Whether you’ve got a newborn who will (hopefully) sleep through any flick or a tot who probably won’t sit still, these theaters offer kid-friendly screenings and amenities—like free popcorn, a playground and more. (And if you haven’t at least been to LA’s iconic El Capitan, it should definitely be on your LA bucket list!) Read on for all the details on LA’s best family-friendly movie theaters.

Kid-Friendly Movie Theaters in LA

New Beverly Cinema

Visit one of the oldest theaters in Los Angeles for a Sat. or Sun. Kiddee Matinee. All ages welcome and there's a free child-sized popcorn and raffle tickets for guests ages 12 and under. Movies change from week to week and range from popular contemporary flicks to old-school classics.

Cinepolis Junior Theater

Cinepolis Junior Theater

A movie theater and indoor playground in one? We’ve hit the mother lode at the Junior Theater located within Cinepolis which screens kids movies (Rated G and PG only) all week long. The theater boasts a play structure meant to give children (ages 3-to-12) a chance to burn off some of that boundless energy before the show and during a brief intermission.

The concept is pure genius for toddlers and other kids with a low tolerance for sitting still for extended periods of time. Equipped with two slides, a tire climber, and plastic animal sculptures, little ones can romp and roam for 20 minutes prior to the start of the film and during a 15-minute intermission. Playtime is not allowed during the movie but kids happily (and surprisingly) abide by that rule. Parents can relax in peace knowing their kids are mellowed out and ready for the main attraction.

El Capitan Theatre

Disney’s own El Capitan Theatre introduces your little one to the magic of movies in a kid-friendly yet elegant setting. Dubbed “Hollywood’s First Home of Spoken Drama,” this architectural masterpiece blends a Spanish Colonial exterior with a vibrant and lavish interior. Aside from the state of the art special effects, this 1,000 seat theater offers an incredible Dolby audio system that parents will appreciate.

If your child is very young or has special needs, the Tiny Tot screenings (Tues. at 10 a.m.) are designed to reduce sensory overload: Lights go dim (not down), the volume lowers and all films are screened in 2D. Parents and kids will marvel at the majesty both on and off the screen at this iconic Hollywood theater.

Outdoor Movie Theaters & Drive-Ins

Street Food Cinema

Pop-up movie theaters timed perfectly with summer give LA families a chance to enjoy cinema al fresco. But at Street Food Cinema, watching a beloved movie outdoors is just one part of the family fun! Admission to this event also gets you a ticket to live music performances and lots of delicious eats via (infamous) LA food trucks.

If that isn’t enough to woo parents, kids 5 and under are free. With 14 locations from Glendale to Malibu, there’s plenty of kid-friendly programming.

Vineland Drive-In Theater

Take a trip back in time and cruise over to one of LA’s best-kept secrets. This theater is perfect for families that want to experience a movie with all the comforts of their car (and home). Pile everyone in and bring along your kid’s favorite snacks, blankets and pillows. Movies here play rain or shine, seven nights a week.

Atlanta, GA

Tawfeeq K. via Yelp

Being an Atlanta parent is pretty sweet. From world-class attractions like the Center for Puppetry Arts and the Georgia Aquarium to a plethora of shady parks perfect for playtime any time of the year, you're never at a loss for something juicy to sink your teeth into. In honor of this fair city, we've picked a peck of perfectly peachy Atlanta-inspired baby names for boys and girls that you'll love.

August or Augusta

In addition to being the city where every spring The Master's Tournament takes place, this Georgia town shares a name with Helen Augusta Howard, who established the Georgia Woman Suffrage Association (GWSA) in the 1890s.

Dex

This one's for you, Decatur. For your funky independence and our favorite book festival of the year, we feel like you need to be honored in the next generation of Atlanta baby's names.

Gladys

The "Empress of Soul," Gladys Knight—a four-time Grammy Award-winner best known for hits Midnight Train to Georgia and I Heard It Through the Grapevine— was born and raised in Atlanta.

Peachy

Peachtree just doesn't work when it comes to a first, or even middle, name. But shorten it, and you'll find yourself with a Peach of a name—perfect for a precious baby from the Peach State.

Boston, MA

Jayden Burdick via Pexels

Boston folk are a proud bunch and it's no surprise that they love naming their offspring after historical figures, landmarks and even their sports teams.

