Waiting for that one big vacation that takes you overseas or across the country can be real hard once summer rolls around. Ease the longing by planning out a bunch of smaller staycations that allow you to take in Portland like a tourist. From outdoor excursions to winding wine country experiences to urban adventures, we’ve put together the best Portland staycation experiences for every type of family.

Go To The Mountain

Head to Mt. Hood for a daytrip or staycation at Timberline Lodge and enjoy some summer skiing! That’s right, this spot has snow in the summer. It also offers visiting families epic hikes, including access to the iconic Pacific Crest Trail. If your kids love to travel on two wheels, you’re in luck. There are tons of bike trails to explore that take you through towering trees and offer families epic views.

After being one with nature and getting some solitude from the masses, book it to the lodge where you can hit one of their restaurants or book a room and stay the night. Timberline Lodge offers an array of room options that fit can accommodate families of all sizes while providing a true “deep woods getaway” experience.

If you really worked up an appetite, swing by Hood River to enjoy Italian wines and some nibbles at Marchesi Winery, rock-solid brews at Full Sail Brewery, or a mix of American cuisine at Skamania Lodge.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors.

One of the best hikes in Oregon is located in a rural town close to Salem: Silver Falls. The hikes are rolling and easy, even on little ones with dramatic falls. And there’s a lodge nearby with snacks and bathrooms. While you’re there, check out the Tulip Farm or wander though the Oregon Garden. Bonus: See the only Frank Lloyd Wright house in Oregon.

Get Your Game On

Do you have a family full of gamers? You don’t have to stay home to get some good gaming time in. Quarter World is and old-school hangout with a variety of arcade games and pinball machines, plus a full bar that serves pizza. It welcomes gamers of all ages on the weekends. Not done playing arcade games? Joystick on over to Ground Kontrol, an arcade in Northwest Portland, where you can play everything from Pacman to pinball. Ground Kontrol also has beverages, including the adult kind, and food.

But that’s not all Portland has to offer both old-school gamers and new. Make sure to check out Grand Central Bowling where you can take your gaming to the alley and when you’re done, you can hit the arcade and grab a bite to eat in the diner!

A Downtown Portland Staycation

For a real staycation experience, head downtown for the day to take in one of Portland’s most beloved spots. Tom McCall Waterfront Park, where the family can stroll and play along the walking path that follows the Willamette River. Stop and let the kids cool off and play in the Salmon Street Springs, and interactive water fountain controlled by and underground computer.

But that’s not all downtown watefront has to offer. Go to the best urban garden in Portland – the Lan Su Chinese Gardens. It’s close to Waterfront Park and blooming cherry blossoms and flowering plums. Take pictures of our bridges and the Willamette River with the kids. Hungry? Old Town Pizza is a favorite pizzeria close by. If it’s the weekend, you can stop at the Saturday Market to get handmade soaps, t-shirts, and bird houses. And why not finish up the day with an art-lover’s experience. The Portland Art Museum and stroll through a variety of exhibits ranging from paintings and photography to sculptures, there’s something for everyone.

Sound like a real vacation? Make it so with an overnight at the Woodlark, a Provenance Hotel, located downtown. It offers families suites with luxurious beds, living-room like sitting areas and there are even amenities for the family pet! You’ll love it so much that when you have the grandparents come visit, you’ll have them book a suite for themselves just so that you can visit!

Wind Your Way to Wine Country

Who doesn’t want to experience a wine country getaway? Head to McMinville where you can spend hours in the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum that has Howard Hughes’ all-wood airplane, the Spruce Goose, and a giant indoor waterpark, too. When you are done, you can also stop by various wineries like Dominio IV and Remy Wines. Not far away is a small town called Mt. Angel where there’s an abbey and some of the best German food you’ll eat. Afterward, go to St. Paul and enjoy two of the best wineries in the area: Lady Hill Winery and Sinnean. (They’re even next door to each other!)

Enjoy Vancouver

Step back in time; Vancouver is home to a historic site and fur-trading outpost: Fort Vancouver. Established by the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Columbia Department, it boasts housing a number of military elite, including Ulysses S. Grant before he became a U.S. president. A fantastic playground and Pearson Air Museum are a stone’s throw away. While at Pearson, don’t miss the video about the history of Southern Washington, covering everything from the Native Americans who fished the Columbia to the women who built World War II ships. The kids will love the library in Vancouver, and there’s reciprocity if you live in Portland; you can check out books. The children’s section is one the best in the area and definitely worth your time.

