If you’re in the middle of raising a big kid, then you know living with someone in the throes of raging hormones is not for the weak. Happy one moment and outraged the next, parenting a tween or teen is a roller coaster of emotions that can leave you exhausted and confused. The good news is, in what might be the most challenging stage of parenting (toddler parents, we see you—wait a few years), there are ways to communicate effectively with your kids, even when they throw major shade your way. Dr. Lucie Hemmen, an adolescent and parenting expert who explained in a previous TikTok video that there’s a biological reason for teens being mean to you, offers three ways to respond when your kid is super rude.
Stone-cold silence speaks volumes. In truth, tweens and teens don’t have the emotional intelligence to react maturely a lot of the time. When you engage with your kid after they’ve been rude, you’re turning it into a situation between you and them instead of it being just them. Hemmen says that staying silent allows for whatever they say to “just sit there, unobscured.” Which, in turn, puts the ball back in your court.
#2. Say something short and sweet.
If an immediate response is a must, Hemmen suggests keeping it simple. As in one word, like “ouch,” that relays to your big kid you’re hurt by their words but you also refuse to engage. So keep it brief and check out this list of what not to say to an angry tween or teen to avoid other communication pitfalls when dealing with big kids.
#3. Wait a bit, then validate their feelings and express your own.
This response is one of the best things you can do when dealing with a rude kid because you can calm down and think about what you want to address, and it allows the child time to reflect on their actions.
Nobody thinks well when emotions are running high, and Hemmen explains that teens have an even harder time. “They have a big struggle with this because of the state of their brain development: Their prefrontal cortex really shuts down; they are all emotion. It’s almost like talking to an intoxicated person,” she says.
The key is not to engage with them when emotions are high but to recognize and validate their feelings when you know they’re listening. Hammen suggests speaking with your child later when everyone has had an opportunity to reflect. What should you say? “Hey, remember when you felt really disappointed because I said no about whatever? You told me you hated my guts and I’m the worst parent in the world. You know, I just want you to know I get that you are frustrated. I get it sucks to be disappointed. I really, really understand that,” Hammen says.
Then you can explain that while they have a right to their feelings, they don’t have the right to be rude. In truth, they’ll be more likely to absorb that concept at a future time, even if they don’t admit it. It can go something like: “Will you try to memorize this as an opportunity for you to pause, take a breath, and treat me like I’m a person? I’m okay with you being disappointed, but it does hurt my feelings when you talk to me that way,” she says.
As your kid’s budding personality begins to reveal itself, you’re sure to get a kick out of all their quirks and preferences—and you can’t help but notice just how much of their own little person they really are. You might have loved a good impromptu dance party as a child, but your kid may be more content to revel in quiet time, read a picture book, or express themselves with watercolors. Or they’re super active and eager to sprint all over the park—or just about anywhere else you take them (sorry, fellow grocery store shoppers). Born under Taurus, the fixed earth sign, your wee bull is perfectly happy moving through life at a slow and steady pace. Healthy, consistent sleep habits are key for getting your baby in a good groove for snoozing. To do it, set up a calming bedtime routine, buy a white noise machine to drown out distractions, and read what these two prominent sleep experts have to say in this baby sleep guide for year one.

