If it’s a rainy Mother’s Day, not to worry: The outdoor seating here is protected and curbside seating will be available that day, too. Tribeca: Bubby’s

Bubby's

You can’t go wrong at a Bubby’s brunch any day of the week let alone on Mother’s Day. On Sunday May 9th, every mom will be served a complimentary mimosa, which P.S. pairs perfectly with Bubby's delicious sourdough pancakes (made from a century-old sourdough recipe) or one of its new springtime menu items, such as slice of delectable strawberry rhubarb pie. The outdoor setup at this 30-year-old fave is delightful, too, as its covered and heated—an appealing feature if the temperature dips on mom’s big day.

At this Italian trattoria, the second location of a restaurant that’s been serving downtown diners for years, the pasta dishes are a definite draw. One is even served in a giant cheese wheel and we know moms will love brunching on the traditional Roman menu items offered here. Book a table in the sidewalk seating area for maximum people watching and, whatever you do, save room for one of their epic desserts.

On Mother’s Day, brunch will be served 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and, best of all, the restaurant’s outdoor space is expanded on the weekends thanks to Open Streets so there’s plenty of open air tables with umbrellas and space for strollers.

That’s not all, there’s outdoor seating right in front of this authentic Neapolitan pizzeria, which opened in 2009, and all the Kesté pizza favorites (including fried!) are on the menu as well as gluten-free items and a special dessert: tiramisu with peaches. 7 Local Restaurants Offering Takeout & Delivery Right Now

Buy Local: Curbside Pick-Up & Delivery from These PDX Spots

If you have little ones with a gluten intolerance or are going gluten-free for your own health, it can be daunting to take the first steps towards removing wheat, rye, and barley from your diet. Luckily, there are lots of resources to help and plenty of recipe ideas to make it easy on the family. We collected some of our favorites, see them all below.

photo: Veggies Don’t Bite

Breakfast

1. Overnight Oatmeal: Oats don’t contain gluten but are often grown close to the grasses that do and are sometimes processed on the same machines. Look for gluten-free oats to be absolutely sure. Set the little ones up for the day with these overnight oats from Sophia DeSantis of Veggies Don’t Bite. Berries and almond milk give this recipe an extra sweetness.

2. Pumpkin Honey Bread: Removing wheat flour can be a challenge if you enjoy baked bread and pastries. Store-bought gluten-free flour mix isn’t hard to find and includes alternative flours made from rice or seeds. If you’re making your own flour, a good mix is 1 1/4 cups coconut flour, 1/2 cup tapioca flour, 1/2 cup millet flour or brown rice flour and 1/4 cup gluten-free oat flour. Pumpkin bread is a hit any time of the year, and this recipe from our archives packs a punch of omega-3 fatty acids thanks to the addition of flax seeds.

3. French Toast: Gluten-free pasta and bread are easy to pick up at the store, which means with a stocked pantry, the family menu can still include breakfast favorites like french toast. These are super easy to throw together if you’ve got gluten-free bread to hand.

photo: Cookie & Kate

4. Buckwheat Waffles: In spite of its name, buckwheat isn’t related to wheat so it’s naturally gluten-free. This simple, 100% buckwheat flour recipe from Cookie & Kate yields light and crisp waffles that are still fluffy on the inside.

photo: The View From Great Island

5. Blender Muffins: The batter for these muffins from The View From Great Island is based on oats, nuts, and water. Whizz up the ingredients, and fill muffin cups right from the blender for a gluten-free breakfast that takes less than half an hour to bake.

6. Pear and Banana Baked Pancakes: Try a twist on your usual pancakes with almond flour (It’s gluten-free!). These pancakes are oven-baked, which means no hovering over a hot stove. Kiddos will love topping them with powdered sugar and fresh fruit.

photo: Debbie Adler, Sweet Debbie’s Organic Cupcakes

Snacks

7. Sweet Cranberry Bars: These sweet bars are the perfect midday snack, especially since they’re filled with good-for-you ingredients like oats and coconut oil.

8. Sunflower Granola Bites: Instead of reaching for a granola bar at snack time, make a batch of these granola bites on Sunday afternoon. The sunflower butter and cocoa nibs make them an instant kid fave.

9. Oven Roasted BBQ Chickpeas: Little foodies will love getting in on the action when you’re tossing chickpeas in an insanely delicious spice mixture. Like kale chips, this recipe is vegan, nut-free and gluten-free.

