Giving birth is a workout in itself—it’s one of the most intense physical challenges a person will ever experience, which deserves more than a little rest and relaxation. But when you feel ready to get back into your fitness routine (and you get the green light from your doctor), you can jump in with these 10 free online workouts to help your post-baby body feel good. There’s something here for everybody, and every body, from gentle beginner workouts to challenging calorie burns!
What it is: No equipment needed for this 20-minute workout in which you use your body weight to your advantage. Larie leads you through various sets of lunges and pulses that keep your core firm and will make you feel the burn.
Why you’ll love it: This is a great option for that very first post-birth foray into exercise because it’s quick and you can modify every move by going deeper or staying higher. Squeeze this into your day during naptime, even micro-naps! And Larie is chatty, which keeps you focused yet also somehow distracted from all that thigh-shaking.
What it is: Full of movements that focus on the midsection, this short video shows postnatal mamas how to start getting their abs back in shape by targeting the deep abdominal muscles. These aren’t your traditional ab exercises, but instead a slow reintroduction to the core muscle connections.
Why you’ll love it: The exercises are broken up by lots of restorative stretching, and if you feel like you want to challenge yourself more, do the video again.
What it is: A chance to spend 20 minutes with your baby with plenty of stretching and yoga poses for you. You may not break a sweat, but you’ll be engaging all sorts of muscles and connecting with your little one face-to-face. Great for babies who aren’t yet mobile.
Why you’ll love it: You get the effect of being in a mommy & me yoga class without having to deal with leaving the house.
What it is: If you didn’t exercise during pregnancy and are just getting back into the swing of things after baby, you may have to work up to this 30-minute yoga instruction. It’s a basic flow routine with balance and core work.
Why you’ll love it: The voiceover instruction is calming, as is the music. And Sara Beth encourages pushing yourself through individual challenges.
What it is: A 15-minute baby-wearing workout full of smooth, controlled movements. You’ll do plenty of squats, lunges, and low-impact exercises that are safe to perform with a baby strapped to your chest.
Why you’ll love it: The movement will probably put your baby right to sleep!
What it is: Easy, breezy exercises to shape and tone on a daily basis. You’ll spend 17 minutes doing 14 different exercises and stretches, 12 reps each, mostly lying down.
Why you’ll love it: It’s a great way to decompress and relax before sleep, especially if you’re not sleeping through the night yet.

Staying healthy while pregnant is one of the best things you can do for your baby and yourself. After confirming what’s OK with your doctor, check out our top prenatal workouts in NYC, including prenatal yoga, prenatal pilates, cycling in and out of the pool and barre work. Added plus? You can do all of these classes post-baby as well to keep your workout streak going strong. For more fitness spots, head on over to our roundup of New York City gyms with childcare, take a look at our favorite kid-friendly hikes in and near NYC, and our top NYC stroller hikes if you already have a kid in tow. And, although the past few years of the pandemic have been hard on exercise studios, a positive change has been the uptick in fitness providers now offering all kinds of virtual options, including on-demand classes and live online sessions. Whatever your prenatal fitness need is, an NYC studio will meet it!
Indoor cycling studio BYKlyn uses Silent Disco/Sound Off headphones for a fun, club-like atmosphere, and top instructors from studios throughout NYC each bring their own style and music to classes. All classes are Real Ride, with hills, speed work and intervals—just like a real bike ride. Pregnant riders are welcome, and can adjust the intensity of a ride as needed. Choose from 30 classes throughout the week.
Moms love: The inclusive and fun atmosphere. All levels and body types are welcome—you don't need to be a perfect pro to ride here.
Ballet Beautiful is a great workout to take advantage of stretches and targeted exercises inspired by classical ballet training. (Fans include Maggie Gyllenhaal and Tracee Ellis Ross.) Classes offered combine barre, mat, and light cardio, and are designed to help sculpt and tone your body. Ballet Beautiful's Soho studio is currently closed due to the pandemic, but there are lots of ways to access classes online: via purchasing individual workouts to stream, joining as a member for access to all trainings, or by booking a private individual or group class. Don't worry, no matter how you take a class, no tutu or previous dance training required!
Moms love: The targeted prenatal and postnatal workouts specifically designed for women preparing for and recovering from childbirth.
Created by a former marketing executive and mom-to-be when she found prenatal exercise options contradictory and lacking, Pronatal Fitness trains expecting moms for pregnancy, birth and motherhood like athletes prepping for a major sporting event. The online workouts are specifically designed to prep moms for the physical, and physiological, demands of all three wonderful, but challenging times. Pronatal Fitness also offers post-natal workouts (with or without baby) to help you get back into the swing of things. For those struggling with diastasis recti (or ab separation), new moms can have a consultation and receive an individualized program.