The good news: There are things we can do to help our babies sleep well. “Learning to sleep on your own is a skill just like learning to crawl or walk, and it takes lots of practice, consistency, and patience,” says Wasserman. “With the right plan looking at the sleep environment, routine, timing of feedings, schedule and approach to teach the skill of independent sleep, healthy sleep is achievable by all.”
Babies can differ when it comes to sleep patterns, but these guidelines will give you an idea of what to expect from naps and wake times, and how to create a healthy sleep routine for your baby. If you’re concerned about your baby’s sleep patterns, talk to your pediatrician.
Newborn Sleep Tips: Birth to 2 months
Total sleep a day:14-18 hours Awake window between naps: 30 minutes to 1.5 hours Naps: 45 minutes to 3 hours, several naps a day Sleep help: swaddling, white noise, motion (smart bassinet, rocking, bouncing on a yoga ball), Dr. Karp’s the 5 S’s, described below
Newborns are usually up every 2-3 hours, even at night, which gradually extends to 3- to 5-hour stretches of nighttime sleep. To help newborns learn the difference between day and night, keep lights brighter by day, take sunny morning walks, and play upbeat music. In the evening, dim the lights and plan calmer activities, like baths, and stick to soft music and lullabies, as well as white noise.
Between birth and four months, Dr. Karp recommends the soothing technique he developed called the 5 S’s to turn on baby’s calming reflex and promote sleep. The 5 S’s are:
⚬ Swaddling—it decreases startling and re-creates the womb’s coziness.
⚬ Side/stomach position—you’ll calm a crying baby more quickly in these two positions, but, for safety, babies must be put on their back for sleep.
⚬ Shushing—making shushing noises with your mouth will soothe a fussy baby, and white noise re-creates the shushing sound that blood flow makes in the womb.
⚬ Swinging—to calm a crying child, support baby’s head and neck, and use fast, tiny swinging motions no more than one inch to each side (do this safely, no shaking).
⚬ Sucking—Whether they’re using a pacifier, their thumb, or your pinky finger, sucking soothes babies into sleep.
Total sleep a day: 13-14 hours Awake window between naps: 1.5 to 2.5 hours Naps: 30 minutes to 2 hours, 2-3 naps a day Sleep help: white noise, blackout shades, Dr. Karp’s 5 S’s, introducing a sleep and feeding schedule, teaching your baby to self-soothe
Introduce a consistent daily schedule of feedings and sleep times. Picking up on your baby’s sleep cues (yawning or rubbing their eyes) will help you establish the schedule. And blackout shades can help babies sleep when the sun is shining. This is also a good time to introduce a sleep routine to signal to your child that it’s time for rest. Before naps, you can sing, read a book, and cuddle. The bedtime routine should be longer and can incorporate a bath, lullaby, baby massage, nursing or a bottle, soft music, white noise, and books.
A key part of creating good sleep habits is teaching babies to fall asleep independently, rather than always rocking, feeding or holding them until they fall asleep. It’s normal for children, and adults, to wake up between sleep cycles. So when babies wake, we make it easier for them to fall back asleep by putting babies to bed drowsy but awake.
“If they fall asleep while taking a bottle and then wake during the night and the bottle is gone, it often results in them crying for the bottle,” says Wasserman. “If they fall asleep on their own after being put in the crib drowsy but awake, when they wake during the night, they will be in the exact same position they were in when they fell asleep, making it easier for them to get right back to sleep.”
In fact, Dr. Karp recommends that if your baby falls asleep before being placed in their bed, wake them slightly after you lay them down, by changing their diaper, putting your cool hand on their head, or giving them a little tickle. Baby will open their eyes, moan, or move your hand before falling back to sleep.
“I know it sounds crazy to wake a sleeping baby,” says Dr. Karp. “But it helps infants learn how to self-soothe, which they can use in the middle of the night to put themselves back into slumber all on their own.”
At this age, babies are typically sleeping for 5- to 6-hour stretches, but watch out for that four-month sleep regression. Regressions usually last 2-4 weeks and typically coincide with exciting developmental and physical changes. According to Wasserman, the four-month regression generally happens as baby’s internal sleep rhythms start to settle. This can require changing your schedule so naps and nighttime sleep are better in sync with your child’s natural sleep rhythms.

4-8 months

Sleep stretches of 6-8 hours are possible at this age. But babies typically start teething around this time, so wake-ups can be due to discomfort. Try chilled teethers and give extra cuddles to soothe your little one back to sleep.
When your baby cries out from the crib, wait a moment before rushing to comfort them. Yes, it will feel like the longest seconds of your life. But here’s why it’s important: Your baby may be able to self-soothe to get back to sleep, thanks to all the work you’ve been doing to put them down drowsy but awake.
If you suspect hunger is waking your baby at night, make sure they’re feeding well before bedtime to fill them up. You can also introduce a dream feed, which means nursing or giving your half-asleep baby a bottle before you go to bed for the night.
At 8-9 months, prepare for another sleep regression. According to Wasserman, this regression is usually tied to babies dropping their third nap. She recommends moving bedtime a little earlier to keep your little one from becoming overtired as they get used to being awake longer before bed.

