I was 42 years old when I gave birth to my son.

Why 42 years old?

There are several reasons:

  • I only got married at 33 years old.
  • I had a demanding career that involved lots of travel.
  • We lived in South Africa and unfortunately, did not think it was a safe environment to raise a child.
  • We eventually emigrated to Australia, which involved finding new jobs and settling into life in a new country.

Of course, there is never a perfect time to have a baby, but there was another reason I waited so long….I am not what you would call naturally maternal.

Do not get me wrong, I love children. I dote on my nieces and nephew. When they were little, I would have them over for sleepovers, take them to the zoo and the circus. They are teenagers and young adults now, and I still enjoy spending time with them.

I just did not have this overwhelming desire to have a child.

Until I turned the big 40.

Suddenly I worried I would look back on my life and regret not having a child. I know my reason for deciding to have a child may seem almost unnatural to some people. But my reason for having a child does not make me love my son any less, and I could not imagine my life without him.

So, there I was at the age of 40 trying to get pregnant with my first baby. Understandably at my age, this was not without some heartache, and after three miscarriages we decided to turn to IVF. I consider myself extremely blessed that after only one round of IVF, I was pregnant with my son.

When my son was around 18 months old, we decided to try for a second child, as I did not want him to be an only child. One of the driving forces behind this was the fact my mom was an only child and hated it. She would recount stories from her childhood about how lonely she was and how much she disliked going on holiday with just her parents for company.

Another reason was that as we had immigrated, and we did not have any family close by. I knew my son would not grow up surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He would not know the joy of large family gatherings and ultimately, I did not want him to be alone one day.

Unfortunately, after another miscarriage and five failed IVF attempts, I had to accept that a second baby was not going to happen.

I had to face the fact that my son was going to be an only child.

I admit it was tough.

I worried my son was going to be on his own one day with no siblings for support.

I worried he would not get to experience the joy of a sibling relationship.

I worried he would hate being an only child as my mom had done.

My husband, on the other hand, was more pragmatic. He pointed out that we had tried and told me our son would be fine. Part of me knew this was true, but it did not stop me from feeling guilty.

Not being able to give my son a sibling is the one thing I feel most guilty about. I have a close relationship with my brother and sister. Whenever I see siblings playing together, I feel that painful pang of guilt. I know my son will never experience the close bond; you can only share with a sibling.

My son is now seven years old; he has never once asked for a sibling.

In fact, he has told us many times that there is no way he wants a brother or sister because apparently, this would mean:

  • He would have to share his toys.
  • He would not get us (his Dad and me) all to himself.
  • There would be a baby in the house crying all the time.

One day I will tell my son about how he was conceived and how we tried to give him a sibling. I try to focus on the positives, my son is happy, well adjusted, exceptionally bright, and has lots of friends who regularly come for play dates at our house.

As parents, we put way too much pressure on ourselves, we worry and feel guilty when we should not. And whilst I would not say I am entirely over all my guilt, it has eased. When I see his smile, hear his laugh or when we are dancing around the house together like crazy people, I am thankful for my little miracle.

I am married to Brandon and am the proud Mum of a beautiful son. My mission is to help busy parents navigate the critical milestones of their child’s life. Children are truly phenomenal and can achieve amazing things when given the opportunity to Play, Learn and Grow.

Dear Teachers,

I just want you to know, there are days when I want to give up on this whole “distance learning” thing.

There are days that I want to close my eyes and surrender—to let my kids plug themselves into Youtube or Xbox or whatever device they’d rather watch instead of doing schoolwork. Because seriously: Getting my 8 and 10-year-old boys to focus on school (while my gleefully unoccupied 5-year-old daughter frolics around the back yard belting out Frozen 2 songs) seems close to impossible.

But I don’t give up. You know why?

Because you don’t.

No, every school day since this whole “Shelter in Place” thing started, you’ve been there. In fact, I’ve mapped out our daily schedule based on what you’ve laid out for us: Zoom meetings in the morning; art in the afternoon; read-alouds at lunch. You give us someplace to “go.” Thank you for that.

