New moms aren’t your average giftees. New schedules, new workday routines, and a whole new person make your usual go-to Mother’s Day gifts a little less reliable. You’ll also want to skip any presents that are also kinda for the baby (a new breast pump is cool and appreciated, but not today). Simple, right? No worries. That’s why we’re here.

We’ve put together a guide that makes picking out the best gifts easy. Whether she’s your wife, friend, sister, daughter, coworker, or another loved one, these thoughtful and helpful presents are fantastic on their own, or combined with goodies for the new little one. Or, snag a few that she’ll love from this list and put together a sure-to-be-appreciated box or basket. Whatever you choose, these Mother’s Day gifts for new moms make sure they feel loved!

We get it: Sleepless nights come with the territory as a new parent. But there comes a time, usually at around 3 or 4 months, when getting the baby to sleep is suddenly a thing.  How you lull your little one into slumber—that is, which baby sleep training method you choose to make it happen—is the question new parents like to debate.

Will you let your baby “cry it out”? Are you a fan of “Ferber-izing”? Or might you opt for no method at all?

“There’s a lot of emotion around sleep training and not a lot of science,” said Dr. Elham Raker, a Los Angeles-based pediatrician, blogger, and parent coach.  “I really would love to take the pressure off parents who say, ‘You have to do it this way or that way.’ What works for you mentally, physically, emotionally—that’s what you should do.”

In other words: There is no “right way” to sleep-train a baby.

“Sometimes sleep training is not possible because there are other kids in the house and a cry-it-out method is not realistic,” she said. “Or sometimes parents really need to do the cry-it-out method and get kids to sleep as soon as possible because they have to go to work the next day.  There are a lot of factors that are important to consider.”

That said, you’re probably very, very tired… and that baby needs to sleep! So what are your options? Here’s a brief rundown of the most popular sleep training methods. See if any resonate with you. But remember, it’s your baby and your sleep (or lack thereof). So do what works.

Note: Experts say the best time to start sleep-training a baby is around 4-6 months old.

The Ferber Method

What is it: Developed by renowned pediatrician Richard Ferber, author of the best-selling book Solve Your Child’s Sleep Problems and director of the Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Children’s Hospital Boston, this method aims to help children learn to fall asleep on their own by allowing them to cry for short periods before parents soothe them. This method is also referred to as check and console, graduated extinction, or the interval method.

How it’s done: Put your child into her crib when she is drowsy (but not asleep), then leave the room. When/if she cries, wait a few minutes (three is recommended on the first night) before going into the room to comfort her. When you go in, don’t pick her up, feed her, or turn on the light. Instead, just pat (or rub) her on the back and talk to her in a comforting voice. Do this for just a few minutes, then leave the room again.

If your baby cries again, wait a little longer (five minutes) before doing the same steps. Repeat this process, extending the time between check-ins, until your baby falls asleep. The next night, wait a little longer before going in the first time and repeat the process. It helps some parents to keep a sleep log so they can see the progress night after night.

Benefits: You feel like you’re tending to your baby’s needs, and most babies respond to this method in about a week.

The hard part: You can’t pick up your child when she’s crying, which can feel like a big challenge. (Even if studies have shown that cry-it-out sleep methods don’t cause long-term damage.) Also, some babies become more agitated when parents come into the room and respond better to a full-extinction method.

More information: Whattoexpect.com

The Cry-It-Out Method (CIO)

What is it: The infamous, often-controversial method of letting your baby cry until she learns how to soothe herself to sleep without your help. It’s also known as extinction.

How it’s done: It’s simple, but perhaps the hardest method to tolerate for many parents (those baby cries!). After your usual nighttime routine (that should include a bath, lullabies, stories, etc.), place your baby into the crib fully awake. When she cries, don’t comfort her. The idea is that she will eventually get tired and fall asleep independently.

Sure, it won’t be easy when you’re standing at your baby’s door listening to those desperate wails, but experts say most babies will respond to this method within a week—with babies crying increasingly less by the third or fourth day. Keep in mind, this method only works if you put your baby down when she’s tired, so look for signs of sleepiness, including rubbing her eyes, pulling at her ears, or overall fussiness.

