All Seasons, one of the largest U-pick apples orchards in northern Illinois, has been operating since 1993. In addition to over 15,000 apple trees across two orchards, their Barnyard includes more than 30 different activities for the family including a corn maze, petting zoo, pedal carts, zip line swings, a jumping pillow, a cow train, and more. It is quite easy to spend an entire day. After a wagon ride into the orchards to fill your bags with your perfect apple finds, and before or after playing in the Barnyard, visit their Country Kitchen, Country Concessions, or Dessert Bar for delicious food and seasonal treats including apple cider slushies and cider donut sundaes.

Apple Holler

There’s no shortage of apples at this 78-acre Wisconsin standout with 30,000 trees bearing more than 30 varieties. You’ll also find juicy pears to pick and a mighty selection of pumpkins to ready your home for fall. Sure to bring a smile to kids’ faces is the outdoor amusement area with gentle ponies to ride: also, chickens, turkeys, geese and ducks, a small bunny village in Bunnyville, and goats that cross overhead on the “Golden Goat Bridge.” You’ll also find mazes, tractor-pulled train and wagon rides, gemstone mining, and pedal carts. Down-home goodness can be found in the Old Fashioned Farm Store, Bakery, & Gift Shop, that’s filled to the brim with homemade pies, apple cider donuts, jams, butters, salsa, candies, crafts, and a varied selection of Wisconsin wines and cheeses—because no trip to Wisconsin is complete without cheese.

The search for the perfect apple to pick, bake, juice, slice, or nibble couldn’t be easier at this orchard near Chicago with 40 tree-blanketed acres comprised of more than 30 varieties. While apples are the core of this northwest Indiana fruit-bearing destination, the activities are as plentiful as the apple selection. A ride aboard a tractor not only takes you to the orchard but it swings by the pumpkin patch so you can stock up on pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, hay, and fall flowers. Orchard-goers who are up for getting a little lost can navigate their way through a themed corn maze. Visit the Kids Farm (extra fee) to find a wide variety of animals to feed, Peter The Pumpkin Eating Dinosaur, pedal tractors waiting to plow imaginary fields, and a toddler-sized corn maze to tackle. Be sure to leave enough time to ride the “Moo Choo” (cars made out of cow-inspired barrels pulled by a tractor) because it’s a highlight of the orchard—second only to the 10,000 apple- and pumpkin-spiced donuts baked fresh daily.

This is a great place to unwind and enjoy a low-key experience that’s easy, fun, and affordable without the added expense of play areas, food, and tractor rides. Branches are low enough for kids to reach, but poles with pouches are available when you spot that prime apple at the tippy-top of the tree. Parking and admission are free, bringing your own wagon is welcomed, and cameras to capture the giggles is an absolute must.

Jonamac Orchard

This family-owned and -operated business has grown since its beginning 30 years ago to include 105 acres dotted with more than 10,000 trees sprouting dozens of apple varieties. In addition to the solid selection of apples to pick near Chicago, the Tiny Town Play Area draws kids in with a giant jumping pillow, slides, duck races, straw bale pile, pedal trikes, rope spider web, tractor-driven barrel rides, apple shooting cannon, and petting zoo. Entrance to the play area is free on weekdays, with some exceptions, but there is a charge on weekends. Satisfy rumbling tummies in the Country Store and Bakery with apple cider donuts, fresh-baked bread and pies, caramel apples, delicious fudge, and apple pizzas.

Kuipers Family Farm

Since their start in 1998 as a pumpkin farm, Kuipers has grown to a 230-acre apple-growing powerhouse near Chicago committed to showing families kid-powered fun focused on running, climbing, adventure, and fresh air. Visitors pay admission to enjoy a delightful hayride to the orchard where they pick 1/4 peck of apples. For an additional charge, kids can tire themselves out with the corn maze, tractor tire mountain, haunted forest suitable for tiny tots, humungous slide, pony rides, giant bouncy pillow, climbing web, and much more. For a squealing good time, be sure to get a front-row view of the pig races that occur every hour on the weekends. Before you hop in the car for the inevitable nap time that occurs after that much excitement, mosey into the Orchard Shop and Bakery for their crave-worthy homemade apple cider donuts, caramel apples, fudge, and freshly squeezed apple cider.

