Since the pandemic, our travel plans have been up in the air: it’s not easy keeping up with local restrictions, let alone in places across the country or even the world. A new survey from Travelocity conducted this month finds that one group of travelers have been paving the way when it comes to pandemic travel: parents! In fact, the research found that family travel will be the first to come roaring back. Read on to find out why and where parents are going in 2021.

Family on beach

Travelocity’s recent study showed a few patterns that demonstrate that pandemic travel, post-pandemic travel and family travel are still going strong. It showed (surprisingly) that parents are twice as likely to have traveled since the start of the pandemic.

Why are parents seemingly more comfortable with travel in 2021? The study revealed:

Parents know the industry: 57% identify as extremely or very familiar with the travel industry (compared to 42% of non-parents).

Parents are savvy online and they know how to make it work for them: 53% use social media to research travel changes and policies, 46% use local news and news sites, and 37% use travel websites (vs. using word of mouth or exchanging info with friends).

55% of parents are confident in their 2021 travel plans. Parents are planning earlier trips and booking their trips earlier than non-parents. 56% of parents who will travel in 2021 are already planning or will start planning their first leisure vacation in the next few weeks. 44% of parents indicate they’d feel comfortable traveling knowing that those around them had been vaccinated.

So what’s the most common trends among families? A trip to visit family (40%) followed by a road trip or a beach trip (30%). Following that, trips to visit friends (26%) or weekend getaways (26%) are on family bucket lists for 2021.

Parents also site hotel cleanliness as the most important factor in making decisions about where to go or stay.

Deciding on baby names is just one of the many challenges new parents face, but it’s a big one. Should you go traditional or unique? Family name or inspired by a favorite character? There are so many options to choose from, but some are a little more popular than others. As the year comes to an end, it’s time to take a look at the most popular baby names of 2019.

BabyCenter just released its annual list of the top baby names of the year, and despite a few names shifting spots, the list looks very similar to the one from 2018. The data was based on nearly 600,000 BabyCenter parents who shared their baby’s names. Topping the list, which is divided into boys and girls’ names, are Sophia and Liam. This is the tenth year running for Sophia at the number one spot, but the first year for Liam, which knocked Jackson out of the top spot after six years. Isla made the biggest leap from 74 to 36. Arabic names Muhammed and Aaliyah cracked the top ten for the first time.

BabyCenter also analyzed the data collected on baby names to look for trends that have made an impact on selections this past year. It should come as no major surprise that Star Wars had an impact on baby names, with names from the new anthology films and TV series, like Cassian and Kira (Qi’ra) gaining in popularity. Other name trends include a resurgence of names popular in the ’90s, like Brittany and Austin, as well as names inspired by The Bachelor and, possibly strangest of all, actor Keanu Reeves. Not only did Keanu get a big boost, but the characters he portrayed, like Duke from Toy Story 4 and Sage from the upcoming SpongeBob movie, also shot up.

The site also made some predictions on the trends for baby names in 2020. Predicted trends include nonbinary names, like Sam and River, names from the roaring ’20s, like Richard and Virginia, as well as names inspired by female athletes, country music stars and Disney+.

Are you due in 2020? BabyCenter recently revealed its predictions for the top baby names of next year!

So what do the baby naming pros at BabyCenter think will top the charts in ’20? The site combined baby name data, pop culture picks and media faves to come up with a list that covers everything from old school selections to Disney+ picks.

Next year marks a step into the next decade. Even though we’re entering the 2020’s, some of the popular names are throwbacks to the 1920’s. Jazz-age names such as Frank, Barbara, Richard, Ruth, Virginia and Tony are climbing the charts and predicted to pop in popularity next year.

Along with the roaring ’20s, 2020 is also predicted to see the rise of the powerful female athlete name. Simone (as in Biles), Allyson (Felix), Coco (Gauff), Naomi (Osaka), Alex (Morgan), Megan (Rapinoe), Carli (Lloyd) and Dalilah (Muhammad) are all winners in 2020.

