Catering to the preschool set, this new theme park will bring these beloved characters to life

Earlier this year it was announced that a second Peppa Pig Theme Park is scheduled to open in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2024. Designed especially for preschoolers, this standalone theme park will feature multiple rides, interactive attractions, themed playscapes, and shows, all based on recognizable locations and characters from the globally popular brand. “Every corner of the charming new park is crafted with preschoolers in mind,” the park shared via press release.  “Through every experience, families will snort, giggle, and create their first theme park memories together with Peppa and her friends.”

The park recently shared all the new rides and attractions we can expect to see when the Texas park is opened next year.

Families will ride, soar, and set sail together on five new rides:

  • Daddy Pig’s Roller Coaster – Take a ride with Daddy Pig in his iconic red car and go on an unexpected adventure when Mr. Bull’s “digging up the road” sends you on a curvy exploration of Daddy Pig’s new shortcut. This family-friendly thrill ride is the perfect first roller coaster for brave little visitors.
  • Peppa Pig’s Balloon Ride – Hold on tight as you soar into the sky and enjoy amazing views of PEPPA PIG Theme Park on this family-friendly aerial carousel ride.
  • Grandad Dog’s Pirate Boat Ride – Anchors away! Sail with Grandad Dog on this family boat ride to find his hidden treasure.
  • Grampy Rabbit’s Dinosaur Adventure – Take a ride on a friendly dinosaur and discover prehistoric surprises around every corner of Grampy Rabbit’s Dinosaur Park. Parents can ride along with their little explorers on this epic dino quest.
  • Mr. Bull’s High Striker – Once the hammer hits the bell on Mr. Bull’s High Striker, your family will bounce up to the sky. Hold on tight and be prepared for a surprise because, after all, what goes up, must come down!

Splash, climb, and crawl! The fun keeps coming with water play, games, and just-my-size playscapes.

  • Muddy Puddles Splash Pad – Have an oinktastic time with Peppa and George doing their favorite thing: jumping up and down in “muddy puddles.” This lively play area has spouting fountains, slides, and other watery surprises to keep the play experiences super fun, splashy, and cool on hot days.
  • Peppa’s Pedal Bike Tour and George’s Tricycle Trail – Little ones will pedal their way through a camping adventure in the woods, through the icy mountains to see the sights and sounds of the great outdoors. Smaller cyclists can enjoy George’s shorter pedal path adventure on tricycles built just for them.
  • Fun Fair – Meet Peppa and her friends for a fairground adventure full of free games and rides, including Miss Rabbit’s hot air balloon and Mr. Bull’s High Striker ride that take you up into the sky for a bird’s eye view of the theme park.
  • George’s Fort – Make your way through a maze in Granny Pig’s Garden and discover George’s Fort, just waiting to be explored.
  • Grandpa Pig’s Greenhouse – Discover what Grandpa Pig is growing – could it be something red and squishy? Or green and round? Slide around his greenhouse and find out.
  • Peppa Pig’s Treehouse – Climb into Peppa’s not-so-high treehouse, then slide down to the bottom for even more free play fun.
  • Rebecca Rabbit’s Playground – Get active and find all the ways to play around the rabbit burrows, as you jump, crawl or hop over to explore Rebecca Rabbit’s Playground.
  • Madame Gazelle’s Nature Trail – Discover what has left mysterious footprints on the ground as you explore the nature trail with Madame Gazelle.
  • Mr. Potato’s Showtime Arena – Join Peppa and her friends under the canopy at Mr. Potato’s stage with live shows packed full of songs, games, snorts, and giggles throughout the day.
  • The Cinema – Take a break from the sunny fun by watching some of your favorite episodes of PEPPA PIG on the big screen in our indoor cinema.

Families can expect to meet with Peppa and her giggly pals for an enjoyable theme park visit. The first Peppa Pig Theme Park opened in the U.S. in 2022 and is located in Winter Haven, FL, adjacent to LEGOLAND Florida. Visitors to Peppa Pig Theme Park in Florida know that this park really caters to little ones and their families. Designed to be a child’s first visit to a theme park, the Florida park offers the majority of its rides with no minimum height restrictions. It is also a Certified Autism Center with a sensory guide, trained staff, and special signage so that all visitors can fully experience the park.

