In honor of Mammoth’s record-breaking snowfall, your guide to skiing Mammoth—from which lodge is best, what to do if you don’t ski, where to stay in Mammoth with kids, and where to eat is here—plus insider hacks to make your ski experience the best one ever

“With 28-30” of snow since yesterday afternoon, we just blew through our all-time season snowfall record of 668”. We’ve received 695” of snowfall to date at Main Lodge, making the 22/23 season the biggest in our history!

To our employees, to this community, to all of you who have battled the elements this season – YOU are the stuff of legends. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 💪🏽 It’s going to be a legendary spring up here and we’ll be open daily through at least July!”

– Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Lakes, which sits at close to 8,000 feet (if you’re keeping track that’s about 1,600 feet higher than Lake Tahoe), typically has a long ski season but thanks to a record-breaking snowfall this year, Mammoth is slated to stay open for skiing at least through July and quite possibly, as late as August. If you were waiting for a sign to finally get your family up on skis or snowboarding, now’s the time to take advantage of the best (and brag-worthy) conditions. And, as we approach spring, the mountain just gets better and better—more sun, less wind, means less layers.

From world-class ski schools, après ski experiences catered just for kids, a multitude of activities off the slope, and a variety of lodging options to suit your family, Mammoth is a world-class destination that is, lucky for California families, within easy reach.

Whether your family is new to skiing, could use a lesson or two, here are the best places to learn how to ski in Mammoth, what else there is to do off the slopes with toddlers and big kids, which nearby restaurants are kid-friendly, and of course, and which cozy hotels are best for a snow-based adventure everyone will enjoy.

Mammoth is kid-friendly and isn’t the sleepy little town you remember (there are loads of hotel and restaurant options galore—and for foodies, the Voltaggio brothers just opened Vulcania in the Village last year). Add to that a straightforward drive you can handle (it’s about a two-movie drive, with a break in between for a potty break!), or a quick flight, it should become your new winter and springtime tradition.

Everything You Need to Know about Skiing in Mammoth—Especially for Beginners & First Time Skiers

Like we said before, spring in Mammoth means mild conditions, a sunny après scene and the chance to take advantage of the season’s massive snow fall. The mountain itself is large and spread out, offering loads of options for every type of snow play.

Good to Know: On the mountain, there are three lodges: Main Lodge, Canyon Lodge, and Eagle Lodge, which means that even on busy days, the crowds disperse throughout the mountain so you never feel claustrophobic on the slopes. There are free shuttle buses between all three lodges, if you want to hit all the parts of the mountain, but for first timers, we recommend choosing one of the lodges for the day (more on which one we recommend below) and committing to the one spot for ease—especially with little ones.

If You Want Your Kids to Take Lessons at Mammoth: Mammoth Ski and Snowboard School is a stellar program, with patient pros who help the little ones become future shredders—they also offer adaptive lessons so those that may have a disability can still enjoy the rush and excitement of heading down the mountain. Kids group lessons start at three-years old and continue up through adult. Lessons are available at all three lodges.

Good to Know about Skiing with Kids

  • Kids 4 and under ski free at Mammoth Mountain with beginner slopes that are wide and groomed—ideal for beginners (no matter their age). All skiers/riders need a valid ticket to load the chairlifts and gondola, so visit a ticket window and show proof of age to get your little ones a free single or multi-day ticket.
  • A fantastic family-friendly option is to purchase the Beginner Ticket (available for purchase at a ticket window) and offers lift access to beginner chairlifts at Canyon Lodge (7 and 17), Main Lodge (chairlift 11), and  Eagle Lodge (chairlift 15)  (as opposed to the entire mountain of lifts) for a discounted rate.

Next-Level Ski Hack: Let’s be honest, getting fit for skis and gear can kind of be annoying—let alone carrying all that gear around from spot to spot. To the rescue? Ski Butlers—an incredibly personal service for ski and snowboarding equipment. Instead of dealing with lines at the ski rental spots around town or in the lodges (and delaying your time on the mountain), Ski Butlers will bring gear to your accommodations—boots, helmets, skis, poles, snowboards, goggles—everything you need for the slopes. Just provide them your stats (height, weight, etc…) and they’ll fit and adjust your gear on-the-spot. They’ll even pick up your gear too so you don’t even need to worry about returning it. Of course, renting gear the old-fashioned way absolutely works as well—and the friendly staff on the mountains will get you the gear you need as quickly as possible.

Good to Know: Another fantastic ski hack? Rather than carry your gear to and from the mountain, you can store your gear slopeside in lockers you can rent. For families, this is a godsend. Private lockers are available at Main and Canyon Lodge.

Which Mammoth Lodge Is Best for Your Family?

Canyon Lodge: For beginner skiers and first-timers to the mountain who are looking for the quickest and easiest access to the slopes, we recommend Canyon Lodge. From the Village (even more convenient if you stay here), you take the gondola up to Canyon Lodge where you are delivered to the base and have access to two beginner chairlifts. These runs are relatively short compared to Eagle Lodge’s beginner runs but the terrain varies and the crowds (at least when we were there) remained minimal throughout the day compared to the other lodges.

Good to Know: There is also infant care (newborn-23 months) just steps away from the Canyon Lodge gondola with half and full day options.

Eagle Lodge: For skiers and snowboarders that are looking to progress their skills from green to blue, head to Eagle Lodge. Not only does it have the longest green runs on the mountain, there’s also Eagle Playground, that, according to Mammoth, helps burgeoning shredders “gain confidence on freestyle terrain,” and include features like, “gentle rollers, small snow spines, mini-boxes, and jumps that get bigger and longer as you shred through the park.”