Benefits: It works quickly and, if you can safely ignore your babies’ protest, parents might be able to get more sleep (this helps if both parents have to wake up for work in the morning).

The hard part: Those cries can be stressful for both baby and parent! And while studies have shown that letting your baby cry at night isn’t harmful to her development (as long as she’s getting the requisite love and care during the day), some experts still advise against this method due to undue stress it may cause the baby (this study, for instance, found that letting crying it out did cause an increase in babies’ blood cortisol levels, though this is not definitively linked to any long-term consequences). It is also unrelentingly hard for most parents.

“I cried more than my baby did when we were sleep training,” blogger Fiona Tapp said in this Romper article (Spoiler-alert: Her baby learned to sleep independently after a week of the CIO method). “I sat in our office next door to his bedroom, stopwatch in hand, and felt like a delinquent mother ignoring his little cries.”

“The good news, after one week he was going to sleep by himself in his own room, sleeping through the night like a champ,” she wrote. “The bad news? Well, the process was the most stressful, tear-filled week of my life.”

The Pick-Up/Put-Down Method

What is it: A gentle sleep-training method in which you go to your baby to comfort them, but then put them back down in the crib and leave the room once she is soothed (repeating this process until baby falls asleep). It’s similar to the Ferber Method, but you’re allowed to pick up and cuddle your baby.

How it’s done: After your usual nighttime routine, place your sleepy baby into her crib and leave the room. If she cries, wait a full minute, then go in and try patting your baby lightly while shushing them (whispering). If she is still crying, pick her up and offer cuddles until she is calm but still awake. Then, place her back in her crib and leave the room. Repeat this process until your baby is asleep.

The next night, repeat this process but add two minutes to the wait time each time before you go back into the room. Repeat every night, adding two minutes more every night. The goal is that your baby learns that she is safe—You are there!—but that she can fall asleep independently.

Benefits: You can pick up your crying baby, which feels right for many parents (even if it means losing sleep in the meantime).

The hard part: It can take longer—both to get the baby back to sleep and to eventually sleep-train your baby—when using this method. This is hard, especially if parents need to wake up and go to work in the morning.

More information: Whattoexpect.com

The Shush/Pat Method

What is it: A precursor to the pick-up/put-down method, this one (which was developed by Tracy Hogg, author of the bestselling “Baby Whisperer” books) works for newborns up to about 4 months old and relies on a particular way of “shushing” and “patting” your baby to lull her to sleep.

How it’s done: Lay your sleepy baby in her crib, propping her on her side (since tummy sleeping isn’t recommended), and steadily pat the center of her back while whispering “Shh” in her ear. If your baby doesn’t want to be put down, you can also shush/pat her over your shoulder. Keep shushing and patting until you feel your baby relax and fall into a deep sleep. Then lay her in her crib and leave the room.

Benefits: It works quickly to get your baby to sleep, and can also easily be used for naptimes.

The hard part: This method is meant for younger babies and, consequently, doesn’t always translate into a baby/toddler who will fall asleep independently.

More information: Thepostpartumparty.com

The Chair Method

What is it: A gentle sleep training method that allows you to comfort and sit close to your baby as she fusses. Parents sit in a chair next to the crib, moving their position further and further away each night until they no longer need to be in the room. This method works best for older babies (6-9 months).

How it’s done: After your usual bedtime routine, place your sleepy baby in her bed and sit in a chair just beside the crib. You can sing or offer soft, soothing words to (hopefully) help your baby slip into sleep. If your baby cries, you can give verbal comfort and rub your baby’s back but don’t pick her up. Sit back down in the chair when your baby calms down—and leave the room only when your baby is asleep.

After three nights, move the chair a little further from the crib, and repeat the above steps with a little less verbal comforting—use just soft “Shh” noises to calm your baby. After three more nights, move the chair by the door and repeat. Then, finally, move the chair into the hallway (but still be visible).  After about two weeks of doing this consistently, you should make it out of the baby’s room.

Benefits: You are there to comfort your baby when she fusses.

The hard part: You can’t pick her up when she fusses. Also, some babies simply won’t be OK with you being there and not picking them up. “The pro of this method is that mom or dad is there and present,” sleep consultant Alanna McGinn told Today’s Parent. “But the con is, there will likely still be some crying, and now baby is watching you watch them cry. It can be really hard to be consistent with this method.”