10. Apple Pie Fruit Leathers: Homemade fruit leather may sound a little ambitious, but it’s actually super simple, not to mention way cheaper than buying it from the grocery store. You can also dry sliced apples the same way.

photo: Eat Within Your Means

Dinner

11. Spaghetti Squash Burrito Bowl: Wheat-based pasta is off the table when you’re going gluten-free, but when one door closes, another opens. Say hello to this spaghetti squash recipe from Eat Within Your Means for a new kind of noodle. Cut the squash across the width rather than the length for the best spaghetti yield, and bake them to your liking before fluffing and adding sauce.

12. Mac and Cheese: This family favorite gets a makeover thanks to Veggies Don’t Bite, one of our go-to resources for gluten-free and vegan eats. This sharp white mac ‘n’ cheese bake is as creamy and delicious as its dairy counterpart.

13. Penne Pasta: Once you’ve found your favorite gluten-free pasta it’s business as usual, and you can cook up recipes like this tomato, feta, and basil pasta dish from our archives.

photo: Erin Clarke of Well Plated

14. Zoodles with Shrimp: Put a spiralizer on your shopping list because not only are zoodles (aka zucchini noodles) a healthy, low-calorie, and low-carb option to replace pasta, their mild flavor can easily adapt to a wide range of flavors. Heap them with lemon and garlic for this light shrimp scampi recipe via Erin Clarke at Well Plated.

15. Asian Lettuce Wraps: It can be a surprise to find out that gluten can also be lurking in salad dressings, soy sauce, french fries, and cereal, so it’s important to look at the ingredients when shopping for these items. Consider using lettuce wraps where you might have used a burger bun. These wraps from Our Family Eats are big on flavor, just make sure the soy sauce in your pantry is gluten-free.

16. Homemade Chicken Fingers: Kamut, farro, spelt, triticale, bulgur, durum, and semolina will be off-limits if the family is going gluten-free. These crispy chicken fingers put a healthy twist on the well-loved classic with the addition of sunflower seeds, flax seed, and sesame seeds to add some crunch.

photo: Cookie & Kate

17. Almond Meal Quiche. The almond meal base of this quiche makes it a delicious gluten-free alternative to a regular crust and adds an unexpected sweetness. If you think the kids will turn their noses up at arugula and mushrooms, use the crust recipe as your starting point and add a simplified cheese and ham filling.

18. Quick Chicken Stew: If you generally use wheat flour to thicken sauces, it’s easy to switch to rice flour or cornstarch to do the job. That’s what Amy Fothergill, of The Family Chef, uses in this recipe from our archives. She puts some leftover chicken to work for a simple and comforting family meal.

19. Sweet and Sour Chicken: Cornstarch is the thickening agent in this crock pot recipe from our archives. Pop the ingredients together in the morning, and by the evening the whole house will smell heavenly.

20. Mini Meatloaf Muffins: Everything is better when it’s bite-sized, and meatloaf is no exception. This recipe doesn’t use flour but you’ll have to have some gluten-free bread on hand to make breadcrumbs. It’s easy to sneak a few veggies into the mix, too!

21. Black Bean Burgers: Keep the veggie lovers in your family happy with these flavorful black bean burgers. Use gluten-free bread to bind and lettuce as an alternative to brioche or burger buns.

22. Mexican Pork Carnitas: Switch out wheat tortillas for corn, and you can still put together these tacos that are so tasty, no-one will notice the difference. This recipe takes a bit more time, but the leftovers will make it worth spending your Sunday afternoon cooking.

photo: Real Mom Nutrition

Dessert

23. Blueberry Oatmeal Cups: There’s no wheat flour needed in these blueberry oatmeal cups from Real Mom Nutrition, making them a wonderful baking option for gluten-free families. The recipe uses frozen blueberries, so they are an easy option any time of the year.

24. Chocolate Dough Balls: Oats and tapioca make up the flour in this recipe for chocolate dough balls. Dreamed up by Sophia of Veggies Don’t Bite, they are a mix between cookie dough and baked cookies. Plant-based, gluten-free, vegan and absolutely delicious, they’ll soon become a family favorite.

photo: The View from Great Island

25. Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble: This fruit crisp from The View from Great Island is topped with oats and hazelnuts for a gluten-free dessert the kids will love. Just add ice cream!