Good to Know: Because there is only one beginner ski lift at Eagle Lodge, it can get more crowded.

Main Lodge: The busiest of the ski areas, in addition to some green runs, beginners can also access Woolly’s Woods and Disco Playground—beginner terrain parks and special featured fun zones for kids looking to work on some new skills. Head to this lodge if you are also planning to take the scenic Panorama Gondola up to the top—dropping you off at 11,053 feet and where you can eat at Eleven53 Cafe and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. If you have a lift ticket, you can access the gondola for free. Otherwise, up to 2 kids (ages 12 & under) ride free with each paying adult.

If You Think You’re Going to Ski More Regularly: Right now, if you purchase the 2023/24 Ikon Pass, you can take advantage of the Buy Now, Ride Now Deal—meaning you can use your pass this season at Mammoth (ahem, this season, that will most likely, last until August) and other ski and snowboard destinations.

What to Do in Mammoth with Kids Who Don’t Ski or Snowboard (Or if You Don’t Want to Ski Every Day)

fun things to do in mammoth
Andie Huber

1. Go Snowshoeing or Cross Country Skiing in Mammoth

Take the free, orange bus line to Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center (it’s only 10 minutes from the Village) for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. There are 19 miles of trails to explore with rentals, lessons, and guided tours available. Trails are dog-friendly and fairly flat so if you have a child who can trek it, this is a good spot for a beginner snowshoer.

2. Go Snow Tubing in Mammoth

Bomb down the slick snow lanes at Woolly’s Tube Park for a thrilling good time. For those 42” and smaller who aren’t yet tall enough to enjoy the ride, Woolly’s has a fun snow park area and heated deck serving up hot cocoa and adult beverages. Access to the snow park is easy—simply take the (free) red bus line here and you’ll be dropped off right at the entrance. Woolly’s Tube Park will be open through mid-April.

3. Mammoth Rock ‘N’ Bowl

Take the free red bus line or the town’s trolley (in the evening) to Mammoth Rock ‘N’ Bowl for a laid-back evening of bowling and eats from pizza to salads to poutine and tacos. Sit at a booth or have your food delivered to your bowling lane. You’ll also find a full bar and arcade, as well as a more upscale Brasserie upstairs for a date night-style dining experience.

Where to Eat in Mammoth with Kids

From fine dining to grab-and-go eats, Mammoth’s dining options are much more diverse than you’d expect from such a small town. Most spots have high chairs and kids menu (or dishes pleasing to a kiddo palate) at the ready, lots have table-side crayons and all won’t bat an eyelash if you walk in at prime dinner hour with a gaggle of children. Expect a warm welcome from restaurants eager to serve families—although like any restaurant, if you want to minimize your wait time for food, avoid the 6:30-7:30 p.m. dining hours. Below are our favorite family-friendly places to eat in Mammoth:

Where to Stay in Mammoth with Kids

Condos and hotels abound in Mammoth Lakes, and with the town’s free public bus system you really can’t go wrong with your accommodation choice. Still, traveling with kids means convenience—and proximity to shops, dining and activities—can mean the difference between a happy tear-free afternoon and an epic toddler meltdown. Here are family-friendly places to stay in Mammoth:

1. Westin Monache Resort Mammoth

Best for: Great views, hot tubs, swimming pool, and easy access to Canyon Lodge

Located in the Village, Westin Monache Resort Mammoth boasts mountain views from every room. Each room is equipped with a kitchenette, a small fridge,  and a microwave. From the hotel, just walk down the steps to the gondola and get whisked up to Canyon Lodge. The Westin offers a ski valet so you don’t have to schlep your ski equipment back and forth every night. Like The Village Lodge Mammoth, the Westin offers a free shuttle bus service, which is built into the resort fee cost.

Good to Know: Not only are all the bus lines and evening trollies just steps outside of the Westin, if  you’re staying at the Westin, they also offer a free shuttle service around town, including to Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center. Just give them a call when you’re ready to get picked up.

2. The Village Lodge Mammoth

Best for: Ultimate convenience to shops and dining

For accommodations that feel more like home book a condo at The Village Lodge Mammoth. Options range from studio condos to three-bedroom deluxe condos. Condos come equipped with kitchens or kitchenettes stocked with coffee, tea, pots, pans, dishware, a full-size fridge, stove and more, which is a huge perk if you want to whip up food for your child or store leftovers. A swimming pool is open daily (even in winter!) with cribs available upon request.

The Village Lodge also offers a free shuttle service anywhere within a 5-mile radius in Mammoth and you’re steps from dining, shopping, most of the major bus lines and the Canyon Village gondola. For those kiddos obsessed with things that go, ask for a room that looks out to the gondola—your child will love watching them come and go all day long.

3. Mammoth Mountain Inn

Best for: Ski-in-and-skin-out

If being slope-side is your jam, stay at Mammoth Mountain Inn. Located just a few steps from the lifts at the Main Lodge, this spot offers both hotel-style rooms and condos, with the latter featuring kitchenettes. Nearby you’ll find the Yoddler Restaurant and Bar, Sierra General Store and Mountainside Bar and Grill. Because the Inn is slope-side, this area does get a bit quieter once the lifts close and the après crowds have dispersed.

What to Do with Babies & Toddlers in Mammoth

If your kids are too young for ski school or you have babe you’re not ready to hand over to the slope-side childcare, here are the best things to do with young kids in Mammoth:

1. Ride the Canyon Gondola

Bonus: It’s free and if it’s not crowded, you can easily wheel your stroller on and off it for an easy ride. How long is the scenic gondola ride? It’s about 10-15 minutes each way so the adventure can take as little as 30 minutes if you want to just go up and back down again. But we recommend staying at the top and exploring around and take in the stunning views before heading back to the base.

