Keep your little one in good spirits right through New Year’s Eve with these relative wrangling, calendar managing, baby prioritizing tips

The holidays can be a magical time, especially when there’s a brand-new little one to share in all the sparkly joy. But when too many seasonal happenings pile up on top of baby duties, your stress levels can get dialed up to 11, making the magic feel more like madness. To help you pull off the perfect balancing act of keeping your sanity and making precious new memories, we came up with a list of do’s and don’ts for your baby’s first Christmas.

1. Do take lots of pictures. You’ll delight in looking back at the shots of your bundled-up little one exploring their first snow day or banging away with their first dreidel.

2. Don’t feel pressure to make a big holiday meal from scratch. Unless you adore cooking and wait months for the chance to roast a turkey, this may be the year to order a pre-made meal or host a festive potluck.

3. Do respect your baby’s schedule. If your little one has settled into a routine, staying up late for too many nights can lead to joy-smashing meltdowns. Whenever it’s possible, keep up with nap and bedtime routines, and you and your little one will be well-rested and ready for holiday adventures.

4. Do take advantage of all the relatives’ love. If Aunt Jeannie wants to hold the baby for a few hours, it’ll give you the perfect opportunity to shower or take a walk. For many modern parents living far away from extended family, the holidays are the only time to have a village of support, so make the most of it!

5. Don’t be afraid to say no. If you’re too tired to go to midnight mass or attend however many holiday parties, skip it. Feel free to make liberal use of your awesome excuse: I just had a baby. The holidays are no fun if nerves are frayed and little ones are wailing, so throw out the rules and preserve a little space for rest.

6. Do take time to fit in something special to you, whether it’s driving around to see holiday lights or devouring gingerbread men. If you have the energy, you can start a family tradition, like reading ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas by candlelight, but keep it low-key. You have many more holidays in your future to create new traditions with your wee one!

7. Do bring a carefully selected bunch of baby necessities along if you’re traveling, like a favorite blanket and beloved pacifier. Ask the grandparents to have all the other essentials ready when you arrive, like diapers in the right size, so you can settle right in and get to celebrating. As for how to handle flying with a baby, check out our helpful tips here.

8. Don’t feel compelled to take a long trip. If your little one is only a few weeks old, or you’re exhausted from balancing work and new mama-hood, celebrate your baby’s first Christmas at home. Keeping it low-key means instead of risking being snowed in at an airport with a newborn—you can schedule a family visit for another time with less pressure and less risk of airplane delays.

9. Don’t blow your budget on expensive gifts. Babies don’t need a ton of shiny new toys to unwrap–most are just as happy with an empty box and a classic wooden rattle. On the other hand, if you still need a few choice pieces of baby gear, like a jogging stroller, the holidays can be a perfect time to ask Santa to slip a little something under the tree for you both.

10. Do take walks in a winter wonderland. Bundle up and get outside. With a few extra layers, babies can marvel at the sparkling snow. Plus, a little fresh air keeps the cabin fever away.

11. Do remember that while this may be your baby’s first Christmas, it’s not the only holiday. You’ll have many years to introduce your kiddo to pumpkin pie and sleigh rides. Keep it simple and focus on what’s meaningful and what brings you and your family joy.

Make sure to capture all the memories—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

What if you could whip up a creamy, dreamy summer treat and still get your fruit fix in? Well now you can—with the Blue Java banana!

Also known as the ice cream banana, this native of Southeast Asia and Hawaii is rumored to have the taste of vanilla ice cream. Along with a similar custard-like taste, the fruit also has an almost ice cream-like texture too. This means it’s perfect for smashing into summer sundaes or eating as is.

If you’re wondering where the name comes from, these aren’t your typical fruit. Unlike good ol’ yellow bananas, Blue Java’s start out with a characteristic bluish tint. Don’t expect the fruit itself to bear the blue hue. The ice cream banana is more of a vanilla color than a berry-esque shade.

So where can you get Blue Java bananas? Well that’s tricky. You can’t pick up a bunch at your local Whole Foods or Walmart grocery. This specialty produce item is only available from select retailers, and you typically have to buy them online (or buy the plants to grow). Amazon and some plant/produce sites offer this banana as it becomes seasonally available.

Music both you and your kids can agree on is a rare breed, but with Backstreet Boy Howie D’s new kids album that’s exactly what you’ll get.

Twenty years after the smashing success of their first album, the Backstreet Boys have returned with a new hit album and will soon be launching the DNA world tour. One member is turning back ti his roots to create an album for kids. Howie D is releasing his debut children’s album Which One Am I?.

“Once I started a family, my priorities changed,” Howie D said. “Having two boys, I am constantly entertaining them at home and singing Backstreet Boys music around them. Then one day it hit me … I was noticing kids coming to Backstreet Boys shows with their parents who have been longtime fans. Why not make an album to cater to the new generation of BSB fans as well as their parents who have been supporters throughout the years?”