If you’re into Disney, popular picks in 2020 include High School Musical’s Troy, Gabriella, Nini and Ricky along with princesses Aurora, Ariel, Belle and Jasmine. Other Disney+ faves, such as Star Wars and Marvel flicks, may also have names that make a splash in 2020. Luke, Leia, Rey, Finn, Peter, Bruce, Natasha and Carol are all contenders for the top names list.

Country stars aren’t just topping the music charts, they’re also predicted to rank high on the 2020 baby names list. Maren, Kacey, Blake, Garth, Carrie and Kane are celebs with names to copy—for your baby, that is.

BabyCenter’s predictions also include a few nonbinary selections, such as Ari, Corey, River, Cameron, Tatum, Sam, Emery and Frankie.

Steve Irwin’s legacy of animal conservation lives on, thanks to his wife and two kids. A new animal series, Crikey! It’s the Irwins, is set to premiere this fall, giving us all that up-close look at animal life with this animal-loving family that we’ve missed since Steve’s passing.

Terri Irwin and kids Bindi and Robert are all set to star in the new series for Animal Planet that will follow their lives as they work and live at Australia Zoo. The show will give fans a look at what daily life is like for them in their unusual home where they care for over 1,200 animals, as well as running a wildlife hospital. “It’s an amazing place to live,” Robert told PEOPLE. “Our alarm clock in the morning is the tigers roaring.”

Since Steve Irwin’s tragic death in 2006, his family has worked hard to continue his life-long conservation efforts. “We’re all about carrying on in our dad’s footsteps,” Bindi, 20, tells PEOPLE.

This won’t be the first time in front of the camera for the Irwin kids. Besides appearing on their dad’s show, The Crocodile Hunter, both kids have also hosted their own shows on Discovery Kids.

Even the busiest engines on the Isle of Sodor need a break now and then. This summer, everyone’s favorite blue train, Thomas the Tank Engine, is chugging to stations around the country to say hi to his biggest fans. Tiny train lovers around the Bay Area will get a chance to ride the rails with Thomas at Roaring Camp Railroad’s annual Day Out with Thomas happening in July and August. The Big Adventures Tour 2018 through the Big Trees gives families around the country a chance to celebrate all things Thomas. Read on for our tips on making this awesome day a success.

Activities

The highlight of Day Out With Thomas is a 25-minute train ride (pulled and narrated by none other than Thomas the Tank Engine) through towering redwoods of Bear Mountain; however, you’ll need several hours to experience everything the event has to offer. Grab a passbook when you enter to gather stamps along the way at all of the activities. Kids who complete their passbook get a special Thomas-themed prize!

photo: Sandra Lee

Kids can enjoy train-themed activities at multiple Thomas & Friends Imagination Stations, including face painting, temporary tattoos, coloring, a bubble machine, and, of course, train tables! Roaring Camp will come alive with music and entertainment such as storytelling, magicians, and juggling. A not-to-be-missed spot is the sing-along where all kids can join in the musical fun.

photo: Sandra Lee

You can also meet Sir Topham Hatt, the Isle of Sodor’s Railroad Controller, and pose for a photo. Pack a picnic lunch or purchase kid-friendly food on site. Roaring Camp has lovely grounds and is surrounded by redwood trees, so there’s plenty of room to explore while waiting for the train.

What You Need to Know

Purchase your tickets now. Arrive an hour early, minimum. If at all possible, try to get tickets for Friday, as it will be less crowded. Plan to hang out most of the day before or after your ride.

When reserving your tickets, you will need to indicate which car you’d like to sit in. Cars #1 thru #3 and Car #8 (wheelchair-accessible) are open air cars. Cars #4-7 are open air cars with canopy tops, and Car #10 is a fully-enclosed coach car with open windows. Thomas will be pulling the cars, so unless you’re in Car #1 or #2, you won’t be able to see him while riding the train. Seats within cars are not pre-assigned; it’s first come first served, so head to the train station early.