More information: Whattoexpect.com

The “No Method” Method

Do none of these methods sound right to you? That’s OK, too! Maybe you’re the sort of parent who just wants to do what feels right in the moment—to heck with parenting advice and social media missives! Or maybe you’d prefer to co-sleep with your baby and feed on demand?

Remember: There’s no right way.

“I would say the important thing is, ‘How do we get the best version of us to be available to our kids during the day,” Raker said. “Whatever you need to do at night to make that possible I would go with that method.”

It’s important to note that children with neurodiversity including ADHD and autism may have a harder time falling asleep—and these troubles may start in infancy. In addition, some children just require less sleep (though all babies and kids should get at least the minimum of the recommended amount of sleep per day).

“Here’s what I want to say to parents: You may have tried everything; you may have done everything by the book, and it still doesn’t work,” Raker said. “There’s nothing wrong with you. There’s nothing wrong with your child. If you want to go to them, go to them. If you want to cosleep, cosleep. Do what works for you; just do it safely.”

Remember the days when we spent hours perfecting our hair? We don’t really miss the zig-zag parts, but having unlimited time to spend on perfecting our hair was pretty awesome, right? It’s possible that now it feels like “cute simple hairstyles” mean a messy bun and… a messy bun. Which is fine (we love them, too). But we’ve got a few hair tricks up our sleeves to save time and look awesome.

Whether you’re rocking short, long, curly, straight, thick, thin, or any combination out there, we’ve rounded up some of the very best tips and tricks to tame your tresses in no time flat. There’s not a single rule out there that says quick hairstyles are all ponytails and air drying (though if that’s your style, we fully support it). If you’re looking for ways to change up your look, you’re in the right place.

Rosie the Riveter-Inspired Updo

If you’re a die-hard messy bun person, here’s a quick way to update it from @kandeejohnson! You’ll want super texturized hair so it holds the style better and gives you the “messy” vibe we’re all going for with this one. It’s also a great second- or third-day hair option. Just start with dry shampoo.

You’ll need:

Twisted Half-Up

You can pull this one off with hair that’s around shoulder-length or longer! All it takes is a couple of elastics and a twist of the wrist (@megs.beauty.project slows it down so it’s easy) If you have curly or wavy hair, you might want to consider straightening it out a little bit first (straighter hair shows off the details of this ‘do), but you can leave it texturized if you prefer. Out of your face and looks like it took way longer than it really does.

You’ll need:

Half Up with a Claw Clip

Think you can’t pull off a claw clip with shorter hair? Think again. @montana_coles breezes through this style that’s giving serious Cool Girl. Pick a cute claw clip for casual days, or try an embellished or metal one for the office.

You’ll need:

Bubble Fauxhawk

“Bubble” styles are some of the most fun and easiest ways to change up your ‘do. Julie from @artistryofserendipity makes it completely foolproof, plus it can be done on all lengths of hair!

You’ll need:

  • Those trusty clear elastics (are you sensing a theme here?)
  • A 3-barrel waver if you want to replicate Julie’s texture (this best-seller is a winner)

Low Double Buns

Double buns that literally take less time than just brushing and blow drying would? Sign. Us. Up. This hack from @everydayscrunchie (how adorable is that?) is lightening fast and excellent for shorter and mid-length hair. The ultimate in cute simple hairstyles, right?

You’ll need:

  • Clear elastics
  • Two small claw clips—we’re recommending sticking with the classic ones that are shown since you’re “rolling” the clip into the bun and the curved clip teeth are really helpful here (these are good to have on-hand!)
  • A little smoothing + shine spray for the sides (this one is perfect). Only use a little if you have straight and/or fine hair; otherwise, you’ll risk looking a little more greasy than smooth. You can also skip this part completely!

Side Twist Bun

We love a style that looks so much more involved than it really is. @shelly_lynn_beauty is doing this one on day 5 hair, but you could do it virtually whenever, even if it’s damp.

