Uneeda Burger

If burgers are your thing, Uneeda Burger. (See what they did there?) The self-described "casual, roadside-style burger shack,” is the perfect place for grown-ups and kids to get their burger fix. The all-weather patio blends seamlessly into the dining room; both provide picnic table seating to enjoy hefty burgers and delicious hand-cut fries. And we know your kids won't be able to resist the Apple Cider Malt Shake, even if they're bundled up. Did we mention all shakes are hand-dipped and made with Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream in flavors like salted caramel, blackberry, strawberry, chocolate, and oreo? A wide variety of microbrews, artisan sodas, and wines are also on tap.

Insider tip: Although they don’t have a kids' menu, Uneeda’s classic no-frills burger is just $5, and kids can also order soup, hot dogs, or grilled cheese.

The Art Institute of Chicago (ARTIC) has way more than Renoir, Picasso, Monet and Van Gogh paintings to pique a mini art aficionado’s interest. Don’t be deterred by the quiet library-like atmosphere, read on to learn about kid-appropriate spaces that encourage little ones to discover, explore and, believe it or not, make some rowdy noise.

photo: Vernaccia via Yelp

Let’s Start with Some Fun Facts
The two massive, iconic bronze lions that flank the ARTIC Michigan Ave. entrance were made in 1893 and given as a gift from Mrs. Henry Field (Henry Field was the younger brother of department store magnate Marshall Field). And, they have some pretty epic names: In an Attitude of Defiance and On the Prowl.

The ARTIC has almost 300,000 works of art spread out over nearly a million square feet! That’s a lot of feet for little feet to walk, so we’ll help you break down the must-sees for littles.

AIC Tiny Rooms
photo: Wendy Altschuler

What to See
The number one exhibit on our list is the Thorne Miniature Rooms. Peek in on 68 unnervingly realistic little rooms from different periods in European and American history, filled with little furniture and little lights and little fixtures—everything is little! There are many kid-friendly activities in this area, including a short tour that links to a book series about the Thorne Miniature Rooms.

The Arms, Armor, Medieval and Renaissance exhibit is also a family must-see. Where else can kids marvel at an authentic full suit of armor, with weapon in hand, perched on top of a fully decked out horse in metal armor? Children can walk by a massive collection of medieval art, metalwork, stained glass, jewelry, cannons and steel as far as the eye can see.

The ARTIC is known for its impressionism and post-impressionism art. They have one of the largest collections of late-nineteenth-century French art in the world.

photo: Art Institute of Chicago

The Ryan Learning Center, which hosts regular family activities is currently under construction to become an even more accessible, inclusive and creative space for all audiences to enjoy. Once it’s back up and running, you’ll find drop-in art classes with take-home projects that are thematically connected to artwork in the museum. Kids can also take part in age-appropriate programs and workshops.

The Family Room has toys, books and games that teach children about the ARTIC collection. On the weekend and for special events, engaging craft projects are offered. Across the hall from the Family Room, there are special exhibitions that change regularly, which encourage kids to learn, play and investigate.

photo: Art Institute of Chicago

Nibbles and Thirst Quenchers
The Museum Café, located on the lower level, has a full kid’s menu with kid-favorites. Self-service dining is available from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

In addition to the Museum Café, ARTIC offers a wide range of options, from casual to fine dining. If it’s nice outside, check out McKinlock Court. You might even get lucky and find live music on summer evenings. Bonus: Members of the museum receive a 10% discount in all ARTIC restaurants.

AIC Strollers
photo: Wendy Altschuler

Family Activities to Jot Down
On the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m., Picture This invites the youngest visitors to immerse themselves in picture books that correlate to and help them appreciate the works of art in the galleries.

For kids that want to explore their creative side, ARTIC provides the supplies for family-friendly sketching in galleries on select Saturday and Sundays.

