Tilden Lane Farm offers three types of spruce trees to cut yourself (a type good for holding the weight of lights and decorations) and two kinds of firs, which tend to last longer. Stock is extremely limited if you want to cut your own, so head there on Thanksgiving weekend for the best selection. The farm also offers fresh-cut Fraser fir trees. Hand saws are available or you can bring your own and staff can help with tree wrapping and securing to your vehicle. Trees are $80 and wreaths are $40. Don’t miss the farm-produced honey and you may be able to see some of the bees working on a warm day. Although there are no bathroom facilities on-site, you can make a lovely day of it in the nearby villages of Huntington or Northport by visiting some great restaurants and shops. Why the Obsession with YouTube?

It may seem foreign to parents, but making a YouTube video isn’t all that much different from wanting to stage a talent show for friends and family; it’s just the audience that’s bigger.

“Even though you may have concerns about the risks of broadcasting on the web—and they are legitimate,” says this article from Common Sense Media, “your kid may see it as a way of expressing herself, learning digital video skills, sharing with friends and experimenting creatively. Officially, YouTube forbids children under the age of 13 from creating their own accounts, and children between ages 13 and 17 are only allowed to open accounts with parental permission. Of course, these rules don't say anything about parents opening an account for their child; this is allowed. Ryan, the eight-year-old star of Ryan's World, is one of YouTube's biggest stars, with over 24 million subscribers tuning in to watch him play and review toys, do science experiments, and more. It's no paltry gig—Ryan earned a reported $24 million in 2019, which includes revenue from not only his YouTube Channel but also his line of toys that can be found at big box stores everywhere.

"Ryan was watching a lot of toy review channels—some of his favorites are TheTubeFamily and Hulyan Maya—because they used to make a lot of videos about Thomas the Tank Engine, and Ryan was super into Thomas,” his mother said in an interview with TubeFilter. "One day, he asked me, 'How come I’m not on YouTube when all the other kids are?’ So we just decided—yeah, we can do that. Then, we took him to the store to get his very first toy—I think it was a LEGO train set—and it all started from there.”

How to Make a YouTube Channel for Kids

1. Create a Gmail account for your child if they are under 13 years old. This will give them a YouTube account but not a YouTube channel.

2. Create a YouTube Channel by clicking "Select My Channel" on the sidebar on the left of the YouTube homepage. This is where users can select the name to be associated with their YouTube channel. For kids, do not use their real/whole names since these names will be broadcast to anyone watching the videos.

3. Set the privacy settings so that everything is private or unlisted. Private means that only those you invite to view the channel can watch the videos; unlisted means only those with the particular video links can see them. Also, turn off comments so your kid won't have to read unkind or inappropriate remarks from other users. Note: These privacy settings mean that only friends and family can view your child's page, which is great when it comes to keeping them safe; not so great if they're trying to build a following.

Tips for Keeping Kids Safe Online

Edit for Privacy Purposes
Since putting up videos on YouTube essentially allows anyone (depending on your channel's privacy settings) to see and hear your child, parents must keep a close eye on what their kids are doing to make sure they aren't accidentally revealing any personal information. We recommend that you don't allow your children to show their faces in their videos. This means OK to narrating Minecraft games, sporting events and stop-motion animation shows, and yes to a stuffed animal or puppet performances where they do the voices.

Also, YouTube has new safety measures when it comes to kids. Parents will be able to create a supervised Google account, which will come with content settings and limited features. You can see all the details here.

Be Their #1 Viewer
Be sure to watch all of the videos your child posts. This can be tedious, but you have to make sure your kids aren't accidentally revealing any personal information (where they go to school, where they live, etc.).

