If the idea of swimsuit season makes you tense up, stick with us. We know it’s not always easy to fully embrace our bodies, but times are a-changin’! Social media, fashion websites, even store mannequins have gotten with the program and are showcasing a wide range of body types. Now more than ever,  it’s much easier to find models and influencers that represent our own bodies. And although there’s definitely a lot of work still to be done as far as size inclusivity goes across the board, there’s progress in the air. The body positivity movement isn’t going anywhere, so the perfect mom swimsuit is out there. We promise.

Let’s remember, no matter how you feel about your body, every body is a beach body. Our kids just want us to put on the bathing suit and spend the season creating memories with them. Not only do they not care about your oh-so-human “imperfections”, they likely don’t even see them. We can guarantee that no one sees what you consider to be flaws the same way that you do. At the end of the day, we want to set an example for our children. Showing them that their own bodies are perfect just as they are starts with us learning to love our own. We aren’t saying it’s that simple; but we are saying that the first step in getting comfortable at the beach or pool is just doing it. Putting on the swimsuit and getting out there. And we’re here to help.

These mom swimsuits from Amazon are totally mom-friendly. They’re flattering, confidence-boosting, and downright cute. We’ve made sure that they’re also supportive, offer various levels of coverage, and include a wide range of sizes. These are some seriously adorable and wearable suits that we’re confident you’ll feel great in. Get ready to flaunt that hot (yes, hot!) bod this spring and summer in one of these mom swimsuits, all snaggable from Amazon!

SweatyRocks Monokini

SweatyRocks

This little number is like a bikini without the commitment. It also comes in a ton of colors so you may want to pick up more than one!

Amazon Review: I have an athletic build (with a few extra winter pounds in this pic ;) but love the suit for the most part. I wish it was a little less cheeky / narrow cut in the back and the off shoulder side was a little higher for a little more chest coverage. Overall very happy with it. Quality fabric and stays in place. I returned L because it was too small and the XL fits well. I usually I'm somewhere between a medium and large both for top and bottom. —SavvyStagerAndHomeMaker

A recent survey of more than 1,000 Americans found that 40 percent of hopefully soon-to-be parents believe more resources or support would have helped them in their fertility struggles.

The survey, which was collected by OnePoll for Clearblue’s #Conceivinghood campaign, also found that 15 percent of TTC parents say their journey to a baby, “has been a struggle.” Of the parents polled, 32 percent also believe the struggle to conceive is too awkward to talk about—with 10 percent admitting they hadn’t told anyone about their fertility issues.

OnePoll and Clearblue ranked the top 10 list of “What’s it like trying to conceive?” The answers were:

“Exciting” – 41%
“Fun” – 41%
“Sexy” – 37%
“Stressful” – 25%
“Impersonal” – 20%
“Boring” – 18%
“Repetitive” – 17%
“Frustrating” – 17%
“Upsetting” – 15%
“Difficult” – 12%

Dr. Fiona Clancy, R&D Senior Director, Swiss Precision Diagnostics, said in a press release, “Society always talks about motherhood, fatherhood and parenthood, but there’s a blind spot when it comes to discussing that delicate stage of trying for a baby.”

Along with the survey responses, OnePoll also asked the TTC parents about their individual perspectives on fertility and the road to parenthood. One participant said, “It takes time, especially for non-traditional families. It feels like you are alone in a world of people who have it easy and complain about problems when they don’t understand how easy they have it. But hold on because there are others of us out there.”

“What exactly is sexting?” one mom asked me the other day, with a hint of embarrassment. I assured her not to worry as the digital lexicon changes as fast as her preteen’s moods and energy levels. I explained that sexting is any sexually explicit content sent via text messaging, face timing, or video chatting – ranging from provocative poses to seminude or even nude pictures.

I know you may be thinking, sexting?…but she’s only ten years old! The truth is, although at this stage, she is merely obsessed with selfies, sexting is the selfie’s BFF and it’s on the rise amongst teens (both boys and girls). In other words, if she is posting, she is more likely to eventually sext. You need to be prepared and to prepare her for what’s ahead.