I know it can’t be easy. For one, you’ve managed to get whole classes of kids—and their parents—proficient at Zoom. That alone is an accomplishment, but it’s not all you’ve done: Along with knowing how to navigate his Chromebook like a pro and type 54 words per minute, my second-grader can now put together a Powerpoint Presentation better than I can. That’s all you, Teacher. Thank you.

And don’t think we don’t realize how much time you’re spending on us. You’ve shot videos, sent lesson plans, hosted Zoom meetings, given advice, and offered extra help—even while some of you have your own children needing your attention, too (I’ve seen you calmly tending to your kids mid-Zoom, Fourth Grade Teacher, and I just want to say you’re amazing).

You’ve spent your nights reading and reviewing kids’ work—scouring endless pages of Common Core math problems, grammar sentences, essays and tests—even when you have your own families to care for.

You’ve dealt with us parents, answering what must be an onslaught of e-mails, despite the fact you’ve probably already addressed all said concerns in previous e-mails or Google Classroom posts. (Sorry about that. )

You’ve worked hard, even when you were tired. You’ve kept going, even when you were drained. You’ve navigated this strange remote learning world, even when you weren’t sure whether you were doing it right. (You are!)

Most importantly: You’ve shown up for my kids with the same loving-but-“Let’s get down to business” attitude they’ve known all school year—even as the weight (or loneliness) of working from home amid a pandemic has become so big you’ve probably felt like you can’t always carry it.

But you can.

I can.

And the kids certainly can.

So that’s why I keep going. Because how can I tell my kids that I can’t handle this when you’re handling it tenfold (24-fold, to be exact)?

How can I tell my 8-year-old I don’t have the energy to homeschool when you have the energy not only to corral a roomful of Zoomed pre-tweens into silence—but also to ride your bike past the home of EVERY SINGLE CHILD in the class just so you could give them a smile in person? (Seriously, thank you for that.)

How can I tell my 5-year-old I can’t give any more of myself when her preschool teacher just opened up her own back yard for scheduled, unlimited solo visits to her trampoline?

You, teachers, amaze me.

And while you may not be getting the hand-painted “Thank you” signs or live-streamed TV specials that are being given to the pandemic’s “front line” workers, you are just as valuable.

And so I want to take this opportunity to tell you:

You are our anchor.

You give us a routine when everything else is so enormously outside that routine.

You make things feel normal when everything else is so far from normal.

You keep us going.

Thank you, teachers, for everything you do. We love you.

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, join us in putting “Thank You Teachers!” signs in your window this week.

When it comes to starting a new family or adding a new member to your crew, parental leave often plays a big role in what those first few months look like for moms and dads. Will you go back to work at six weeks, 12 or not at all? Luckily, in recent years, there’s a growing number of companies that recognize the need for and the long-term benefits of offering meaningful parental leave options and benefits for new parents. We’re putting the spotlight on 10 companies doing exactly that. Keep reading to see who made our list.

Netflix

Pixaby

The television and movie streaming giant that brought you such binge-worthy credits as Stranger Things and The Good Place has some of the most flexible and generous paid parental leave in the country. Netflix allows parents to decide how much time off they need to care for and bond with their new baby; while the average leave time for parents is four to eight months, some employees take up to one year. Additionally, during their parental leave, employees can opt to work a flexible schedule, part-time, or not at all, while still receiving their full-time salary.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

The Seattle-based philanthropy known for its work in such sectors as global child mortality and U.S. postsecondary education is generous with its staff, too. Parents can take up to six months of continuous paid time off during the first year after the child's birth or adoptive placement. The Foundation also offers a $20,000 stipend to help defray childcare costs.

Reddit

The “front page of the Internet” is careful to recognize the many faces of parenthood, offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birth, adoptive, or foster parents (for both mothers and fathers). Birth mothers receive an additional four months of fully paid disability leave so they can physically recover from childbirth. These benefits can be tapped for up to one year after the arrival of a child and can be used incrementally as-needed.