Brookline

We love this name for a girl as it differs from the more popular Brooklyn. It pays homage to this neighborhood just a few T stops past Kenmore Square.

Copley

Copley Square, named for painter John Singleton Copley, is a public square in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood. The name would be great for either a boy or a girl.

Revere

Prominent Boston silversmith Paul Revere is best known for his midnight ride to alert the colonial militia in April 1775 to the approach of British forces before the battles of Lexington and Concord. The town of Revere, MA was named after him in 1871.

Skylar

Do you really know anything about Boston if you haven't seen Good Will Hunting? We think not. The name Skylar was made popular after Minnie Driver played a character with this name in the movie that was written by Cambridge, MA friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Chicago, IL

Adler Planetarium

Like the city they hail from, Chicagoans have grit—a play-hard, work-hard attitude. They know ketchup has zero business on a hot dog, distance is always measured in minutes and the best football teams are da Bears and anyone who crushes the Packers. It’s a logical leap to stamp a Chicago kid with a name derived from the streets, athletes, politicians and landmarks that make this city great.

Check out our other favorite Chicago names here

Adler

Elgin native, Max Adler, was a concert violinist who gave up music to become VP of Sears Roebuck & Co. after marrying into the family that controlled the powerhouse company. After his retirement in 1928, he became a philanthropist who was key to the creation of the first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere, Adler Planetarium.

Briggs

Lance Briggs played his entire 12-year career as a Chicago Bear linebacker, which is great and all, but mostly Briggs would be an adorable hipster baby name. Just picture baby Briggs in his flannel buttondown, skinny jeans, busted-up Chucks, messy-hair-don't-care style, and over-sized glasses for his 20/20 vision.

Ernie

Nicknamed Mr. Cub and Mr. Sunshine, some say former Cubs player Ernie Banks is the greatest player who ever picked up a bat and glove. He wasn't all brawn and no brains, however, as he was also the first black Ford Motor Company dealer in the United States.

Ida

Ida B. Wells was an African-American investigative journalist, educator and early leader in the Civil Rights Movement, having been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War at the age of 16. She was arguably one of the most famous black women during her time, working to combat prejudice and fight for the equality of African-American women.

Dallas, TX

Matthew T Rader via Unsplash

Anyone who lives in Dallas knows that it’s not only the norm but also highly encouraged to go big or go home. These baby names not only make a statement but also pay homage to the history and culture of Big D.

Find all of our Dallas favorites here

Dirk

The Dallas Mavericks wouldn’t be the same without German phenom Dirk Nowitzki. The beloved basketball player hung up his jersey in 2019, but his legend will live on for decades.

Fenix

Popular restaurant chain El Fenix started in Dallas in 1918 and is the country’s oldest Mexican restaurant chain. Some also claim El Fenix is the birthplace of Tex-Mex cuisine.

Kessler

In honor of George Edward Kessler, a pioneer architect, urban planner and landscape architect who was hired by the city of Dallas in 1908. He was responsible for solving the city’s flooding issues and beautifying the urban areas with greenbelts. Today, the Kessler Park neighborhood is one of the most beautiful in the city, a designated historic district that includes well-maintained examples of Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture.

Trinity

Pay homage to the main water source and the vast urban forest that runs through the city.

Denver, CO

Denver Botanic Gardens

Denver parents get inspiration for their unique baby names from the area's gorgeous landscape, outdoor activities and famous people.

Aspen/Spruce

What could better convey a love for the great outdoors than naming your baby after a tree?

Bronc

It's no surprise that this name is on the list of local favorites, after the Denver Broncos, of course.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth Piper Ensley (three awesome ideas for Denver baby names!) was a Denver reporter for Woman’s Era, a newsletter of the National Association of Colored Women. Her tireless work campaigning for the Colorado Equal Suffrage Association is credited for helping the state to give women the right to vote in 1893.

Lark

The Lark Bunting is the state bird of Colorado and we think it makes a lovely girl name.

Miles

How better to pay homage to the Mile High City than with this classic name?

Vail

This gorgeous name honors the gorgeous ski area of the same name.

Los Angeles, CA

From the city’s iconic landmarks to its natural wonders and most significant residents, there are tons of LA-inspired baby names that make our favorites list.

Find the rest of our favorite LA-inspired names here

Arcadia

There's something beautiful and otherworldly about this name, which makes sense: Not only is the LA neighborhood of Arcadia known for its natural beauty—it's home to the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens—in Greek mythology, Arcadia actually refers to an earthly wilderness paradise where the god Pan lived.