Why are girls sexting? Girls often feel pressured to sext as a way of pleasing and complying with requests from others (whom they are acquainted both in real life and online). Sexting is a means of feeling sexy and hot. Often, they use sexting and experimenting with sexy video chatting as a way to explore their sexuality safely. Sometimes, they do it as a joke or “just for fun” flirtation. Sometimes, not complying with a sexting request can result in rejection and social isolation – a real catastrophe for a growing girl. As Peggy Orenstein’s reports in her book, Girls & Sex, “Coercion into sexting appears to cause more long-term anxiety, depression, and trauma than coercion into real-life sex.” (p. 22). Unfortunately, sexting can be a gateway to sexual objectification, and even worse, sexual abuse or exploitation.

When I speak with parents about their daughter’s use of social media sites like Instagram, Snapchat, and the newly popular app called Sarahah where one can anonymously post “honest” feedback on others’ posts, I know they are worried. They struggle between wanting to give their daughters the freedom and privacy to cultivate independence and needing to protect them from the often dark and dangerous virtual world.

When I asked older girls why they sext, I received responses such as: “It’s fun, I want to fit in, it helps me feel sexy, and, if I don’t, I’ll be left out”. None of them admitted this but I sensed all of them are feeling the mounting pressure to text (and sext) as a means of feeling a sense of security in belonging and to feel good about their bodies.

Knowing sexting is fast becoming an integral, even expected part of a girl’s journey, how do we give her what she needs to prepare her for what’s ahead, even though she seems too young to be an active sexting participant? Here are some preventative strategies:

She needs open and honest communication; give her your time and presence: having consistent conversation with her may increase her comfort level as she learns to share what’s really on her mind and the true intricacies of her day. Talking time is beneficial to help her better understand who she is and who she is becoming and it’s especially advantageous when you have more heavy conversations such as the dangers and damage of sexting. Think about it – when you speak with her daily about the ups and downs of her life and approach these talks with open curiosity and empathetic understanding, you are creating a normalcy as in “this is how we do it.” Balanced conversations of talking and listening will have a natural ease. Subsequently, the time you spend with her is not only the planting the seeds of connection for when her life is made more complicated with the intricacies of sex, sexualization, and sexting, but you are giving her the presence she needs right now.

She needs attention; provide the right kind: It’s all too easy to compliment girls on what they look like, “I love your dress” and “You look so pretty today”, or to correct unacceptable behavior, “Don’t slouch” and “Please stop slamming your door.” What’s more challenging, yet more necessary, is positive attention, focused on the right stuff. We need to go deeper with her by looking beyond her body and seeing where she is thriving. Try complimenting her on how well she expressed her feelings, how she compromises with a friend on a play date so there is turn-taking, or how she’s being true to herself by playing tag with the boys at lunch instead of walking around and talking with the girls. At the same time, notice her successful choices and decisions such as when she chooses to go to bed at a reasonable time without technology time beforehand or when she opts out of watching a scary movie so she doesn’t have nightmares like last time.  When we give her quality attention and can take the time to ask her how these kinds of compliments feel, she will start to discern how different kinds of attention feels different. There is superficial attention that feels good at first, such as the request for a sext of her lying on her bed, but can leave her feeling empty and confused. And, then there is more meaningful attention that bolsters her like the request to help a friend with homework because she’s mastering math.

She needs to set and keep boundaries; teach her how. Two little words – “yes” and “no” can hold tremendous power as girls learn how to set boundaries. “Yes, I want to play with you and I am available.” “No, I don’t want to play today; I am not available.” When she’s little, we can start with easy requests like these – encouraging her to first consider what she wants and then provide her answer – kindly and firmly. When she’s older, and the requests feel more challenging and pressured, she’s already had the practice and can assert, “No, sexting you is not something I will do – how dare you ask.” Boundary setting teaches her she has value and worth and and that she can trust herself and learn what works for her and what feels best. Boundaries will keep her safe and clear about her own standards.