Put Limits on Recording Time

For the Zip at the Zoo: Treetop Adventure and Nature Trek at the Bronx Zoo

The Bronx Zoo's Treetop Adventure and Nature Trek is home to a couple of ziplines. Spanning more than 400 feet in each direction, the pair of ziplines travel 50 feet above the Bronx River, with the platform for the zip back even higher than the initial launch pad. (You zip across, then dash back.) The zipline is outfitted with dual, side-by-side lines for double the zipping fun. Additionally, each course of the ropes course Treetop Adventure does include a short zipline element in various forms, such as the boat zip, pictured above. Participants must be age seven or older, between 50 and 275 pounds, and able to reach 5'6″ from flat feet. 5. For Fun with Colors: Color Factory

Color Factory NYC is a vibrant and interactive experience that celebrates hues of all kinds in myriad ways, and it’s one of the first immersive experiences to bring a massive ball pit to NYC. This experience is all about creativity, play, joy, discovery, and yeah—lots of color.

You’ll explore 20,000 square feet and 16 installations of Technicolor, Instagram-friendly fun, such as ombré floating balloons, a walkable infographic leading you to your “secret color,” a palette of colorful treats featuring a custom ice cream scoop, a unique activity on color and human connection, and a luminous dance floor.

6. For a STEAM Crossroads: Artechouse

7. For a Sweet Scoop: Museum of Ice Cream

The Museum of Ice Cream is an immersive walk-through experience dedicated to the sweet treat. You’ll leave the space knowing much more about ice cream than you ever did, and recovering from a sugar rush. That’s because the museum has 12 multi-sensory exhibits across three floors that teach the history of the sweet, as well as unlimited ice cream samples of five different types. 8. For a Dive into Kid-Favorite Franchises: CAMP

CAMP is a multi-sensory experience that places kids in the middle of their favorite franchises, from Paw Patrol to Disney’s Mickey Mouse.

At the moment, CAMP has opened its doors to visitors who want to explore the Casita from the hit Disney movie, Encanto. Visit the home of the Madrigal family in person and experience the different rooms—including Antonio’s rainforest to Isabela’s floral wonderland, and even, quite possibly, the room of He Who We Don’t Talk About…and more. 9. For the Super Secret Spy Mission: Spyscape

10. For a Shift in Perspective: Museum of Illusions

Created in Zagreb, Croatia (with additional outposts in Vienna, Kuala Lumpur, and beyond) this museum is less technicolor extravaganza, and more exercise for your brain (in a good way). But don’t worry: fun photo ops still abound.

Visitors can explore more than 70 elements and experiences that include “illusionistic rooms,” optical illusions, and puzzles. Every “piece” in the museum is accompanied by a clear and concise explanation of what’s causing or creating the illusion; mathematical, biological, and psychological concepts are all touched upon, as are perception, vision, and how the human brain works.

This museum is an outstanding (and very fun) way to engage kids with complex scientific principles, and help them understand through experience. The well-curated gift shop allows you to take home some of the brain-bending fun.

13. For a Journey Through Art: Hall des Lumières

One of the newest additions to the NYC experiences roster, the Hall des Lumières merges art with technology. The inaugural exhibit will showcase its high-tech approach to classic art with an exploration of Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt. Digital renderings of Klimt’s artworks were custom-made and mapped to the space at the Hall des Lumières, making the imaging completely unique to this exhibit. Incredible wall-to-ceiling displays place visitors directly into the world of the paintings, while a special soundtrack completes the feel.

Tickets get you entry into the main exhibit, as well as smaller digital experiences. At the time of this writing, that includes a small installation on Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an audio-visual 5-minute experience titled “5 Movements,” and “Recoding Entropia,” a film about the human mind and the concept of endless void. Exhibits on display will change throughout the Hall des Lumières’ lifespan, so stay tuned for cool things in the future.

Lake Placid, NY

Drive from NYC: 5 hours

Lean into the winter weather and head north—way north—to the Adirondacks and Lake Placid.