Visit the Peppa Pig Theme Park website for more details and to sign up for email updates!

Getting there is just part of the adventure

Off the coast of Belize sits an island that’s home to crystal clear waters, the second largest coral reef in the world, and Margaritaville Beach Resort Ambergris Caye. This recently opened resort exemplifies the laid-back style associated with the Margaritaville brand. Remotely located, the resort takes some time to get to, but it’s worth the effort for adventurous families looking for a relaxing, off-the-beaten-path vacation.

Getting to Margaritaville Beach Resort Ambergris Caye

Margaritaville Beach Resort Ambergris Caye, Belize signage with palm trees and a parrot on it

Located on the northern end of Ambergris Caye (pronounced “key”), Margaritaville Beach Resort is miles away from hectic life and was built to be a getaway from guests. As such, it takes effort to get there, but it is well worth it.

Guests can fly into Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City. The airport, while small, does offer places to grab a bite to eat or a drink, or to purchase souvenirs. Once in Belize City, guests need to make their way to San Pedro, which is approximately 36 miles north on Ambergris Caye. The quickest way to get there? Take a small puddle jumper plane!

While this might sound daunting, an airline in Belize called Tropic Air makes this flight multiple times per day. Their planes range from 4-seaters to larger planes that seat around 15 passengers. The flight is 15 minutes from take-off to landing and takes you directly over the coral reef, providing amazing views.

Once in San Pedro, you’ll head to the resort’s guest lounge center. Here, guests can cool down, enjoy a water or bottle of Landshark beer, and provide their credit card for incidentals while waiting for the water taxi that takes guests to Margaritaville.

Accommodations in Paradise

At the end of the 30-minute boat ride to the resort, employees greet visitors at the dock with margaritas for adults and cold washcloths. After a quick check-in at the open-air front desk and a view of the large flip-flop and a pop-top,  you’ll proceed to your suite.

View of open air lobby with thatched roof, compass design on floor, large blue flip flop and sliver pop top sculpture

The resort’s layout is unique because the suites are not all in one building. Spread across the grounds are ten buildings with multiple units in each one.

Two story white building with suites inside and stairs going up front. Sign on bottom left says Coconut Telegraph 8.

With only 55 units in the entire resort, it always feels open and quiet. There are also four different suite options, all with outdoor seating and a pull-out couch. Some units also have full kitchen options, making it a relaxing choice for families. The options:

  • One-Bedroom Suite – up to 570 square feet inside; up to 208 square feet outside
  • Master Bedroom Suite (also available with an oceanfront view) – approximately 900 square feet; 200 square feet outside
  • Two-Bedroom Suite (also available with an oceanfront view) – approximately 1,141 square feet; 280 square feet outside
  • Three-Bedroom Oceanfront Penthouse Suite – approximately 1,795 square feet; 1,850 exterior with wrap-around patio

Bathroom vanity that extends from one wall to the other. Two mirrors hang over two sinks. Wall behind mirrors has glass subway tiles while vanity under sinks is dark brown and has white towels inside.

Every room in the suites is large, airy, and bright. The decor is beachy, with plenty of references to limes, sea life, and relaxation. Bathrooms offer a large walk-in shower and the large vanities have two sinks, which is helpful when families are getting ready. There are also safes and mini-refrigerators in every room.

Dining and Margaritas

Of course, when at Margaritaville, it always feels like it’s 5 o’clock somewhere. With two bars, including one located at the main pool, guests can always get their favorite cocktail, mocktail, or soda. The resort also has a 24-hour retail store where guests can purchase bottled drinks, snacks, and branded merchandise.

Looking at entrance to Riddles in the Sand restaurant

When it’s time to eat, there is only one restaurant, Riddles in the Sand, at the resort. Don’t let that give you pause. Featuring locally sourced dishes that are inspired by Belize, the menu has something for everyone. There are kid-friendly options available as well.