Beach, Berries & Bloedel Day

Richard Probst via flickr

Morning
The north end of the island offers a little something for everyone in the fam. Start the day at the Bloedel Reserve, a 150-acre garden, featuring different landscapes to explore, like the woodlands, the glen, the reflecting pool and the Japanese Garden outside the guesthouse. Kids will love the freedom to explore the trails and the chance to spot wildlife along the way. Bloedel is open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and timed tickets are required. After a peaceful start, take the kids berry picking. Raspberries are in season in late summer at Suyematsu Farms, and pickers can get their fill daily, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. (psst… raspberry season usually ends the first week in August). Blueberries are another summer U-pick fave. Find them on the island at Bainbridge Island Blueberry Co. They should be ready in early July, but call the berry hotline at (206) 673-7812 to make sure things are up and running before you go.

Afternoon
The afternoon is all about parks; two to be exact. Bring lunch to Fay Bainbridge and pull up a picnic table with a killer view. Here you’ll find a new pirate-themed playground for kids to climb and slide on, and an expansive beach to explore, once lunch is done. End the day at Battle Point Park. Although the playground is out of commission, families can walk, bike or scooter along the paved trails that encircles the property, and the massive fields make it easy to play catch or Frisbee or kick a soccer ball with the kids. In late summer, it’s one of the island’s hot spots for blackberries (feel free to pick 'em!). Also in August, the park district will host drive-in movies at Battle Point on Friday nights. Sounds like a great start to a weekend getaway!

Where to Eat
You can find breakfast, lunch and dinner bites at Coppertop Park. No matter what time hunger strikes, Sweet Dahlia Baking has got a meal to match with curbside pick-up. Their family-style Dinner Club meals (served Thursdays and Fridays) are convenient if an overnight stay is on the menu. That’s a Some Pizza is another easy option to feed the crew, and both Fletcher Bay Winery and Bainbridge Island Brewing offer outdoor seating with a green light to outside food.

Market, Art & Playground Day

Allison Sutcliffe

Morning
Whether it’s your first or fifteenth time on the island, a trip to Bainbridge wouldn’t be complete without spending time downtown. Even with coronavirus, this shopping district offers plenty of things for families to do. Start the day browsing the Farmer’s Market, held Saturdays, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Winslow Town Square parking lot. Then it’s off to the Scrappy Art Lab to get those kid-creative juices flowing. Spend time making art in the lab, or take an art jar or grab bag home to enjoy later. Psst... they also have a kid drop-off program on Saturdays.

Allison Sutcliffe

Afternoon
Spend the afternoon outside at Owen’s Playground in Rotary Park. This all-abilities playground is the stuff kid dreams are made of, with artistic equipment, a spot to experiment with sand and water and a butterfly garden that will delight toddlers and big kids alike. From there, head to Pritchard Park to enjoy easy forest walks, sandy beaches and a little bit of history. Looking back on Seattle from the viewpoint (or the beach) is worth the trip, as is spending time at the Japanese Exclusion Memorial. This small national park is a solemn place to reflect and learn about the 120,000 Japanese people who were put in camps during WWII. The wall lists the names of families exiled from Bainbridge, and the memorial serves as a reminder to “Nidoto Nai Yoni”…“let it not happen again.” Remember to have your junior rangers earn their badge when they visit. Families can download the ranger booklet online, work through the activities and then have a park ranger give the thumbs up Fridays through Sundays.

Where to Eat
When you're staying downtown, finding good eats is easy. Start the day with a baked good from Couquette, the cute cart parked in front of the Winslow Mall or Blackbird Bakery. Thuy’s is where it’s at for lunch, especially if pho or bahn mi is what you’re craving. Order takeout and then grab a seat under the umbrella tables just outside to enjoy your food. Follow it up with a scoop from Mora Iced Creamery. This local fave should not be missed, even on a chilly day. For dinner, you can’t go wrong with the new offerings from Cafe Hitchcock

Pleasant Paddle & Waterfront Day

Allison Sutcliffe

Morning
The best part of an island adventure? It’s got to be all the beachside activities. Start at Pleasant Beach Village, a sweet little shopping district on the water. There are a few ways to access the beach here. Use road end access to get to Lytle Beach, a sandy oasis where kids can dip their toes or go all in while watching the ferries travel between the city and Bremerton. Shel Chelb is another point of entry. Across from this small, natural playground, families can access the beach for swimming, rock throwing or sandcastle building. But if rocky shores are what your crew is after, head to Point White Pier, just down the road and park the car. Then enjoy views from the rocky beach across the street as you search for sea creatures under rocks at low tide.