After baby arrives, post-natal classes address concerns and body changes, and new moms can bring babies along.

Want to preserve those long, lean gorgeous muscles throughout your pregnancy (or at least try to find them again)? Barre classes are some of the best workout classes for pregnant women due to the controlled movements and seamless modifications. PureBarre and Physique57 are two of the most popular barre workout studios, and both offer classes that combine light cardio, strength training and stretching to work your arms, thighs, seat and abs of during and after pregnancy.
Moms Love: These two studios offer barre classes that make us feel like we’re never taking the exact same class twice given their variety of instructors and class types. The moves allow for small bursts that fatigue muscles to exhaustion for ultimate toning. At Pure Barre, new moms can workout and bond with their newborn at the “Babies on Board” class, a fun, postnatal-friendly workout.
Compare notes with other expecting moms in the moderately- paced, 90-minute prenatal yoga class at Yoga Vida. Each class begins and ends with a restorative pose to connect with baby, relax the body, and de-stress the mind. But we promise it’s no nap fest! Basic yoga asana allows you to strengthen the body and increase stamina required for labor (kegels anyone?). After baby, check out their postnatal classes; babies 18 months and up are invited to join you for a 90-minute class designed to heal and rejuvenate the body following childbirth.
Moms Love: Pigeon pose: it opens the hips (making more room for baby) and stretches the back, butt and thigh muscles in all the right spots.
Lengthen muscles, loosen joints, and relieve muscle tension with Village Gyrotonic prenatal class. The studio is currently open for one-on-one sessions, and you can join live classes online. Gyrotonic improves overall flexibility by strengthening and stretching major muscle groups and joints while enhancing your range of motion, balance and coordination. Based on principles from yoga, tai chi, gymnastics, and dance, the exercises are performed on equipment designed to give the human body complete freedom of movement.
Moms love: Gyrotonic exercises help to create a strong, flexible, pelvic floor while strengthening and toning abdominal muscles, buttocks, hips and thighs.
Good news SoulCycle addicts: just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you need to stop tapping it back like a rock star. Assuming cycling has been a part of your life pre-pregnancy and you and your doctor agree it's okay, SoulCycle encourages riders to continue riding through pregnancy with personal adjustments taken when needed. While there are no set “prenatal” classes, regular Soul classes shouldn’t be an issue with your bump.
Moms love: It's a 45-minute dance party on a bike. What's not to love?

If you’re already active in both barre and yoga classes, you are encouraged to take classes right up to the day you give birth if you like. Exhale's barre and yoga classes vary by intensity, and their dedication to guests’ health requires expecting moms to provide a note from their OBGYN before taking classes. While classes aren’t called out as prenatal, teachers are prepared to offer proper modifications throughout class to ensure a moms-to-be a great workout. Added plus? Exhale offers prenatal facials and massages (after the second trimester) to help guests relax and relieve stress.

Brush Park Gymnasium
When owner Adrienne Farrel had her first baby in 2013, she felt there was a lack of workout facilities that effectively catered to families wanting to maintain a regular fitness routine. Having a Master's in Exercise Physiology in her pocket and a new goal to provide options for Chicago families, she created a space where every family member can have access to high-quality health and wellness. And, she did it beautifully. The stunning facility has all the equipment needed for an effective adult workout, a kid's playspace with a climbing wall, hanging pod chairs, and a magnetic wall and outdoor space for parents to sit, chat and enjoy coffee while the kids play.
The obstacles at Windy City Ninjas challenge wanna-be American Ninja Warriors looking to tap their fierce inner Ninja. They have a mission of helping kids set goals and overcome, persevere and achieve what they never thought possible. They have structured, progressive 45-minute classes where kids can build on their development each week or kids can sign-up for a 90-minute open play session. Windy City Ninjas also hosts day-off and summer camps, as well as birthday parties.

After training with an instructor, your little birds will enter a vertical wind tunnel and experience the freedom of flight. This might not seem like exercise, but kids need to engage their core, glute and spinal muscles to make it all happen. There's also a decent amount of mind-body coordination that comes into play.

The Lure: Get transported to the tropics, thanks to brightly painted murals, tiki-style decor, gear hut and a snack shack. Individual changing rooms and a relaxing viewing area for parents redefine "family friendly."
The Plunge: No chattering teeth here: The pool is a comfy 90 degrees with an air temperature of 92 degrees. Lest you worry about that deep end, the water runs a friendly four feet deep with a two-foot ledge for beginners.