Another fun option is the resort’s Sunbaked BBQ area. Barbequing is part of the Belizean culture, so what better way to enjoy some time outside enjoying the Caribbean air? With four BBQ areas, each equipped with a Big Green Egg ceramic grill, table, and chairs, there’s plenty of room to gather with family and any new friends you’ve made at the resort. In the mood to sit back and let someone else do the cooking? One of the resort’s private chefs can operate the grill and help get everyone fed.

Another option if you’re staying in a suite that has a full kitchen: ask the concierge to do some shopping before your arrival. They’ll have your refrigerator stocked so that when you arrive, you’ll have everything you need if you choose to eat in your suite a few times over your stay.

Relaxation and Wellness

There are plenty of places to put your feet up to relax at Margaritaville Beach Resort Amerbris Caye. Located in Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve, the resort offers a beach and views of crystal clear water. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the national park and marine reserve offers guests the opportunity to snorkel right outside their suite.

If you’re not into the open water, the resort has two pools. The pool next to the open-air lobby area offers cabana-style loungers, a hot tub, and a swim-up bar with seating. For those looking for a quieter location, there is a second pool towards the back of the resort that’s perfect for families.

Looking over pool at palm trees and cabana swing

When looking for some space just sit and put your feet up, there’s plenty of seating in the lobby to sit and take a breather and hammocks next to the front pool. Or head to the resort’s dock where you’ll find lounge chairs along the way and chairs under the tiki-style cover at the end. It’s also a great place to enjoy the sunset every night.

Looking out to the dock. Lounge chair areas are on either side, with blue umbrellas and cushions.

For those who like to get some exercise in while on vacation, the resort has a small gym and pickleball courts that are open to all guests.

But what’s a relaxing vacation without a spa? The St. Somewhere Spa can help adults decompress with nail or body services. And with five separate bungalows for massages, including one for couples, it’s easy to escape reality for a few hours.

Excursions from the Margaritaville Beach Resort Ambergris Caye

While spending time at Margaritaville Beach Resort Ambergris Caye is relaxing, it’s a fact that it is in a secluded location. And for some families, that might cause them to reconsider visiting. However, visitors to the resort can have their downtime, and when they’re ready to explore, the concierge at Margaritaville is prepared to help.

Being located next to the coral reef means there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports. Hire a local boat to take the family out snorkeling or fishing. The resort offers a sea-to-table program where the chef will cook whatever you catch that day. It doesn’t get any fresher than that!

Ask about being taken out to Hol Chan Marine Reserve. With approximately 4,5000 acres of coral reefs, snorkelers will see various fish, rays, nurse sharks, and other wildlife.

They can also take you to Shark Ray Alley, where you can feed and swim with large nurse sharks.

Afterward, your captain can take you over to Caye Caulker to get a bite to eat and some souvenirs. With a motto of “Go Slow,” residents and visitors use golf carts to get around the island if they’re not walking.

Street art sign that says Caye Caulker

Guests at Margaritaville Beach Resort can also rent a golf cart and spend a little time exploring the area. It’s about an hour to get back to San Pedro, but there are plenty of small towns and other resorts to explore in between.

If your family is up for an adventure, loves the outdoors, and wants to relax under the sun, then Margaritaville Beach Resort Ambergris Caye is for you. With activities on-site and the ability to take a wide variety of excursions, you’ll never need to worry about being bored.

Things to Note

  • There is a $45 USD resort fee charged per night. The fee covers boat transportation to and from San Pedro, WiFi, snorkeling gear, and the ability to borrow bikes or kayaks for the day.
  • The resort also offers day passes if you’re staying in the area. The pass costs $15 per person, is capacity-controlled and monitored. Guests can use the pool, bar areas, restaurant, and beach.
  • This particular Margaritaville resort is not all-inclusive. But for those who don’t want to think about anything on their vacation, an optional upgrade includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks for $125 USD per person per day.
  • No cribs, kids club, or nanny services are available as the resort caters to families with children who want to explore together.
  • The resort and its employees are into conservation and helping to preserve the environment. Backed against a nature preserve, many trees and animals are behind and within the resort. Visitors are also encouraged to bring their reusable bottles (if you forget, you can buy one in the retail store). There’s a water filling station next to the front desk to fill bottles before heading out for the day.
  • Since the resort is located next to the nature reserve, there are mosquitos, especially in the rainy season, which is from June to November. Bring lots of bug spray.
  • Also be sure to bring reef-safe sunscreen, applying it often, and a hat. And drink a lot of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. The sun in Belize is intense and can make you ill quickly.