Reddit’s office culture is attentive to the continuing needs of parents, too, with dedicated breastfeeding rooms, reimbursement of breast milk delivery services (such as Milk Stork), and a childcare stipend for use after the parent returns to work. Reddit partners with Cleo, a female-founded company that offers parents 24/7 support and resources about early childcare development, a phone hotline, lactation consulting, night doulas, and even estate planning. For those who are still in the family planning phase, Reddit provides adoption assistance and pays for egg freezing, fertility testing, and genetic testing. They have even curated a resource library that offers tips for all things related to welcoming a new baby.

Iron Workers Union

Jack Sem

The trade association with origins that go back to the 1890s is one of the first unions in the country to follow through on paid leave for its members. Pregnant mothers are eligible for up to six months of pre-term leave. Regardless of the length of leave taken before delivery, members are eligible for up to six weeks of paid leave after the birth of a child (with two additional weeks for Cesarean deliveries).

Everyone’s favorite rabbit hole for interests you didn’t even know you had is equally comprehensive with its perks for families. They provide on-site lending of children's books through BookTree, offer a one-year paid membership to Urbansitter, are dedicated to planning and hosting family-friendly events, and frequently bring in guest speakers who cover topics such as sleep training and estate planning. Pinterest also sponsors a “MyAmbassadors Team” that supports parents while they are on leave. Families trying to conceive can breathe easier knowing that fertility treatments are covered, including artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization.

H&M

While the popular international clothing company offers many of the same parental leave benefits as other businesses attentive to new families, it is unique in its benefits for part-time workers. Starting in 2019, all part-time employees receive six weeks of paid parental leave.

Etsy

Etsy has perfected its online platform for selling bespoke handmade goods—and they’re also pretty good at considering the varying financial and childcare needs of young families. One perk is a New Parent Support Credit, which allows new parents to trade in up to 14 weeks of their parental leave in exchange for a cash payment. This provides parents with more flexible childcare options as they transition back to work.

Estee Lauder

Bargain Moose

The nearly 75-year-old skincare, makeup, and hair care company has evolved to meet the needs of more families over the years. In addition to six to eight weeks of paid leave for mothers for recovery from childbirth and an additional 20 weeks of paid leave for bonding (available to both mothers and fathers); Estee Lauder sponsors a back-to-work transition program for parents of all genders and sexual orientations. They also grant up to $10,000 toward adoption expenses and up to $20,000 toward fertility treatments, as well as in-home childcare and eldercare at reduced rates.

Amazon

Raw Pixel

As the second-largest private employer in the United States, Amazon has come to meet the family leave needs of all employees: regardless of job title, birth mothers receive 20 weeks of paid leave, while fathers and adoptive parents receive six weeks of paid parental leave—all of which can be taken continuously or incrementally as-needed. The Leave Share program allows employees to "gift" their time to their partner, should their partner's employer not offer paid parental leave, and the Ramp Back program allows parents to work a flexible schedule for up to eight weeks after the birth or adoption of a child.

Speaking of adoption: employees can receive up to $5,000 to cover adoption and attorney fees, court costs and travel costs for single child adoption, or up to a combined maximum of $10,000 for a sibling adoption. And once nursing moms return to work, they can take advantage of Mothers' Rooms with hospital-grade breast pumps, locking doors, comfortable chairs, sinks, microwaves and refrigerators.

My Maternity Leave Wasn’t a Given, So Here’s How I Made It Work

With a nine-year-old and three-year-old, tablets and screen time have been a part of our household for years—and I wouldn’t have it any other way. While I thought I had it all figured out with the devices we were using, being introduced to an Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet was a game changer for me as a mom. From Amazon’s worry-free guarantee to their FreeTime Unlimited library with over 20,000 books, videos and apps, there is so much to love about this device. I only wish I had discovered it sooner.

Don’t miss this exclusive offer just for Red Tricycle readers. Purchase an Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet and save 20% when you use code REDTRI at checkout!