The Classes: Thirty-minute sessions are divided by age and ability for kids ages 4 months to 12 years, with a 4:1 student to teacher ratio. Want to enroll more than one child? Group sizes are small and lanes are divided to hold different classes, meaning your 10-month-old and 4-year-old could be scheduled at or around the same time.
The Parent Connection: Moms, dads and caregivers join children up to 35 months in the water, playing games and singing songs with lyrics like, “The babies in the pool go splash, splash, splash” (à la “Wheels on the Bus”). An instructor guides parents, demonstrating with a doll and offering hands-on feedback.
The Dunk: Teachers encourage activities like blowing bubbles. But it just might be the critter-shaped flotation devices and ride-on boats that help kids overcome their fear of water for good. When they’re ready to move on, rings on the bottom of the pool (and even crazy-colored toenails on instructors) encourage underwater dunks. Special ribbons reward hard work and are printed with accolades like “I’m so cool, I wear my goggles in the pool” and “I can kick really great with my legs straight.”
Please read their COVID-19 page for any updates on procedures or restrictions.
The Location: 13 Chicagoland locations. Find the one closest to you at goldfishswimschool.com.
The Lure: Interesting fact: Foss means "Fast Water" in Norwegian. Fun is fundamental here, and instructions given with a playful twist: for example, instead of telling kids to “do the backstroke”, they’re told to paint the ceiling different colors.
The Plunge: The pools are heated to a fine 91 degrees and have stairs, islands and benches, and only go as deep as four feet. The changing area boasts multiple family-friendly stalls.
The Classes: You pick a progression, like "Learn to Swim", "Swim Stronger", "Swim Faster", and based on age, you select class times. All classes are 30-45 minutes with discounts for siblings and a student-teacher ratio ranging from 3:1 to 5:1.
Parent Connection: Parents join in on the fun and instruction in the first three levels of Backfloat Baby, and optionally in the fourth. Check the calendar for Family Fun Swim, where the whole family gets to jump in. Non-Foss families are welcome; every Family Fun Swim has a mini 15-minute instruction time.
The Dunk: Foss tells you from the get-go that they don’t teach Red Cross classes. Instead, the emphasis is on teaching “bite-sized” skills for mastery, not just paddling along the pool. Even the humble flotation devices aren’t just for safety. They’re used to isolate and develop motor skills and develop specific muscles to conquer a swim skill. Hesitant beginners can observe at first.
While COVID-19 protocols are in place, there are some restrictions to the availability of lesson formats in different locations. Please check the website directly to see what is available until these temporary changes are lifted.
The Location: 6 Chicagoland locations in Lakeview, Oak Park, Highland Park, Libertyville, Niles and South Barrington. Visit them at fossswimschool.com.
Sharks Swim Club
Sharks Swim Club
The Lure: For kids ages 5 and up who have Olympic rings in their eyes, this place is where it’s at. The goal here is to finesse skills at all levels; beginners here, though, should already know how to finish at least one lap of freestyle. The “experts”? National competitors and Junior Olympians.
The Plunge: All classes are held at St. Patrick High School, so while it lacks the punchy decor of the other kid-centric schools, it’s the perfect training ground for serious swimmers.
The Classes: They're divided according to Future, Bronze, Silver, Gold and National. Beginners (Future) are for ages 5-8 and teaches the technique for competitive strokes, kicks and turns. Classes are an hour, and upper levels include “dryland conditioning,” i.e. aerobic exercises, strength training and resistance workouts.
Parent Connection: Since even the youngest here are independent swimmers, there’s no need to suit up. Parents are free to watch or drop off.
The Dunk: Every coach is equipped with an underwater iPad and camera to record each stroke and kick. The visual aid when training your child is a powerful tool. (Told you it’s serious here.)
The Location: 5900 W. Belmont Ave., 312- 800-3014. Visit them at sharksswimclub.com.
Chicago Blue Dolphins
The Lure: State-of-the-art pools and snazzy technology (under- and above-water mirrors and underwater videotaping) help master swimmers train. Kids receive the same royal treatment.
The Plunge Two endless pools are shallow and kept at 90 degrees so kids can relax and focus. Swimmers graduate to skills like diving and treading water at satellite locations with deep-end pools in Edgewater and Lakeview or at Ohio St. Beach.
The Classes: Baby and toddler classes are for six months to four years, preschool beginners are ages four and five, and everyone else from six and up are placed by skill level. Swimmers are encouraged to enroll twice, even up to four times a week for the first month, so they acclimate quickly. Kids with special needs and sensory processing or motor skill issues will love the Swim Whisperer program in private or semi-private lessons.