Chace’s Pancake Corral
Craving some down home diner food? Head to longtime Bellevue hot spot, Chace’s Pancake Corral where the food and service are both delightful. We love breakfast at Chace’s because all our favorite breakfast foods are on the menu, but we’re partial to the biscuits with sausage gravy. The buttery biscuits topped with a generous serving of gravy are to die for. Kids can choose from chocolate chip dollar pancakes, traditional breakfast platters or bear pancakes. If you’re coming for lunch, you’ll find an extensive menu, but it’s the Chicken Fried Steak that is the real crowd-pleaser. It’s delish! Ciao Bella! Tutta Bella’s authentic, wood-fired pizza pies taste like a slice of Italian heaven and their Bellevue restaurant is just as kid-friendly as it is delicious. From the Wikki Stix that are passed out to keep hangry kiddos busy to the open kitchen that allows kids to watch as their pizzas are being made, Tutta Bella is an easy restaurant to dine at with kids in tow. Psst…if your kids aren’t feeling like pizza, there is an extensive kid’s menu with favorites like pasta al burro or the Neapolitan meatball. Don’t forget the gelato for dessert!

Lincoln South Food Hall
Bellevue’s Lincoln South Food Hall offers a full-service dining scene that not only provides unique and delish chef-driven quick serve menu choices, but has plenty of options for even the pickiest of eaters and a family-friendly vibe we love. Located in the heart of downtown Bellevue, across the street from Bellevue Square and right below the Cinemark Reserve movie theatre is where you will find the Lincoln South Food Hall. Park in the Lincoln Square parking garage (parking is free with validation from the Lincoln South restaurants or shops within the Bellevue Collection) or access it from any of the covered skybridges that connect The Bellevue Collection and Bellevue Square with Lincoln Square North.

The space consists of seven fast-casual eateries all under one roof—each with a totally different vibe—but all with communal seating. If you’re thinking this sounds like a food court, think again. Lincoln South Food Hall has one general manager and one executive chef and offers a casual dining environment, which you could call part kitchen, part counter and part bar, and sets itself apart from other communal-type dining settings by providing guests with extra amenities (think: linen napkins, stainless-steel trays and a friendly staff who are on hand to bring you to-go containers, clear your plates and even fill your water glasses). Whether you’re in the mood for poké or have a hankering for street tacos, ramen or burgers, Lincoln South Food Hall has you covered.

Lunchbox Laboratory
Lunchbox Lab is your go-to restaurant to create a burger you can only imagine in your dreams. Create your own or pick from the tried-and-true list of “burger experiments” such as the Burger of the Gods made with bleu cheese crumbles, candied balsamic onions and gorgonzola spread. Each burger comes with a choice of sides including the staple french fries, but feel free to try out the loaded mac du jour. Big kids are sure to love the tater tots and grilled cheese or let ’em try their hands at creating their very own burger experiment. Smaller appetites will enjoy classics off the kid’s menu like cheeseburgers, grilled cheese and classic mac and cheese. Lunchbox Lab also boasts a Shake Lab, a milkshake creation station featuring Snoqualmie Ice Cream. Stick with delicious ice cream and yummy add-ons or make it a boozie shake by adding a test tube of your favorite spirit! There are four cities in the Crystal River region: Crystal River, Homosassa, Inverness, and Floral City. We spent our time in Crystal River and Homosassa and found plenty to do

Imagine a stretch of Florida coast along the Gulf of Mexico filled with riverways, low-lying mangrove trees, crystal clear water, and wildlife. While it might not be as well traversed as parts of the panhandle or the white sandy shores a couple of hours south, this charming spot is filled with delightful fun and sights that are perfect for families looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the beach cities for which the sunshine state is so well known. My kids and I had the chance to visit Crystal River, FL, and we fell in love—not just with the manatees—but with the unique culture and activities that abound in this wild area.

