Fan Fave Restaurant Recipes You Can Make At Home

It might seem counterintuitive to search out Thanksgiving restaurants or grocery stores where you can get your Thanksgiving dinner to go, but sometimes the cost is the same and you can greatly decrease the time and hassle of taking on the entire meal preparation.

Growing up, my grandfather was in charge of our Thanksgiving feast. He would arrive at our house with Ziplocs full of already-prepped onions, celery and bread cubes for teh stuffing. The smell of turkey wafted through our home all day long.

When I got older, I couldn’t wait to come home for the same annual Thanksgiving tradition, eventually learning the steps of the recipe and being able to create a tribute version of the original after my grandfather passed away.

But once I got married, Thanksgiving belonged to my in-laws and we chose to eat out or bring food since we never hosted at our house.

One year when we were living out-of-state and away from family, we even went to a buffet restaurant with just my husband and 3 year old. HINT: Do not go to a buffet with just your husband and 3 year old. You will end up taking turns grabbing food while the other one sits with the preschooler and never get to actually eat together.

My kids are teens and I’ve been married for over 25 years now, so I feel like I’m overqualified when it comes to finding options for eating out on Thanksgiving.

Choosing Your Options for Thanksgiving Dinner To Go

You can get the complete meal or just parts of the meal while you prepare the rest at home. As I see it, here are your options:

Option #1 – You can order only the MAIN COURSE (turkey, prime rib, vegetarian option) and make the SIDES and DESSERTS yourself.

Option #2 – You can order just the MAIN COURSE and SIDES, but make the DESSERTS yourself.

Option #3 – You can order the whole deal: MAIN COURSE, SIDES, and DESSERTS.

Option #4 – You can concentrate on making a homemade Thanksgiving feast and just grab DESSERTS from your favorite bakery or specialty grocery.

Tips for Enjoying Your Thanksgiving Meal

Don’t lock yourself into eating at the dining room table when you choose Thanksgiving takeout.

  • Be clear on whether your meal will be picked up hot and ready to serve on Thanksgiving Day — or whether you need to pick up days ahead and reheat the meal over a multi-hour time period. Plan accordingly.

  • You can eat outdoors! Especially in Orange County, the weather might be nice enough to enjoy your meal at a park or on your patio.

  • There ARE vegetarian and vegan options at some of these restaurants/stores. Risotto seems to be a popular main course to replace to replace the meat.

Thanksgiving by Mail

Hoping this makes your Thanksgiving easy and that you can be extra grateful for the time saved on meal prep while you spend time with family or friends.

Michele Whiteaker is a writer mom & nature guide who promotes play and empowers families to prioritize nature time through her online community resource of over 300 Orange County park profiles. She's widely quoted for coining the term “hummingbird parent” to explain her parenting strategy which allows kids some freedom outdoors.

Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster in Harlem is a great choice for a date night outing or special occasion, but you’re not about to drop $18 on dish of mac and cheese for your little one (as much as you adore them). However, Samuelsson’s latest venture in the neighborhood, a more casual and budget-friendly eatery dubbed Streetbird, is serving up food both you and the kids will enjoy in a fun and vibrant setting infused with a hip-hop and historic Harlem sensibility. Here’s the word on the bird!

Go for the Food, Stay for the Decor

Streetbird celebrates and combines two elements: Samuelsson’s love of Manhattan and his affinity for a zesty Rotissere chicken — the bird of the street, apparently.

Hand-painted chairs and beer barrels line the outside of the airy, open restaurant; the inside is just as diverse and wonderfully eccentric as the exterior. The walls are adorned with 80’s-inspired graffiti, posters of famed musicians like James Brown, vintage signs, high top and Chuck Taylor kicks, leather jackets, and more. It’s dynamic and really cool, with so much to look at—both kids and parents alike will be impressed with the diner-meets-Harlem Renaissance “so much to explore” decor. There’s even an impressive tower of old school boom boxes.

Take a Seat

The front of the restaurant is outfitted with a nice, long counter area where a large rotiserrie cooks/spins the chicken right before your eyes. An additional rounded counter can be found in the very back of the restaurant  — a spot which may appeal to older kids who think it’s cool to sit on red and yellow bar stools. Both counters give the restaurant a classic NYC diner vibe.

You’ll also find booths and individual tables here, but the area can be a bit tight for strollers; parents can stash them near the front of the restaurant. Take note of the cool old-fashioned photos and patterns on the table which showcase the Harlem Renaissance. Wooden high chairs, hand-painted by local artists, are covered in swirls and patterns. Even the bathroom on the main floor features awesome decor of vintage wallpaper and large, decorative TVs. (It’s also quite large, so there’s room for you and the kids to be in there all at the same time, should the need arise.)