It’s All in the Details
Strollers are allowed in the galleries and there is stroller parking outside the Ryan Learning Center Family Room. Strollers are not allowed in the Thorne Miniature Rooms. Take note that some of the elevators are not conveniently located, which requires a bit of navigating in and out of galleries to get where you’re going. There are, however, plenty of stewards that can direct you. For personalized tours of the collections, download the free Art Institute Tours app, available for Apple and Android devices.

Start your adventure at home with JourneyMaker, an innovative digital interactive kids can use to create their own one-of-a-kind adventure with works of art from the Art Institute’s collection.

The museum is usually busiest right when they open at 10:30 until after noon.  A less crowded time to enjoy the art with your kiddos would be around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m.  Also, the Modern Wing entrance on Monroe Street is often much less crowded than the Michigan Avenue entrance—which means shorter lines.

AIC Kids Playing

The Bottom Dollar
The best part about bringing your kids to ARTIC? Free admission for all children ages 14 & under and for Chicago teens ages 14-17. Chicago adult residents will pay $20 and Illinois adult residents pay $22. Or, you can pop in on a Wednesday evening from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. for free admission.

Parakeet Cafe

A little birdie told us to fly straight to Parakeet Cafe for delicious coffee and delectable eats, and we're so glad we did! The cheery space features vibrant, neon and hand-painted parakeet print wallpaper that will instantly bring a smile to your face. But that's just the beginning of all there is to chirp about. Parakeet Cafe's coffee drinks, comprised of ethically sourced beans, house-made syrups and alternative milks, pair beautifully with their healthy, creative menu. They believe "indulging in your health should be just that: indulgent. Every item on the menu is full of lush, organic ingredients, bright flavor, interesting textures and beautiful color."

We love the turmeric latte, an enticing blend of turmeric, ginger, vanilla, cardamom, honey and almond milk, paired with their cacao waffle served with coconut yogurt, organic fresh berries, banana, chia, cinnamon and coconut sugar. Additionally, you'll find something for everyone's taste from their extensive menu of savory and sweet breakfast and lunch items ranging from decadently topped toasts and robust salads to comforting soups and hearty breakfast entrees served all day. Their pastry case is straight out of heaven, with plenty of vegan and gluten free options to choose from.

Hawthorn Coffee

Hawthorn Coffee

Hawthorn Coffee is as family-minded as a coffee house can get. Owned by a father/son duo, Kevin and Dylan, Dylan's young sons often frequent the shop. The clientele consists of many parents with kids as well as expecting parents. Kevin says, "Part of the reason why is that we believe in welcoming everyone, and that means everyone. Our philosophy is that kids can do no wrong, so we let them have the run of the shop. And since kids generally make noise, we let them do that, too. And that, in turn, makes parents very relaxed." In addition to this fantastic, inclusive atmosphere, Hawthorn Coffee means business when it comes to the perfect cup of joe. They serve Cat & Cloud of Santa Cruz, CA, Dapper&Wise Coffee Roasters of Beaverton, WA and Arcade Coffee Roasters of Riverside, CA, in their shop because of their "commitment to that sweet balance, blend, and consistency of deliciousness." Tucked away in east Poway, The King’s Craft Coffee (TKC), was founded by local dad and former defensive lineman for the San Diego Chargers, Cory Withrow. Poway’s first specialty coffee shop, these guys serve up single origin brews sourced from small holder organic farms. TKC features an outdoor seating area for kiddos to burn off some energy and plenty of seating for tired parents. Thinking about introducing your kids to a cruise? Royal Caribbean International’s highly anticipated private island in The Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay, is finally open and bursting with one-of-a-kind experiences. We recently had the opportunity to visit the island—a first in the cruise line’s new Perfect Island Day Collection—and came back with plenty to report. If you’re considering a cruise soon or just want to know what this epic island has to offer, keep reading!