Our Favorite Things to Do in Crystal River, FL

Watch a Mermaid Perform

Mermaid at The Mertailor's in Crystal River FL
Gabby Cullen

Outside the Crystal River city limits lies a magical realm where mermaids dwell. The Mertailor’s Mermaid Aquarium Encounter is a hidden gem. Located in an unassuming spot off the highway, you’ll enter the space filled with birds like Macaws and Cockatoos, a stingray touching tank (where my kids spent at least 30 minutes), a starfish and sea urchin discovery station and examples of the local spring habitats. The real star of the show is the mermaid tank, where, every hour or so, guests are treated to an underwater performance from a mermaid performer.

Swim with the Manatees

swimming with manatees in Kings Bay
Gabby Cullen

The natural springs in Citrus County (known as the Manatee Capital of the world, BTW), beckon to upwards of a thousand manatees in the winter months. In the summer, you’ll still find these gentle giants in the clear waters of Crystal River and Kings Bay, and several companies take you out to snorkel or kayak. We loved Hunter Springs Kayak. They are located in the heart of downtown and are a quick walk from the docks at Kings Bay Park. The captains are knowledgeable, and you’ll have a diving partner. They’ll show you the various springs and guide you if a manatee comes to check you out. And if you’re lucky, you might see dolphins!

You can also view the manatees from the boardwalks that line Three Sisters Springs (closed for construction until November 2023). For water access to the spring, launch your craft from any of the public docks in Kings Bay Park or Hunter Springs Park.

Hang Out in Hunter Springs Park

This lovely park is perfect for an afternoon with the kids. There’s a boardwalk for viewing manatees, a sandy beach and playground for kids, BBQ grills, a kayak launch, and plenty of grass for games and picnics.

Visit Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

Gabby Cullen

This is one of Florida’s most beloved state parks for a reason. The water is stunning, and the park meanders all along its shores. You can take a boat ride or a tram ride from one of the main entrances to get to the park, the underwater observatory in the spring itself allows visitors to see the resident manatees, a boardwalk that runs all through the park, and over Homosassa Springs which is a favorite spot for wild manatees, fresh and saltwater fish. There are plenty of animals to see, including panthers, a black bear, a bald eagle, a hippopotamus, and more. The animals can’t return to the wild, so they serve as educational ambassadors for the park. Grab an ice cream or cold drink from the snack shops or carts to beat the heat, enjoy the beauty of the wild surroundings, and remember your sunscreen!

Take an Air Boat Tour

Homosassa and Crystal River FL
Gabby Cullen

A highlight of our trip was taking an Air Boat Tour with Irish Dave of River Safaris. Tucked away in the town of Homosassa is Two Pop’s Sandwich Shop, where you can book a tour on a pontoon or airboat. Walk through the backyard to the river’s edge and be transported down the river to the coastline through quintessential Florida waterways that seem unnavigable except for those who know the terrain.

This is where the springs meet the sea, and Florida’s natural beauty is on display. This stretch of coastline is shallow, clear, and filled with mangrove islands that are a refuge for birds, fish, sharks, and other sea life. It’s a stunning area I didn’t even know existed until this tour. Irish Dave loves this land, and his knowledge of the river is unsurpassed. This experience is a must for anyone visiting Crystal River and Homosassa.

Our Favorite Restaurants in Crystal River, FL

The Crystal River seafood is legendary for a reason. Riverside restaurants will cook your catch, you’ll discover some of the freshest grouper you’ll ever have, and shrimp is everywhere on the menus. Oh, and the local coffee shop is a must.

