If you’ve ever asked your kids “How was your day?” and received what sounds like a grunt or the ever-popular “OK,” you’re not alone. Instead of letting family chats fall to the wayside, consider using conversation starters for kids during your next family dinner. Sure, gathering everyone for a meal might seem impossible, but it’s more important than ever; studies have shown that families that eat together often have healthier diets, increased communication, and overall emotional stability.

And, engaging your kids in conversation has other huge benefits. It helps them learn important social skills, boosts vocabulary, raises self-esteem (especially when you listen to their responses), and could lead to them opening up about things that might be bothering them. So, if you’ve come this far, congrats! The next step? Figuring out what to talk about at the table. That’s where our fun conversation starters for kids come in handy.

How to Use Conversation Starters

Time your questions.

If your kid is hungry, tired, or both, it might not be the best time to engage in elaborate table talk. Use conversation starters with kids when you aren’t rushing to get to practice, there isn’t homework to be finished, and everyone is in a good mood.

Listen to their answers.

So, their curiosity is piqued, and they’re thinking hard about what to say. You need to be present in the moment and listen. Kids’ self-esteem gets a boost when they know their parents are listening.

Don’t forget to ask open-ended questions.

Consider using conversation starters for kids that require more than yes or no answers. If kids (or anyone) have a chance to elaborate on their answers, that can open the door to more interesting conversations.

Kiddo’s Having Trouble Tying Their Shoes? Try This!

Adidas & Disney Teamed Up on Monsters Inc. Shoes & They’re Even Earth-Friendly

It’s only been a short period of time that I’ve stood beside Kanen in this autism journey—6 months ago to be exact is when I heard the official words that changed my world. I don’t know what it is about those words that find a way into a mother’s soul and crushes her spirt but they do. I think mainly because we know this world is not designed for different. It’s simply not made for our child.

During the grieving process you might find your self slipping into the darkness that surrounds any diagnosis. Praying for a light at the end of the tunnel. Before autism changed my world, I was motivated. I was selfish. I was everything you would expect a young 25 year old girl to be. And overnight I knew I had to grow up far beyond the years of my peers.

It was almost instantly that I stopped relating to girls’ night out or “Sunday Funday’s.” While my friends were out living their best lives, my life suddenly felt like I was parachuted into the middle of a dark jungle, expected to walk down a path I’ve never seen before. With no directions, no map, no flashlight, and definitely no tour guide.

Along the voyage I learned I wasn’t alone. I found other mom’s in the dark. And they did something remarkable. Life changing even. They took a seat right beside me. Maybe they sat for only a moment, maybe it’s was for a few days, or a week, or a month. “I will sit in the dark with you, for as long as you need. Whenever you need” they said.

I’ve learned life will throw you curveballs you were never prepared to bat up for. And when they hit they’ll leave bruises that might take a lifetime to heal. It’s okay to cry, be angry, mad, sad, frustrated, and confused. To feel like you’re lost in the dark. Feel all the feels, you’re human too, remember that. But just know you’re never alone. I’ll always be here to take a seat with you. For as long as you need or whenever you need.

Samira is a 25 year old single mom to a 2 year old son Kanen Arley. Her son Kanen was diagnosed with severe non-verbal autism in September of 2020, which inspired her to start sharing their journey through My Charming Arley on Facebook and Samirasstella on Instagram.

Traveling with kids is a ton of work, especially when you have to plan for all the extra gear. Luckily, if you have booster-age kiddos, there’s a new seat in town––and it’s a game changer.

mifold has been around for years, but the new Comfort Grab-and-Go booster ($34.99) next level. Like the original, it’s ten times smaller than regular car boosters but the new version offers a seat cushion that is three times thicker––super important for long car rides.

The mifold is great for traveling abroad, ride-hailing, carpooling and pretty much anytime you don’t want to lug a bulky booster seat with you. The compact size makes it ideal for slipping in a purse, backpack, luggage or even your glove box. Bonus? It makes fitting three kiddos in the backseat a breeze!

The new Comfort Grab-and-Go booster is available on mifold.com or on Amazon in three colors: charcoal gray, ocean blue and royal purple.

When you step on that pointy little LEGO brick hiding in plain sight on the living room floor, there are likely a ton of expletives you can conjure up to shout out. But as a parent you want to censor little listeners from those four-letter words. Ashton Kutcher has a clever parenting hack to avoid saying bad words and you might want to break it out the next time you encounter a LEGO.