Royal Oak Farm

Spanning 120 acres with 17,000 apple trees containing 30 varieties of apples, Royal Oak Farm is a great place to spend a day. Once you’ve picked your fill of apples, saunter over to the entertainment area to take a spin on the carousel, ride the train, or buy a ticket for the hayride orchard tour on Saturdays and Sundays. Visit the snack shop for a hot cup of cider or coffee, and a delicious apple cider donut, and watch from a picnic table as your kids play upon the John Deer tractor, fire engine, Noah’s Ark, and full-sized dollhouse in the play area.

The Best Outdoor Dining in Los Angeles with Kids

1. Back on the Beach Cafe

Nothing beats breathtaking views of the ocean, pier, and Catalina Island—that’s why Back on the Beach Café is one of our go-tos when looking for family-friendly, outdoor dining. With tables set right on the beach, littles can wiggle their toes in the sand while enjoying a kids’ menu filled with favorites like burgers, hot dogs, veggie dogs, penne pasta, and chicken tenders. Parents will especially love the fish tacos, chicken apple salad, and chicken salad sandwich, but everything here is delicious.

Reservations are accepted at least one day in advance via telephone or in person and same-day reservations are not allowed. You can request to wait for an outdoor table upon your arrival, but know that a spot in the sand is prime real estate so you should expect a wait on weekends, summer days, and holidays.

Insider Tip: Check the seasonal pool schedule for historic Annenberg Community Beach House before you go. Located just steps away from Back on the Beach, the pool is open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Don’t feel like swimming? The splash pad and beach playground are fun as well and are open to the public year round.

2. The Proud Bird Food Bazaar

If you have pint-sized plane fanatics at home, The Proud Bird Food Bazaar should be top of your list. Located alongside the airport runway, this space originally opened in 1967 as a salute to aviation but has since become a unique food hall that features six culinary kitchens. Open for lunch and dinner, you can order food at the station of your choice, then grab a seat indoors or head outside to the large patio for some prime plane peeping as they approach LAX for a landing. There’s also a great playground on site as well as a lovely firepit to sit beside in the evenings. Food options include everything from BBQ and burgers to Asian food and chicken and waffles. Littles have plenty of space to run around and work off some energy, while you watch from the patio and take a much-needed break—roger that.

3. The Draycott

When you fancy a bit fancier meal, but still want something family friendly, The Draycott at Palisades Village is just the ticket. Absolutely stunning in its décor, the covered patio of this California-inspired brasserie with a British twist makes you feel as though you’ve stepped into an enchanted forest with rows of beautiful flowers draped from the ceiling. The restaurant features brunch, lunch, dinner and a fantastic kids’ menu. WeHo really knows how to revive classic dining spots that are beloved by the LA community—one of which is Tail O’ The Pup. This historic hot dog stand (originally founded in 1946) features the iconic hot dog shaped stand in front with two brightly colored patios behind it. 5. Irv's Burgers

We told you WeHo is a pro at retro restaurant revivals. Irv’s Burgers is case and point. The iconic burger joint originally opened 76 years ago and has endured many openings and closings over the years, but it was recently brought back to life in WeHo. Much to the delight of Angelenos, Irv’s is still serving up incredible burgers and amazing service from co-owner Sonia Hong who is known for her friendly smile and her doodles on customer’s plates and takeout bags. The Weho location features a small space for indoor seating and lots of sidewalk tables outside—perfect for people watching. Also, Irv’s just opened a second location in Miracle Mile at the beginning of March and is set to open a third outpost in Malibu this summer.