Ennis

If you're into LA architecture, you might know that this name takes its inspiration from the Ennis House, the Los Feliz mansion Frank Lloyd Wright designed for Charles and Mabel Ennis in 1923. After a complete restoration, the sprawling Mayan revival home was listed for a cool $23 million in 2018—which, coincidentally, is the same year this actress named her son Ennis. So you'd be in good company.

Fern

For Fern Dell (sometimes called Ferndell), the meandering kid-friendly trail that takes you into LA's oasis within the city, Griffith Park. And wouldn't Dell make a cute middle name too?

Laurel

Laurel Canyon isn't just the name of a street or a shortcut for getting in and out of the Valley; it embodies an era during the late '60s and '70s when the winding strip above Sunset Blvd. was home to rockers like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and The Eagles. The name captures the free-spirited, peace-and-love vibe of the era without being too "out there."

Minneapolis & St. Paul, MN

necklenoakland via Pixabay

The Twin Cities have some more classic names like Paul and Minnie, but there are a few unique ones that are rising in popularity too.

Dylan

While Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, a city north of the Twin Cities, that doesn’t stop anyone from claiming this Minnesota-born folk star as the inspiration for a baby name.

Francis/Frances/Gerald/Scott

St. Paul born F. Scott Fitzgerald (Francis Scott Fitzgerald) wrote several novels along with dozens of short stories. Other Fitzgerald-inspired names include Benjamin, after The Curious Tale of Benjamin Button along with Fitz as a unique take on his last name. Also popular is the name Zelda, after his wife Zelda Fitzgerald and Daisy and Gatsby, both characters from The Great Gatsby. His own daughter was named Frances, with a slight spelling variation on his first name.

George

After George Bonga, who is believed to be the first person of African-American descent born in the state of Minnesota, his father was African-American and his mother was Ojibwe. He married an Ojibwe woman and was fluent in English, Ojibwe and French, George used these skills to work as an advocate for the indigenous people of Minnesota, in the early to mid 1800s. We’d also be remiss if we did not mention George or Floyd, whose unjust killing in Minneapolis in late May of 2020 sparked a revolution of social justice.

Lena or Olive

After the first Black woman to practice law in the state of Minnesota, Lena Olive Smith. She was also the first female president of the local chapter of the NAACP in 1935.

Missy

This name is inspired by the mighty Mississippi which runs through the heart of the Twin Cities before flowing South toward the Gulf of Mexico.

Mia

This popular baby name is also a nod to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, commonly known as the MIA, a fantastic school and museum that is free to the public.

Prince and Nelson

Prince Rogers Nelson was a phenomenal musician and groundbreaking performing who hailed from the Minneapolis area. Beloved by generations, newbies are popping up with the names Prince and Nelson in his honor.

New York City, NY

unsplash

The NYC baby name options seem limitless, with history-makers, magnates, and iconic figures from every era and discipline, all hailing from, or making their mark on the Big Apple. We rounded up some of the usual suspects and classics, and also looked for some fresh kids’ names that pay tribute to NYC.

Apollo

Sure, it’s a lot to live up to, what with the god of the sun thing and all—but aim high and pay tribute to this legendary Harlem theater at the same time.

Audrey

Yes, Hepburn is strongly associated with NYC thanks to her iconic role of Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but we’re thinking of Audrey Munson, model for scores of major statues around New York City, including the figure atop the Manhattan Municipal Building—second tallest in the city, after Lady Liberty.

Edith

Downtown doyenne (and first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize, thank you very much) Edith Wharton inspires this name from another era.

Hamilton

You’ve heard of this guy. Founding father, first Treasurer of the United States of America, the man behind The U.S. Coast Guard, The New York Post, the Federalist party. And the blockbuster musical. He’s everywhere: Fort Hamilton Parkway, Fort Hamilton, etc.

Lou/Louis

Two musical legends, of different genres. Go downtown cool and pay tribute to Lou Reed, or name-check jazz man Armstrong a New Orleans native who famously settled in Corona, Queens for decades. (You can still visit his house!)

Peggy

Art collector, patron and socialite Peggy Guggenheim left her mark on the city and the world with her wealth and taste.

Wharton

Another nod to novelist Edith, but for boys. (Possible downside: Nickname "Wart.")