2. Ride Mammoth’s Free Buses

Mammoth is only four miles across, which means you won’t be lost for hours on the different routes. Bonus: This is also free and we found makes for great white noise if you have a baby who loves naps in the front pack.

3. Walk around the Village

Peruse Mammoth gear and locally-sourced products (a favorite is Busy Beez General Store) , load up on coffee at Vida Coffee, chocolate at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, discover new toys at Trendy Tots, or grab a happy hour drink at one of the many kid- and dog-friendly patios (see above on great places to eat). The area is all paved and perfect for a leisurely stroller walk. Make sure to check out all the shops, dining options and events happening at the Village at Mammoth.

Good to Know: If you’re looking for a place to hang out slope-side, the area at Main Lodge behind Broadway Marketplace is emptier than most and is frequently used as a base camp for other families whose parents are trading off hitting the slopes.

4. Look Out for Woolly in the Village

You might catch him on the slopes or in one of the lodges handing out high-fives and hugs to his pint-sized fans. Also check Mammoth’s events calendar for more happenings.

How to Get to Mammoth

How to Get to Mammoth from Los Angeles

Advanced Air offers regional service to and from Burbank (BUR), Hawthorne (HHR) and Carlsbad (CLD) airports now through April 17. With Advanced Air, you’ll enjoy the convenience of a private air travel experience at a commercial airline cost with benefits such as private terminals and skipping security lines. Plus you can bring your well-behaved dog with you.

There are also daily flights from LAX that operate year-round and will deliver you to Mammoth from LAX. Of course, flying is optional—and you can absolutely drive to Mammoth from Los Angeles. If you opt to drive, it’s around 5 hours from DTLA (without traffic of course). For the full list of available flights, check out visitmammoth.com.

How to Get to Mammoth from the Bay Area

Families who flock to Tahoe know the headaches associated with I-80 traffic, especially when chain control is in effect. Flying from SFO to Mammoth? The flight time is a cool 35 minutes. If you decide to drive to Mammoth, it’s about 5-6 hours from the Bay Area.

Unlike some ski towns you might have visited, there isn’t just one central lodge or downtown area. Mammoth is fairly spread out in the sense that there is the Village, Main Lodge, Old Mammoth and Main St. The free buses or your hotel’s shuttle will get you anywhere you need to go. And, the fact that it’s a bit more spread out means areas won’t be jam-packed and overwhelming for the littles.

The Best Time to Go to Mammoth with Kids

There is never a bad time to visit Mammoth but if you want to introduce your kids to skiing, then springtime, according to the experts, is by far the best time to go. The weather is warmer, the sun is shining and it’s not as windy as it can be during the winter months—no frozen fingers and toes to slow your brood down.

Our Editor’s Cheat Sheet for a First-Timers Weekend Trip to Mammoth & Having Smoothest Ski Vacation Ever:

  1. Fly into Mammoth (the flight is less than an hour).
  2. Stay at The Westin (amazing location close to the Village & Canyon Lodge for awesome beginner trails, après ski hot tubs, and nearby dining).
  3. Download the Mammoth App (best planning tool and up-to-the-minute information)
  4. Use Ski Butlers to rent your gear (delivered and picked-up from your room).
  5. For a non-ski day, go snowshoeing at Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center for an epic winter hike.
  6. Don’t forget the sunblock! Bluebird days (sunny, cloudless days) means you’re that much closer to the sun—and it will show.

Splurge on the lessons, find the playground, and don’t miss the sleigh ride

As someone who grew up in Northern California, the Rocky Mountains are somewhat of a mystery to me. I’d seen them in pictures and on TV, but experiencing their beauty? It was still on my bucket list up until a few weeks ago. My son and I took a trip to Keystone Resort, the iconic ski destination just under two hours outside of Denver, CO. It is one of the most family-friendly snow destinations I have ever visited; I can full-heartedly say that our adventure fulfilled all my expectations and then some.

Why Is the Keystone Resort So Special?

I’ve been snowboarding for almost half my life, but once I had kids, quality time on the slopes was a thing of the past. The idea of lugging all the gear (not just for myself but for little ones) seemed overwhelming, and the thought of teaching them how to get down the mountain seemed impossible. At Keystone, there are many perks and programs that make time spent there fun for everyone.

First, there’s an amazing deal for families with kids: anyone age 12 and under gets a free day of skiing if lodging with the resort for two or more nights.

Second, the Vail Resorts Epic Pass is… epic. You can opt for a season pass allowing access to all 42 locations, including spots in California, Vermont, Colorado, Utah, and Canada. If you don’t plan on resort-hopping, go for the Epic Day pass. Customize your pass to include all or a portion of the locations and choose from one to seven days. All the deals give you a 20% discount on food, lodging, lessons, and rentals. The 2023/2024 epic pass is on sale now; check it out here.

Third, Keystone Resort has tons of beginner-level skiing and snowboarding options. Hop on the River Run Gondola to get to the top of Dercum Mountain, where you’ll find the Endeavor Learning Area, the Snow Fort, and a snow tubing hill. The entrance to Schoolmarm, the legendary 3.5-mile family-friendly run, is also at the top of Dercum Mountain.