Pick a Spot Near Monkey Island

After your boat tour, head down to the riverfront, where you’ll have your pick of fun restaurants with lots of outdoor dining. Crump’s Landing is a popular spot with live music, kids’ activities, a boat dock, and a beachfront, but the one with the best view of the famous Monkey Island, home to four wild spider monkeys, is Florida Cracker Monkey Bar. You can watch them frisk about while enjoying your meal.

Enjoy the Incredible Pizza at The Grill at Pepper Creek

This new dining spot is in the Visitor’s Center at Homassas Springs Wildlife Park. If you aren’t won over by the views, the pizza will do the trick. We ordered more than was good for us and insisted on taking the rest home—it was that good. The service is impeccable, and it’s the perfect way to start your visit to the park.

Check Out the Sunset at Waterfront Social

Everything is made from scratch at this charming spot on Kings Bay. With stunning views of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, we loved the coconut shrimp, the grilled salmon entree, and the clam chowder starter. There isn’t a bad seat on the patio, and it was hard to focus on anything but the incredible water views. We even peeked over the edge of the lawn to look for the manatees that swim by.

Indulge at Kane’s Cattle Co.

Even if you don’t want one of the impressive steak entrees, this restaurant in downtown Crystal River will have something you’ll love. We loved the Ahi tuna appetizer, the whole fish entree, and the hand-battered coconut shrimp.

Perk Up at Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters

There are four locations in the area, and we tried the one in Crystal River (located on Main Street, which is worth exploring on its own). Besides coffee, hot chocolate, and other beverages, you’ll find housemade savory breakfast sandwiches, sweet pastries like muffins and scones, and light lunch options like the Hampton BLT, the Salt & Sea Toast, and Cali Toast.

Where to Stay in Crystal River, FL

Kings Bay Lodge in Crystal River Florida
Gabby Cullen

While you can opt for a modern hotel like the Hampton Inn or the Holiday Inn Express, if you want to be close to the water and experience the vibes of Old Florida, check out King’s Bay Lodge. A place that’ll take you back to a lost era, it’s the only spot in Citrus County (and almost all of Florida) with a spring-fed swimming pool. There’s free boat docking for guests, a full kitchen setup that’ll help you save on food costs, outdoor pavilions, grills, and a lawn perfect for playing games. The Lodge is in the heart of Crystal River; you can walk to your kayak or manatee tour and various dining establishments.

If you want to splurge, consider booking a stay at Plantation Resort at Crystal River. The tempting lagoon-style pool, golf course, pickleball courts, and full adventure center will keep your crew busy. Rent a boat, go scalloping and diving, or enjoy one of the three on-site restaurants.

Get ready to cool off at the best splash pads and water parks that San Diego has to offer

San Diego is one of the best cities in the country for families to while away those cherished summer days. Sure, there are great watering holes and some of the most stunning beaches around, but the city also features an incredible variety of splash pads, water parks, and aquatic centers that will thrill even the pickiest kiddos. We’ve put together a list of the absolute must-sees, must-dos, and must-splash spots so be sure to add them to your summer itinerary stat.

Waterfront Park

Open since 2014, Waterfront Park is the most significant recreational open space in downtown San Diego and a super special spot to hit up with your brood, especially during the toasty summer months. This 12-acre park is just a stone’s throw from the bay and is tailor made for a fun-filled family day with cool features like a large children’s play zone with great structures to climb and explore, as well as a giant interactive fountain that extends the length of green and has oodles of jets to spray littles. The fountain floor is rough and grippy so kids can romp around safely without worry of slipping.

Insider’s Tip: There’s also an expansive grassy area right by the fountain where you can lay towels, have picnics, and enjoy the breathtaking waterfront views. Additionally, if you you’d like to have a birthday party there, the picnic area near the children’s playground can be reserved.

The splash pad at the Poway Community Swim Center is always a summer fave for families. With a wide selection of geysers, overhead buckets, a water tunnel and more, the only problem you’ll have is getting kiddos to leave at the end of the day.