As babies approach the one-year mark, they may be sleeping up to 7-10 hours at a stretch, and it will feel as glorious for you as it sounds. But don’t get too comfortable because, with walking and other exciting baby milestones and developmental leaps on the horizon, sleep may get interrupted again.
Around 12 months, another sleep regression is likely. This one is usually linked to learning to walk and may result in your baby refusing to nap. Wasserman recommends not giving up on naps or switching to one nap just yet. Instead, hang tight and be consistent with two naps as your baby moves through this regression in a few weeks.
The happy ending to this wild year? Understanding your baby’s natural sleep rhythms, creating a soothing environment for rest, building an adaptable schedule of sleep and feedings, and teaching your baby to self-soothe and sleep independently have built a foundation of good sleep habits that will help your child (and you!) sleep well for years to come.

The Bean is the main attraction in Millennium Park that reflects Chicago’s famous skyline and the puffy clouds above. Officially called “Cloud Gate,” this public sculpture is a little kid favorite as they can see themselves from all sides thanks to the stainless steel coating of the bean-shaped sculpture. While you’re in the hood, head to Maggie Daley Park or splash around in the Crown Fountain if the temps are warm.
Civil Rights history comes alive for your school-age children at this thought-provoking museum. Through eight galleries, you can explore interactive exhibits and engaging artifacts, and hear stories from people who fought for civil rights in Mississippi. The galleries encircle a reflective space entitled, “This Little Light of Mine” with a dramatic sculpture that glows brighter as visitors gather. Follow the rich history of civil rights together, and learn how it changed the nation.
Do your kiddos dream of going to the moon? The Space Center Houston is their ticket to ride! Inspire their curiosity at this exciting learning center that uses space exploration to create an interest in science and math. Check out the more than 400 space artifacts, exhibits, and experiences related to America’s human space-flight program. Known as the home of NASA Mission Control and the International Space Station, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the U.S. space program. One of your most memorable experiences is sure to be the epic Apollo 17 Command Module. To the moon!
Chances are, your kids have never seen trees as tall as the California Redwoods. With 31 National and State parks to choose from, you can explore these majestic giants all over California. You’ll even find three trees you can drive through! For the easiest access, head to Muir Woods National Monument, near San Francisco. As a part of the National Park System, kids can join the Junior Rangers, letting them care for the national parks and learn new ways to experience the environment. Walk among old-growth coast redwoods, explore the interpretive displays, and hike the numerous hiking trails.
Hit a home run when you visit this museum devoted to our Nation’s pastime. Head to the Hall of Fame gallery to see plaques devoted to baseball greats and then check out uniforms that date back to the inception of the sport.
If you ever wanted to be in four places at once, then the Four Corners Monument is a place you need to visit. This unique spot where the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah intersect is a kid and Instagram favorite. The surrounding area has hiking and a visitor center where you can learn all about the area’s Navajo history.
The town of Gettysburg is full of history and a great spot for a family visit. You can view living history demonstrations, dine in a period tea parlor, and even experience the area aboard a steam-powered replica train. Head to the Gettysburg History Center to view a diorama of the 6,000-acre Battle of Gettysburg.
Whether you drive or hike to see the sign up close, or you find the perfect selfie spot from a distance, the Hollywood sign is a must-visit for families when they come to Los Angeles. Many families choose Griffith Park as their viewing location as you’ll get some epic views of downtown as well as train rides and hiking trails perfect for kids.
Immerse yourself in history when you visit Colonial Williamsburg. Visit the blacksmith shop to learn what this important trade created for those fighting in the Revolutionary War. Kids will love taking a carriage ride down Main Street and dining on colonial-inspired favorites at the tavern.
The fourth-most-visited National Park in the United States, Zion National Park is now part of Greater Zion, which also includes St. George, Springdale, Hurricane, Washington, and other towns. Take in the breathtaking scenery and surrounding red rock canyons as you head up to the mountains. Bring the kids for year-round outdoor recreation like mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, and more. Show them the open road and historic petroglyphs with exhilarating ATV and Jeep Adventure Tours, or a view from an aerial tour. Enjoy a musical performance at the magnificent Tuacahn Center for the Arts with its 2,000-seat amphitheater.
This historic dam just outside of Las Vegas is a road trip must-see when visiting this area of the country. Built in the 1930s to produce hydroelectric power, kids will be awed by its massive size. Make sure you stop at the visitor center to learn all about how it was built. A small number of tickets are available on-site to take an elevator down to see the inner workings of the dam.
The National Civil Rights Museum seeks to open a dialogue about the story of Black Americans who experienced and resisted discrimination—a history that spans slavery through the modern Civil Rights Movement, nonviolent protests to armed self-defense. The museum offers 260 artifacts, more than 40 new films, oral histories, interactive media, and external listening posts that guide visitors through five centuries of history.
Formerly known as the Sears Tower, this Chicago skyline landmark offers an epic view from its Skydeck that you won’t want to miss. Daredevils can walk out on The Ledge, a glass-enclosed platform where you are fully suspended above the street from 103 floors above.