I know sexting may be a foreign concept for parents of young girls but it’s also a concept that needs consideration. As we strengthen girls by meeting their needs for authentic communication, healthy attention, and clear boundaries, we are preparing them for the more challenging parts of their journey and teaching them that they can feel good without the need to sext.

Dear Confessional,

I don’t think it’s a mid-life crisis moment that I went through, although some may say it could sound similar. I wasn’t depressed, I don’t think. I wasn’t sad in any way. Maybe bored a bit? Confused perhaps? Contemplating in some way. Whatever you want to call it, I was re-awakening, re-defining, re-evaluating, and emerging from my chrysalis as a new version of my former self. Yes, that’s the way I would describe it exactly.

The more that I speak to other moms, the more that I come to understand that this peculiar phase in motherhood is all too well shared, but often not verbalized. The term that I have coined for this strange, often temporary cloud, is the “Mommy Rut.”

Many of us have experienced some essence of this period. From lively 20-something year olds, we generally have a clear vision of our profession and then work our academic and professional lives until we get there. Marriage and babies enter the picture in a beautiful way, but then everything changes.

New moms are typically unprepared or forewarned for the way that parenthood reshapes a marriage, your personality, your long-term plan whether as a stay-at-home mom or returning to work. Balancing mommy life and wife-life, not to mention putting work on hiatus or returning a bit more exhausted and distracted, can take quite a toll. The sleep deprivation and cold meals, leftovers from the kids’ plates, or even eating standing up may not be how you would have envisioned this parenting scenario, even if you wouldn’t trade it for the world. Then just when you think that you’ve mastered your daily routine enough to leave the house before lunchtime and/or getting your bundle of kids to school on time, this new wave slams into you, head on.

Identifying the “Mommy Rut”

One morning, I returned home from dropping the kids off at school and realized that I stopped looking at myself in the mirror. I stopped smiling and laughing as much because I was so focused on keeping the kids safe, well-fed, on time, and house in order. I felt like a robot or drill sergeant. I didn’t have time for me. I didn’t look at myself anymore because it didn’t matter. Everything was about the kids, my husband, and my home.

When I finally did look in the mirror, I realized that I needed to re-focus and re-awaken out of this mom-fog. I wasn’t sad, and I wasn’t regretful even one molecule—perhaps I was a shell of former myself who was going through the motions, but not fulfilling my dreams, feeling energized, or really loving and accepting myself inside and out… because I didn’t have the time or the mental clarity. I was a semblance of myself without a “whole” definition.

That’s when I woke up and realized that I was in the midst of “Mommy Rut,” even in my 30-something years.

Taking Action

This was my chrysalis moment. I needed to do some deep soul-searching to figure out who I truly wanted to become and then devise a plan to make it happen. Something deep inside of me was itchy, and I didn’t know where to begin to change it, so I simply made this mental list and went from there.

Personal:

One thing was for certain—my mom-bod just didn’t do it for me. I wanted my 20-something vibe back. I wanted to look at myself and see the best version of me. So I did.

  • I started by not being the human garbage disposal (GDS syndrome) and was more careful about what I put into my mouth. Every extra handful counts!
  • I made myself a priority too and made sure that my meals were warm and sitting down. I ate more often and in smaller portions. My mouthfuls were nutritionally meaningful—not a handful of emotional carb-stuffing to justify a mom time-out.
  • I dressed to impress MYSELF, even if my 20-something fashion evolved a bit since. I wanted to feel good about who I saw in the mirror, inside and out. * I rallied myself around a great group of mom friends from the kids’ school and made it a point to be social. After all, girl friends are the best people to relate. They just get it—and it feels good to not feel like you’re on an island of mommy moments.
  • I became more active and joined Zumba. Not only did I love the excuse for an extra social hour, but I also toned up and got to get my jam on.