Afternoon
Take the afternoon to explore Eagle Harbor by kayak or SUP. Bring your own from home or connect with Exotic Aquatics. They’re open for rentals and guided tours, and recommend that families make reservations for the trip.

Allison Sutcliffe

Where to Eat
One of the reasons spending the day on the south end of the island is easy is because they’ve got eateries to match every appetite. Hammy’s is every burger lover’s dream. Enjoy it at a nearby beach or sit down outside to dig into your juicy burger. The Treehouse Café (open daily 4-9 p.m.) is currently seating at 50% capacity, and they have an outdoor patio where families can share a pizza and a salad. If sweets are what you’re after Island Cool Frozen Yogurt will chill you out, while Pleasant Beach Donuts will leave you wanting more. These donuts are all the rage on the island right now and the bakers should be back from spring break soon. Be sure to check their website for updates.

Make it a Weekend

Marshall Suites via yelp

With so many ways to spend time on the island, it’s easy to turn your daycation into a staycation. If you’re looking for a place to stay, we’ve got a few family-friendly options to consider. Because hotel pools are always a hit with kids, the Quality Inn & Suites is a good spot to start. It’s pet-friendly and just down the road from Strawberry Hill Park and Winslow. If having a small kitchen (sans stove) makes your stay easier, try the newly-renovated Marshall Suites.

Eastlaker B. via yelp

For an upscale feel, check into the Inn at Pleasant Beach. Situated in the heart of Lynwood, next to beaches and dining, each suite has its own personality, and your stay includes access to the pool, complete with a kiddie wading area. For something totally different, try Wacky Nut Farm, a working horse farm where families will enjoy the amenities of home in a shared guesthouse. Tucked away, yet still close to downtown, this is a great option any time.

Know Before You Go:
1. We recommend downloading the WSDOT app to get real-time ferry info to make traveling with the kiddos easier.

2. Because you know the kiddos will need one, keep this list of public restrooms handy when you head out to explore.

Spend the Night in a Covered Wagon

Melissa Heckscher

Where: Vista, CA
Distance from DTLA: 2 hours

Want to make California history come alive? Tell your kids about how settlers crossed the U.S. in covered wagons...then go spend the night in one! This unique spot takes glamping up a notch with its two fully-outfitted covered wagon rentals. Each wagon has a king-sized bed and a bunk bed inside, plus cushions and a bench for one more sleeper if you've got a family of five. Both wagons have heat and electricity, plus a detached private bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower that are surprisingly upscale for "frontierland."

An assortment of yard games including cornhole, ladder ball, and giant Connect Four are also available to entertain the kids (and adults).

If you've got grandparents in town who don't want to rough it on the frontier, the property also has two adjacent hacienda homes for rent, so they can live it up with wifi and flat screens while you're just next door gloriously unplugged.

Rates start at $165 per night.

Hint: We recommend finding friends and booking both wagons, which allow your kids to have the whole space around the wagons to themselves.

Escape to This Luxurious Ranch in the Forest

Calamigos Ranch

Where: Malibu
Distance from DTLA: 45 minutes

If you like your getaways more "ranch chic" than rustic camp, Calamigos Ranch is your spot. Nestled amid the Santa Monica Mountains, the 250-acre historic ranch property is one of those places that make you feel like you're miles away...without being very far away at all. Besides the pristinely decorated rooms and private cottages (that reflect the admittedly high price point), the ranch has a plethora of activities for families of all ages: Wander the trails, take a paddleboat out onto the pond, swim in the pool, grab a shuttle to the private beach, or grab a bite at the cafe. Kids can also take a walk to visit the ranch's cows, Mali-Moo and Moofus, or horses Prince and Storm. There's also a bustling outdoor cafe nestled into a grassy clearing (it's open to non-guests, too), where kids can have fun with games like giant chess, Connect 4, giant Jenga, and corn hole.

If all that's not enough, the resort also offers pizza-making classes for kids, horseback riding, and on-site guided hikes, as well as an assortment of offsite activities in the nearby mountains.