The ride is mostly through the shaded forest, but the grounds of Roaring Camp are sunny so be sure to pack sunscreen and sun hats for the other activities (some are indoor).

There is a gift shop on site and they do sell Thomas and other train swag so consider yourself warned.

The train table activity station is one of the most popular, so trains are in short supply. You can bring your own Thomas trains for your little ones to play with, but make sure they are clearly labeled, and keep a close eye on them!

photo: bonggamom

Do not forget your camera! You can pose for pics with Thomas and Sir Topham Hatt before or after the ride. There’s also a covered wagon, a blacksmith shop, old engine cars, and other generally awesome spots for photo-ops.

There is room for strollers on the grounds, but the walkways are on the bumpy side. You can’t bring strollers on the train; strollers must be left at designated “stroller parking” areas at the station. Opt for a baby carrier if possible. The parking lot is a short walk from the actual station, so you’ll want you main supplies on hand. A wagon or jogging stroller loaded up would do fine.

Hop On Board
Tickets are on sale now and are available for July 27-29 and Aug. 5-7. Each ticket includes the 25-minute train ride and all the activities listed above. Advance tickets are highly recommended and can be purchased by clicking here or calling 1-866-468-7630.

Cost: Advance purchases are $21 and $25 for peak times (Sat. & Sun., 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.). Tickets are required for ages two and up, under two are free but will not have an assigned seat.

Times: The train runs every hour starting at 10:30 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m. Arrive at least one hour before your scheduled train ride.

Jump! Crawl! Climb! Slide! Run! Play! You can do all that and more at San Diego’s newest indoor play space that kids are loving! Urban Jungle Fun Park in Santee is packed full of activities including a trampoline court, gigantic play structure, huge slide, and an inflatable obstacle course. Whether you’re planning your kiddo’s next birthday party there, or just going for a day of play, everyone will have a roaring good time.

The Jungle Fun
What makes Urban Jungle unique from other indoor play spots is the facility is designed for little tykes and big kid too. There’s a trampoline court, a 14-level enormous play structure, and a towering 4-lane rock wall. Kids can also slide down the massive four-lane slide or run through an inflatable obstacle course. There are also wall-sized video games if physical exertion isn’t for your kiddo. Little tykes under 40 inches or 45 pounds can play on most of the equipment the big kids use, so long as a parent is there to help out.

We suggest checking out Urban Tot, a special weekday playtimes just for little tigers. For $10 admission (includes one kiddo and adult), the activities and climbing structures are geared solely to those ages 5 and under. Urban Tot takes place Tuesday – Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Parent Jungle
Parents are not forgotten at Urban Jungle! There is plenty of space for you to entertain yourselves while the kids jump to their hearts’ content. Multiple parent lounges come with comfy seating, free Wi-Fi, televisions, and outlets to plug into in case you need to get some work done. Of course, if you want to join in on the fun your kids are having, go for it! All of the entertainment is built for adults too. Keep in mind parents can only participate in activities with a paid admission.

Party Like a Monkey
Urban Jungle has  two party rooms available for your next birthday party or special event. Since the rooms are just behind the trampoline and jungle gym, they’re easy access and out of the way. Parties last two hours and booking in advance as a group will give you some great savings.

Looking for something to do as a family date night? Spend an evening playing together at Urban Jungle’s Family Night. For $29 for a family of four, your crew (and you!) can jump, slide and climb for 90 minutes. Family Night takes place Mondays from 4 – 8 p.m.

Insider’s Tips

  • If you visit Urban Jungle on a weekend, get there early because parking is limited and it can be tough to find a space.
  • Urban Jungle allows you to bring snacks from home. There’s a Snack Shack in case you want something more to eat.
  • If you’re visiting Urban Tot playtime for the first time, make sure you let the staff know since your first visit is free for one kiddo and parent ($2 off for the sibling)!