What to Do:

Skiing families should head right to one of New York's premier ski resorts, Whiteface Mountain.
Visit the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, tour the site of North America's first winter Olympics, see the Olympic torch and even visit the Olympic Jumping Complex.
For more thrills, go for a dog sled ride on Mirror Lake, head to nearby North Elba to slide down its toboggan chute, or take a ride on the longest mountain coaster in the country, the Cliffside Coaster.
Other winter fun includes hiking (for all levels), snowshoeing, skating, and hockey on Mirror Lake.
For even more winter fun, head to the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, a 15-minute drive away. A tradition since 1897, this celebration of the season includes sports, performances, two parades, and three sets of spectacular fireworks. The 2023 festival is Feb. 3-12.

What to do: Philadelphia has something for everyone this winter, including big museum exhibits, multiple winter fests, and of course, celebrating history.

Go and see Disney 100: The Exhibition, making its premiere at the Franklin Institute on February 18.
An evergreen and must-see for families is the Please Touch Museum, an interactive museum for kids of all ages, which recently unveiled its expanded Market experience (an awesome mini supermarket.) It's open Wednesday through Sunday.
Check out this schedule of fun art events in partnership with local cultural organizations to see what's going on when you visit.
There are winter fests galore here, with light displays, ice carving, ice-skating rinks, and more. Check out Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest, Winter in Franklin Square, Winter at Dilworth Park, and Chestnut Hill on Ice.

Rochester is home to one of the finest children's museums in the country, the Strong National Museum of Play, centrally located downtown. Exhibits are dedicated to superheroes, video games (the Video Game Hall of Fame is here), Sesame Street, and much, much more.
You can also take to the slopes here at nearby Bristol Mountain, or do some snow tubing at Greystone Tubing.
Like nature walks? At the Cumming Nature Center, they have groomed trails for affordable cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing. Also, check out the Birdsong Fairy Trail in Mendon Ponds Park. This easy walk is home to adorable fairy houses of all kinds, and at its end, visitors are often able to have birds eat seed right out of their hands.
Need more nature? Make your way to the Lazy Acre Alpaca Farm in Bloomfield, to meet the fuzzy residents, take a tour, and then stock up on cozy alpaca merch!
For food, good kid-friendly choices include Jine's Restaurant and The Gatehouse, and this is, of course, the home of Wegman's where you can get all kinds of pre-prepared, affordable food to go.

Where to Stay: For a funky and fun option, consider School 31 Lofts, located close to downtown in a former public school—the blackboards and coat cubbies are still there! (It's also across the street from the art museum, the Memorial Art Gallery.)

More traditional lodging that's also family-friendly can be found at the Woodcliff Hotel & Spa, which is in nearby Fairport.

What to do: Known as the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Lancaster hosts indoor and outdoor fun in the winter months.

Families with train-crazy kids should catch a ride on the Strasburg Rail Road—America’s oldest continuously operating railroad. Take in views of Amish Country on an authentic steam train, and choose from closed, or open-air cars, as well as fun theme rides like a bingo train.
Shop with the locals at the Green Dragon Farmers Market & Auction in Ephrata. It's a flea market, a farmer's market, and live auctions for hay, feed, and more. For a more curated shopping experience, try The Old Country Store, for quilting supplies, Amish crafts, toys, and collectibles. The Lancaster Central Market, established in 1730, is an institution where local fresh food and produce are sold.
Go on a self-guided driving tour of the region's iconic covered bridges.
Head to Shady Maple Smorgasbord, the largest all-inclusive buffet in the country serving PA Dutch country favorites and lots more.
The town of Lilitz holds an annual Fire & Ice Festival. Now running from February 17-26, the fest features wow-worthy ice sculptures, eats from local restaurants and food trucks, shopping, and a day just for kids, Winterfuderland. (February 20)

Where to stay:

For Adventure Time, Gumball and Powerpuff Girls fans, the only choice is the Cartoon Network Hotel in Lancaster. (If you come in the warmer months, it's right next to the amusement park Dutch Wonderland.) Slated for early February are special Amazing Weekends of Gumball.