Portland, OR

Emily U via yelp

Portland residents love the rain, good coffee and heading outdoors for hiking, river adventures and snow play. It’s no wonder their deep-rooted love for this beautiful city inspires parents when it comes to naming their babies.

Find all of our favorite Portland baby names here

Arleta

During the golden age of Portland's trolley lines in the early 20th century, Arleta Park in SE Portland was platted in 1903 by the Potter-Chapin Realty company. The park was named after Potter's young beloved daughter.

Jantzen

Portland's beloved Jantzen Beach was a popular amusement park in the 1920's. In fact, it was the largest in the nation at the time. The park was named after its investor Carl Jantzen of Jantzen Swimsuit. By the 50's it was shut down, but the area is still lovely and the name has stuck and is well known to locals.

Pearl

The Pearl District is one of Portland's most popular neighborhoods. It's home to the iconic Powell Book (another name idea) and Crystal Ballroom. The area was once called the Northwest Industrial Triangle. Then in the 80's Thomas Augustine, a local gallery owner, renamed it and said he chose the name because the neighborhood's artists, toiling away in old, crusty buildings, were like pearls inside oysters.

Willamette

Built on the beautiful Willamette River, we couldn't leave this name out as a strong Potential for a him, her or they. Sure, it's not common...or even on anyone's radar yet. But hey, we all have to do our part in keeping Portland weird. And our fine city is the perfect place to raise a little Willamette or two.

San Diego, CA

Maverick

Top Gun was filmed in various locations around San Diego including a house in Oceanside, Kansas City Barbeque and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Name your little one after Tom Cruise's bold character in this classic film.

Myrtle

Myrtle Creek Botanical Gardens & Nursery is a secret garden and hidden gem. Filled with happy goats, wild birds, butterflies and fairy gardens, this slice of paradise evokes happiness, joy and respite from life's fast pace.

Torrey

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is the most beautiful place to stroll or hike with ocean views in San Diego. The rare Torrey Pine tree is an endangered species that only grows in the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. It was named after botanist John Torrey and is protected and revered for its uniqueness and scarcity.

San Francisco, CA

Brandon Nelson, via Unsplash

Being a San Francisco parent means you have a big heart and killer calves: you’ve hiked to the top of Nob Hill with a toddler in tow and we’re betting you’ve been on MUNI one too many times while pregnant. Show your love for the City by the Bay with one of these baby names.

Dolores

It’s not just a beautiful street name or your favorite park. It's the namesake of the first mission in SF (which is also home to one of the only cemeteries within the city proper). Even more fun, it's also the name of Dolores Huerta, who fought for migrant worker rights and co-founded National Farm Workers in 1962.

Harvey

Harvey Bernard Milk was the city’s first openly gay official, elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1951. Today we remember Harvey Milk for his courage and tenacity in standing out by standing up—a true San Francisco attitude.

Lowell

Lowell High School is the oldest public high school west of the Mississippi. It was founded in 1856 as the Union Grammar School, but became Lowell in 1894. Though it was separated by genders for a time in its early history, Lowell High School was open to both boys and girls 1866.

Noe

Named for José de Jesús Noé, he served twice as alcade (essentially, a mayor) of Yerba Buena. One of his last acts while serving—along with Lt. Bartlett of the US Navy—was to officially rename Yerba Buena as San Francisco. At one time he owned land that covered much of what we now know as Noe Valley, Eureka Valley, Fairmont Heights, Glen Park and Sunnyside.

He also served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Washington Territory from 1888 to 1889 and was the main representative of railroad tycoon James J. Hill. Nameberry’s Most Popular Baby Names of 2020…So Far

What Are the Most Popular Gender-Neutral Baby Names Across the U.S.?

These Are the Most Popular Baby Names of the Decade

Mexico’s proximity to the US, ease of travel even with kids in tow and dream weather make it a can’t-go-wrong destination for family vacation planning. Most of us think of heading straight to digging our toes in the sand or wading into the clear-as-bathwater ocean when we dream of heading south of the border. But, there’s so much more to the culturally rich Mexico than beach bumming. A visit to the State of Yucatán will find you at the top of ancient pyramids, swapping the ocean for naturally formed pools deep underground swirling with Mayan mystique, exploring welcoming cities with rich histories and finding a new appreciation for the people of Mexico. Read on to hear about our favorite places to discover in Yucatán.