Related: 10 Skiing Tricks to Memorize Before Hitting the Slopes

If you and your family are ready to hit Schoolmarm, look for the Kids Adventure Zones (there are four) that can be found on the way down. There are tunnels to ski through, a tree zone, and an Igloo visit. If the elevation at the top of Dercum Mountain is too much (over 11,000 ft.!), spend your time at the Mountain House beginner area. It is accessible from the parking lot, and you’ll find plenty of green skiing areas and two magic carpets.

Finally, when it comes to dining on the mountain, Keystone Resort has some of the best to offer! Summit House, on the top of Dercum Mountain, has everything from chicken tenders and hamburgers to enticing butter chicken bowls. You’ll also be treated to a breathtaking, nearly 360-degree view of the Rocky Mountains at Summit House if you walk up to the Crow’s Nest. A special dining opportunity, even for those who aren’t ready to get there by board or skis, is to hop on the Outpost Gondola at Dercum Mountain, enjoy stunning views of the valley, and enjoy lunch at the newly expanded Timber Ridge Lodge. If you find yourself at the Mountain House area, don’t miss the chance to eat at Big Burger.

What Else Can Families Do at Keystone?

little boy in River Run Village at Keystone Resort
Gabby Cullen

After finishing your last run of the day, plan on spending time in River Run Village. This is where you’ll find the best dining options for families. There is pizza, pub food at 9280 Taphouse (they have great soups, sandwiches, high bar tables perfect for people watching, and one of the best playlists I’ve ever heard), craft beer, soft pretzels and all-day hot chocolate at Steep Brewing + Coffee Co., a candy store, crepes, cookies, pasta, empanadas, and more. Seek out the huge fire pits to warm up after a cold day on the slopes. Let the kids burn their last bit of energy on the Wild West-themed playground located right before the Gondola.

Book a sleigh ride dinner at the Adventure Center at the Keystone Lodge & Spa. Once aboard the sleigh, you’ll be taken through Soda Creek Valley towards a hearty dinner and musical entertainment at Soda Creek Homestead. Go ice skating at Lakeside Village, try your hand at a game of hockey, or rent ice skating trainers from the Adventure Center.

How Do You Make Your Time at Keystone Resort Even Better?

little boy taking a lesson at Keystone Resort
Gabby Cullen

The answer to this question is simple—book a lesson. For your kids and yourself. Yes, for yourself. Keystone also offers a Ski and Ride School green run guarantee: they promise you’ll be skiing or snowboarding in green terrain in three lessons, or your fourth lesson is free. Who qualifies? Anyone ages seven and older (adults, this means you, too) can take advantage of this deal, so it’s perfect for first-timers, whatever your age. Even better, the three lessons don’t have to be in a row.

Truth time: I am a self-taught snowboarder and spent my time on blue and black diamond slopes until I had kids. But breaking down the process and explaining it to my son wasn’t something I felt comfortable doing. Our instructor, Brenden Rowan, is a level-two AASI-certified instructor with an additional children’s specialist certification. He has been at Keystone Resort for five seasons and was knowledgeable and passionate about the resort, the sport, and sharing his skills with his students.

After our experience with Brenden, my nine-year-old was boarding confidently and correctly. I took a lesson (my first, ever!) alongside my son and learned that while I can get down a mountain, I still had much to learn. When I asked him about the advantages of booking a lesson, Rowan said, “It builds skills and self-confidence. You get valuable feedback, and with that, you’ll avoid forming bad habits while enjoying the mountain.” All the instructors share Brenden’s enthusiasm and knowledge; I can confidently say that your kids will return from lessons as better skiers and boarders—tired but happy.

Where Should You Stay While at Keystone?

While I’m partial to Keystone Lodge & Spa for the quiet atmosphere and great dining options (don’t miss the BLT with egg sandwich or avocado toast on the cafe breakfast menu, or, if you have older kids, the impressive entrees at Bighorn Bistro), you might gravitate towards something closer to the slopes. The Hyatt Place Keystone is located near the Mountain House base area and offers large rooms with daily breakfast, and the luxurious Buffalo Lodge is in the heart of River Run Village. Have a big group in tow? Book a private home right at the resort.

Keystone is the closest ski mountain to Denver, and you can find plenty of affordable direct flights, which makes this dream of a resort easy to access year after year. It truly has something for everyone, from beginners to pros, and you leave wishing you were already planning your return—something I plan to do as soon as possible.

Beginner-friendly ski slopes, an indoor waterpark, and cabins for families make this spot a winner

If you’re eager to get your kids on skis, Massanutten Resort is the place to start. Over the past 50 years, this family-friendly mountain has grown from a six-trail destination to a four-season entertainment center featuring 14 ski trails, snow tubing, an indoor/outdoor water park, ice skating, an e-sports center, and more. Just two hours from both Washington DC and Richmond, VA, Massanutten Resort offers some of the best ski conditions in the region thanks to its high-tech snowmaking and grooming capabilities. With over 50 new snowmaking guns, this mountain makes more snow in a day “than Mother Nature.”

Not only are the ski conditions top-notch, but there are plenty of activities beyond the trails for family fun and memory-making. Spend an afternoon zipping down what The Washingtonian has praised as the best snow tubing park in the region, enjoy the indoor waterpark on a rainy day, or challenge the family to air hockey or bowling at the resort’s onsite arcade. Massanutten Resort delivers an action-packed, family-oriented winter getaway for both novice and expert skiers with plenty of après-ski things to do.

The Ski Experience at Massanutten Resort

Meghan Yudes Meyers

New skiers should make a beeline for the Magic Carpet conveyor lift for an itty bitty bunny hill that is so gentle you rarely see new skiers topple. Once new skiers master the snow plow, it’s on to Paula’s Way, a longer run down a gradual hill where new skiers (and snowboarders) get a better sense of balancing on skis. Once your kiddo becomes confident on this hill, you can introduce them to Creekside’s quad chairs and hit Southern Comfort, a hill that mirrors Paula’s Way in steepness but offers a much longer run.