26. Lemon Almond Cookies: Keep it simple with easy lemon almond cookies that pair perfectly with a cup of hot cocoa.

27. Secret Ingredient Brownies: The secret behind these brownies is black beans, believe it or not—they give the brownies their fudgy taste without adding extra calories.

28. Chocolate-Dipped Peanut Butter Cookies: In case the to-die-for combination of peanut butter and chocolate isn’t enough to convince you to whip this one up, it’s ridiculously simple to boot—there are only five ingredients!

29. Vegan Chocolate Pie: This indulgent no-bake dessert from A Taste of Madness has a magic ingredient— avocado! It’s rich and fudgy, and a sure fire winner for the whole family. Just make sure you have a gluten-free pie crust in the pantry, or make your own with this recipe at Cookie and Kate.

Breakfast: Red and Blue Velvet Pancakes, Larchmont Bungalow
Sure you could have eggs and toast, but that wouldn’t be as festive as kicking off the day with the red and blue velvet pancakes from Larchmont Bungalow. Topped with cream cheese spread, these super moist pancakes are make from an in-house secret recipe. It’s all topped with fresh whipped cream, candied walnuts and maple syrup. The plate is big enough to share (with the whole family!) and it tastes just as good with a cup of iced cold milk as it does with a mug of hot coffee. It also comes in half orders, which is just enough for everyone to get a bite or two. Order a side of fruit (blueberries, strawberries and bananas, to keep the theme going) to even the meal out and make you feel a little bit better about the impending sugar rush.

Good to know: Breakfast is served all day here, so come in as early or as late as you like.

Snack: Red, White and Blue Juices, Totes Juices
Jump on the juice bandwagon, and try one of three red, white, or blue juice offerings at Totes Juice in Sherman Oaks. It’s one of the healthiest trends around and after one taste, you’ll know why it’s so addicting. The kids get a healthy heaping helping of fruits and veggies, and you get a snack that is portable and satisfying. Bring a few to these to keep everyone hydrated and healthy as you head out to a parade or fireworks show.  As for the red white and blue challenge, here are the drinks to down:

Yolo (Red): This sweet and tangy blend of organic beet, carrot, apple, wheatgrass and parsley has a brilliant red hue. Although this might be best for adventurous palates, some kids just love the fact that it turns their tongues (and later, poop!) red.

Almond Mylkey Way (White): Drinking this one down is easy. It’s packed with organic almonds, dates, carob, cinnamon, and a pinch of sea salt. Some kid taste testers say it tastes just like a milk shake. We love that it packs a protein punch. When you pick up one for the kids, get another to go; it makes for a mean latte.

Seasonal Summer Special, Blew Me Away (Blue): Get this organic blueberry, pineapple, orange and cucumber blend while it lasts. It takes like summer in a bottle.

Good to know: Head in during happy hour between 4-5 p.m. weekdays for $1 off any 16 oz juice.

Lunch: Namesake Meals from Pie and Burger
Just like Washington, we cannot tell a lie. You can’t get more American than a hamburger. And if you want a good ‘ole fashioned burger lunch, complete with toasted bun and all (or none) of the fixings, this is the place. With a medium rare burger and tomatoes or ketchup on a white bun, you’re 2/3 of the way there, but really we just get the burger as a base for dessert.  Pie!  Whether you get red (strawberry, rhubarb or cherry) or blue (blueberry), you can order each with a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream. Teach your kid what à la mode means and they’ll never have a naked piece of pie again.

Celebrate our nearest neighbors on Independence Day by ordering some of the tastiest and kid-friendliest Mexican food in LA at one of the oldest eateries around. El Cholo serves up superb margaritas and endless bowls of chips and (red) salsa that starts everyone in the family off happily. So what about those patriotic colors? Try the blue corn enchiladas with red sauce and jack cheese or the kids’ meals that come with a red, white and blue bomb pop for dessert. And as you sip your strawberry margarita (red, in keeping with the theme) kids can have any of the daiquiris virgin style or try an ice cold Shirley Temple, with extra cherries upon request.

ICDC just opened in late April on Beverly Blvd, and as the name implies, they’ve got 3 of the 4 food groups covered (ice cream, donuts and coffee—the 4th food group being sushi, and that just doesn’t fit with the others).  Run, don’t walk to this new location and praise the day that someone had the brilliant idea to put the faves your whole family craves under one roof.