Take a tour of the house, learn the story behind her legendary life, and be inspired by her “Failure is Impossible” speech.

You can also stay close to the action at Volcano House, camp nearby, or easily reach the park during a day trip from wherever you’re staying (it’s less than an hour from Hilo and two-three hours from Kailua-Kona). Catering to the preschool set, this new theme park will bring these beloved characters to life
Earlier this year it was announced that a second Peppa Pig Theme Park is scheduled to open in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2024. Designed especially for preschoolers, this standalone theme park will feature multiple rides, interactive attractions, themed playscapes, and shows, all based on recognizable locations and characters from the globally popular brand. “Every corner of the charming new park is crafted with preschoolers in mind,” the park shared via press release. “Through every experience, families will snort, giggle, and create their first theme park memories together with Peppa and her friends.”

Linus would be sad to hear the truly most sincere pumpkin patch is located right here in the great northwest! Actually – we’ve got a lot of ’em. Whether you are looking for some prime photo opportunities or for a full day of adventure, look no further. Our list contains the simple to the sublime. This year, be prepared to shoot apples from a cannon, get lost in a corn maze, ride on a cow train, and eat lots of good food. Some even host beer gardens. Oh! One features a fireworks show and another features a light show on the weekends. Plus, we’ve got a few tips and “tricks” you’ll need to make this October a blast.
Head north to find fall festivals, pumpkins, corn, and more
At this super popular farm, take a hayride out to the 40-acre pumpkin patch where you will find over 60 varieties of pumpkins. From ginormous 200 pounders to mini pumpkins, you’re sure to find the perfect jack-o'-lantern for every member of your family. And it’s not just about the pumpkins at Bob's. Kids come back year after year for the 10-acre corn maze, trike track, cow train, pony rides, kids' corn maze, and a new mining experience (extra fee). There’s also hot food concessions and face painting on the weekends. Psst! Get in line for the homemade hot donuts when you arrive; they're delicious and always sell out early in the day. And if that's not enough...you can book a personal bonfire here as well. They have a total of 18 fire pits inside the corn maze that can be rented out for small and large groups.
With a 20-acre pumpkin patch (and more than 30 varieties of pumpkins), a 15-acre Alice-In-Pumpkinland-themed corn maze, an apple slinger, petting zoo, and donut and espresso bar, this farm covers all the bases. Littles will especially love the non-scary I Spy Barn and all the fun harvest decorations around the farm (let's just say they're picture perfect). The Kids Adventure Maze is another great option for tots who are not quite ready for the 15-acre maze, but still want to enjoy "getting lost" at Craven Farm. Kids will wander through the Story Book Lane corn, viewing story boxes, until they come upon Adventure Alley where they can challenge each other on the obstacle course and finally make their way through the Maze answering farm-related questions to find the quickest way to the exit.
Good to Know: Farm activities can be purchased a la carte or get a wristband if your kids want to try it all.
Patch Perk: For added fun, ride the cow train or hay wagon ride, shoot the apple cannon, play a round of mini golf with your little putters or experience human foosball. Each are $5/person. (Axe throwing is also available on the weekends!)
Acres of oversized orange pumpkins aren't the only draw of this family farm up north. They've got lots to offer in the way of fall festivities too. The corn maze, duck races and picture board photos ops will keep the kids busy for a while. And when they're ready for more they can feed the chickens, climb through the tot tunnel and search for coins in the straw treasure hunt. Then it's off to see their farmyard favorites (think: chickens, goats, bunnies, pigs and ponies) if they still have any energy left.