The Parent Connection: Moms and dads join babies and toddlers up to four years old. Instructors pass baby back and forth to parents to teach them how to roll their little minnow from side to back or cheek to ear.
The Dunk: If your landlubber isn’t keen on getting his feet wet, he can play at a separate station where water wheels, colanders and a spray will keep him busy. For those still in the pool, singing songs, splashing, blowing bubbles and playing with toys keep tears at bay.
Please read their updated COVID-10 procedures on their website prior to scheduling lessons.

That’s done through a team of full-time swim professionals who are passionate about their teaching because it’s their career. They customize lessons to ensure kids progress with each session, constantly building skills and confidence as they learn to swim and become safe in the water.
The Plunge: Pool water is always 91-degrees and a state-of-the-art UV filtration system ensures ultra-clean water. Anti-microbial, fall-proof carpets in the facility make transitions safe and kids find plenty of hand-held deck showers and private changing rooms. No waiting in lines with chattering teeth here!
The Classes: Full-time, highly trained swim professionals teach age and skill-appropriate offerings for kids ages 6 months-12-years. Pools designed with families in mind mean older and younger kids can swim at the same time. Classes run on a perpetual schedule so kids can enroll anytime, and they move up based on their progress.
The Parent Connection: Big Blue’s mobile app allows for easy scheduling or rescheduling of lessons. Canceling a lesson in advance earns parents a free make-up voucher. The app also allows parents to track their kid’s progress every time they swim to see new skills gained at each lesson.
The Dunk: The Big Blue team teaches kids they can do anything by unlocking their potential in the water. A unique curriculum focused on achieving distance-based milestones takes kids from safe to confident. Free trial lessons are offered.

British Swim School
The Lure: Kids learn to back-float first, because teachers profess that it’s the ideal survival skill, allowing the swimmer to reserve energy, breathe and cry out for help. Check out the video on their website of wee ones diving and rolling onto their backs as easily as baby belugas.
The Plunge: Classes meet in fitness centers and residential buildings downtown, including Fitness Formula Club in the Gold Coast and LA Fitness in the South Loop. There are several suburban locations, too. If locker rooms aren't available, the school brings changing tents.
The Classes: Babies and preschoolers are divided into two levels, while swimmers ages three or older start from beginners (minnows) and progress to swim-team hopefuls (sharks). The special abilities program is new but already a big hit, recommended by doctors for kids with muscular dystrophy and autism. Multiple classes are held at the same time to keep multi-kid mamas happy, and you have the option of adding on extra days a week.
The Parent Connection: Mommy/Daddy and Me classes are available for swimmers three years and younger. Play games like “Humpty Dumpty” and help them jump from the ledge into the water. An instructor uses a doll to model every move and facilitate proper form.
The Dunk: Slow and steady wins the race, as instructors use gradual techniques to quell fears. Those with extra butterflies in their tummies can take a break and get personal attention from a teacher, whether walking around the pool together or playing games.
Read about British Swim School's COVID-19-related procedures on their website.
The Location: Several Chicagoland locations. Find the nearest one to you at britishswimschool.com.
The Lure: The school's modern, upbeat vibe mirrors the lovable staff members. Families feel taken care of with everything from fun water toys to monthly newsletters with updates and parenting tips.
The Plunge: The heated four-foot-deep pool is surrounded by huge windows and a viewing room for parents.
The Classes: Babies four to 36 months old enroll in StarBaby and kids age 3-6 and 7-12 are grouped by ability. Unlike the other schools that allow registration at any time, this one runs in sessions, but you’ll be prorated if you join late.
The Parent Connection: Parents splash along in StarBaby's beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Then there's a transition level that phases parents out while instructors fully take the reins. Every few weeks, instructors set aside some Q&A time for parents.
The Dunk: Kids nervous about bobbing around can start by sitting with instructors near the pool, then dipping their feet in. Instructors also use a “shower bucket” (a bucket with holes on the bottom) and a song about getting wet to gently wet hands and shoulders. Graduates of each swim level earn a different colored wristband — a great visual reinforcement tool.
The Location: Locations in Arlington Heights & Mokena. Visit them at chicagoswimschool.com.
If you’ve got an Alexa (and kids) in your house, you’ve probably heard your fair share of “Baby Shark” and endless loops of Disney songs. But Amazon’s nifty wifi-enabled speaker can do a lot more than play music and make cat sounds. Whether you need help organizing your grocery list or counting down to your kid’s next birthday, read on to discover 24 things you probably never knew Alexa could do.