Rates start at $665 per night.

Get Your Island Vibes

Unsplash

Where: Catalina
Distance from DTLA: 90 minutes (including a 60-minute boat ride)

Get your whale-watching fix (it's migration season through the end of April) and your island groove at the same time with a quick getaway to LA's closest island neighbor. Located just a one-hour boat ride away from either San Pedro or Long Beach harbor, Catalina Island offers a myriad of activities including kayaking, zip-lining (for children over 10), jeep tours (for children over 6), bison-spotting safaris, and mini-golf—as well as a smorgasbord of shopping options amid the walkable downtown area.

For privacy and social-distancing purposes, an Airbnb or VRBO rental is probably your best bet, though you'd need transportation to and from if the rental is outside of town (to your kids' delight, you can rent a golf cart by the hour on the island). This Airbnb ($394 per night) includes the use of its golf cart and has killer ocean views. This modern villa ($341 per night) offers views galore and looks like it belongs in the Greek Isles.

If you'd rather opt for a hotel, try the Catalina Canyon Resort and Spa or the Avalon Hotel.

Cozy Up in the Mountains

Airbnb

Where: Lake Arrowhead
Distance from DTLA: 1 1/2 hours

Who says Spring Break has to be a warm-weather affair? Head to Lake Arrowhead and in under two hours, you'll be far enough from warm SoCal to get you into the snuggle-up-by-the-fire, Swiss chalet sort of mentality. Not sure where to stay? There are loads of great Airbnbs to choose from, including this classic A-frame cabin that comes with a game room and treetops view; this pristine cabin with bunk beds, a pool table, and sprawling deck; or this vintage craftsman home that feels just like a fairy tale Grandma's cottage in the woods.

Weather in April is generally cooler than LA, averaging in the 40s and 50s (with the occasional late-spring snow, if you're lucky!), so dress warm and bring chains for your car tires.

Where to Play Outdoors in LA: The Best Playgrounds in Every Neighborhood

Summer is in full swing, and that means you’ve already exhausted all your great ideas to keep the kids busy. Maybe it’s time for a family vacation, minus the hassle and cost of flying with kids. Consider an awesome staycation right here in D.C., or opt for a short road trip to the beach or mountains instead. We’ve found the best staycation ideas for families, you can see them all below. What are you waiting for? Go pack!

Wharf DC

Ted Eytan via Flickr

Play

Washington’s newest neighborhood will easily make you forget you’re in the nation’s capital. The 24-acre waterfront site is home to a zillion–seriously, we counted–activities for kids and adults including oversized Scrabble, bocce, a splash fountain, swings and ice skating or mini-golf, depending on the season. Rent a kayak or paddleboard from the Wharf Boathouse on the Recreation Pier or listen to a concert on the Floating Stage. Through Aug. 21, the Transit Pier has free concerts on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. featuring R&B, Motown, jazz, reggae and pop music. Use the free District Wharf App, available on iTunes and Google Play, to go on a treasure hunt for 30 historic markers and plaques.

If–OK, when–the whining starts, hop on a free Wharf Jitney and sail across Washington Channel to East Potomac Park, which has plenty of green space and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Other options include taking the free Southwest Shuttle to the National Mall or hopping on a Water Taxi to Georgetown or Old Town Alexandria. Also, not far from the Wharf sits the newly reopened and relocated International Spy Museum, where kids ages 7 & up can enjoy interactive exhibits and see the tools that make spying both a science and an art. Another off-the-beaten-path museum is Artechouse, which marries art and technology, making for a few mesmerizing, Insta-worthy exhibits.

Eat

You can’t go to the Wharf and not stop at the Municipal Fish Market, the oldest continuously operating open-air fish market in the country. If taking home raw, fresh fish as a souvenir is your thing, this is your place. But you can also get cooked dishes onsite. For instance, Captain White Seafood City will steam your order and have it ready for pickup, and Jessie Taylor Seafood sells cooked shrimp and crabs and shucked oysters.

If dessert is more your thing, there are plenty of options, including District Doughnut, Dolcezza Gelato, and Ben and Jerry’s, which has cases full of dipped and decorated waffle cones. The Southwest Soda Pop Shop sells throwback treats like Firecracker pops and root beer floats. During the summer, check out Camp Wharf at the District Square Firepit, which sells s’mores made with Oreos and shaved-ice snowballs in flavors such as tamarind, lemonade and blue raspberry.