6. John's Garden

With a prime location (and free parking) at Malibu Country Mart, John’s Garden is the lovely spot to bring kiddos for lunch. It’s steps away from the shopping area’s amazing playground and features outdoor seating at picnic tables. But you really wanna know about the food, right? 8. Spoke Bicycle Cafe

Spoke Bicycle Café is the first business of its kind to set up a permanent location along the LA River Bike Path in Frogtown. This mostly outdoor spot is perfect for large groups and families who’d like to take advantage of some swell biking before or after their meal. The café features a variety of toasts, breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, bowls, coffee drinks and a kids’ menu. There is also a full-service bike shop on site so if your bicycle needs a little tune-up while you eat, you’ve come to the right place. Bicycle rentals are also available on a walk-in basis.

9. Golden Road Brewing Company

Home to LA’s largest brewery, Golden Road Brewing Company’s Atwater Village Brewpub is a festive place to spend an afternoon. With a family-friendly environment and a large patio in front filled with yard games and occasional live music, it’s a great way to unwind with kids in tow. In addition to some of the tastiest brews in town, the food menu can also hold its own. 10. Cafe on 27

Okay, so it's not exactly in the "heart of LA,” but if you happen to be in Topanga Canyon, this spot is a definite must with the kiddos for lunch. Café on 27 makes you feel as though you’re dining in the dreamiest treehouse ever perched above the hills. With a multi-level patio built into the hillside and fab food to boot, this is an experience to remember. Fugetsu-Do

Apart from Fugetsu-Do's beautiful confections, it boasts quite possibly the most incredible immigrant origin story of any candy shop in town. The Kito family-run business opened in 1903 and ran until the World War II-era Executive Order sent Japanese-Americans to internment camps in 1942. The Kitos were sent to a camp in Wyoming, where the owner made mochi for his fellow detainees with their donated sugar rations. As soon as they were released, the Kitos returned to their original location on First St. and worked to buy back their shop and baking machinery, sleeping in a temple in the interim. Today, nearly 120 years later, the store is run by his son, 3rd generation master wagashi confectioner Brian Kito!

Fugetsu-Do has a mochi (rice cake candy) or a manju (sweet bean-filled rice cake candy) for every palate: plum-shaped steamed mochi, rainbow-decorated dango, and strawberry-flavored mochi with peanut butter filling, among others. And yes—for the Valentine purists, there is even a chocolate-flavored mochi filled with chocolate ganache!

Good to Know: You can sample the many types of mochi and manju at their Little Tokyo store daily, find them in limited quantities at local markets (Marukai, Mitsuwa, Nijiya, Tokyo Central, Tokyo Fish Market, and Uwajimayaor) or order online from japansuper.com.

Come out for a full day of fun at this Christmas tree farm near Dallas. Choose and cut your own or pick out pre-cut varieties like Fraser Fir, White Pine, Black Hills, and Spruce. Don't miss their Christmas Carnival that starts at noon on Nov. 25-27 to get you in the holiday spirit with rides, light decorations, a corn maze, and photo opportunities. Plan your visit accordingly so that you can visit with Santa, ride the amusement park rides, and stop at Animal Town.

2. Sunset Hill Tree Farm

If you are looking for a cut-your-own tree experience, this is the spot for you. The farm has Virginia Pines available for u-cut starting the weekend after Thanksgiving. 6. Haynie's Green Acres Farm

Unfortunately, the fields for sawing down your own Christmas tree at this farm near Dallas are closed because of this year's drought, but you can still find pre-cut northern Fraser Firs and their signature colorful flocked firs. Santa will visit from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 26 to 27 and Dec. 3 to 4.

7. Flower Mound Christmas Trees

You may have visited this spot to pick your pumpkin but it transforms into your "Christmas in the Country" tree spot for the holiday. They offer thousands of pre-cut Christmas trees of seven different varieties, both natural and flocked, for you and your family to choose from. Pick from Douglas Fir, Fraser Fir, Grand Fir, Noble Fir, and Nordmann Fir. They even have the hard-to-find 16 foot trees for sale. Check their Facebook page for 2022 updates.

Just 30 minutes west of Fort Worth, this tree farm offers several native varieties for you to cut down including Arizona Cypress, Leyland Cypress, and Fraser Fir. When you're done, or while you're waiting, hop on the back of the tractor for a holiday hayride, shop the artisan holiday market or sit back and relax while sipping hot cocoa and eating delicious homemade holiday cookies.
