Havenly
Havenly is a great first stop on your path to decorating a blank slate. Start with the site’s cost calculator, where you can select items to get an idea of the cost of a completed space. For each category, choose if you want the item to be a budget, moderate, or spendy purchase. These estimates are averages, so don’t be alarmed if you choose a budget crib and see a whopping price tag of $400. Havenly works with a number of reasonably priced retailers, like Wayfair and Target, meaning you can ask your designer to choose a crib that’s under $300. Next, choose between the online or in-person design experience. Both include 1:1 collaboration with an expert. Find out more at havenly.com.

Your Favorite Furniture Store
If you need some hand-holding but don’t have the budget to invest in a 3D rendering, check out the in-house design services offered by the mall-staple furniture companies (think West ElmPottery Barn KidsBallard Design and Restoration Hardware). Most of these services are free and are offered online as well as in-store. Restoration Hardware provides this service free for members (membership costs $100 but includes perks like 25% on full-priced items and 20% off sale items). These companies employ certified designers who will incorporate your existing furniture into a plan that features your brand of choice, so you don’t need to utilize a company that specializes in nurseries. If you’ve picked out the crib, they can do the rest—rugs, curtains, wall color, and more!

Make sure to capture all the sweetest moments of baby in their gorgeous new room—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

Bette Midler isn’t just an actress, she’s an author, too. The renowned performer is getting ready to drop a brand new children’s book––and she’s reading the audio version!

The Tale of the Mandarin Duck goes on sale Feb. 16 and features an afterword by photographer Michiko Kakutani. Midler was inspired to write the modern fable based on inspiration from a mandarin duck that appeared in Central Park in 2018, and it celebrates the connections people make with each other.

Midler is a conservationist, founder of the New York Restoration Project and participates in Two-Thirds for the Birds, a project that helps revive bird populations. She shares that “Reading the book out loud was a challenge for me, because I’m used to being loud in big spaces, and this is a relatively intimate story. I didn’t want to scare the kids by yelling at them. At the same time, it’s a New York Story, and New York is LOUD….!”

You can shop the new book on Amazon starting Feb. 16 for $18.99.

For a whole-home cleaning you’ll select the size of your home and what type of cleaning products you prefer—customer-provided, eco-friendly or standard. Other services ask additional questions, such as how many windows you have (for window cleaning) or the square-footage of your home.

While Amazon staff member don’t actually clean your home, they do pick out the “best service providers” in your area.

As reigning king and queen of their mini Magnolia empire, Chip and Joanna Gaines are adding one more project to their lengthy list accomplishments—hoteliers!

As if a crazy-popular HGTV show, magazine, slew of books, collab with Target, coffee shop and their own television network weren’t enough, now the Gaines family is opening a hotel.

On their Magnolia blog Joanna wrote of the hotel project, “Home matters. For Chip and me, there is nothing more valuable or essential to our well-being than the way our family feels when we are home.” The home design mogul added, “So when a project like the one we’re announcing today comes along, and it bridges what we’re most passionate about—home, hospitality, and restoration—we can’t help but go all-in.”

So what can you expect from the new Gaines hotel? According to Jo, “Home is a feeling, created by and for the people you love and share your life with; it’s a state of being known and loved just as you are. That is our dream for this hotel—that it would serve as an extension of the way we feel about our own home and all it represents to us, and that every guest who comes to stay would experience that same sense of belonging and community.”

The couple will renovate a historic 53,000 square-foot building in downtown Waco, Texas. The location is only a few blocks from the existing Magnolia Market at the Silos. While the duo haven’t announced a debut date yet, Joanna did reveal that the hotel is scheduled to open in 2021.

Joanna Gaines Shares Her Secret to Getting Kids to Share Their Rooms

This Easy Joanna Gaines Design Hack Can Refresh a Whole Room in 5 Minutes

When a three-year-old accidentally locked out his dad’s iPad, the Twitter-verse jumped to save the device. New Yorker staff writer Evan Osnos recently shared a screenshot of his iPad—and all 25,536,442 minutes try-again time!

We’ve all been there. Your kiddo gets a hold of some sort of pricey piece of tech and disables or otherwise locks it. Osnos’ story is the same, but to the extreme. With well over 25 million minutes until he could even attempt to unlock the tablet the dad took to Twitter, pleading for help.

So what advice did the internet have for Osnos? While plenty of people got technical with their responses, others had a more playful approach. One Twitter user suggested time travel:

https://twitter.com/Geopilot/status/1114708847128608768

Another commenter tweeted to give the tot the passcode. Of course, Osnos went more for the actual tech ideas and not the more imaginative options.

Following the initial tweet Osnos told his followers, noting he was still locked out: “It’s down a few hundred minutes from yesterday, but it looks like we’ve still got 25 million minutes to go. On Twitter, people have suggested various fixes but the consensus seems to be that we’re using an old operating system that won’t let us restart fresh from iTunes. When I get home from work tonight, I’ll give it a try and see what happens.”

According to an update tweet, Osnos was able to get the iPad into DFU (device firmware update) mode and start the restoration process.