The album, which debuts Jul 12, features a classic pop style with kid-centric, family friendly lyrics. The album was inspired by Howie D’s own childhood experiences growing up in Florida as the son of a Puerto Rican mom and an Irish-American dad. Howie D struggled to figure out where he fit in and the album ultimately follows his journey of accepting himself for who is.

The songs have also inspired an upcoming family musical theater production, Howie D: Back in the Day, which will have its world premiere next year at the Rose Theater in Omaha, Nebraska.

Which One Am I? is now available for pre-order on iTunes and Amazon.

Pet rocks are some of the easiest to care for pets around, but if you think all stones are created equal, think again. We’ve looked at some of the most popular pebbles with a parent’s eye-view of what kind of pet you would actually get. Read on for some of the basic characteristics of common rocks.

photo: laurie via flickr

Granite: This type of rock is one of the easiest breeds. Readily available in a variety of playgrounds, driveways and landscapes, the hardest part is choosing just one. This granite is tough and can handle all kinds of mistakes/neglect/oopsies, which makes it perfect for families with young kids. Even tempered, you’d never know this guy was once boiling magma.

Best for: all ages.

Obsidian: While possibly one of the smoothest rocks you can adopt, obsidian breeds are not without their challenges. Because they were once widely used to make tools, they have an underlying sharpness that requires patience and special handling. Any edges can become very sharp and lead to minor cuts. Obsidians should be handled with caution. A better choice for the slightly older and/or gentler child.

Best for: ages 6 and up, kids who don’t throw (much), kids who can’t or wouldn’t make weapons

Pumice: When looking for a fun-loving pet rock that you can take anywhere, look no further than the pumice stone. These rocks are lightweight, making them ideal for travel which means you can take them on vaycay with you. Easy-going, they don’t mind being dressed up and as an added bonus, they float in water so you can actually take them in the bath with you. The only downside to the pumice is it has a pretty rough coat so snuggling is usually kept to a minimum.

Best for: ages 2 and up.

Quartz or Quartz Crystal: Whether you choose the milky white or perfectly clear variety, or even one with a splash of purple, the quartz is a readily available and spectacular breed. Well suited to large families, they tend to absorb everything around them and can be sensitive. Rose quartz is know to help heal sad hearts and can often be found fashioned into a heart-shape. With a little love these rocks will be yours for a lifetime.

Best for: all ages, kids who need a little extra comfort in their pocket

Soapstone: Another relatively lightweight pet, soapstone is a softer stone and can be carved with moderate skill. Because they are soft, they may not be the best choice for households with teething children. Tweens and teenagers get along great with soapstone, as there is a mutual appreciation for the malleable nature and ability to become an entirely new personality on a daily basis.

Best for: mature kids, tweens, teenagers, very dextrous kids

Agate: Although many breeds have agate in them, these colorful stones make a unique addition to any family. They come in a very wide variety of colors, from deep green to rusty brown, and are sometimes dyed to very vivid tones like fuchsia. Typically very smooth, they are usually too slippery to dress up properly, but luckily their natural beauty requires little adornment.

Best for: all ages and stages

Geodes: These magical rocks are rough in the looks department and often overlooked as an excellent pet because of their ho-hum outward appearance. Best for families with commitment issues, these are not keep-forever pets. In fact, they are great for families with a more cutthroat approach as striking a hammer to these babes proves rewarding: they crack open and deliver amazing colors/crystals inside. Do not dress them up, as that only makes it more difficult to smash them (and smashing them is the best part).

Best for: mature children, kids with a desire to smash things, teenagers, adults.

What’s your favorite rock breed?

After posting a side-by-side of her (left) and her friend, Australian fitness instructor and mom-to-be, Chontel Duncan, has been making waves on the Internet. People were surprised the two friends were only 4 weeks apart in their pregnancies.

I was surprised with a cute visit today from a friend Nat who is also expecting 💕 Just being able to see someone in the flesh, rub her tummy, hear how incredible her journey has been so far, how healthy baby is & all the fun talk about kicks, food, names etc was beautiful. This is Nat's 3rd pregnancy so she had a lot of great advice to share ☺️ It's very clear in this photo just how tall I am, I mean my chin sits above Nat's head lol We worked out that we are 4 weeks apart, so our little ones will be the same age, same grade at school and potential best buds hehehehe..... Nat's due start of March & I'm due end of March. Each women carries different and this most certainly doesn't mean one is doing something wrong or not healthy etc. We both have healthy growing babies & we both have had incredible pregnancies so far, feeling amazing & full of energy. #21.5weeks #expecting #march2016 #pregnant #love #happiness #Babyduncan