A Private Island Experience Like No Other

In an effort to push the envelope in cruise line experiences and provide a “perfect” destination for every type of traveler, Royal Caribbean International spent the last year and $250 million transforming their private island in The Bahamas into an impressive 125-acre beach haven for thrill seekers and beach chillers alike. From ginormous water slides and wave pools, to thrilling zip lines and helium balloon rides, to pristine white-sand beaches and crystal-clear tropical water, guests can now customize their own perfect beach day at CocoCay Island.

Go to Extreme Heights at the Thrill Waterpark

Located in the heart of Perfect Day at CocoCay, you’ll find the Thrill Waterpark. If you’ve got a crew of adrenaline junkies, this impressive waterpark boasts two brag-worthy towers with 13 water slides. When you arrive, make your way to the top of Daredevil’s Tower and take the plunge down Daredevil’s Peak. This impressive, 135-feet-tall water slide comes with serious bragging rights—it’s the tallest water slide in North America! Once you’ve got your feet wet and your adrenaline pumping, you’ll want to try the Dueling Demons, two drop slides that will take you from a vertical position, down a tube slide and to the bottom in a matter of seconds. For riders who want to ease into the “big” slides, Daredevil’s Tower also offers twin open flume slides, a high-speed fully vertical slide and a massive coiling tube slide.

After conquering the slides at Daredevil’s Tower, head over to Splash Summit, the waterpark’s second tower, and tackle the even more epic action: multi-rider slides, a zero gravity slide and more. No trip to the waterpark would be complete without riding the waves at the the largest wave pool in the Caribbean! You’ll also find an obstacle course, rock climbing wall and two rope swings in the Adventure Pool.

Play at the Biggest Aqua Park at Sea

For little water bugs looking to get in on the waterpark action, Splashaway Bay offers the largest aqua park at sea. Kids will find an array of playful fountains, sprinklers and geysers along with two massive drench buckets and five water slides, including three new racers. If your tots are looking for even more excitement, just a stone’s throw away from Splashaway Bay are the swashbuckling thrills of Captain Jill’s Galleon. This interactive pirate ship comes with three dry slides, 16 water cannons, rope features and a splash pad. The best part? These attractions are both complimentary, so you don’t need to purchase a Thrill Waterpark pass to enjoy them.

Chill at the Largest Freshwater Pool in the Caribbean

In addition to water slides, splash pads and wave pools, Perfect Day at CocoCay offers the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean. Head over to Oasis Lagoon and take advantage of the pool’s three distinct coves, each with its own vibe and underwater sound system. With features like beach-entry and a swim-up bar, you might not ever want to get out. If you do, consider treating your crew to a little R&R in one of the private cabanas, complete with cabana attendants.

Go Up, Up & Away

Perfect Day at CocoCay is all about creating lasting memories through extreme experiences. Proof positive? The helium balloon ride, Up, Up and Away. Hop on board this signature attraction and get ready to take in the breathtaking views of CocoCay Island and the pristine blue waters of The Bahamas as you soar 450 feet in the air. Psst…Up, Up and Away provides the highest vantage point in the Caribbean!

Take a High-Flying Ride Across the Island

If you’re looking for another way to get that bird’s eye view of the island, plan to take a ride on the island’s speedy zip line. The 1,600-foot-long zip line course crisscrosses across the island, taking you from the arrival’s plaza, over the wave pool and Adventure Pool and across the harbor. All riders need to wear closed toes shoes, so don’t leave the boat without them.

Plan to Spend Some Time Chilling at the Beach

Perfect Day at CocoCay is not only about thrills. The extreme makeover brought a revamp of the island’s “chill” zones which makes the destination even more attractive to families. Chill Island offers pristine, crystal clear tropical waters and powder-like white sand beaches perfect for little feet. Grab a bite to eat at the Chill Grill, the largest dining venue on the island, and then relax under one of the beach umbrellas.

Psst…you can find all your beach day faves on South Beach, including volleyball, beachside basketball, soccer and paddle boarding as well as snorkeling and jet ski excursions.

More to Come!

