If Seattle’s rainy winter nights don’t scream “movie night” than we don’t know what does. So pop some corn and set the TV to stream, it’s time to watch a Seattle movie with the fam. From old school flicks to new releases, these 10 films will make your movie night epic. Lights, camera, action!

The One & Only Ivan

Disney

Based on Katherine Applegate's award-winning book by the same name, this sweet movie fictionalizes the real-life story of Ivan, the silverback gorilla who called Tacoma home. It’s possible you remember visiting Ivan at the B&I in Lakewood in the ‘80s or ‘90s. Or maybe you’ve seen his statue outside the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Even if you have, you’ll have a reason to visit and learn more about Ivan after watching this movie that reminds us about the importance of home.

Stream it on Disney+.

Harry and the Hendersons

Harry and the Hendersons is the classic story of a Seattle family and their “accidental” encounter with Sasquatch. We’re sure your kids will love it, whether you do a lot of camping or not. While you’re watching, keep an eye out for familiar sights in Wallingford, Ballard and Beacon Hill, where parts of the movie were filmed. Much has changed since this movie came out in 1987, but you'll recognize another timeless Washington spot while you watch—the Cascades.

The Neverending Story

Set in the fictional city of De Forest, Washington, The Neverending Story is a story within a story that will totally hook your kids. In the real world, Bastian Bux ducks into a bookstore to escape bullies. In the fantasy world, Atreyu works to saves his home world, Fatasia, from “The Nothing.” It’s a hero story the whole fam will love.

Stream it on amazon, $3.99

War Games

Delve into this movie about a high schooler who accidentally hacks into the U.S. Defense System at NORAD and ends up playing a high stakes game of nuclear tic-tac-toe with a computer. Although NORAD is actually under a mountain in Colorado Springs, in this movie it’s on a set built in Newhalem off route 20 in the north Cascades. You might also recognize the Pierce County Steilacoom ferry heading to Anderson Island (a.k.a Goose Island).

Stream it on amazon, $3.99

Free Willy

A touching tale about a troubled boy and a captive orca whale, Free Willy is a total crowd pleaser that’ll make you want to go whale watching this weekend. All the action takes place at the fictional Northwest Adventure Park in Seattle, but much of this classic ‘90s tale was filmed in Astoria, Oregon, site of another fam fave, The Goonies.

Stream it on amazon, $3.99

Overboard (2018)

The remake of this ‘80s classic stars Edmonds native Anna Faris and so much Seahawks gear. Gather your mini twelves and count the Seahawks shirts, flags and jerseys as you watch this switch-a-roo comedy that takes place in the Pacific Northwest. It’s the story of single mom, Kate Sullivan and her elaborate ruse to convince her yacht-owning boss (now suffering from amnesia) that they’re married.

Stream it on amazon, $3.99

Agent Cody Banks

The first in this kid movie franchise, Agent Cody Banks is the zany spy thriller every kiddo dreams of. The movie packs some serious ‘90s teen star power (Frankie Muniz and Hillary Duff star). It tells the story of Seattle high school student, Cody Banks’ undercover mission to save—you guessed it—the world.

Stream it on amazon, $3.99

Sleepless in Seattle

It’s hard to have a list of movies set in Seattle without adding this classic. From the houseboat on Lake Union to the Athenian Restaurant at Pike Street to Alki Beach, this movie hits all the Seattle high notes and then some. Long story short, if you want a feel-good movie the whole family can watch, you’re in good hands with this PG-rated flick.

Stream it on amazon, $3.99

Practical Magic

A family curse and an untimely death are the backstory of this magical movie that was filmed in Coupeville on Whidbey Island. As you watch the two witchy sisters work through their past and reconcile their love lives (sans spells), you might notice familiar Coupeville sights, like the (recently closed) Knead & Feed bakery that served as the potion shop in town. This is probably one to save for those tween years though—it’s rated PG-13.

Stream it on amazon, $3.99

10 Things I Hate About You

Another one to save for those sooner-than-you-think tween years (it’s also PG-13), writing credit for this ‘90s teen drama goes to Shakespeare. It’s a modern adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew, and it's packed with easily recognizable Seattle spots. Families will recognize Queen Anne’s Kerry Park, the Aurora Bridge, Lake Union and Gas Works Park as they watch the film. The famed Fremont Troll also makes an appearance. And if you’re wondering about Padua High School—it’s actually historic Stadium High School in Tacoma.