The Epic April Fool’s Day Prank You Need to Plan for Next Year, Starting Today

You’re Stuck on a Deserted Island with a Sesame Street Muppet: Who Do You Choose?

As a business owner and a mom, I’m proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with all the other parents out there who meet the challenges of raising kids and navigating the workplace. It’s not always easy, but I know I’m in a unique position to give my children something special. As an entrepreneur and a parent, you are too.

Have you thought about how much you can teach your kids based on the things you deal with every day at work? When our children are young, they still listen to us. When they grow older, their independence grows too. With luck and love, we can teach them early on and help them develop strong values and practical skills. I try to do it with ideas I bring home from work.

When my husband and I were starting up ServiceMaster Restoration by Zaba in Chicago, I almost gave birth at the office twice. Maternity leave just wasn’t an option. My daughter is 7 now and my son is almost 6, but they both got to know our workplace at an early age while they were in their cribs. They still enjoy spending time here, and they even have small jobs they do around the office. That probably explains why both of them have grown up wanting to run their own company some day.

I know I was motivated to be my own boss by the things I learned from my father. Watching him operate his small business taught me so much, and I want to do the same for my kids. I use my experience as a business owner to teach my children these five important life skills.

1. Smart Money Management Pays Off

Even though they’re small, the kids have schedules for chores at the house and things they do at our workplace. We pay them for the tasks they take care of at the office, and that makes them feel like a real part of our company. The children don’t get everything they want, but they save up for special things. My husband and I take them to the bank, and they fill out their own deposit slips. While their pay is small, it makes them feel very empowered. They’re also learning the value of managing their money.

2. Good Communication Starts With Listening

Sometimes, our teams at the office disagree over project details. The kids have seen us sit together and work it out by really listening to each individual’s input. I remind the children of this “stop and listen” policy when they start to argue. The strategy doesn’t head off every fight between the kids, but it does calm them down so that they can disagree without yelling. They know it works at our office, and I know it helps them develop good communication skills.

3. Getting the Job Done Is a Team Effort

When my son or daughter wants to go with me to a job site, I see it as an opportunity for teaching. The restoration process is very hands-on, so the kids see my crews in action working together as a team. Back at the house, they often pitch in and help each other with their chores. When they come to me with big smiles saying they finished in record time, I congratulate them on doing a great job and getting it done together.

4. Leadership Means Not Being Afraid

For now, the kids believe they want to grow up and be just like me and my husband. They already want to run their own business. I want them to have the courage it takes to be entrepreneurs even if they change their minds later on. At work, I’m never afraid of starting something new. Being a leader means being fearless. I try to teach the children that it sometimes takes courage to get things right. I want them to be brave when things go wrong too.

5. Every Dream Deserves Encouragement

My son likes to work on skateboards, and it’s a challenge for him at his age. I’m so proud of him for not giving up. My daughter wants to start a summer ice cream business. She might change her mind later, but she’s making plans now. If I hadn’t dreamed big when I was little, I might not be the head of my own restoration company today. As an entrepreneur, I encourage my children to be entrepreneurs. They may choose a different course, but as long as they follow their dreams, I know they’ll be successful.

They Teach Us, Too

Never underestimate the countless opportunities you have to set a good example as a working parent. When the kids look up to you and see you as a role model, you’re positioned to share your experiences and help them build their own personal and professional success in life. As much as I teach my children, they teach me too, and that’s one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned.

I take pride in the success of my restoration business, but the pride I take in watching my kids growing up happy and healthy is priceless. As an entrepreneur and a parent, I know you feel the same way.

AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center
The lobby at this theater is a mini-museum on the history of film, and an all around celebration of the moving image in the digital age. AFI presents an unprecedented variety of film and video programs, including filmmaker interviews, panels, discussions, musical performances and more, along with the visuals to go with it. The center is a state of the art facility, anchored by the restoration of noted architect John Eberson’s historic 1938 Silver Theatre, and it features 32,000 square feet of new construction that houses two stadium theatres, plus reception and exhibit areas. AFI’s annual Silver Docs festival is one of the year’s most highly anticipated film festivals, bringing to D.C. a series of amazing documentaries from around the world.

Avalon Theatre
Thanks to D.C. indie film lovers, the Avalon went from a crumbling movie house to the restoration of what movie theaters once were when seeing a movie was a luxury outing only. As the oldest operating movie house in the area, The Avalon has been a cornerstone of northwest D.C. since it opened in 1923. It now serves as D.C.’s only nonprofit film center and you can be certain that any time you spend at The Avalon is in support of the love of art and film. The Avalon’s line up is a combination of first-run studio films, independent and foreign films, film festivals, a Wednesday night series, and special programs for students, families and seniors, all in a beautiful, historic setting. Bring the family to one of the Weekend Family Matinees, which feature films and live performances that are family-friendly and ridiculously fun. Most are held on Saturday mornings and scheduled periodically throughout the year.

Today it is both a theater and a performing arts center. In addition to seeing films, you can rent it for productions, parties and events. You can even screen your own feature film at the theater, along with a full red carpet experience. Your family film buff has a real future here!