Stay

Hunker down at the Hyatt House Washington DC/The Wharf. Three blocks south lies the National Mall, where more traditional D.C. treasures await, including the Smithsonian museums, monuments and the U.S. Capitol. Plus, the hotel has a seasonal, heated rooftop pool that’s open from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you want to make the trip a true family affair, bring Fido or Fifi, too. The Hyatt House is pet-friendly to housebroken dogs weighing less than 50lbs. Another option is the new InterContinental Washington D.C.–The Wharf, which also has a rooftop pool that overlooks the Potomac River and the marina.

Georgetown

Play

If beautiful parks are your thing, make sure to check out Dumbarton Oaks. Kids will love meandering through the vibrant greenery, winding pathways and colossal fountains. Be sure to check out the historic landmark, Tudor Place, which has been a fixture in DC since 1816 and has served as a home to descendants of Martha Washington for six generations. The chic house has furnishings, household items and fascinating Washington-related artifacts. The five-plus acres worth of gardens on the estate make for a scenic outdoor adventure.

No trip to G-town is complete without visiting the striking campus of Georgetown University. Established in 1789, GU is one of the world’s leading academic and research institutions. Hoya Saxa is palpable throughout Georgetown, and they love to see mini, future Hoyas roaming around campus.

Shop

Need to pick something up for the baby or want to pamper yourself? Pay Take Care a visit. It’s a great little store, in the heart of Georgetown, that sells natural beauty, baby and home products. It’s so pretty—truly an Instagrammer’s dream!

Eat

Hungry and need to get some wiggles out? Head over to Pinstripes, the family-friendly game space–which merges an Italian-American menu with 14 bowling lanes and six bocce courts in an enormous 32,000 square foot space that borders the canal. For a sweet treat, look for the pink bicycle outside Baked & Wired for everything scrumptious from bread to granola to cupcakes. Prefer macarons to cupcakes? Check out the head of the macaron monarchy on M St., Ladurée.

Stay

If you really want to make your jaunt special, spend the night in one of Georgetown’s most exclusive hotels, The Four Seasons. But, guess what? ... it’s totally kid friendly! Book one of their special 25% off Suites offer: a family of four can fit very comfortably, and the parents can enjoy the privacy of their own room. When you check-in, your kids will be welcomed with a red wagon full of toys, and you can even request a special teepee set up for the kids in the rooms. A few fun, complimentary items you can ask for as part of a childproof guest room include cribs, high chairs and playpens, child-size bathrobes, baby & children's toiletries, toys, coloring books and board games, Wii and video games. Intrigued by room service? Younger kids will get personalized homemade cookies shaped in the form of the Tic-Tac-Toe game to play with before enjoying: older kids will get a sweet tribute to the US, two brownies with American flag motif, decorated with sprinkles.

Annapolis, MD

Play

The Chesapeake Bay is the heart and soul of Maryland. Famous for its blue crabs and mouthwatering oysters, her sandy shores and nippy, fresh water are a playground for water lovers. Both Maryland and America’s Sailing Capital, Annapolis is a charming historic town and a great place to visit with kids. Founded in 1649, its colonial city center is small and easy to navigate. But the highlight is that it’s surrounded by a bustling waterfront full of boats. Kids love to walk around, grab an ice cream cone and just gaze at the beautiful vessels.

Annapolis is also home to the U.S. Naval Academy. You can take a guided tour of the Academy, to see what life is like as a midshipman, or just walk around campus. Make sure to check out the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center, where you can get information about what to see on campus and admire some of the naval artifacts at the U.S. Naval Academy Museum.

The Annapolis Maritime Museum is a great resource to teach kids about the deep maritime heritage of Annapolis. The Museum is home to McNasby’sOysterPacking Company, the last remaining oyster packing plant in the area. Located on the waterfront, the Museum teaches visitors how to harvest oysters, allows them to climb aboard a native workboat and explore artifacts. There is also an 850-gallon oyster tank that kids love to observe.

Eat

Get your fix of seafood and waterfront views at Sams on the Waterfront. Snag a spot on the outdoor patio and enjoy Maryland favorites like crab cakes and locally-raised oysters while the kids watch the boats. The restaurant’s got awesome happy hour specials every day of the week, but we especially love the family-friendly perk on Thirsty Thursday: kids 12 & under eat for free!