“Momsomnia” is a real thing. New research from online retailer Zulily shows that 62% of moms are up at least one time a night, most often between the hours of 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Moms are worrying about the world, planning for the unknown and needing a no-judgement zone.

woman in bed on computer

Zulily unveiled a list of the Top 10 Sleepless States for Moms in America based on late-night social media listening and found that while the golden state took the top spot, moms are up at night from coast to coast:

  • California
  • Texas
  • Florida
  • New York
  • Illinois
  • Arizona
  • Ohio
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Washington

To give moms a new way to spend their sleepless hours, Zulily is launching The Late Night Shop for Mom – a month-long shopping event that will offer free shipping on orders placed between 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. PT on orders $35+ on curated collections refreshed each week, featuring must-have items that offer humor, comfort and a sense of calm during trying times.

While most new moms are up late adapting to new sleep and meal schedules with baby, the survey data shows there’s more on mom’s mind than a late-night snuggle session. Nearly a quarter of moms say worrying about the world keeps them up at night which is higher than the percent of moms who say they’re up late at night to care for their children or planning for the future. 38 percent of Moms say they feel judged by other parents for their parenting decisions, which could be contributing to their overall mental load. Nearly one-third of moms say they pass the time late at night by doing something online like shopping online, browsing social media or checking email.

“Mom has the weight of the world on her shoulders, so we wanted to learn more about what she’s worried about, what she needs and how we can help lighten her load,” said Lindsay Reynolds, Zulily’s family shopping and trends expert. “Our research shows that moms are actively looking for products for her children and her home that help create a sense of calm, add a dose of daily humor, and help create experiences that she feels her family may be lacking right now. We’re giving new moms special savings and curated shopping events designed to provide a fun way to spend those sleepless hours shopping daily deals in our Late Night Shop for Mom.”

The research suggests that the state of society is not only causing moms to lose out on sleep, but it’s impacting what she’s shopping for and why.

  • Fashion Micro Moments: 45 percent of moms say that dressing their baby up in special occasion dresses or cute outfits impacts their own mood, citing feelings of happiness, relief as well as a sense of control and return to normalcy. Zulily offers unique brands like Milkbarn, which are perfect for dressing up baby for at-home photoshoots.
  • Mom Memes to Cope: The majority of moms say that humor is important in navigating the pain points of parenthood. Moms say that sharing humor and memes allow them to feel connected with other parents and allows them to express how they feel. Brands like Tesa Babe offer funny apparel to make the family smile.
  • Craving Calm at Home: Almost half of moms say their home could benefit from a greater sense of calm. What’s more, moms with babies and children under 5 are more likely to say their children are impacted by current environmental stress. That’s why Zulily offers soothing tools and toys from Calisson Toys, official distributor of Sophie la Girafe brand in the U.S. and Kushies alongside apparel like JoJo Maman Bébé.
  • Mother Nature Rules: Moms are turning to the woods for baby inspiration, with 33 percent saying an outdoor motif is most likely to apply to their baby’s life indoors. 22 percent say the sea and beach are their source of inspiration. 30 percent of moms are also turning to cool color shades (gray, blue, green) in nurseries, which studies have indicated can have a calming effect on children. Parents can turn to organic apparel from Oliver & Rain to swaddle their little ones in nature-inspired garb.

Zulily’s Late Night Shop for Mom launches on Sept. 17, 2020, with weekly themed events going live at 2 a.m. each week through Oct. 14, 2020. The shop will feature nursery décor, kid’s clothes, baby toys, and more at up to 70 percent off.

Survey Looks into Challenges Moms are Facing Due to Extended Working from Home

This Study Shows the Stress Working Parents Face Could Actually Cost Them Their Jobs

New Study Reveals How Praise Affects Students’ Behavior

If your family is anything like mine, bedtime can be a nightmare. Something that was supposed to be a calm and relaxing ritual turned into World War III every night between my five-year-old daughter and me. Some nights it was so bad I’d give in and let her stay up until she passed out doing whatever activity caught her attention that night—even if that meant she was going to bed at midnight and had to be back up at 7 a.m. for pre-K the next morning.

Something had to give, which is what sent me searching for new bedtime strategies. Here are some tips and tricks I picked up along the way. Hopefully, they’ll help preserve your sanity as well.

I Had Tried Everything

I’m not exaggerating when I say I tried pretty much every strategy in the book to get my older daughter to go to bed at the same time every night.