Calling all baseball fans! Head to the temple to America's favorite pastime, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY to get primed for spring training! (This is one of those places where you do need to book tickets in advance.)
Don't miss the museum's "Starting Nine," a scavenger hunt built for hard-core fans that challenges visitors to find their favorite team’s Starting Nine, a lineup of must-sees from the museum's vast collection.
Unfortunately, Cooperstown's popular Farmer's Museum, one of the oldest rural life museums in the country, is closed until April, as is the area art museum, the Fenimore Art Museum.
Part of Coopertown's charm is its picturesque Main Street, which you'll definitely want to stroll down, and where you'll find shops specializing in baseball souvenirs and collectibles.

Where to stay: The Otesaga is the stately luxury hotel if you're looking for a grand experience, and several bed and breakfasts are located right in the center of town (the Inn at Cooperstown and the Landmark Inn are popular.) If you need something a bit more kid-friendly, you can find chain hotels like Holiday Inn Express just outside of town.)

What to do: Step back in time at the Mystic Seaport Museum, which covers 19 acres along the Connecticut shore. This leading maritime museum features play areas just for kids, historical reenactors that bring history to life, and four National Historic Landmark vessels, including the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, America’s oldest commercial ship still in existence!

You can also explore what's under the water in Mystic at the Mystic Aquarium. The celebrated aquarium offers exhibits both indoors and out and is home to penguins, seals, sharks, beluga whales, rays, and many more sea-dwellers. For an extra special visit, book an animal encounter.

Where to stay: Located in the heart of town on the water, The Whaler's Inn is a classic choice. The main inn offers rooms with a junior bunk area for kids, while the Noank House has family-friendly rooms with two queens beds conveniently located on the first floor. For a chain, the Mystic Hilton is a good choice (located across the street from the aquarium), or you can settle into your own cottage suite at The Carriage House.

What to do:

There's something for every kind of family in western Massachusetts. If you're looking for a family-friendly ski getaway, Butternut in Great Barrington is a great, affordable, spot for little ones learning to ski, and it also offers snow tubing.
The Norman Rockwell Museum is located in nearby Stockbridge. In addition to showcasing much of the artist's iconic work, the museum mounts exhibitions dedicated to illustration and new perspectives on Rockwell's work. Additionally, you can visit the small workshop where he did much of his painting.
If you like your art with more edge, head to Mass MOCA in North Adams, the largest contemporary art center in the country. (It is huge, with lots of wide open spaces, making it a place where it's easy to social distance.) Kids can really roam free here, too. The center houses several works by light artist James Turrell, and its three floors of Sol Lewitt galleries are impressive. Mass MoCA also has a Kidspace with rotating exhibits and programming, allowing kids to get in on the art-making action.

Where to Stay: The Briarcliff Motel is fun and casual, a 1960s motel that's been upgraded for today. In Stockbridge, its sister property, the Red Lion Inn (est. 1773) can offer you a bed in the historic main inn. With kids, it's probably best to stay in the roomier and more modern accommodations of Maple Glen, also on the grounds.

In North Adams, The Porches is a boutique inn with retro-industrial architecture (revamped mill workers' homes) and modern comforts located right across the street from the Mass MoCA. The Williams Inn in nearby Williamstown, MA is a good choice for a relaxed yet refined stay, with the added bonus of elevated comfort food on site at the property's restaurant and bar, The Barn.

If you haven't ever done it, we definitely recommend heading up to SkyPark at Santa’s Village, at least once in your lifetime. The whole village comes into its own and lights up for a jolly good time. From breakfast with Santa to tea with Mrs. Claus, you can get as little or as much Santa in your life as you want. Time to dress the kids in their holiday best (be it a festive dress or plaid jacket) and head out in search of the cutest Seattle Santa pictures around. Here’s how to plan your annual holiday photo shoot at one of our favorite places to snag a Santa photo in Seattle, holiday wish list in hand. Say cheese!