Dad of two, Kutcher recently revealed his interesting trick for preventing those unsavory words from slipping out––he self-censors. As the actor demonstrated to The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, he leaves a pause in the sentence where an expletive might be.

He rolled out his made-for-tv trick and Fallon instantly picked up on it, exclaiming “I love that you just censored yourself. That’s amazing. No one’s ever done that!” And of course Ashton responded, “I have children.”

They then proceed to have a completely self-censored, expletive-filled conversation and it’s gold. Watch it a few times and you’ll be able to pick up the hack yourself… or just enjoy the laughs.

Safety is critical when it comes to screen time for kids. Knowing what my kids are watching and how they’re spending their time on devices and online is a big priority for me as a parent. Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablets; Amazon Parent Dashboard, as I’ve recently discovered, is the perfect solution to giving me peace of mind as I navigate how to parent in the digital world.

Parental Controls: Why It Works for Our Family

As my 9-year-old daughter inches closer to the tween years, she is increasingly looking for more independence, which I want to give her as much as possible. But when it comes to freedom on the internet I still want to be in control of what she can and can’t access. Using the Parent Dashboard for the Amazon Kids Edition tablet I can allow her the freedom she wants without having to worry about if she’s accessing something that isn’t age appropriate.

How I Use the Parental Controls

The Settings menu under the Amazon Parent Dashboard allows me to adjust the age filter so that I know my kids are only able to access age-appropriate content within Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, including apps, books, movies and TV shows. I can also use the settings to modify the built-in web browser, which can either be turned off entirely or I can choose the specific sites that my kids can have access to. With the settings controls I don’t have to worry about in-app purchases slipping by me either, as I can turn that function off.

Best of all, the options are all listed simply and only require a slider switch to adjust, which means it doesn’t take more than a few seconds to set up these safety features or change them as I see fit.

Have More Than One Kid? Use Child Profiles on Your Amazon Fire Kids Edition Tablet

With two kids at home of very different ages, it’s important to me that their screen time is tailored to their individual needs. Parents can use the Amazon Parent Dashboard to set up individual profiles for up to four kids per tablet. With a quick swipe I can easily change the profile in use to make sure that my kids are using the device appropriately. I love knowing that what my three-year-old sees is not the same as what my nine-year-old sees.

photo: Amazon

Activity Reports: How I Keep Up with Their Screen Time

With the Amazon Kids Edition tablet I know that everything my kids have access to is safe and age-appropriate, but I still like to know exactly how they are spending their allotted screen time. The Parent Dashboard provides activity reports that breakdown how my kids spend their time in specific categories including apps, books, videos, web browsing, music and more.

Discussion Cards: A Cool Way to Connect with My Kids

Several of the apps included in Amazon FreeTime Unlimited have discussion cards that can easily be accessed through the Parent Dashboard simply by taping on the app name. I can then see a quick summary of the game my daughter is into so I know what it’s all about. Amazon’s Parent Dashboard even provides me a list of questions and talking points so that I can have an actual conversation with my kids about what they’ve been playing, which makes me look like I’m super in-the-know about their games!

Time Limits

It’s easy to lose track of time when you get sucked into a movie or a really exciting game, but luckily Amazon’s Kids Edition tablet’s Parent Dashboard gives me a lot of options when it comes to setting screen time limits. Using the Parent Dashboard I can designate time limits for daily use, which can be set up differently for weekdays versus weekends, when homework is done and there’s a little more free time. Parents can also set up a specific time when the device will wake up and go to sleep, so I don’t have to worry about my kids sneaking in any extra screen time when they should be in bed sleeping.

photo: Shahrzad Warkentin

Educational Goals

While there are plenty of games and activities that are simply for fun, many of the apps and books available in FreeTime are educational. To ensure that screen time is quality time I can use the time limit controls to set educational goals. For example I might set a goal for my kids to read books for half an hour each day. I can also take this function one step further and set a requirement to meet those educational goals before my kids can access the content that’s purely for fun and entertainment.

The Amazon Parent Dashboard can be accessed through a free app on your smartphone or via desktop computer through your Amazon account.

I'm a Los Angeles native taking on the world with my husband, two adventure-loving tots and our dog and hamster. I have worked in digital media since 2009 and written for What To Expect and Care.com among others. Pre-kids I was a film and television writer with work featured on Nickelodeon.

