What’s the History Behind Pumpkin Carvings and Jack-O’-Lanterns?

The tradition of carving pumpkins has origins in the Irish myth of Stingy Jack. People began carving faces in turnips to keep Jack’s (and other evil spirits) soul away, and when immigrants came to the United States, they started using pumpkins. Halloween is rooted in the Gaelic celebration of Samhain, which starts on Oct. 31 and ends on Nov. 1 and celebrates bringing in the harvests and ushering in the dark winter months. People would go from house to house in search of food and drink. They would also often carve makeshift lanterns out of potatoes and other root veggies, and as the years passed, several of these traditions blended to become what we now celebrate as Halloween.

How to Use a Pumpkin Carving Template

So, you’re ready to pick your pumpkin carving stencil and get to work. But, do you know the tips and tricks for carving a pumpkin? We love this tutorial from HGTV that offers advice on how to get the best-looking pumpkin on the block. We also recommend using tracing paper with a dry-erase marker or pencil on your pumpkin and having the best tools at the ready. A serrated knife is a must, as is a big spoon for scooping out the seeds and a paring knife is good for carving. You can also invest in a pumpkin carving kit, which will include everything you need to get started.

The days following Halloween mark a celebration of skeletal proportions: Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead

Celebrated throughout the Americas, Dia de los Muertos originated in Mexico, and kids will recognize the iconic sugar skull as a symbol. Your town or neighborhood may host a celebration, but not everyone knows the meaning behind it. Teach your kids about this uplifting celebration of life with these Day of the Dead facts.

Days & Day of the Dead Facts

day of the dead facts
Amber Guetebier

The Day of the Dead holiday is actually two days, held consecutively: Nov. 1 is marked as a day to honor lost children, as well as any lost or forgotten souls. Nov. 2, Day of the Dead official, honors all lost ancestors and loved ones. The week preceding (and sometimes longer) is spent in preparation for the big night which often culminates in a procession to the town cemetery or a central place where altars have been erected. Families gather together and spend hours making floral arrangements, baking food and sweets for the dead, and decorating. Altars are built at home, on graves, and in many community parks and schoolyards. It's no accident that this all takes place during the time of year when nights grow longer. It is believed that during these two days, the veil between the world of the living and dead is thinner and so it's easier for the dead to arrive. Not unlike the original story behind Halloween.

Day of the Dead Facts: A Dead Man’s Party

day of the dead facts

The idea is not as somber as it may at first sound: in fact, many believe the dead would be insulted by sadness! The tradition of celebrating the life of those who have died is invoked with colorful costumes and masks, parades, parties, and more. At the center of it all is the ofrenda, or offering to the dead. The altars can be simple or elaborate (usually more elaborate) but almost always contain flowers, favorite foods of the dead, including the traditional pan de muerto, photographs, and small relics or objects of the dead (a favorite necklace or pen, for example), sugar skulls and candles.

Here's an interesting Day of the Dead fact: Sugar skulls, in spite of how delicious they look, are generally not consumed (more than one toddler has tried them). Made from a mixture of meringue/powdered egg whites, white sugar, and a little bit of water, they are formed into the shapes of skulls by hand. You can also buy awesome molds (and all the supplies you need, plus great tutorials) here.

How to Make an Ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos

day of the dead facts

You can make your own family altar with the kids. Gather up a picture or pictures of someone you have lost, and place them on a table or shelf. Have the kids help you arrange some flowers, or head out into the yard or a park to find a few things for the offering: acorns, beautiful leaves, and a pretty stone. Make some cookies and leave one for your loved one. Light a candle. It's an easy and beautiful way to remember someone and teach your kids the story behind Day of the Dead.

All photos by the author were taken during Day of the Dead in Michoacán, Mexico.

Dia de los Muertos is a day to remember departed friends and family. Use these Day of the Dead recipes to celebrate!

You’re going to want to send this to your special someone, because they so deserve a boo basket

Whether you’ve heard of them or not yet, boo baskets are the newest Halloween-y project that’s gone viral. How do we know? TikTok, obviously. TikTok creator @emmasemingson‘s video seems to be at the heart of the trend (though we can’t say for sure whether or not she’s the Boo Basket Originator, she definitely knows her stuff).