ATV Tour of the City Dressed in Yellow: Izamal

How often do you get to see a color-coordinated city? Here's your chance as it's forever golden hour in Yucatan's magical "Yellow City", IzamalWhen Pope John Paul II announced a visit and mass in 1993, the city got to work painting the town yellow, a revered color in Mayan culture. The long-lasting effect of the decision is a city that gives a sense of peace and serenity when walking amongst its buildings—it's impossible not to smile immersed in the happiest of colors.

Pack along your sense of adventure and take an ATV tour to fully appreciate the monochromatic experience. You'll learn about the history of what is considered the most culturally important Mayan city, zip past the colonial buildings and admire this living-breathing museum to Mayan culture.

Climb to the Top of Kinich Kak Moo

Maria Chambers

The city of Izamal is home to the largest structure on the Yucatan Peninsula, Kinich Kak Moo, thought to be one of the most important Mayan pyramids because of its size. Visitors can climb the pyramid's 10 levels for 360-degree views of Izamal and the jungle below. The city itself tends to not be overrun with tourists, which means the crowds at the ruins are minimal and entrance is free and open to the public.

Be sure to pack sneakers or other shoes with grip because the climb is uneven and steep.

Tour Convent of San Antonio de Padua

Still an active convent, this Franciscan colonial building in Izamal was erected atop the ruins of Pap-Hol-Chac, which was believed to be the largest Mayan pyramid. It was destroyed by the Spaniards and the current structure was built using the same stones from the Mayan site.

Convent of San Antonio de Padua has the distinction of having the largest closed atrium in the Americas and the second-largest in the world, second only to St. Peter's Square in the Vatican. Its size, design and signature Izamal yellow color make it a stunning site to visit.

Take Home a Handmade Hammock

Not all hammocks are created equally, and the best can be found at Cielo Hamacas in Yucatan. Cielo hammocks are handmade by local artisans in their homes, with each hammock taking 5-7 days to complete. Some more intricate designs can take up to a month and over 900 local families work to fulfill orders from all over the world.

In Yucatan, hammocks aren't just an every-once-in-a-while spot to nap. Homes are built with sturdy clips cemented into the walls and many choose this mode of sleeping over a bed. So, these hammocks are made with that in mind—quality, durability and comfort are top-notch. Stop by one of their storefront locations to pick your favorite and see in person the effort that goes into the art of making a hammock.

Make it a Farm Day at Hacienda Zamna

We can promise you'll never want to leave Hacienda Zamna, located 25 minutes from the city of Mérida. Regardless of your equestrian skill level, you can escape to their pastures for 1-4 hour horseback rides with an expert guide. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and pristine, the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and kids will get a kick out of the sheep, goats and pigs they see along the way—they may even get a peek at some newborns!

This is seriously one of the most gorgeous and kindly farms we've come across in our travels. It's a must-see and a beautiful way to spend a day disconnected from technology, but connected as a family.

Ogle at the Beauty of Chichen Itza

Maria Chambers

The pages of your kid’s textbook will come alive with a day trip to see what was left behind from Mexico’s mysterious Mayan civilization. The signature Kukulkan Pyramid that dominates Chichen Itza, also known as El Castillo (the castle), was designated as one of the seven wonders of the world in 2007. Built as a physical representation of the Mayan calendar, it has 91 steps on each of the 4 sides totaling 364 steps and its 9 platforms bisected by a staircase on each side represent the 18 months in a Mayan calendar. It’s a shining example of the Mayan’s phenomenally intriguing understanding of math and astronomy.

Swim Like a Mayan at Ik Kil

Maria Chambers

A must-do if you head in the direction of Chichen Itza is a reprieve from the heat in the cool waters of the 135-feet-deep Ik Kil Cenote. If you’re unfamiliar, cenotes are natural sinkholes from the collapse of limestone that expose groundwater underneath, a natural swimming pool, essentially. And, Ik Kil is arguably one of the most beautiful in all of Mexico. Take the stairs 85 feet below ground level and imagine what it must have been like for the Mayans, who considered this sacred ground. The cold of the water and the natural beauty of the landscape equally pillage your breath.

Let Yourself Feel a Little Hip at Unknown Hotel

New to the scene is Unknown Hotel in Merida's Santiago neighborhood. It's a small boutique hotel, but every detail is well thought out, designed and executed. The goal is for guests to connect with the space and neighborhood and to have nature and architecture merge, which leads to a serene, natural feel to the property.