One of the biggest expenses at any mountain is ski lessons. Costing almost as much as a lift ticket, it’s a spendy investment we think is worth it.  Help you or your child get comfortable on the mountain fast by building confidence-boosting skills quickly. You’ll find teachers—all of whom are registered members of PSIA or Professional Ski Instructors of America—that work with any range of abilities and are also experienced in adaptive instruction for those who might do better with a different learning style.

While your child is enrolled in class, take advantage of the babysitting (wink, wink) and explore the more advanced trails. Massanutten Resort boasts the highest vertical of any ski mountain in VA, MD, or PA—rewarding those that make it to the peak with impressive views.

Where to Fuel Up on the Slopes

Massanutten Resort

The General Store
A day of skiing can work up an appetite. Whether you want to kick start your day with a cup of coffee or grab trail mix for the slopes, The General Store has a wide variety of sundries for a day of skiing. You’ll also find must-have staples for your rental, like cooking oil, condiments, and marshmallows for roasting. Forgot ski gloves or need to size up on some ski pants? You’ll find everything from socks to ski coats to help you suit up for the mountain.

Ski Lodge Cafeteria
Spend more time on the trails and less time in the lodge with a quick meal. The cafeteria’s menu is loaded with hot comfort foods, like chicken fingers, pizza, and chili, but you’ll also find lighter options like salads, yogurts, fresh fruits, and sandwiches in the refrigerated section. This quick service option offers a fresh fixings bar with large slices of tomato, fresh lettuce, and other sandwich toppers.

Virginia BBQ & Pizza Co.
At the end of a day of skiing, make a pit stop at this onsite-smoked BBQ and pizza joint at the foot of Massanutten (located in the Visitor Center). For picky eaters, this dine-in and carry-out restaurant also has a kids’ menu featuring chicken fingers, hot dogs, and grilled cheese. Virginia BBQ & Pizza Co. is also a great place to start your day with breakfast sandwiches, French toast sticks, or egg-based breakfast bowls.

More Mountain Fun: Snow Tubing

Skiing isn’t the only way to enjoy Massanutten’s mountain. If you’ve got a beginner on skis, chances are they’ll spy the saucer-like tubes flying down the mountain just a short distance from Paula’s Way (you can’t miss the screams!). Praised as the best snow tubing by The Washingtonian, these 90-minute snow tube sessions whisk tubers down one of 16 lanes for fast thrills (and a few high-pitched shrieks). You must be 36′ tall to participate and tubes are single-rider only, but you can attach up to four tubes to pick up some extra speed.

Family Fun After Skiing

Massanutten Resort

A trip to Massanutten Resort would be incomplete without a visit to its famed Indoor waterpark. The indoors are always heated to a toasty 84° so your littles can climb and explore without ever feeling cold. There is a lazy river, numerous (gigantic!) dump buckets, a kid-friendly hot tub, a kiddie pool, giant tube slides, body slides, and more. Not to be missed is the wave pool where experienced surfers will teach you how to zig left and right through the waves, kneel on your board and if you’re one of the nimble few, pop up to surf!

Meghan Yudes Meyers

Above Massanutten’s WaterPark is a full floor of arcade fun. If you’ve rented a locker at the water park, you’ll get a $15 “refund” to use in the arcade. Beyond grabber machines and arcade games, this entertainment center features pin bowling and ride-on games. When you’re done playing, take your card loaded with your ticket winnings to the shop (yes, there is an entire shop!) to choose from a massive range of prizes.

From hotels to townhouses to home rentals, there are a number of lodging options both on the mountain and in the valley at Massanutten Resort. King among them is Regal Vistas, a condo-style housing community surrounded by mountain views.

We love these two-bedroom homes not only for their convenience to all of the Resort’s amenities (the water park is at the base of the complex and the ski trails are a quick drive away) but each house is meticulously designed for an optimal family vacation. With a king-bed master, a queen bed, and a pull-out sofa, these homes can comfortably accommodate up to six guests. There is a full kitchen, a washer/dryer, and a single-car garage (which comes in handy as a makeshift play area). You’ll appreciate the master suite’s hot tub after a long day of skiing (and we bet the kids will find it the most epic bubble bath ever with changing colored lights).

Vintage is the name of the game at these old-school Atlanta bowling alleys

Don’t get us wrong, winter in Atlanta is tons of fun. Who doesn’t love snow tubing and sledding when the snow flies. Or heading out for a day of skiing? There’s lots of love about the cooler months. But sometimes it doesn’t hurt to duck inside when the temperatures are still chilly. So we found all the indoor bowling fun you need to get out and have family fun together. There’s nothing quite like watching your child bowl their first strike at a bowling alley near Atlanta. So, pack up your family and head to these Atlanta bowling alleys to turn back the clock on entertainment. Each spot is family-friendly and goes beyond bowling with everything from laser tag to epic arcade games. Consider this the perfect rainy day line-up of family-friendly bowling alleys in the city.

1. Midtown Bowl

An Atlanta tradition since 1960, get your game on with 32 lanes at this classic Atlanta bowling alley. Stepping inside, you’re welcomed by the charm of a 1970’s colorful, retro-chic bowling alley with lane tables that sit up to six and a jukebox. Jukebox lessons with your kids are always fun since they’ve probably never tried one.