See? Apparently, friends, you are entitled to a basket chock full of fall and Halloween goodies and we didn’t even know it. A boo basket is basically a basket (surprise!) with all sorts of little gifts and treats to celebrate the season. Wives and girlfriends appear to make up the bulk of recipients, though, of course, you can make a boo basket for anyone in your life. In fact, there are some people who use the ‘pass it along’ method of ‘booing’ someone. They leave a basket for a friend or neighbor, and that’s their cue to make one for someone else. But, you can give them however you want!

And, sure, it may feel like they’re just another thing to worry about during an already busy season, but trust us. These are seriously adorable, and, as TikTok creator Hunter from the account @maya.and.hunter points out, if your wife sends you a video of something, go ahead and do that something.

The zippered mini bag has its own reusable bag inside

When it comes to Trader Joe’s, the grocer can pretty much do no wrong. Whether it’s a spooky cookie house for Halloween or the best frozen food around, there’s always a new product to be found at the grocery.

Last year’s viral favorite, the Micro Tote, is back and you’re going to want to run to snag a few before they sell out (because we know they will). The tiny bag looks just like a full-sized version but fits in the palm of your hand. As if the miniature tote wasn’t cute enough, it actually comes with a reusable shopping bag inside so you never walk into the store again without one.

If you’d rather not store the bag inside, there are plenty of other ways to put the tote to good use. You could store loose change, chapstick, or a mask, or use it as a gift card holder for teachers this holiday! And—we think your Barbie would look oh-so-cute carrying this around town.

But perhaps one of the best ways to make this bag work for you is during the holidays because it makes the perfect Elf on the Shelf accessory! Fill it with tiny treats or come up with another creative way your Elf can get into mischief. The bags are just $2.99 each and are found near the greeting cards and registers.

Make a slinky skeleton with the kids this Halloween season

Add a little spooky fun into the afternoon by making a simple (and not too scary) skeleton craft for kids. Keep it classic, or add color and sparkle for Día de los Muertos. Kids of all ages will enjoy creating this friendly bag o’ bones, especially because it adds fun Halloween decor to any home! For more inspiration, check out our favorite Halloween crafts, Halloween treats, and family costume ideas!

Supplies for Your Skeleton Craft

supplies for a skeleton craft

This craft activity is fun, and you probably have almost everything you need at home. Gather the following items: Cardstock quality paper, brass fasteners, pipe cleaners, hole punch, glitter glue, googly eyes, gemstones, markers, ink pens or just about anything else to get a skeleton ready for the holidays.

Skeleton Craft Printable

printable for skeleton craft

There are a lot of great (and free) downloadable skeleton templates floating around, so take the time to look for one the kids love. Our pick for an easy download is this happy little guy. His smile and big bones make for easy coloring and decorating; he most definitely won over the artist at our writer's home.

Lay Out the Bones to Decorate

After you've cut out the pieces, lay them out for easy decorating. This is also a great opportunity to squeeze in a little science lesson about bones and the body.

Ears and Eyes and Mouth and Nose

How to decorate a skeleton craft

We decided to start with eyes so the skeleton could see "what was going on," but feel free to start decorating anywhere. At this point, kids can go wild with markers, jewels or whatever else they have on hand.

Glitter glue works great for kids who want to create a sugar skull for Día de los Muertos. Add black swirls and lots of color to make it pop.

Punching Time

After everything has dried, grab a hole punch; if there isn't one in the craft box a skewer works well, and make the holes at the designated points on the template.

Get It Together

Using the fasteners (also called brads), attach all the slinky pieces to one another. If the fasteners are too long, fold them up on the backside of the skeleton to conceal them.

Silly Dancing Bones

easy skeleton craft

Finally, this slinky skeleton is ready for action. Create a wall hook with a fun colored pipe cleaner; attach it with glue or punch a hole at the top of the skull and loop through. This craft will be a perfect decoration to pull out year after year, and you can even have the kids create a new one each year!