You’ll need:

  • A ponytail elastic (these should last you a while!)
  • Texture spray if you need extra “grip” or are doing this style on freshly-washed hair (it’s also a great go-to on days when your hair is feeling flat or a little lifeless—this one is our pick.)
  • “Bunny ear” scrunchie (you don’t have to, but adding one of these cute little scrunchies makes it look even more polished)
  • Finishing spray

Claw Clip Space Buns

Repeat after us: Space buns aren’t just for kids. They’re so fast. They’re super easy. They get the hair out of your face. You also get the bonus of a little height to your style, and that always makes it look like you tried (even though as @samanthasbeautyconfessions shows above, you didn’t have to try very hard at all).

You’ll need:

  • A tail comb for parting
  • Two mini claw clips (snap up this 6 pack)
  • Hairspray if you need some extra hold

Straightening Iron Waves

How dare we add something like a full head of waves to the list, right? Stick with us. If you’ve ever wondered how these undone, messy, lasts-for-days waves are created, @mathilde_heather nails it. The trick is to gently pull the iron through your hair, then twist the strand back with your fingers while it’s still hot to set the curl. Even though this particular style takes a little longer initially, with some dry shampoo, it lasts for days and looks better the longer you wear it! Remember to straighten the ends for the ultimate “undone” vibe.

You’ll need:

  • A straightener. We like this one because the barrel is actually curved, too, making it easier to pull it down the hair strand into a curl.
  • A claw clip to divide your hair into sections for curling
  • Mathilde is using this dry finishing spray for lived-in texture

Lifted Rockstar

https://www.instagram.com/reel/CxNgffnu3m_/?hidecaption=true

We definitely didn’t forget about you, short-hair queens. @kaitlyn_hubert knows a thing or two about making her hot cropped locks pop. If your hair is short, you probably already love how fast it is to style and go, so try this to mix things up with minimal effort.

You’ll need:

Hairpin Bun

Aside from doing literally nothing, this is about as fast as “doing your hair” and pulling off a cute simple hairstyle can possibly get. @hellohairhouse takes seconds to make this soft style come to life.

You’ll need:

Barbie Ponytail

Whether you’re into Barbie or not, this bouncy pony from @haiirologybyjen amps up your everyday updo. Something about a swingy style that just puts you in a good mood. Bonus!

You’ll need:

  • Hair elastic
  • A teasing brush (remember to push down and only down when you’re teasing. Don’t go back and forth with a teasing comb or brush unless you really love tangled hair)
  • Volumizing hair powder (sprinkle a little at your roots and use your fingers to distribute it)

Scarf Wrap

Want to try something other than your usual headband? This cute simple hairstyle takes three folds and a knot. Full stop. We really appreciate @batshevahaart giving us a quick tutorial about where to place it so that it stays put, and you can always use bobby pins if needed to avoid slipping.

You’ll need:

"Robot Dreams"

A movie poster from Robot Dreams, which is a new family movie in 2024
Arcadia Motion Pictures

Spanish director Pablo Berger's Robot Dreams was a surprise nominee at this year's Oscars. It lost the best-animated film award to The Boy and the Heron, but that doesn't make it any less magical. About a city pup who orders a companion robot to stave off loneliness, the '80s-set musical has little dialogue but oodles of charm. It's one of those viewing experiences that will entertain all the eyeballs in the room, but go a step further with the adults and have them crying buckets.

Starring: Ivan Labanda, Albert Trifol Segarra, Rafa Calvo, Jose Garcia Tos, Jose Luis Mediavilla, Graciela Molina, and Esther Solans

Hands and fingers are not made for repeated stresses of weeding, but this tool shifts the stress to the much more powerful muscles of the arms. It made weeding unbelievably fast and easy. If needed, you can put your full weight behind the weeding tool. It totally changed my approach to weeding, which understandably has been my least favorite chore. I am going to buy them for everyone I know who has a yard. I probably will not need to use any weed killer for my yard in the future. Win-win!" —Regina

Thayers Facial Toner

bottle of thayers rose petal toner
Amazon/Thayers

This stuff has been around forever and has some majorly loyal customers. Non-drying, hydrating, and pore-refining, it comes in multiple scents, too.