Each room has a seating area and some have a private plunge pool, as well as access to a swimming pool and garden area, restaurant and bar. It's walkable to shops and restaurants but the inside is so peaceful, you forget you're in a city.

Experience Local Culture at Mercado Santiago

Or any Mercado, for that matter. If you see one, pull over and spend an hour selecting fresh regional produce or enjoying a meal. We highly recommend seeking out food from where the locals eat when you travel to Yucatán and it doesn't get any more authentic than visiting these markets.

Taqueria La Lupita can be found in Mercado Santiago in Merida's Santiago neighborhood. They've specialized in local dishes and snacks like Cochinita Pibil and Lechón al Horno, making their tacos and dishes fresh daily, for more than 40 years. The vibe is extremely low-key and it's a great way to get a feel for the culture as the area's residents go about their day, shopping for and with their families.

Learn More About Local Cuisine & Dine at Museum of Yucateca Gastronomy

In the heart of Merida's cultural district, you'll find Museo de la Gastronomia Yucateca (MUGY) where you can learn more about the history of food in the region, and get a taste of authentic dishes in the restaurant. Behind the museum is a replica of a small Mayan village where visitors can watch fresh tortillas being made, learn about the different spices used in the cuisine and watch (and taste) as the chef digs up pots of local mainstays that are cooked underground daily.

Shop in Awe at Casa T'HO Concept House

Casa T'HO borrows its name from the fallen Mayan city that stood long ago, taken over by the arrival of the conquistadores. The house itself is a former 19th-century mansion with a center courtyard, with nine boutiques and a gourmet restaurant taking up residence in the home's original rooms. The collective of designers draw inspiration from the local region, work with a focus on sustainability and have an eye for the beauty of simplicity.

Take Over Hacienda Katanchel

Hacienda Katanchel operated as a hotel for many years, but now this family-owned 17th-century Spanish colonial hacienda is only available for rent to small private groups. Set in the jungle, the 740 secluded acres is a perfect hideway for a family reunion, wedding or anniversary celebration. The property includes a pool, dining area, villas that include private plunge pools and incredible architectural elements you won't find anywhere else. The husband and wife team ensure there is adequate staff to feed and take care of your group and cover every detail to make sure the stay is special and memorable.

Spoil Yourself at Hacienda Xcanatun

If you've never experienced a Banyan Tree property, now is your chance. The brand is always on-point in all areas: service, design, and attention to detail. Just 15 minutes from downtown Merida, Hacienda Xcanatun's 18 spacious suites were recently renovated to their 18th-century splendor. It's surrounded by 4 acres of private gardens, which include rugged walking trails the kids will enjoy exploring. The Hacienda also has an outdoor pool and spa on site.

Tour the Town of Valladolid

One of the absolutely best-kept secrets in Mexico is the small town of Valladolid. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, Vallalodid's artful architecture, pastel-colored buildings housing boutique shops and hotels, excellent cuisine, and historic churches make it a quaint home base for a visit to Yucatan. In the city center, you'll find free walking tours that we highly recommend. They'll guide you to all the most interesting spots to see in the city and help you get your bearings to explore on your own.

Valladolid is located halfway between Cancun and Merida and is a good place to stay if you want to visit Chichen Itza and the area is rich with cenotes of all sizes.

If you're looking for an interesting dinner spot, La Palapita de los Tamales is a great option. Various regions of Mexico prepare their tamales in different ways—they're wrapped in leaves depending on the vegetation of the region and some are even cooked underground. This spot gives you the opportunity to try versions you may not have tried before.

Test Your Inner Daredevil at Cenote Chukum

Maria Chambers

This 130-foot Cenote Chukum close to the town of Valladolid is one of the more recently opened cenotes in the region, having only been used as a well until that point. Three natural openings in the ceiling above create an ethereal effect when the sun shines in on the turquoise water, which is 65 feet deep. Three diving platforms, ranging 3 to 15 feet above the water give you a chance to show your kids your best swan dive. Or, for the heights-adverse, you can ease into the crisp, cool waters using the stairs. Either way, the experience is absolutely mesmerizing and dreamlike.

Become Enamored by Zazil Tunich Cenote

One of our favorite cenotes near the town of Valladolid is family-owned Zazil Tunich. You'll not only fall in love with the site, but the family that owns it. This is truly a family operation, with the owner's daughters oftentimes conducting tours that make clear their passion and respect for the land and its history.