Patch Perk: The animals take the spotlight here, and there's nothing cuter than watching baby chicks and ducks in the baby animal barn.
At this awesome farm, find a 50-acre pumpkin patch and 12-acre corn maze (in the shape of Washington state) as well as a children’s play area with a dump truck roller slide, hay pyramid, three-story hay maze, rubber duck races, petting farm, critter swings, cow train, barnyard sports zone, corn box, jumping pillows, pedal trikes, tractor pull, hay hoist and three-story hay barn. Looking for even more excitement? Try the ziplines, watch the live duck races, try your hand at the nine-hole putting course, take a wagon ride, nosh on kettle corn and hot drinks and listen to Farmer Ben's famous Four Little Pigs show. With all this excitement, a nap on the way home is almost guaranteed. Get your tickets online before heading out.
Patch Perk: This farm is great for little ones since it doesn’t have any scary Halloween decorations and instead has a fall harvest theme. And we love that you can u-pick apples when you visit, too. Gem Mining is available too - $10 per bag.
In addition to a 10-acre pumpkin patch and seven-acre corn maze, this farm features over 30 attractions, including a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin and candy cannons (on select days), a kids climbing wall, trikes, tire mountain and so much more. Tots will be especially happy to race rubber ducks, see Old McDonald's pals at the animal barn, get their faces painted, create crafts and more! Don’t forget to bring your camera. If you feel like noshing, on the weekends you can savor the culinary delightfulness of their roasted corn, hamburger, and hand popped kettle corn. Mom and Dad will appreciate the beer garden too!
Explore the twists and turns of the 5-acre corn maze, ride the bucket train, check out the farm animals, try your hand with the apple guns or head into the Kids Korral to slip down the tube slides, glide on the zip swing, move down the roller slides and check out the climbing tires. For adventure, try out the paintball gallery and jump pad. Oh, and don’t forget to pick some pumpkins while you are there, of course! Every activity requires one ticket. Or, if you just want to hit up the no frills, but lovely pumpkin patch, feel free to do so. It is open to the public at no charge.
Good to Know: Pets are not allowed at the farm, so please leave the pooch at home. If you want to experience all that Carleton has to offer, think about purchasing their wristband that includes unlimited tickets to all activities. Wristband activities include access to the corn maze, hayride, game zone, bucket train, and the Farm Korral.
You love their berries in the summer, so why not check out their pumpkin patch in the fall. During the month of October families can pick pumpkins of all shapes and sizes. The kids will love making their way through the corn maze only to sit down for mini donuts (weekends only) once they've made it to the end. We hear they have a great fill the wheelbarrow deal too. Be sure to ask them all about it.

What to do at Remlinger Farms Fall Harvest Pumpkin Festival and Family Fun Park? Well, you can catch a ride on the steam train, shoot the apple cannon, check out the 4-H barnyard, explore the hay maze, go on a hayride and toddler play area and take a spin on the famous Flying Pumpkins. If that's not enough excitement, zip down the giant slide, ride the mini roller coaster and, of course, pick some pumpkins in the U-pick fields (the price of the pumpkin is included in your admission). When your crew gets hungry, Remlinger Farms has a full menu complete with their own mini donuts (made with real pumpkin), plus fair food, caramel apples and kettle corn. If you’re too tired to pick your own pumpkin after enjoying the plethora of farm activities, stop by the Farm Market and purchase a pre-picked one.