Real 5-Star Review: "I’ve been using Thayer’s, in combination with other skincare products, for years. Every few days I use glycolic acid in lieu of Thayer’s, but I get compliments on my skin all the time. I wish I had known to take care of my skin in my early 20s, but late is better than never. Mostly what I love about this toner is that it is not drying. I already have dry skin and have lived in dry climates most my life so it is not harsh. It is also alcohol free which is awesome. I’ve tried all the scents through the years, the rose petal one is the best in my opinion, but they’re all great and the scented ones don’t seem to irritate my skin (also have pretty sensitive skin). Thank you Thayer’s, you have a happy customer for life!" —Jackie

Wrinkle-Free Sheet Set

Amazon/Danjor

Breathable, soft, wrinkle-free, and affordable? What else could you possibly ask for? Comes in several colors, too.

Real 5-Star Review: "Love these sheets!! They are soft without the weird feel of microfiber. (For some reason the feeling of microfiber makes my skin crawl.) They wash up nicely and don’t look like a wrinkled wadded mess out of the dryer. They stay put securely under the corners. Only one small downside is the trimmed/hemmed edge of the top sheet and the pillow cases has just a simple stitch - not a wide decorative hem or any trim. It doesn’t look the nicest in turn down but that’s minor. I love the sheets otherwise and will probably buy another pair." —BritneyW

Pet Hair Remover and Reusable Lint Roller

chom chom pet hair roller
Amazon/ChomChom

The "world's best pet hair remover" isn't just a claim—we use this on everything (and we don't miss the sticky sheets on other lint rollers).

Real 5-Star Review: "I always wondered how it was that I couldn’t get dog hair off the couch using…everything, but as soon as I sat down it jumped all over me. I’ve tried everything from lint rollers specifically for ‘pet hair’ to vacuums ‘for pet hair’, nothing worked. It seems everything is for poofy fine dog hair or cat hair. I have a Jack Russell looking kinda dog (she’s just amazing, who cares the breed). Her hair is like porcupine barbs! It gets on something and can’t get it off! This Chom Chom is amazing. I just ran around the house like a little kid with a new toy! I can now sit on my couch and put my shoes on without getting dog hair on my black pants. I won’t have to hand guests a lint roller! Funny thing is that you couldn’t even see her hair on the furniture. Until it was too late." —Kelli Terrell

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

jar of CeraVe lotion
Amazon/CeraVe

Another been-around-forever product, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is chock full of ceramides (they restore the skin's barrier). You can use it on your body, face, and hands.

Real 5-Star Review: "This is the best product I've ever used for hands & body for treating and preventing dry skin. My daughter choses CeraVe cream exclusively, rather than any other moisturizer for her eczema (and believe me, she's tried them all). Both of our dermatologists say it's the best, too. It's neither sticky nor greasy, and feels great on the skin - so is perfect for use after bathing. Because it has no scent, it doesn't trigger allergy/sensitivity, it won't compete if you use perfume, and it won't impart an awful taste if it's on your hands when you're preparing food. But even after you wash your hands it seems to keep on working - in fact I need reapply it only if I'm doing a lot of washing or if the weather is unusually dry. I use it on my hands every night at bedtime, only occasionally need more during the day, and get fewer hangnails. I'd use this on my face if I needed a lot of moisturizing. This is a WONDERFUL product." —PAT A

Thera Cane Massager

blue cane shaped body massager
Amazon/Thera Cane

Sure, it looks like torture device, but this massager is the ultimate knot-buster. It's ergonomically designed so you can use it alone, too. This is no joke.

Real 5-Star Review: "I remember seeing this advertised on TV many years ago, and always thought about getting one. I'm a wiry kind of guy with tight muscles, and this was one of the most helpful tools when it came to myofascial release. I tend to get achy shoulders, and need the pressure under my wing, which is easy to reach using the straight or curved knobs. It also worked great to unlock my lower hips and back after I sprained them. It does take some learning and getting used to, you have to just play with it and figure out what positions work. Funny enough I don't even need to use it much anymore because it helped moved my seized-up muscles back into place. But any time I get an achy back or hips, a few minutes with this is all it takes to sort me out." —DDeazy

3D Eye Sleep Mask

purple sleep mask
MZOO

A sleep mask that's skin and eyelash-friendly is a dream (pardon the pun), especially when you add an adjustable strap and a full blackout design. It comes in several colors.