  • Warm baths
  • Cool baths
  • Lavender essential oils
  • Screen time
  • No screen time
  • Lullabies
  • Bedtime stories
  • Quiet rooms
  • White noise
  • Blackout curtains
  • Nightlights

And that’s just part of the list. I don’t expect too much from my younger daughter—she’s five months old and sleeps most of the day anyway, but my older, a five years, should be getting between 10 and 13 hours of sleep every night. At most, she was getting six to seven hours, which led to epic tantrums during the following days.

Here’s what I came up with, after many sleepless months of trial and error.

1. Stay Active During the Day

Even on school days when she’s active all day long, bedtime was a nightmare. That was in large part because we’d come home, do homework and plop down in front of a screen for the rest of the day while I finished my writing work.

Don’t do this. Learn from my pain and the bags under my eyes so big that I’m thinking of starting a designer luggage line.

Stay active as much as possible during the day. One of the most natural changes we made was getting outside in the afternoons. I’d throw my laptop in my bag, put the baby in her stroller and walk to the local playground to let my little monster burn through some of that energy. While it isn’t the most efficient way for me to work, it helped her get rid of some of that energy she’d built up throughout the day and made bedtime a little bit easier.

2. Set a Routine—and Stick to It

Experts have been telling us for years that our little ones benefit from a sold structure in their lives, but most of us still try to fly by the seat of our pants and that goes double for bedtime. We’d get wrapped up in our little worlds and by the time we realized it was time for bed, we were all too busy to keep up with a routine. That led to a lot of fights and something had to give.

The second change I made was to set up a semi-strict bedtime routine. I even set alerts on my phone to remind me when it was time to shut off the screens, take a bath and wind down for bed.

This strategy won’t work for everyone—parents of children with special needs may need a more flexible routine to accommodate their child’s tastes—but a comprehensive method can help get your little ones into the habit of going to bed at the same time every day without a fight.

3. Ditch the Screens Before Bed

This rule shouldn’t apply only to your children—it should be a household guideline. We’re all attached to our mobile devices and our screens, but the blue light they generate can disrupt your circadian rhythms and make it harder for you to fall asleep. Studies have shown LEDs suppress delta waves, the brainwaves that induce sleep.

Set a timer and shut off all screens—phones, tablets, computers and televisions—one to two hours before bedtime. As part of your consistent routine, this step can help reduce those bedtime battles. It might lead to some other squabbles—especially if your little ones are enthralled with what they’re doing at the moment—but in general, it will help make sleep come easier.

4. Customize Bedtime for Your Child

I had to learn this lesson the hard way. Hundreds of websites offer routine templates and step-by-step help to you put your little ones to bed—but there’s no guarantee the solution that works like a charm for one family will work in your household. Take the time to build your routine and customize it for each child.

Remember that massive list of things I tried? I ended up having to choose a small handful of things that worked best for my older daughter. In her case, it was limiting screen time, coupled with a warm bath and a bedtime story to help her slow down at the end of the night. When my younger daughter gets a little older, I will have to create a custom bedtime routine for her as well.

5. Success Requires Patience

It takes weeks to form a new habit, but constant repetition helps rewrite the pathways in your brain until an activity becomes second nature. Be patient with your children and with yourself. Sleep deprivation is a hell of a drug, but if you can be patient for a few weeks, you may not have to worry about bedtime battles ever again.

If you’re the exhausted parent of a sleepless baby, you’ve likely had your eye on the Tesla of baby sleep aids, a.k.a., the SNOO smart bassinet. If hefty price tag probably pumped the breaks on that idea, but you’re desperate for some shuteye, here’s how to rent a SNOO smart bassinet.

Created by Dr. Harvey Karp, author of the best-selling book The Happiest Baby on the Block, the SNOO smart bassinet promises to soothe your baby to sleep using the same tried and true methods in Karp’s book—minus the need for your aching arms. The bassinet will respond to a baby’s cries with motion and white noise to help them get the back to sleep without the need for parents to get out of bed.

This miracle device also comes at the  rather steep price of nearly $1,300 dollars. While many new parents will do just about anything to get some sleep, not everyone can afford it. Luckily, you can now rent a SNOO smart bassinet so you can catch some zzz’s without sacrificing their college fund in the process!

For just $4.90 per day, your whole family can finally get some much needed sleep when you rent a SNOO. A one-month minimum rental is required, but with free shipping both ways it’s a pretty good deal to help save you from becoming a complete mombie.

For a limited time you can even secure the a special offer of just $3.50 per day for the first month. In other words, skip your daily latte and you’ll earn the sweet reward of sleep instead. The offer is good on orders from now until Jan. 31, but you can order now and delay delivery until you need it, if your future fussy sleeper is still on the way.