The Bird on the Street

Chicken is obviously the main attraction on the menu. Chicken dishes available include whole or half rotisserie birds served with Samuelsson’s very special Smokey Q Sauce (which gives the chicken a little sweet kick; very subtle, very tasty); chicken & waffles (red velvet waffles, bourbon maple syrup, Streetbird spiced chocolate sauce) and the crispy bird sandwich (crispy chicken and cheddar on a potato roll with smokey Q, lettuce, tomato and pickles).

Still, vegetarians need not despair here. Non-chicken choices include various salads (with fantastic names, including, “The Fly Girl” and “Grace Jonezzz”),  and Return of the Mac, which is — what else? — mac and cheese, which we give high marks for fans of the dish of all ages. (It’s $8.50.)  Other non-meat options include veggie dishes, sides like cornbread, notti greens (green beans, chili, peanuts) and pickled cucumber.

Regardless of your culinary preferences, things are likely to get a bit messy — which is why you’ll find a big roll of paper towels on every table.

Good to Know

Chicken Fingers (called “Bird Tenders”) are also available, and very popular for kids, plus staffers will happily do their absolute best to make exceptions to accommodate special requests for children. For example, Streetbird offers traditional french fries, which can also be combined with sweet potato fries upon request, and if parents want a small side of mac and cheese for the kids— instead of a full portion — that’s a “do” as well. Desserts include super sweet cookies, and more.

The restaurant is open for brunch — served all day! — on weekends at 10:30 a.m.; while it is not currently accepting reservations, Streetbird does deliver.

Our final word?: Go! (Just be prepared to answer questions such as, “What’s a boom box?” and “Who is Billie Holiday?”)

If kids ruled the world, every day would start and end with dessert. Who votes for apple pie? Yep — it’s the season for the tart and sweet treat, and if you don’t have time to whip up your own, local restaurants and pie shops have you covered. Flip through our album to find out where you can get the best.

Fresh From the Rotisserie: Chicken Shop

Open flames from the rotisserie keep deep-dish apple pies warm at Soho House’s new Chicken Shop. Whole pies are sliced tableside, sized any which way you like them, and topped with house-made vanilla ice cream. The vibe is relaxed and you'll definitely want to kick back and make a whole dinner of it when you eye up other kid-friendly dishes like rotisserie chicken and mac ‘n' cheese.

If you’re finding that there’s even more traffic on Lincoln lately, and that the cries from the cars are for “more croissants!”, it’s all due to this new spot that serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner.   Kids and parents alike happily brave the bumper to bumper for a little burrata on toast and black rice salad.  We’ve been waiting for it, it’s here, and it’s kid friendly.  Superba Food + Bread is indeed superb.

From the family-friendly restaurateur/dad Paul Hibler (who redefined parental pizza preferences with Pitfire) Superba Food + Bread goes beyond the neighborhood bakery. The sweet doughy aroma of freshly baked specialties beckons babes to climb around the outdoor planters onto the patio and plop down for a fruity muffin of the day, buttermilk biscuit or homemade pretzel croissant. Roll up on your beach cruiser with toddler trailer and Fido in tow: Superba Food + Bread is just what the neighborhood ordered.

Commerce Meets Comfort Food
What to choose? On any given day Superba’s bakery counter touts a half dozen handmade loaves, from traditional French baguette to whole spelt to omega 3-rich chia seed sourdough spirals. Tempt your little ones with toast topped with homemade jam, made from the season’s freshest offerings. The signature pain au levain (like sourdough, yet lighter) is good all by itself, as most teething tots can attest, while older kiddos might opt for cheesy scrambled eggs to greet the day.  While the in-house bakery uses wheat in most of its breads, there are gluten-free options like their tasty sweet-tart lemon cake, made with rice and almond flour.

Park or park?
There’s easy beach access from Superba’s corner (on the SE side of Marco Place), a veritable café campus, with oversized patio planters enticing little squirmers to climb and explore adjacent to the outdoor bench and bistro seating. The dedicated parking lot accommodates equal numbers of cars and bicycles, with ample stroller and scooter parking safely shielded from the line of traffic. In addition, there’s street parking on Lincoln for overflow so everyone can find a spot.  And with new shops popping up regularly (see the super-duper toy emporium Huzzah just steps away), you’ll be a regular.

Watching the World Go By
Sit down, take a load off. Superba’s open. All day. Breakfast. Brunch. Lunch. Dinner. Giant glass garage-like doors roll up creating a seamless space, indoors joining outdoors. Your kids can cozy up to on a patio cushion while you kick back with a beverage; maybe a piping hot cappuccino with a vanilla brioche sticky bun big enough for sibs to share. Or take a break to sip something more relaxing during their nightly supper, ranging from rotisserie duck to fried chicken with biscuits. Delivery service is in the works.  Cue the Hallelujah chorus.