Reason #1 Why We Love This Tablet: Two-Year Worry Free Guarantee

When my son was born I quickly discovered what the phrase “we can’t have nice things” really means. Like a miniature version of Wreck-It-Ralph things just seem to break wherever he goes. Of course most things can be replaced, but that doesn’t mean you want to be constantly shelling out money just because you have kids at home. That’s why I instantly fell in love with the two-year worry-free guarantee that comes with every Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet.

If anything happens to the tablet, return it and Amazon will replace it. No questions asked. Simply return it and they’ll send you back a new one for free. If there’s anything I can appreciate as a mom, it’s having one less thing to worry about. I’ve got 99 mom problems, but the Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet definitely isn’t one.

Reason #2 Why We Love This Tablet: The Kid-Proof Case

If your toddler is anything like mine, things get dropped. A lot. While I often hesitate to hand over my own devices for screen time, I feel as fearless as Wonder Woman when he handles the Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet. Not only does it come with that worry free guarantee, but, unlike our previous tablets, it arrives out of the box already safe and snug in a Kid-Proof Case.

And, within minutes of turning on the tablet for the first time, sure enough it had slipped from my three-year-old’s hands and bounced to the floor. And when I say bounced, I mean bounced. Thanks to the Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet’s durable, lightweight and totally squishy case it landed without breaking, perfectly safe and ready for more play. Now I don’t even bat an eye or bother to utter the “be careful” warning I repeat each time he handles something remotely fragile because I know it’s perfectly safe even in his little (slippery) hands.

Reason #3 Why We Love This Tablet: One Year of Free Amazon Unlimited FreeTime

With our previous tablet a day never went by without my kids begging for a new game. It seemed like the battles and whining over earning a new app were endless. Amazon FreeTime Unlimited changed everything. Every game they could ask for is right there at their fingertips and for an entire year FreeTime is included with the purchase of an Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet. No extra downloads or “Mom I want a new game.”

Even after that first year, FreeTime Unlimited is just $2.99 per month for a single child for Prime Members—less than the cost of a typical single app purchase. The best part is: since we switched to the Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet I haven’t had a single demand for new apps. Now that’s priceless.

Reason #4 Why We Love This Tablet: Parental Controls

You shouldn’t need a degree in rocket science to make sure your kids are using their devices safely. The parental controls for the Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet make protecting my kids a breeze. I can easily adjust the age level and types of content I allow my kids to watch simply by toggling a few switches in the Amazon Parent Dashboard.

Reason #5 Why We Love This Tablet: Amazon Parent Dashboard

Besides creating profiles for each individual child set to age appropriate settings, the Amazon Parent Dashboard has several other features that make life as a parent in the digital age much easier. The Dashboard not only allows you to see how much time your kids have spent using the their tablet, but it also breaks it down into the types of content.

You can see how much of that one hour time limit a day (or whatever time you set it to) has been spent specifically on games, books and videos. The Dashboard also provides summaries and discussion points for certain apps so that you can engage your kids after they’ve been playing.

Starting at $99.99 on Amazon, check out all the Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablets to pick the best fit for your kids.

Diapers are an absolute essential when you have a baby, but they don’t come cheap. One state is looking to make this baby must-have a little more affordable for families by eliminating sales tax on diapers.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has just proposed a new plan to help families and women who may be struggling financially as part of his state budget.  The proposal would eliminate sales tax on items like diapers and menstrual products for five years.

The author of the legislation to implement tax-free diapers for infants and toddlers, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) praised Newsom’s endorsement of the plan saying, “This is something that will affect every single parent in California. That’s substantive and that’s meaningful.”

Governor Newsom’s wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom joined him at the budget presentation acknowledging that as a mom of four kids this issue was an important one. “We are fighting for a future where our daughters will be valued equally to our sons, a California where every single child, no matter the ZIP Code or the family that they’re born into will have the best possible start in life,” she said “And a California where every parent will have the support they need to build the best possible future for their children.”