For the last decade, I battled through the trenches of the advertising industry as a copywriter. But if the world was an airport, I was a traveler at baggage claim. Every so often, I’d see a bag that looked like mine. Sometimes, I’d even pull it off the carousel. Then, I’d quickly realize that I’d made a mistake, put it back and wait for another rotation.

Or, maybe a more accurate description would be that my career was a road trip and jobs were stops on the way to an unknown destination. Some were nice; I’d think, “Wow, I could stay here.” But inevitably, the charm would wear off.  Slipping away with a cliché “It’s not you … it’s me,” I’d hop in my convertible, put on my sunglasses and drive off, watching the town disappear in the rear view mirror.

This is not to say I’ve had a reckless career. Quite the opposite. I did things by the book. Went to college. Got an internship. Then a job. Made moves. I continued climbing until—just before turning 30—I landed a senior-level position. Shortly after, there were talks of me heading up a new division with a promotion to Associate Creative Director.

So, what happened?

Well, something didn’t feel right. You see, I have a blog that evolved from hobby to side hustle over the last two years. The more my career grew, the more my blog suffered. I’d go weeks without fresh content. My audience plateaued. Work buried me, leaving no spare time. And, while I loved being a copywriter, I felt I was at a crossroads and needed to make a decision – fast. Just like that, I walked away from my career to blog full-time. That was two months ago.

Here are three hard lessons I’ve learned since then.

1. People aren’t going to get it.

Being a professional blogger is 2019’s version of “I’m going to Hollywood!” People look at you with pity. The nicer ones pretend to be supportive, even asking how they can subscribe (they mysteriously never do). I get it. Really, I do. It’s hard to understand what we don’t understand.

These reactions used to bother me, because in advertising, you go back to the drawing board when your idea falls flat with others. In the blogger world? If others don’t get it, you’re onto something new – and that is gold in an oversaturated space. So, learn to be okay with not being understood.

2. No one is looking out for you.

Listen. Once you go out on your own and the 1st and 15th of the month are no longer synonymous with pay day, you start to miss the comfort of that old paycheck. Especially when you have to follow up on past-due invoices.

As a blogger, I work 70+ hours/week. If I don’t hustle, I can’t pay my bills. Because of that, I went on a stretch where I accepted unsustainable amounts of work. Don’t do it. Establish boundaries. Say no. Set realistic deadlines. Tell companies – no matter who they are – that you’re booked. If you’re drained, you can’t represent yourself or clients well. The balance between “Rise and grind – business never sleeps!” and “Dang, girl, you need rest” is hard to find, y’all.

3. What I thought mattered, didn’t.

Bloggers know there is money to be made. Naturally, they want it. Even within my plus size blogging niche, plenty of people are going after the same collabs/audience/budgets. That reality scared me. Why would anyone choose me when other bloggers have more followers, experience and popularity within the community? Face palm.

Let’s make this clear: Numbers do not equal sales. Or ROI. And while popularity is nice, fellow bloggers are not usually your target. Stop comparing. Instead, learn who your audience is and what drives them to buy.

There is no magic number where you’ll have “made it.” At 500,000 followers, you’ll still have to work to source quality opportunities. It pays (quite literally) to be about your business. We are our brands.

To me, that means taking accountability. I can’t do, say and post whatever I want – even major bloggers who seem to do so are, for the most part, functioning within calculated parameters. A single post can land opportunities or drive them away. I might look cute wearing winter boots in May, but it’s not savvy. So, in a sense, post what you want, but be realistic about the consequences. If you post those winter boots in May, swimsuit companies might not reach out. Strategy is everything.

I joke that bloggers have to live life two months in the future—but that’s true! This week, I’m shooting swimwear. That forecasting mindset is rare. That’s how I turned blogging into an even more successful career than the one I left. Since starting my blog, I’ve been on talk shows, flown out to photo shoots, modeled e-commerce internationally and sat front row at New York Fashion Week. I’ve worked with ModCloth, Sephora, JustFab, Kroger and countless other fashion, beauty and lifest‌yle brands.

Anything can happen, but I’m confident that the same nimble attitude that made me restless in an office will help me pivot seamlessly as an entrepreneur. After years of cruising aimlessly, I feel like I’m finally driving toward a clear destination.
