The Environmental Working Group, a non-partisan health and environmental watchdog group, released its Dirty Dozen List for 2021. The annual roundup of non-organic produce tests for high levels of pesticides that include chemicals to keep away rodents, insects, and mold.

This year, the study found that nearly 70 percent of non-organic produce sampled tested positive for pesticides. Here is the EWG’s breakdown of the 12 “dirtiest” produce for 2021.

12. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a the cusp of moving out of the dirty dozen, but at this point still contain residues that result in a cause for concern. When in doubt, go organic.

11. Celery

Celery slipped out of the top 10 of the dirty dozen but still contains enough residue to steer you towards organic.

10. Bell & Hot Peppers

Bell and hot peppers haven’t been tested in years and the result was finding they had the most pesticides detected––115 to be exact.

9. Pears

We don’t know the exact amount, but pears were found by the EWG to contain enough pesticide residues to warrant a spot as number nine.

8. Peaches

Peaches are number eight but they were found to contain at least two pesticide residues in over 90 percent of those sampled.

7. Cherries

Coming in at number seven, more than 90 percent of non-organic cherries were found to have residues of two or more pesticides.

6. Grapes

Not a ton of data was shared about the pesticides found on grapes, but the fact that it’s number six on the list has us steering clear of the non-organic kind.

5. Apples

When you switch to organic apples you’ll be avoiding tons of pesticides. Apples were found to contain at least two types.

4. Nectarines

Nectarines come in at four, with more than 90 percent of samples testing positive for two or more pesticides.

3. Kale

A single sample of kale was found to have up to 20 different pesticides, one of which is DCPA a possible human carcinogen.

2. Spinach

Runner-up in the dirty dozen, sampled spinach had 1.8 times as much pesticide residue as any other crop tested. In addition, this leafy green was in the group for testing positive for two or more pesticides.

1. Strawberries

In no surprise, strawberries stayed at number one for the sixth year in a row. Ninety percent of the total samples had at least one pesticide, while 30 percent had residues of 10 or more pesticides.

There’s no question when it comes to strawberries: pay a few extra bucks and buy organic, so you can eat your berries with confidence that you are eating pesticide-free!

What You Can Do

To keep your family out of harm’s way, it’s imperative to shop organic when it comes to the Dirty Dozen list for fruits and vegetables. If you can’t buy organic (and even if you do), you should always wash your produce thoroughly before cutting, peeling, cooking, or consuming.

Parents around the world know there is something magical about a new plush friend. The whimsical French toy line Les Déglingos, translated into English as “The Wackos” uses corduroy fabric to create a collection of beloved creatures. Now American families can find them at independent toy and specialty retail shops stateside thanks to importer TriAction Toys.

Les Déglingos

Big Simply Hippipos the Hippo in Tube is one of five animal characters that will soothe and enchant your little one. It may be hard to choose one among Flamingo, Ostrich, Tiger or Llama as each plush pal offers its own charm. One thing’s for certain, your child will cherish their new lovey from birth to freshman orientation.

Les Déglingos

“Les Déglingos was founded in early 2007 by Laurent Manceron in France,” explains TriAction Toys’ Chris Cofoni. “Laurent’s idea was to bring very innovative and funky designs to the market, steering away from the common pastel plush toys available at the time. He was the first designer to design plush using corduroy and the material’s success in the plush toy market has been imitated widely since.”

Les Déglingos

If you feel like you may have seen this toy before, it may be from one of its many cameo appearances on many movie sets and the TV series Modern Family.

Les Déglingos

This plush line is the perfect gift for baby showers, holidays and birthdays. The decorative “tube” packaging is just as appealing as the plush tucked inside. Artistic drawings of each animal face mimic their unique characters.

Les Déglingos are machine washable in cold/warm water and have no parts that present a choking hazard. Each product is tested to comply with European regulations (EN71), USA regulations (ASTM) and REACH (AZO for colorants in the fabrics).

Look for these five corduroy pals, each priced at $19.99 and for age newborn+, in specialty stores now.

Just Roll with It: Tips & Tricks to Getting Kids Riding

Every year we all do it. We make outrageous resolutions that we will never be able to fulfill for the next twelve months (Soul Cycle twice a week? Feed our kids 100-percent non-GMO, locally raised organic produce? Make weekends screen-free and have the kids put away all their clothes Marie Kondo st‌yle? Sound familiar?). Well this year, I’m kicking those resolutions in the butt and making some that I know I’ll be able to fully accomplish. And this time next year, I’ll be raising my glass and toasting to my success. Want to join me? Here are my top ten resolutions for the real moms in all of us.

1. I plan to misplace my house keys at least once a week.

2. Same goes for my phone.

3. I will eat healthy all day. And even though I promised myself, “Just one glass of wine,” after dinner, I will not feel bad when I find the empty bottle the next morning along with an alarming amount of Hershey Kiss wrappers beside it on the counter.

4. I will white-knuckle the steering wheel in frustration when my kid tells me they forgot their lunch at home…just when we reach the outside of school.

5. I resolve to sniff the milk before serving it to my kids and I promise not to try and pass off the questionably expired stuff.