In December 2019, Perfect Day at CocoCay will offer a luxury expansion to the island. With the addition of the Coco Beach Club, guests will have the opportunity to experience the very first overwater cabanas in The Bahamas—each with their own private water slide, overwater hammock, shower and dedicated attendant. If that doesn’t sound dreamy enough, the Club will also offer a 2,600 foot beachfront infinity pool and an exclusive Mediterranean dining venue.

Insider Tips & Tricks

1. If you purchase a Royal Caribbean drink package or deluxe beverage package on your cruise, you can use the package benefits while at Perfect Day at CocoCay. Souvenir cup drinks or drinks served in coconuts or pineapples are not included.

2. Your Voom internet package will work at Perfect Day at CocoCay with WiFi coverage extending across the island.

3. If you plan to ride Daredevil’s Peak and/or The Slingshot, go when you first arrive. The lines get long around lunchtime (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) and in the late afternoon, after 3 p.m.

4. There is a secret menu item at the Snack Shack inside the Thrill Waterpark. Ask for a chicken parmigiana sandwich and you’ll get a cross between the crispy chicken sandwich, mozzarella sticks and marinara sauce.

5. If you plan to go to the Thrill Waterpark, pre-purchase your tickets before your cruise and save some money.

6. If your crew is tuckered out after a day of slipping and sliding or you’ve got a lot gear to go to and from the ship, complimentary trams run all over the island and on and off the pier.

7. Make your own DIY ice cream sandwiches! Self-service soft service ice cream machines can be found at Perfect Day at CocoCay along with giant chocolate chip cookies. Head to one of the snack bars to pick up two cookies and then beeline it over to the soft serve machines and combine the two. You can thank us later!

Choosing the Perfect Ship

Families can visit Perfect Day at CocoCay by booking a cruise on one of Royal Caribbean’s 11 ships. Short Caribbean escapes are offered onboard the Mariner of the Seas and Navigator of the Seas and longer sailings are offered onboard the Oasis Class ships, including Allure, Harmony and Symphony of the Seas. If you’re sailing from the Northeast, there are also plenty of options onboard the Grandeur, Adventure and Anthem of the Seas.

If you’ve got a crew of first-time cruisers, we highly recommend a three-night Perfect Day at CocoCay weekend cruise onboard the Navigator of the Seas. This ah-mazing ship just received a $115 million remodel and not only offers two first-of-its kind onboard water slides (The Blaster which is the longest aqua coaster at sea and Riptide which is the industry’s only headfirst onboard mat racer water slide), but a rock climbing wall, sports court, surf simulator machine, mini golf course and re-imagined Caribbean resort-style poolscape and splash pad. Other new additions include the first standalone blow-dry bar at sea, a three-level signature bar with rooftop deck, a redesigned teen space, laser tag and escape room, plus several new dining options, including Johnny Rockets Express, El Loco Fresh, Hooked Seafood and Jaime’s Italian.

For a full list of sailings, visit royalcaribbean.com/cococay-cruises and be sure to stay tuned for more additional Perfect Day Island Collection destinations in Asia, Australia and the Caribbean.

Rates start at $303 per person.

20 Incredible Vacations You Haven’t Taken Yet

The general consensus is once kids hit about 3rd grade, with words like Common Core buzzing about, parents are maxed out on the know-how for assisting with homework. Embarrassing as that may be, The House in Glencoe has set out to introduce families to a brand new, parent-free approach to tutoring. This student-focused, lounge concept gives kids the educational assist they need, while also addressing their social-emotional need for peer connection. Read on to learn how this could be the homework frustration antidote your family never knew they needed.

The Basic Concept
Employing knowledge gained from their successful Chicago Academic tutoring center, Chicago natives and co-parents of four, Gil and Carrie Gibori, are looking to disrupt the traditional tutoring model. Starting right here in Glencoe, they are setting a trend the industry will very soon follow. The House is a membership-based, education lounge with 7-day drop-in tutoring and pre-scheduled private tutoring in a trendy, urban setting that includes peer-to-peer brainstorming booths, quiet rooms, cozy corners, swings, couches, private tutoring rooms and more. Their ultimate goal is to provide a positive hangout environment that feels like an extension of home, while minimizing the stress of homework time for your family.