Beyond Bowling: This vintage bowling alley focuses on the main event, but the food is an excellent distraction. For kids, they’ve got everything from fish sticks to corn dogs, and big kids will love the signature burgers. Check out the vegan and vegetarian menus, too.

Insider Tip: Midtown Bowl is a cash-free business.

3. The Painted Duck

Be sure to visit this Atlanta bowling alley that offers upscale bowling before 5 p.m. when kids are allowed. It is nothing short of amazing. Thankfully, each duckpin bowling alley and seating area is sparkling clean, and the tableside service makes bowling with kids much more manageable. You’ll get three rolls per turn with duckpins, and the smaller balls are great for little hands.

Beyond Bowling: The Painted Duck has many fun games besides bowling, and the menu offers excellent food and cocktails far from typical bowling alley fare. The Duck Phat Fries and Duck Nuggets are the perfect options to start. Then, go all in and order the Whole Peking Duck. After dinner, take a walk around and pick one of the vintage games to play, like Horseshoes or Toad Hole.

Insider Tip: You are limited to two lanes and two hours of bowling. Valet parking ($3 plus gratuity) is available onsite.

There’s an arcade game around every corner and family-friendly food for your crew.

Whether you need a day trip or have more time to spare, these are the best California winter road trips, and perhaps, dare we say, are even more fun than their summertime counterparts

As we locals know, winter in California is especially fun because you can find both snowy mountains and sunny beaches just a short(ish) drive away. From the sparkling beaches of Santa Barbara to the snow-covered mountain town of Big Bear, here are our favorite California winter road trip ideas to take with the kids.

The Best Winter Road Trips to Take from Los Angeles

1. Big Bear & Snow Summit

While we have a whole article dedicated to where to find snow near LA, worthwhile mentions include Big Bear Mountain and Snow Valley below. Both are chock full of winter activities and sports for the whole family. Stay for the day or easily spend a few days learning new skills. Beginner shredders can take snowboard lessons (from age four years old and up) and avid skiers and snowboarders can take a half or full-day lessons at either Bear Mountain or Snow Summit.

2. Snow Valley Mountain Resort

This smaller mountain is great for snow angels just beginning their snow-journey. It's also less crowded than big brother mountain (Big Bear). For the little ones, head to the Children's Learning Center where snow bunnies can learn to ski or snowboard. Moreover, there's a snow play area where you can enjoy Southern California’s only chairlift-serviced sledding area. After the scenic chairlift ride, you get to whiz down the longest downhill sled ride in the region.

3. Santa Barbara

If you'd rather skip the snow and freezing temps for some beachfront fun this winter, look no further than Santa Barbara for a relaxing family getaway. We recommend staying at Hotel Santa Barbara or The Wayfarer, or if you swing full-on luxury, stay at Four Seasons The Biltmore Santa Barbara.

4. Ojai

If you're looking for a serene getaway that's off the beaten path and immersed in nature, Ojai is the destination for you. Located about an hour and a half from Los Angeles, this charming town has a super chill vibe. Go hiking, biking, or horseback riding, and bask in the warm winter weather while soaking up all the outdoor recreation Ojai has to offer.

5. Oxnard

Looking for a small beach town vibe? About an hour north of Los Angeles, you'll find Oxnard's Hollywood Beach with its sprawling sandy shores and laidback, locals-only feel. Daily highs during the winter months hover around the mid-60s, which may be a bit too cold for swimming, but it's perfect for flying kites, splashing in the waves, and building castles in the sand.

6. Coronado Island

Nicknamed the "Crown City," Coronado earns its regal title due to its majestic beaches (complete with golden, glittering sand) and grand resorts. Located just ten minutes from downtown San Diego, this amazing destination is reachable via a short ferry ride or drive over the Coronado Bridge—but you’ll definitely feel like you’ve gone on a relaxing vacation a world away.

For a hike, the one-mile loop trail through Hidden Valley is a good introduction for little ones. Start your adventure at the West entrance, then work your way along the road, exiting the park at the South. If you want to spend a few nights, see why our editor's recommend staying at AutoCamp Joshua Tree—the closest overnight spot to the Western entrance, this glamping spot is complete with modern Airstream trailers, fire pits, and a marketplace full of yummy treats and food.

8. Solvang

Solvang, aka the "Danish Capital of America," has a lot more going for it than a photo-worthy windmill. While the town still has plenty of kitschy charm worth checking out (and the pastries!), there's also a nearby miniature horse farm, an ostrich farm, and a Viking-inspired playground, all worth the visit. 11. Siskiyou County

Head north past Redding (but not without making a stop at the Redding Garden of Lights detailed below) to the tranquil county of Siskiyou that extends to the California-Oregon border. Here you'll find gorgeous hikes like the Hedge Creek Falls Trail in Dunsmuir and the McCloud Falls Trail. Spend some time fishing for trout and exploring all of the outdoor adventures that the area has to offer. When you want to stay the night, we love the vintage cabooses turned into sleeping compartments at Railroad Park in Dunsmuir.

Meadows offers varied terrain that challenges skiers at all levels on over 2,150 acres. From Heather Canyon to South Canyon, and from Buttercup to Show Off, there’s something for everyone. For children between the ages of four and fourteen, camps, lessons, and clubs are available. You can purchase your lift ticket or season pass online in advance.