Zazil Tunich is a cave cenote, meaning there is no hole in the ground above illuminating the waters like the other cenotes we've highlighted. It's considered to be one of the more spectacular in the region because of its thousands of stalagmites and stalactites, including the largest in Yucatan.

Spy on the Flamingos on a Tour of Rio Lagartos

Book a boat tour of Rio Lagartos and experience the natural beauty of this 120,000-acre biosphere reserve, which also happens to be a breeding ground for 40,000 flamingos and is home to gators and 395 species of birds. We recommend touring with family-owned Rio Lagartos Adventures because they are highly particular about running their tours in a way that's respectful to the environment and the animals that call this area home. They dock at the Ria Maya Restaurant and Lodge where you can get a fresh seafood lunch before or after your tour.

Anyone who lives in Dallas knows that it’s not only the norm but also highly encouraged to go big or go home. That’s why we’ve curated a list of baby names that not only make a statement but also pay homage to the history and culture of Big D. From famous TV characters to historical figures whose contributions have made the city the place it is today, scroll down to see our favorite monikers that swagger in a way that folks living in Dallas (and the surrounding metroplex) can replicate with ease.

Gabby Cullen

J.R.

As in John Ross Ewing, as in the patriarch of the iconic ‘80s show Dallas. Played by legendary actor Larry Hagman, J.R. is as synonymous with the city of Dallas as is its NFL team, the Dallas Cowboys.

Kennedy

Dallas is forever a major part of American history—for being the place where JFK was assassinated. The Sixth Floor Museum and the grassy knoll are one of the most visited landmarks in the city.

Austin

It might be the state capital, but it’s also the last name of Lloyd G. Austin, a pastor at St. John Missionary Baptist, in the all-black community of Mosier Valley, for over 40 years. He was also an early presence in North Texas race relations during the late ‘50s, as he and his family were one of the first African-American families to buy a home in an all-white neighborhood of Fort Worth. They withstood and ultimately prevailed over direct attempts to be ousted from the community.

Gabby Cullen

Dallas

If you’re going to honor Big D, why not just go with the city itself?

Emmett

Emmett Smith is known as one of the best running backs of all time, and he spent a majority of his career playing for the Dallas Cowboys. During the team’s ‘90s heyday, he won three Super Bowls with the team. He is the only running back to win a Super Bowl, an MVP of the Year award (both for the Super Bowl and the entire NFL) and an NFL rushing crown all in the same season. He also was a very popular contestant (he won!) on the third season of Dancing with the Stars in 2006.

Ross

Ross Perot garnered national attention as the businessman who ran for President as an Independent in 1992, against Bill Clinton and George Bush Sr. But, for those who live in Dallas, he’s also the billionaire philanthropist for whom the award-winning Perot Museum of Nature & Science is named.

Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara

Guests of the Resort's Jungle Rooms and higher categories have access to the glamorous and wow-worthy Coral Casino Beach & Cabana Club. Here you can dive in to one of the world's largest swimming pools, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands. There's also a smaller pool for young kids and a large whirpool you can relax in while soaking up ocean views. Private Cabanas are also available that come complete with staff to attend to you.

Seamlessly enjoy both the pool and the beach via the Club's private, gated stairway to Butterfly Beach. Plan on heading up to the sundeck to watch the sun set over the ocean each evening.

Beth Shea

As mentioned above, it's a truly priceless experience to be just footsteps away from the pristine Butterfly Beach during your stay. Surf, swim, watch the sunset and stroll the beach at your leisure. There's no need to pile in the car or navigate to find the best stretch of sand, because it's right there at your feet.

Welcoming Amenities Especially for Kids

Beth Shea

Four Seasons The Biltmore Santa Barbara welcomes kids upon arrival by letting them choose from an adorable selection of Beanie Babies. Ty Warner, the creator of Beanie Babies owns the Resort, and this thoughtful touch makes kids feel comfortable and special right from the start. Kids will also love the "Fun in the Sun" toiletry kit waiting especially for them in their room. Made exclusively for the Resort, the kit contains dreamy-scented, soothing and natural bubble bath, conditioner and body wash.