1. Nordstrom Downtown Santa - Santa Lane

Your annual pilgrimage to see Santa at his ornate shop at the downtown Nordstrom is back on for 2022. That's right, after three years, Santa will once again return to the Downtown Nordstrom window on 6th and Pine to greet fans and take gift orders from kids of all ages. Photos will be printed on-site, and reservations are not available.

Good to Know: If waiting in line downtown isn't your speed, kids can also see Santa over brunch at Nordstrom stores throughout Washington. Make reservations soon for this area favorite.

October’s main event is just around the corner, and we’ve got plenty of safe and fun places kids can go trick-or-treating in Portland

Looking for spook-tacular places to take the entire family trick-or-treating in Portland this Halloween? Look no further. We’ve got the inside scoop on where to find the best treat-or-treat goodies and other boo-tastic events that promise fun for the entire household. All you need to do is put on your costume and head out after an early dinner to get the jump on Halloween this year.

Where to Go Trick-or-Treating on the Westside

Howloween at the Zoo
Howloween at the Zoo promises educational, safe, and fun for everyone this October. Costumed kids can participate in a zoo-wide scavenger hunt where they will learn about healthy habitats along the way. Yummy treat bags are available for your little adventurers at the end for just $3. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are free with zoo admission (Even infants need to be counted and must have a ticket to enter.). All you have to do is pick a time slot and the best costume, then head over for Halloween fun!

Good to Know: Although this event is designed for kids ages 2-12, everyone is welcome.

2022 Monster Mash in Lake Oswego
For families with the twelve and under set, Lake Oswego has your Halloween afternoon covered- and not just because you get to stay in your car. Eight locations will come to your car to deliver toys, treats, or trinkets AND the first 1000 participants get a free trick-or-treat bag. Locations are listed on the website where you can also download a map so start thinking of ways to decorate your car and your family now.

Multnomah Village: Halloween in the Village
Sometimes it takes a village to make sure everyone has a memorable Halloween. All Ages Drag Bingo with Poison Waters

The Best Westside Neighborhoods for Trick-or-Treat Fun
Slightly older trick-or-treaters can enjoy the steeper streets of the neighborhood close to Forest Park along the Wildwood Trail. Park near NW Thurman Ave. and 28th Ave. and walk over the bridge into the neighborhood. In Southwest Portland, the Hillsdale neighborhood is a good one to walk around. Park near Rieke Elementary or Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School and enjoy a short, but spirited, walk between Vermont and Chestnut streets.

Sellwood Community House
The Sellwood Community House knows how to throw a fall festival. Start the day off by joining the Monster March parade and stay afterwards for their carnival. Enjoy outdoor games, music, food, a photo booth, face painting, candy, and other Halloween delights. Wear your costumes, and be sure to register in advance for tickets. The Spooktacular Carnival is recommended for children ages 5-12 years old, and has a fee of $15 per child.

Downtown Gresham hosts its annual Safe Trick-or-Treat event on Halloween evening. Wear your costumes and head to historic Main Avenue to enjoy free candy, refreshments, and specials at participating businesses.

Insider Tip: On October 29, kids can also trick or treat at Gresham Station, if their candy coffers can't wait.

Trick-or-Treat Alberta Street
Alberta Street is planning on holding their annual Trick-or-Treat Alberta Street event but details are yet to come. Traditionally held from early afternoon until sunset, it’s designed for younger children and families, with businesses handing out candy to costumed kids.

Halloween Themed 5k Beer Run at Level Beer
Parents will appreciate this event that begins and ends at Level Beer. Costumes are strongly encouraged at this annual Halloween event where participants can run, walk, or jog the untimed course. Dogs and strollers are welcome, and adults can enjoy a free craft beer and will receive a collector’s pint glass at the finish line. Plus, the entire fam has access to event activities including games, goodies, and a costume contest. Registration is limited, so sign up ASAP.