Fun Mom:

Perhaps the most disgruntling feeling was not feeling fun anymore. I know I can be, but somehow along the way I lost it a little when my main focus was keeping the peace, and maintaining health and safety of the troop. I felt more like a crossing guard/cafeteria monitor than a fun parent. Something had to change.

  • I stopped raising my voice so much. I allowed the children to make mistakes and earn consequences that were there’s alone. My tone remained supportive, centered, and loving. I stopped being a Dr. Jekyll & Momma Hyde parent.
  • I put my phone down and engaged more.
  • I put the dishes and laundry away later so that I could be more present.
  • I created personal projects with the children so we could have special moments together and feel proud.
  • I played more music in the house, and we all danced more. We stopped living in a glass house.
  • We cooked together more, and the kids were given more responsibilities to feel engaged, helpful, and appreciated.
  • I spent more time with each child before bedtime to talk about every detail from the day.

Marriage Boost:

Every marriage goes through exciting waves of intimacy and emotional connection, and also hits a few lulls along the way. Those lulls seem to lend to a lot of butting heads too. Sometimes the inside rut causes a stale vibe with others too. I needed to get out of the funk and feel sexy and supportive again.

  • I stopped creating expectations for how I would do things, and stepped back. I became more appreciative and thankful.
  • I offered ways for my husband to succeed with the children, instead of criticizing.
  • I opened up more about my anxieties, fears, concerns, and leaned on my best friend, husband, for support.
  • Intimacy became often and incredible, and so we connected more in the everyday.
  • We began messaging each other encouraging and loving notes throughout the day.

Professional Prowess:

I loved my number one job of being a total full-time mom. I’m not complaining at all, but honestly, that former part of myself that dressed up for work and felt professional with real adults using big vocabulary was missing a bit. I wanted to do something that was just mine, just for me. I needed to make a plan for a professional role that wouldn’t get in the way of my main, most important job of parenting, availability, and flexibility for the kids.

  • I redefined my honest and deep professional aspirations. I spoke to peers and friends, and discovered new ideas.
  • I made a plan and began in small steps. I focused only on the tasks for that day and made sure to conquer them, one step and a time.
  • I took chances. I constantly risked rejection and put myself out on the line, over and over again. My passion for my profession drives and compels me to be unstoppable, whether I win some or loose some.
  • My vision started to become realized and grow, expand. I was finally chasing—and catching—my dream job.

Effects of Digging Out

Something incredible started to happen over the last couple of months. I started to smile again. I started to laugh whole-heartedly. I started to feel happy, sexy, proud, fulfilled, and loved—not just by those who surrounded me—but by my own person. My family feels it too.

You see, I emerged from that chrysalis. I opened my eyes from that mom-fog—“Mommy Rut”—and rediscovered myself again. There was no more guilt, no more frustration, no more discomfort in action or inaction, and no self-doubt. I felt free, and it feels right. I was succeeding in every facet, because I defined my needs, made a plan, made the change, and started to feel whole once again.

Test it out and make a plan. You deserve to look, feel, and be your best. Love yourself, and you will then find the ability to love everyone else with your entire core.  As for me, I am proud to settle in my new butterfly suit… and soar.

with Love,

Actor Kieran Culkin and wife Jazz Charton are parents! The couple welcomed their daughter, Kinsey Sioux, on lucky Friday the 13th.

This is the first child for the pair who shared their baby news on Instagram recently. While the couple is thrilled to have their baby girl home, the new mama admitted her birth didn’t come easily.

Charton shared on Instagram, “After 25 hours of laboring at home, we arrived at the hospital too late for any pain meds as I was already dilated and ready to push.” The new mom added, “If I ever do this again I want ALL THE DRUGS, all of them.”

Even though Charton continued, “I live in sexy surgical mesh underwear that’s keeping a world of pain in check, my boobs are engorged, I burst blood vessels In my face from pushing, my big pregnant belly that I loved so much deflated to a mere paunch,” she admits that it’s all worth it, also writing, “I’ve never been more in love and we’ve never felt more complete.”