Chat with Chewbacca
Disney Parks
Oh happy day! Disney added two new options to its Disney-themed voice skills! Available exclusively on Amazon Kids+ on compatible Echo devices, kiddos can now ask Alexa to open Frozen Sing! and Star Wars: C-3PO Translates! The two new features join a slew of others that include Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel-themed skills.
Tired of battling technology during dinner time? Alexa will soon pause Wi-Fi access in your home, then unpause access with simple voice commands. Just say "Alexa, pause Wi-Fi on Joey's tablet."
Devices will use the assistant to manage WiFi access quickly for as little as one device or the whole family. In addition, users will be able to schedule specific Wi-Fi access times.
Get ready to hear some famous voice the next time you ask Alexa a question. Later this year, Amazon is rolling out a variety of celebs who will cater to your needs, like Samuel L. Jackson. Supposedly the voices will be generated from recordings with celebrities, but time will tell.
Use Alexa Communication For Kids
Amazon
Do your kids use your Amazon Echo device to talk to family and friends? Now parents can use the newest security setting to enable approved contacts with Alexa Communications for Kids for a safer experience. Whitelist specific people your littles can video and audio chat with, and set limits for your teens and tweens.
Now you can cook with your favorite celeb Foot Network chefs! On your Echo Show, ask Alexa to show cooking classed from the network's stars, save recipes and replay moments from cooking demonstrations. Order up!
Protect Your Home
Alexa Guard has even more skills than ever. When heading out, say "Alexa, I'm headed out" to arm the system. While you're away, your devices will stay alert and will detect smoke alarm sounds, carbon monoxide alarms, or glass breaking and send users Smart Alerts. Also coming soon, Guard can also send alerts to notify homeowners of sounds like coughing, footsteps, talking and even a door closing when no one should be home.
When you're carrying, say, two kids and a bag of groceries into a dark house, it's a whole lot easier to have someone else turn the lights on. With the new Amazon Smart Plug, anything plugged into the special plug can be controlled with your voice. All you need to do is say, "Alexa, turn on the lights," or, "Alexa, turn on the family room fan." You can also control your Smart Plug devices from the Alexa app—set your lights to go off and on at a specific time, for instance—which can be especially helpful if you're out of town and need to make it look like someone's still home.
Microwave buttons can be so tedious. Why not hand the job over to Alexa? Just pop your food or drinks into an AmazonBasics Microwave and say, for instance, "Alexa, cook one cup of coffee." Then, let your smart device figure out how long that needs to be. It's just one of a slew of Alexa-enabled appliances and gadgets now on the market. Because the future is now. And cooking with buttons is so 2017.
Do your kiddos know their verbs, nouns and adjectives? Let them practice their silly skills by creating a nonsensical story on Alexa. Just enable Mad Libs on Alexa then say, "Alexa, open Mad Libs." Your kids will be silly storytellers in no time.
Psst: If you've got the kids version of the Echo Dot, you can also access "Disney Plot Twist," Disney's version of Mad Libs, read by Disney characters themselves.
Filter Out Profanity
Amazon
When a three-year-old asks for a song, it's anyone's guess as to whether Alexa will get it right ... or very, very wrong. To nip any explicit lyrics or otherwise unsavory results from blasting through your speaker, be sure to enable Amazon Freetime on your Alexa device. Not only will Freetime help keep it clean, but it will also block your kids from accidentally (or intentionally!) ordering anything from Amazon. It will also give "safe" answers to some perennially curious questions.
To enable Freetime:
- Go to your Alexa app and hit "settings."
- Click on "Device settings" and choose the device you want to filter.
- Under "Freetime" setting, slide the tab to the right to enable.
Note: Some Alexa skills won't work while Freetime is enabled, so if you're having trouble accessing things, go to your Alexa app and disable Freetime until you're ready to hand the reins over to your kids.
Obviously, Alexa can't do the hiding, but this simple game will do the job if wee ones want to hide under the bed and see if it can "find them." Just say, "Alexa play Hide and Seek" and Alexa will ask three questions to see where you're hiding. Most of the time, it won't get it right—but your kids will love trying to see if it can!
If you're having trouble keeping track of all the stuff you need to do, just ask Alexa to "Create a new To-Do list" and start getting organized—stat! Once you've created your to-do list, you can just add items to it by saying, "Alexa, add [item] to my To-Do list." You'll never forget your grandma's birthday present again.