After a long journey, Gabrielle Union is finally a mom. The actress welcomed a daughter on Nov. 7 with her husband Dwayne Wade. Her birth announcement is so moving, especially given her fraught journey to parenthood.

Union has spoken openly about her fertility struggles. The new mom, now 46, suffered multiple miscarriages on her road to becoming a mommy. While appearing on Dr. Oz, she revealed that she’s had eight or nine miscarriages, but has “lost track” of the total number.

The rocky road to parenting didn’t end there. In her book We’re Going to Need More Wine: Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and True, the actress candidly wrote about the miscarriages as well as her failed IVF attempts.

The now-new mama told People in 2017, “For so many women, and not just women in the spotlight, people feel very entitled to know, ‘Do you want kids?'” She went on to add, “A lot of people, especially people that have fertility issues, just say ‘no’ because that’s a lot easier than being honest about whatever is actually going on. People mean so well, but they have no idea the harm or frustration it can cause.”

After more than their fair share of disappointments Union and Wade tried surrogacy—and clearly it was a success! In her sweet IG announcement Union writes, “We are sleepless and delirious but so excited to share that our miracle baby arrived last night via surrogate and 11/7 will forever be etched in our hearts as the most loveliest of all the lovely days.”

Aww. Congrats to the new parents!

Pregnancy Skin Care: The Good, The Bad and The Downright Weird

Hooray, you’ve got a little web-footer on the way! Despite the morning sickness, impending stretch marks and that being sleepless in Seattle will soon hold new meaning for you, there’s lots to love about this time. And even more to love about doing it in Seattle. Here are 11 reasons the Emerald City is the best place around to grow your bump!

photo: Sarah Barnard

1. The rain. It’s not often Seattleites count the rain as an asset, lush greenery and double rainbows aside. But when you haven’t outed your bump, the requisite rain gear Seattleites don 9 months of the year is an ingeniously inconspicuous way to keep things on the DL ’til you’re ready to reveal the Big News. Hiding in plain sight doesn’t get any easier than this!

photo: Tonya Todd

2. Babymoon bonanza. When it comes to babymoons, Seattle’s got a serious corner on the market. Between the San Juan Islands, Hood Canal and Lake Chelan, we’ve got gorgeous babymoon destinations close to home that others have to board a plane to enjoy. Take one while you can!

photo: Colleen Murray

3. Outdoor farmer’s markets. Local, sustainable, organic. Consider these the everyday perks of Seattle’s bountiful farmer’s market scene. But when you’re eating for two, the real cincher is the open-air factor. Eating fresh without overloading your super sensitive nose? Yes, please!

photo: Melinda Wong

4. Cool summers. Pregnancy is just one of those times that Seattle’s cooler-than-most summers come in handy. 75 degrees with a slight breeze off the Sound beats just about any other day, anywhere. Plus it’s just what the OB ordered for your ankles!

photo: FIT4MOM West Seattle

5. Excellent exercise. You were active before your pregnancy and a bun in the oven isn’t about to slow you down. Thankfully, Seattle’s fitness scene can keep pace with you (and baby-to-be!). There are plenty of classes to keep you active in the prenatal stages, and to help you reconnect with your skinny jeans once baby arrives, too!

photo: Donna Ryan

6. Fab photo shot spots. Documenting your bump and its progress is a definite must on the pregnancy checklist. Where to do it is not so easy to decide. Among the brightly blooming rhodies in the Arboretum? Along Alki with a full-blown view of the city as a backdrop? Amid the giant sculptures and greenery of the Olympic Sculpture Park? Clearly Seattle’s got tons of picture perfect options for your cute little bump’s first photo shoot. And you thought waiting for a sunny day would be the hard part of this one!

photo: Sasha Reiko

7. Runway-ready bumps. Styling your belly in Seattle is easy peasy and thankfully doesn’t require flannel anymore! You and your peanut can pick up hot mama-to-be fashions at Village Maternity in the U District so you can look your best around town. It’s true what they say, the clothes really do make the belly!

photo: Village Maternity’s Facebook page

8. Food, glorious food. If those aggressive late night cravings for ice cream and pickles haven’t kicked in yet, they will. Lucky for you (and whoever’s making the midnight runs) there are plenty of neighborhood ice cream shops to satisfy your sweet tooth. Between the creative flavor combos at Molly Moon’s, Full Tilt and Husky Deli, you’re sure to find the perfect scoop. And if you need a side of pickles to go with that, order up some gewürzgurken at Feierabend in South Lake Union. Mission complete!

