at the carving station, one a la carte entree and a dessert for $65 ($25 for kids 12 & under).
Take out: Lincoln Restaurant is also offering Thanksgiving at home with a salad, farm turkey with country gravy, three sides, and dessert. Prices range from $75-335 depending on whether you choose the package for 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 people. Founding Farmers Dine in: The pre-fixed for this dinner is sure to please even picky eaters. Enjoy a three-course meal that starts with either soup or salad followed by your choice of a main: turkey, ham, pan seared white fish, salmon, veggie loaf, prime rib ($8 uncharge) and (for picky eaters) fried chicken. Each is served with an array of sides, including mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beens and corn bread. And sweet tooths, rejoice! Founding Farmers is dishing out pies on pies this holiday, among them are apple, pumpkin, pecan, key lime and coconut cream. Dinner costs $43.99/person ($20 for kids 12 & under).
Take out: From brunch to dinner to left over kits, Founding Farmers has you covered on Thanksgiving (as well as your entire holiday weekend). Order a turkey and you can technically lay claim to cooking this bird; you'll receive a "raw and ready to roast" Spatchcock Half Turkey that comes enough bread, sides and dessert to feed 4 ($200). Beyond the classic Thanksgiving entree, you'll find maple-glazed salmon, herb-crusted prime rib, veggie loafs and honey-glazed baked ham as take-and-make at home options.
Smokecraft Take out: This modern BBQ joint is rumored to have one of the best catered meals in the DMV. You’ll find expertly smoked meats as the mains here, including turkey, ham, prime rib, leg of lamp (from $135-200). Elevate your sides with duck fat roasted potatoes, smoked cauliflower, flash-fried Brussel sprouts and award-winning Mac-and-cheese. Don’t forget to grab a pie. Pumpkin, pecan, and apple are all on the menu.
Ted's Bulletin Dine in: There are plenty of reasons to love Ted's. Many locations feature a toy box (we're looking at you Capitol Hill and Fairfax), project movies while you eat and feature a long list of kiddie food favorites, like pop tarts, milk shakes and homemade tater tots. You'll find some Thanksgiving specials on the menu, like house-brined turkey and homestyle gravy, but you and your crew can also select from the regular menu making this a best bet for picky eaters.
Take out: Have a Tedsgiving at Home with Ted's take out. Holiday packages include all the staples of a classic Thanksgiving, like turkey, house-whipped potatoes and rolls. Don't forget to add on one of Ted's famous sweets for dessert. Order by Nov. 19 for Nov. 23. pickup.
Chef Geoff's Dine in: It doesn't get more friendly than Chef Geoff's where kids can opt out of the whole turkey deal all together and choose from an array of kid-friendly menu items like cheeseburgers, grilled chicken, steak and grilled cheese. For little pilgrims that want a plate with all the fixings, Chef Geoff's offers that, too ($14). The three-course adult menu ($55) features 10 alternatives to a turkey dinner, like vegan cauliflower steak and Hong Kong scallops.
Take out: You can bring the stand out Thanksgiving offers served at Chef Geoff's to the comfort of your own home (remember to order by Nov. 11): think maple-glazed turkeys, chicken sausage and sour cherry stuffing (!), port wine cranberry sauce and apple crumble pie. Each package serves two ($90) or four ($175).
Mitsitam Cafe Dine in: It doesn’t get more casual than a Smithsonian cafeteria for a Thanksgiving meal! Equinox Dine in: Todd Gray’s DC institution doesn’t have a children’s menu per se, but the restaurant will accommodate young diners with off-menu options, like house-made pasta ($20). The prix fixed menu ($80) includes the annual tradition of a free oyster (and oyster mushroom!) bar. At every turn, you’ll find plant-based alternatives alongside meat and fish dishes at this vegan-friendly restaurant.
Rose’s at Home Take out: Elevate your Thanksgiving spread by indulging in Rose's Thanksgiving feast to-go. This meal comes with lemon-pepper brined and roasted turkey, salad, three sides, a classic cranberry sauce, and Hawaiian rolls. Serving 2-4 for $250 and 6-8 for $490, this meal will not only satisfy your craving for turkey and carbs, but also provides a donation to the DC Food Project.
