Wander Through the Dallas Arboretum

Quite possibly the most lovely spot in all of DFW, the world-renowned Dallas Arboretum is a favorite with locals and tourists alike. Calling over 66 acres in East Dallas home, this outdoor museum is a breath of fresh air for anyone who visits. There are rotation exhibits like Dallas Blooms, Autumn at the Arboretum, the Cool Thursday Concert Series, and the very popular 12 Days of Christmas. Kids will love Rory Meyer’s Children Garden, where you’ll find 17 living galleries created specifically for kids.

Insider Tip: Unless you have a membership, it’s a fairly pricey day. Be sure to buy tickets online, invest in membership or brave the Texas summer heat, when admission is only $1.

Spend a Day at the Dallas Zoo

The oldest zoo in Texas offers 106 acres of outdoor fun! From the Children’s Zoo with a splash creek to the Giants of the Savannah exhibit, you can spend a whole day here, and you might not see everything. Feed the giraffes, play on the elephant statues, walk the gorilla trail, watch the hippos swim and wander through the reptile house. There are numerous family programs throughout the day including shows at Wonders of the Wild amphitheater and getting up close and personal during a Wild Encounter. Popular year-round events like Safari Nights and Dallas Zoo lights make this a great place for families. Don't forget to ride the carousel before you leave!

This hidden outdoor gem is just 10 miles away from downtown Dallas. With five miles of hiking trails, a nature exhibit chronicling the history of the Great Trinity Forest, a gift shop and even a bullfrog named Jeremiah, this LEED-certified center is a great way to learn about the natural landscape of Dallas. Bring plenty of water and a picnic lunch, and enjoy the 120 acres of space. Be on the lookout for native birds, otters, beavers and other critters.

Play in Klyde Warren Park

Located in the heart of Dallas, Klyde Warren Park is a gathering place for both Dallas residents and visitors alike. The 5.6-acre park is built over Woodall Rogers Freeway and offers sweeping views of the Dallas skyline. Food trucks line up daily, the Dallas Museum of Art is across the street, and from the stretch of lawn to the playground that has a climbing web and water features, a few hours will go by in a flash. You can often find dancers or musicians performing on the stage, there are outdoor movie nights on the weekends, fitness classes during the week and even a dog park. Mi Cocina, a popular Tex-Mex local chain, is set to open in the adjourning restaurant space, and the organization in charge of the park is currently working on several improvements, including expanding the children’s park, installing a new fountain and adding a 1.7-acre expansion.

Thought San Francisco had the monopoly on trolley rides? Think again and then grab a ride on the M Line Trolley from Uptown to the heart of the Arts District. It’s a 365-free-to-all ride that yes, comes with air conditioning for those crazy hot summer days. Park near or walk to any of the frequent stops in Uptown and be on the way.

Learn Cool New Things at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science

This museum is five floors of WOW, so choose wisely. You can challenge a T-Rex to a foot race, create an earthquake beneath your feet, view jaw-dropping crystals and gems, or take your littlest ones to the Children’s Musem, where they’ll be able to play in a Farmer’s Market, dig for dino bones, or climb the iconic Dallas skyline. Be sure to leave extra time to hang out in the water zone and frog park, which is at the front of the museum, but best left as the last stop.

A high-end mall, NorthPark has not only designer shopping but also Bread Winners Cafe and Bakery, which overlooks a lovely green space in the middle. There is a movie theater, LEGO and Disney stores, Bookmarks, a branch of the Dallas public library system, an indoor fountain that is the home of ducks and turtles, and even fine art like a few Andy Warhols and fantastic sculptures. The trains at NorthPark a must for the holiday season!

Explore the West End

This historical district in Dallas has seen a renaissance in recent years. If you've got older kids, pay a visit to the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum. Older kids will also like the Sixth Floor Museum, along with Dealey Plaza and the grassy knoll—the area in Dallas where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. Younger members of the family will enjoy the Dallas World Aquarium, and everyone will love the Museum of Illusions. Grab some grub at Burger IM and finish with a treat at Kokopelli Candy. There's also a new park where families can rest and enjoy the sunshine.

While I was growing up, I absolutely loved Barbie. I would beg my mother for a new Barbie every time we ventured into the toy department. As soon as we neared those Pepto Bismol-pink displays, I would get butterflies and daydream of Barbie’s and my next adventure together.