Target Age for The House
The House has a strict no-parents policy. They’ve found that adhering to this protocol enables kids to authentically be themselves, engage in social-study and de-stress, without mom and dad helicoptering. The typical age range of a member is 6th grade through high school.

Subjects Covered by Tutors
You name it, if it’s taught in local schools, they tutor it using Chicago Academic’s proven methods and instructors. The House tutors are all Masters-level and above with expertise in a variety of subject areas. Your kids will think they’re cool, too. . . think champion, tattoo-sleeved surfers with PhDs. And, they’ve even been known to spin some pretty sweet beats as DJs when the need arises. While The House opens at 3 p.m. on school days, tutors typically punch the clock around 4:30 p.m., unless you have a private session booked prior to that. They’ve found kids like that initial bit of after-school time to decompress and catch up with pals without the tutors lingering about.

Along with subject-based tutoring, The House can also prepare kids for ACTs, SATs and AP test prep.

Types of Homework and Social Spaces Inside The House
Recent studies have show students perform better when they’re given flexibility within their workspace. This means the olden days of the uncomfortable molded metal desks, with a chair attached to a table that wraps around the student, are thankfully out the door. Many local schools are adopting a flexible concept that introduces soft surfaces, adjustable chairs, tables of varying heights and more. The House was designed with this new direction in mind, so you’ll find sofas, hammock chairs, tables that encourage collaboration, rolling chairs that are comfortable and adjustable, bean bags, and bleacher-style seating with cushions and pillows. Your student can decide which area fits their mood and study needs.

Private Tutoring Setup
The House has a basement with glass-walled rooms that offer privacy for one-on-one tutoring sessions. The House members can utilize roaming tutors to help with quick 10-minute questions, but anything beyond that would be handled with a private session. This can be done ahead of time, or on-the-spot using The House’s app. If your student is working on an assignment and finds themselves stuck, they can launch the app and lineup the assistance needed. The basement is kept locked and can only be accessed by a keycard-carrying tutor or staff member. So, no worries about kids wondering off to the basement unsupervised.

Summer Programming Plans
Your student’s needs obviously change during the summer months, but having a membership to The House can certainly help with that pesky summer slide. During that time, the focus transitions to on-going subject-based tutoring, college test prep, college essay coaching, entrance exam prep for middle schoolers and personal interest-based learning, such as coding, writing and park district-style classes and camps. However, if you’re not using your membership throughout summer, a small fee will hold your spot.

Do You Have to be a Member to Get Tutoring
No. While membership offers both quantifiable and immeasurable benefits, you do not need to be a member to utilize the tutoring services. Subject-based and test-prep tutoring is available to anyone, but members get priority scheduling and a 15% discount. Members also have guest passes they can use to bring non-member friends. This is particularly helpful if they are working on group projects.

Food Options On-Site
Anyone with a growing kid knows their appetites can be insatiable. The House has a self-service store that works on the honor system with healthy meals, snacks and drinks. You load money on your kid’s membership card designated for food, and they make purchases as-needed. Meals are provided by Osteria Langhe’s chef, an exclusive to The House members, with microwave instructions.

Other Programs and Social Opportunities.
Weekend evenings are more play, less work. There will be a rotating schedule of social activities, like movie nights, themed food nights and jam sessions, for members. The summer months will be a time where younger students find themselves getting cozy at The House, participating in camps and classes.

Future Expansion Plans
Work has already started on Lincoln Park and Highland Park locations. Look for those coming your way this summer.

Cost for Membership and Tutoring
There is no minimum contract, membership is month-to-month. There is a $100 registration fee and membership is $350/month. Private tutors are $115/hour for academic tutoring and $170/hour for test prep. Members receive a 15% discount on private tutoring.