Good to Know: If lessons aren't something your kids are up for, you can drop them at the Meadows Daycare. One of the only ski resorts in the nation to offer state-certified care for kids as young as 6 weeks, parents can sign kids up for the day or for a run of days so they can get in all the runs. Timberline Lodge

The fact you can ski for 10 months out of the year, and the addition of Summit Pass (formerly Summit Ski Area), makes Timberline an easy choice for Portland families on the hunt for a ski resort they can return to year after year. Get to know the 1,685 acres of skiable terrain at both Timberline and Summit Pass with the kids. Summit Pass is a great spot for beginning snowboarders and skiers alike. It's also where you'll find the snow tubing lanes. It's a great option for families looking for lessons and affordability. Six high-speed quads, two doubles, and one surface lift get families where they need to go. And although the two terrains aren't yet lift connected, there are plenty of shuttle options so you can try their both on your trip.

Insider Tip: Timberline's terrain parks offer everything from the Schoolyard (perfect for beginners) to Conway's big jumps. Even if the kids aren't ready for it yet, it's fun to watch others tackle the snowy jumps and rails.

For a full day or better yet a family weekend trip, Hoodoo Ski Area in Sisters, just outside of Bend, is a worthy destination. Where to Go Cross-Country Skiing

Teacup Lake

Escape the speed demon crowds, and enjoy downhill’s quieter winter kin—cross-country skiing. Enjoy 24 kilometers (that's about 12 miles) of groomed trails, relative solitude, and a spectacular view of Mt. Hood once you pass frozen and snow-covered Teacup Lake in the Mt. Hood National Forest. There are groomed tracks and a skating lane, and all are groomed Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Teacup’s pristine trails stay that way because dogs and snow shoes are not allowed; that plus a friendly emphasis on a particular standard of trail etiquette. When you need to warm up, head to the Ray Garey Cabin to shake off the cold.

Insider Tip: If you're a family a first-timers, Teacup offers an array of learn-to-ski classes for kids as young as 6.

Tips for a Successful Ski Day with Kids:

1. Expect shorter skiing days, especially if naps are still part of your family routine. Runs open early, so you can make the most of your day by getting up and at 'em as early as possible. Then heading back down the mountain around afternoon nap time. There's no doubt the kids will be tired after a day on the slopes.

2. Snacks and water are a must. No matter where you're eating on the mountain, everyone always seems to be hungry at the same time. Avoid meltdowns by packing extras for hungry kids, and avoid wait times by eating around peak times.

3. When it comes to buying gear, kids' growth spurts make buying a little frustrating financially, so renting is a great option. Although the one piece of gear to purchase (according to experts) is a good helmet.

4. It’s always a good idea to check weather and road conditions at ODOT's Trip Check before heading out for the day. Snow conditions on the mountain are a must too. All of these resorts have condition cameras that livestream so you can plan your day to go as smoothly as possible.

There are so many things to love about Big Bear in the winter—here’s everything to see and do when you have just a few days to get away

Thanks to all the rain LA’s received recently, the nearby mountains are covered in snow (just take a look to the east and you’ll see those white-capped mountains in all their glory). And while there are plenty of places to play in the snow for the day near LA, what if you want to spend a couple of days frolicking in the snow? The best answer for LA residents? Big Bear Lake, CA. This mountain town reliably and consistently receives more snow than its San Bernardino National Forest neighbors thanks to a higher elevation (and head’s up, they just received another 21″ thanks to last week’s rain). From where to eat, where to play, and where to stay in Big Bear Lake, your 48-hour guide is here.

Where Is Big Bear, CA?

Located in the San Bernardino Mountains along the south shore of Big Bear Lake, and surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest, Big Bear is 98 miles northeast of DTLA. Driving to Big Bear is a fairly easy drive, but in the winter, it’s best to take your time—especially if you’re unfamiliar with the curvy roads perched on the edge of the mountain. There are three ways to drive to Big Bear Lake and it’s best to check Caltrans for the latest up-to-date information about which routes are open, clear, and which routes you should avoid.

Do I Need Chains for Big Bear?

The short answer to if you need chains for Big Bear? Yes. Some sites state that chains are required to be carried in your vehicle from November 1-April 30. Your best bet is to purchase them, have them with you for your trip, and return them if you don’t use them. According to Caltrans, “You must stop and put on chains when highway signs indicate chains are required. You can be cited by the California Highway Patrol and fined if you don’t. You will usually have about a mile between ‘Chains Required’ signs and the checkpoint to install your chains.”

There’s nothing that can ruin a trip faster than not being adequately prepared—and while the main roads may be clear, once you turn onto snow and ice-covered side roads and attempt to drive up or down those slippery slopes, you’ll see very quickly how useful those chains will come in handy—and be extremely happy you brought them with you.

Is There Snow in Big Bear & When Does it Snow in Big Bear?

Ah! The million dollar questions—or if you’re on the LA Mommies Facebook Group—the most frequently asked question whenever there’s a whiff of snow in the news. Unfortunately, you’ll have to check the weather to see if it is snowing in Big Bear but snow generally stays on the ground—especially on Snow Summit and Bear Mountain—and at higher elevations. As long as it’s cold, you’ll more than likely find snow when you’re there.

PS: Big Bear just received 21″ of new snow last week and 100% of trails are open at Big Bear Mountain Resort (BBMR) who operates both Snow Summit and Bear Mountain.

Things to Do in Big Bear in Winter: Your 48-Hour Itinerary

Now for the fun part! Big Bear can be as chill or active as you like. Go out in The Village of Big Bear at night and you’ll experience a downright magical and lively destination. Want to tuck into your rented cabin and get cozy by the fire? You can do that too!

What to Do in Big Bear on Day One:

  • Drive to Big Bear from Los Angeles
  • Check Into your Cabin via Big Bear Vacations
  • Dinner at Hacienda

The drive to Big Bear, from LA, is pretty straight-forward and, slightly less harrowing than the climb to Lake Arrowhead but do pay attention to the time of day you are leaving. A fairly simple, 1.5 hour drive can quickly turn into 3+ hours—not fun for anyone, especially with kids.