You can also take advantage of the complimentary Kids for All Seasons program. Available for kids ages 5-12, the professionally run program keeps kiddos entertained and happy while you're on a date, at the Spa or enjoying some me-time. Hours: during the festive season, 7 days a week 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Off-season, Sat. only, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., peak season, 7 days a week, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Luxurious & Comfortable Rooms

Beth Shea

The guest rooms are impeccable, equal parts luxurious and cozy, and decorated with a combination of modern elegance and Spanish colonial style. We loved the spacious Jungle Room that includes a furnished outdoor terrace in a garden setting with soothing fountains. Some Jungle Rooms come with additional connecting rooms to accommodate families who need more space. Suites, bungalows and villas are also available, depending on the size of room you need and your budget.

Bike Rentals on Property

Beth Shea

For a nominal fee, you can rent bikes from the Spa right on property and take one (or more) of several scenic and memorable bike paths from the Resort. We recommend the 3 mile coastal bike path that runs from the Resort to the harbor and downtown's State Street. They offer an array of bikes and beach cruisers to suit your whole family, from kid-sized to adult-sized, and they include helmets, bottled water, bike locks and bike maps.

Also good to know: the Resort offers complimentary, continuous shuttle service on Fridays (4-9 p.m.) and Saturdays (1-9 p.m.) to and from downtown Santa Barbara, with drop off and pick up service from any location within a five-mile radius of the Resort. Go enjoy shopping on nearby State Street without having to worry about parking.

Delicious Dining with Ocean Views

Beth Shea

Dine on local and fresh, organic, Italian-inspired California-coastal cuisine and soak in opulent ocean and island views at the Resort's Bella Vista restaurant, where kids ages 5 and younger eat free. You may get extra lucky and spy seals or dolphins splashing about in the distance as you enjoy your meal.

Whether you're in the mood for the Santa Barbara Harbour Seafood Platter, the fresh house-made pasta dishes or the Portobello Piccata, there's a dish to delight everyone and to accommodate any dietary needs on Bella Vista's menu.

Young diners will surely find their perfect meal on the extensive kids' menu (for ages 5-12) which includes items ranging from waffles, pancakes and breakfast burritos to start the day to all day offerings like a kid-spin on a steak salad, fried chicken sandwich, veggie burger or skinless salmon. Eye-popping dessert options for kids include a decorate your own cupcake platter with assorted toppings and an ooey-gooey brownie sundae

We appreciated all of the delicious vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options that were available on both the kids' menu and regular menus.

Bella Vista is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they offer brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

Food Prepared Especially for Kids & A Heavenly Buffet

Beth Shea

Treat the fam to the Biltmore Champagne Sunday Brunch and you'll all think you're in heaven. This buffet-style brunch includes bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys as well as endless decadent dessert works of art and savory options at sushi stations, omelette and soup bars and so much more. At $85/person, it's worth every penny. There's even a table dedicated to kid diners that's full of fare like chicken tenders, fruit skewers, PB&J sandwiches, grilled cheese and Jello.

Don't miss the Little Chef Experience! Offered daily, kids ages 5-12 can take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Resort Kitchen, enjoy a meet-and-greet with the chefs, cupcake decorating, and they'll get a chef hat and apron! $40/per child––perfect for young foodies.

Pickleball & Tennis Courts

Beth Shea

Get sporty with your crew and reserve a complimentary pickleball or tennis court via the Resort's concierge. If your kiddo's can't quite swing it for tennis yet, pickleball is a super fun option on a smaller court with larger paddles that make it easier to get the ball over the net.

Additional Resort activities to keep you all entertained include croquet and a putting green.

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

Beth Shea

Consider The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden's temporary exhibit, Garden Casitas: Playhouses Designed with Nature in Mind (running now through Feb. 29, 2020) a must-see! Kids will love exploring six playhouses created by local designers that are constructed using plant-based materials. Shown above is the Big-eared Woodrat House. Each house has an informational plaque by it with fun facts such as: "big-eared woodrats (Neotoma macrotis) are nocturnal and forage for leaves, plants, and seeds during the night. If they come across anything shiny or cool-looking, they will carry it back to their nests for display." Kids will delight in all of the playhouses they can climb through and explore. It's an unbeatable way to spend an afternoon.

Even if you don't make it in time to catch this exhibit, a visit to this Botanic Garden is a peaceful family outing that's not to be missed. Here you can roam through towering Redwoods, follow the Canyon Trail across Mission Creek, enjoy an array of family-friendly programming and so much more!