We also recommend checking out Inflatable Days at the swim center as well. Every Fri. from June 16 – Aug. 4, the pool features gigantic inflatables like the Magneetor or Swing & Slide for everyone to enjoy! Whether your kiddos love the thrill of getting drenched by a bucket of water or prefer to whoop it up in the spray zone, this splash pad is tons of fun. Even more, there’s a 13-station exercise course if you want to squeeze in a quick workout, as well as rentable picnic areas and a campground if you want to make a whole night of it.

Thanks to Seattle’s lineup of accessible fishing holes, going fishing with the family is surprisingly easy, even for beginners

One of the benefits of raising a family in Seattle is the accessibility to the Sound and, with it, all things water-related. Tidepooling is as simple as heading to a nearby beach on a sunny day, and you can find great spots to go kayaking no matter where you live.

It’s just as easy to go fishing. In fact, it’s especially easy to go fishing with kids because, in Seattle, children can fish without a license* (that makes it easy on the wallet, too!). The only question is: beach, pier, or boat? If you’re ready to get your little ones hooked on this time-honored family outing, check out the most popular kid-friendly fishing spots in the area. An insider tip for beginners: If your pint-sized anglers are completely new to the sport (or you are as well), you might want to opt for one of the local fishing holes that charge a small fee—they usually have experts who’d be happy to show you the ropes. Ready to hook, line, and sinker? Here’s where to bring your family of fishers.

Reverend Murphy Fishing Pier

You’ll enjoy a lovely view from this kid-friendly fishing spot in Seward Park on Lake Washington, especially if the mountain is out. Après fishing, enjoy a stroll through Seward Park, swing on the zip line, play on the playground equipment, or go for a swim at the swimming beach. Don’t forget to bring an extra layer. This fishing spot can get a bit windy.

Jim’s U Fish at Old McDebbie’s Farm

The fish are jumping at Jim’s U Fish. With two freshwater ponds stocked with rainbow trout, the fish here are surprisingly easy to catch—so younger kids think it’s lots of fun. No fishing license is required, and they will clean and bag your fish for a minimal charge ($0.50). Bring your own gear or rent from them ($3/pole). But what about the kids in your family who aren’t interested in fishing? No problem. Enjoy all that Old McDebbie’s 20-plus acre farm has to offer—it’s got exotic animals, pony rides, a petting zoo, playgrounds, and more. Pack your own lunch to enjoy at one of several picnic spots for a full day of fun with the fam.

Insider Tip: No catch-and-release is allowed here. It costs $6 per fish, and expect a $25 fee for each fish thrown back. Also: there’s an admission cost to enjoy the property amenities and go fishing.

Lincoln Park

Watch ferries crisscross the Sound as you fish from the driftwood-strewn beach at Lincoln Park. Popular with families, Lincoln Park boasts great salmon fishing during the summer months, as well as plenty of other activities (think playgrounds, hiking trails, ballfields, zip lines, and even an outdoor, heated saltwater pool). Enjoy the inclusive and accessible play elements, including a small alcove for sensory sensitive children. But be prepared: Lincoln Park can get quite busy, especially during the bi-annual “pink” salmon run.

Belvoir Place

Nestled on the shores of Union Bay, you’ll find Belvoir Place, a 400-foot dock that’s perfect fishing for kids. This hidden gem in Seattle’s Laurelhurst neighborhood is not usually busy, so it’s a calm spot for beginners. Kids can fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass, yellow perch, sablefish, black crappie, and more. Psst… one of the reasons that this spot is among Seattle’s best-kept secrets is probably because it’s quite hard to find—the dock is squeezed between two private houses.

Angle Lake

Apart from the occasional airliner passing overhead, Angle Lake is a great escape from the city. At this L-shaped, 10-acre urban park, you will find a big fishing pier, sandy beach, and grassy area as well as a playground, picnic area, and swimming beach to pass the time when the fish aren’t biting. During the summer months, silver trout called kokanee are plentiful, but you can also reel in largemouth bass, black crappie, rock bass, yellow perch, and, if you’re lucky, a rainbow trout.