On one such trip, my mother finally acquiesced and bought me Peaches ‘n’ Cream Barbie. She kept her in the closet and said she would be my birthday gift.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) for me, Peaches ‘n’ Cream sat in her pink box staring down at me with her eternally painted smile through her see-through plastic window. I looked forward to our reunion with eagerness.

When the happy day arrived, I carefully removed Peaches ‘n’ Cream from her packaging, and slowly examined her with the precision of a doctor. She was perfect—she had waist length blonde tresses and big blue eyes. Peaches ‘n’ Cream Barbie was beautiful—and I looked nothing like her.

It’s bad enough that Barbie is a poor anatomical role model for young girls, all unbalanced rack and legs for days. But when I had asked my mother what was meant by “peaches ‘n’ cream,” she shook her head.

“I don’t know,” she had replied.

It was years later that I learned the meaning: a creamy white complexion with a blush of peach. Something I would never have. I was thankful that my 6-year-old self and my 30-something-year-old mother never knew this at the time.

Now that I’m a 30-something with young impressionable daughters of my own, I am determined that they have a doll who looks more like them.

Enter Nahji, from Assam, India. Nahji is part of a collection called Hearts 4 Hearts Girls whose proceeds partially go to helping young girls in the countries they represent, including Dell (USA), Consuelo (Mexico), Rahel (Ethiopia), Tipi (Laos), and Lilian (Belarus).

I immediately purchased this doll for Pumpkin’s 2nd birthday. Never mind that the box loudly stated For Ages 6+ or that my daughter was more interested in the box Nahji came in rather than in Nahji herself. She has dark beautiful hair and large lovely brown eyes. She is perfect—and she looks everything like us.

Dear Family Members,

Hey, it’s me! I was looking at some old photos the other day and stumbled across our family reunion ones. Do you remember how awful we all looked? I mean it was the 80s and we all thought we were probably super cool with that hair and those clothes. I don’t know about you but looking back made me cringe.

I know through the years we grew up and life happened. I kept up with the news on you through my folks. I wasn’t great about keeping in touch personally and take full responsibility for that.

But then the era of social media dawned. I found you and “friended” you. I celebrated when you had great news and when the news wasn’t great, I mourned with you.  Because you are family and family means a lot to me I always wanted you to know I was there for you.

Recently though I noticed something, that our relationship has been rather one-sided. I know you are super busy with your life and there are the algorithms of social media but I started to wonder something. Do I ever cross your mind?

You may roll your eyes, but I’m being serious. I’m not saying you have to think about me 24/7 in some sort of weird stalker-like way, but honestly, do you ever scroll through the posts or talk to your folks about us?

I know we choose a very different path. You have a great career and these amazing smart children who could be fashion models. We adopted two special needs kids. I’m a stay at home mom who likes to bake and read.

Our differences may be glaring but at the heart of it, we both have a strong love for our children and lives. I’m no less proud of my son’s ability to get that B with his profound learning disabilities or my daughter’s learning to sit independently at nine years old than you are of your son’s making the debate team or your daughter making all-stars cheering. I’m just as excited that I am volunteering at our local hospital as I am about your big promotion.

This last week was awful. My daughter ended up in the hospital. Her platelet count had gotten to dangerous levels, she had an infection and to top it off part of her lung had collapsed. I was dazed, scared, and cried at least 20 times a day. I have honestly never been so frightened in my life. We came very close to losing her. Even though we are home now she is still in the danger zone. I am up around the clock making sure she is still safe.

One night while I was watching her oxygen I was scrolling through social media and saw you having a huge argument with another family member. It wasn’t even anything important. But it made me sad. You took a huge amount of time to argue a little point but couldn’t take 10 seconds to check in on us. Your silence was deafening.

Now, we have support. I have an amazing group of friends and our parents. We are loved. But to hear from you would have meant something. It would make a scary and confusing time a little bit better.

I would love to chalk this up to media algorithms, but this one-sided relationship has gone on for years now. I have been given all sorts of advice on how to handle it. Unfriend, pointed comments, the list was quite long.

But I have a better idea. I’m going to keep on cheering for you. The world is so broken and hurting right now, we don’t need another reason to be divided.  I’ll be there for you. When you celebrate and when you mourn. My love for you is unconditional and though reciprocation is nice, it’s not necessary. You are family and family is everything to me.

Sincerely,

Your Family Member