6. I promise to not make promises about leaving in five minutes. In fact, I promise to never make promises about time ever again.

7. I’m going to stop suggesting mind-numbing, boring games to do with my kids that make me feel better about pulling them off the iPad.

8. Rather than look up their numbers every single time, I plan to put our favorite local pizza and Chinese delivery restaurants on my favorites list in my phone for easy access.

9.  I resolve to buy myself Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthday, Labor Day (why isn’t this one bigger for Moms?), and Christmas presents and address the gifts to “The Mom Who Works Hard and Deserves a Little Something” so that everyone in my family sees that someone appreciates all that I do.

10. And lastly, but surely, 100-percent accomplishable—I plan to run at least ten minutes late to everything and blame it on the kid who can’t talk yet.

For a stroller that’s compact and durable, but without sacrificing style points turn to the Bugaboo Bee 5. It’s a no-brainer for on-the-go city families. It’s super easy for parents to use and ultra comfortable for baby to cruise around in. Here’s what we like about it:

Nimble for caregiver
The Bugaboo Bee 5 has an incredibly lightweight yet comprehensive design. This stroller is meant for daily use as its advanced four-wheel suspension can take on any cracked sidewalks, bumpy streets, or park terrain. That means whether you’re one-handed steering through tight spaces like train cars and coffee shops or squeezing onto an escalator, the Bugaboo Bee 5 does it with ease.

And the compact chassis makes it extremely easy to fold and store just about anywhere. Everything can be done with a single hand, which kind of defines city living: swiping a metropass, hailing a taxi, or pushing a swing while sipping your morning latte. You always need one hand free.

Comfortable for baby
Bugaboo is practically synonymous with luxury when it comes to baby gear. It’s like flying first class for your little one because it’s just that comfy. The seat has extra padding and three different recline positions to switch up depending on what your child needs at that moment: an eye out to the world or a stroller nap. The seat is also fully reversible, so your baby can face you or face out to take in the sights and scenes.

Navigating stairs, subways, and sidewalks is never a problem, whether you’re exploring your neighborhood or traveling far from home. When baby is a newborn, use the baby bassinet and glide on over to storytime at the local library. When she grows with enough neck control to sit upright, use the child seat to chauffeur your tot to and from preschool or daycare. Don’t forget to stash everything you need in the spacious underseat basket with its own built-in pocket.

High on city style
No matter your personal style, Bugaboo has you covered. The Bee 5 is fully customizable from canopy cover to seat fabric choice. Choose from a modern black or sleek aluminum chassis. Then pair it with the blue mélange, grey mélange, black or steel blue fabric for a look that’s impeccably clean and chic. The Bee 5 has the bassinet option (for an extra cost), which we love since you can start using the Bee 5 the minute you get home from the hospital.

Prefer to use an infant car seat? Simply purchase adapters and pair them with any compatible car seat or place your tot in the provided seat with sun canopy. It’s bound to become a quintessential part of any city kid’s street style.

I love to vacation and I love to get away, but if anyone tells you that flying across the country (and I mean from the very west coast to the very east coast) toddler in tow, in the hot tropical heat, trying to dodge thunderstorms, and constantly reapplying sunscreen is relaxing, I’d say BS! For those who have done it, I don’t have to tell you. You know all too well that vacations or getaways take on a whole new meaning when you do it with kids. It’s a lot of work, but is it well worth it? Yes. Yes! YES! I’d do it all over again!

We spent a week in Orlando, Florida at the happiest place on earth! I’m not sure if that accolade is strictly reserved for Disneyland in Anaheim, California, but it is DisneyWORLD, so let’s call it the happiest place on earth! This trip was full of firsts for us. First time flying with a “lap infant,” as airlines call under-2-year olds. First time in Florida and at Disneyworld for Tyler and me. Our first weeklong family vacation and many many more firsts.

I won’t bore you with the logistics of travelling with a toddler. If you do want to commiserate or trade tips and tricks, drop me a comment. I’m all for it! But I do want to relive the moments and memories that are forever in my heart and in the 2000 photos I snapped on my iPhone!

Aside from us telling Tyler who certain Disney characters are and what our vacation was about, he had no familiarity or association with the characters and rides. For that reason, I was hoping he wouldn’t freak out at giant costumed characters, which he didn’t! If you asked me to narrow it down to three things, I could tell you that the three highlights for him were character dining, riding the monorail, and driving at the Tomorrowland Speedway.

Character dining. We dined with Chef Mickey. We united with our Ohana and brunched with Lilo and Stitch. We had lunch with Pooh and Friends in the 100 Acre Woods. We recharged in Africa with Mickey and Friends after embarking on the Kilimanjaro Safari. And when our last day rolled around, we said our farewells to Disneyworld at brunch with our friends from Fantasyland. You could just see the excitement and adoration in Tyler’s eyes as he was greeted by Mickey Mouse. He was his sweetest most cuddly self when Stitch and Pooh came to visit. He gave out high fives and kisses and the occasional boop on the nose. You can just see the excitement on his face! It made me remember the wonderment and I could just see and feel it through his eyes the way I once did as a kid. That was pretty special and and something I hope to experience again soon.