photo: Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream Facebook page

9. Delicious deliveries. It’s hard work being pregnant! Between those practically narcoleptic moments when you need a nap now and that super smeller you developed sometime in the first trimester, cooking sometimes needs to take a backseat. Enter local meal delivery services that equal nourishment for you and your bump. Go ahead, take that nap you really need!

photo: Melinda Wong

10. Baby-safe pedis. There comes a point in any pregnancy where you won’t be able to see your toes anymore, let alone polish them. When that time comes, Julep can help. Their polishes are safe for moms-in-the-making so you can sit back and relax while your toes get pretty.

photo: Kristy S. via Yelp

11. Zulily’s sample sale. It happens here once a year. And it rocks! With finds for now and after baby arrives, it can’t can’t be beat… if crowds don’t scare you.

Why do YOU think it’s great to be pregnant in Seattle? Tell us in the Comments!

“I scream, you scream!” The ice cream season may have hit Seattle a bit early this year, but since July is National Ice Cream Month, it deserves a little extra celebration. We couldn’t think of a better way to cheer for ice cream than by booking passage on the Seattle Ferry Sunday Ice Cream Cruise. It’s a little bit sightseeing, a little bit maritime history and a whole lot of souped-up floats and ice cream goodies to help you stay cool on a hot day. Read on for the scoop.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

Ship Shape
Captain Larry Kezner has been navigating the waters of Lake Union on the Sunday Ice Cream Cruise for over 15 years. During this time, slurping chocolate root beer floats aboard the M/V Freemont Avenue has gained a kind of kitsch status reserved for funky only-in-Seattle activities, like visiting bridge trolls and leaving gooey somethings behind on the gum wall. So whether you’re looking for a new family adventure, have some guests in from out of town or just want an excuse to eat ice cream (on the water!), this is definitely the place to do it.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

Bon Voyage!
The Sunday Ice Cream Cruise boards right outside of MOHAI on Lake Union. You can’t miss the colorful balloons that mark the dock entrance. And on weekends families can expect to find plenty of free parking spots in the lot west of the lake. Be sure to get there on the earlier side to snag one, and plan a few extra minutes of walking time as the footbridge that connects the two is currently closed.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

During the 45-minute cruise around the lake, Captain Larry treats passengers to enticing little tidbits about some iconic Seattle sights, like Gas Works park, Dale Chihuly’s studio and of course, the Sleepless in Seattle houseboat. Whether you’ve seen them before or are checking out these well-known hot spots for the first time, enjoying them atop this passenger ferry, root beer float in hand, is all part of the fun. As is the ice cream served inside. The ship’s interior is reminiscent of an old soda shop, with colorful half-moon tables and painted chairs lining the walls, and what looks like antique stained glass letting in light from above. Chess and checkers pieces are set up on painted boards all set to play, so you and your sidekick can have a wicked match while cruising around Lake Union.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

Sweet Treats
As for cool treats, they serve up plenty once the ship leaves the dock. The chocolate root beer float is what they’re known for, but you can get a traditional one too, as well as an orange dreamsicle or strawberry cream just like grandma used to make. There are plenty of ice cream truck faves for the Littles to choose from (think drumsticks and ice cream sammies), in case fizzy soda tickles too much. And the prices won’t break the bank. Plan to spend between $2-$4 for each treat.

Stay and Play
We love any activity that maximizes playtime and this cruise is poised to do that. There’s tons to see and do before or after your trip, so you can make a day of it. A visit to MOHAI is a no-brainer (and not just because of the A/C). They’ve got some mighty cool exhibits for the kidlets to explore while you chill out. Or check out the boats on loan from the Center for Wooden Boats. Each weekend between 11 a.m.-2 p.m. they bring out about ten beautifully crafted wooden boats for passers-by to test out on the South Lake Union Boat Pond ($5 suggested donation). Race ‘em, time ‘em, let them float leisurely along. Any way your littlest mate plays will be time well spent on the water. The spray park at Lake Union Park is another splashtastic way to spend a sunny day here. Pack a swimsuit and some sunscreen in the diaper bag for this added maritime adventure.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

Good to Know:
1. The cruise is walk-on only, which makes it an easy spur-of-the-moment Sunday family adventure.