Stop at Big Bear Vacation to grab your check-in information for your cabin rental. Big Bear Vacations is the longest running rental home agent in Big Bear and offer a variety of stays—from lake front cabins to pet-friendly lodges, they definitely have something that will fit your family’s needs.

Good to Know: Check-in time for Big Bear Vacations is 4 p.m. so if you find yourself in the area before check-in time (a good plan anyway), there’s plenty to explore in The Village. Riddle Routes and Urban Adventure Quest offer smartphone-led walking tours of The Village. Solve the clues to move from one destination to the next and learn a little Big Bear history along the way. Super fun for families and groups—and you’ll get a great overview of The Village (and can scope out restaurants, shopping destinations, and where to go for dessert).

If you’re in The Village for lunch, we recommend: Royal Thai for authentic Thai food or Sweet Basil Bistro for seasonal Italian fare.

Dinner: For a super casual, family-friendly dinner, head to Hacienda Grill. This family-owned and operated Mexican is lively, spacious, and delivers belly-satisfying options like Carne Asada, Chile Verde and fajitas. Definitely a must and is sure to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.

What to Do in Big Bear on Day Two:

  • Breakfast at Amangela’s
  • Skiing & Snowboarding at Snow Summit
  • Dinner at Santana & Mavericks

8:00 a.m.: Amangela’s, a counter-serve breakfast spot, specializing in bagels, is fantastic way to start the day (and fuel up) before heading to Snow Summit. The order-and-go style is essential for getting to the mountain early to ensure close-to-the-mountain parking, as well as get a jump on the tickets and rental queue.

For the adults, we recommend The Breakfast Bagel—you get your choice of bagel, served withe eggs, cooked with red onion, bell pepper, cheese, and your choice of meat—ham, bacon or veggie sausage.

For kids, they have plain bagels and cream cheese and peanut butter and jam or, for more adventurous tykes, bagels a la carte incuding onion, everything, sesame, cheddar, cinnamon raisin, blueberry and multi-grain.

Don’t forget the coffee and hot chocolate!

8:30 a.m.: Head to Snow Summit—just a 7 minute ride down the road—to get your lift tickets, your gear, and get ready for a fun day skiing on the mountain.

What’s the Difference between Snow Summit and Bear Mountain?

While the two resorts are related and are owned by the same company (Big Bear Mountain Resort or BBMR), there are some differences between the two snow destinations. Snow Summit is widely thought to be the more family-friendly, traditional ski and snowboarding mountain while Bear Mountain is known for it’s trails and adventurous half-pipes and terrain parks for those looking for freestyle skiing and snowboarding.

But you don’t have to choose between the two mountains! BBMR and Ikon Passes are valid at both locations, including night sessions at Snow Summit and there is a convenient and free shuttle that can take you between the two.

Good to Know: BBMR partners with USARC, a non-profit that provides year-round recreational activities for people with physical and cognitive disabilities.

Where to Eat at Snow Summit

There are a number of places you can refuel for lunch or mid-day snacks on the mountain. The apres-ski life is alive and well at this mountain resort. For bbq, visit Bighorn Smokehouse—located at the Base near Chair Lift 1 and touted as some of the best bbq in Big Bear Lake.

Ironwood Coffee is where you can grab specialty coffee drinks and hot chocolate.

Located slopeside at the bottom of Chair 2, Timber & Slice serves slices of pizza (without having to head down to the base of the mountain).

And for a lunch with a brag-worthy view, head to Skyline Taphouse—Big Bear’s only mountaintop restaurant where you can dine on soups, sandwiches, salads, and wraps along with an outdoor BBQ full bar. The best part though? The must-see views of San Gorgonio Mountain—Southern California’s highest peak at an elevation of 11,503 feet. Take Chair 1 all the way to the top.

Good to Know: Weekend visitors can also enjoy the all-new waffle station, serving both sweet and savory versions of the classic.

6 p.m: Time for dinner! For specialty crafted cuisine, head to Santana & Mavericks in The Village. During the summer, this hot spot has epic views of the lake thanks to its lake-facing outdoor patio but in the winter, the inside is just as fun thanks to a cozy vibe that serves “a little bit of everything.” So if one person is in the mood for Italian while another wants French? It’s all here.

What to Do in Big Bear on Day Three:

  • Check Out of Your Cabin from Big Bear Vacations
  • Breakfast at Country Kitchen
  • Go to Big Bear Snow Play

9:00 a.m.: Check-out time from Big Bear Vacations is 10 a.m., so might as well pack up the car, grab breakfast at Country Kitchen before heading over to Big Bear Snow Play for some epic snow tubing fun.

Country Kitchen is a cute, local diner that serves ample breakfast portions and hit-the-spot coffee. Kids will love the waffles, while ‘The Best Pancakes in Town’ lived up to their moniker.

Online: countrykitchen.com

10:00 a.m.: For epically fun snow play near LA, Big Bear Snow Play is where it’s at thanks to being the largest tubing hill in Southern California but also because they have special magic carpets that carry you and your tubes up the hill so you can save your energy for screaming your head off as you barrel down the snow-packed tubing hill.

Good to Know: Big Bear Snow Play is sometimes open for after-dark tubing sessions on the weekends and during the holidays—so picture the classic snow tubing fun but with colored lights. Save this note for later—Big Bear Snow Play is also an all-year-round recreation destination with activities like go-karts, multi-level ropes course, and a zipline.