Real 5-Star Review: "My eyes are very sensitive to light so I have always needed these black out eye covers for when I sleep but have avoided purchasing one because they crush my lash extensions. When I came across these on Amazon I knew I had to give it a try. They are totally blacked out which makes it strange when your eyes are open while wearing the mask. You can blink and there is no pressure on your lashes whatsoever. I am a stomach sleeper so my face is mostly down in my pillow, no issue at all. I hope this review helps you if you are skeptical like I was. The fabric is silky soft and the padding around the eyes is soft enough that it doesn't put pressure on your under eye area or leave marks on your face." —tiffany

Real 5-Star Review: "My coworker told me about these leggings, and I finally decided to get a pair. Girl!! Let me tell you this was the best decision! First of all, when you’ve been down in a squat position, they are not see-through, so it’s good to take to the gym on a hike or even to relax around in the house. They are so comfortable and the waistband feels great, not too tight not too loose. You will not regret it, I guarantee it!" —Honest Kendall

YETI Cooler

Amazon/YETI

We probably don't have to tell you how great this cooler it. Afterall, it's a YETI and you likely already know they make nothing but amazing products. This one is easy to move (thanks to the wheels), dent and ding resistant, and will keep your drinks cold for such a long time.

Real 5-Star Review: "Worth every dollar. So much so, I purchased two. Wheels are very rugged—someone who wrote an alternate perspective in their review was very wrong. It’s heavy, but that’s why you get wheels. I bought the dry tray and steel locking insert (pictured). I keep it chained to a tree if in view—these are popular with the unscrupulous. Kept in the shade and not excessively opening the lid, it kept food cold for three full days and was still going. We use it to Overland off the grid. If you use it for beverages with lots of repeated access, common sense will let you know to cut the time in half that it stays cold. Likewise if you leave in the sun. This is certified and tested as grizzly bear proof—say no more. That means they put two small padlocks on the corners, filled it with good smelling stuff, and gave it to grizzlies to play with. Just think about how your cheap brand would prevail that . . ." —John S.

Clean Skin Club Face Towels XL

box of disposable face cloths
Clean Skin Club/Amazon

We normally don't love single-use products, so if your current skin regimen is working for you, don't change a thing! However, if your skin is highly-reactive, breaking out, or extremely delicate, the Clean Skin Club Face Towels are an excellent way to make sure you're not adding any extra bacteria, detergent, or harsh texture to your face. They're 100% USDA biobased, sustainably made, and Climate Pledge-Friendly. And, once you've dried your face, use that towel to wipe down your sink, shower door, or to dry your makeup brushes!

Real 5-Star Review: "I have extremely sensitive skin, and when I am not taking care of my skin, it shows. I started using these over a year ago, and about 2 months ago I ran out. I did not order any until last week, and I tell you what - I can absolutely tell the difference between using these and a regular washcloth or towel. Mind you, I try not to scrub my face with either type of towel (I try to only pat dry as needed after washing) but at the end of the day I need to get my face clean whether I wash it properly or not. These are AMAZING. They are great if you only need to pat dry, and they are even better when you need to wet them down and wipe your face clean. They are soft and absorbent, not flimsy at all, and I can even wipe my face, rinse the towel, and wipe my face again without it breaking down. They suggest using them to wipe down your countertops after using before you throw them away, and I very often do this before tossing. I will also say, I am not a huge fan of disposable products - especially when there are easy reusable alternatives, but unfortunately for me this is one time that I allow myself to purchase disposable. The difference they make for me is absolutely worth it. They are also great to travel with - I stashed a few in a ziplock bag and take with me anytime I travel. I wholeheartedly recommend. Note: While I do like the size of the towels, I also sometimes cut them in half to get more uses." —Heather Meyer

Want to really get to know someone? Play a round of Would You Rather. After all, when faced with choices ranging from thought-provoking to downright silly, people will always surprise you. The questions you use when playing with adults don’t have to be life-or-death choices; they can be funny, outrageous, or thought-provoking, but all should be interesting! We’ve rounded up 35 of our favorite would-you-rather questions for adults below, but if you’re playing with kids and need more age-appropriate questions, we’ve got the best would-you-rather questions for kids and teens