Sometimes Alexa can be so loud. If you want to make sure the booming voice doesn't wake your snoozing baby, just enable "Whisper Mode" to make sure Alexa keeps it quiet. All you have to do is say, "Alexa, enable Whisper mode." Once enabled, if you whisper to Alexa, it will "whisper" back.
You can also enable Whisper mode via the Alexa app. Here's how to activate it:
(1) Open the Alexa app on your phone.
(2) Tap the menu button (on the top left).
(3) Select "Settings."
(4) Select "Alexa Account"
(5) Tap "Alexa Voice Responses."
(5) Slide the slider to the right to enable the "Whispered Responses" mode.
Next time you pour out the last drop of milk or eat the last slice of bread, simply say, "Alexa, add bread and milk to my shopping list" and Alexa will help you out. Then, when you're at the grocery store and your kids are clamoring for your attention (thereby zapping all memory of what you needed to buy), all you have to do is open your Alexa app, find your shopping list and shop away.
Who needs a Magic 8 Ball? Just ask Alexa to "Open Fortune Teller" to find out what your future holds. You can even customize this skill with personalized fortunes to wow your kids into believing.
If your kids just can't wait until their birthday ... or Christmas ... or the end of school ... Give them a little something to help them count down the days. Just enter an event and date here, then ask: "Alexa, how many days until my birthday (or Christmas, or the end of school, etc.)."
We know: At the end of some days, it doesn't matter whether the wine is good or a Two-Buck variety. But on the days when you want to get fancy with your vino, Alexa can help. Go to the Alexa app and add the MySomm skill to its' repertoire. Then, just ask Alexa for wine recommendations based on whatever you're eating. To activate, say "Alexa, ask Wine Gal to recommend a wine for _______."
If you've got the kind of kid who needs a little noise to successfully slip into slumber, Alexa's got a few tricks. Whether it's ocean waves or pittering rain, Alexa's Sleep and Relaxation Sounds skill will work wonders for your snoozer. Just say, "Alexa, Open Sleep Sounds "or "Alexa, play ocean sounds."
If nudging and/or prodding won't wake up your stubborn sleepyheads, program an alarm to wake them up to their favorite song. Just say, "Alexa, wake me up to It's Raining Tacos (or whatever their favorite song is)." You can also use this feature to usher in a particular part of the day: "Alexa set an alarm for the Clean-Up Song at 7 p.m. tomorrow."
Got seven minutes? Ask Alexa to "Start the 7-Minute Workout" and let it guide you through a series of intense cardio and strength-training exercises designed to whip your body into shape in just a few minutes a day.
Get Your Kids Into Shape, Too
Melissa Heckscher
If your kids are stuck inside and you want to get them moving, Alexa's got a few kid-centric workouts that'll get your littles happily hopping around. Our faves? Alexa's Animal Workout and Freeze Dancers, both of which will totally engage the under-eight set. Your kids won't even know it's exercise—and you can just sit back and watch.
Can't remember how much money you're supposed to start with when you play Monopoly? Don't know who goes first in Scrabble? Ask Alexa! Enable the Board Game Answers skill and let Alexa remind you how to play some of your favorite games.
Hungry? Never again go online or use a phone (retro!) to order food delivery. Just start ordering on Amazon Restaurants and from then on you can just say, "Alexa, enable Amazon Restaurants" or "Alexa, order a pizza" and Alexa will scroll through all your past orders and help you get your grub in no time. Read more on Amazon to find out more about how to use this feature.
If you've got an Echo in your room and another Echo device (like an Echo Dot) in your baby's room, all you have to do to listen to your baby's every grunt and snore is "Enable Drop In on my Echo Dot." This will open a connection so you can hear what's going on in the other room. Just make sure to turn the volume all the way down in your baby's device so she can't hear you on the other end. Check out this article to find out more about how to use this feature.
Make Calls
Amazon
Want to make a quick call? You can use Alexa to call anyone else who has an Echo device. Think of it as a high-tech walkie-talkie. Just go to the Alexa app and enable the "Drop In" feature (make sure the person you want to call has this feature enabled, too). Then, when you want to make the call, just say, "Alexa, drop in on ______" or "Alexa, call ______." This feature is even cooler if you and the person on the other end of the line both have Alexa Show, which lets you also see the person on the other end of your drop-in. Check out this article for more details on how to use this feature.
If you're as exhausted as we are, you probably find it hard to remember all the stuff you're supposed to remember every day. Let Alexa do the remembering for you! Just say: "Alexa, remember that I put my keys in the kitchen drawer." Or, "Remember I hid the kids iPads on the top shelf of the cabinet." Or, "Alexa, remember that there's a PTA meeting on Jun. 1." When you need to remember, just ask: "Alexa, where are my keys?" Or, "Where did I hide the kids' iPads?" Or, "Alexa, when is the PTA meeting?" Nobody will call you scatterbrained again!