The monorail. Such a simple, and very convenient mode of transport, but it never ceased to amaze and excite Tyler. Sometimes he’d ride the monorail on the bench with us. Sometimes in his stroller. Other times, he’d stand up and hold on to the pole. But no matter what, he’d joyfully point out in his sweet little voice to all the other riders (multiple times on each trip too) that we were riding the monorail. “Monrrraaail!” He’s still talking about it and just yesterday called a passing lightrail “monrail!”

“Drive! Drive!” *Steering hand motions* This kid loves cars, trains, trucks, and things that go. Things with wheels, horns, engines, or motors that go fast and can make you dizzy are his cup of tea. It was no wonder he loved the Mad Tea Party. But the Tomorrowland Speedway had to be his favorite ride. Our first time on the ride, Kevin and I let Tyler take the wheel and it was the jerkiest car ride of our lives! We screamed and laughed so hard as we repeatedly hit the rails. The other drivers were sure to keep their distance. We had to pry his hands off the steering wheel at the end of the ride. The ride operator shook his head and said we’re going to have a tough time with this one once he’s a teenager. Ugh, I don’t even want to think that far ahead. And hopefully this is not a foreshadowing of when he learns how to drive. Kev took Tyler on the ride a couple more times too. I had to stay in the grandstand because I was getting sick. A jerky car ride and the smell of fuel do not mix well with a bad cold. When we got back to our hotel room, Kevin showed me how he was thrown from side to side and how he was yelling each time they hit the rails. It was much to Tyler’s delight as he giggled watching and hearing his daddy recount their latest race for mommy. Just making the same jerky motions and talking about how Tyler is a crazy driver instantly triggers steering motions, car sounds, and loud giggles. Music to my ears!

For me, the highlight of the trip was experiencing the magic and awe through Tyler’s eyes. People tell me that there’s nothing like reliving your childhood through your child’s eyes and they’re right. Spending an afternoon at the park, meeting the characters, going on a new ride. These things just take you back and give you all the feels. You forget about all that’s wrong in the world and remember all that’s right–the sweet innocence, imagination, exploration, and magic of being a kid. In those moments, you’re a kid again and the everyday stressors and the responsibilities of adulthood go away for a little while. It’s fun, refreshing, and so heart-warming and something I wish I could just bottle up and take a whiff or a swig of anytime I’m in need  of a little pick-me-up.

Is it really any surprise that I’m going through these post-vacation withdrawals that have me wondering why we ever came home in the first place? Take me back to Neverland! But all post-vacay sadness aside, it really was the trip of a lifetime and the magic and memories will never fade.

Making the transition from milk to solids is eventful and, at times, nostalgic. The little baby that you’ve been steering into a brand new world suddenly becomes a little human with likes, dislikes, and strong opinions. You miss the newborn baby smell because along the way it’s been swapped for…other smells, more “this is a little kid in the making” smells.

When you start feeding your little one new foods, the smells are definitely one of the bigger changes to adapt to, but so is the increased challenge to you being the one leading. Now, they lead. They sometimes scream. They don’t want, until all they do, is want. This is true whether you’re feeding them avocado for the first time or our Broccoli Ever After. We know it’s hard and we know that repetition is key, but here’s a list of things you may not have thought to expect when you were expecting.

1. They may not like it right away. We talk about this reality often on Fresh Bellies. I mean, how amazing would it be if your little one just took to golden beets instantly? Amiright. Most of the time though, that’s not the case. Experts recommend trying new foods at least an average of 10 times before deciding whether your little one actually likes it and it’s because your little one may not even know if they like it before the 11th try. This is an entirely new world to them and skepticism seems to be knee jerk no matter how old they may be.

2. Veggies come with an extra side of gas. Okay, we just have to say it—babies fart. When you give little one’s veggies? It results in healthy bowel movement and they may fart more. In most cases the baby farts aren’t a serious medical matter, they just take a bit of adjusting to because, well, your babies used to not be little humans with the smelliest of farts. In the long run, it’s an okay tradeoff because a baby that eats all the beets and green veggies is one with a healthy gut and has bigger chances of becoming an adventurous eater as an adult.

3. Their breath smells like…lunch. Add this to the list of things that are somewhat small, but still highly unexpected when you start feeding your kiddo more diverse foods. Your baby is going to have a strong breath after some meals. What an unexpected thing to make you feel like your little one is all grown up! And yet, after a serving of anything with garlic or onions, for example, there is no question that your little one’s breath will be reminding you of what they had for lunch.

4. Make it half and half (or a little less if it’s been a long day). It’s all about portions and all about presenting a new food without masking, but without spooking your kiddo either. Experts recommend pairing a food your little one already trusts with the new one you’re trying to introduce them to. It’ll help them feel like they’re not in completely foreign territory and therefore trust the new food a bit more.

5. It’s not you, it’s them! Parents, you’re awesome! Keep reminding yourself that your kids are a work in progress and learning to eat healthy takes time. Give your little one the space to surprise you. Venture to feed them all types of foods, even ones that aren’t your favorite. You might have hard feelings towards beets, but your little one may be obsessed.