If you are unsure about the cost-to-benefit return of a membership, schedule time to speak to the staff. The inspired enthusiasm and love for students and learning they exude will more than likely turn you into a believer.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… both!  The historic Proud Bird Food Bazaar re-opened late this summer with a free aviation museum, food court serving a little bit of everything, and it happens to be conveniently located right next to the runways of Los Angeles International Airport.  That means you get a free show of airplanes taking off and landing and you have a great new place to stop on your way to or from the airport. Read on to learn about the recently re-opened spot that will quickly become a family travel staple.

On Your Way to the Airport
Get ready to learn about how brave U.S. aviators helped our country to win wars and make great strides for mankind. Check out the gorgeous fiberglass replicas of famous planes. The fun and educational history of aviation will appeal to all ages from 2 to 92, which makes it a perfect visit on the way home from picking up visiting grandparents at the airport. Since you can also get a tasty snack from a variety of vendors and stretch your legs before or after a flight, it’s a great stop anytime you have to go to or come from LAX.

A Little History
The original Proud Bird restaurant was opened in 1967 by David Tallichet to pay homage to American achievements in aviation. The restaurant found a home in the hearts of the local community and has been a family favorite for generations. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the restaurant has been renovated and re-imagined and is now an international food hall and events center contained within an aviation museum.

Once You Have Tasted Flight
From the moment you pull into the driveway, you are greeted with the glory of all things aviation. The aviation museum touches on the past, present and future of flight. Fabulous fiberglass replicas of famous historic planes swoop over the convenient (and large and free) parking lot. As you walk in the door, the first thing you see is a giant P-40 Flying Tiger replica. If aviation hasn’t been your thing before, it may well be now.

Exhibits include a dedication to the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American aviators in the US armed forces, as well as a tribute to the many women aviators in history, including the brave Amelia Earhart. The immense collection of memorabilia includes military emblems, photos, hand-written letters and more. The museum also touches on modern-day aviation pioneers like Richard Branson and Elon Musk.  Kids who find history dusty will have fun checking out the cool interactive showcases featuring the futuristic space exhibit.

Working up an Appetite
Go for the (free) Aviation Museum, stay for the food. The Proud Bird went from an old school sit down restaurant with a menu that hadn’t changed much in 50 years to a large self-service food court boasting affordably priced meals ($6-$12 for most entrees) with an around-the-world flair. With six different kitchens preparing the specialties, you may wind up with an eclectic combination of Asian Fried Rice (a favorite with the kids), Mushroom Pizza with Arugula and Caramelized Onions (one word: Yum) and a messily delicious pulled pork sandwich. The sky’s the limit. And since most patrons are coming before or after a long flight, the idea of sitting and waiting for a meal doesn’t, well, sit well.  It’s perfect that kids can wander, look at the different foods on offer, and everyone can get exactly what appeals to them.

There’s a kids menu for the littlest aviators and the bathrooms are roomy and convenient and equipped with changing tables. Choose to eat indoors or on the outdoor patio next to the outdoor airplane park featuring a few real World War II aircrafts, including a DC-3 and a P-38 Lightning. From here you can watch the enormous planes from LAX taking off and landing all day long. It’s dramatic and beautiful and could even inspire your children to one day take to the skies themselves.

The Mile High Club
The grown up set might enjoy grabbing a local beer or handcrafted cocktail in the eclectic and cheekily-named bar, “The Mile-High Club.” It’s a popular spot for locals and is always brimming with good friends and good cheer. If caffeine is more your style, a full Starbucks offers you all your favorites.

The 411
The Proud Bird is open for lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday and an All-You-Can-Eat brunch and dinner on Sunday (which is just $29.95 for adults and $19.95 for kids 5-12 years old, those 4 and under are free).

Looking at all the exhibits is totally free, and you can arrange for a complimentary aviation tour; just visit the docent stand to schedule one for your flight crew.