Use It as an Intercom
Amazon
Want to get your kids off the TV and downstairs for dinner? You can use Alexa as an intercom to communicate with other Echo devices throughout your home. Just go to the Alexa app on your phone to rename each of your Echo devices, and enable the "Drop In" feature. Tell Alexa to drop in on your other devices, i.e. "Drop in on the Upstairs Echo." And talk away. Your kids will feel like you're right there with them. Check out this article for detailed instructions on how to use Alexa's Drop In.
Hint: Since the Alexa app works anywhere, you can "drop in" on your home devices even when you're away. So next time you're out, and your kids are home, try popping in to say hi. They'll love hearing your voice in the room.
If you've got a little LEGO fanatic, Alexa makes playing with DUPLO blocks even more engaging. Just go to the Alexa app and enable LEGO Duplo Stories. Then say, "Alexa, open LEGO DUPLO stories" and Alexa will launch a story game designed for kids ages 2-5. The game invites kids to use their DUPLO blocks to help tell an interactive story where they choose all the pieces (literally). Toddlerscan choose between five vehicle or five animal stories, and define the route of the story, while guided by Alexa.
Play All Kinds of Games
Amazon
Alexa can play all sorts of games, but we think these are the best ones for kiddos:
* Bingo - You'll need to go online to print out free BINGO cards, but then all you'll need is a pen to mark off your BINGO cards when Alexa calls out each square, one by one.
* Simon - You'll need the external Alexa Buttons gadget to play this, but once it's all set up, kids (and grown-ups) will love playing the classic color-changing memory game in a new, high-tech way.
* Rock, Paper Scissors - It may not keep your youngsters entertained for long, but if you need a 10-minute time-sucker, this works.
* Speak & Spell - If you're old enough to remember the awesome orange spelling game that E.T. used to call home, you'll love handing the Alexa over to the kids to play Speak Spell, a modernized take on the original game.
* Deal or No Deal - Test your luck opening imaginary cases of cash to try and win the big money.
* Guess The Number - A simple number-guessing game, where you have to guess a number between 1-100 and Alexa gives you clues (higher/lower) to help you get to the winning digit.
* 20 Questions - You'll be surprised how often Alexa gets this one right.
* Would You Rather - Kids will love this (clean) version of the classic game of silly choices (i.e. "Which would you rather? Have no hair or hair made of yarn?").
Psst: To get Alexa to launch any of these games, just say, "Alexa, play ______" or "Alexa, launch ______."
Say All Kinds of Things
Blueprints.amazon screenshot
You can now customize Alexa's responses to your specific questions by writing set Q&As. This Alexa skill is a fun way to wow (and entertain) your friends and family. So next time your kids are being testy, go for it. Say, "Alexa, what's wrong with my kids today?" and try to hold your smile in when Alexa says, "They had way too much candy at Grayson's birthday party today" (or whatever the case may be). Go to Amazon Blueprints and try it for yourself.

Lake Balboa at Anthony C. Beilenson Park
This popular South Valley park is open sunrise to sunset and is a popular attraction for both families and nature lovers. The centerpiece of the park is Lake Balboa, a 27-acre lake that, in addition to the beautiful scenery, acts as a preserve to the hundreds of ducks and wildlife that call it home. In addition to walking the 1.3 mile path surrounding the lake, you can also enjoy a leisurely afternoon of fishing or boating from any of the designated areas or launch ramps. With BBQ pits, picnic benches, playgrounds and bike rentals it’s easy to spend the whole day here. Just keep in mind that because Lake Balboa is a wildlife preserve, they ask that you do not feed these ducks in order to protect their migration habits. So leave the bread at home or use it to feed your own ducklings instead.
Heavenly Pond at Franklin Canyon
Tucked away in the hills off Mulholland and Coldwater, Franklin Canyon Park is 605 acres of wilderness heaven. Located between Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley, Franklin Canyon is not only a piece of Hollywood history, but also home to the many ducks that reside at Heavenly Pond year-round. When looking for on-site parking, take your time driving through and stop fully at STOP signs, as patrons have been known to get tickets from the eye-in-the-sky cameras. Past the main parking lot there’s another lot closer to Franklin Canyon Lake. To the west of the lake, a stroller friendly walk will bring you to the small pond alive with ducks, turtles and koi fish eager to entertain your small flock of curious kiddos. Pack a lunch to enjoy at one of the few benches beside the pond or walk a little further east to the picnic grounds by the Sooky Goldman Nature Center. If you choose to bring the four-legged family members along for the fun, the park asks that they remain on leashes so as not to disturb the wildlife. Here are more of our tips for exploring Franklin Canyon.