Stay

Book a night at the recently renovated, Westin Annapolis. Located just minutes from downtown Annapolis, the Westin is the perfect combination of relaxation and fun. They offer modern rooms and suites even have an indoor pool.

Loudon County, VA

Patrick McCay

Play

Sure, it sounds forever away, sitting almost 45 miles from D.C., but it’s worth braving the region’s notorious traffic to literally head for the hills.

Nature lovers can hit Harper’s Ferry Adventure Center, which has zip lines, an aerial park, tubing and river rafting. For something tamer but still outside, head to Great Country Farms in Bluemont, an unincorporated part of the county that’s also its highest, at an elevation of 680 feet. For $8/kid and $10/adult, enjoy a day of picking seasonal fruit and vegetables while playing on attractions such as a giant jumping pillow, slides, a ninja course, mazes and Cow Pie Putt-Putt (really).

When all else fails, tell the kids to take a hike–and then join them. The storied Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes just west of Loudoun County.

Of course, there are many indoor activities in Loudoun, too. In Sterling there’s the Sportrock Climbing Center, Hogback Mountain Paintball and Ultrazone Loudoun laser tag, while Ashburn has TopGolf, iFly Loudoun indoor skydiving, movie theaters and EXIT Plan escape rooms.

Eat

Bluemont Vineyard, a relative of Great Country Farms, has flatbread pizzas, crab dip and a cast iron cookie with ice cream that should keep the kids busy while you sample wines. Or take in the history at the Tuscarora Mill Restaurant. Set in a historic grain mill that dates to 1899, it has a kids menu with flank steak, shrimp pasta, chicken strips and more. Grab some grub in Middleburg, a charming town established in 1787 by an American Revolutionary War lieutenant colonel. The Red Fox Inn and Tavern has served guests since 1728, making it the oldest continually operating inn in the country. Although some of the dining options skew fancy, the tavern’s weekend brunch has three choices for children 10 & under: French toast, chicken tenders and mac and cheese.

Stay

Rent a cabin at Harpers Ferry or bring your own camping gear to make the most of your proximity to all things outdoor adventure. But if the great indoors calls, answer at Landsowne Resort and Spa, which has a pool, hiking trails, bikes for rent, footgolf, horseshoes, and tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. OK, so we said it has a pool, but that’s an understatement. It has an indoor heated lap pool that is open year-round, and the outdoor Aquatic Center, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, has five pools, including a zero-depth one, an interactive fountain and a waterslide.

Ocean City, MD

Play

Um, it’s the beach, so take to the sand and call it a day. But if you need more, Ocean City has more. Go for rides at the boardwalk amusement parks: Trimper’s Rides, which has been run by the same family for more than a century, or Jolly Roger Amusement Park, which has waterslides, roller coasters, a ginormous Ferris wheel and more.

For boardwalk oddities, spend some time perusing in Ripley’s Believe It or Not, featuring weird things like shrunken heads that will blow your mind.

Or have free fun by joining the Family Beach Olympics on Tuesday evenings, when parents and kids partake in sandcastle contests, tug-of-war and relay races. Celebrate a victory or shake off a loss at the weekly Beach Dance Party on Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. at Caroline Street Stage. A calmer option is Movies on the Beach happening at 118th and 27th streets, while the Ocean City Lifesaving Station Museum offers free summer programs for kids on Mondays through Saturdays on subjects such as knot tying and Ocean City history.

Eat

There is no shortage of food choices here. For a meal, try Longboard Café, which has a “Little Grommies” menu with burgers, pizza and the like, or Fish Tales, which has the city’s original and largest enclosed playground. On the boardwalk, enjoy snacks such as popcorn, ice cream and candy.

Stay

Guys, the Francis Scott Key Family Resort has “family” right there in its name. The hotel has several pools including the outdoor Shipwreck Cove and Pirate Ship Sprayground and Caribbean Key Indoor Pool, maintained at a comfy 84 degrees. Another option is the Castle in the Sand Hotel, which has kids activities such as arts and crafts, silly hat day, face and body painting and making messages in a bottle. Right on the ocean, it also has an Olympic-size swimming pool and sand volleyball court. Plus, the Mermaid Show magic and comedy show is a big hit with the littles.

Set to open in spring 2020, those that opt to purchase now will receive a preview day of the park, a year of admission, and discounts at the onsite themed hotel.