Redondo Beach Pier

Countless children have memories of catching their first fish at Redondo Pier. Kids fishing for salmon, sole, and perch will be in luck at this popular spot south of Seattle. In addition to the large fishing pier, there’s a bait shop at the top. After you’ve gotten your fill, take a stroll along the boardwalk or visit the Marine Science and Technology (MAST) Aquarium for free to see what got away. The aquarium is open to the public on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and is home to over 250 species of sea life with two large touch tanks.

Green Lake

For little anglers in North Seattle, Green Lake is stocked full of rainbow and brown trout just waiting to be caught. Kids can also catch channel catfish, carp and pumpkinseed sunfish. With excellent shoreline access and fishing piers, you can drop your line anywhere around the lake and see what will nibble on your line. Of course, Green Lake also offers tons of other activities if the fish are not biting, including a three-mile paved trail, boat rentals, a play area, a wading pool, and lots of tasty nearby eateries and coffeeshops.

Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park

There’s so much to do at this Lake Washington park, including kid-friendly fishing from the pier. Hang out at the fishing pier or stroller along the paved shoreside walking trails. But don’t worry if you don’t catch any fish, you can always catch a tasty cod ‘n’ chips from Ivars Seafood Bar, located right by the fishing pier or grab a burger from Kidd Valley. No dogs are allowed at Coulon Beach, so leave Fido at home.

The Old Fishing Hole

The Old Fishing Hole, adjacent to the Green River Trail, is a favorite of young fishers for generations, catering to anglers aged 14 years and younger. The best part? It’s stocked with 1,500 trout every year. So grab yourself a spot on the grassy shore, bait your hook and reel ’em in! While there, take a walk along the loop trail. It’s easyit’s only .25-miles long. Also, check out the “Cedar and Salmon” totem pole carved by artist David Boxley.

Gold Creek Trout Farm

This hatchery can be loads of fishy fun for amateur anglers, but you might find the fish are a little too easy to catch (sometimes they’re practically jumping on to your line). They offer everything you need for a great first-time-fishing experience. The poles, bait, buckets, nets, and helpful staff are all included and no fishing license is required, although outside poles are not allowed. No reservations are needed, and pricing is based on the size of the fish you catch. They will even clean the fish if you like ($0.50 per fish). There’s no catch-and-release here, so plan to bring your fish home.

Insider Tip: Gold Creek Trout Farm is a state-certified food fish supplier, and their ponds are filled with spring water so the fish have a very fresh taste.

Pine Lake Park

The young Eastside anglers’ not-so-secret spot, Pine Lake, is perfect for fishing with kids. The catch rate is highest early in the season, but also consider stopping by in the fall when fish have had all summer to grow and then become active around the lake in the cooler temperatures. Here, you can reel in rainbow trout, largemouth bass, brown bullhead, yellow perch, and pumpkinseed sunfish from the fishing pier. Or bring your boat and try catching a big one out in the lake. There is ample shoreline and a large fishing pier at the public park. There is a boat ramp, but water craft are restricted to car-toppers and float tubes; outboard motors are prohibited.

Edmonds Marina Fishing Pier

With the incredible views of Puget Sound, the ferries coming and going and the seasoned fishers lined up along the railing, the Edmonds Marina Fishing Pier has lots to offer. Kids can watch the masters show them how it’s done and maybe even offer a little advice, if you ask nicely. The dock is walking distance from local shops and restaurants so you can grab a bite once you’ve caught your quota.

Golden Gardens Park

It would be difficult to find a more beautiful spot to fish than Golden Gardens. Even if the fish aren’t biting, the view of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains is spectacular. Located in Ballard, this park also features two wetlands, a short loop trail and a children’s play area and lots of sandy beaches if you decide to hang up the poles and build a sandcastle instead.

*Editor’s Note: As previously stated, children 14 years old and under do not need a fishing license to fish in the state of Washington. However, they do need to keep and fill out a catch record card if they are fishing for salmon, halibut, sturgeon, steelhead, or Puget Sound Dungeness crab. You can register for one online or call the Fish Program Customer Service line at 360-902-2700 for more information. All catch record cards must be returned to the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife by the appropriate deadline, even if you didn’t catch anything.