Celebrate the Oxtober Fall Festival at Oxbow Farm and Conservation Center in Carnation! offers lots of pre-picked organic pumpkins of all shapes and sizes, along with fun activities for kids and adults. They have hayrides, a scavenger hunt, OxEd Harvest Tours, children's book readings, face painting and pumpkin fixings to decorate your own mini pumpkin (one per kiddo). Everyone will have a blast at the Sling King slingshot. Be sure to bring a debit or credit card if eats are on your mind. Farm-fresh food will be for sale at Oxbow's on-site Outdoor Kitchen. Be sure to register early for this popular festival.
This family-owned, couple-acre pumpkin patch has been open for more than 25 years (the farm has been in the family for over 50 years!) and includes cornstalks, a large variety of winter squash, seasonal vegetables and both U-pick and pre-picked pumpkins and gourds in all kinds of varieties (orange, French red, white, mini orange, mini white and sugar). While you're there, be sure to pick up mini hay bales, corn stalks and ornamental corn for your harvest decorations. And be sure to visit with the farm's animals in the barn. The beat part? This farm can accommodate groups with a reservation.

If you’re looking for a pumpkin farm with all the bells and whistles, Maris Farms is your one stop shop for harvest fun. In addition to a wide variety of pumpkins on more than eight acres, the farm sells gourds, cornstalk bundles, hay bales and carving kits. Kids will especially love seeing the farm animals, watching the pig and duck races (not together!), weaving through the five-plus acre cornfield maze and riding on the wagon ride. The Kids Courtyard, designed for ages 2-11, is where you can ride the cow train, wave to the goats, sheep and piglets and view the live beehive. Other activities include the glass pumpkin patch, catch & release trout fishing and a light show offered four times a night. For those older (and braver!) kiddos of yours, check out The Haunted Woods (a nighttime, scary corn maze), if you dare! In addition to pumpkins, the farm boasts their famous corn maze and a Family Fun Yard with a children's hay maze, corn pit, hay slides, rubber duck races, "Rodeo Ropin' Cows", farm animals, and a Pygmy goat walk. Carpinito Brothers also offers tractor-pulled hayrides and a farm fresh produce stand with seasonal fruits and veggies. If you and your crew work up an appetite, indulge in delicious kettle corn, popped fresh on-site, as well as cool drinks, hot beverages and, of course, the ever-so-popular Carpinito Bros. roasted sweet corn.

In 2018, Picha Farms was selected as one of the 10 Best Pumpkin Picking Spots in Washington by Best of American Towns, so you know the farm is going to be good! In addition to picking the perfect pumpkin in the U-pick fields, stroll through the farm's 5-acre corn maze, answering trivia questions along the way to earn a prize (hint: it's round and orange) when you answer them all. Other farm activities include the best slingshot in Puyallup (hit the target and win $5 off your pumpkin purchase), hayrides, the kiddie train ride and delish food (think: hot apple cider, kettle corn, homemade caramel apples, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs), plus a huge selection of gourds, cornstalks and squash.
Good to know: Dogs are part of the family and welcome at the patch. However, they are not allowed in confined spaces like the corn maze or hayride.

This family farm is perfect for first time pumpkin pickers and the under five crew. In addition to a large selection of pumpkins (sold by size), tykes will love the awesome corn maze and Jr. corn maze, plus the bubble table, duck races, cattle roping and slides. There's also tractors and tires to climb on, tractor train rides pulled by Grandpa Tim's John Deere, a hay maze, trike track, farm animals, apple sling shots, laser tag (on weekends only) and hay wagon rides around the farm. Good to know: The Thomasson Family Farm is part of an actual operating dairy farm, so please keep that in mind and wear appropriate clothing and shoes. If the skies are unforgiving, you may encounter rough and weathered structures and terrain. And please, no doggies allowed.

This family operated farm has been a South Sound favorite for more than 22 years and there's a good reason why. The farm boasts an impressive pumpkin harvest with more than 50 varieties of pumpkins, gourds, squash and ornamental corn. During October, the farm's Harvest Festival includes activities for kids of all ages. There's a 5-acre, "Hocus Pocus: A Quest to Save Jinx"-themed corn maze with over three miles of paths, a pumpkin sling shot, pedal karts and pony rides, plus Pumpkin Pete's Playtown and duck races. And don't forget about the farm animals, concessions, candy store and fun fall decorations. Phew! This farm has it all.