Echo Park Lake
Eastsiders take refuge in glorious Echo Park where they bask in the sun, shade and gorgeous views of down town LA. This park tends to be busier later in the day so if crowds aren’t your thing plan to make it a morning affair. Although the fun is ample, the parking is not, so be prepared to circle the lake to find the perfect spot.
Douglas Park
This popular urban park in Santa Monica has a relaxing, fun vibe and is great for both toddlers and older kids. While the big kids “take to the streets” in the designated bike and scooter area, the toddlers toddle free within the fenced -n playground geared toward kids ages 5 & under. Across the beautiful green grass you’ll find 3 reflecting pools and a mini flowing river that double as a duck and turtle pond with a quaint little bridge ideal for taking pictures or playing “Pooh sticks.” A popular spot for weekend parties, this park has lots of family fun opportunities including a lawn bowling green, two lighted tennis courts and splash pad (open during the summer months). An onsite restroom and clubhouse available for reservations make this an ideal spot for birthday parties, too.

Polliwog Park
Encompassing 18 acres in Manhattan Beach, Polliwog Park is the largest park in the South Bay. The beautiful focal point of Polliwog is the large pond that is bordered on one side by a natural wildlife refuge and is a popular stopping ground for flocks of migratory birds. Dogs are welcomed, but for the sake of the feathered inhabitants, are required to enjoy the park from the designated dog run. In the summer be prepared to rock out with the ducks and geese of Polliwog Park as the park hosts evening concerts in the amphitheater overlooking the pond. While you may appreciate the exercise course for strength training, your little ones will love the 3 different play areas and running through the refreshing misters. Pack a cooler and take advantage of one of the 6 BBQs offered in the picnic area. After lunch take your flock on a tour of the grounds. In addition to the beautiful Rose Garden and the City’s Historical Museum, the southwest corner of the park is where you’ll find the Manhattan Beach Botanical Gardens, which is open to the public on a regular basis. Restrooms are readily available and ample shade is sure to make everyone happy. There are no parking lots on park grounds so your best bet is to find curbside parking along Redondo Avenue and Manhattan Beach Boulevard.
Currently Closed: Cal State University Northridge (CSUN) Pond
Although this pond may technically be on a college campus, the peaceful site is open to the public. Nestled within a protected historical site of Orange Groves, ducks, turtles and Koi fish happily coexist in this sweet little pond. Turtle and Duck food is available for a quarter from a feeder but bringing your own bread or Cheerios is OK, too. Though sunny over the pond, there is ample shade beneath the fragrant orange trees or inside the lovely gazebo adjacent to the pond. If the smell of oranges is just too tempting, go ahead and help yourself, the campus permits orange picking. When school is in session, parking on the campus is tough but there is ample street parking off of Nordhoff or the neighboring residential streets.
Currently Closed: Los Encinos State Historic Park
Open Wednesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., this state park is a hidden valley gem. Luscious green grass, fragrant citrus trees, ample seating and BBQ pits make this park very inviting for long, lazy afternoons. Tucked away in a residential neighborhood at the corner of Balboa and Ventura Blvd in Encino, it’s more than just a duck pond. A historical site with rich California history, Los Encinos State Historic Park is also home to beautiful Rancho El Encino. This California rancho includes a blacksmith shop as well as the original nine-room de la Ossa Adobe, which are available for free guided tours by appointment. There’s also the two-story limestone Garnier building, which is open for self-guided tours during regular park hours. When you’re done learning about the past, come enjoy the present. Bring your quarters and grab a handful of duck food from the feeders surrounding the fenced in pond and let the little ones have fun feeding the many families of ducks that call this beautiful pond home.
Reseda Park
Located at the corner of Reseda and Victory Blvd, this park is a nice retreat in a busy part of town. A popular weekend spot, there is something to keep everyone in your family entertained sunrise to sunset. The little ones will have tons of fun in the fenced-in playground while the bigger kids enjoy the outdoor basketball, tennis or volleyball courts. When the summer heat gets too hot to handle, take a dip in the public pool or enjoy the picnic and grilling areas year round. A quick walk behind the 2 baseball diamonds will bring you right to the quaint duck pond overlooking the LA River. There aren’t any feeders at this pond so packing your own duck-friendly food is a must if lunching with the flock is on your agenda.