Scoop-Tastic
Everything served here is fresh and as good for you as ice cream and donuts are going to be. Nothing artificial, no chemicals, everything is made in house, from the ice cream (which they pasteurize themselves) to the donuts (which are made right behind the counter). Mariah Swan, the pastry chef at BLD (the restaurant next door) is the brains and imagination behind the donut and ice cream flavors. She makes sure to use fresh farmer’s market ingredients, and she changes the ingredients accordingly (using what’s locally in season). You won’t find any bizarre savory flavors here (a fact which makes your kids cheer) or savory treats. It’s all dessert, all the time.  Again, do they know your kids, or what?

While you’re drooling over the coffee menu, your kids can taste as many ice cream flavors as they like, all on adorable miniature metal spoons (fun and environmentally friendly). There are many options mini taste testers will love, from dulce de leche to malted milk chocolate and classic vanilla bean. For those who need non-dairy, there’s Strawberry Rhubarb Sorbet (made with the locally lionized Harry’s Berries) or an extremely scrumptious (and kid-approved) TCHO chocolate sorbet that’s so decadent, you’ll never miss the milk.

The scoops are generous, so kids may have trouble getting through one on their own (you’ll be delighted to help out), and the made-from-scratch crunch of those cones is undeniably delicious. You can order half scoops too, so you can have two flavors without having to find room for two regular-sized portions. Perfect for kids who want a little vanilla to balance out the chocolate.

Caffeine Please
Too bleary-eyed from parental lack of sleep to decide on an ice cream flavor? Not to worry. Perk up those peepers with a cup of joe; the smooth, rich, totally-solves-all-problems kind of coffee is served here. They use Vittoria, which is an Australian brand with a 3rd generation Italian lineage. You’ll be in sipping heaven. Plus, you can froth your java with a variety of milks, from the traditional cow kind to the vegan-friendly almond or soy versions.

Designer Donuts
Want something to dunk in that coffee? You’re spoiled with choices of high-caliber donuts whose quality matches that of the coffee you’re quaffing. With flavors like Curried Sugar, Mayan Chocolate, and Grapefruit Campari, the gourmet aspect mitigates the guilt no matter what you choose. Kids will love the Peanut Butter and Banana filled donuts, as well as the Butterscotch filled or the Rocky Road (which boasts home-made marshmallows on top…yum!).

photo credit: Michael U. via yelp

Watching your wheat? Try the gluten free Buttermilk Brown Butter or Salt & Pepper Caramel and you’ll feel totally satisfied (no dietary restricted disappointments here). If you’re in the mood for something smaller, grab a bag of mini donut holes for $3. Little ones will love popping these churro-inspired yummies into their mouths, and you will love that they’re tasty enough to deliver flavor, but small enough to count as “just a bite.” Donuts are made every few hours, but if your littles are hankering to watch a batch be made before their eyes, you can ask for your flavor to be made-to-order, right then and there. It doesn’t get fresher (or more fun) than that.

All in One
Can’t decide between ice cream, coffee or donuts? This is where the beauty of the name comes into play.  You can get them all, and all at once.  Order the signature ICDC, a salted caramel doughnut topped with vanilla ice cream and poured over with a shot of espresso. It’s definitely the Pick Me Ups of pick-me-ups.

ICDC may be small batch and artisanal, but they’re definitely kid-friendly, too, and they strive to keep a child-like sensibility in all that they do. The décor reflects that, with warm pinks, yellow and blues, and fun hats for the employees (ice cream or donut embellished).

There is no parking lot, but street parking off Beverly is easy to find during the day, or you can nab a meter out in front. (Street parking in the evening here is a whole different matter, so it’s lucky that you’ve got kids and are coming early…) If all else fails, park in the lot at nearby Pan Pacific Park, then head back to the park for playtime after you get your caffeine and sugar fix.  There is no specific seating for ICDC, but you’re welcome to use the chairs at next-store BLD, if available.

Like the perfect puff of a good “glazed raised,” doughnut shops are on the rise. And in case you need an excuse, June 6th is National Doughnut Day. In celebration, we rounded up a half-dozen doughnut shops in the big A where you can grab a box for your brood.

Sublime Doughnuts A winner of all kinds of accolades, this shop touted as one of the best doughnuts spots in America looks like any old strip-mall shop from the outside. Step inside to see what all the fuss is about. Flavors range from the simple (glazed croissants) to the sublime (maple bacon cheddar doughnuts).