2. It’s cash or check only for both passage and frozen goodies, so bring some green on this trip.

3. If you can’t make the Sunday cruise, Captain Larry sets sail on Fridays and Saturdays too, for a 60-minute Lake Union and Portage Bay cruise that’s a little different from the Sunday sundae cruise.

4. BYO food gets a green light from Captain Larry. Pack a lunch or a light snack to level out the blood sugars after all that yummy ice cream.

If you can’t remember the last time you had a spontaneous family adventure or (gasp!) an unplanned Saturday afternoon, it’s time to shake things up a bit. No need to leave town, just put on your Seattle uniform (fleece jacket and Dansko clogs or Chaco sandals… bonus points for Mariners, Huskies, Seahawks or Sounders gear) and grab the gang. It’s time to act like a tourist for the day and visit (or revisit) our favorite touristy Seattle hot spots.

Kayaking Kids

Kayak Lake Union
What could be more tourist-y than kayaking past the houseboat from “Sleepless in Seattle?” Well, maybe kayaking Lake Union, latte in hand (or between your knees more likely), with sea planes overhead, Gasworks Park glittering in the background and a post-paddle snack awaiting you at Ivar's. Kids under 18 will need to paddle with you in a double kayak, but all the more fun. They can be your First Mate and scout out your next landing spot as you cross to the other shore. (Family race, anyone?). Even if you skip the kayaking, and opt for kite flying on the top of the enormous hill at Gasworks, Lake Union is not to be missed on your tourist-y day out. It’s easy to get to, has iconic Seattle skyline views and is the perfect jumping off point for adventures in the Arboretum (to the west) or the Locks (to the east).

After welcoming a newborn, it doesn’t take long for you to realize that the mantra “sleep like a baby” is one big myth. Still, there are products and hacks that can help! From bedtime rituals to noise making apps, here’s how to help baby (and yourself) get some serious zzz’s.

1. Learn to swaddle (or faux swaddle).
Soon after baby is born, a nurse whisks her away and wraps her perfectly and snuggly in a blanket like a burrito. Once you’re home, re-swaddling a Houdini baby in two seconds flat (like the nurse) at 3 a.m. is not easy. Enter Swaddle Strap, a swaddle blanket that velcroes around baby’s arms. No folding, tucking or tightening needed.

Photo: Anna & Eve via Facebook

2. Hang blackout shades.
Those block-out-all-semblance-of-daytime curtains worked for you in college when you were trying to take a disco nap. And it will work again for your sleepless babe. Look for something that is lined with black polyester, like these cordless roman shades from Pottery Barn Kids. Word to the wise: Don’t hang all-black curtains, lest you want the nursery to resemble a vampire lair.

3. Add a humidifier.
For nights when kiddo is sick, a humidifier is a must-have (though you really can use them whenever). How it works: A humidifier boosts a room’s humidity, which can relieve congestion, chapped lips, and dry skin — all reasons your cherub wakes up in a panic. One that’s freakin’ adorable with high humidity output is this one by Sunpentown.

4. Give baby a massage.
The proof is in the pudding. Research says that infant massage promotes better sleep. If you’ve never given your bambino a pre-slumber rub down, start with an “I Love U” tummy massage. Simply trace the letter I down your baby’s left side. Then trace an L, starting under her arm on the right side and going across the belly along the base of her ribs from her right side to her left. Next trace a U, stroking from high on the baby’s right side, down and around the navel, and up the left side.

5. Download an app.
Rain, Rain is a free iPhone app that comes with 25 different rain sounds, including “downpour” and “rain on a tent.” Warning: You might fall asleep before baby! If one baby sleep app isn’t enough, add the Sleep Pillow Baby app to the mix. The new parent fave features some of the most out there lullabies and ambient sounds (think: hypnotic Frère Jacques remixes and soothing night owl hoots).

6. Get a lovey.
If lights out sends baby into a tizzy, Cloud B’s Twilight Turtle might do the trick. This plush toy’s shell transforms a dark room from scary to starry, by projecting real constellations onto bedroom ceilings and walls. Talk about sleeping under the stars!

7. Paint (or repaint) walls.
Check the shade of the nursery’s walls. Reds, oranges and yellows are stimulating and can keep baby up. Chillaxing shades include blues, green and neutrals.

8. Warm those wipes!
It may seem like one of those vanity items you gratuitously add to your registry, but a wipe warmer (like this space-saving variety) can actually make a difference between baby falling back to sleep after a diaper change and, well, not. Let’s put it in perspective, wouldn’t you be wide awake if you wiped your tush in the middle of the night with a cold, wet wipe?
